Spanish police bust Ukrainian drone drug gang

 

Two “narcodrones” were allegedly used to bring hashish from Morrocco

 

The Straits of Gibraltar are less than 15km wide at their narrowest point, and Spanish authorities have long struggled to thwart smugglers from North Africa. While boats can carry more cargo, they are also easier to intercept – unlike drones.

 

“The ‘narcodrones’ were manufactured in Ukraine and then transported by road to the south of our country,” the Policia Nacional said in a statement on Thursday.

 

The drones were used by criminal groups in Campo de Gibraltar and Costa del Sol. Six searches were carried out in Algeciras and Marbella, while ten people were detained as part of the police operation. Seven of them have already been put in jail, the police said.

 

Dubbed “Operation Cyclone,” the investigation had the backing of Europol, as well as the police of Ukraine and Poland, according to Madrid.

Butterball Employees Implicated In Allegations of Inappropriate Sexual Acts With Turkeys

Avoiding uncomfortable topics at Thanksgiving dinner this week just got a little more difficult. Allegations against Butterball—the most popular commercial producer of turkeys in a country that has an annual, nationwide turkey feast later this week—have come to light, implicating several employees in acts of animal cruelty.One of the cruel acts? Sexual assault of the turkeys, both living and already slaughtered for the grocery store. To quote What We Do in the Shadows, “You’d enjoy it a lot more if you didn’t know it’d been f_cked.”

 

So, here’s what happened in a nutshell. PETA did what PETA does: when they heard whisperings of inappropriate things happening at the Butterball factory, they went sniffing around. Apparently, theyfound quite a bit of shocking and inappropriate behavior, not the least of which was turkeys being hit and stomped on while they were still alive. There was alsoevidence of sexual assault happening between men who worked in the factory and the turkeys while the birds were restrained. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Butterball has faced legal trouble for mistreating animals at their facilities. In 2012, Butterball was hit with legal action after an undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals exposed cruelty against animals.

 

The timing of releasing this information to the public so soon before the national “let’s eat turkey” day—Thanksgiving—was possibly intentional. With so much national attention already on turkeys, it’s no surprise that this story was met with widespread outrage. Holiday-specific controversies have a way of stirring up a media storm, and those storms are frequently linked to activists who have been carefully stoking the flames of controversy behind the scenes to draw attention to their cause.

 

This most recent—and disgusting—controversy raises the issue of media literacy. In a nation where the average reading comprehension level hovers around that of a sixth grader, it’s important to take a moment and remember a few key rules for processing shocking news.Whenever you see a headline that instantly raises your blood pressure, remember that this is exactly what the headline was designed to do.Then, run through the following list of questions.

 

Who benefits from this information being out in the world? Is there a company that stands to profit from the information you’re reading? Is there a rival to the entity being implicated in the story? Take a moment to see if there’s a clear benefit for someone who might profit from your outrage.

 

How reliable is the source? Is the news outlet owned by a major corporation that thrives on keeping you angry? Do they have partnerships with organizations that benefit from your attention being focused on this topic? A quick Google search can help you learn about the outlet and where it falls on the media bias scale.

 

What biases might be at play? After checking the source’s biases, think critically: what’s the benefit of trusting the information you’re reading in this case? If the answer isn’t “you” as the reader, it might be time to find a new source.

 

Verifying your sources is critical, especially when stories repeatedly make you angry. Chances are, you’re not the only one, and it’s a good idea to ensure you aren’t being manipulated to sway public opinion.

 

The controversy surrounding the mistreatment of turkeys—animals being prepared to grace our holiday tables with love in the form of food—is horrible, no doubt about that.But it does raise questions about the need to examine how all our food is produced. If turkeys are treated this way, they’re likely not the only animals suffering up to the point of slaughter. Acknowledging this is hard, especially before holiday gatherings centered around eating. But if we don’t confront the uncomfortable truths, we’ll never make it better. Ignorance might be Aunt Pam’s favorite seasoning, but it leaves a bitter aftertaste.

 

Will these allegations affect your Thanksgiving meal? Well, that’s up to you.Butterball turkeys are still for sale, though there’s no guarantee certain cavities were treated with the dignity they deserve. If you have strong feelings about giving your money to a company that fostered such a terrible environment, maybe it’s time to explore those feelings and consider how your spending can make a difference.After all, you’ll enjoy your food a lot more if you know it wasn’t f_cked.

Denmark Hit By 'Whole Country' Mobile Outage, Trains Halted

 

While Americans celebrate Thanksgiving by chowing down on turkey and mashed potatoes (and, of course, gravy), Denmark has experienced a widespread telecommunications outage, disrupting cellphone service and bringing train networks to a grinding halt.

 

The German news website Der Spiegel reports that the TDC Net network suffered a nationwide outage on Thursday due to technical difficulties. The exact cause has yet to be disclosed.

The lack of mobile coverage occurs randomly across the country. "The whole country is affected sporadically," said Lasse Bjerre Sørensen. Accordingly, it could take some time before the network is back up and running.

The outage also affects emergency calls. Because the local emergency call center - 112 - is affected by the mobile network outage and calls may not be able to be put through, the emergency rescue service Hovedstadens Beredskab is sending vehicles onto the streets. As the rescue service announced on X, these vehicles should be contacted when urgent help is needed.

Ceasefire Falters as Israel Launches Airstrikes, Artillery Shelling on Southern Lebanon

 

Israel says ‘suspects’ in vehicles violate ceasefire by trying to return home

 

The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire began Wednesday morning. Less than two days later, it seems to be faltering, with multiple reports of Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon, and claims of violations by both sides.

 

Israel carried out an airstrike against the outskirts of Baysariyeh, which is near Tyre. They confirmed the attack, saying they were targeting a Hezbollah storage facility after seeing “terrorist activity.” They added in their statement that they were “acting to enforce violations of the ceasefire.”

 

Though the claims of violations are coming from both sides, so far it is only Israeli forces whose violations actually involve firing. Lebanese people continue to try to return to their homes in the south, despite Israel’s military forbidding them to do so.

 

There are multiple reports of Israel carrying out artillery shelling against towns and villages across southern Lebanon this afternoon. Strikes were reported against the towns of Halta, Taybeh, Khiam, and Rmeish. In Rmeish the attack damaged a supermarket and a home. Three were injured in Taybeh.

 

There were also reported Israeli tank shellings in several places, including the village of Markaba. In that incident, a car was attacked and multiple civilians were wounded. Israeli ground troops also opened fire on vehicles multiple times across southern Lebanon, incidents which happened both on Wednesday and Thursday.

"We noticed a sharp dropoff in traffic on Facebook around the 2020 election," said Kyle Mann. "They were really concerned about fake news after 2016 and they were going to throw all the levers and switches."

 

"The line of attack from these platforms went, maybe they're trying to do humor, but humor can be a vehicle for hatred," explained Seth Dillon."At the time, Twitter's mission statement was to provide a platform for free expression without barriers but then in the terms of service, you find all the barriers misgendering, not using someone's pronouns, deadnaming, these were the hot button topics at that time."

 

The Babylon Bee was banned from Twitter in 2022 for a post making fun of the idea of a transgender person, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health Admiral Rachel Levine, being named "woman of the year." Later that year, Elon Musk bought Twitter and reinstated their account.

 

"The Rachel Levine tweet was more mischief than a joke," said Joel Berry. "How audacious it was made our writers laugh because you just weren't supposed to do that. I'll never forget Kyle Mann calling me and saying: Bro, I think you're going to get us kicked off Twitter."

 

Their account was banned unless they deleted the tweet.

 

"We had to admit that what we had said was hate speech. There's the penance we had to do, click delete on the tweet and say five hail-Twitters," said Kyle Mann. "Our entire business model is to write funny articles and post them on Facebook and Twitter. All of a sudden, Facebook had crushed us and Twitter has removed us."

 

"A couple of days later, we got a DM from Elon Musk asking if we'd been banned from Twitter. And of course, we couldn't respond to him because we were locked out of our account!" Seth Dillon recalled.

 

Elon Musk said: "Is someone you don't like allowed to say something you don't like? If that is the case, you have free speech."

 

"I thought it was a joke, he was really considering buying Twitter because of this problem. But apparently, he was serious!" Seth Dillon tells Palladium Films. "The very day he took over, he sent me a message at like 4:30 in the morning, and said: Do you want the Babylon Bee restored? There will be no censorship of humor."

 

Seth Dillon says: "The answer can't be we have to wait for some of the richest men to buy the platform and say, no we don't care about advertising dollars or government pressure. IDF strikes Hezbollah rocket depot after identifying violations of fresh ceasefire

 

First strikes since ceeasefire come as troops fire warning shots, including drone strike, near vehicles in violation of two-day old truce; Lebanese media report two injured

 

The Israel Defense Forces said Thursday that it had carried out an airstrike on a Hezbollah facility in southern Lebanon, less than two days into a fragile ceasefire with the Iran-backed terror group and hours after firing warning shots at suspects who approached border areas that are still off-limits according to the truce.

 

Fighter jets struck the facility, which was used to hold medium-range rockets, after identifying activity there, according to the military.

 

“The IDF is deployed in southern Lebanon, acting and thwarting any violation of the ceasefire agreement,” the IDF added.

 

Earlier, the IDF said it fired warning shots in several cases at suspicious individuals in several areas of southern Lebanon. In one case, a drone struck near the suspects as a warning measure.

Shalom Nagar, the Israeli prison guard who by chance, and against his wishes, was selected to hang convicted Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, died Tuesday aged 88.

Nagar, who was 26 when carrying out the sentence, remained unknown for three decades after the execution that was performed at Ramle Prison in the early hours of June 1, 1962. Israeli authorities kept quiet on details of how the death sentence was carried out, with only a brief initial announcement made on Kol Yisrael radio.

Then, in 1992, an Israeli radio station researching material for a report marking 30 years since the execution came across Nagar’s name. In the years that followed, he gave various media interviews — including to a German outlet — describing the six months he spent watching over Eichmann during his trial, and how he came to be the one who carried out the execution, the first and only death sentence ever enacted by the State of Israel.

Nagar was born in Yemen in 1936 and arrived in Israel aged 12, an orphan. He served in the IDF’s Paratroopers Brigade and later joined the Israel Prison Service, where his path would cross that of Eichman.

Ocasio-Cortez’s account description on X states that the congresswoman is “people-funded” and “takes no lobbyist [cash],” using a money bag emoji in place of the word “cash.”Despite her claim to the contrary, the representative has taken thousands of dollars in contributions from lobbyists since assuming office, according to federal records.

 

The congresswoman has an extensive record decrying the influence of money on politics. In 2018, shortly after winning office for the first time, Ocasio-Cortez criticizedher party’s “refusal to reject [corporate] lobbyist money.” Since then, she has called to ban members of Congress from working as lobbyists after leaving office, rebukedfellow Democrats for their close ties to lobbyists, and accused lobbyists of working to kill legislation that would benefit the public.

 

While Ocasio-Cortez has harsh words for lobbyists, she has accepted donations from them every year since she first took office in 2018.

 

Dave Koshgarian, a lobbyist with Ernst & Young, has been Ocasio-Cortez’s most consistent donor, sending her thousands of dollars beginning in 2020. Koshgarian has represented a number of corporate clients, including Duke Energy, MetLife, General Electric, Charles Schwab, and BlackRock, according to lobbying disclosures. Other clients represented by Ocasio-Cortez’s lobbyist donors include, among others, Nike, Delta Air Lines, healthcare trade associations, and the New Venture Fund, one arm of a massive Democratic-aligned dark money network managed by the Arabella Advisors consulting firm.

 

Ocasio-Cortez has also been critical of the presence of dark money, funds that filter into the ideological causes without a clear original donor, in politics. She has argued that dark money groups sway the Supreme Court and unethically influence policy development.

 

Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that she doesn’t take donations from lobbyists isn’t new, as the representative insists on social media that she swore off lobbyist cash from the very beginning. Cortez has, however, dialed down her public criticism of the lobbying industry in recent years, not making a single post on X with the words “lobby,” “lobbyist,” or “lobbying” since September 2022.

 

The Washington Examiner reported in April 2023 that one of TikTok’s top lobbyists sat on the board of directors of a nonprofit group advised by Ocasio-Cortez.The congresswoman vigorously fought against proposed bans on the Chinese social media platform at the time, arguing that the United States shouldn’t ban TikTok but should instead impose blanket protections against data harvesting.

 

“This is how corporate lobbying works,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in May 2019. “Lobbyists ID bills they need to kill to keep profits high (no matter the human cost), come up w/ ‘sensible’ talking points to mask intent + say policy is ‘misguided,’ then schmooze policymakers in secret into accepting said talking points.”

 

Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

Clashes Approach Syria’s Aleppo City As Rebels Make More Gains (Videos)

 

 

Militants led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) advanced closer to the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on November 28 as a part of their large-scale offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), codenamed Operation Deterrence of Aggression.

 

Following heavy clashes with the SAA in the western Aleppo countryside, the militants managed to capture the towns of Khan al-Assal, Kafrnaha, Yaqed Al-Adas, and the 1st Engineers’ Village. Khan al-Assal is located around six kilometers away from the western entrance of Aleppo city.

 

The militants also advanced to the southwest of the city, capturing the town of al-Zarba which is located on the strategic M5 highway, the main route to Aleppo. The Sham FM pro-government radio station reported that the highway was closed by the SAA.

 

In the morning, HTS and its allies, including the Turkistan Islamic Party, Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad and cluster of Turkey-backed armed factions, launched a separate assault in southern Idlib countryside and reportedly managed to capture the towns of Dadikh, Kafr Batikh, and Sheikh Ali, which are located along the M5.

 

Heavy clashes were also reported in the nearby town of Saraqib. However, the key town remains in the hands of the SAA and other pro-government factions.

 

Warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Arab Air Force continued to target militants between the western Aleppo countryside and the southern Ilib countryside.

 

Meanwhile, reinforcements from the 25th Special Mission Forces Division, 4th Armored Division, the Republican Guards, the Special Mission Forces and other formations of the SAA have reportedly begun to arrive to the fronts in both Aleppo and Idlib.

Late in the day before Thanksgiving, a Manhattan federal judge issued a ruling on whether rap mogul Sean Combs would succeed in his third attempt at being released on bail pending trial on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

 

“DENIED,” Judge Arun Subramanian’s ruling said.

 

The single word in capital letters announced that Combs would not be spending Thanksgiving with his family in the three-bedroom Manhattan apartment outfitted with camera and 24-hour armed minders that his lawyers had arranged as part of a $50 million bail package.

 

Instead, he would remain in the horrid Metropolitan Correctional Center, which serves a midday Thanksgiving turkey dinner.

 

The judge’s full order makes clear that Combs never really had a chance of making bail.

 

“No Condition or Combination of Conditions Will Reasonably Assure the Safety of the Community,” the judge declared.

 

At a bail hearing on Friday, the judge asked the two sides to submit their legal arguments by Monday and said he would issue a decision later this week. He said nothing about this coming Thursday being Thanksgiving, but that must have risen in the minds of the family members in the courtroom at Friday’s hearing. They included Combs’ twin 17-year-old daughters, Jessie and D’Lila.

 

The twins had been with their father back on Thanksgiving of 2022, when he engaged in a little prescient public relations by going with a current girlfriend to serve turkey dinner to homeless men at The Caring Place in Miami, Florida. His daughters were not likely aware that Thanksgiving of 2022 happened also to be the day that the Adult Survivors Act opened a year-long allowing alleged sex crime victims to seek civil redress for sex crimes otherwise outside the statute of limitations.

 

The approach of that deadline saw R&B singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura file suit against her former boyfriend Combs.

 

Ventura charged that the rap mogul had raped her and subjected her to a yearslong ordeal of sexual and psychic abuse.

 

Combs settled the suit the day after it was filed. But two other women, Joi Dickerson-Neal and Liza Gardner, filed separate suits against him on Thanksgiving itself. They each alleged that he had raped them at the start of his career; Gardner in 1990 and Dickerson-Neal early on the following year.

 

Dickerson-Neal’s suit says she had done something subsequent to the alleged Jan. 3, 1991, attack that could have spared numerous others from being similarly assaulted by him. His career might have ended before it really began. But the immediate outcome was one that had become too common in the days before before #MeToo.

 

“Plaintiff filed police reports in New York and New Jersey and spoke to several prosecutors hoping to press charges,” Dickerson-Neal’s suit reports. “Members of law enforcement told Plaintiff that her allegations would need to be corroborated by witnesses and others who had experienced similar assaults.”

 

Combs would deny—and continues to deny—that he has ever sexually assaulted anybody. And, having become a billionaire, he could have contested or just quietly settled those cases as well. That might have been, had his behavior with Ventura and others not come to the attention of federal prosecutors in New York this year.

That behavior included “freak-offs” involving paid escorts and drugs. Prosecutors also took note of a surveillance video obtained by CNN that shows Combs kicking and dragging Ventura in a hallway at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles in in 2016.

 

Combs was indicted in September and remanded to the horrid Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn. His attorneys twice attempted to get him released pending trial with a multimillion-dollar bail package. He did not help himself by repeatedly violating the MDC’s rules regarding telephones and text messaging.

 

But Combs’ attorneys decided to give it another try with a bail package only a billionaire could put together. The government contended that approving something so far beyond the means of the less than fabulously wealthy would constitute a “two-tier” system of justice. The government also took the position that Combs had proven too untrustworthy and dangerous for pretrial release, whatever the assurances.

 

The judge agreed and cited several passages from the indictment, which charges that for decades Combs “abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct. To do so, [Combs] relied on the employees, resources, and influence of the multi-faceted business empire that he led and controlled—creating a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in, and attempted to engage in, among other crimes, sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.”

 

The judge further quotes the indictment alleging that Combs “himself carried or brandished firearms to intimidate and threaten others, including victims of and witnesses to his abuse.”

 

The judge’s order notes that the indictment also says “law enforcement seized firearms and ammunition, including three AR-15s with defaced serial numbers, as well as a drum magazine“ and that Combs “engaged in acts of violence, threats of violence, threats of financial and reputational harm, and verbal abuse. These acts of violence included kidnapping and arson.”

 

In citing the reasons why he was denying Combs bail, the judge’s order also served as a reminder of the seriousness of the allegations against him. The order quotes a text Venture sent Combs after a 2016 incident in in a hotel hallway where he was he was videoed battering kicking and dragging her:

 

“I have a black eye and a fat lip. You are sick for thinking it’s OK to do what you’ve done…I still have crazy bruising.”

 

That is somehow the same guy who smiled so brightly at his twin daughters when he came into the courtroom for Friday’s bail hearing on Friday.Combs will almost certainly remain locked up until trial. And, if he is convicted, he may not be free for many Thanksgivings to come.

Massive drug bust leads to discovery of new Pacific trafficking route with sophisticated "narco subs"

Authorities from dozens of countries seized over 225 metric tons of cocaine in a six-week mega-operation where they unearthed a new Pacific trafficking route from South America to Australia, the Colombian Navy said Wednesday. Legislating Silence: How Congress Plans to Target Critics of Israel

 

Acoalition of civil rights groups is sounding the alarm over three proposed bills that, they argue, represent an audacious attempt to stifle dissent and curb free expression in the United States. The legislation—H.R.6408, H.R.9495, and S.4136—claims to combat terrorism by targeting the tax-exempt status of nonprofits deemed to be in violation. But critics insist the true aim is more insidious: to suppress organizations that are critical of Israel. Championed by lawmakers with deep ties to AIPAC, the bills, if passed, could pave the way for an unprecedented crackdown on dissent under the guise of national security.

 

While federal laws already prohibit supporting proscribed terrorist organizations, these bills would expand the government’s reach over nonprofits under the guise of countering such threats. H.R.6408 and H.R.9495 have already passed the House of Representatives, with S.4136 poised to add further amendments to the legislative effort. Critics have dubbed H.R.9495 the “nonprofit killer bill,” drawing sharp condemnation from groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

 

In a letter signed by over 300 nonprofits, the ACLU called on Congress to reject the legislation, warning of its potential to erode constitutional rights and empower government overreach. CAIR echoed these concerns in a press release, labeling the bills “undemocratic” and accusing them of undermining fundamental freedoms. With growing opposition, the fate of these controversial bills may hinge on the ability of civil rights advocates to mobilize public and legislative resistance.

 

Critics argue that the legislative push embodied by H.R.9495 and H.R.6408 hand unprecedented authority to the U.S. Treasury Secretary, enabling them to unilaterally revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations accused of “supporting terrorism.” The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) warns that this could be done using classified evidence without formal charges or sufficient opportunity for organizations to defend themselves.

 

Despite this criticism, both bills have cleared Congress, with H.R.6408—billed by its supporters as a response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel—receiving less attention but facing similar backlash. The Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee contends the legislation creates “virtually no limitations or accountability” on the Treasury Secretary’s discretion, allowing decisions based on viewpoints that differ from those of the administration in power.

 

Jonathan Schanzer, vice president of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, a Neoconservative Washington-based think tank, has claimed that pro-Palestinian student protesters take “guidance and support” from American nonprofit organizations. Schanzer claims that one such charity, American Muslims in Palestine, carries a “striking resemblance to the Hamas charities that were dismantled here more than a decade ago.” Schanzer was likely referring to the Holy Land Foundation, who were subjected to a highly politicized trial that led to their designation as a terrorist organization in the post-9/11 era.

During his first presidency, Donald Trump signed an executive order threatening to strip sanctuary cities of federal funding. Oakland, which has been a safe haven for undocumented immigrants since 1986, stood to lose about $130 million annually.

 

The threat, like many from Trump, was not ultimately carried out. But during his first term, he repeatedly used similar warnings to make points and push back against states and cities. In 2019, he said he’d cut support for the entirety of California over wildfire management practices.

 

Most departments and public services in Oakland rely on a hodge-podge of local, state, and federal funds to operate. Often the federal money is a smaller bucket, but if the president-elect takes a similar punitive tack in his upcoming term, local services from housing to education stand to suffer. This time, he’s also proposed shrinking or dismantling entire federal departments, like the Department of Education.

 

We checked in with government officials and analysts to learn how much the city depends on federal money, and what they expect to experience over the next four years.

 

Housing programs could shrink under Trump

 

Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department subsidizes affordable housing in the city using an alphabet soup of federal and state grants and local tax revenue and fees.

 

Emily Weinstein, the department’s director, said the city receives four main grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, better known as HUD. These awards total about $14.4 million annually, with the largest being the Community Development Block Grantat $7.5 million. The city and county also receive HUD grants for emergency homeless shelters and programs.

 

“Absence of these programs would impact all of Oakland, including the low-income residents who are direct beneficiaries,” said Weinstein.

 

Other federal housing programs don’t get funded through the city directly, but support people in Oakland, she noted. The Section 8 program, for example, provides housing vouchers for low-income residents across the country. Locally, the Oakland Housing Authority receives and distributes those vouchers to renters who can use them to cover a portion of their rent.

 

The federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit program is a common way of funding affordable housing development. Developers can receive tax credits for investing in low-income housing. About 40% of funding for new affordable construction projects in Oakland is through these tax credits, said Weinstein, and “without it, we can neither adequately address homelessness nor build housing that is affordable to working families.”

 

It’s unlikely that Trump will end the tax credit, which has support on both sides of the aisle, Weinstein said, but she said other developer-friendly tax policies of his in the previous term “undermined” the appeal of the tax credit. With the corporate tax rate already lowered, it’s not as beneficial for investors to fund affordable housing and receive the tax credit.

 

“If the program is undermined, it would likely reduce the amount of affordable housing being built in Oakland,” Weinstein said. The city is already behind on targets for low-income construction.

What happens in Oakland if the Department of Education is eliminated?

Trump is not the first president to propose dissolving the Department of Education. Established in 1980, conservatives have long criticized the department, claiming it represents federal meddling in education issues better left to the states. In recent years,Trump and his allies have blasted the Department of Education because of policies meant to protect transgender and LGBTQ students and promote racial equity.

France arrests 26 for smuggling migrants from Indian sub-continent

 

Over EUR 11 million in various assets seized following financial investigation

 

A French-led investigation, supported by Europol, has resulted in the dismantling of a large criminal network comprising several small criminal groups involved in migrant smuggling and money laundering. The extensive migrant smuggling and financial investigation of the French National Police (Police aux frontiers/OLTIM Roissy Charles de Gaulle) was supported nationally by the French Inter-ministerial Investigation Unit (GIR Bobigny), and Luxembourg, Portugal, the United Kingdom, among several other EU and non-EU countries.

 

The investigation focused on several interlinked criminal groups that were smuggling migrants from the Indian sub-continent (India, Sri Lanka and Nepal) to Europe, the United Kingdom and North America. The smugglers facilitated migrants’ travel to the EU via Dubai or different African countries using unlawfully obtained tourist, work or medical visas. Migrants would be charged between EUR 15 000 and EUR 26 000 per person for the full smuggling service.

 

The network is believed to have smuggled several thousand people to France since 2022, providing them with flight tickets, fake documents and other resources to facilitate their illegal travel. It is estimated that the groups generated several hundred million euros in illegal profits altogether. In 2024, French authorities arrested 26 suspects in total.

While he would not be able to dismantle the Department of Education on his own, a bill has already been introduced by Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota that would reassign the department’s programs to other agencies. The bill faces high hurdles to passing and would require 60 votes in the Senate.

 

Federal funding comprises just about 10% of most local school districts’ overall budgets on average, said Qubilah Huddleston, who leads policy on equitable school funding for EdTrust, a Washington D.C. think tank focused on education. While access to public education is guaranteed to all students through state constitutions, the federal government’s role is often to ensure specific student populations are being served.

 

Low-income students, students with disabilities, and students learning English in Oakland are all beneficiaries of federal education funding on the K-12 level.

 

“Primarily, the federal government’s job is to ensure that certain student groups receive additional funding,” Huddleston told The Oaklandside. “Federal funding is meant to go on top of what states are already doing.”

 

In Oakland Unified for the 2024-2025 school year, the district’s approved budget includes revenues totaling $767 million. Of that, $52.2 million comes from D.C. The federal money breaks down to about $10 million for special education, $20 million for high-poverty schools, $5 million for career and technical education, and $1.5 million for English learners. Twelve million dollars are allocated from the Every Student Succeeds Act, legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama to reauthorize the George W. Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act that increased federal funding to schools.

 

Nearly 80% of OUSD students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, an indicator of poverty level. Seventy-one OUSD schools, educating more than 30,000 of the district’s 34,000 students, receive Title 1 funds, which range from $2,160 at the district’s home and hospital program that provides schooling to students who are too sick to come to school, to $476,640 at Oakland High, which in the 2024-2025 school year received the highest amount of any school.

 

The money pays for stipends for teachers who support newcomer students, salaries for staff who coach educators, intervention support for students struggling with math or reading, college and career counselors for middle school students, and supplies and technology.

 

Ten million dollars of federal funding goes to special education in OUSD, paying for therapists, paraeducators and aides, and other support for students with disabilities.

 

Huddleston added that the federal Department of Education also plays an accountability role when it comes to testing and student achievement. The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), or the “Nation’s report card” is administered by the Department of Education and offers insight into how students are faring across the country. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, measures like these are crucial, Huddleston said.

 

“We’ve all heard the test score data come out within recent years and we know our students are struggling,” she said. “If the Department of Education goes away, we lose our ability to understand what’s happening on the ground.”

 

And the Department of Education investigates allegations of civil rights violations by school districts.The department’s Office for Civil Rights is currently investigating Oakland Unified for an unauthorized teach-in about Palestine, which a complaint alleges amounted to harassment and discrimination against Jewish students.

TORONTO (AP) — Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the United States should President-elect Donald Trump follow through on his threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products, a senior official said Wednesday.

 

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexicoif the countries don't stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across southern and northern borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders.

 

But Trump posted Wednesday evening on Truth Social that he had a “wonderful conversation" with new Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and she “agreed to stop Migration through Mexico.”

 

“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!” Trump posted.

 

It was unclear what impact the conversation will have on Trump’s plan to impose tariffs.

 

In Canada, a government official said Canada is preparing for every eventuality and has started thinking about what items to target with tariffs in retaliation.The official stressed no decision has been made. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Trump made the threat Monday while railing against an influx of illegal migrants, even though the numbers at Canadian border pale in comparison to the southern border.

 

The U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone — and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian one between October 2023 and September 2024.

 

Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are ready to make new investments in border security and work with the Trump administration to lower the numbers from Canada. The Canadians are also worried about a influx north of migrants if Trump follows through with his plan for mass deportations.

Christine Lagarde has urged Europe’s political leaders to co-operate with Donald Trump over tariffs and buy more products made in the US,warning that an acrimonious trade war risks wiping out global economic growth.

 

The European Central Bank chief said in her first interview since Trump won his second presidential term that the EU needed “not to retaliate, but to negotiate” with a president-elect who has threatened a blanket tariff of up to 20 per cent on all non-Chinese US imports.

 

Lagarde also cautioned that a “trade war at large” was “in nobody’s interest” and would lead to “a global reduction of GDP”. Taking aim at Trump’s claims that he could “make America great again”, the ECB chief said: “How do you make America great again if global demand is falling?”

 

Trump’s victory has raised concerns among national governments and officials in Brussels, who fear tariffs would wipe out the EU’s large trade surplus with the US and spur the region’s manufacturers to shift production there.

 

Lagarde said that Europe should deal with a second Trump term with a “cheque-book strategy” in which it offered “to buy certain things from the United States=”, such as liquefied natural gas and defence equipment. “This is a better scenario than a pure retaliation strategy==, which can lead to a tit-for-tat process where no one is really a winner,” the ECB president said.

 

The European Commission, which runs trade policy for the EU’s 27 member states, is still considering how it would respond.

 

Increasing purchases of US exports, including agricultural products, as well as LNG and weapons, are among the options under consideration, according to officials involved in the preparations.

 

The EU is also preparing to allow US companies to participate in initiatives to support joint military procurement with EU taxpayer money, and to align more closely with the White House on its trade and geopolitical policies towards China.

 

Lagarde has been unusually outspoken for a central banker in voicingher opinion on the US president-elect, saying earlier this year that a second Trump term was “clearly a threat” for Europe. She told the Financial Times this week that the remark was “prescient”.

 

“Just look at the debates that we are having in many countries in Europe,” she said.

 

Her counterpart at the Federal Reserve, Jay Powell, has carefully avoided opining on Trump, despite him tweeting during his first term that the US central bank chair was possibly a “bigger enemy” to the American economy than China.

 

Lagarde said her thinking on how to handle a second Trump term had “changed a bit” over the course of 2024,saying it was also Europe’s responsibility to use the US election result to spur much-needed changes to an economy that was struggling to keep up with its rivals.

 

“It is up to us now — the Europeans — to transform that threat attitude of ours into a challenge that we have to respond to,”the ECB president said. While she disputed claims that Europe was embroiled in a crisis, the current situation was “a big awakening”.

 

Lagarde agreed with her predecessor Mario Draghi’s diagnosis that the EU needed to take drastic action to regain its economic competitiveness, after struggling to keep up with the US over recent decades.

 

“Europe is lagging behind. But I wouldn’t say that Europe cannot catch up,” she said.

 

Economists believe Trump’s threat to impose significant tariffs on Chinese exports to the US could lead Beijing’s manufacturers to flood European markets with their products, presenting a further threat to domestic competitiveness.

 

The dumping of cheap products would exacerbate tensions between the EU and China, one of its main trade partners, and place further pressure on a region beset by economic stagnation since the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

Lagarde talked to the FT earlier on Monday, ahead of Trump’s remarks.

 

She called on Europe to cut through Trump’s campaign rhetoric and to focus on the details of his proposals so far, arguing it was “interesting” that he had suggested introducing tariffs of between 10 and 20 per cent on non-Chinese imports.

 

“The fact that you put out a range means that you are open to discussion,” she said, adding that this created the opportunity to “sit at the table and see how we can work together”.

 

While Lagarde said it was too early to assess the implications of US tariffs on inflation in the Eurozone, overall, she said that “if anything”, the effect was “maybe . . . a little net inflationary in the short term”, pointing to a likely reduction in economic activity and swings in foreign exchange rates. “But you could argue both ways,” she added. “It depends what the tariffs are, what they are applied on and over what period of time.”

 

For Europe, the incoming Trump administration’s stance on trade and transatlantic co-operation were an “accelerator of a reset that we need”,Lagarde said.

 

She singled out the long-standing idea to create a single market for capital in Europe — the so-called Capital Markets Union — and urged the EU to “move quickly” with it. The idea was first proposed by the Juncker Commission in 2014, but so far has been held up by domestic opposition in many of the EU27 member states. “I have not seen such a level of understanding and excitement as we have now,” said Lagarde.

 

She called for capital markets supervision to move from the EU’s 27 national authorities to the European Securities and Markets Authority. “We should have one single supervisor” that “operates like the Securities and Exchange Commission”, Lagarde said, referring to the US’s capital markets watchdog.

 

Asked about the view that Europe’s economy was so outdated and ossified that the continent was turning into a “museum”, Lagarde quipped that “it’s a pretty attractive museum if you ask me”.

 

She pointed to a “huge amount of innovation” across the continent, naming the Dutch farming sector as an example: “Did you know that the Netherlands is the second-largest farming product exporter in the world? Look at the size of the country!”

When Rabbi Yisroel Kozlovsky, co-director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Mumbai, India, heard about the abduction and murder of his colleague, Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a Chabad emissary based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, he had two reactions:

There was, on the one hand, the pain and horror of losing a colleague and friend, followed quickly by resolve for the future.

Though separated by the watery expanse of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, the flight between Mumbai and Dubai is a mere three hours long, making Kozlovsky and his Chabad colleagues in the UAE relative neighbors. What’s more, Kogan’s role in providing kosher food in the Emirates meant that he often served as a conduit for kosher products to Chabad in India.

“This past Passover, we had trouble getting enough matzah for our seder, due to the war in Israel,” Kozlovsky says. “Zvi stepped in to help us get what we needed. We only met face-to-face a few times, so how well did I know him? But he jumped in to help me. He made my problem his problem.” Kogan’s murder was devastating.

Kozlovsky also knew what he needed to do next.

“I told myself I have to fly to New York and be with my fellow Chabad emissaries,” Kozlovsky said. “We all just lost a brother. We need to connect and be together during this time. Not just to commiserate but to reapply ourselves to our purpose ”

It’s in this spirit that Kozlovsky and thousands of Rabbi Zvi Kogan’s colleagues are gathering this week for the 41st annual International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries, also known as the Kinus Hashluchim. Running from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, the gathering unites more than 6,500 rabbis and lay leaders from all 50 U.S. states and more than 100 countries and territories around the world.

The Kinus is an annual event, replete with the workshops on topics running the gamut from mental health to fundraising, and social media to end of life counseling. The four days together culminate with the gala banquet, which brings all of the Chabad rabbis and their guests together in a giant conference center in New Jersey.

By far the most meaningful aspect of the Kinus is the joint visit to the Ohel, the Queens-resting place of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, to pray for their families, communities and humanity at large.

“When you’re alone, the background noise of daily life can overwhelm you, and drown out your focus on the goal,” Kozlovsky says. “But at the Kinus, when you visit the Rebbe’s resting place, connect with friends, you realign yourself. Your mission to connect to and embrace every Jew, comes back to focus. This is why I’m here.”

This year has been a particularly difficult one for Jews, not only in Israel—which since Oct. 7th has seen thousands of rockets rain down on it, including Iranian ballistic missiles—but also around the world. As Jewish communal leaders, Chabad rabbis stand on the frontlines of world Jewry—from the towns of northern Israel to U.S. college campuses, the Ukrainian war zone to the UAE.

“This year has been a near constant march forward,” says Rabbi Chaim Landa, co-director of Chabad Jewish Center of St. Charles County, Mo. “The conference offers a chance to process, and reflect, on everything we’ve been through, but also regroup and forge ahead.”

Rabbi Mendy Alevsky, who, along with his wife Sara, directs Chabad at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, says he reminds his students constantly that this is a responsibility shared by every single Jew, wherever he or she may find themselves.

“My message to my students—and to myself—throughout this past year has been that we are like soldiers,” he says. “As Jews, we all have our own unique mission. The Chabad emissary has his, students have theirs, and so on, but what unites us is comradery of our Jewish peers, the study of Torah and the bond with our Creator.”

The sense of spiritual resolve, and growth, in the face of darkness, reflects the Rebbe’s approach to tragedy. Following a 1956 terror attack on Kfar Chabad, in which five children and a teacher were murdered in cold blood as they prayed, the Rebbe instructed the community to remain strong, to rededicate themselves to Torah and mitzvot, and most importantly, to build.

“Our job has never been clearer,” declared Rabbi Levi Duchman, director of Chabad of the UAE and chief rabbi of the Emirates, at Kogan’s funeral on Monday in Israel. “To remind every Jew who they are and why they are here. The world needs to hear our voices. Do more, stand prouder, fight harder, reach further. This … is about us and our people. We are not just here to survive. We are here to transform the world.”

Ukraine’s mobilization campaign has descended into a ruthless “game of cat and mouse” as recruitment officers scour city streets and public places in a bid to find men, The Telegraph reported on Thursday.

 

The British outlet, citing a Ukrainian draft official and a male Kiev resident,claimed that men appear to be desperately trying to avoid being sent to the front.

 

A recruitment officer working in an eastern Ukrainian city, who asked the paper not to reveal his real name or place of residenceclaimed that detaining would-be recruits is sometimes “like dealing with a cornered rat.”

 

“You’re basically afraid to walk from your home,”a man identified only as Vasily, 35, told The Telegraph, describing the situation in the Ukrainian capital.He subscribes to one of the Ukrainian Telegram channels which tracks the movement of recruitment patrols in the capital.

 

“Men who are the right age for the military draft are scared to walk freely in the street,” Vasily said, adding thathe also avoids trips to the city center and feels anxious about any large car driving slowly near him.

 

Numerous videos of Ukrainianconscription officers conducting raids in various public places, including bars, restaurants, and shopping malls as well as gyms and even in the middle of the streethave surfaced on social media over the past months. In October, one such raid took place at the performance of a popular Ukrainian rock band, Okean Elzy, in Kiev. Later the same month,another raid disrupted a wedding celebration in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.

 

According to the draft official, civilians resist frantically even after they are placed in the recruitment team’s vehicle.He also admitted that the teams often just snatch anyone they can find as they are struggling to meet their draft quotas.

 

“We barely choose whom to stop – now nearly everyone is subject to inspection,” the officer said, adding that he and his team used to avoid stopping “visibly weak individuals” but detain such people as well now.

 

Would-be recruits are not allowed to go home and pack, as many have failed to return voluntarily, the official said.

 

Sometimes, we have to confiscate their phones, depending on the situation,” he added.

 

The families and friends of those conscripted often struggle to find information about the whereabouts of their relativesand loved ones, with many of them asking for help on social media, the British paper reported. It cited the story of a woman who was allegedly looking for her ex-boyfriend on Instagram only to find out that he had been forcibly deployed to the front just a few days after he disappeared.

 

The draft official contacted by The Telegraphadmitted that working as a conscriptor has allowed him avoid being sent to the front himself. “I always have the argument: It’s either them or me,” he told the paper. “I believe it’s better to work for [the draft center] than to hide from it.”

 

Earlier this week, The Economist reported thatUkraine was “out of willing recruits”as the nation was struggling to replenish its military ranks amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. This spring, Kiev significantly tightened mobilization rules, lowering the draft age from 27 to 25 to offset mounting losses, with Ukrainian officials hinting that the bar could be brought down even further.
