Trump Orders Shut Down of Key NATO Base in Greece

 

Reports are coming in claiming President Donald Trump has ordered the shutdown of a large U.S. Military Base in Greece. The base is presently a key Logistics point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine situation. NATO has been using this base to ship weapons for Ukraine.

 

Greek media reports that the closure of the U.S. military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, follows a joint request from Putin and Erdogan.

 

The base, a key NATO logistical hub, had been a point of contention, particularly with Turkey.

 

If these reports are confirmed, the move represents a diplomatic concession that could alter the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

 

Greek press reports highlight that the closure is seen as a strategic loss for Greece, which has strengthened military ties with the U.S. in recent years. The Alexandroupoli base played a role in regional security and military logistics, particularly in supporting NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.

 

The Trump administration has yet to officially comment on the reports, and it remains unclear whether the decision will be permanent or part of a broader realignment of U.S. military assets.

France President Arrives at White House: No Trump Greeting

 

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the White House at about 9:00 AM local time and already got the heads-up about his visit: No President Trump outside to greet him.

 

The Trump White House is very clear about who is welcome and who will merely be received. When a visitor is welcome, Trump is seen waiting outside the White House portal to greet the visitor as they exit their car. When a visitor is merely being tolerated, President Trump is NOT outside; just a staffer or two greets such a visitor.

 

Macron got the Staffer this morning.

 

It is already widely known that Macron wants the US to continue the Ukraine war with Russia. His words will likely fall upon deaf ears.

 

President Trump campaigned on stopping that war, and is now actively taking steps to achieve precisely that. The notion that, of all people the French President, can come to the White House to change US direction is almost laughable.

 

After it became public in 2022 that then-French President Francois Hollande attended the Minsk Conference in Belarus, with the deliberate intent to deceive Russia in order to buy time for Ukraine to arm for war, Trump knows the French government under Macron absolutely cannot be trusted.

 

They were willing to intentionally deceive the leader of one super power, Russia. It therefore follows they are also likely willing to deceive the leader of another super power, the USA. Trump will likely have none of that.

Initial focus was on isolating the unhealthy (e.g. neuroweapon damage) attack channels/vectors/methods, which took a lot longer than I thought due to the sheer number of attack vectors in the local environment around me and then my brain had been cognitively damaged and degraded, so I was not at optimum “thinking” performance levels at the time of this work in 2022-2023. Attack methods and vectors for neuroweapon platform used against me, CTO of a deep tech and hard science firm Reactwell

 

Initial dosing of my body with non-invasive brain-machine-interface niBMI mesogens “seeds” comprised of nemetic crystals, nanotechnology (self-replicating), graphenes and quantum dots. The basic way this tech works is that the “seed” mesogen is scanned in with a bunch of others at some facility and linked to a computer system. Then the “seeds” are dispersed in products or selective delivery payloads for “whaling” (cybersecurity term applied to neurosecurity) and then the seeds are delivered. In 2019-2021 had my vehicle broken into several times, perhaps one vector, but many others. The “seed” then grows within the body and links into central nervous system (electricity loving) and brain, eyes, ears, arms, legs, stomach, then you’re fully connected to the AI BCPS system that the “seed” was programmed to link you to. The issue is now there are other “seeds” that other groups have besides NATO, such as ChinaCCP Coalition that can cause someone to “glitch-out” by having one “seed” node execute ABC comand and another “seed” node execute CAB command and the person with the seeds in them “glitches out”. Remember: we are the times (age) of unrestricted warfare. I had one weird glitch out like this in 2022 after the initial neuroweapon key signal attack, where the synbio tried to relink into my body full, but was able to decouple it with rapid use of chelators such as calcium-disodium-EDTA and garlic. Ukraine conflict was ‘provoked’ – Trump adviser

 

The US promise of NATO membership for Kiev triggered the hostilities, Steve Witkoff has said

The Ukraine conflict was “provoked” and it is wrong to solely blame Russia, Steve Witkoff, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, has said. Moscow had to respond to a security threat created by the West’s promises to accept Ukraine into NATO, he stated.

 

Witkoff made the remarks in an interview published by CNN on Tuesday, in which he was asked whether Washington was choosing the right side by holding talks with Moscow instead of continuing to funnel aid to Kiev.

 

The situation is not black-and-white, with Russians being “the bad guys,” Witkoff told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

 

“The war didn’t need to happen, it was provoked,” he added. “It doesn’t necessarily mean it was provoked by the Russians.”

 

According to Witkoff, “there were all kinds of conversations… about Ukraine joining NATO”prior to the conflict that were treated by Moscow as a direct threat to its security and prompted it to respond.

 

The US official also spoke about Russia’s readiness to swiftly end the conflict through negotiations, pointing to the talks held in Istanbul in the spring of 2022, shortly after Moscow began its military campaign.

 

The peace process came to an abrupt end in May of that year when Kiev withdrew from the talks after then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged it to continue fighting.

Russian officials “have indicated that they are responsive” to ending the conflict by engaging in “cogent and substantive negotiations” in Istanbul, Witkoff said, adding that the two sides “came very, very close to signing something.”

 

The Türkiye-facilitated Russian-Ukrainian peace talks in 2022 resulted in a preliminary agreement for a treaty that would have seen Ukraine become a neutral nation with a limited military, backed by security guarantees from major world powers, including Russia.

 

According to Witkoff, the preliminary Istanbul agreement could be used by Washington as a framework and a “guidepost” for a future peace deal.

 

Last week, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky described the Istanbul talks as “an important reference point and the platform where the parties came closest to an agreement.” He also named Türkiye an “ideal host” for potential negotiations between Kiev, Moscow, and Washington.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly referred to the Istanbul agreements as a potential basis for any future peace deal with Kiev.

Terrorist Attack Rocks Russian Consulate In France On 3-Year Ukraine War Mark

 

A suspected terror attack has taken place against the Russian consulate in the French city of Marseille on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has confirmed, after explosions erupted inside the consulate's walls. Three explosive devices were thrown onto the grounds of the consulate which detonated, resulting in damage but no casualties. The diplomatic compound has subsequently been sealed off by police pending an investigation.

 

The attack corresponded to the three-year anniversary of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian Army poured across the borders from Russia and staging grounds in Belarus on February 24, 2022, to prevent NATO from taking over their borders alongside Ukraine.

 

"The explosions on the territory of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille have all the signs of a terrorist attack," foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing.

 

"We demand that the host country undertake exhaustive and speedy investigative measures, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russia's foreign missions," she said. This isn't the first time explosives have been 'randomly' hurled at Russian diplomatic compounds in Europe, but this one clearly planned and timed to mark the day of Feb.24.

 

A second device, which was also thrown against the consulate's outer wall, did not explode and fell to the sidewalk. A bomb disposal expert was called to the scene.

 

The suspect fled and an investigation has been launched, an official said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named by national police policy. Authorities did not provide details on the suspect or a motive.

 

For its part the French government has "condemned any attack on the security of diplomatic compounds. The inviolability, protection and integrity of diplomatic and consular premises, as well as their personnel, are fundamental principles of international law" in a statement.

 

Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large Rodion Miroshnik has highlighted that the constant anti-Russia rhetoric coming out of European and French leadership helped set the stage for Monday's consulate bombing.

 

After repeating that it has "all the signs of a terrorist act" - Miroshnik leveled the charge: "It seems that the hostile rhetoric of the French leadership is not just hot air, but also contributes to terrorist acts on French territory," he wrote on Telegram.

A total lunar eclipse will occur on March 13-14, 2025 — the first on Earth since 2022 — but only the night side of the planet will get to see it.

During this global event, which will occur at the same time across the world, the lunar surface will turn reddish for 65 minutes — a phenomenon often dubbed a "blood moon."

 

Although the point of greatest eclipse will be in the Pacific Ocean, North America and South America will get the best views.

Some areas of Europe will get a slight view of the moonset, and East Asia will glimpse the spectacle at moonrise.

This one occurs between 11:57 p.m. and 6 a.m. EDT (03:57 and 10:00 UTC) — a total of six hours — though arguably the most interesting part, totality, happens between 2:26 and 03:31 a.m. EDT (06:26 and 07:31 UTC).

 

The total lunar eclipse on March 13-14, 2025, will last just over six hours, beginning with a penumbral eclipse — when the moon enters Earth's fuzzy outer shadow and loses brightness — from 11:57 p.m. to 1:09 a.m. EDT (03:57 to 05:09 UTC).

There will then be a partial phase — when the moon begins to enter Earth's darker umbral shadow and starts to turn red — from 1:09 a.m. to 2:26 a.m. (05:09 to 06:26 UTC).

Totality — when the whole moon is within Earth's umbra — will last 65 minutes, from 2:26 a.m. to 3:31 a.m. EDT (06:26 to 07:31 UTC).

Lester Holt, the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” for a decade, announced Monday that he is stepping down from the long-running broadcast at the beginning of the summer.

 

Holt will continue to be a fixture at the network with a full-time role at “Dateline,” where he has been the principal anchor for almost 15 years, according to a memo shared with network staff Monday.

 

NBC News did not immediately name Holt’s successor.

 

Holt was named anchor of “Nightly News” in June 2015 after steering weekend editions of the news broadcast for eight years and co-anchoring “Weekend TODAY” for 12 years. He has served as principal anchor of “Dateline” since September 2011.

 

“A smile comes to my face when I think that with Nightly News, and Dateline, I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history,” Holt wrote in a note Monday to “Nightly” and “Dateline” staffers. “As a 20-year-old radio reporter on the police beat chasing breaking news around San Francisco, I could never have imagined my career path would unfold in the way it has. EU blacklists Russian comedian

 

The 16th package of Ukraine-related sanctions also targets an actor, a chess grandmaster, a TV presenter and an Olympic gymnast

 

Russian comedian Mikhail Galustyan was added to the EU sanctions list on Monday. The bloc’s 16th round of Russia sanctions is timed to mark the third anniversary of the escalation of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

 

The updated blacklist has added 48 individuals and 35 entities seen by Brussels as responsible for “undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”

 

A 46-year old producer and TV presenter, Galustyan has starred in dozens of comedies and TV shows and also campaigned for Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 2012 and 2018 elections.

 

Brussels has accused Galustyan for the “militarization of Russian youth,” citing the actor’s role as head of the Federation of Military and Tactical Games and membership of the “Yunarmiya” patriotic military movement.

 

The EU blacklist also includes other well-known Russians, such as TV presenter Julia Baranovskaya, blogger and a media manager Kristina Potupchik, chess grandmaster Sergey Karjakin, and Olympic champion gymnast Nikita Nagorny.

 

Other sanctioned individuals include senator from the Astrakhan region, Andrey Derkach, CEO of state-run arm producer Almaz-Antey, Yan Novikov, shareholder of the Ural Mining, Igor Kudryashkin, CEO of the machinery-building holding ‘Stan’ Boris Bogatyrev.

 

The latest sanctions include a“phased-in” ban on EU nations importing primary aluminum from Russia. They also target 13 more banks and 73 more vessels involved in shipping Russian crude oil and revoke the broadcasting licenses of eight Russian media outlets.

 

Last month, EU members extended the existing sanctions on Russia for another six months. The restrictions already target a wide range of sectors and include trade embargoes, travel bans, and individual sanctions against Russian businessmen and public figures.

 

Moscow has denounced Western restrictions as illegal and thatthey have failed to destabilize the Russian economyor isolate it from the global financial system.

 

Commenting on the news, Galustyan told RIA Novosti that EU blacklisting came as a complete surprise to him.“Apparently, European politicians have run out of arguments if they have started persecuting and sanctioning actorsand cultural figures, comedians, and satirists who bring joy and smiles to people,” he said.

US Federal Air Marshals Complete First Drone Pilot Training

The United States Transportation Security Administration has certified 18 Federal Air Marshals to operate the agency’s Skydio X10 drones.

Held over three days at the decommissioned Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, the course aimed to improve the way the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) assesses airport security vulnerabilities.

 

The newly certified pilots will now support airport perimeter assessments, critical infrastructure vulnerability analysis, and UAS response exercises, areas that previously relied on tabletop exercises alone.

“This inaugural sUAS pilot certification training is a game changer for Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (LE/FAMS) and TSA,” said Serge Potapov, Executive Director of the LE/FAMS Flight Programs Branch.

“By integrating cutting-edge drone technology into our law enforcement tool kit, we are enhancing our ability to safeguard transportation security with greater reach, precision and efficiency.”

 

The training is part of TSA’s broader strategy to address increasing drone activity around US airports. Since 2021, the agency has recorded over 2,000 drone sightings near airports, with several incidents requiring pilots to take evasive action.

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has called for modifications to statutory authorities, urging better coordination on drone detection and counter-drone operations to mitigate these risks.

 

LE/FAMS partnered with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD) for the training, leveraging the stadium’s open terrain and favourable climate.

The collaboration allows TSA to conduct its certification programmes at no cost while benefiting from LVMPD’s expertise in drone operations.

“This course gives our FAMs the ability to proactively assess threats and enhance security operations,” said Assistant Supervisory Air Marshal in Charge Ty Fletcher.

“We can now conduct real-time airport security assessments rather than relying solely on theoretical exercises.”

 

TSA has scheduled another certification event next month for Midwest field offices, with plans to extend training to the East Coast this summer.

A century-old Zionist group is being rebooted — and wants Jews to ‘fight back’ on the street

(JTA) — The video appeared on Instagram in October. A man, in the dark of night, is spray-painting over a mural in New Orleans depicting a large pair of eyes with the Palestinian flag incorporated into their pupils, paired with text reading “All Eyes on Gaza.”

 

“What are you doing, defacing our local art here?” the person recording the video asks.

 

“It’s antisemitism,” the man, Jakob Schanzer, responds. He returns to spraying black paint over the mural as the two exchange testy words.

 

“Jews fight back. Get used to it,” Schanzer adds. “Happy Rosh Hashanah.”

 

The video put Schanzer, a doctoral student at Tulane University, on a virtual hit list for the city’s vibrant street art community — even more so once the mural’s original artist, who goes by Hugo Gyrl and has Jewish heritage, touched up the piece with the phrase “Jews For Peace.”

 

Schanzer went to a social media acquaintance for help navigating his newfound virality, who recommended he get in touch with someone. Within an hour, he recalled to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, “I was on the phone with Ronn.”

 

“Ronn” was Ronn Torossian, an infamously hard-charging public relations executive who had recently devoted considerable resources to relaunching a century-old Jewish group called Betar. Like the Anti-Defamation League and many other Jewish organizations after Oct. 7, 2023, Betar wanted to fight antisemitism — but not with statements or lawsuits. Instead Torossian, a devotee of the early-20th century Revisionist Zionist thinker Ze’ev Jabotinsky who preached the power of Jewish self-defense and founded the original Betar movement in a pre-state Israel, wanted to fight fire with fire.

 

Soon, instead of running from the video, Schanzer was embracing it — by putting it on social media himself, this time with Betar branding. He also added his own explanation for his behavior, declaring that the phrase “All Eyes on Gaza” was, in his mind, just as bad as other pro-Palestinian rallying cries more widely believed to be antisemitic, like “Globalize the Intifada.” He added that this mural in particular was “calling for violence against Jews,” declaring, “As a strong, gay Jew, I will not cower in fear.”

 

It could be a mission statement for the new Betar, which, Torossian told JTA, “stands for tough, strong, proud Zionism.” The group claims to currently have “thousands” of members across more than 50 cities, and its aggressive posturing is dovetailing with an increasingly combative American Jewish right, angered by post-Oct. 7 protests and newlyemboldened by President Donald Trump’sreturn to office. On social media Betar recruits “Bear Jews,” named after the character in the Quentin Tarantino movie “Inglourious Basterds” who beats Nazis with a baseball bat.

 

“Many of us believe that we are living in the days before a potential Holocaust,” Torossian told JTA. “So we think that it’s OK to stand up to antisemites, and not only is it OK, but we’re going to do it differently than the ADL. The ADL writes position papers. Hillel writes position papers. How are those position papers working out for us?”

 

Over the last several months, Betar has steadily built an army of pro-Israel agitators who respond to pro-Palestinian protesters with a mix of online trolling, counter-demonstrations and direct physical threats. Its archnemesis, the group’s former executive director told JTA, is the national campus group Students for Justice in Palestine. But in practice the group tends to view anyone organizing for Palestinians — or any authority figures who Betar says aren’t doing enough to stop the marching, or any Jew advocating for a more moderate stance on Israel — as a potential antisemitic threat and, therefore, target for response.

Any given day on Betar’s active social media accounts, one might find a photo of a brass-knuckle menorah; jokes mocking efforts to address Islamophobia; praise for followers who disrupted a recent New York vigil for Hind Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza by Israeli troops a year ago; musings about ripping the kippah off the head of a Jew participating in a pro-Palestinian protest; a Photoshopped baseball bat directed at the mouth of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg; and attacks on Jews from Chuck Schumer to George Soros (“Kapo of the week”) to comedian Adam Sandler. (“Shame on you, Adam Sandler,” Betar tweeted recently, falsely claiming he “hasn’t said a word about antisemitism or the Jews.”)

 

Now, the Trump administration is embracing policies and ideas that align with Betar. On Jan. 29 the president signed an executive order intended to counter campus antisemitism, the most eye-catching part of which suggested that foreign-born protesters who are deemed to have supported terrorist groups like Hamas could be deported.

 

It was a policy that, to borrow Torossian’s phrase, could have come straight from a Betar position paper. For months the group has openly gathered dossiers on what it claims are students who match that exact profile, with the stated intent of submitting them to the Trump administration for deportation.

 

Betar US doesn’t just view pro-Palestinian protesters as the enemy; it also goes after other Jews, even strongly pro-Israel ones.

 

Columbia University professor Shai Davidai knows this firsthand. Last weekend, Davidai organized a pro-Israel counter-protest to a “teach-in” about the first intifada being planned by a coalition of pro-Palestinian Columbia groups, some of which had explicitly advocated for violence against “Zionists” in the recent past.

Together with influencer Lizzy Savetsky and the group End Jew Hatred, Davidai told JTA, the counter-protest had around 100 people turn up — including around seven Betar supporters.

 

Despite their tiny size, the Betar contingent immediately worried Davidai. Most of them were young men, he recalled; several covered their faces; one had a flag of the Jewish Defense League, an extremist group that the United States has designated as a terrorist organization. “All they did was scream ‘F— Gaza,’ ‘Gaza is ours,’ ‘Here’s a beeper for you,’ ‘Deport them all,’ ‘ICE, ICE, ICE,’” he said. “Just violent rhetoric.”

 

Davidai is no stranger to provocation: Last fall, Columbia barred him from campus after months of his vocal criticisms of the university’s handling of antisemitism. Yet he views Betar as a serious obstacle to the movement he was trying to build, not least because they were adapting the same tactics as the pro-Palestinian side: expressing support for a terror group and hiding their faces as they did so.

 

“I think it’s hypocritical to spend 16 months blaming all protesters who are in this Free Palestine movement for not policing their own protesters, but then let hatred and violence take root in yours,” Davidai said. “I said, ‘Look, you’re doing exactly what we’re telling them not to do….’ At some point I asked them, ‘Go do your thing, but don’t be associated with us.’ They refused.” (Torossian disputes Davidai’s account of the weekend’s protests, saying that Betar had organized independently of the professor’s group, and that Betar’s own numbers were closer to 50.)

 

After the rally, Betar and its followers began targeting him online. On Instagram he blasted them for only joining counter-protests, while never showing up to rallies for Israeli hostages. The rhetoric has only escalated from there, as Betar has mobilized its followers against him, in public and private. “You will be disrupted at all future speeches,” Torossian messaged Davidai on WhatsApp, according to communications shared with JTA. “You are a radical.”

 

Davidai has also urged his followers against supporting any further killings or mass expulsions in Gaza, a stark contrast to Betar’s own stated views. Yet in the comments, many of Davidai’s own followers have begun taking Betar’s side, accusing him of naively trying to make peace with the enemy.

 

Like Davidai, Betar’s activism sprang out of last spring’s encampment movement — and its evolving pro-Israel counterforces. Last spring the Shirion Collective, a pro-Israel group similar in temperament to Betar, counter-demonstrated at the University of California, Los Angeles encampments alongside other pro-Israel contingents. The conflict devolved into a violent brawl with several arrests.

Witnesses at the time said the UCLA pro-Israel counter-protesters chanted “Second Nakba,” a reference to the Arabic word for “catastrophe” — how Palestinians refer to their mass displacement at the State of Israel’s founding. In the Forward, David Myers, a Jewish professor at UCLA and president of the New Israel Fund, called the pro-Israel contingent “a violent band of thugs intent on inflicting damage” and condemned the school for not being prepared to intervene sooner.

 

Betar US hadn’t yet been officially constituted at the time, and Torossian said the group had no ties to what happened at UCLA in the spring. But when anti-Zionist students set up a sukkah in the fall, the new group issued its own threat: “We demand police remove these thugs now and if not we will be forced to organize groups of Jews to do so.”

 

Recently, revisiting its statement, Betar declared, “We are proud of what we have done at UCLA. Yes if the police don’t do their job Betar will.”

 

Davidai still believes his own movement will win over Jews in the end. Betar, he believes, is mainly composed of “frustrated keyboard warriors” with a misguided view of activism. “A lot of people confuse peacefulness and nonviolence with submissiveness. They confuse community organizing as weakness,” he said.

 

“Organizations like Betar are not interested in the free marketplace of ideas,” Davidai added. “They’re interested in canceling people they disagree with, ad-hominem attacks, shouting, counter-protesting.”

 

Still, he said, “They’re not as bad as people who support Hamas.”

The group’s own internal operations appear as chaotic as its street actions. While JTA was reporting this story, Ross Glick was for months identified as Betar’s executive director. Glick outlined many of the group’s priorities in an extensive interview with JTA on Jan. 28, noting he had “relationships with a number of people” in the U.S. Senate and executive branch, and said several of Betar’s goals have become realized since Trump took office.

 

Five days later, without explanation, Betar announced Glick was no longer with the organization.

 

Glick stopped responding to requests for comment after his departure, while Torossian declined to elaborate beyond stating, “Ross is no longer working for Betar.” On social media, pro-Palestinian activists were circulating a 2019 New York Post article detailing Glick’s arrest on revenge-porn charges as a means of discrediting Betar.

 

The group has newly onboarded a spokeswoman, Sloan Rachmuth, who is a conservative activist in North Carolina who often takes video of protesters at UNC. She was arrested in November under suspicion of cyberstalking a pro-Palestinian supermarket employee before charges were later dropped.

 

Rachmuth, who on Tuesday called a pro-Palestinian UNC student who was stripped of a prestigious scholarship a “fat retard” on social media, said she is grateful for Betar for giving her own activism a lot of “moral support.” They are much more helpful to her cause than the Jewish federations and other mainstream groups, she said. “A lot of Jewish groups don’t do anything but talk.”

 

Like Rachmuth, both Glick and Torossian have faced down law enforcement over some of their Betar-related activity — and, prior to their split, seemed happiest when Betar was causing trouble.

 

“We are proud to have stopped numerous encampments,” Torossian said. “There will not be encampments in the United States that we do not attend.”

 

It’s this desire to confront that has endeared Betar to its new recruits, several of whom, like Schanzer, have gone viral for street actions countering pro-Palestinian protests. Those include a non-Jewish military veteran in Massachusetts arrested after shooting a pro-Palestinian protester who jumped him and a rabbi and his son in Milwaukee who were arrested after destroying a real-estate owner’s pro-Palestinian mural that depicted a Star of David turning into a swastika. Last week a Betar affiliate counter-protested at a demonstration outside the home of a Jewish regent of UCLA, where a pro-Palestinian group was directing threats like “Divest now, or you will pay.”

But, he said, Torossian assured him there was a place for him in Betar, since both believed Jews should stop “just being meek and allowing ourselves to be threatened and walked over. So I said, sure.” Betar helped the Mehlers raise legal fees, and Torossian lobbied for their case in the press, calling them “heroes.” Since then, Mehler has happily promoted Betar on social media.

 

“I think Betar collects the people whose reaction to threats is ‘fight,’” Mehler mused, adding that such people sometimes “are a little militant.” Adapting a “Sopranos”-like, tough-guy accent, he imitated a Betar member: “I’m gonna fight this thing. No one’s gonna tell me what to f—ing do.”

 

Before he left the group, Glick insisted that Betar, which is a registered nonprofit, does not endorse political candidates or policy proposals in either the United States or Israel. “We’re not for or against Trump. We’re not for or against Biden or Bibi. That’s not our position,” he said. “At the end of the day, we are an educational organization promoting Zionism.”

 

But Torossian has represented figures in Trump and Netanyahu’s orbits, including Eric Trump and, at one point, Netanyahu’s Likud party. And since Glick’s departure, Betar’s social media has proclaimed, “We stand with @netanyahu and @RealDonaldTrump.”

 

Betar’s accounts frequently voice bromides closely aligned with the Jewish and Israeli far right, recently tweeting, “Both sides of the Jordan River are ours” (a quote from a song attributed to Jabotinsky) and spotlighting “friends” clad in gear from the JDL.

 

Asked about the JDL, Torossian, who also said he does not write Betar’s tweets, claimed he was unaware of any similarities between his group and the far-right militant gang founded by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane. He also rejects any characterization of Betar as “extreme,” “far-right” or a “militia.” Betar’s social media, meanwhile, recently shared a clip of a member expressing nostalgia for “the Rabbi Meir Kahane days.”

 

“We don’t want peace. We don’t want co-existence,” Betar declared after a recent chaotic hostage release from Gaza. “It’s us or them. Choose a side. Society or the rapestinians.”

 

Betar has also endorsed a policy proposal, floated by Trump multiple times including during a joint press conference this week with Netanyahu, to force all Palestinians in Gaza to resettle in Egypt, Jordan or other neighboring countries. The view is far to the right of nearly every large American Jewish group and the international community, which has stated for months that any permanent displacement of Gazans as a result of the war would constitute ethnic cleansing.

 

“I think it’s a very good idea,” Glick said about Trump’s proposal. “It’s a giant pile of rubble. How can you rebuild there?”

 

Betar’s messaging occasionally stretches to other right-wing talking points that have little to do directly with Judaism, like a stance against “transgenderism” and a swipe at progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar — not for her vociferous Israel criticism, but because of her efforts to help fellow Somali refugees. The group has even backed figures whose right-wing nationalist views overlap with antisemitism, like British anti-immigration advocate Tommy Robinson (who in 2023 was arrested after attending a march against antisemitism against the wishes of the march’s Jewish organizers).

This shouldn’t be surprising, Myers told JTA. The UCLA professor said he sees Betar as an outgrowth of a long culture of “toxicity” and “disinhibition” in American politics. He believes that spirit has, over the last few years, animated not just groups like Betar but also institutional Jewish groups’ way of thinking about Israel’s critics.

 

“It rhymes with a lot of the efforts of more mainstream organizations which, in my mind, equate support for Palestinians, Palestinian self-determination, with a pro-Hamas, pro-terrorism stance,” he said. “Betar takes rise out of that legitimization of the claim that disagreeing with Israel’s actions in Gaza is akin to antisemitism.”

 

For some pro-Israel activists, Betar can be complicated. “I see them post videos, and it’s like, why are you filming yourself screaming at people? That doesn’t look good,” Billie Little, a pro-Israel street artist in New Orleans who has joined forces with Schanzer, told JTA about Betar. “There are times I feel like, ‘OK, I don’t know if I want to be all-in on this.’”

 

Still, Little said she accepted Betar’s help in raising money for her and Schanzer to acquire paint supplies. And she’s helped Betar put up a Zionist mural in her hometown of New York City. At the same time, she notes, “I strongly disagree with them on many stances, particularly concerning their endorsement of President Trump’s plans for Gaza.”

 

Little said she was spurred to work with the group despite her disagreements because of its sense of urgency. Some Jewish groups — including federations like the one that commissioned her to design a mural in New Orleans — are “taking the more quiet approach, a more mild-mannered approach, a more, arguably, civil approach. Which I think is important,” she said. “But I think sometimes that approach has left many Jewish people, just laymen like us, feeling very helpless. Do I just wait for you, with this organization, to save the day? What can I do to stand up for myself?”

 

Jewish Federations of North America did not return requests for comment on Betar; neither did the American Jewish Committee, which often asserts itself as an antisemitism first-responder. The ADL, a frequent target of Betar’s ire, declined to comment.

 

On the one-year anniversary of Oct. 7, days after Schanzer’s own video, Betar pinned a post to its X profile: a screenshot of the hardline pro-Palestinian group Within Our Lifetime announcing that it had received “several violent threats from Zionists.”

 

Betar appended its own commentary: “#JewsFightBack.”

 

In 1923, as diaspora Jews were fiercely debating what the future of Zionism would look like, Ze’ev Jabotinsky was ready to lead its right flank.

Zionist youth movements were gathering across Europe, and the Ukrainian-born writer and activist, who was intrigued by Italian fascism and sought a militaristic following that could answer to him, brought together insurgent groups in Latvia for his aims. He gave them the name Betar, after the final fortress of the ancient, failed Jewish Bar Kochba revolt against the Roman Empire.

 

“He organized them and gave them a common identity,” the Israeli-American writer Hillel Halkin, author of a 2014 biography of Jabotinsky, said in an interview. Key to the leader’s appeal, Halkin said, was his willingness to physically fight back.

 

“Jabotinsky also always believed that you never take a blow or an insult sitting down, that you have to return blow for blow, in one way or another,” Halkin said. “So for him the question would not be, is it permissible to use violence against violence? It would simply be, is it practical? Does this make political sense?”

 

Halkin, who lives in Israel, was surprised to learn of Betar’s resurgence in the United States. He didn’t love the idea. On the one hand, he speculated that a renewed sense of “Jewish militancy” could help “fight back against the anti-Israel militancy of the intifada, pro-Hamas people on the campuses or even elsewhere.”

 

Yet, he said, “I don’t think that a handful of hotheaded extremists fanning the flames are what young American Jews on campuses need.”

 

He also insisted Jabotinsky would probably have disapproved of Betar’s habit of swarming and intimidating pro-Palestinian protests: “I don’t think Jabotinsky would have wanted to shut anybody up who was saying the most vile things about Jews or Israel. As long as there was no incitement to physical violence.”

 

Jabotinsky is revered by Torossian, who grew up in what remained of an earlier iteration of the Betar movement and references the founder in Betar communications every chance he can get. The group’s website praises Jabotinsky’s “vision” and “legacy,” and reproduces the Hebrew oath he encouraged all Betar followers to take.

“Jabotinsky was, for many of us, the most formidable Zionist ever. Including Netanyahu,” Torossian said. “We believe ultimately we will only be safe in the Jewish state. Glick, too, grew up in Betar as a young Jew in the Cleveland area. “My first trip to Israel, when I was a teenager, was with Betar,” he recalled. “It was a nice social community.” Unlike Torossian, who was Betar’s national president for years, he drifted away from the organization as he became an adult.

 

The two men had vaguely known each other through New York marketing industry circles before connecting at a counter-protest in Grand Central Terminal last summer. Glick recalled getting into a “screaming match” with a protester, saying, “I would never shy away from somebody who gets in my face.”

 

Torossian, meanwhile, had recently been arrested at Syracuse University, where a child of his is enrolled, for getting into a fight with an encampment protester. He was charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing. (When he described the incident to JTA he noted that the man he’d fought had previously been convicted of manslaughter and that, in his view, the school had been negligent in not having his adversary removed from campus earlier.) The episode had convinced him that the Jews needed to heed the example of Jabotinsky again. Torossian told Glick he was looking to relaunch Betar for the age of Oct. 7 and social media.

 

Glick agreed to become the group’s new director, and the two immediately set out trying to grow their national presence. After Scott Hayes, a non-Jewish Iraq War veteran in Newton, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with assault and battery for shooting a pro-Palestinian protester who attacked him, Betar hired trucks to drive through town reading, “Is self defense illegal in Middlesex County??”

 

Video from the protest shows an activist sprinting at Hayes from across the street to tackle him; Hayes, who was armed, told JTA he had fired his weapon in self defense and later administered first aid to his assailant. His case, which is ongoing, has become a local flashpoint not only for Israel-related criminal cases, but also for Massachusetts self-defense laws.

 

Torossian reached out to Hayes after the case was publicized and “offered help,” Hayes said. “He’s able to make things happen. He’s been extremely supportive.”

 

“I think Betar has a place in the world,” Hayes said. Currently enrolled in an online Intro to Judaism class, he offered an analogy: “I would view them as modern-day Maccabees.”

 

In addition to helping some of their members navigate the law, Betar is also involving itself in other legal matters. The group is advocating for the family of Aviv Broek, a 21-year-old Israeli locksmith who was murdered in Memphis in November. Authorities have said the ongoing investigation has uncovered no evidence the murder was motivated by antisemitism. But Torossian is convinced otherwise, and Betar recently disseminated a statement on behalf of a Broek family friend calling for a hate crimes investigation.

 

“Today in 2024, we are Israelis and we are aware of the reality that Jews are being hunted worldwide. The enemies of the Jewish people have called to globalize the intifada and we are concerned that this may be the case in Memphis,” the friend wrote on Betar’s website, next to a large illustration of Jabotinsky. Betar also says it will help the Broek family with the case and advocate in Washington on their behalf.

 

The group’s campus activities have prompted the attention of the universities, as was the case for a provocation Betar stirred up in November at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

At the campus, where Glick’s son is enrolled, Betar posted on social media that he would be handing out “beepers” to the campus SJP chapter. It was, he now says, a bit of dark humor related to Israel’s “exploding pagers” operation targeting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon last September. But the university didn’t think it was so funny, and soon alerted its student body to what it said were threatening texts being directed at Palestinian students. The university did not respond to a JTA request for comment about the incident.

Betar US hopes that tomorrow’s Jewish leaders will also come out of the movement. Before he left, Glick said he hoped to soon “activate in a more formal way,” with official leadership positions, chapters and campus clubs.

 

“I’d be very concerned by what Betar US has planned,” Myers said, calling the group’s beeper drops “very scary.” Recently Netanyahu offered his own version of a beeper joke, giving Trump a “golden pager” during his recent state visit.

 

“It seems we’re half a step away from physical violence,” Myers said. “And I would say, if there are respectable parties left in the Jewish community, this is a moment of reckoning, to say, ‘Wait a minute, this is going way too far.’”

BBC pulls Gaza documentary after star revealed as son of Hamas minister

British broadcaster says ‘Gaza: How To Survive A War Zone’ to be unavailable until ‘due diligence’ is conducted; narrator’s links to Hamas not disclosed

The BBC on Friday removed a documentary about the Gaza war from its online streaming service after it emerged that the child who is a central figure in the film is the son of a Hamas deputy minister, a fact that was at no time disclosed in the movie.

 

“Gaza: How To Survive a War Zone” is narrated by Abdullah Al-Yazouri, a 14-year-old boy. The Telegraph reported earlier this week that the teen’s father is Ayman Al-Yazouri, deputy minister of agriculture in the Strip’s Hamas government.

 

“‘Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone’ features important stories we think should be told — those of the experiences of children in Gaza,” the BBC said in a statement.

 

“There have been continuing questions raised about the program and in light of these, we are conducting further due diligence with the production company,” it said. “The program will not be available on iPlayer while this is taking place.”

 

After the narrator’s Hamas connections were revealed, the British network initially said the film would remain available to view with “some details” added. The broadcaster later succumbed to widespread criticism and removed the film.

 

Former BBC One controller Danny Cohen led the criticism of the program, questioning whether the BBC paid Hamas members during the filming, the Guardian reported.

 

“[The] documentary fails the most basic of program standards,” Cohen said on Friday, according to the Guardian. “Links to the terrorist group Hamas were not disclosed”

 

“It appears that children have been manipulated by terrorists,” he added.

 

The younger Al-Yazouri’s Hamas connections were initially revealed on X by journalist David Collier.

 

The Guardian quoted Collier describing Al-Yazouri “as the child of Hamas royalty.”

 

The elder Al-Yazouri’s LinkedIn profile says he has been deputy agriculture minister in Gaza since July 2021 and before that worked as an assistant to the deputy minister in Gaza’s education ministry. Hamas controls all government institutions in Gaza.

 

After Collier revealed the film’s Hamas connections, a letter signed by 45 prominent Jewish journalists and members of the media calling for the program to be taken down was published.

 

“Given the serious nature of these concerns, the BBC should immediately postpone any broadcast repeats of the program, remove it from iPlayer and take down any social media clips of the program until an independent investigation is carried out and its findings published with full transparency for license-fee payers,” the letter said.

 

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, a pro-Palestinian NGO, condemned the criticism of the documentary, saying that despite Ayman Al-Yazouri being “a civil servant in Gaza’s Agriculture Ministry,” that “does not negate Abdullah’s lived experience as a child in Gaza nor does it invalidate his testimony.”

 

The Guardian reported that British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said she would inquire into how the documentary was sourced, adding: “These things are difficult and I do want to acknowledge that the BBC take more care than most broadcasters … They’ve been attacked for being too pro-Gaza, they’ve been attacked for being anti-Gaza.”

 

The UK public broadcaster has been criticized for its refusal to describe Hamas as terrorists, even though the group’s military wing is proscribed by the United Kingdom as such, and even after the widespread documentation of its systematic targeting of civilians on October 7, 2023.

 

The October 7 massacre saw Hamas-led terrorists kill some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnap 251.

 

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 48,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.

 

Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.

Myanmar military adapts FLIR systems for expanding drone war

The Myanmar military has begun enhancing its expanding unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities, adapting forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems for tactical attack drones.

The newly introduced use of thermal imaging FLIR technology in an escalating drone war emerged in propaganda video footage posted on social media sympathetic to the State Administration Council (SAC) military regime on 7 February.

 

The footage from a drone-mounted FLIR camera showed night-time combat on 6 February in and around the prison in Bhamo, a city in northern Kachin State besieged since December 2024 by forces of the ethnic Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied People's Defence Forces (PDFs).

Thermal imaging revealed groups of individual soldiers running between and into buildings and then being targeted by munitions – so-called ‘drop bombs' – released from the same rotary unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV).

 

Commentary accompanying the video noted that footage from a drone-mounted FLIR camera was released by the military for the first time in January and showed night-time combat also in Bhamo city.

The commentary also noted that FLIR technology has long been used in Myanmar Air Force (MAF) Mil Mi-35 attack helicopters and other manned platforms, but that its adaptation to UCAVs began in 2025 in the protracted and ongoing battle for Bhamo.

Ukrainian drones reportedly strike Russian refinery in Ryazan Oblast for 3rd time in 2025

Drones operated by Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces struck an oil refinery in Russia's Ryazan Oblast, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on Feb. 24.

Kyiv considers oil refineries to be valid military targets, as profits from the fossil fuel industry fund Russia's war machine.

 

This is the third time since the beginning of 2025 that drones have attacked the Ryazan Oil Refinery, according to the independent Telegram channel Astra.

The Ryazan Oil Refining Company's facility was previously struck overnight on Jan. 24 and Jan. 26.

 

At least five explosions were heard near the facility. According to preliminary data from the General Staff, the attack caused a fire near the primary oil processing facility.

The full consequences of the attack are still being determined, according to the statement.

 

Ryazan Oblast Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed that falling drone debris had caused a fire at "one of the enterprises" in the region. According to Malkov, no one was injured.

Ryazan lies almost 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border.

 

The Ryazan Oil Refinery is one of Russia's five largest oil refining facilities, according to Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation. Its capacity is 17.1 million metric tons of oil per year.

Kovalenko added that the fuel produced at the enterprise is used by the Russian army's strategic long-range aviation, which launches missile strikes against Ukraine.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims.

 

The Ryazan Oil Refinery previously suspended operations due to damage from Ukrainian drone attacks, Reuters reported on Jan. 27, citing two industry sources.

Ukraine confirmed hitting the plant in an overnight drone strike on Jan. 24.

Arizona guardswoman recovers after drone attack, and receives Purple Heart

An Arizona guardswoman is on the road to recovery after surviving a deadly drone attack during a deployment in Jordan in 2024.

It left her with life-long injuries, but she's not letting that get in her way.

 

What we know:

Sgt. Aneska Holness was just weeks into her deployment in Jordan when the drone strike happened.

 

"I was sleeping. I was in one of the room's buildings that were hit. It's honestly just waking up to chaos. It was very unexpected.

I don't think anyone really thought that would happen while we were there," Holness said.

"There's a sense of security and safety that you felt, especially because the base hadn't been hit in over 20-plus years."

 

She was one of dozens of Arizona service members who were hit in the attack. Dozens were injured, including Holness, but she still found a way to help her friend.

"She was calling out for help and everything else didn't matter in that moment. It was just trying to get to her.

"So once I got to her, and we helped her get out, that's when I really understood the scope of what had happened," she said.

 

Holness received the Purple Heart for her traumatic brain injuries and hip wounds.

"It was an honor meeting everybody else or some of the soldiers that got that award as well, but I think more than anything, myself included, my family, is just happy I'm still here," Holness said.

She's still here, but with more surgeries on the way. She remains focused on her future growth.

While serving, she went to Arizona State University, obtaining an undergrad degree in anthropology.

Then, while recovering, she made a choice to go back to school.

 

"When it came time for me to receive my master's, it was an easy choice," she said. 'I try to focus on the goal'

She attended ASU once again. This time, she earned a master's focusing on cybersecurity. It was a tremendous undertaking while also learning how to walk again and recovering at Fort Bliss.

"I try to focus on the goal," Holness said. "The end goal. That has been a source of motivation for me." She has plenty of motivation, and a mom and family who couldn't be prouder.

 

"I think they have seen more than anyone else how hard I've worked for it.

Especially after the injuries and having my surgeries done, I still had to work that much harder to be able to focus not just on recovery, but being able to complete with good grades as well, so they're really proud of me and celebrate my accomplishments," Holness said.

'Terrorist Attack' Rocks Russian Consulate In France On 3-Year Ukraine War Mark

 

A suspected terror attack has taken place against the Russian consulate in the French city of Marseille on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has confirmed, after explosions erupted inside the consulate's walls. Three explosive devices were thrown onto the grounds of the consulate which detonated, resulting in damage but no casualties. The diplomatic compound has subsequently been sealed off by police pending an investigation.

 

The attack corresponded to the three-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Army poured across the borders from Russia and staging grounds in Belarus on February 24, 2022.

 

There are reports that one of the devices failed to detonate, and the building in the southern port city is swarming with police and firefighters, as "around thirty units" were dispatched to the scene, AFP describes. The device that did not explode was later detonated by a police-operated robot.

 

"The explosions on the territory of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille have all the signs of a terrorist attack," foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing.

 

"We demand that the host country undertake exhaustive and speedy investigative measures, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russia's foreign missions," she said. This isn't the first time explosives have been 'randomly' hurled at Russian diplomatic compounds in Europe, but this one clearly planned and timed to mark the day of Feb.24.

 

The Associated Press has some further details as follows:

 

A second device, which was also thrown against the consulate's outer wall, did not explode and fell to the sidewalk. A bomb disposal expert was called to the scene.

 

The suspect fled and an investigation has been launched, an official said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named by national police policy. Authorities did not provide details on the suspect or a motive.

 

For its part the French government has "condemned any attack on the security of diplomatic compounds. The inviolability, protection and integrity of diplomatic and consular premises, as well as their personnel, are fundamental principles of international law" in a statement.

 

Russian embassies and consulates are on high alert worldwide, given the potential for more attacks marking three years since the invasion.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed concerns about potential foreign interference in the country’s elections, just days after US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had allocated $21 million to boost voter turnout in the South Asian nation.

 

Speaking at the Delhi University Literature Festival on Saturday during a conversation with Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Jaishankar said: “As a government we are looking into it because such organizations have an obligation to report. And my sense is, the facts will come out.”

 

The minister added that USAID was allowed to operate in India “in good faith.” However, the information that is now “emerging from the US administration” seems to reveal activities “which are in bad faith,” Jaishankar emphasized.

 

The mention of $21 million in funding allegedly provided to India first appeared earlier, in the list of cancelled programs released by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk.

 

This has sparked a political row in New Delhi regarding the intended recipients of these funds. The Indian foreign ministry previously stated that they are looking into “deeply troubling” information about US government activity in the country.

 

Trump, addressing an event in Miami last week, questioned the intent of this allocation. “Why do we need to spend $21 million for voter turnout in India? Wow, $21 million! I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected,” he said.

 

Trump later mentioned the funding for “voter turnout” in India in several public speeches. Repeating the claim at a Republican Governors Association (RGA) meeting, he alleged the funding had essentially been meant for “kickbacks” to those who allocated the money.

Six Girls, Ages 11 to 14, Arrested After Heinously Violent Assault – Hate Crime Enhancement Now in Play

 

Six girls ranging between the ages of 11 and 14 allegedly assaulted a woman at Union Station in Washington, D.C., resulting in their arrests.

 

Metropolitan Police Department authorities learned of the incident on Wednesday as video of the assault circulated on social media, depicting the group of girls “repeatedly punching and kicking” a woman as she “walked outside of Union Station,” per a news release from the agency.

 

“One of the suspects recorded the assault and encouraged the other suspects to continue their attack,” the release added.

 

The girls allegedly attacked other pedestrians who tried to intervene, but none of those victims were severely injured.

 

Detectives arrested an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old on Thursday in relation to the crime.

 

Both face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to riot, simple assault, and disorderly conduct.

 

Four more girls, who were between the ages of 11 and 14, were arrested on Friday.

 

Those girls face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and rioting.

 

The investigation revealed that all six girls were potentially motivated by “hate or bias,” meaning they will each face charges of assault with a deadly weapon, along with hate crime enhancements.

 

Chief of Police Pamela Smith commended the detectives for “quickly identifying and apprehending these individuals so our criminal justice system can hold them accountable.”

 

“I hope the swiftness of these arrests, and the consequences these young people will soon face, deters activity like this from occurring again,” she added.

 

“We need to continue instilling values in our youngest residents that steer them toward success and away from criminal behavior.”

 

The incident involved as many as nine suspects, according to a report from WJLA-TV in Washington.

 

The outlet observed that the Union Station assault was part of a larger pattern of juvenile crimes in the nation’s capital.

 

Another high-profile juvenile crime involved a robbery during which two minor suspects stole a man’s Canada Goose jacket on a Green Line train traveling between Congress Heights and Anacostia.

 

The two juvenile suspects were then arrested in Maryland over additional crimes.

 

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser voiced frustration about the trend on Friday, especially since many juvenile suspects are able to avoid prosecution through diversion programs which purportedly help to rehabilitate them, per WJLA.

Protesters take aim at Anduril drones and weapons plant near Columbus

More than two dozen demonstrators gathered outside the Ohio Air National Guard Base at Rickenbacker International Airport on Sunday afternoon to protest Anduril's planned drone factory in central Ohio.

The protest, organized by several Ohio activist groups, is one of the first public displays of opposition to Anduril's planned $900-million "Arsenal 1" drone factory, which the company has said would employ more than 4,000 people.

 

Organizer Darrin Broering with Veterans for Peace—a national anti-war group of military veterans—led the protest's proceedings. He said he is against any weapons manufacturing occurring in central Ohio.

"Yes, (Anduril is) gonna create a bunch of jobs, but those jobs could be producing any number of things that would be more productive and less destructive as well," Broering said.

 

Over around 90 minutes, the gathered protesters clutched signs critical of Anduril and the U.S. military, listened to speeches from activist leaders and joined in chants of "O-H-I-O, all these drones have got to go."

Pat Marida, a coordinator with the Ohio Nuclear Free Network, said she was concerned the factory would start wars, increase militarization around the world, harm the planet, and allow the company to "cement over central Ohio."

 

Sunday's protest was a way for her to coordinate with other activists so they could plan to stop the money flowing to Anduril, she said.

"If we stop the money, we can stop this," she said.

 

What is Anduril?

Anduril is a Southern California-based defense technology company that contracts with the U.S. military.

The company sells drones, underwater vehicles, rocket motors, AI defense systems and virtual reality systems, according to the company's website.

In January, Anduril announced it plans to invest around $900 million in a Pickaway County factory making drones, saying it would employ more than 4,000 workers.

The facility —dubbed "Arsenal 1"— would produce the company's Fury unmanned aircraft system before adding production of its Barracuda and Roadrunner drones later, The Dispatch previously reported.

 

The state of Ohio plans to spend $70 million to build a taxiway and other improvements at Rickenbacker International Airport for the new factory, The Dispatch previously reported.

Production at the factory is planned to start in the middle of 2026.

 

What's the history of Anduril?

Anduril was cofounded by Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus virtual reality headset, and others in 2017.

The company's current CEO, Brian Schimpf, also helped cofound Anduril after working at Palantir Technologies, a company founded by right-wing philanthropist and billionaire Peter Thiel.

Thiel helped lead the latest round of fundraising for Anduril, according to Tech Funding News.

Hamas Says Israel’s Delay in Releasing Palestinians Is ‘Blatant Violation’ of Ceasefire Deal

 

Israel was supposed to free more than 600 Palestinians from Israeli jails in exchange for the six Israeli captives Hamas released on Saturday

 

On Sunday, Hamas responded to Israel’s decision to delay the release of more than 600 Palestinians from Israeli jails as a “blatant violation” of the hostage and ceasefire deal.

 

Under the deal, Israel was supposed to release 620 Palestinians, including women and children detained in Gaza after October 7, 2023, in exchange for the six Israeli hostages Hamas handed over on Saturday.

 

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the release was delayed over alleged Hamas “violations,” including the handover ceremonies, which he said “humiliate” the Israeli hostages.

 

In response, Hamas official Ezzat El Rashq said Netanyahu’s decision “reflects a deliberate attempt to disrupt the agreement, represents a blatant violation of its terms, and shows the occupation’s lack of reliability in implementing its obligations.”

 

Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire deal, including by continuing to shoot and bomb Palestinians in Gaza. Since the truce went into effect on January 19, Israeli forces have killed more than 100 Palestinians in the territory.

 

Netanyahu said that the release of the 620 Palestinians was delayed until “the release of the next hostages has been assured, and without the humiliating ceremonies.”

 

The six Israelis freed by Hamas on Saturday were the last of the surviving hostages who were set to be released under the first phase of the ceasefire deal, and the progress of the negotiations on the second phase, which Israel repeatedly delayed, is unclear. Another Hamas official said on Sunday that the negotiations would be suspended until Israel released the jailed Palestinians.

 

Israeli media reported last week that Netanyahu had added several new demands for the second phase, including continued Israeli “security control” of Gaza and the disarmament and removal of Hamas, two conditions Hamas has strongly rejected.

 

Netanyahu has also been warning he’s ready to restart Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, a threat he repeated on Sunday. “We are prepared to resume intense fighting at any moment,” he said. “In Gaza, we have eliminated most of Hamas’s organized forces, but let there be no doubt — we will complete the war’s objectives entirely — whether through negotiation or by other means.”

Latest US Strike Killed Brother of Syrian Government Minister

 

CENTCOM claims man was ‘senior leadership facilitator’ for al-Qaeda-linked faction

 

The US has continued carrying out airstrikes against Syria’s Idlib Governorate’s Harem District, near the Tel al-Karama refugee camp this weekend, targeting and killing Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, who they described as a “senior leadership facilitator” for the al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Din.

 

It is the third US drone strike against Idlib since President Trump took office last month, and all three reportedly targeted and killed Hurras al-Din leaders. This is particularly noteworthy since Hurras al-Din announced it was dissolving in late January, before any of these attacks.

 

This latest attack is perhaps an even bigger deal because Bayraqdar is the brother of Samer Bayraqdar, who is the Syrian government’s current Religious Endowments Minister. The ministry ensures that endowments are used properly for the maintaining of mosques and to help pay for religious education.

 

The US claimed the Bayraqdar that they killed was an active member of Hurras al-Din, despite the obvious handicap of that group apparently having dissolved weeks ago. Syrian researchers are also reporting that the man actually left Hurras al-Din five years ago after becoming disillusioned with the group.

 

The statement from researcher Mohammed Munir al-Faqir, who claimed to have met Bayraqdar in 2022, after he had already left Hurras al-Din and became a businessman, declaring that the US had killed “an isolated civilian citizen” and urging they retract their previous targets and reevaluate them.

 

That’s unlikely to happen, as the US, at least, seems satisfied with the narrative that Bayraqdar was an active “finance and logistics officer” at Hurras al-Din, and indeed has never appeared to even acknowledge the very public dissolution of the organization.

 

Hurras al-Din was effectively al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria. They were distinct from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is broadly the current government. HTS had similar ideology to Hurras al-Din and going back through a series of rebrandings and renamings got its own start as al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), the original al-Qaeda affiliate in neighboring Iraq.

 

Therefore it is not necessarily implausible that a minister from an al-Qaeda-linked government might well have a brother affiliated with a separate al-Qaeda-linked organization. At the same time there is a paucity of evidence that this was actually the case, just a claim from CENTCOM that they hold that to be true.

 

There’s also no sign the US is slowing down on striking Syria, as on Sunday another strike was reported in Idlib, which killed another person. Details are still emerging on this newest strike though it seems probable that whoever this was, it will be presented as something to do with Hurras al-Din.

Israeli Defense Minister Says 40,000 Forcibly Displaced Palestinians in West Bank Cannot Return Home

 

Israeli tanks are now operating in the occupied West Bank for the first time since 2002

 

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Sunday that the Israeli military has forcibly displaced 40,000 Palestinians in the northern occupied West Bank and that they couldn’t return home as the IDF will be operating in the area over the next year, raising fears of a new ethnic cleansing campaign.

 

The Israeli military launched the current operation in the West Bank, dubbed “Iron Wall,” on January 21. It has been focused on the northern cities of Jenin and Tulkarm but has spread elsewhere in the occupied territory. In a new escalation, Israeli tanks entered the West Bank on Sunday for the first time since 2002.

 

Katz said in a statement that he ordered the Israeli military “to prepare for an extended stay in the camps that have been cleared for the coming year, and not to allow residents to return.”

 

“We will not return to the reality that existed in the past. We will continue to clear refugee camps and other terrorist centers in order to dismantle the [militant] battalions and terrorist infrastructures of extremist Islam that were built,” Katz added.

 

The tank deployment into the West Bank came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an escalation in the occupied territory following the bombing of empty buses in the Israeli city of Bat Yam near Tel Aviv. Israeli officials blamed West Bank resistance groups for the attack, and a note was left that said “revenge from Tulkarm.” However, two Jewish Israelis were arrested over their alleged involvement in the bombing.

 

According to the UN, more than 50 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the new operation was launched last month. The dead include many civilians and children as the Israeli military expanded an “open fire order” in the occupied territory.

 

On Friday, two Palestinian children were killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank. Rimas al-Amouri, a 13-year-old girl, was shot in the back while standing in the courtyard of her family home in Jenin.

 

Ayman Nassar Taysir al-Hemouni, a 12-year-old boy, was also shot in the back while standing near the home of a family member in the southern West Bank city of Hebron. Both al-Hemouni and al-Amouri were shot by Israeli troops who were inside armored vehicles.

 

Israel’s escalations in the West Bank have also involved the destruction of infrastructure, including roads and homes, mirroring the strategies of the IDF in Gaza. When “Iron Wall” was first launched, Katz said the Israeli military was applying “lessons” that it had learned in Gaza.

Starbucks plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees globally as new Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations.

 

In a letter to employees released Monday, Niccol said the company will inform employees who are being laid off by mid-day Tuesday. Niccol said Starbucks is also eliminating several hundred open and unfilled positions.

 

“Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration,” Niccol wrote in the letter.

 

Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, but that includes some employees who aren’t impacted, like roasting and warehouse staff. Baristas in the company’s stores are not included in the layoffs.

 

Niccol said in January that corporate layoffs would be announced by early March. He said all work must be overseen by someone who can make decisions while the the Seattle coffee giant reduces the complexity of its structure and eliminates silos within the company that slow communication.

 

“Our size and structure can slow us down, with too many layers, managers of small teams and roles focused primarily on coordinating work,” Niccol wrote.

 

Starbucks hired Niccol last fall to turn around sluggish sales. He has said he wants to improve service times — especially during the morning rush — and reestablish stores as community gathering places.

 

Niccol is also cutting items from Starbucks’ menu and experimenting with its ordering algorithms to better handle its mix of mobile, drive-thru and in-store orders.

 

Starbucks’ global same-store sales, or sales at locations open at least a year, fell 2% in its 2024 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 29. In the U.S., customers tired of price increases and growing wait times. In China, its second-largest market, Starbucks faced growing competition from cheaper rivals.

Jewish Australian officer branded security risk over ties to Israel, 'divided loyalty'

 

A Jewish-Australian Army Reserves officer from Australia could have his security clearance revoked because of his ties to the Jewish State.

 

Due to divided loyalty between Australia and Israel, risk of being influenced by the Mossad, and failure to disclose interactions with Israelis, a Jewish Australian Army Reserves officer’s security clearance was on Thursday recommended to be revoked in an Administrative Review Tribunal ruling.

 

The ruling came in response to an appeal by the officer against a 2023 Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) Adverse Security Assessment recommending stripping Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance because of concerns over his loyalty to Australia, susceptibility to foreign influence, and compliance with security holder obligations.

 

Based on two interviews with the officer, ASIO had determined that he had demonstrated a higher level of loyalty to Israel than Australia. The tribunal concluded that the officer held “divided loyalties between his obligations as a security clearance holder and his faith and Jewish cultural identity,” though noted that he had not been disloyal to Australia.

 

ASIO said that the officer had stated in a 2022 interview that he “loves Israel,” felt a “natural solidarity with Israel,” and, as a Jewish person, has “loyalty to Israel.” He also used “we” in relation to his discussion of Israeli politics. Individuals with backgrounds associated with foreign states are attractive recruitment prospects, according to ASIO.

 

While in the interview, the officer stated that he would not transfer information to Israel “Concerning Australian capability and Australian interest,” he also said that if it were “neutral” information or about a third party, he would notify ASIO about passing on the information.

How the CIA Gave Birth to the Modern Drug Trade in the Americas

 

Anonymous officials informed major US outlets this week about the CIA’s ‘benevolent’ new role: flying MQ-9 Reaper drones over Mexico to spy on drug cartels. What's wrong with this picture?

The carefully placed reports, released within 24 hours of one another, come in the wake of the State Department’s designation of eight major Latin American drug traffickers as “global terrorist organizations.”

Unfortunately for the CIA, anyone with even a cursory knowledge of its activities knows that the agency has been more of an ally, rather than an enemy, to the drug pushers bringing violence and death to American communities.

In 1985, the Iran-Contra scandal exposed the Reagan administration’s facilitation of secret arms sales to Iran to fund rebels in Nicaragua, with the CIA implicated in Contra cocaine trafficking into the US.

In 1996, investigative reporter Gary Webb independently corroborated and elaborated on allegations that the crack epidemic rocking America’s inner cities was linked to traffickers enjoying protection from the CIA.

Webb’s reporting was probed by the federal government and major US media, but any info on the CIA’s involvement was swept under the rug. Webb was found dead in his home in 2004, shot twice in the head. His death was ruled a suicide.

Iran-Contra was just a small part of the CIA’s global drug smuggling empire:

Lawyer, banker, OSS and CIA officer Paul Helliwell has been called the “pioneer of CIA drug dealing.”

In 1962, Helliwell created the Castle Bank & Trust offshore in the Bahamas to support CIA ops against Castro’s Cuba and other anti-US forces across Latin America. Before that, he ran Overseas Supply, a CIA front company smuggling Burmese opium to finance a dirty war against China.

The Bahamian scandal blew up in 1973 during a tax evasion probe by the IRS, with Richard Nixon attempting to clip the CIA’s wings by creating the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Some believe the move, combined with Nixon’s obsession with the JFK murder, helped precipitate Watergate and the president's 1974 resignation in disgrace.
