Federal law requires the General Services Administration to offer office space and information technology support to presidential candidates for transition activities by Aug. 27.

 

“GSA can also facilitate introductions to other resources from other federal agencies,” Boyd said. “When the teams would like to initiate the security clearance process for eligible members of their teams to begin to be prepared to access classified information from agencies, GSA can help identify the right points of contact.”

 

The candidates have until Sept. 1 to accept any or all of the assistance. Brian Hughes, a senior advisor for the Trump campaign, said in a statement: "We look forward to receiving this notification and will reply when we have evaluated what is being offered."

 

Harris’ campaign did not immediately responded to a request for comment.

 

A GSA spokesperson said that any memorandum of understanding between a presidential campaign and the agency regarding space and services would be posted online.

 

GSA appointed Aimee Whiteman, a career Senior Executive Service member, to serve as federal transition coordinator. Whiteman previously served as director of GSA’s presidential transition support team during the 2016 cycle.

 

Agencies also have named their own transition directors to plan for the handover, regardless of who wins.

Advisers to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reached out to the Health and Human Services Department multiple times after Donald Trump tapped him to lead the massive agency, hoping to jumpstart coordination before his takeover in late January. They were rebuffed.

 

Kennedy’s inability to communicate with the agency he may soon manage, confirmed by an administration official with knowledge of the episodes granted anonymity to describe internal deliberations, is just one consequence of the president-elect’s continued foot-dragging on signing the standard trio of ethics and transparency agreements with the federal government — something his team pledged to do shortly after the election.

 

The Trump transition’s unprecedented delay in signing the agreements has so far prevented the incoming administration from having any formal contact with federal agencies, including sending in groups of policy advisers known as “landing teams.” It also means they can’t access cybersecurity support or secure email servers for transition-related work, or request FBI background checks for their nominees.

 

Both the Trump transition and the White House confirmed to POLITICO that negotiations on the agreements are still underway. But until the standoff is resolved, Trump’s Cabinet nominees will gain no more insight than the general public into the workings of the departments they’re supposed to run.

 

Watchdog groups, ethics experts and former government officials say the delay in coordination with federal agencies, which typically begins by mid-November, means the new administration won’t be up to speed on the state of the career workforce and budget and what headaches may await them when Trump takes the oath of office on Jan. 20. The failure thus far to sign the memorandums has also troubled Biden officials, who are particularly concerned about the potential national security implications.

 

Without the agreements in place, Trump’s team can’t access any non-public government data — depriving it of a full view of efforts the White House and federal agencies are taking to safeguard against a range of threats. An executive order could be signed as early as his first day back in the White House, which would force 15,000 people out of their posts

Donald Trump is planning an executive order that would lead to the removal of all transgender members of the US military, defence sources say.

The order could come on his first day back in the White House, January 20. There are believed to be about 15,000 active service personnel who are transgender. They would be medically discharged, which would determine that they were unfit to serve.

 

It would also lead to a ban on trans people joining the military and would come at a time when almost all branches of the American armed forces are failing to meet recruitment targets.

 

Trump, 78, has railed against “woke” practices in the military, saying that some high-ranking officers are often more interested in diversity, equity and inclusion than planning to fight.

 

The ban is expected to be wider ranging than a similar order made during his first term in office, when Trump prevented transgender people joining the armed forces, but allowed those already serving to keep their jobs. President Biden rescinded the order, but this time even those with decades of service will be removed from their posts, according to several sources.

 

“These people will be forced out at a time when the military can’t recruit enough people,” a source familiar with Trump’s plans said. “Only the Marine Corps is hitting its numbers for recruitment and some people who will be affected are in very senior positions.” (They are one of the reasons why they can't recruit.)

 

According to the Pentagon, privacy policies make it difficult to measure the number of active duty trans people, but about 2,200 service members had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 2021, when Trump’s first ban was lifted. There are about 1.3 million active duty personnel in the military.

There are believed to be thousands of other personnel who identify as gender different from the one they were born.

 

Military charities that fought the trans ban during Trump’s first term are aware of his plans for a similar move by the incoming administration.

 

“Should a trans ban be implemented from day one of the Trump administration it would undermine the readiness of the military and create an even greater recruitment and retention crisis, not to mention signalling vulnerability to America’s adversaries,” said Rachel Branaman, executive director of Modern Military Association of America, which campaigns on behalf of LGBTQ+ military personnel and veterans.

 

“Abruptly discharging 15,000-plus service members, especially given that the military’s recruiting targets fell short by 41,000 recruits last year, adds administrative burdens to war fighting units, harms unit cohesion, and aggravates critical skill gaps,” she said. “There would be a significant financial cost, as well as a loss of experience and leadership that will take possibly 20 years and billions of dollars to replace.”

 

Trump has nominated Pete Hegseth, 44, as his defence secretary. The Fox News host and former major in the US National Guard has publicly railed against “weak” and “effeminate” leadership in the military and argued in a recent book that “the next commander in chief will need to clean house”.

 

He has also said that medical care for transgender personnel is an extravagance the Pentagon cannot afford, adding that focusing on the issues that affect only a small number of people in the military is an example of “trans lunacy”.

 

Trans people already serving in the military say that as well as causing them significant personal hardship, a new ban would be disastrous for the armed forces.

“There are very few members of my career field with this experience, and in the event of a large-scale contingency, it would be difficult to replace the level of experience that I bring to the table,” said a serving US Air Force non-commissioned officer, who preferred not to give their name.

 

Paulo Batista, a transgender analyst in the US navy, said that a ban would not only put a premature end to his career, it would also cause upheaval across the forces.

 

“I have four years left on my contract,” he said. “But you take 15,000 of us out — there’s more but that’s the number that is always mentioned — that’s 15,000 leadership positions, every one of us play a vital role.

 

“There are junior enlisted personnel to high-end officers. You pull one of us out, that means others have to cover. These jobs could take months or even years to fill.”

 

Batista dismissed another argument made by those opposed to trans people serving in the military: that the Pentagon had to cover spiralling costs of gender dysphoria treatment.

 

“There is no money being spent, it’s just continued care,” he said. “People enlisting are just slightly hormone deficient, but the bigger picture is how many other people are going to be affected. Kicking out the 15,000 would affect the whole fleet, the whole battalion. It’s everyone.”

 

Trump’s spokesmen were contacted, but declined to comment.

The Horsehead Nebula

 

One of the most identifiable nebulas in the sky, the Horsehead Nebula in Orion, is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. Also known as Barnard 33, the unusual shape was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The darkness of the Horsehead is caused mostly by thick dust, although the lower part of the Horsehead's neck casts a shadow to the left. Streams of gas leaving the nebula are funneled by a strong magnetic field. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula's base are young stars just in the process of forming. Light takes about 1,500 years to reach us from the Horsehead Nebula. The featured image was taken from the Chilescope Observatory in the mountains of Chile.

The United States and Mexico will strengthen partnerships in astronomy and astrophysics research, and look for opportunities to cooperate on economic, educational, and science, technology, engineering, and math initiatives, NASA announced.

 

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy and Nicola Fox, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, were in Mexico City Sunday, the start of a multi-day trip designed to further previous collaborative efforts and "advance scientific and technological collaboration between the United States and Mexico," NASA said in a statement.

 

Melroy is scheduled to meet with Mexican government officials, including the secretariat-designate for Science, Technology, Humanities, and Innovation. She and Fox plan to meet with academic, industry, and scientific institutional leaders.

 

"These discussions will emphasize expanding cooperation in space science, with particular focus on Mexico's growing astronomy programs," NASA said.

 

The administration said this visit is part of NASA's commitment to advancing international cooperation in space and science globally, part of the efforts of its Office of International and Interagency Relations Mission.

When it first appeared in their radar images, NASA scientist Chad Greene and his team of engineers weren’t sure what they were seeing.

 

Flying above northern Greenland in a Gulfstream III in April of this year, Greene and his crew were monitoring radar information collected from the ice sheet below when, about 150 miles east of Pituffik Space Base—formerly Thule Air Base and still the northernmost installation operated by the U.S. Armed Forces—they spotted something unexpected.

 

The aircraft’s radar system had detected some kind of structure buried beneath the ice.

 

A remote U.S. military base once used as a top-secret testing site for the deployment of nuclear missiles from the Arctic, Camp Century was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers within the Greenland Ice Sheet in 1959. Remaining in use for less than a decade, the base was decommissioned after just eight years and abandoned beneath Greenland’s frozen landscape.

 

Also known as the “city under the ice,” this forgotten Cold War relic consists of a network of tunnels hewn into the near-surface portions of the ice sheet. Today, the remnants of the secretive base lay hidden beneath close to 100 feet of snow and ice that have continued to accumulate since it was decommissioned.

‘Unexpected odor’ inside resupply spacecraft prompts lockdown on ISS

A Russian cosmonaut noticed an “unexpected odor” and “observed small droplets” inside the unpiloted Progress 90 resupply spacecraft after it docked at the International Space Station (ISS).

 

On November 24, 2024, NASA said that the strange smell prompted the ISS crew to “close the Poisk hatch to the rest of the Russian segment” until further investigation could be undertaken.

 

The Progress 90 resupply spacecraft successfully docked to the Poisk module on November 23, 2024, where upon the cosmonaut proceeded to open the hatch.

 

According to NASA, air scrubbers and contaminant sensors subsequently monitored the atmosphere on board the ISS and on November 24, 2024, “flight controllers determined air quality inside the space station was at normal levels”.

 

“There are no concerns for the crew, and as of Sunday afternoon, the crew is working to open the hatch between Poisk and Progress while all other space station operations are proceeding as planned,” said a spokesperson for NASA.

 

NASA initially celebrated the arrival of Progress 90 which launched on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on November 21, 2024.

 

The spacecraft is delivering about three tons of food, fuel, and supplies for the Expedition 72 crew aboard the space station and will remain docked for around six months before departing for a re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

 

There are three Russian cosmonauts currently aboard the ISS – Alexy Ovchinin, Ivan Wagner and Aleksandr Gorbunov.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

At least 17 people are missing after a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea following warnings about rough seas, Egyptian officials said Monday.

 

The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafy, said rescuers saved 28 people from the vessel south of the coastal town of Marsa Alam, and some were airlifted to receive medical treatment.

 

Hanafy said 31 tourists of various nationalities were on board along with 14 crew members.

 

The governorate received a report shortly before dawn Monday of a distress call made from the yacht, which had left Marsa Alam for a five-day journey.

 

It was not immediately clear what caused the four-deck, wooden-hulled motor yacht to sink. But the Egyptian Meteorological Authority on Saturday warned about turbulence and high waves on the Red Sea and advised against maritime activity for Sunday and Monday.

Pentagon Loses Track of $2.5 Trillion

The Pentagon has failed its seventh audit in a row, losing track of $2.5 trillion worth of assets. Where will Elon Musk possibly find $2 trillion of waste and fraud?

 

Last week, the Pentagon once again failed its legally mandated annual audit, suggesting that government workers are, in fact, above the law. Now the Defense Department is promising to get its books sorted by … 2028. Which just so happens to be Donald Trump‘s last year in office.

 

In fact, the Pentagon has never passed an audit dating back to 1990 when they were mandated by the Chief Financial Officers Act. The law gave the Pentagon until 2017—27 years—to comply, since military industrial lobbyists have a lot of friends in Congress.

 

Nonetheless here we are 34 years later, seven years after it became legally binding, and the Pentagon can’t account for $2.5 trillion.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. These people have worked themselves into a shoot. The destruction they’ve left in their wake and the fact they blame their kids for it is disgusting. Part of their programming was abusing their kids, kicking the ladder down and bucking all responsibility for everything. Literally programmed.

“In the days and weeks following January 6, 2021, the FBI opened an investigation into the pipe bomber and attempted to identify the suspect by analyzing cell phone data linked to the area surrounding the RNC and DNC,” Loudermilk told Just the News. [CAP]

 

“In June 2023, the former Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office,Steve D’Antuono, who oversaw the pipe bomb investigation, said that the FBI received corrupted data from one of the cell carriers and that it most likely contained the identity of the pipe bomber. Last year, D’Antuono told the House Judiciary Committee that the FBI did not a receive complete phone data from telephone carriers because some of it had been corrupted.

 

“We did a complete geofence. We have complete data. Not complete, because there's some data that was corrupted by one of the providers, not purposely by them, right. It just – unusual circumstance that we have corrupt data from one of the providers,” D’Antuono testified in a transcribed interview.

 

“But for that day, which is awful because we don't have that information to search. So could it have been that provider? Yeah, with our luck, you know, with this investigation it probably was, right,” he said.

 

D’Antuono served as the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office until he stepped down in late 2022. A lawyer for the retired agent did not immediately return an email Wednesday seeking comment.

 

The concerns about the unsolved Jan. 6 pipe bombs have been heightened by evidence Loudermilk disclosed in the last year showing that then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was taken within 10 yards of one of the live bombs on the morning of Jan. 6 because the Secret Service did not do a thorough security sweep.

 

In addition, Loudermilk also provided security camera video footage and still photos of the suspect holding a device that lawmakers believe was a cell phone, further making the phone data a potential case-solving piece of evidence.

 

Loudermilk sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray this fall demanding to know whether D'Antuono's testimony was accurate and whether the bureau ever went back to the cell phone carriers to get a fresh set of uncorrupted data. Just the News obtained a copy of the letter.

 

"The Subcommittee requests that the FBI provide a response to Mr. D’Antuono’s claim that the FBI received corrupted data," loudermilk wrote Wray.

 

The letter specifically demands that the FBI chief answer whether the bureau ever "inform the cell carrier(s) that provided corrupted data that the data they provided was corrupted or otherwise unusable."

The bureau was able to obtain photographic and video evidence of the prime suspect, but have so far been unable to locate the individual, to the consternation of congressional investigators. A $500,000 reward for information about the suspect remains in effect, according to the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

 

The FBI declined to comment on the investigation.

 

House Republicans previously raised several concerns about the FBI’s handling of the investigation born from D’Antuono’s testimony.

 

D’Antuono told Congress his investigators were not able to determine the whether the pipe bombs were placed as a diversionary tactic for the riot at the Capitol and was unable to recall if they had interviewed a key witness—the individual who discovered the pipe bombs. Additionally, D’Antuono gave testimony that the pipe bombs were deemed inoperable, despite the Quantico laboratory coming to a different conclusion.

 

At a hearing earlier this year about assessing the law enforcement response to the pipe bombs, Loudermilk reiterated concerns about the FBI’s investigation.

 

"Despite the suspect’s appearance on numerous USCP CCTV cameras, and the FBI’s efforts interviewing over 800 individuals and assessing more than 300 tips, the suspect remains at large,” Loudermilk said.

 

“Unfortunately, FBI has failed to provide substantive updates on the investigation despite numerous requests from congressional committees. Today, they have declined to participate in our hearing,” he added.

 

The pipe bombs, which were planted at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and Republican National Committee headquarters relatively undetected, are one of the most prominent security failures that took place on January 6.

 

In one episode that represents the extent of the security lapse which left experts disturbed, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was brought within yards of where the pipe bomb had earlier been planted, according to security footage reviewed by Just the News last year and released publicly by the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight.

 

The footage shows that the suspect calmly sitting at a park bench near the DNC's garage entrance the night before, taking out the explosive device and planting it between the bench and a bush about 10 yards from the driveway before walking off. A photo of the device as it was found while Harris was still visiting the DNC shows it clearly visible to the human eye.

 

Despite the bomb's proximity to the garage entrance where Harris arrived,the footage shows the Secret Service motorcade bringing the future vice president into the driveway and into the building the next day, seemingly unaware that an explosive device was in the immediate vicinity.Harris was only evacuated after a passerby notified the Secret Service detail of a suspicious object, which turned out to be one of the pipe bombs.
