Women may not now be so pleased that menopause is officially a disability

When menopause was officially designated as a disability in the UK, no doubt some women were pleased. But if the euthanasia bill is passed, those women might have a change of heart.

 

The number of disorders which are officially described as disabilities has exploded in recent years. And when the menopause was officially designated a disability, there were probably thousands of women who felt grateful.

 

But if the euthanasia bill in the UK goes through then those women might not be so delighted.

 

In countries where euthanasia becomes legal, anyone who can be classified as disabled is at risk.

 

Women who claim that their menopausal symptoms affect their work or require treatment may find themselves offered the permanent solution to their distress.

The New York Times reported last week that some unidentified Western officials had suggested U.S. President Joe Biden could give Ukraine nuclear weapons before he leaves office.

 

"Several officials even suggested that Mr. Biden could return nuclear weapons to Ukraine that were taken from it after the fall of the Soviet Union. That would be an instant and enormous deterrent. But such a step would be complicated and have serious implications," the newspaper wrote.

 

Asked about the report, Peskov told reporters: "These are absolutely irresponsible arguments of people who have a poor understanding of reality and who do not feel a shred of responsibility when making such statements. We also note that all of these statements are anonymous."

 

Earlier, senior Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev said that if the West supplied nuclear weapons to Ukraine then Moscow could consider such a transfer to be tantamount to an attack on Russia, providing grounds for a nuclear response.

 

Ukraine inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union after its 1991 collapse, but gave them up under a 1994 agreement, the Budapest Memorandum, in return for security assurances from Russia, the United States and Britain.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last month that as Ukraine had handed over the nuclear weapons, joining NATO was the only way it could deter Russia.

 

The 33-month Russia-Ukraine war saw escalations on both sides last week, after Ukraine fired U.S. and British missiles into Russia for the first time, with permission from the West, and Moscow responded by launching a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile into Ukraine.

 

Asked about the risk of a nuclear escalation, Peskov said the West should "listen carefully" to Putin and read Russia's newly updated nuclear doctrine, which lowered the threshold for using nuclear weapons.

 

Separately, Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin said Moscow opposes simply freezing the conflict in Ukraine because it needs a "solid and long-term peace" that resolves the core reasons for the crisis.

Abandoned US Army 'city under the ice' imaged in serendipitous NASA find

Deep within the ice sheet of Greenland lies a US military secret that hasn't been seen since the 1960s, but a NASA flyover earlier this year has provided an unprecedented look at the buried Cold War relic.

Camp Century, constructed in 1959 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, was built directly into the ice sheet of Greenland, giving it an interior reminiscent of Echo Base on the frozen world of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.

At the heart of the facility was the PM-2A portable nuclear reactor, which provided power for the sprawling "city under the ice" that included housing for 200 soldiers, a theater, gym, post exchange, library, and even a chapel.

 

The camp was ostensibly built as a scientific outpost, and work at the facility did contribute to modern climate models thanks to ice core drilling – but its true purpose was Project Iceworm, the US Army's plan to deploy hundreds of cold-hardened Minuteman nuclear missiles capable of striking the Soviet Union across Greenland's frozen tundra.

That never came to fruition, leading to Camp Century's abandonment in 1967, after which the installation was buried under accumulating ice and snow. Camp Century is now believed to be at least 30 meters, or 100 feet, below the surface.

The only real look at Camp Century over the decades has been via ground-penetrating radar that provided, at best, a two-dimensional confirmation that some of the thousands of feet of tunnels, and whatever contents were left behind, are still down there.

 

That all changed in April, NASA reported this week, when the space agency's Earth Observatory unexpectedly picked up an anomaly while doing an ice sheet survey using an aircraft equipped with NASA's Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR).

UAVSAR, which in this case was being operated by scientists onboard a Gulfstream III aircraft, has the advantage of shooting radar signals directly downward and at an angle, meaning it's able to produce maps with more dimensionality than typical ground-penetrating radar that only aims straight down.

"We were looking for the bed of the ice and out pops Camp Century," said NASA JPL cryospheric scientist and project co-lead Alex Gardner. "We didn't know what it was at first."

 

JPL glaciologist and remote sensing specialist Chad Greene noted that the serendipitous image captured by UAVSAR shows individual structures of Camp Century that, when compared to existing layout plans, gives an unprecedented view into the state of the facility after nearly 60 years under the ice.

"Our goal was to calibrate, validate, and understand the capabilities and limitations of UAVSAR for mapping the ice sheet's internal layers and the ice-bed interface," Greene noted.

That said, while UAVSAR has granted new insights into the state of Camp Century, the images aren't perfect. NASA noted that, because of the angular nature of part of the capture, a band on the image makes it look like Century is below the ice bed, which is in reality miles below the ice sheet – far deeper than the ruins of the abandoned facility.

The error is due to the angled radar picking up the ice bed further in the distance, NASA explained.

Why Camp Century still matters

Because of the imperfections in the UAVSAR image of Camp Century, the image is "a novel curiosity" rather than a useful bit of scientific data, NASA said.

Understanding more about Camp Century's status, its depth under the ice, and the status of the frozen water above it is critical, however, because it contains a lot of nuclear, biological, and chemical waste that the Army wasn't too worried about in the pre-climate change era.

If current climate change trends continue apace, NASA researchers determined in 2011, all the harmful stuff stored under the ice at Camp Century could leach into the surrounding ice well before surface melting begins to show changes.

 

And there's good reason to worry. There's lots of waste down there. By NASA's estimate, there are around 53,000 gallons of diesel fuel, 6.3 million gallons of waste water, including sewage from the camp's years in service, as well as an unknown quantity of radioactive waste and PCBs.

The Atomic Heritage Foundation estimates the PM-2A reactor may have created more than 47,000 gallons of low-level radioactive waste over its lifetime, and that or more is likely buried beneath the ice too.

Previous 2D radar images of Century show the presence of buried waste material, so scientists know it's there, but without better imaging they can't know if anything has shifted or could begin to leak.

 

NASA estimates that, by 2090, climate change could cause Greenland's ice sheet to destabilize above Camp Century, but that doesn't account for leaching into the ice before surface changes begin.

Camp Century was closed in 1967 after Project Iceworm, which sought to build thousands of miles of tunnels to deploy 600 missiles, failed due to a determination that Greenland's ice sheet was too unstable to support long-term subterranean facilities.

All that remains to note the presence of the facility today is a project led by the governments of Greenland and Denmark to keep watch on the site from a small outpost above the camp, which is located 150 miles inland from the US Space Force's Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, where construction of Camp Century was managed.

 

"Without detailed knowledge of ice thickness, it is impossible to know how the ice sheets will respond to rapidly warming oceans and atmosphere, greatly limiting our ability to project rates of sea level rise," Gardner said.

Environmental damage from Camp Century may be inevitable as the climate continues to change, likely unabated, unless the world's governments take action.

NASA noted that the flight that captured the new images of Camp Century would "enable the next generation of mapping campaigns in Greenland, Antarctica and beyond," though whether additional passes over Camp Century are planned to better map the facility is unknown.

SpaceX to launch NASA’s Dragonfly drone mission to Titan

Over the last few years, the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars made history by proving it was possible to fly a rotorcraft on another planet.

And soon NASA will take that concept one step further by launching a drone mission to explore an even more distant world: Saturn’s icy moon of Titan.

 

The Dragonfly mission is set to explore Titan from the air, its eight rotors keeping it aloft as it moves through the thick atmosphere and passes over the rough, challenging terrain below.

The aim is to look for potential habitability, studying the moon to work out if water-based or hydrocarbon-based life could ever have existed there.

 

Now, NASA has announced it has chosen a launch provider for this important mission, and it will be SpaceX.

With a $256.6 million contract, SpaceX will launch the rotorcraft using a Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the launch window open between July 5, 2028, and July 25, 2028.

 

The Falcon Heavy is SpaceX’s current super heavy launch vehicle, larger than the regularly used Falcon 9 but smaller than the Starship that is currently undergoing testing.

The Falcon Heavy has been used for launching previous NASA missions such as Psyche (an uncrewed mission to visit a metal asteroid) that require more mass than a Falcon 9 supports, but not as much as human spaceflight missions like the Artemis moon missions (which the Starship is intended for).

 

Though the Dragonfly rotorcraft will be small, it will need a heavy-lift launch vehicle to help it on its long mission to Titan.

As this is such a long distance, the use of a more powerful rocket can shorten the cruise phase in which the spacecraft travels through the solar system, meaning it will arrive at Titan earlier — in this case, the plan is for it to arrive in 2034.

 

Once Dragonfly arrives at Titan, it will be able to move between different sites on the moon, which is known for its diverse surface features, including rough and smooth areas as well as lakes and seas made of ethane and methane, plains, dunes, and impact craters.

The rotorcraft will use scientific instruments to measure chemistry on the moon to see whether it could have hosted the conditions for life.

 

“Dragonfly is a spectacular science mission with broad community interest, and we are excited to take the next steps on this mission,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate earlier this year when the mission was confirmed.

“Exploring Titan will push the boundaries of what we can do with rotorcraft outside of Earth.”

Joe Biden's entourage has been dramatically rescued after the White House Osprey caught fire mid-flight, according to a witness.

NASA, JAXA XRISM Mission Looks Deeply Into ‘Hidden’ Stellar System

The Japan-led XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) observatory has captured the most detailed portrait yet of gases flowing within Cygnus X-3, one of the most studied sources in the X-ray sky.

Cygnus X-3 is a binary that pairs a rare type of high-mass star with a compact companion — likely a black hole.

 

“The nature of the massive star is one factor that makes Cygnus X-3 so intriguing,” said Ralf Ballhausen, a postdoctoral associate at the University of Maryland, College Park, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“It’s a Wolf-Rayet star, a type that has evolved to the point where strong outflows called stellar winds strip gas from the star’s surface and drive it outward. The compact object sweeps up and heats some of this gas, causing it to emit X-rays.”

A paper describing the findings, led by Ballhausen, will appear in a future edition of The Astrophysical Journal.

 

“For XRISM, Cygnus X-3 is a Goldilocks target — its brightness is ‘just right’ in the energy range where XRISM is especially sensitive,” said co-author Timothy Kallman, an astrophysicist at NASA Goddard.

“This unusual source has been studied by every X-ray satellite ever flown, so observing it is a kind of rite of passage for new X-ray missions.”

 

XRISM (pronounced “crism”) is led by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) in collaboration with NASA, along with contributions from ESA (European Space Agency).

NASA and JAXA developed the mission’s microcalorimeter spectrometer instrument, named Resolve.

 

Observing Cygnus X-3 for 18 hours in late March, Resolve acquired a high-resolution spectrum that allows astronomers to better understand the complex gas dynamics operating there.

These include outflowing gas produced by a hot, massive star, its interaction with the compact companion, and a turbulent region that may represent a wake produced by the companion as it orbits through the outrushing gas.

 

In Cygnus X-3, the star and compact object are so close they complete an orbit in just 4.8 hours. The binary is thought to lie about 32,000 light-years away in the direction of the northern constellation Cygnus.

While thick dust clouds in our galaxy’s central plane obscure any visible light from Cygnus X-3, the binary has been studied in radio, infrared, and gamma-ray light, as well as in X-rays.

 

The system is immersed in the star’s streaming gas, which is illuminated and ionized by X-rays from the compact companion.

The gas both emits and absorbs X-rays, and many of the spectrum’s prominent peaks and valleys incorporate both aspects.

Yet a simple attempt at understanding the spectrum comes up short because some of the features appear to be in the wrong place.

 

That’s because the rapid motion of the gas displaces these features from their normal laboratory energies due to the Doppler effect.

Absorption valleys typically shift up to higher energies, indicating gas moving toward us at speeds of up to 930,000 mph (1.5 million kph).

Emission peaks shift down to lower energies, indicating gas moving away from us at slower speeds.

 

Some spectral features displayed much stronger absorption valleys than emission peaks.

The reason for this imbalance, the team concludes, is that the dynamics of the stellar wind allow the moving gas to absorb a broader range of X-ray energies emitted by the companion.

The detail of the XRISM spectrum, particularly at higher energies rich in features produced by ionized iron atoms, allowed the scientists to disentangle these effects.

 

“A key to acquiring this detail was XRISM’s ability to monitor the system over the course of several orbits,” said Brian Williams, NASA’s project scientist for the mission at Goddard.

“There’s much more to explore in this spectrum, and ultimately we hope it will help us determine if Cygnus X-3’s compact object is indeed a black hole.”

This includes payloads testing lunar subsurface drilling, regolith sample collection, global navigation satellite system abilities, radiation tolerant computing, and lunar dust mitigation.

The data captured also benefits humanity by providing insights into how space weather and other cosmic forces impact Earth.

 

Under the CLPS model, NASA is investing in commercial delivery services to the Moon to enable industry growth and support long-term lunar exploration.

Spacetech startup TakeMe2Space to launch AI lab in space in December

A Hyderabad-based startup is set to launch an artificial intelligence lab in space on board ISRO's PSLV rocket next month, the company said here on Tuesday.

TakeMe2Space, a space technology firm based in Hyderabad, said its 'Orbital Infrastructure - Technology Demonstrator'(MOI-TD), billed as India's first AI lab in space, will demonstrate real-time data processing in orbit, making space research more affordable and accessible.

 

The MOI-TD launch is scheduled for mid-December aboard ISRO's PSLV C60 mission.

Satellites capture petabytes of data daily, of which up to 40 per cent is potentially unusable due to cloud cover or other factors, which has to be transmitted to Earth for processing.

By processing data directly in space, MOI-TD delivers the relevant insights to users, drastically lowering both the cost of data transmission and latency, said Ronak Kumar Samantray, founder and CEO of TakeMe2Space.

 

Users can access the satellite platform through OrbitLab, a web-based console to upload AI models for applications such as environmental monitoring, deforestation tracking, maritime activity observation, greenhouse gas emission detection and custom earth observation use cases.

The satellite-as-a-service platform has already secured its inaugural research partners, including a leading Malaysian university and an enterprising group of 9th and 10th graders from an Indian school, demonstrating the potential for democratising space research.

 

The mission represents a significant step towards building data centres in space, the company said.

While the current mission focuses on Earth observation applications, the technology paves the way for future space-based computing capabilities that could support a wide range of applications, similar to current cloud computing services.

 

All testing and evaluation of the MOI-TD platform was facilitated by the IN-SPACe Technical Center. IN-SPACe, the single window government agency for all space sector activities of private entities, played a key role in accelerating the development of the platform.

MOI-TD includes control software and hardware components, including reaction wheels, magnetorquers, an advanced onboard computer, and an AI accelerator.

The satellite also features flexible solar cells that could power future satellites, a company statement said.

A trove of leaked audio recordings from late 2022 reveal high-ranking members of Brazil's army discussing efforts to pressure then-President Jair Bolsonaro to carry out a coup and remain in power.

 

The 53 audios, obtained by the Federal Police and accessed by The Associated Press on Monday, provide a rare chance to hear military members expressing in their own voices their desire to keep leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office.

 

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the police’s sprawling investigation, quoted some of those audios in his ruling last week ordering the arrest of five people for plotting the assassination of then-President-elect Lula in 2022 and then attempting to oust him from power on Jan. 8, 2023, when Bolsonaro supporters destroyed government buildings in the capital Brasilia.

 

Audios from one former army officer — who was not among those de Moraes ordered arrested last week — are particularly supportive of a coup, and weren’t referenced in de Moraes’ order.

 

Col. Roberto Raimundo Criscuoli, a former subcommander of the army’s special forces, told retired Brig. Gen. Mario Fernandes, who was then second in command at the general secretary of the presidency, that the far-right leader had a clear choice after Lula won his third, non-consecutive term.

 

“It will be either a civil war now or civil war later. We have a justification now for civil war; people are on the streets, we have massive support,” Criscuoli said in one of the audios. “Let’s do this now. Speak to 01.”

 

01 is a common reference to Brazil’s president.

 

Neither the former president nor his ministers are heard speaking in the recordings. The audios are not directly related to the Nov. 21 formal accusation by Brazil’s police that Bolsonaro and 36 others attempted to stage a coup.

 

The Brazilian army did not respond to a request for comment about the Federal Police investigation.

 

Bolsonaro frequently cast doubt on the election results without providing any evidence and never conceded. He left for the United States days before Lula’s inauguration on Jan. 1, 2023 and stayed there for months, keeping a low profile.The top electoral court has ruled Bolsonaro ineligible to run for president until 2030 for abuse of power, and he is also the target of several investigations for a slew of potential crimes.

 

Other audios are less explicit in their wording about the urgent need for a coup. In a voice message to Gen. Fernandes, Col. Reginaldo Vieira de Abreu used an expression frequently repeated by Bolsonaro to argue the country’s constitution should be ignored.

 

“We are at war, they are winning. It is almost over and they haven’t fired a single shot. It is because of our incompetence,” he said.

 

In an audio from Dec. 8, Bolsonaro’s aide-de-camp, Lt. Col. Mauro Cid, is heard telling Gen. Fernandes that time was running out to keep his boss in office.

 

“On the 12th…It would have to be before the 12th, right?” Cid said, referencing the day that the electoral court would certify Lula’s victory. “I will speak to the president. The thing is his personality sometimes. He waits, waits, waits, waits to see where it is going. To see who supports him. But sometimes time is short, right? We can’t wait much longer.”

 

De Moraes’ arrest order last week makes reference to Cid’s comment, but it did not include his full statement.

 

Cid was already under house arrest, after having signed a plea bargain deal with authorities last year.His testimony has helped authorities collect evidence in different cases targeting Bolsonaro and some of his key aides, including Walter Braga Netto, Bolsonaro’s chief of staff and running mate for reelection.

 

In the audios, Gen. Fernandes, who was among those de Moraes ordered arrested last week,repeatedly claimed Brazil’s presidential election had been rigged for Lulaand insisted the military high command should be pressured to aid Bolsonaro’s cause before his leftist rival assumed power.

 

“Any solution, you know, will not happen without breaking eggs,” he said. “We have to go for it. We have popular support.”

 

Thousands of Bolsonaro followers camped outside army facilities to pressure military leaders to side with the then-president. Media reports at the time said there was not enough support in the high command for a coup. Bolsonaro supporters only returned home after the Jan. 8 riot, upon orders from the newly installed army commander.

One of the ways we know this is because when light travels along that curved space-time, it curves along with it.

This results in light that reaches us all warped and stretched and replicated and magnified, a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing.

This quirk of space-time is not only observable and measurable, it's an excellent tool for understanding the Universe.

 

But a team of researchers has just found that the predicted curvature of space-time calculated using relativity does not always quite match up to what we observe, using data from the Dark Energy Survey that is currently mapping hundreds of millions of galaxies across the cosmos.

That doesn't mean there's something broken – but it does suggest that there may be something out there that we haven't accounted for.

 

"Until now, Dark Energy Survey data have been used to measure the distribution of matter in the Universe," explains physicist Camille Bonvin of the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

"In our study, we used this data to directly measure the distortion of time and space, enabling us to compare our findings with Einstein's predictions."

 

The Dark Energy Survey is an international collaboration that employs a powerful optical instrument mounted on the 4-meter Victor M. Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.

Its main mission, as the name suggests, is to study dark energy, the mysterious force that drives the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

 

To do this, the instrument has been surveying the Universe as deeply as it possibly can. This means that it sees light across a range of epochs, peering deep into the history of the Universe to galaxies whose light has traveled for billions of years to reach us.

Led by astronomer Isaac Tutusaus of the University of Toulouse in France, a team of researchers realized they could use this wealth of data to test the predictive power of Einstein's physical description of the Universe.

They specifically measured the distortions of space-time due to gravity wells, at four distinct epochs: approximately 3.5 billion years ago, 5 billion years ago, 6 billion years ago, and 7 billion years ago.

 

Then, they compared these measurements to what Einstein's equations predict they should be. Interestingly, some of the measurements aligned neatly with the predictions – but not all of them.

"We discovered that in the distant past – 6 and 7 billion years ago – the depth of the wells aligns well with Einstein's predictions," Tutusaus explains.

"However, closer to today, 3.5 and 5 billion years ago, they are slightly shallower than predicted by Einstein."

 

The discrepancy is slight, but it could be important. It could mean, for example, that gravity wells have a slower growth rate more recently in the Universe.

In addition, measurements of the expansion of space-time suggest that the growth of the Universe is speeding up, and has accelerated more in the recent past.

 

The discrepancy could, therefore, suggest a link between the acceleration of the Universe driven by dark energy and the slow growth of gravity wells during the same epoch. More observations will need to be conducted to confirm, and add to, the team's findings.

"Our results show that Einstein's predictions have an incompatibility of 3 sigma with measurements. In the language of physics, such an incompatibility threshold arouses our interest and calls for further investigations," says physicist Natassia Grimm of the University of Geneva.

"But this incompatibility is not large enough, at this stage, to invalidate Einstein's theory. For that to happen, we would need to reach a threshold of 5 sigma.

It is therefore essential to have more precise measurements to confirm or refute these initial results, and to find out whether this theory remains valid in our Universe, at very large distances."

Former acting ICE Director and incoming Border Czar Tom Homan took aim at Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, who has openly declared his willingness to defy federal law to protect illegal immigrants, including those with criminal records, from deportation under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Mayor Johnston’s controversial sanctuary city agenda has drawn sharp criticism for its extreme approach.

In an interview with Denverite, Johnston outlined his vision of Denver as a “fortress of resistance,” complete with human barricades of residents and police officers standing in the way of federal deportation efforts.

Johnston even likened his planned resistance to “a Tiananmen Square moment.”

“More than us having [Denver Police] stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston boasted, adding, “It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment with the rose and the gun, right?” You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them.”

He later admitted the analogy of Tiananmen Square was inappropriate but has not backed down from his broader defiance.

 

When asked about the possibility of jail time for his actions, Johnston shrugged it off, stating, “I’m not afraid of that.”

 

Homan wasted no time pointing out the legal consequences of Johnston’s actions, referencing Title 8, United States Code 1324, which makes it a felony to knowingly harbor or conceal illegal immigrants or impede federal law enforcement.

Sean Hannity: Tom, you heard this mayor out there in Colorado. I want to get your reaction to it, and I want you to be clear about who has jurisdiction—the federal government or state and local governments. And if you’re a sanctuary state or city, are you breaking the law?

 

Tom Homan: You’re absolutely breaking the law. All he has to do is look at Arizona v. United States, and you’ll see he’s breaking the law. Well, look, the Denver mayor and I agree on one thing—he’s willing to go to jail, and I’m willing to put him in jail.

 

There’s a statute, Title 8, United States Code 1324, and what it says is it’s a felony if you knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien from immigration authorities. It’s also a felony to impede a federal law enforcement officer. So, if they don’t want to help, that’s fine—they can get the hell out of the way. But we’re going to go do the job.

This story has tentacles back through, not just the Biden administration,but all the way back to the Obama administration, and it could be something that jeopardizes the broader green energy agenda and the future of leftist solar projects on federal lands. At least one congresswoman is already formally pressing the DOJ for answers, and more members of Congress are likely to get involved soon. It could even have major implications for the incoming administration’s energy policy.

On Nov. 5, at 5:20 p.m. ET, less than an hour before the first polls closed and when it had become clear from the exit polls that Democrat presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris was likely to lose,an attorney with the Justice Department emailed lawyers for plaintiffs in a qui tam lawsuit aimed at recouping significant losses the taxpayers allegedly incurred from a failed solar plant in Nevada. A qui tam lawsuit is when a private plaintiff sues on behalf of the U.S. Government to recoup taxpayer dollars — often alleging fraud, misuse, or theft of taxpayer dollars.

The email from the DOJ stated what plaintiffs started hearing through the grapevine as the election neared and it became clear the Harris campaign was in trouble.The email said that the DOJ intended to dismiss a lawsuit that it had previously allowed to proceed, thereby undercutting the private push to recoup significant losses for American taxpayers.

“The United States intends to intervene in this case for the purpose of dismissing the qui tam claims under 31 U.S.C. 3730(c)(2)(A),” Anthony Gill, a trial lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Division Fraud Section, emailed attorneys for CMB Export, LLC, an EB-5 visa firm that had filed the qui tam lawsuit in question. “The United States has determined that dismissal is commensurate with the public interest and that the matter does not warrant the continued expenditure of government resources. The anticipated discovery and litigation obligations associated with the continued litigation of this case will impose an undue burden on the U.S. Department of the Treasury, U.S. Department of Energy, and U.S. Department of Justice.”

“We intend to file our motion this week,” Gill added in the email, obtained by Breitbart News. “There is not more I can add to the United States’ decision to seek dismissal under 3730(c)(2)(A), but feel free to let us know if you have any questions.”=

This decision was shocking to plaintiffs because it represented a major reversal of the position the very same Biden Justice Department had previously taken. The Justice Department had, after years of inexplicable delays, previously declined to intervene in the qui tam suit per a filing on June 1, 2023 — it took the Department years to finally get to this point — and then the case was unsealed finally on Jan. 24, 2024 — eleven months ago — after a battle on that front in court. In laymen’s terms, what the Justice Department formally declining to intervene in a qui tam suit and then the suit getting unsealed by the court means is the plaintiffs in the qui tam suit can proceed with litigation against the defendants.

This story begins back during Obama’s administration, when leftists and environmentalists supercharged a crazed push towards so-called renewable energy sources. The federal government under Obama backed what was called the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project with $737 million in guaranteed loans. The plant was a $1 billion project.

Ostensibly, what Crescent Dunes was building was a 1,600-acre plant in the Nevada desert designed to use mirrors to capture sunlight to heat molten salt in a giant tower to create energy. “The plant was supposed to generate clean energy using more than 10,000 mirrors to heat molten salt in a 640-foot-high tower,” the Las Vegas Review Journal wrote in a 2020 editorial about the project’s failures. “The superheated salt would then boil water, creating steam to produce power. Making this endeavor even more exciting was that salt was supposed to be able to store heat and produce electricity after sunset.”

Then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, had talked for years about making the Silver State “the Saudi Arabia of geothermal and solar energy.” This fit the bill. Reid, who has since retired and passed away, now has the Las Vegas airport named after him. While he is gone, the=U.S. taxpayer is still allegedly out with what sources familiar with the details of the lawsuit say is more than $200 million, and could be as high as $700 million or even moredepending on factors such as depreciation and loan guarantees.

 

The plant went into bankruptcy in 2020 after years of failing to return any profit, but as of 2021, it was reportedly operating again somewhat under a different ownership structure per a local news report from 8NewsNow in Nevada. That story detailed some of the problems with the technology as well.

 

=“In addition to its struggles to turn a profit, the plant also was criticized because birds were dying in the intense heat produced by the panels. Some reports indicated that birds had burst into flames in mid-flight,” the 8NewsNow report from 2021 from a Las Vegas television station reads. “Another problem surrounded a report that workers were hospitalized after they were exposed to nitrogen dioxide — a gas emitted from the hot salt tank.”

 

These and other major problems with the technology and operations at the Crescent Dunes plant that significantly delayed its launch — and even took the plant offline for a year —call into question the legitimacy of cash grants, guaranteed loans, and depreciation benefits and whether American taxpayers were essentially bilked out of the cash and are now owed money.

 

That is what the qui tam lawsuit aimed to rectify, and that is where CMB Export, LLC comes in. CMB’s interest is, as an EB-5 visa firm, they say they are out tens of millions of dollars because of the failed project. So, they began investigating what happened and uncovered thesemajor concerns with regard to how the Obama administration awarded these grants and other taxpayer-funded benefits, which are the basis for the qui tam lawsuit. The Biden Justice Department slow-walked it for years but finally approvedthe case to move forward procedurally. Everything was going smoothly until just before the election, a couple days out from Trump’s triumph over Harris, when CMB began hearing that the Biden Justice Department may reverse its support for the lawsuit.

 

Notice of that reversal is what formally came in those Election Night emails from the DOJ official, followed by a filing the next day in court seeking the dismissal of the qui tam case. The timing begs questions regarding why the Biden Justice Department would — from all appearances — seek to cover this up before Donald Trump would win the Presidential Election and Republicans would control both houses in Congress.

 

There is growing interest in Congress about getting answers from the DOJ.

Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV) wrote on Monday to Attorney General Merrick Garland to demand answers about the election night reversal.

 

“I am writing to express my concern regarding the Department of Justice’s recent decision to intervene and dismiss the qui tam case filed by CMB Export, LLC, under the False Claims Act against Tonopah Solar Energy, LLC, Cobra Energy Investment, and other associated parties,” Miller wrote to Garland in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Breitbart News.“This case, centered on allegations of significant fraud and misrepresentation regarding the Crescent Dunes Project, raises serious questions about the use of taxpayer funds and the federal government’s commitment to holding parties accountable for alleged misconduct. The timing of the Department’s decision to dismiss this case is particularly troubling. After three and a half years of investigation, during which the case was under seal, the Department chose to allow CMB Export to proceed with prosecution as of August 2023. However, on November 6, 2024—just one day after the presidential election—the Department reversed course, intervening to dismiss the case with no clear justification provided beyond vague references to ‘public interest’ and the ‘expenditure of government resources.’”

“Officials at the federal Bureau of Land Management announced Aug. 29 they had finalized a plan to add Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming to its existing Western Solar Plan – an Obama-era project that expanded permitting for solar projects on federal land,” the Oregon Capital Chronicle’s Alex Baumhardt wrote in September. “When it was first implemented in 2012, it only included Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.”

 

This expansion includes millions and millions of federal land acres across these major wide-open western states, and it will be critical how Secretaries Burgum and Wright handle all of this.

 

As for Treasury, incoming Secretary Scott Bessentjust announced last week as Trump’s pick to lead the important Treasury Department —=will have to decide if his Department was lied to by the Energy Department when the cash grants were made during the Obama administration.

 

The newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to be led by businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, could also end up weighing in on the bloated bureaucracy and waste of taxpayer resources on projects such as Crescent Dunes.

 

Trump himself of course has promised to revitalize American energy and has regularly criticized green Leftist projects like this.

Moscow will consider any threat of nuclear arms being supplied to Ukraine by the US as preparation for a direct war with Russia, former president Dmitry Medvedev has warned. The actual transfer of nuclear weapons would be tantamount to an attack on the country under Russia’s new nuclear doctrine, he added.

 

In a Telegram post on Tuesday, Medvedev referenced a recent report in the New York Times. In a piece bylined by four of its journalists, the NYT claimed that US and EU officials are “discussing deterrence as a security guarantee” for Ukraine, claiming a conversation is underway to consider giving Ukraine nuclear weapons.

 

US politicians and journalists are seriously discussing the consequences of providing Kiev with nuclear weapons, said Medvedev, who serves as the deputy chair of the Russian Security Council.

 

“Looks like my sad joke about crazy senile Biden, who’s eager to go out with a bang and take a substantial part of humanity with him, is becoming dangerously real,” he said.

 

Medvedev argued that the idea of “giving nukes to a country that’s at war with the greatest nuclear power” is so absurd that Biden and anyone else considering such a step must have “massive paranoid psychosis.”

 

The former president said the threat of transferring nuclear weapons to Kiev would be viewed as preparation for a nuclear conflict with Russia.

The move came as the US and several Western nations allowed Ukraine to use foreign-made long-range weapons for strikes deep inside Russia, despite Moscow’s warning that this would escalate the conflict and result in NATO’s direct participation in the hostilities.

 

The document allows Moscow to treat an attack by a non-nuclear state, backed by a nuclear power, as equivalent to direct nuclear aggression.

The Pentagon's statement clarifies reports of approximately 11,000 North Korean troops amassing in Russia's Kursk Oblast, training alongside Russian troops in the fight against Ukraine. A Pentagon spokesperson said on Nov. 13 that some North Korean troops have already been deployed to fight together with Russian forces.

 

A source with Ukraine's General Staff also indicated to Reuters on Nov. 23 that the majority of North Korean soldiers were finalizing training.

 

In recent months, Russia has focused on regaining territory lost in the country's Kursk Oblast following a surprise Ukrainian incursion into the region in August. According to the source in Ukraine's General Staff, Ukraine has lost over 40 percent of the territory it previously gained in Kursk Oblast due to Russian counterattacks.

 

NATO allies believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is aiming to recapture territory lost in Kursk Oblast before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, the Telegraph reported, hoping to gain leverage in future peace negotiations.

 

Addressing unconfirmed reports that upwards of 500 North Korean troops have been killed in Kursk, Singh said that the U.S. could not independently confirm the casualties.

 

"What we've said before is that they're in (the Kursk) region and certainly poised to engage the Ukrainians in combat. But I can't confirm those reports that there have been casualties yet."

 

Moscow and Pyongyang signed a strategic partnership agreement in June, pledging to provide military support to one another if either country comes under attack.

 

On Nov. 25, Reuters reported, citing researchers at the U.S.-based James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, that North Korea is expanding a key weapons production complex that assembles KN-23 short-range ballistic missiles used by Russia against Ukraine.

Solar maximum just knocked 3 satellites out of orbit. Here's why more may be on the way.

In early November, three tiny Australian satellites from Curtin University's Binar Space Program burned up in Earth's atmosphere.

That was always going to happen. In fact, Binar means "fireball" in the Noongar language of the First Nations people of Perth.

When a satellite is in low Earth orbit (2,000km or less), it experiences orbital decay as it drags closer and closer to the surface, eventually burning up.

 

But these cube satellites (CubeSats), known as Binar-2, 3 and 4, entered the atmosphere much sooner than originally planned. They only lasted for two months — a third of what was expected.

This significantly reduced valuable time for science and testing new systems.

 

The reason for their untimely demise? Our Sun has kicked into high gear, and the Binar satellites are far from the only casualty.

Recent high solar activity has been causing an unexpected headache for satellite operators in the last few years, and it's only increasing.

Solar activity includes phenomena such as sunspots, solar flares and solar wind — the stream of charged particles that flows toward Earth.

 

This activity is a product of the Sun's ever-changing magnetic field, and approximately every 11 years, it completely flips. At the midpoint of this cycle, solar activity is at its highest.

While this cycle is known, specific solar activity is challenging to predict — the dynamics are complex and solar forecasting is in its infancy.

In the last few months, indicators of solar activity were more than one and a half times higher than predictions for this point in the current cycle, labelled solar cycle 25.

 

What happened to Binar?

The Binar Space Program is a satellite research program operating out of Curtin University. It aims to advance our understanding of the Solar System and lower the barrier for operating in space.

The program began operations with its first satellite, Binar-1, in September 2021. This was less than a year into solar cycle 25 when solar activity was relatively low.

In these conditions, the ten-centimetre cube satellite started at an altitude of 420km and survived a full 364 days in orbit.

 

The program's follow-up mission — Binar-2, 3, and 4 — were three equally sized CubeSats. However, they were expected to last approximately six months owing to the extra surface area from new deployable solar arrays and a forecast increase in solar activity.

Instead, they only made it to two months before burning up. While cube satellite missions are relatively cheap, the premature ending of a mission will always be costly.

This is even more true for commercial satellites, highlighting the need for more accurate space weather forecasting.

 

The good news is the Sun will calm down again. Despite the current unexpectedly high solar activity, it will likely slow down by 2026, and is expected to return to a solar minimum in 2030.

While this was not an explicit goal of the mission, the Binar Space Program has now poignantly demonstrated the dramatic effects of solar activity on space operations.

While the untimely loss of Binar-2, 3 and 4 was unfortunate, work has already begun on future missions. They are expected to launch into far more forgiving space weather.

Russia expels British diplomat over ‘spying’ fears – RT

The UK national made false statements when entering the country, Moscow’s security agency has said

An employee of the British Embassy in Moscow has been deemed a security threat, after Russian investigators found inconsistencies in his paperwork, the FSB security service announced on Tuesday.

 

The individual, who is suspected of being a spy, has been ordered to leave the country, the statement said.

 

The British official was identified as Wilks Edward Prior, who the FSB said holds the position of second secretary in the Embassy's political department. The agency claimed the man was sent to Moscow as a replacement for one of the six alleged intelligence officers that Russia expelled in August.

 

”When applying for a visa, [Prior] intentionally made false statements, which is a violation of Russian law,” the statement said. “The FSB also found signs that the diplomat was conducting intelligence and sabotage activities that threaten the security of the Russian Federation.”

 

The FSB noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry and other government bodies had weighed in on the decision to revoke Prior's diplomatic credentials and order him to leave Russia within two weeks.

 

The British Foreign Office and the Russian Foreign Ministry have yet to comment on the announcement.

 

After the FSB statement was issued, Russian media reported seeing an Embassy car driving towards the Foreign Ministry building. Ambassador Nigel Casey is believed to have been summoned to be formally notified about the development.

 

In mid-September, the FSB announced that it had determined six Embassy staff members to be security threats. The Russian agency claimed at the time that London was playing a key role in the “escalation of the international military-political situation” and the Western campaign to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.

Sweden and Finland recently gave up neutrality to join Nato after witnessing the atrocities Putin has unleashed in Ukraine since 2022.

 

While Sweden and Norway have not shied away from warning residents of war via pamphlet, Finland's Helsinki government decided not to print a copy for each home.

Scientists have detected the most energetic cosmic rays ever discovered, and they're being produced by mysterious sources relatively close to Earth.

The rays — which consist of electrons and their antimatter counterparts, positrons — were observed at energies all the way up to 40 teraelectronvolts (TeV), or 40,000 times the energy of visible light.

 

Spotted by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) observatory in Namibia, the rays lose energy as they travel through space due to their interactions with light and magnetic fields.

This means that for rays of this energy to be detected, their sources must be relatively nearby. Yet what, exactly, is producing them remains unknown. The researchers published their findings Nov. 25 in the journal Physical Review Letters.

 

"This is an important result, as we can conclude that the measured CRe [cosmic ray electrons] most likely originate from very few sources in the vicinity of our own solar system, up to a maximum of a few 1000 light years away, a very small distance compared to the size of our Galaxy," corresponding author Kathrin Egberts, head of experimental astroparticle physics at the University of Potsdam in Germany, said in a statement. (For comparison, the Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years across.)

 

Cosmic rays are high-energy particles produced by the sun; stellar explosions called supernovas; rapidly spinning neutron stars called pulsars; and other, unknown sources.

When the rays smash into Earth's upper atmosphere, they break into showers of particles that are detectable on Earth's surface. But reconstructing the rays that produced these particle showers is a painstaking and uncertain task.

 

To find the cosmic ray electrons, the researchers used the HESS observatory, an array of five 40-foot (12 meters) telescopes in the Khomas Highland of Namibia.

Over a decade, the telescopes scanned the upper atmosphere for faint signs of Cherenkov radiation left in the wake of the fast-moving rays.

Just as a plane traveling faster than the speed of sound creates a sonic boom, a particle moving through a light-slowing medium faster than light creates a faint blue glow around it.

 

By looking for this glow and using sophisticated algorithms to sift out noise, the scientists created an energy spectrum for the rays hitting Earth in unprecedented detail.

The quantities of these rays decreased drastically at higher energy scales — meaning it will be difficult for smaller space-based detectors to find them in sufficient numbers.

Yet the presence of particularly energetic particles gave the scientists a clear indication that at least some of the rays' sources are close to our planet.

 

"The very low fluxes at larger TeV limit the possibilities of space-based missions to compete with this measurement," corresponding author Mathieu de Naurois, a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris, said in the statement.

"Thereby, our measurement does not only provide data in a crucial and previously unexplored energy range, impacting our understanding of the local neighbourhood, but it is also likely to remain a benchmark for the coming years."

FSB chief warns of escalation over US-backed strikes on Russia

Residents of Selidovo have testified about Kiev’s forces committing war crimes

The Russian Foreign Ministry has accusedUkrainian forces of executing civilians in a Donbass town as part of a “false flag” operation designed to wrongly frame Moscow for war crimes. Witnesses claim that mercenaries,including alleged Polish nationals, carried out the killings before retreating in the face of advancing Russian troops.

 

Selidovo, located about 15 kilometers south of Pokrovsk in Donetsk, was under Kiev’s control until it was fully secured by Russian forces on October 29.The town had an estimated population of 21,000 in 2022.

 

Rodion Miroshnik, a senior Ministry official tasked with gathering evidence of Ukrainian war crimes, stated on Monday that the killings were part of a deliberate effort by Kiev to accuse Russia of atrocities. “When the West started talking about peace negotiations, [Vladimir] Zelensky started preparing ‘Bucha 2’, but in Selidovo,”he told RIA Novosti.

 

Miroshnik further claimed thatresidents who fled the town testified to dozens of civilians being executed in the streets by Ukrainian soldiers and foreign mercenaries. “They said that the ‘Nazis’ [a term commonly used by Donbass residents to describe Kiev’s forces]staged a bloodbath two or three days before the city was taken by Russian troops,” he added. Witnesses provided names, addresses, and descriptions of the perpetrators, some of whom were said to speak Polish and wear Ukrainian uniforms.

 

One testimony came from Vladimir Romanenko, who described=how Ukrainian soldiers killed five of his family members and burned their bodies. “I went out into the street and heard shouting. A short man was shouting, ‘Everyone out of the house, face the wall!’ And he began to shoot,”Romanenko said. He explained that he managed to escapebut later identified the bodies of his wife, sister, son, grandson, and niece, all of whom had been shot.

 

An unnamed local woman recounted that the killings occurred aftercivilian representatives of the Ukrainian state left the town: “There was no one there. Everyone left. We were abandoned. They said there are no residents in Selidovo.They didn’t even bring us bread.”

 

Miroshnik suggested that Ukrainian forces and mercenariesattempted to blame Russia for the massacre but failed to complete the operation in time.

 

The accusations mirror a narrative that emerged in early April 2022, when Ukrainian media published images and videos of bodies in Bucha, claiming they were victims of Russian troops. Moscow has consistently denied these claims, asserting the scene was staged by Kiev.

Any move by outgoing US PresidentJoe Biden to help Ukraine obtain nuclear weapons would be “insane” and would amount to treason, Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene has claimed.

 

The House representative from Georgia was reacting to a post on Tuesday by entrepreneur Mario Nawfal, who weighed in on a New York Times article, bylined by four of its journalists,claiming that US and EU officials are “discussing deterrence as a security guarantee” for Ukraine, including giving Kiev nuclear weapons.

 

Nawfal described the purported talks as a “desperate” move “to tip the scales against Russia” before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January,which would mark an “unprecedented escalation” in the conflict.

 

Responding to the post, Greene wonderedwhether Biden administration is “trying to start a nuclear war and use it as the reason to stop the transfer of power to Trump.”

 

“This is insane and completely unconstitutional, possibly an act of treason,” she wrote on X.

 

The White House is resorting to more aggressive measures in aiding Kiev ahead of Trump’s return. The Republican has repeatedly vowed to end the Ukraine conflict swiftly, and is expected to try to push Moscow and Kiev toward peace talks.

 

With two months left in office, Biden last week reportedly gave in to one of Ukraine’s long-standing demands and authorized the use of American-supplied ATACMS missiles on targets deep within Russian territory.The missiles had already been used in strikes on Russia’s Crimea, Donetsk, and Lugansk regions, which Washington considers Ukrainian.

 

Last week, the New York Times reported that certain US officials have suggested that Biden might provide Kiev with nuclear weapons as a deterrent against Russia.“That would be an instant and enormous deterrent,” the paper argued, noting however that such a step would be “complicated and have serious implications.”

 

Russia recently updated its nuclear doctrine, allowing for a nuclear response to a conventional attack by a non-nuclear state that is supported by a nuclear power, such as a missile strike on Russian territory. Moscow also used a new medium-range hypersonic missile against Ukraine in response to Kiev’s use of foreign-made long-range weapons for strikes deep into Russia.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the attacks have moved the Ukraine conflict to a global level. He has repeatedly warned that Moscow will consider an attack by Western long-range weapons on Russian soil as directly involving the countries that donated the arms.

The actual transfer of nuclear weapons would be tantamount to an attack on the country under Russia’s new nuclear doctrine, he added.

 

In a Telegram post on Tuesday, Medvedev referenced a recent report in the New York Times. In a piece bylined by four of its journalists, the NYT claimed that US and EU officials are “discussing deterrence as a security guarantee” for Ukraine, claiming a conversation is underway to consider giving Ukraine nuclear weapons.

 

US politicians and journalists are seriously discussing the consequences of providing Kiev with nuclear weapons, said Medvedev, who serves as the deputy chair of the Russian Security Council.

 

“Looks like my sad joke about crazy senile Biden, who’s eager to go out with a bang and take a substantial part of humanity with him, is becoming dangerously real,”he said.

 

Medvedev argued that the idea of “giving nukes to a country that’s at war with the greatest nuclear power” is so absurd thatBiden and anyone else considering such a step must have “massive paranoid psychosis.”

 

The former president said the threat of transferring nuclear weapons to Kiev would be viewed as preparation for a nuclear conflict with Russia.

 

“The fact of transferring such weapons may be considered as the launch of an attack against our country in accordance with Paragraph 19 of the ‘Basic Principles of State Policy on Nuclear Deterrence’,” he wrote.

 

Medvedev was referring to Russia’s recently revised nuclear doctrine in which President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for Moscow’s use of its nuclear weapons.

 

Putin ordered a change in the nation’s nuclear doctrine in late September and approved the document on November 19. The move came as the US and several Western nations allowed Ukraine to use foreign-made long-range weapons for strikes deep inside Russia, despite Moscow’s warning that this would escalate the conflict and result in NATO’s direct participation in the hostilities.

 

The document allows Moscow to treat an attack by a non-nuclear state, backed by a nuclear power, as equivalent to direct nuclear aggression.

 

Last week, Russia carried out a strike on Ukraine using the latest Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic missile, saying it was a response to Kiev’s cross-border attacks using US-made ATACMS and HIMARS systems, as well as British-made Storm Shadow missiles.
