World Economy Summit, scheduled for April 23-25 in Washington, D.C., is being co-chaired by two top Democrat donors to the Obama and Biden administrations: Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein and former Obama Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, who most recently was appointed by then-President Joe Biden to oversee economic redevelopment in Ukraine in cooperation with BlackRock and Bank of America.

 

Jourrnalists from Semafor—a relative newcomer in the mainstream media ecosphere founded by former BuzzFeed editor Ben Smith and Bloomberg Media CEO Justin B. Smith (no known relation)—will moderate a series of discussions on topics like global finance, energy, growth and the tech revolution.

 

Several Biden Cabinet members and other prominent Democrats are included on the list of speakers, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

 

Semafor said it hoped that Trump administration officials would also attend, adding to the news value, but none had been booked yet.

 

The announcement by Semafor was met with some circumspection as many believe the annual Davos summit has become a depraved ritual for unaccountable elites to plot social-engineering strategies in support of a new world order.

 

It also comes as President Donald Trump and his team—including billionaire Elon Musk, the chair of the Department of Government Efficiency—have worked swiftly to shut down shadowy agencies like the United States Agency for International Development that have routinely engaged in bankrolling psy-op and propaganda campaigns, color revolutions and nation-building, with little public knowledge of their activities.

 

A recent bombshell revealed that Politico and other major media outlets exerting strong influence on Capitol Hill had been receiving millions of dollars in government funding before being abruptly cut off by incoming Trump officials.

 

Ben Smith was one of Politico‘s early stars, working at the upstart outlet for four years, between 2008 and 2012, before moving to BuzzFeed and, later, the New York Times.

 

Semafor said Wednesday that more than 200 CEOs have already committed to attend its April event. Although the forum is now in its third year, the surge in attendance suggested an explosion of interest due, in large part, to curiosity about Trump’s policies.

 

“It is really turning into what will be the closest thing to what Davos has accomplished in Switzerland,” said co-founder Justin B. Smith.

 

A similar Washington conference two years ago brought together about 50 CEOs, and leadership attendance expanded to about 75 in 2024. While that growth showed interest in monitoring regulatory efforts in Washington, there’s little doubt what has propelled the interest this year.

 

“Trump’s election has added fuel to the project’s acceleration and growth,” Justin B. Smith said.

 

With other finance leaders and spectators, Semafor is hoping for about 5,000 people to attend its conference. Leaders of Netflix, FedEx, Instacart, Mattel, United Airlines, Whole Foods and WeWork are among the confirmed attendees, the company said.

The UK government has issued a “technical capability notice” to Apple, compelling the tech giant to create a backdoor to its encrypted iCloud service, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The move would enable UK law enforcement and security agencies to access encrypted data stored by Apple users worldwide, according to the newspaper.

 

The UK’s Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), referred to by critics as the “Snoopers’ Charter,” grants authorities the power to mandate that tech companies permit access to users’ data for investigative purposes. It also makes it a criminal offense to reveal that the government has made such a demand. The recent notice requires Apple to provide a means for decrypting user data. It is currently protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only users can access their information.

 

Creating such backdoors could weaken overall security and set a dangerous precedent, according to Daniel Castro, vice-president of the US-based Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. In a statement on Friday, he has described the UK’s move as an “unjustified over-reach that threatens the security and privacy of individuals and businesses around the world.”

 

Last March, in a submission to the a parliamentary committee, Apple expressed concern that the IPA could be used to force companies to “break encryption by inserting backdoors into their software products.” Apple asserted that it “would never build a backdoor” and would rather withdraw “critical safety features” from the UK market affecting the security of British users’ data.

 

Ross McKenzie, a data protection partner at law firm Addleshaw Goddard, told the Guardian that the UK order could lead to a clash with the EU, potentially affecting agreements that allow the free flow of personal data between the UK and Europe.

 

UK security officials argue that encryption can hinder efforts to combat crime and terrorism. “Maintaining proportionate, lawful access to such communications in the face of ever-more prevalent encryption is sometimes our only means of detecting and understanding these threats,” Ken McCallum, head of the UK’s domestic intelligence agency MI5, stated last October. He believes that “privacy and exceptional lawful access can coexist if absolutist positions are avoided.”

 

The UK Home Office has declined to confirm or deny the existence of the notice, stating, “We do not comment on operational matters,” according to The Guardian.

 

Apple has long defended the encryption of its operating systems, notably challenging the FBI in court in 2016 over a demand for a “backdoor” to access the iPhone of a suspect in the San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack. In legal filings, Apple argued that the US government was requesting something it did not possess and that creating such a tool would be “too dangerous.”

 

The FBI eventually unlocked the phone using an Israeli spy tool, though it reportedly found nothing of value. Later revelations showed that other Israeli spyware, called Pegasus, had been used to hack tens of thousands of iPhones worldwide, targeting journalists, dissidents, and even heads of state.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday doubled down on her opposition to last summer’s presidential immunity decision and expressed concern about public confidence in the high court.

 

In her first public remarks since President Trump took office about two weeks ago, Sotomayor said she worried the Supreme Court has departed too far from public sentiment, when asked about dwindling public confidence in the court.

 

“If we as a court go so much further ahead of people, our legitimacy is going to be questioned,” Sotomayor told an audience in Kentucky on Wednesday evening.

 

“I think the immunity case is one of those situations,” she continued. “I don’t think that Americans have accepted that anyone should be above the law in America. Our equality as people was the foundation of our society and of our Constitution.”

 

“I think my court would probably gather more public support if it went a little more slowly in undoing precedent,” she said.

 

In a 6-3 vote last summer, the Supreme Court ruled former presidents enjoy absolute criminal immunity for certain core functions. Other official acts are entitled to a presumption of immunity, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority.

 

Sotomayor issued the stinging 30-page dissent, joined by fellow liberal Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, in which she wrote, “Today’s decision to grant former Presidents criminal immunity reshapes the institution of the Presidency.”

 

“It makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law,” she continued in the dissent.

 

She reiterated her position at the event Wednesday night.

 

“Our Constitution itself has provisions not exempting the president from criminal activity after an impeachment,” Sotomayor said. “So, I had a hard time with the immunity case. And if we continue going in directions that the public is going to find hard to understand, we’re placing the court at risk.”

 

Sotomayor said Wednesday she worried that frequent court reversals of long-established legal precedent “creates instability” and contributes to the public questioning “of whether we’re doing things because of legal analysis or because of partisan views.”

 

Sotomayor stressed that she does not accuse her “colleagues of being partisan” and trusts they “genuinely have a belief in a certain way of looking at the Constitution.”

 

“And I understand, in good faith, that they think that that belief better promotes our democracy,” Sotomayor continued. “But whether that’s true or not is irrelevant if people are feeling insecure in the changes that they’re instituting at a pace that they can’t absorb.”

On National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a date meant to celebrate female athletes and their achievements, President Donald Trump marked the occasion with the most significant move to protect girls’ and women’s sports since the passage of Title IX in 1972: he signed the “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order.

 

His executive order aims to preserve fairness in women’s athletics by ensuring that only biological females participate in female sports competitions. For those concerned about the erosion of equal opportunities for women in athletics, this order represents a much-needed course correction.

 

The order takes a firm stand, mandating that federal funds will be revoked from educational programs that allow biological males to compete in women's sports. This comes in response to long-standing concerns over the safety, fairness, and privacy of female athletes.

 

In the wake of the executive order, NCAA President Charlie Baker called the move a “clear, national standard.” The NCAA inevitably revised its rules and limited participation in women’s sports to female athletes.

 

The new NCAA policy represents a significant move toward consistency and fairness. While the NCAA ultimately caved, California leftists have decided to resist.

"One day, the CIF board will look back and realize they chose to be on the wrong side of history,” Lorey added. “They will have to answer for why they sacrificed the safety, fairness, and dignity of young girls to bow to an ideological agenda. Polling continues to show that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose letting males who identify as transgender compete in girls' sports, and Trump’s order reflects these sentiments. As California moves forward in defiance, it risks serious consequences, including the loss of federal funding for violating Title IX.

 

Is this really the hill California leftists want to die on? As Colombia, Mexico, and Canada have recently learned the hard way, taking on Donald Trump comes with swift and unmistakable consequences. If you choose to “eff around” with Trump, you’re bound to “find out” just how wrong you were to underestimate him — sooner rather than later.

 

Californians are already fed up with their political leadership because of the incompetence surrounding the wildfire response, and it’s doubtful that Gavin Newsom or his Democrat allies have nearly as much political capital as they think to pull off this stunt.

PANIC: California Democrats Move Toward Secession

 

Days after the American nation secured a landslide victory for Donald J. Trump as the 47th U.S. President, some Democrat-led states voiced their plans to oppose any order of the new Oval Office. The governors of California, Colorado, and Illinois expressed their commitment to progressive ideas implemented by the Biden-Harris administration.

 

The Golden State considered mere disobedience not enough. In January 2025, California state secretary Shirley Weber allowed the Calexit initiative to be put on the November 2028 ballot. For some reason, left-wing activists backing the secession movement falsely believe that withdrawing from the Union would create a prosperous independent nation, free from what they might call “conservative dictatorship” of the Republican-led U.S.

 

A quick overview of California in early 2025 reveals challenges facing the state. Residents grapple with economic issues, illegal migration, a surge in crime rates, a high cost of living, and an affordable housing crisis. The political climate is also tense, as the shift of power has become a rare occasion.

 

The Golden State has been a Democrat stronghold for years. Surprisingly, the party fighting for diversity and representation has had a majority in the California State Assembly continuously since 1996, and occupied the governor’s office since 2011. In total, Democrats have been dominating the Golden State for almost 14 years at the gubernatorial level and 29 years at the legislature.

 

Just like the Biden-Harris administration failed to deliver on the federal level, 14 years of Democrat governors failed Californians. Here, many things are interconnected and dependent on each other. First of all, the population of the state grew by approximately 2.1 million, reaching 39.4 million in total by 2024. Given the plummeting birth rates from 64.7 births per 1,000 women in 2010 to 52.8 births in 2024, migration, both legal and illegal, could be the only source of such a rapid population growth. This assertion is backed by data on crimes. The violent crime rate hit highs of 503 per 100,000 residents in 2023 from the lows of 391 in 2014.

US musician and fashion designer Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, found himself at the center of a new major scandal on Friday, after he made dozens of offensive posts on X.

 

In a series of now-deleted all-caps posts, the rapper declared himself “a Nazi” and professed his “love” for Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler, insisting that “racist stereo types [sic] exist for a reason and they all be true.” The offensive posts largely targeted the Jewish community and contained assorted anti-Semitic claims.

 

“Some of my best friends are Jewish and I don’t trust any of them,” Ye revealed in one of the posts. The rapper also pledged to buy “two Maybachs tomorrow” and “make the Jewish person who’s selling it to me read all these tweet [sic].”

 

“And I bet you see me whipping Maybachs,” he added.

 

The rapper also claimed that “all white people are racist,” alleging that “Jewish people actually hate white people and use black people.” Ye also appeared to stand by his previous hateful remarks, stating he would never apologize for them and suggesting that Jews should apologize to him instead.

 

“I’m never apologizing for my Jewish comments. I can say whatever the fck I wanna say forever. Where’s my fcking apology for freezing my accounts,” he stated.

 

Ye also gave a shoutout of sorts to X owner Elon Musk, claiming that every post he produced “promotes Elon’s platform.” He made reference to a controversy connected with US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, when the billionaire made questionable gestures perceived by some as a Nazi salute. Musk dismissed such allegations as “dirty tricks” and “pure propaganda.”

 

“Elon stole my Nazi Swag at the inauguration,” the rapper wrote.

 

The outburst prompted a storm of criticism from various rights groups and Jewish organizations that condemned the musician over his anti-Semitism. “Once again, Kanye West has spewed vile antisemitism, glorifying Hitler and spreading Nazi propaganda on his social media platforms in a desperate bid for attention,” Jewish Future Promise president Hadara Ishak wrote, branding the remarks not only “offensive” but “dangerous” as well.

 

Shortly after the rapper produced his explosive X thread, Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy announced he was ending his collaboration with Ye’s fashion brand. It was not immediately clear whether the designer’s move was linked to the outburst.

“I’m deeply grateful to Ye and the entire YEEZY team for a memorable experience – one that will always stay with me,” Rubchinsky wrote on Instagram.

 

Ye is notorious for publicly expressing anti-Semitic views and has gone on hate tweeting binges before. A major outburst occurred in late 2022, when the rapper also professed his love for Hitler and declared himself a Nazi. At the time, the posts yielded the rapper a ban on X, while several major companies ended their collaborations with him.

 

The rapper produced an apology in Hebrew for his behavior about a year after the 2022 X scandal, only to face more criticism from rights groups that questioned his motives and choice of language.

 

Ye, a 24-time Grammy Award winner, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 and has spoken about his struggle with mental health. Earlier this week, he revealed he had also been diagnosed with autism.

Many controversial bills such as Proposition 47, which decriminalized thefts under $950, led to a surge in shop-lifting as it was reclassified from a felony to a misdemeanor. Together with that, strict gun control measures have made it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves. An overwhelming decline became obvious when businesses began relocating from the Golden State to Texas with more affordable living and less regulation. Add this to the devastating January 2025 wildfires that inflicted heavy damage to Californians’ property because the Democrat government underfunded firefighters and ordered them to make completely unnecessary donations of crucial equipment to Ukraine.

 

To sum up, the current situation is far from great. The state’s economy is in trouble, families don’t want to have children, and population growth comes from migrants (illegal in most cases). Why do these left-wing progressive activists expect secession to solve California’s problems?

 

The current Calexit is nothing new. Progressive activists have long been dreaming of secession. But there is also the other side. Ordinary people, proud Americans who reside in towns and rural areas, have also expressed their dissatisfaction with what the Democrats made of their once beloved state. One of those individuals, fed up with woke policies, Mexican cartels, and a dying economy, is former California Assemblyman Tim Donnelly. Back in 2018, Donnelly and a group of conservative activists launched a political movement to create a new state, the Great State of New California.

 

The initiative is based on the West Virginia separation precedent. It implies the division of the existing California into two parts, New California, and the remaining California. Advocates say the move would result in a better public safety, representation for both city and rural residents, and ease the burden of Democrat-imposed DEI policies. These people emphasize the importance of remaining within the U.S., because they love America and don’t want to part ways with it.

 

The conservative movement has done a great job for the last seven years. They established a bicameral legislative body, passed laws and even elected the governor. But their voices were silenced and nobody allowed them to be put on the ballot, unlike Calexit. Now, with the Republicans in charge and weakened Democrats, the people of California who feel pressed and underrepresented because of the Democrat party dominance, have a chance for a change.

 

On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, Robert Paul Preston, the Governor pro tempore of the Great State of New California, appealed to the president to assist Californians with all its issues, and there are hopes and strong expectations that the Oval Office will respond positively.

 

Even though the majority of Americans voted Republican November 2024, which ultimately means against the Democrat party for many reasons, some blue-dominated states remain in strong opposition to the mandate given to Donald J. Trump. The California government is in a rush to maintain the status quo, even to the point of encouraging secession initiatives like Calexit. Apparently, West Coast progressives are just that keen on keeping their crime, inflation, and dysfunction.

Around 100 women were kept as slaves on a human egg farm in Georgia where they were fed hormones and treated like cattle.

Their horrifying ordeal has been revealed by three Thai women who were freed from the clutches of the 'egg mafia' on January 30 after being exploited for half a year, tabloid Bild reports.

The woman said they were held captive on a 'human farm' in the eastern European country of Georgia by a criminal organisation led by Chinese criminals, who sold their eggs on the black market.

They were lured in by a job offer on Facebook, promising them a salary between 11,500 and 17,000 euros (£9,600 to £14,100) to work as surrogates for Georgian couples who could not have children.

The trio travelled to Georgia in August 2024 alongside ten other Thai women.

Their expenses for the journey as well as their passport applications were paid for by the organisation, with a female employee organising their travel.

But once they arrived, they were housed in four large properties with around a hundred other women and realised the job offer was just a front.

Instead, the women were pumped up with hormones to stimulate their ovaries and were forced to have their eggs removed once a month, one of the freed women told a press conference this week.

She said they were treated like cattle and that some of the women did not even receive any compensation for their eggs.

If they asked their captors to leave, they were told they had to fork out 2000 euros (£1,670) for the farm owners first.

One former slave who worked on the egg cell farm bought her freedom and alerted Pavena Hongsakula, founder of a Thai foundation for children and women.

The woman told Ms Pavena that several other Thai women were still held as slaves at the farm as they could not afford to pay for their release.

The eggs collected from the women are understood to have been sold, trafficked in other countries for use in in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), Ms Pavena said at this week's press conference, according to the Bangkok Post.

The Pavena foundation collaborated with Interpol and managed to free the three Thai women released on January 30 after paying the ransom.

It is not known how many women are still being held on the 'human farm'.

Thai authorities and Interpol have launched an investigation, with police in Thailand saying that there could be other rescues as the case progresses.

An incredible website database has outed NEO Philanthropy’s actual duties, and those of thousands of other similar groups. NEO, it turns out, is nothing more than a middleman. It receives money and funnels some of it to Everytown for Gun Safety as well as other leftwing, anti-gun groups.

 

The website database is called DataRepublican.com, and it will forever change the way nonprofits handle their funding, especially those on the left.

“Have you ever wondered where the money goes? Billions of dollars are spent on government grants, charities, and other organizations every year,” the DataRepublican.com website states. “We’re connecting the dots between government grants, charities, and drawing connections to expose where the money flows.”

 

The site has already garnered high praise.

 

“Worth following @datarepublican,” said Elon Musk.

 

“Love your insights! You’re a must follow on this platform,” said Charlie Kirk.

 

It has already proven incredibly useful. On Wednesday, pro-gun official Hannah Hill “exposed taxpayer money flowing to Bloomberg gun control orgs.”

 

The next day, she used the website to link USAID funds that went to Everytown, Giffords and more gun-control organizations.

Lord Peter Mandelson, the far-left anti-Trump new UK ambassador to Washington D.C., imploded in an expletive-laden meltdown when a reporter asked him about his “close” ties to child trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

 

Mandelson, a member of the UK’s ruling socialist Labour Party and member of Britain’s House of Lords, is known to have had a “close relationship” with Epstein, a convicted pedophile who was found dead in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

 

His friendship with Epstein was exposed in court documents that were made public.

 

However, Mandelson continues to deny the relationship, claiming they were only brief acquaintances, despite photos emerging showing the two men had a long-held close friendship.

 

On Thursday, Mandelson reportedly imploded with rage and told an interviewer from the Financial Times to “f**k off” after being questioned about his ties to Epstein.

 

Mandelson reportedly met the pedophile after being introduced through Epstein’s former lover and convicted sex trafficking accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.

 

“I regret ever meeting him or being introduced to him by his partner Ghislaine Maxwell,” he told the outlet as he appeared to return to the script during a conversation aboard a high-speed train in the UK.

 

“I regret even more the hurt he caused to many young women.”

 

The reporter questioned Epstein’s relationship with Mandelson.

 

Court documents revealed that a 2019 internal document from JPMorgan noted a “particularly close relationship” between Epstein, Prince Andrew, and Mandelson.

 

Mandelson was described as “a senior member of the British government.”

 

The missive became public after it was filed in federal court in New York years later.

 

As reports began to emerge about the train encounter, a British embassy spokesperson issued a statement repeating the new ambassador’s remarks about Epstein and his behavior.

 

“As Lord Mandelson has said in response to questions about Epstein, he regrets ever meeting him or being introduced to him,” the spokesperson said.

 

“He regrets even more the hurt he caused to many young women.”

 

Prince Andrew was named in a document dump last year as an associate of Epstein’s as part of a civil lawsuit from Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

 

Giuffre accused the British royal of raping her at Maxwell’s London townhouse when she was underage.

 

She claims the prince also raped her on two other occasions while she was just 17 years old.

 

He has denied her allegations, but he paid her an undisclosed settlement in 2022.

 

Andrew has been relieved of his royal duties as part of the fallout over her claims.

 

While Epstein died facing allegations he operated an international sex-trafficking ring, his accomplices and clients remain unknown outside of Maxwell.

Another common sense order. I have used the same two or three plastic straws for 10-20 years. Plastic is easy to wash right after use. Even plastic cups last for decades vs paper cups. Bring back plastic bags at grocery stores. We use plastic for kitchen garbage bags and leaves, and shopping bags are used for smaller buckets. Half of our food is wrapped in plastic too, so the ban on plastic bags is just any opportunity to scam us, for example, I just paid $10 for plastic kitchen garbage bags that should only cost about $1 because plastic is dirt cheap to make and mold. Why not concentrate on making a bio-degradable plastic if anything at all. Something with a shorter life span for certain uses.

A high school teacher who allegedly identifies as a cat has been accused of 'hissing' at students and licking the back of their hands in class.

 

The bizarre classroom behaviour was witnessed by students at Marsden State High School in Waterford West in Queensland.

 

The teacher is seen wearing a black and white cat ear headband in class and at school assembly in photos first obtained by the Courier Mail.

 

Students allege the teacher asked to be referred to as 'Miss Purr' and wears a lanyard with the word 'purr' on it.

 

A relative of one student claimed the teacher had hissed at them after they failed to answer a question or pay attention in class.

 

'(The teacher) sits in class and licks her hands,' the relative said.

 

'It's absolutely disgusting.

 

'Something needs to be done about this.'

 

Another parent said they wanted their child to have teachers they can 'look up to' which 'isn't someone who wears ears'.

 

One mum alleged the teacher made her daughter 'purr' for a lolly.

 

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the behaviour 'wasn't acceptable in Queensland state schools'.

 

'The school is aware of parents' concerns and the principal has addressed the issue directly with the teacher,' a statement read.

 

'Teachers are held to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.'

The British journalist said he was accused by Austrian agents of encouraging terrorism, disseminating propaganda and being involved in organized crime, reports Joe Lauria.

 

British independent journalist Richard Medhurst said Thursday he was detained this week by Austrian police and intelligence agents and accused of being a member of Hamas.

 

Medhurst, who lives in Austria and is a fierce critic of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, said police raided his home on Monday, took his devices and interrogated him. “They essentially lured me into a trap,” he said on a video posted on X.

NOW: Crews are searching for a missing plane in Alaska carrying 10 people. The Nome Fire department, National Guard and Coast Guard are currently responding to reports of a missing Bering Air caravan. According to reports the plane was 12 miles offshore transiting from Unalakleet to Nome when its position was lost, according to the USCG. The Nome Volunteer fire department released a statement saying:

" We do not have any updated information on the location of the missing aircraft. Crews are still searching on the ground, canvassing as much area as possible. The National Guard C-130 reported they found nothing found so far. The Airforce also sent a C-130 resumed the search and also have reported no visuals, and have one hour of flight search time remaining. If nothing further is reported, the next update will be at 9am."

Authorities in Alaska are searching for a commercial passenger plane that went missing in freezing, windy conditions over the Bering Sea, the third major U.S. aviation incident in the past 10 days.

The single-engine plane operated by regional carrier Bering Air had nine passengers and a pilot on board when its position was lost at around 3:20 p.m. local time Thursday, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

The Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force and National Guard were involved in an air and land search for the plane, which was roughly 12 miles offshore when its position was lost, authorities said.

The incident comes just over a week after 67 people were killed in a midair collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a Black Hawk army helicopter in Washington, D.C. Two days later, seven people died when a medical transport jet crashed in a fiery explosion near a mall in northeast Philadelphia.

The missing plane was traveling from the city of Unalakleet to Nome, across the Norton Sound, an inlet of the Bering Sea on the western coast of Alaska. The flight usually takes less than an hour.

The plane departed Unalakleet, a small fishing village with a population of around 800 people, on schedule at 2:38 p.m. local time, according to flight data. After making its way west across the Norton Sound, the pilot told air-traffic controllers in Anchorage that he intended to enter a holding pattern while they waited for the runway at Nome to be cleared.

The temperature in the Nome area was around 9 degrees at the time with light snow, gusty winds and limited visibility, according to the National Weather Service.

Shortly after that call flight data shows the plane’s altitude drop before its position was lost just offshore.

The Nome Police Department had asked residents with boats to assist the search but later said it had received enough offers of help. The local fire department said weather conditions and visibility in the region were poor and warned residents against forming their own search parties.

Bering Air operates 39 aircraft, all small passenger and cargo planes and helicopters. The Nome-based carrier operates scheduled passenger and cargo flights seven days a week to 32 communities along the northwest coast of Alaska, according to the company website. The company didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was monitoring the situation.

Sparsely-populated Alaska is more dependent on air travel than any other part of the U.S., with 82% of communities accessible only by air, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Many of the aircraft in the state are smaller, often single engine planes without sophisticated weather or deicing systems, according to a 2021 report by the FAA into Alaskan aviation safety. There is also a lack of aviation infrastructure in the state, which, coupled with challenging terrain and extreme weather, can make flying in Alaska more dangerous than other places, the report said.
