In the early 1980s, I received degrees in computer science and mathematics. I had excellent pay in the computer programing industry. All of my friends in CS also received good jobs and excellent pay.

 

Around 1990, employers decided to outsource computer programing (mostly to India) to save money. It was a disaster. The Indian programmers didn't understand the problems and their english skills were very poor.

 

They then tried insourcing. They were brought in on the H1B visa program and paid them 1/3rd of the money paid to US programmers, who were then summarily fired. Many of my friends had to train the Indian programmers before being fired. Many US programmers left the industry inorder to make a decent living.

 

The idea that we didn't have the skills then was a complete lie and it's a complete lie now. It's all about dirt cheap labor. Those are the REAL facts!! #MAGA #H1B

I've worked in tech 25 years.

 

Used to be no immigrants during the 90s explosion.  White dudes built the entire framework everything rides on.

 

Then a series of offshoring waves started and continued to cascade.

 

We're talking 15-20 years of building foreign labor pipelines as your priority.  An ungodly amount of money has been invested in employment outsourcing networks in India because they make about $0.20 (or less) on the US $1 wage, and there is no 7.65% or any other costs associated.

 

They're just paying a flat fee to a "consulting firm" who does all the on the ground leg work in India.

 

The H1B program is a carrot to bring over the contractors that actually can do the job and rise above entry level.  They want to elevate them as perm hires.  Let's not pretend like you are scouting for great talent and bringing in high value prospects.  You don't do that.  This is about managing wages.

 

H1B is just creating an incentive driver for an offshore workforce.  When they come over, they do as many say - they create nepotistic informal networks.

 

Once they got a toehold here they partnered with folks back home to create contractor to H1B pipelines to grease the wheels and a growing inertia never stopped.

 

You say you will cease to be competitive if we slam the door shut oh H1Bs.  It's not because there isn't a capable US domestic workforce that can be cultivated to create domestic talent pipelines.

 

It's because of the Porter's 5 Forces model.  India has become the source of cheap global tech labor and if you don't make use of it others will.  They'll have better margins than you and be able to cut your throat in the market.

 

Or so you say.

 

What you aren't telling people is that domestic US innovators threaten the current system all the time - well until ESG, Fink and the Biden admin slammed the door on domestic hiring and thus domestic talent development.

 

What is generally done is use quantitative easing magic infinity bucks to buy out upstarts before they could disrupt.  Or put them out of business with the regulatory state.  Or collude with vendors to squeeze them.  Or sometimes all of the above.

ChatGPT Mystery: Deceased OpenAI Whistleblower Had Been Approached to Testify Against Company

The Guardian reports that Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former engineer at OpenAI, died on November 26, 2024 in what San Francisco police said appeared to be a suicide. Prior to his death, Balaji had been identified by lawyers as a potential star witness who likely had unique and relevant documents that could support allegations of copyright infringement against the AI company.

 

During his nearly four years at OpenAI before resigning in August 2024, Balaji played an essential role in developing some of the company’s key products, including WebGPT which paved the way for ChatGPT. Most recently, he had been organizing the massive datasets of online writings and media used to train GPT-4, OpenAI’s flagship large language model.

 

It was this work that led Balaji to publicly question in October 2024 whether OpenAI’s practices of training its AI systems on people’s data and then competing with them in the marketplace may be illegal copyright infringement. He told the Associated Press he would “try to testify” in the strongest copyright cases against the company, including one brought by the New York Times in 2023.

 

While acknowledging his was an unpopular opinion within the AI research community, Balaji felt pulling data from the internet to train AI without permission would have to change, telling AP “they will have to change and it’s a matter of time.” He had grown increasingly disillusioned with OpenAI, especially after internal turmoil in 2023 and the departures of key leaders.

Scientists believe the virus – which has spread across bird and cattle farms in the US and caused more than 60 mild human infections – could jump more easily to people in future.

 

California has declared a state of emergency over the virus, which has been found in more than 600 dairy farms there in the last four months.

 

The woman from Louisiana needed hospital treatment for the disease. Another severe bird flu case was reported in a teenager in British Columbia, Canada.

 

A genetic analysis of the woman’s disease found that the bird flu virus – known officially as H5N1 – had mutated inside her body. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the mutations may allow the virus to better bind to receptors in the upper airways of humans.

 

The Louisiana patient was in a critical condition with severe respiratory symptoms after coming in contact with sick and dead birds. The patient, who has not been identified, is older than 65 and has underlying medical problems, officials said earlier this month.

 

The CDC said there has been no known transmission of the virus from the Louisiana patient to anyone else. It said its findings about the mutations were “concerning”, but the risk to the general public from the outbreak “has not changed and remains low”.

 

The outbreak on dairy farms has also prompted fresh warnings over the consumption of raw milk, where the virus has been found in samples on sale to the public.

 

There is no evidence H5N1 has been transmitted to humans via the milk, although public health officials advise consumers not to drink it.

 

Unpasteurised “raw” milk is favoured by Robert F Kennedy Jr, Donald Trump’s choice as health secretary, who recently asked a California producer of the milk to apply for a job as an adviser to the federal government.

 

Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, imposed a state of emergency over bird flu on Dec 18, noting that it had been found in dairy herds in 16 states.

 

An animal sanctuary in Shelton, Washington state, has also been placed under quarantine after the outbreak killed 20 big cats at the facility over the past month. The virus has claimed more than half its animals, including four cougars and a Bengal tiger, since late November.

 

Michael Osterholm, a University of Minnesota infectious disease researcher, warned that bird flu could become a major pandemic similar to coronavirus.

 

“There will be additional influenza pandemics and they could be much worse than we saw with Covid,” he told the Associated Press. “We know that the pandemic clock is ticking. We just don’t know what time it is.”

i was unemployed for 9 months after being laid off as a mechanical engineer with process engineering experience… applied to about everything i could… got almost no interviews and the only jobs i could get were shit… i was also a top graduate of my class.. presidents and dean's list … graduated with an overall 3.4 GPA and a 3.7GPA from my university… never did what the asians did to pad my GPA either… like withdrawing from them when i knew i wouldnt get a perfect A or avoiding the harder courses/teachers because of it either

 

i am pretty sure a combination of h1b and dei practices is what fucked me for so long… and the jobs i could get were well below the pay i should be making for my abilities… and still am even though im starting a true engineering section for this developing company from the ground up and unfucking its systems…

It’s conceivable that a future American President will address the nation from the Oval Office on the day NASA successfully lands astronauts on Mars. They will likely praise the blood, sweat and tears it took to travel 140 million miles to the Martian surface. However, those same bodily fluids could be vital building materials for long-term habitation on the Red Planet.

With the vast distances involved, any manned mission to Mars won’t be able to haul substantial solid buildings to another planet. The easiest solution would be to use what’s already there. Researchers from Kharazmi University in Tehran, Iran explored several possible materials. Their findings were published in the journal Acta Astronautica. An excerpt from the report reads:

 

“Although it is a bit strange, blood can be utilized to create strong concrete or bricks for onsite construction on Mars. After the arrival of the first Martian inhabitants and their placement in primary structures, which can include inflatable structures, the combination of tears, blood, and sweat from the inhabitants, along with Martian regolith, can be used to produce a concrete known as AstroCrete. The production process is simple.”

AstroCrete, also known as blood concrete, is a mixture of Martian rocks and bodily fluid. The waterless concrete is considered an ideal solution for the extremely arid environment. Researchers estimated that it would take 72 weeks for a crew member to generate enough fluid to build a habitat. Once more astronauts arrive on Mars, there would be a steady stream of fluid. The base expansion would be self-sustaining. More habitats allow for more people. More people means more fluid.

 

The researchers note that ancient Romans used animal blood to reinforce their mortar. However, AstroCrete has some issues. Living on Mars will be a physical challenge and forcing astronauts to constantly donate blood would hamper progress on all other projects on the Martian surface. Also, the material’s low density would offer lackluster protection against cosmic radiation.

Space programs will find a long-term construction solution for Mars eventually. Considering NASA’s delays in returning to the Moon, the agency has plenty of time to brainstorm ways to build on the Red Planet without literally bleeding it’s astronauts dry.

I have over the past year contacted over 10.000 politicians in my country with notes on the dangers of vaccination, and I have also been trying to make a plea to protect children from cities to protect them from pedophiles and rape, instead to have children grow up in safety with their parents in an thought-out environment such as out in the countryside learning about farming, the forest and the oceans to become self-reliant individuals as adults.

 

I do not know the end results thereof, but hopefully there will be children spared the deadly poison being forced on humanity via vaxxination and lgbtq.

4.2. AstroCrete or blood concrete

Ancient Romans utilized organic additives, including animal blood, primarily to improve the durability and workability of their mortar [99]. However, it is possible to create high-performance concrete using blood as a primary component. Although it is a bit strange, blood can be utilized to create strong concrete or bricks for onsite construction on Mars [100]. After the arrival of the first Martian inhabitants and their placement in primary structures, which can include inflatable structures, the combination of tears, blood, and sweat from the inhabitants, along with Martian regolith, can be used to produce a concrete known as AstroCrete (Fig. 7a) [101]. The production process is simple. Aggregates (Martian regolith) bind together through contact with human serum albumin (HAS), a protein found in blood plasma. Over a period of 72 weeks, a crew member could generate sufficient HAS to construct a small habitat for another crew member [100]. Also, it is possible to increase compressive strength, improve ductility (better plastic behavior) and decrease the brittle behavior of the AstroCrete by adding carbamide (urea), a compound that can be extracted from sweat, tears and urine [102]. This concrete could be used in 3D printers and would be cured in the atmosphere of Mars (Fig. 7b). The following pros and cons can be listed for construction on Mars using AstroCrete.

AstroCrete is a waterless concrete, making it suitable for the dry environment of Mars.

•

The compressive strength and Young’s modulus of the AstroCrete (using MGS-1 + HAS + urea) could reach almost 12 MPa and 1 GPa, respectively [103]. This is not suitable for structural design.

Due to its relatively low density, AstroCrete may not be effective as a cosmic ray shield.

•

AstroCrete requires massive imports from Earth. In other words, one of the main compositions (blood) depends on the astronauts or space travelers that should be imported from Earth.

•

AstroCrete is a new concrete, and its long-term behavior in harsh Martian environments is not yet well understood.

•

AstroCrete can be used in 3D printers, enabling remote and automated construction on Mars.

•

With an increasing number of inhabitants on Mars, there would be a steady supply of blood for producing AstroCrete (steady expansion), facilitating the construction of low-cost Martian bases.

•

Martian missions are long-term and can have adverse effects on human health, including insomnia, joint pain, and headaches [81]. These health issues could potentially impact the use of blood and blood donation for AstroCrete production. The effects of blood donation on the health of settlers on Mars should also be considered. Russia-linked cable-cutting tanker seized by Finland ‘was loaded with spying equipment’

 

agle S, the Russia-linked tanker suspected of damaging an underwater electricity cable on Christmas Day, was kitted out with special transmitting and receiving devices that were used to monitor naval activity, according to a source with direct involvement in the ship, which has since been detained by Finnish police.

 

RUSSIA-LINKED dark fleet* tanker Eagle S (IMO: 9329760), seized by Finland on December 25 for damaging an undersea cable, had transmitting and receiving devices installed that effectively allowed it to become a “spy ship” for Russia, Lloyd’s List has learnt.

 

The hi-tech equipment on board was abnormal for a merchant ship and consumed more power from the ship’s generator, leading to repeated blackouts, a source familiar with the vessel who provided commercial maritime services to it as recently as seven months ago.

 

As well as Eagle S, another related tanker from the same ownership cluster, UK-sanctioned Swiftsea Rider (IMO: 9318539), also had similar equipment installed, Lloyd’s List was told.

 

Cook Islands-flagged Eagle S and Honduras-flagged Swiftsea Rider are two of 26 elderly Russia-linked tankers with opaque ownership structures connected to three related shipmanagers, including two sanctioned by the UK government 12 months ago for “propping up Putin’s war machine”.

 

The sanctions-circumventing tankers were bought between 2022 and 2023 and placed under bareboat charter arrangements with Eiger Shipping, the shipping arm of Russia oil trader Litasco.

 

Eagle S was boarded by Finnish forces investigating sabotage of the Estlink 2 undersea cable that disrupted the supply of electricity to Estonia from Finland.

 

The tanker slowed and dragged its anchor around the cable around midday, December 25, Finland’s police said. Another three cables were also damaged.

 

The source, who declined to be identified to protect their safety, supplied at least 60 confidential documents about Eagle S to Lloyd’s List in June, including the vetting report that outlined many safety deficiencies discovered during an inspection undertaken while at anchor in Danish waters that month.

 

These documents, and others relating to dark fleet tankers providing confidential and private information about class, insurance, and flag, and other technical and regulatory requirements, were verified as genuine at the time.

 

In July, Lloyd’s List reported the serious deficiencies on Eagle S that compromised environmental and crew safety, and underscored the poor maintenance and absence of adherence to regulatory and technical standards for the wider dark fleet.

 

The source has since provided additional information, telling Lloyd’s List that an unauthorised person, who was not a seafarer, had been identified on board Eagle S.

 

They said listening and recording equipment was brought on to the 20-year-old tanker via “huge portable suitcases” along with “many laptops” that had keyboards for Turkish and Russian languages when calling at Türkiye and Russia.

 

The equipment was kept on the bridge or in the “monkey island”, they said. The monkey island is the top-most place on the ship.

 

The transmitting and receiving devices were used to record all radio frequencies, and upon reaching Russia were offloaded for analysis.

 

“They were monitoring all Nato naval ships and aircraft,” Lloyd’s List was told.

 

“They had all details on them. They were just matching their frequencies.

 

“Russians, Turkish, Indian radio officers were operating it.”

 

Eagle S also dropped “sensors-type devices” in the English Channel during a transit, they said.

 

They said no further equipment returned to the ship after it was offloaded for analysis, to their knowledge, but other devices were placed on another related tanker, Swiftsea Rider.

 

Claims that Russian-linked merchant ships are being used for spying and sabotage activities in the Baltic Sea where Russia is surrounded by Nato allies underscores the rising geopolitical tension in the region amid calls by European political leaders for increased maritime infrastructure defence.

 

The damage to the Estlink 2 cable is the second time vital undersea cables between Nato allies have been damaged in two months, and the first time a commercial ship suspected of sabotage has been taken into custody by authorities.

 

In November, China-flagged bulk carrier Yi Peng 3 (IMO: 9224984) was accused of dragging anchor to damage the C-Lion 1 communication cable connecting Finland and Germany.

 

The bulk carrier spent more than four weeks in international waters in the Danish straits as German, Sweden, Danish and Finnish officials investigated but ended up sailing last Saturday.

 

The crew on Eagle S would have been aware of its spying activities “as this could not be hidden” but were “threatened with their life, so everybody kept quiet”, the source said.

 

“They have replaced captains when they raised this issue,” they said.

 

The beneficial owners of Eagle S and Swiftsea Rider are hidden behind complex corporate structures. The registered owner of Eagle S is a single-ship structure that purports to have an office in the business centre of a luxury hotel in Dubai.

 

The shipmanager, Mumbai-based Peninsular Maritime India Private Limited cannot be contacted. One of the telephone numbers on its website did not answer. A second number hung up when asked if this was the phone number for Peninsular Maritime. Emails were not answered.

 

The company’s website claims the company be registered in England, signalling it is likely a copy-and-paste of a template, commonly found in dark fleet shipping companies.
