It was made official policy in World War II by President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9604, also known as the "License to Steal," which permitted agents of the U.S. government to execute the greatest robbery in world history: the theft of German intellectual (scientific) property. What technology the Americans and Soviets stole has, in fact, fueled some of the greatest scientific advances of the modern era.

 

the Allies, chiefly the Americans and the Soviets, simply confiscated all patents, designs, inventions etc they could lay their hands upon - military, industrial and commercial - regardless of international law or the Geneva Conference. Once in the United States or Soviet Russia the German inventions were "reinvented" and stamped "Made in the U.S.A." or "XXXX."

 

800,000 original patents had been looted by the Allies.

 

Although Americans today find it hard to believe that the USA was once a laggard nation in science and industrial innovations, it was, America under President Franklin Roosevelt had failed to pull the country out of the doldrums of the depression, and while the economy, after having been put on a wartime basis, was unsurpassed in its volume of production, its products, including wartime hardware, were inferior to those of the German war machine.

 

Even during the war the United States had been the home of only four Nobel Prize winners in chemistry as compared to 37 recipients in Europe, eight U.S. winners in Physics to 39 in Europe, and six in medicine, to 37 in Europe. Most of these prizes were awarded to Germans and Austrians.

 

While military analysts the world over now recognize the superiority of German World War II hardware, few, however, are aware that German scientists had done much of the basic scientific pioneer work in the development of many postwar industrial technologies and products for civilian use. In consumer goods and medical advances, Germans under National Socialism were enjoying color TV and color photography a decade before the American public could buy it's first black-and-white sets. The Nazi government had modernized the road system in Germany in the 1930s with the Autobahn, It was not until the 1950s, under President Eisenhower, that the United States undertook the construction of a modern highway system.

 

In the digital world, for example, German prewar and wartime scientists had been at the cutting edge of important developments, from the quartz clock, semiconductors, silicon technology and transistors to the first computer. They were the first to develop the process for the industrial production of integrated circuits and transistors.

 

The culmination of these advances in solid-state physics and digital instrumentation in Nazi Germany was the wartime development of a pioneer computer, the Z4.

 

In the matter of nuclear power, German scientists in Berlin were making feasibility studies of the possible uses of nuclear energy to propel ships and submarines as early as 1941. Moreover, the possibilities of employing nuclear reactors to power land vehicles were also being explored.

 

To list just a few of the many technological advances of consumer interest, German industry developed synthetic mica, synthetic sapphires, Diesel engines, plastics, magnetic tape, infrared night vision aids, laser guidance and so on. The patents, test models, and prototypes of all of the above were simply taken and exploited by their new proprietors.

 

Germany had 138 types of guided missiles in various stages of development and production as well as every conceivable experimental and operational guidance and triggering systems (radar, radio, wire, continuous radio waves, acoustic, infrared, light beams, and magnetics) for its war effort. The 'rocket' that launched the United States into superpower realm was German. The Soviet Union also copied the German weaponry but largely ignored consumer products.

 

Germans were streaks ahead of others nations, that is, by five, ten or more years advanced in development.

 

The Germans spoke of travel into space, about inter-continental ballistic Rockets, artificial satellites, and other no less fantastical plans, such as the establishment of an "island in space", which would be fitted out with a gigantic mirror to catch the sun rays and beam them back to earth in bundled rays.

 

But especially in the sphere of weapons- and rocket technology, the German Reich was unbelievably advanced in comparison to their allied enemies. Remote control for rockets and torpedoes, Infrared rays, Ultra sound, all methods of Jet-propulsion, Helicopters and rockets were known to them. The Germans had developed airplanes, March flying craft and the so-called flying disks, which reached speeds that were generally thought impossible, top speeds of an unbelievable 8,000 km/ hour were reached.

In 1935, the Institute was organizationally incorporated into the Reich Health Office as a special institute for medical-bacteriological issues. In the course of the 1930s, the heads of department also changed: "All the scientists who joined the Institute after 1935 were longstanding NSDAP members," reports Annette Hinz-Wessels. Eugen Gildemeister became director. The bacteriologist was internationally recognized at the time. An expert from the Rockefeller Foundation describes him in a note as the "first real scientist of his time".

 

From 1939, the Second World War determines the Institute's fields of activity. The focus is on combating malaria, typhus and yellow fever - infectious diseases that threaten military effectiveness. ==The RKI works closely with other civilian and military agencies. As part of this research, human experiments are carried out in sanatoriums and concentration camps, some of which are organized by RKI employees themselves and which claim hundreds of lives. Infection experiments with malaria, experimental typhoid treatments, vaccination experiments with yellow fever, dysentery, periodontal disease and typhus. "Eugen Gildemeister tested typhus

vaccines in the Buchenwald concentration camp, with fatal consequences," says Hinz-Wessels. He was never brought to justice for this.== On May 8, 1945, the official end of the Second World War, Gildemeister died under unexplained circumstances.

I was flying back from Wisconsin on a friend’s plane tonight and got called up to the cockpit. The pilots were very confused at what they were seeing. Something was above them and not showing on radar. I’m sure there is a logical explanation here. Watch the video and tell me what I am missing

He seemed unconcerned by the evidence that humans had a more dramatic reaction to tuberculin versus his laboratory animals, exhibiting fever, pains in their joints, and nausea.[10]: 101  In addition to other test subjects, he tested tuberculin on Hedwig Freiberg (his mistress and later wife), who was 16 years old at the time. She relates in her memoirs that Koch had told her that she could "possibly get quite sick" but that she was "not likely to die"

 

In February 1891, a medical trial was performed on 1769 patients to whom tuberculin was administered, and the results made clear that it was not a true cure. Tuberculin failed to provide any form of protective action as only 1% of people in the trial were cured, 34% of people showed only a slight amount of improvement, 55% of the patients showed little to no change in their health, and 4% died due to the treatment having no effect.

 

After tuberculin was on the market, articles reporting successful treatments appeared in professional publications and the public media, only to be followed by the first reports of deaths. At first, the negative reports were not viewed with alarm, as the doctors were, after all, experimenting on seriously ill patients.

 

After performing autopsies on the corpses, Rudolf Virchow proved that not only did tuberculin not kill the bacteria, it even activated latent bacteria.

 

Koch asked the Prussian Minister of Culture for time off and went to Egypt, which was interpreted as an attempt to escape from the German public. A heated debate took place in the Prussian parliament in May 1891. Koch remained convinced of the value of his cure. In 1897, he presented a modified form of tuberculin, which was also ineffective as a therapeutic agent.

Colorado Officials Catch Stolen Ballots Being Filed

Colorado elections officials say advanced ballot matching technology has allowed them to stop as many as a dozen stolen ballots from being filed early in the presidential election.

 

The ballots were stolen from Mesa County voters and filled out without them knowing, according to Secretary of State Jena Griswold, reported ABC News Saturday.

 

"On Tuesday, October 23, the Department of State learned that at least 12 ballots appear to have been intercepted before reaching voters," she said in a statement. "Those ballots were voted and then returned to the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder via USPS mailboxes."

 

The plan was thwarted when the state's voters signature verification system caught the discrepancies with the signatures on some of the stolen mail ballots after they were returned to the clerk's office.

 

Election officials reached out to the voters to let them fix the issue, but the voters said they had not yet voted.

 

Three stolen ballots, however, passed the verification process and were filed successfully, reported ABC News.

 

As a result of the discovery, the county is reexamining the nearly 30,000 ballots it has already received, reported Colorado Newsline, quoting an estimate from the county clerk's office.

 

"This attempt at fraud was found and investigated quickly because of all the trailblazing processes and tools Colorado has in place, like signature verification, ballot tracking, and the curing process," Griswold said. "Every eligible Colorado voter will be able to make their voice heard this election."

 

She said the voters who had their ballots stolen would receive new ballots.

 

The Mesa County District Attorney's office is investigating the matter.

 

Griswold, who is a Democrat, would not answer a question about whether a suspect or suspects have been identified, or whether the votes were cast in favor of Republicans or Democrats.

 

In Colorado, all active registered voters get a ballot in the mail. This year's ballots went out starting on Oct. 11, with voters being able to return them by mail or drop them off at a polling location or in a drop box.

 

The voter signatures on the ballot envelopes are compared with signatures on official documents, such as driver's licenses.

 

Mesa County Clerk Bobbie Gross, a Republican, accused Griswold of releasing the information prematurely.

 

She acknowledged that her office is "investigating attempted election fraud," but said that prematurely releasing the information "could compromise our ability to hold those responsible accountable."

 

"While we understand the secretary of state's desire to make public statements, this is our community and our investigation," Gross said.

 

Griswold, responding to Gross' remarks, said that with less than two weeks left before Election Day, "we took action to alert voters potentially affected by this scheme."

 

She added that she was "proud" to appear at the press conference with Matt Crane, the Republican executive director of the Colorado County Clerks Association and the Colorado County Clerks Association "to ensure voters have accurate information and quell any disinformation on this situation."

The Rasmussen survey found that Black voters are more likely to expect a violent reaction if Harris wins the election, while Hispanics are more likely to think a Trump victory would provoke a violent reaction.

 

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey was conducted Oct. 17 and 20-21 among 2,956 likely voters. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

"I made my decision first and foremost by looking at their economic policies and measures to ease inflation," Tokyo voter Yoshihiro Uchida, 48, told AFP on Sunday. "I voted for people who are likely to make our lives better."

 

Ishiba has pledged to revitalise depressed rural regions and to address the "quiet emergency" of Japan's falling population through family-friendly measures such as flexible working hours.

 

But he has rowed back his position on issues including allowing married couples to take separate surnames. He also named only two women ministers in his cabinet.

 

The self-confessed security policy "geek" has backed the creation of a regional military alliance along the lines of NATO to counter China, although he has cautioned it would "not happen overnight".

 

Several polls by Japanese media have found that the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito might struggle to get the 233 lower house seats needed for a majority.

 

Ishiba has set this threshold as his objective, and missing it would undermine his position in the LDP and mean finding other coalition partners or leading a minority government.

 

"We want to start afresh as a fair, just and sincere party, and seek your mandate," Ishiba said at a rally on Saturday.

 

Local media speculated that Ishiba could potentially even resign immediately to take responsibility, becoming Japan's shortest-serving prime minister in the post-war period.

"The LDP's politics is all about quickly implementing policies for those who give them loads of cash," 67-year-old Noda told his supporters on Saturday.

 

"But those in vulnerable positions… have been ignored," he added, accusing the government of offering insufficient support for survivors of an earthquake in central Japan.

But "Ishiba may be treated dismissively by the United States because he is new", and if Donald Trump becomes president again, "he will not give Ishiba the time of day," Ikezoe said.

 

Voter turnout as of 2 pm local time (0500 GMT) was 19.14 percent, down from 21.49 percent at the same time in the previous lower house election three years ago, according to the internal affairs ministry.

 

Polling stations will close at 8 pm (1100 GMT).

 

Roughly 20 percent of the country's population who have the right to vote already cast their ballots by Saturday in the early voting system, the ministry said.

What is not discussed in the controlled media was that Roosevelt knew about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which caused America to declare war on Japan and Germany and join Britain in its struggle.

 

The venal media have repeated peddled the myth that the two commanders of Hawaii's military installations, Rear Admiral Husband E Kimmel and General Walter C Short, where responsible for the unprepared state of the Pacific Fleet for battle. They and others knew by at least December 4 that the formidable striking force, Kido Butai, was steaming toward Pearl Harbor intending to destroy the American Pacific Fleet by a "surprise" attack. On the night of December 6, Roosevelt and Admiral Theodore Wilkinson (1888 - 1946), Director of the office of Naval Intelligence, were given the thirteen parts of the vital decoded Japanese message that give all necessary information to warrant a call to arms.

 

When Roosevelt had read the 13 parts, about 9 p.m. December 6, 1941, he remarked: "This means war."

 

No intelligence was given to Admiral Kimmel who peacefully slept oblivious to the looming storm that was about to break on his Fleet. Roosevelt and his cabal of advisors, including Henry Stimson (1867 - 1950), the Secretary of the War, Frank Knox (1874 - 1944), the Secretary of the Navy, and Marshall, had three options.

 

One, announce to the world the approaching Kido Butai obliging the Japanese to turn back.

 

Two, alert Kimmel and Short to the impending danger and order them to take appropriate measures, including offensive measures, which would probably, cause the Japanese to turn back.

 

Three, keep Kimmel and Short in ignorance thereby facilitating the success of the "surprise" attack thereby precipitating America's "reluctant" arrival into World War Two.

 

The traduced Admiral Kimmel was asked in an interview in 1958 for his opinion on Washington's, but especially Roosevelt's, treachery on that memorable day of infamy in 1941, he said:

 

"My belief is that General Short and I were not given the information available in Washington and were not informed of the impending attack because it was feared that action in Hawaii might deter the Japanese from making the attack.

 

Our president had repeatedly assured the American people that the United States would not enter the war unless we were attacked. The Japanese attack on the fleet would put the United States in the war with the full support of the American public."

 

Kimmel, the faithful military man, knew of the great betrayal but still out of misplaced loyalty and blind patriotism could not roundly condemn his treacherous War Leaders.

 

It was he, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and other War Leaders, which condemned more than 3,000 American soldiers and sailors to sudden, announced and violent death.

A Thriller About Electing a Pope Draws Crowds at the Rome Film Festival Near the Vatican

With Pope Francis a few weeks away from his 88th birthday, the plotting for his successor is well underway at the Vatican.

 

How timely, then, that just across town in Rome, “ Conclave ” a thriller filled with back-stabbing, manipulative cardinals, quick to toss morality out of the window as they promote their candidate, is a top draw at the Rome Film Festival.

 

This might be a little too close to home — literally and figuratively — for Pope Francis.

 

Austrian-Swiss Director Edward Berger, who directed “All Quiet on the Western Front” (2022), adapted the film from the 2016 novel “Conclave” by Robert Harris. Berger puts an extraordinary Ralph Fiennes in the role of Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, dean of the College of Cardinals responsible for organizing the conclave.

 

The conclave is the centuries-old tradition in which, on the death of a pope, cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican to participate in rounds of voting until they elect a new pontiff. Conclave comes from the Latin “cum clave,” meaning “with a key,” to indicate the Cardinals are locked in until they have chosen the new leader for the world's 1.3 billion Catholics.

 

The whole process is conducted under the spectacular frescoed ceiling painted by Michelangelo, and his masterpiece “The Last Judgment” depicting the fate of men heading to heaven or hell covers the wall behind the altar. During the entire process, the prelates are cut off from communicating with the outside world and must live in seclusion inside the Vatican.

 

Conclaves have a reputation as a no-holds-barred competition as cardinals make backroom deals to elect their favorites in secret ballots.

 

At the end of each round of voting, the ballots are thrown in a specially constructed stove in the Sistine Chapel, with a chemical added that will color the smoke.

 

The tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square awaiting the result will know whether or not a new pope has been selected by the smoke that appears from the chimney. Black means the cardinals have not yet selected a pope, white means a new pope has been chosen.

 

In “ Conclave ” Stanley Tucci plays Aldo Bellini, a progressive American cardinal fighting it out against the powerful conservative Cardinal Goffredo Tedesco played by Sergio Castellitto and Canadian Cardinal Joseph Tremblay played by John Lithgow. Nigerian Cardinal Joshua Adeyemi, played by Lucian Msamati, could be the first Black pope, but his homophobic views clash with the progressives.

 

While women remain excluded from the conclave and the highest circles of power at the Vatican, they provide assistance carrying out humble roles serving the cardinals during the conclave period. Isabella Rossellini plays a nun who surprises in her role of quiet observer who does not miss a trick.

 

While a thriller, the film often comes close to the real workings and current debates at the Vatican. As the stars of the film strolled down the red carpet, some wondered how the film would be viewed over at the Vatican.

 

“It's intriguing. Are they sitting there at the Vatican watching the news coverage of ‘Conclave’?” actor Fiennes said. “I am sure there are a few people in the Vatican who would be curious to see what the film is saying.”

 

Despite his age and serious health issues, including a bad knee which has forced him to use a wheelchair, Pope Francis does not appear to be slowing down. In August he took his longest and most challenging trip ever, traveling by air to four countries in the Asia-Pacific. This month he has presided over the synod, a three-week meeting of more than 360 bishops and lay people to discuss the future of the church.

 

But Francis is not immortal. Discussions on who could be his successor have already begun, but it remains to be seen if the next real conclave will be as thrilling as the film.

Hitler began his national credit program by devising a plan of public works. Projects earmarked for funding included flood control, repair of public buildings and private residences, and construction of new buildings, roads, bridges, canals, and port facilities. The projected cost of the various programs was fixed at one billion units of the national currency. One billion non-inflationary bills of exchange, called Labor Treasury Certificates, were then issued against this cost. Millions of people were put to work on these projects, and the workers were paid with the Treasury Certificates. This government-issued money wasn't backed by gold, but it was backed by something of real value. It was essentially a receipt for labor and materials delivered to the government. Hitler said, "for every mark that was issued we required the equivalent of a mark's worth of work done or goods produced." The workers then spent the Certificates on other goods and services, creating more jobs for more people.

Within two years, the unemployment problem had been solved and the country was back on its feet. It had a solid, stable currency, no debt, and no inflation, at a time when millions of people in the United States and other Western countries were still out of work and living on welfare. Germany even managed to restore foreign trade, although it was denied foreign credit and was faced with an economic boycott abroad. It did this by using a barter system: equipment and commodities were exchanged directly with other countries, circumventing the international banks. This system of direct exchange occurred without debt and without trade deficits. Germany's economic experiment, like Lincoln's, was short-lived; but it left some lasting monuments to its success, including the famous Autobahn, the world's first extensive superhighway.1

Hjalmar Schacht, who was then head of the German central bank, is quoted in a bit of wit that sums up the German version of the "Greenback" miracle. An American banker had commented, "Dr. Schacht, you should come to America. We've lots of money and that's real banking." Schacht replied, "You should come to Berlin. We don't have money. That's real banking."2

Although Hitler has rightfully gone down in infamy in the history books, he was quite popular with the German people

Bernard Vonnegut (August 29, 1914 – April 25, 1997) was an American atmospheric scientist credited with discovering that silver iodide could be used effectively in cloud seeding to produce snow and rain. He was the older brother of American novelist Kurt Vonnegut.

 

Seeding clouds involves inserting large quantities of a nucleating agent into clouds to facilitate the formation of ice crystals. The intent of this process is to cause the clouds to produce rain or snow. Rain- and snow-making companies still use silver iodide as a nucleating agent in seeding clouds.
