Lavrov comments on Kiev’s ‘cheating’

Ukraine has sabotaged itself by breaching Russia’s trust in the past, the foreign minister has said

Moscow has ample reasons to distrust Ukraine and its Western backers given their history of broken promises, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said. He accused Kiev of consistently undermining its own interests with each act of “cheating.”

Russia has “burned [its] fingers” many times dealing with the West, Lavrov said in an interview with podcasters Mario Nawfal, Larry Johnson, and Andrew Napolitano published on Wednesday.

He stated that the Ukraine crisis could be traced back to at least 2004, when the country’s constitutional court “expanded, without any right, the constitutional procedures” and ordered a third round in a presidential election, resulting in a victory for a Western-aligned candidate.

The 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, the Minsk agreements, and the 2022 Istanbul peace talks between Russia and Ukraine were also examples of missed opportunities, Lavrov added.

”Had they [Ukrainians] been cooperative and had they delivered on their own initiative, they would still have 1991 borders, minus Crimea, minus some part of Donbass.Every time they cheat, they lose,” the minister stated.

The Turkish-mediated draft truce in 2022 would have transformed Ukraine into a neutral state with some territorial concessions. However, then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Kiev “don’t do it, continue to fight,” Lavrov said.

Following talks between Washington and Kiev on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said Russia’s reaction to his proposal of a 30-day ceasefire would inform him on whether Moscow genuinely wants peace.

Lavrov, however, noted that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky had received a hero’s welcome in the UKafter his clash with Trump at the White House last month.

“It’s an indication that they want to raise the stakes and they are preparing something to pressure the Donald Trump administration back into some aggressive action against Russia,”Lavrov said. Moscow will not compromise on “the fate of the Russian people,” he added, referring to Russian citizens and ethnic Russians in Ukraine.

Lavrov criticized the proposals by several European countries, including the UK and France, to deploy a “peacekeeping force” in Ukraine. “If NATO expansion is recognized – at least by Donald Trump – as one of the root causes [of the conflict], then the presence of the troops from NATO countries under any flag, in any capacity, on Ukrainian soil is the same threat,” he warned.(They have a plan to stop the stupidity.)

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has given a lengthy interview with three US bloggers who traveled to Moscow.The discussion touched on Russian relations with the administration of US President Donald Trump, the settlement of the Ukraine conflict, and other issues.

For more than 90 minutes, Lavrov answered questions from Mario Nawfal, the host of one of the most popular interview shows on X, as well as former CIA analyst and co-founder of the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) group, Larry Johnson, and former judge Andrew Napolitano, who previously worked for Fox News and wrote for the Washington Post and other outlets.

During the interview, Lavrov suggested that “a return to normalcy” has been emerging in the US since the start of Trump’s second term at the White House.

He also reiterated Russia’s readiness to look for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict, but stressed that officials in Moscow “know what must be done” to reach a settlement and “would compromise the fate of the people,” referring to Russian citizens and ethnic Russians in Ukraine.

Greenland to get new government to lead independence process

Talks to form a new Greenland government tasked with mapping a timeline for independence from Denmark were to begin Wednesday, a day after elections that saw support soar for a party seeking to cut ties swiftly.

Tuesday’s vote in the self-governing Danish territory came against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s threats to take over the resource-rich Arctic island, which have shined an unprecedented global spotlight on Greenlandic politics.

''All of the territory’s main political parties, and the majority of the 57,000 inhabitants, back independence.''

But the two parties that came out on top — the opposition centre-right Democrats and the nationalist Naleraq party — disagree on how quickly the process should go.

The Democrats, a “social liberal” party, unexpectedly tripled its score to win 29.9 percent of votes. They want Greenland to cut ties with Denmark only after it has secured its own financial independence.

''Naleraq, which doubled its score to 24.5 percent, wants to break free as soon as possible.''

The election dealt a heavy blow to the two parties in the outgoing government coalition, the left-green Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) and social democratic Siumut.

Until now, they have dominated politics on the island since it was granted home rule in 1979.

– Setting a timetable –

As none of the parties won a majority of the 31 seats in parliament, Wednesday’s negotiations are expected to be about forming a ruling coalition.

If the Democrats “choose to form a government with Naleraq, they would have to speed up their platform on independence and state formation”, a specialist in the region at the University of Copenhagen, Lill Rastad Bjorst, told AFP.

With Naleraq, the Democrats “will likely face constant and explicit demands to outline a concrete plan for the process”, added professor Anne Merrild, an Arctic expert at the University of Aalborg.

Naleraq said it envisages independence within a few years.

“We can do it the same way we exited the European Union (in 1985). That (took) three years. Brexit was three years. Why take longer?” party leader Pele Broberg told AFP on Tuesday.

But some voters and experts have expressed concern that a hasty break from Denmark could fuel Trump’s insatiability.

''The US president has insisted the US will get Greenland “one way or the other”, refusing to rule out the use of force and invoking US national security amid rising Chinese and Russian interest in the Arctic region.''

If the Democrats were to form a government and devise an independence plan “with the other parties, they can stick to their own agenda and focus on building economic growth first,” said Rastad Bjorst.

The territory depends heavily on its fisheries sector, which accounts for almost all of its exports, and annual Danish subsidies of more than $565 million, equivalent to a fifth of its GDP.

Rastad Bjorst said politicians likely wanted to form a government quickly in order to begin negotiations with Denmark and the US, which could provide much-needed investments.

– Call for unity –

Since 2009, a law has enabled Greenland to unilaterally initiate the independence process. It stipulates that talks be held between the Danish and Greenlandic governments to reach an agreement.

That then has to be approved by the Greenlandic parliament, endorsed by a referendum on the island and voted on by the Danish parliament.

The head of the Democrats, 33-year-old Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said after Tuesday’s election victory that his party was “open to talks with all parties”.

“Greenland needs us to remain united, which will be the basis of our negotiations,” he told a televised roundtable.

He also recalled two priorities of his campaign: “a calm approach towards the United States”, and the building of a “foundation” to enable the creation of a Greenlandic state.

Ulrik Pram Gad, a researcher at the Danish Institute of International Affairs, said he expected the Democrats to follow a moderate path.

“They will continue to push Denmark for more equality, but might be more open to Danish investments,” he told AFP.

Now that “Trump’s embrace has been rejected”, he said — referring to the election results — the new government’s task will be “to channel his interest towards economic cooperation.”

Scientists discover smallest galaxy ever seen: 'It's like having a perfectly functional human being that's the size of a grain of rice'

Astronomers have discovered a collection of tiny galaxies located roughly 3 million light-years away that includes the smallest and faintest galaxy ever seen.

This galaxy, designated Andromeda XXXV, and its compatriots orbiting our neighbor galaxy, Andromeda, could change how we think about cosmic evolution.

That's because dwarf galaxies this small should have been destroyed in the hotter and denser conditions of the early universe. Yet somehow, this tiny galaxy survived without being fried.

"These are fully functional galaxies, but they're about a millionth of the size of the Milky Way," team member and University of Michigan professor Eric Bell said in a statement. "It's like having a perfectly functional human being that's the size of a grain of rice."

Dwarf galaxies themselves are nothing new to scientists. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is orbited by dozens of these satellite galaxies caught in the grip of its more immense galaxies.

There is, however, a great deal about dwarf galaxies that scientists don't know. This is because, being smaller, they are much dimmer than major galaxies, making them harder to spot and tougher to study at large distances.

While astronomers have been able to determine many dwarf galaxies in orbit around the Milky Way, identifying dwarf galaxies around our bright galactic neighbors has been incredibly difficult.

This means that the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have been our only source of information about small satellite galaxies.

This task is somewhat less challenging around the closest major galaxy to the Milky Way, Andromeda.

Other dwarf galaxies have been spotted around Andromeda before, but these have been large and bright, thus simply confirming the information that astronomers had gathered about dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way.

To discover these paradigm-shifting smaller and dimmer dwarf galaxies, team leader Marcos Arias, an astronomer at the University of Michigan, and his colleagues scoured various massive astronomical datasets.

The team was also able to obtain time with the Hubble Space Telescope to aid their search.

This revealed that not only is Andromeda XXXV a satellite galaxy, but it is also small enough to change theories of how galaxies evolve.

"It was really surprising," Bell said. "It's the faintest thing you find around, so it's just kind of a neat system. But it's also unexpected in a lot of different ways."

A cosmic murder mystery

One of the key aspects of galactic evolution is how long their star-forming periods last. This seemed to be the main difference between the Milky Way's dwarf galaxies and the smaller satellite galaxies of Andromeda.

"Most of the Milky Way satellites have very ancient star populations. They stopped forming stars about 10 billion years ago," Arias explained.

"What we're seeing is that similar satellites in Andromeda can form stars up to a few billion years ago — around 6 billion years."

Star formation requires a steady supply of gas and dust to collapse and birth stellar bodies. When that gas is gone, star formation halts, and the galaxy "dies."

Thus, Bell described the situation around these small galaxies as a "murder mystery." Did star formation end when dwarf galaxies' gas supplies petered out on their own, or when these gases were gravitationally stripped away by a large galactic host?

In the case of the Milky Way, it appears that the gas for star formation petered out on its own; however, for the smaller galaxies around Andromeda, it appears they were "killed" by their parent galaxy.

"It's a little dark, but it's either did they fall or did they get pushed? These galaxies appear to have been pushed," Bell said. "With that, we've learned something qualitatively new about galaxy formation from them."

What is even more curious is the extended period of star formation experienced by Andromeda XXXV. To understand why, it is necessary to travel back in time to the the birth of the first galaxies.

Why isn't Andromeda XXXV a 'deep fried' galaxy?

The earliest epoch of the universe was marked by incredibly hot and dense conditions. This inflationary period, begun by the Big Bang, continued, and the universe dispersed and cooled.

This allowed the first atoms of hydrogen to take shape, birthing the first stars, which gathered in the first galaxies.

These stars and galaxies blasted out energy as did the first feeding black holes reheating the cosmos.

This signaled the death of very small galaxies, and scientists theorize this heat "cooked off" the gas needed for star formation in such collections of stars.

Yet, somehow, Andromeda XXXV survived!

"We thought they were basically all going to be fried because the entire universe turned into a vat of boiling oil," Bell said.

"We thought that it would completely lose its gas, but apparently that doesn't happen, because this thing is about 20,000 solar masses and yet it was forming stars just fine for a few extra billion years."

Just how Andromeda XXXV resisted being fried is still a mystery.

"I don't have an answer," Bell said. "It is also still true that the universe did heat up; we're just learning the consequences are more complicated than we thought."

NASA and other space agencies are planning missions that could discover further dwarf galaxies around other large galaxies and help solve this mystery.

But there's a good chance that the solution will open up new questions just as the discovery of Andromeda XXXV has. "We still have a lot to discover," Arias said.

"There are so many things that we still need to learn — even about what's near to us — in terms of galaxy formation, evolution, and structure before we can reverse engineer the history of the universe and understand how we came to be where we are today."

Long March 8 launches Thousand Sails satellites from commercial spaceport

A new group of 18 satellites entered orbit Tuesday for the Thousand Sails constellation with the first launch from a new commercial launch pad.

A Long March 8 rocket lifted off at 12:38 p.m. Eastern (1638 UTC) March 11 from launch pad 1 of the Hainan Commercial Launch Site near Wenchang, Hainan island.

The kerosene-liquid oxygen propellant rocket illuminated clouds as it climbed into the night sky.

The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), which provided the rocket, announced launch success in a statement just under an hour after liftoff, confirming that 18 satellites for the Thousand Sails constellations had been inserted into their planned orbits.

The Thousand Sails constellation, also known as Qianfan or G60 Starlink, is a broadband satellite constellation spearheaded by Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST), also known as Spacesail. The project, which aims to deploy 14,000 satellites, seeks to compete in the global satellite internet market.

The launch was the first for Spacesail using the Long March 8. All four previous batch missions, totalling 72 satellites, used the Long March 6A rocket, launching from Taiyuan.

These have been sent into near-polar orbits ranging in altitude from around 800 to 1,070 kilometers.

The satellites have caused concern among astronomers due to their brightness. Spacesail previously stated it aims to have 648 satellites in orbit by the end of 2025.

Spacesail has garnered substantial support, securing approximately $943 million in funding in early 2024, with heavy Shanghai municipal government backing. Genesat, a satellite manufacturing subsidiary of Spacesail, raised $137 million in funding in late December.

Spacesail has received unprecedented financial and regulatory backing from the Shanghai government, Joao Falcao Serra, Research Fellow at the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), told SpaceNews, amounting to more than all publicly disclosed Chinese Satcom funding to date.

The development is part of a wider competition among Chinese local governments to attract players and promote the commercial space sector.

“The swift action by the provincial government highlights the strategic importance of securing such industries for regional development and their need to compete internally to attract these new industries,” Serra said via email.

New commercial spaceport, Long March 8 plans

Hainan Commercial Launch Site is located near the coastal national Wenchang spaceport on the island province of Hainan in the South China Sea.

It is the second launch from the facility, following the launch of the first Long March 12 rocket from launch pad 2 in November.

Tuesday’s Long March 8 launch was the inaugural use of launch pad 1, a facility designed specifically for the rocket. The success paves the way for frequent launches of the rocket from the new pad, according to CALT.

“This successful mission signifies that the Long March 8 rocket now has a dedicated new launch site, laying the foundation for a high-frequency launch schedule this year.

It also means that the Long March 8 has officially entered the market, offering customers fast, efficient, and high-quality launch services,” said Xiao Yun, the Long March 8 series chief commander.

Last month the first Long March 8A launched a second group of satellites for Guowang, a state-backed low Earth orbit megaconstellation, lifting off from the nearby national Wenchang spaceport.

Authorities are expanding the commercial spaceport with the ongoing construction of launch pads 3 and 4, with the aim of facilitating an increase in China’s launch capabilities and cadence.

Commercial launch companies are aiming to conduct test flights of new medium-lift, liquid propellant rockets from the spaceport this year.

China launch plans for 2025

Tuesday’s mission was China’s 11th orbital launch of the year and follows the launch of the classified TJS-15 satellite from Xichang spaceport March 9.

China’s launch targets for the year remain unknown. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the country’s state-owned main space contractor, typically releases a “blue book” in January or February annually, detailing the previous year’s achievements and the main missions and targets for the year ahead. It has yet to do so publicly so far in 2025.

Last year CASC stated that China aimed to launch around 100 times, but ended with 68 orbital launch attempts, still a new national record.

The country may once again aim for 100 or more launches in 2025, especially with new rockets and new launch facilities coming online.

Intelsat secures first customer for communications system aimed at border security

Satellite operator Intelsat has signed its first customer for a communications service designed for public safety, first responders and border security, the company announced March 12.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona will deploy Intelsat’s Multi-Layer Communication System (MLCS) along the U.S.-Mexico border to support operations in previously unconnected areas.

Intelsat CEO David Wajsgras said the company is making a strategic push into a growing market for mobile connectivity in remote areas. In remarks at the Satellite 2025 Conference, Wajsgras said the Cochise County deal represents a key milestone as the company seeks to expand its footprint in border security.

“We’ve been working on the agreement with Cochise County Sheriff’s Office for quite a while, and we see that as a very good first step into border security more broadly, both in the United States on the southern border and the northern border, and then also around the world,” Wajsgras said.

The Multi-Layer Communication System (MLCS) integrates bandwidth from multiple satellite orbits — geostationary (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and low Earth orbit (LEO) — alongside terrestrial and mobile networks to create a seamless communications platform for first responders operating in remote areas.

Starlink satcom and 5G

For Cochise County, the system will combine SpaceX’s Starlink LEO satellite service with 5G cellular networks and a police radio gateway, providing voice and broadband connectivity in previously inaccessible border regions, the company said.

“This integration ensures seamless communication with the Sheriff’s 911 dispatch center, even when officers are up to two miles from their vehicles,” Intelsat said in its announcement.

The Virginia-based company provides MLCS as a fully managed service with end-to-end support.

Ten systems have already been installed in Cochise County police vehicles, with four additional units to be deployed at the 911 dispatch center in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Beyond communications, the platform supports advanced safety features including GPS-based “officer down” alerts and broadband connectivity in areas where traditional infrastructure is limited or nonexistent.

“In my prior life, I had some experience in border security in different parts of the world, so I know the size of the market, what the opportunity space looks like,” added Wajsgras. “So I think that’s going to be a very big deal for the company.”

Though Intelsat has marketed the technology to military agencies, the company has yet to secure a Department of Defense contract for the system.

A company spokesperson indicated that DoD could potentially utilize MLCS as a backup or replacement for existing two-way radio systems at military installations.

The announcement comes as Intelsat undergoes significant corporate changes. In April 2024, global satellite operator SES announced plans to acquire Intelsat for $3.1 billion, with the transaction expected to close in the second half of 2025.

Seventy-four drones were shot down on approach to Moscow in the early hours of March 11, authorities claimed, marking the largest drone attack against Russia's capital during the full-scale war.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces had intercepted a massive strike of 337 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including 91 over Moscow Oblast, 126 over Kursk Oblast, 38 over Bryansk Oblast, and others over the Belgorod, Ryazan, Kaluga, Lipetsk, Oryol, Voronezh, and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

This is the largest number of drones launched against Russia in a single attack during the entire full-scale war.

The strike took place as Ukrainian and U.S. delegations are about to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss possible peace terms with Russia.

Ukrainian officials are reportedly planning to propose a partial truce that would extend to aerial strikes and naval operations.

"Emergency services are working at the site of the fallen debris," Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said, reporting minor damage to a building in the city. The mayor attributed the attack to the Ukrainian military.

"Today at 4 a.m., a massive drone attack against Moscow and Moscow Oblast began," Governor Andrey Vorobyov wrote on his Telegram channel.

Drone wreckage damaged warehouses in the Leninsky district, set fire to 20 cars at a parking lot in Domodedovo, and damaged an apartment building in the town of Ramenskoye, according to the official.

Three people were killed in Moscow Oblast as a result of the strike, Vorobyov claimed. This reportedly included a 38-year-old security guard in the town of Domodedovo south of Moscow and two men who died later in the hospital.

Eighteen others, including three children, were injured in the region, the Health Ministry claimed.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims, and Ukraine's military has not yet commented on the attack.

Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports in Moscow introduced temporary flight restrictions in response to the drone attack, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) reported.

The Dyagilevo airbase in Ryazan Oblast and an unspecified target in Kursk Oblast were also targeted in overnight drone strikes, claimed Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

Kovalenko suggested that the strike could be seen as an "additional signal to Putin that he should also be interested in a ceasefire in the air."

Green Berets Looking For FPV Drones To Help Them Clear Hostile Cave Complexes

March 12, 2025

The command overseeing U.S. special operations forces in the Middle East wants to buy an unspecified number of first-person view (FPV) drones and associated training to help Green Berets clear caves.

U.S. Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) is seeking these weapons to augment the use of military working dogs (MWDs) because it considers drones safer and more effective.

The concern is of increasing relevance as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iran have all utilized caves, tunnels and other underground facilities as attack vectors, weapons and personnel hiding facilities and command and control nodes.

“Currently, the absence of dedicated unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for cave clearing operations forces reliance on Military Working Dogs (MWD) or partner forces, significantly increasing risk to both personnel and mission success,” U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) wrote in a request for a single-source FPV drone contract for SOCCENT posted on the SAM.gov U.S. purchasing portal.

“Caves present confined, complex spaces with limited visibility and unpredictable terrain, increasing the danger to personnel and potentially hindering MWD effectiveness.”

In its justification for the single-source procurement, SOCOM notes that the fast and highly maneuverable FPV drones would provide real-time visual intelligence from inside caves, reducing the risk of having troops inside them when much of the mission can be accomplished by a drone.

In addition, FPV drones with communications relays “enhance coordination between teams inside and outside the cave, facilitating smoother operations and faster response times.”

Operating drones underground, in confined spaces with no line-of-sight, is a challenge the U.S. military has been working to overcome for years.

While the request doesn’t specify what kind of FPV drones are required, SOCOM could very well be looking for a number of options, including those guided by a fiber optic cable, given the difficulties of operating in these areas.

Both Ukraine and Russia have been increasingly using hard-wired fiber optics for control links because the connection cannot be jammed by electronic warfare equipment but also because the link isn’t degraded when flying low over the ground or amongst obstacles and terrain since there is no line-of-sight connectivity requirements.

This allows them to maneuver with full picture and control fidelity inside of buildings and tunnels. You can see examples of this from Ukraine below and in this past story:

There are also small drones that have FPV capability that are tailored to urban environments and can use publicly available cellular data and other wireless networks to provide a connection to its operator.

The introduction to AI will also allow even small drones to be able to navigate at least partially on their own, which could help significantly for operating in tunnels and other areas where the connection can be spotty at best.

Drones with spherical cages around them and other unique alterations also allow them to fly more freely in tight spaces without clipping their propellers. SWAT and other police units have pioneered the use of drones in such circumstances.

In addition to seeking the hardware, SOCOM also wants SOF operators to be trained how to use them, considering how much work it takes to fly them effectively.

SOCOM redacted the cost of the request but said the “investment will significantly improve the safety and efficiency of cave clearing operations, ultimately contributing to mission success and force protection.”

The funding will come from the command’s Fiscal Year 2025 Operations and Maintenance (O&M) account. We’ve reached out to the command for more details and will update this story with any pertinent information provided.

The command’s pitch has redacted the specific location where the drones would be used and the exact unit that would operate them.

However, it does state that they would be operated by ODAs – Operational Detachment Alphas, or A-Teams, the basic building block of the U.S. Army’s Green Berets.

The request also notes that the redacted unit “has limited UAS capabilities and is reliant upon external agencies to provide specialized assets.

The equipment enables ODAs to gain a visual on the risks present on an obscured objective, prior to engagement.

Without this capability, ODAs accept undue risk to the force by entering an objective without detect and defeat capabilities.”

Green Berets have already been training with FPV drones largely based on lessons learned in Ukraine.

Last year, the Army announced it had hired private contractor Flymotion to provide drone and non-standard vehicle training services to a Green Beret A Team from the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), or 10th SFG(A), out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

Since Flymotion received a sole-source deal, Army officials had to provide detailed justifications for not using typical competition contracting processes.

That is the type of process SOCOM is seeking for the FPV drones. You can read more about Green Beret FPV drone training in our in-depth story here.

Though SOCOM has redacted the area where these drones will operate, given that the request is being made on behalf of SOCCENT, it most likely involves operations in the U.S. Central Command Area of Operations (AOR).

That covers 21 nations in the Middle East and Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, and Yemen.

During the so-called war on terror, U.S. and allied troops frequently found themselves battling the Taliban, ISIS and other jihadi groups in caves.

Weaponized FPV drones, which were not in use back then, would be beneficial in any future U.S. SOF underground operation in that region.

The ability to fight underground is such a concern for SOCOM that in 2020 it requested more than $14 million to build a nearly 20,000-square-foot subterranean training site for Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) units like the U.S. Army’s Delta Force and the U.S. Navy’s Naval Special Warfare Development Group, better known as SEAL Team Six.

Israel has gained extensive experience in cave and tunnel fighting against Hamas and Hezbollah. Beyond Gaza and Lebanon, Israel also carried out a raid against an Iranian underground missile facility.

That raid served as a warning to Iran that its underground facilities were not invincible. You can read more about that mission here.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have used FPV drones in Gaza mostly to “survey buildings and underground tunnels, given that this is the most precise method of navigating such spaces,” the Institute for National and Strategic Studies (INSS) noted last year in a report on FPV drone usage.

At the time, however, it was “unknown whether there has been any additional IDF procurement of drones, whether they have been deployed more widely and whether troops have been specially trained in their use for intelligence gathering or attacks, even though the IDF makes widespread use of other kinds of drones,” INSS posited.

However, the Israeli Ministry of Defense Department of Production and Procurement wants to procure thousands of FPV drones from Israeli companies for a wide range of offensive purposes, according to the Israeli Globes media outlet.

The initial solicitation called for 5,000 FPV drones, but that could expand to 20,000, the publication noted.

So far, about 25 Israeli drone suppliers that work with the Ministry of Defense have registered for the tender.

As for SOCOM, the command says only one company is capable of providing the FPV drones and training required.

“After conducting market research and a comprehensive and thorough review of available options,” SOCOM said that it has selected the vendor, but that company’s name is redacted in the SAMs request, which does not state a specific timeline for fulfillment.

Though SOCOM is concerned about the risk of continued reliance on MWDs, it must be noted that no drone has the keen senses of sight and smell like that of a highly trained dog.

These animals have frequently accompanied SOF teams on missions, including the 2019 raid that killed then-ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi in his Syrian compound.

Al-Baghdadi died after running into a dead-end tunnel with three children, chased by an MWD later identified as Conan. The ISIS leader detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and the three children, collapsing the tunnel and injuring Conan.

The U.S. military in general is pushing drones to smaller units, an effort ramped up by lessons from Ukraine, Gaza and elsewhere.

However, American forces are still lagging behind in many ways when it comes to the ubiquity of FPV drones on the battlefield, regardless of the domain.

That SOCOM wants to purchase them, as well as the training it will take to make operators proficient, is another way U.S. special operations forces are working to close that gap.

Holidaying surfer presumed killed in WA shark attack after drone films blood in water

A surfer fatally mauled by a shark at a remote beach in Western Australia was on a six-month holiday with his partner and pet dog.

Victorian man Steven Payne, 37, was attacked on Monday at Wharton beach, east of Esperance, and his remains were yet to be recovered, police said.

Drone footage shot by a witness captured a shark swimming away from a large cloud of blood close to the shore.

A surfboard with bite marks was recovered from the water and emergency services searched for Payne.

“Unfortunately, that search has not recovered the surfer’s body, and I can also confirm that our search is a recovery, not a rescue,” Sen Sgt Christopher Taylor told reporters on Tuesday.

He said Payne, his partner and his “loving dog” were on a six-month travelling holiday when he was attacked.

“I’m led to believe they were four to five weeks into that holiday, which obviously has come to an abrupt end,” Taylor said. “It is heartbreaking.”

Payne’s family were distraught and trying to come to terms with what happened, Taylor said.

“The whole community of Esperance feels the pain,” he said. “We’ve been through this before and it hurts a lot.”

Payne’s presumed death is the fourth fatal shark attack since 2017 in the area, about 800km south of Perth.

THIS is the horror moment an attack drone loaded with a deadly bomb strikes an enemy truck during a clash between two Mexican drug cartels.

Footage shows the drone hovering above the white pickup truck before hitting the vehicle and exploding inside.

The clash seen in the footage is reportedly between Mexico's El Tena group striking an armored vehicle operated by the dangerous Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNC) cartel.

The drones were understood to be loaded with C4, an explosive reserved for military use, with additional ammunition of pellets to cause further damage.

There has been a stark increase in the use of drones to fight rival cartel groups in Mexico.

It comes as the leader of CNJC Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, is said to be "preparing" the cartel to face Trump.

CNJC was founded in 2009, and its ruthless rise to global dominance has left bodies and screams in its wake - ripping out victims' hearts, dissolving their bodies in barrels of acid, and even targeting pregnant women.

The cartel's drug trafficking empire now reaches all corners of the globe, despite ferocious competition from other cartels in Mexico and increasingly desperate efforts from international authorities to hold them back.

The gangsters are now buying high-caliber weapons, according to journalist and podcaster Anabel Hernández as they prepare to face down the US military.

One of the first executive orders that Trump signed included designating gangs from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and El Salvador as foreign terrorist organisations.

It could give his government more powers to go after the criminal organisations with military strikes or to forcefully remove their members from the US.

Hernández said: "After Trump announced his war against the Mexican cartels, it [CJNG] is the organization that is preparing itself the fastest with powerful weapons to fight.

"Although the leader of the CJNG claims to have arrangements with the Government of Mexico, he does not rule out that there may be covert operations by the Trump administration."

Hernández claimed that the CJNG is now monitoring Mexican airports, cities, and even US consulates in the country.

The cartel appears to be worried that US military special forces could be deployed in Mexico as Trump tries to crush the gangs.

There is also a $15 million (£12 million) bounty on the head of El Mencho and legal proceedings open against him in Washington DC.

Security expert Professor Anthony Glees told The Sun that Trump may launch airstrikes in Mexico to "wage a war" against the lethal cartels that pose a threat to his "Fortress America".

The largest cartels are based in Mexico and Colombia and according to a US Congress report, pose the "greatest organized crime threat" to America.

Glees said America's enemies "will tremble at what he is able to do", in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia or El Salvador, where the most prominent gangs conduct far-reaching drug operations.

Previously, footage emerged showing dozens of uniformed gunmen posing with military-grade weapons near armoured pickup trucks emblazoned with the initials of the Jalisco drug cartel.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced today that it has stopped placement of unaccompanied alien children in shelters operated by Southwest Key Programs, Inc. (Southwest Key) and has moved all children there to other shelters.

“This administration is working fearlessly to end the tragedy of human trafficking and other abuses of unaccompanied alien children who enter the country illegally,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“For too long, pernicious actors have exploited such children both before and after they enter the United States. Today’s action is a significant step toward ending this appalling abuse of innocents.”

Southwest Key has operated 27 residential shelters that provide temporary living arrangements for unaccompanied alien children in Texas, Arizona, and California, and has been the largest provider for such shelters for unaccompanied alien children in the United States.

Southwest Key operates such shelters through grants from the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Unaccompanied alien children are minors who enter the United States without parents or other legal guardians and without lawful immigration status in the United States.

In July 2024, the Department of Justice filed a civil lawsuit against Southwest Key, alleging that it had, through its employees, subjected unaccompanied alien children in its care to unlawful sexual harassment and abuse.

Out of continuing concerns relating to these placements, HHS has decided to stop placement of unaccompanied alien children in Southwest Key facilities, and to review its grants with the organization.

In view of HHS’ action, the Department of Justice has dismissed its lawsuit against Southwest Key.

“Securing our border and protecting children from abuse are among the most critical missions of the Department of Justice and the Trump administration,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

“Under the border policies of the previous administration, bad actors were incentivized to exploit children and break our laws: this ends now.”

Parham claims that Pelletier then gave an envelope to a neighbor, which she believed to be full of cash - after which he took her and another plaintiff at gunpoint to his him, restrained them, refused to let them contact an attorney, and made various moves to cover up the kidnapping - as opposed to offering to take the woman home, call an ambulance, take her to the hospital, or help retrieve her belongings from the home she had fled, the filing claims.

In response to the allegation, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen requested that the Maui County Police Commission put Pelletier on administrative leave while the investigation remains ongoing, Hawaii News Now reports.

While the allegations in the amended complaint remain unproven, they are serious in nature and involve claims of alleged criminal conduct.

As with any such legal matter, due process must be observed, but the existence of these allegations alone presents concerns regarding public trust and the effective functioning of the department.

Pelletier released a statement on Tuesday calling the allegations "completely false," adding that he has not been "formally served with any legal paperwork."

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

Physicist maintains “alien” material found on seafloor

A fiery meteor broke up over the South Pacific Ocean on 8 January 2014, tracked by the US Department of Defense. Loeb’s team launched a controversial mission in 2023 to recover it.

But researchers led by John Hopkins University scientists have questioned seismic data linked to the meteorite.

As Cosmos reported yesterday, the John Hopkins-led research says that the seismic signal was not caused by the meteorite at all, but by a truck passing by the seismic station on Manus Island where the signals were detected.

Loeb, however, has responded, pointing Cosmos to a preprint paper, saying that “the expedition to retrieve the materials … was not dictated by the [seismic] data studied by Fernando et al. (2024)”.

He says the expedition’s location is in line with a “location box” determined by an assessment of the meteor’s velocity and trajectory by NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) and that the seismometer data was only considered to “test consistency” with the CNEOS location box.

In any case, experts are sceptical that Loeb’s team uncovered material from an interstellar object. They say it is more likely that its composition is the result of pollution from Earth-based materials.

While Loeb says his team’s analysis of the chemistry of the spherules rules this out, other physicists say that proof of interstellar origin would be in dating the material and finding that it is older than the Sun.

Update(1210ET): On Wednesday President Zelensky shut the door on territorial concessions, awkwardly at a moment Ukraine has just agreed to a US plan for a 30-day ceasefire intended to pave the way for extended peace negotiations. An initial statement from the Kremlin said that Putin likely to eventually agree to truce but with own terms as Moscow "studies" the Trump-sponsored proposal hammered out during the Tuesday Jeddah talks.

"We are fighting for our independence. Therefore, we will not recognize any occupied territories as Russia's. This is a fact," Zelensky said in the fresh comments.

"Our people have fought for this, our heroes died. How many injured, how many passed. No one will forget about it… This is the most important red line. We will not let anyone forget about this crime against Ukraine."

But Russia's red line in any near-future negotiations will be to demand recognition of the Russian Federations sovereign control over the four easter territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions - which President Putin has previously referred to as "our citizens forever."

As for Zelensky's new proclamation that he won't cede territory, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters just after the Ukraine-US talks in Saudi Arabia that discussions with Kiev's delegations included "territorial concessions" as part of a negotiated settlement. The suggestion from the US side is that Ukraine showed openness and willingness on this question. So either the two allies can't get on the same age (which is no surprise), or else Zelensky is trying to tank these negotiation efforts before they ever get off the ground, also as the White House has pressed Kiev to hold new presidential elections.

Arrested Container Ship Captain That Hit US Tanker Is Russian National

The captain of the container ship that collided with a U.S.-flagged tanker carrying jet fuel for the U.S. military off the coast of England has been identified as a Russian national and taken into custody over suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Maritime experts are searching for answers to how the Portuguese-flagged Solong container ship, equipped with modern navigation equipment, failed to avoid U.S.-registered tanker Stena Immaculate off the East Yorkshire coast on Monday morning.

BBC News said that local area police have launched a criminal investigation into the collision and arrested a 59-year-old Russian national piloting the ship at the time of the incident. He was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

"Detectives are continuing to conduct extensive lines of inquiry alongside partners in connection with the collision," Humberside Police said, adding they were also working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency on the investigation.

Both the container ship and tanker ignited after the collision on Monday. Coastguard officials said 36 people were rescued from the vessels, and one remains unaccounted for, presumably dead.

Lawsuit Alleges Girl Scouts Sold Cookies Containing Heavy Metals, Pesticides

The Girl Scouts allegedly violated laws when selling cookies containing heavy metals and pesticides, according to a new lawsuit.

The cookies “are contaminated with dangerous heavy metals, including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury … and pesticides, including glyphosate,” according to the suit, which was filed on March 10 in federal court in New York.

Amy Mayo, the plaintiff, is seeking class action status in the litigation.

Mayo says she purchased Girl Scout cookies on numerous occasions, including three boxes on Jan. 23.

The suit points to a study conducted by the consumer organization GMOScience. Testing done by the organization found heavy metals and pesticides in cookies sold by the Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scouts said in a February blog post that their cookies “are made with ingredients that adhere to food safety standards set by the FDA and other relevant authorities,” referring to the Food and Drug Administration.

The organization said that nearly all foods may contain trace amounts of contaminants like heavy metals as well as pesticides such as glyphosate.

“Our bakers have confirmed that the levels reported do not pose a food safety concern to our customers,” the organization said.

Mayo said that additional testing also detected toxins such as lead and mercury in the cookies.

Trump’s declaration follows a completely insane statement from health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr which makes the targeting of pro-Palestine protests much more explicit.

“Anti-Semitism — like racism — is a spiritual and moral malady that sickens societies and kills people with lethalities comparable to history’s most deadly plagues,” said Kennedy. “In recent years, the censorship and false narratives of woke cancel culture have transformed our great universities into greenhouses for this deadly and virulent pestilence. Leaving aside Kennedy’s ridiculous claim that antisemitism “kills people with lethalities comparable to history’s most deadly plagues” in modern times and all the weird mental contortions he’s performing to turn this into a Health and Human Services issue, conflating pro-Palestine protests with antisemitism and then claiming it needs to be eliminated as a “pestilence” squarely contradicts Kennedy’s asserted support for “speech freedom and open debate.”

When the Texas House impeached now-suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton last month, lawmakers relied heavily on allegations made by four men who were fired from top jobs at Paxton’s agency.

The four fired executives filed a lawsuit in November 2020, arguing that the Texas Whistleblower Act protected them from retaliation after reporting to law enforcement their belief that Paxton had improperly helped his friend and political donor, Austin real estate investor Nate Paul.

The lawsuit also gave the public a first look at their allegations against Paxton, saying he improperly pressured agency employees to get involved in legal disputes to benefit Paul and his businesses.

In return, they said, Paul helped fund a renovation of Paxton’s Austin home and employed a woman who was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with Paxton. Paxton is married to state Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney.

Here is a look at the four whistleblowers, what they did in the attorney general’s office and what they claim Paxton did that led them to report his actions to authorities.

Paxton recruited Blake Brickman to the attorney general’s office in February 2020. After a career in Republican politics and working as a lawyer in private practice, Brickman served as Paxton’s deputy attorney general for policy and strategy initiatives.

From 2015-19,Brickman was chief of staff to Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, considered one of the most conservative governors in the country. Earlier in his career, Brickman was chief of staff for Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning and a campaign manager for U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, also a Republican.

John Hodgson, a staunchly conservative Kentucky state representative who served with Brickman in Bevin’s administration, lauded Brickman for his conservative principles.

“We worked together every day for four years fighting for ways to make government smaller and more accountable,” Hodgson said in a statement provided by Brickman’s lawyer. “Blake is a fearless defender of the rule of law and conservative values.”

Brickman pushed back against Paxton’s desire to get the agency’s Charitable Trust Division involved in a legal dispute between Paul’s businesses and the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, the whistleblower lawsuit said. The Austin nonprofit had sued Paul’s business for fraud, alleging that Paul failed to make financial disclosures about its investments.

At Paxton’s direction, Brickman reviewed the case and concluded that the agency should not get involved, particularly in ways helpful to Paul, because the Charitable Trust Division was intended to help nonprofits. Paxton disregarded the advice and pressured agency lawyers to intervene in the lawsuit, delaying the sale of some of Paul’s properties to pay the nonprofit, according to investigators hired by the House General Investigating Committee.

Brickman was fired on Oct. 20, 2020, for “insubordination,” just a few weeks after reporting Paxton’s alleged crimes to the FBI.

Several months earlier, Paxton praised Brickman at a monthly meeting and gave him a copy of “Scalia Speaks,” a collection of speeches by the late conservative U.S. Supreme Court justice. Inside the book, Paxton had inscribed, “Blake, I am so grateful you joined our team at the Texas AG’s office. I am confident that you will continue to make a difference for our office and all of Texas.”

US Resumes Military Aid, Intelligence Sharing for Ukraine

The US lifted the pause after Ukraine said it was ready to accept a 30-day ceasefire if Russia agreed

The Trump administration has lifted its pause on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine following talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

US officials said the move came after Ukraine signaled it was open to a 30-day ceasefire if Russia agreed.

“Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation,” the US and Ukraine said in a joint statement.

“The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace. The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine,” the statement added.

The joint statement also said that “both countries’ presidents agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources to expand Ukraine’s economy and guarantee Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and security.”

President Trump said on Tuesday that US and Russian officials could meet in the coming days, which was affirmed by Russia’s Foreign Ministry. Trump also said that he planned on speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.

So far, there’s been no public reaction from Moscow about the idea of a ceasefire. Putin has previously rejected the idea of a temporary ceasefire, saying in January that he wouldn’t accept “some kind of respite for regrouping forces and rearmament with the aim of subsequently continuing the conflict” and that he wanted a “long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people, all nations living in this region.”

Moscow also has the momentum on the battlefield on its side as its forces continue to make gains in eastern Ukraine and are pushing Ukrainian troops out of Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

Former Bevin chief of staff fired by Texas AG after his whistleblower bribery allegation

The chief of staff for former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin has been fired from his new position by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, weeks after his whistleblower allegation accusing Paxton of bribery.

Blake Brickman, who served as Bevin's chief of staff until he left office in December, was hired in February by Paxton to serve as Texas' deputy attorney general for policy and strategic initiatives.

Three weeks ago, Brickman and six other top aides to Paxton in the attorney general's office notified the agency of their belief that he committed criminal offenses related to bribery and abuse of office, asking federal law enforcement to investigate.

The Texas Tribune obtained internal emails showing Brickman and others accused Paxton of abusing his power to serve the financial interests of a major political donor, though Paxton has denied the allegations and dismissed the whistleblowers as “rogue employees.”

Paxton's top aide immediately resigned and two others were placed on leave, while Brickman and another whistleblower were fired by Paxton on Tuesday.

Brickman has not yet responded to media outlets asking for his comment on the firing.

During his four years as Bevin's chief of staff in Kentucky, Brickman was known as a fierce defender of his boss and attack dog against his critics.

Brickman, the grandson of former Democratic Gov. Ned Breathitt, had worked for two decades in Kentucky politics and government for Republican elected officials, including the late Sen. Jim Bunning and current U.S. Rep. Andy Barr.

Grassley Probes Contractors Who Made Billions On Disastrous ‘Unaccompanied Alien Children’ Program

Senator Chuck Grassley, the Senate’s most experienced and tenacious investigator, finally has the attention of the corporations that took more than $9 billion from taxpayers to house illegal immigrant children in the United States.

During the Biden administration, the contractors refused to answer Congress’s questions even as hundreds of thousands of “unaccompanied minors” disappeared. In some cases, children were allegedly sexually abused by contractor staff. In other cases, contractors dropped them off to live with unvetted sponsors who refused to answer the government’s calls afterward.

Grassley said the missing children must be located — and that contractors will no longer get away with taking taxpayer money while snubbing oversight. Now that Republicans control the White House and Congress, the Iowa Republican sent document demands to 23 contractors, according to copies of the letters obtained by The Daily Wire. The letters largely reissued the same demands he sent a year ago, which he says were met with stonewalling.

“It’s unacceptable for recipients of taxpayer funding to refuse to provide information to Congress about the use of those funds. And it’s beyond unacceptable for these federally-funded entities to refuse to answer questions designed to determine whether they protected children,” he said in letters to companies such as Cherokee Federal, Southwest Key Programs, and Asset Protection & Security Services LP.

The letters ask questions like “what actions, if any, did you take to ensure that no children would be sponsored or placed in potential situations where there may be signs of criminal activity, including human trafficking? … Where questions require entire case files or contracts to answer, those case files and contracts must be provided.”

In what could be one of the largest scandals in American history, the “unaccompanied alien children” (UAC) program allowed illegal immigrant children to cross the border and remain in the United States as long as they came without their parents.

That created a class of people who were exceedingly vulnerable to exploitation by labor or sex traffickers: They didn’t speak English, they were helpless children, they had a desperate need to make money to repay coyotes who brought them here. And local and state authorities didn’t know they existed, meaning they could be killed, abused, or disappeared, and no one would know.

Children were held in centers then transported by contractors to live with “sponsors,” who were often other illegal immigrants who did not have to be relatives, and who the government did not have to see in person before handing off the children.

President Trump has given every indication that he is as concerned with Israel’s interest as he is with the interests of MAGA Americans. I have expressed the hope that Trump’s sickening kowtowing to Israel is a strategy to keep the Israel Lobby off his back until he can deal with other opponents who stand in the way of his domestic agenda. I still have this hope, but it has been shaken by the Trump administration’s sacrifice of constitutionally protected free speech in order to protect Israel from criticism.

Last Friday the Epoch Times reported that the Trump administration had cancelled $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University for failing to act on allegations of anti-semitism. The Trump administration’s “Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism” consists of the departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Resources, and the General Services Administration. The members of this task force are well positioned to ingratiate themselves with Israel, which can easily result in well-enumerated positions after their time in government is over.

What does the Trump task force mean by “anti-semitism”? It means protests against Israel’s destruction of Palestine. It means that no matter how horrific Israel’s war crimes and no matter the ICC’s indictment of Netanyahu, for students and faculty to protest genocide or mass murder, if Israel is the perpetrator, is “anti-semitic.” It is OK to protest against other countries, but not against Israel.

Protests against Israel’s actions are equated with harassment and persecution of Jewish students at Columbia. This equation implies that Jewish Americans identify with Israel and not with the United States. Does an immigrant from England feel harassed and persecuted if Americans protest against England? President Trump has branded protests against Israel “illegal protests.” In other words, Trump is saying that the exercise of free speech if Israel is the target is illegal because it is anti-semitic. Protesters can say whatever they wish about Americans, Russia, China, Muslims, and Palestinians, but not about Israelis.

Trump is also guilty of conflating Israeli citizens with American Jewish citizens. If Trump applied his Israeli standards to all ethnicities, no one would be able to express any criticism and protest any action by any government.

The governor has long maintained he was unaware of allegations against Vereb, an explanation that’s been met with backlash.

The Shapiro administration’s handling of a sexual misconduct complaint against a cabinet member, and one reporter’s request to know more about the investigation behind it, may cost taxpayers a lot of money.

In a court transcript obtained by The Center Square, an attorney representing the Office of the Governor says the state deleted internal emails sent and received over an eight-day period by a deputy aide in its Legislative Affairs Office who reported the inappropriate behavior.

“That, frankly, should not be surprising that an account of a departed employee would be disposed of in accordance with the records retention schedules,” says Thomas Howell, the administration’s attorney, during a Feb. 12 hearing in Commonwealth Court. “Those retention schedules are public, and they establish that, you know, your general emails are deleted as soon as they’re no longer necessary.”

Thomas Breth, an attorney for Broad + Liberty, said during the hearing that emails from former employees are kept between three and eight years. The ones in question date back only two years.

The Center Square spoke with one of the attorneys representing the reporter who requested the communications. They said that the “stunning” admission has now generated a request for sanctions against the administration for violating state laws dictating records retention.

The ongoing dispute dates back to late 2023 when the news organization filed a public records request for the emails, along with other internal documents, that were sent between March 2, 2023, and March 10, 2023 – crucially, the last week the aide worked after filing the complaint and resigning.

The complaint alleged Mike Vereb, Shapiro’s former secretary of Legislative Affairs, retaliated against the staffer after reporting his inappropriate comments in February of that same year. Vereb resigned six months later, just weeks before a $295,000 taxpayer-funded settlement became public.

An attorney involved in the proceedings told The Center Square that if sanctions against the administration are imposed, it will have to cover Broad + Liberty’s court fees.

When asked about the issue during a news conference on Tuesday, Gov. Josh Shapiro said he hadn’t read Broad + Liberty’s reporting about it.

“I didn’t read the story and I'm confident my administration follows all document retention policies,” he said.

Columbia was the epicenter of a massive protest movement across university campuses nationwide last year. It is estimated that at least eight percent of all American college students participated in demonstrations denouncing the genocidal attack on Gaza and calling on educational institutions to divest from Israel. “ICE proudly apprehended and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a radical foreign pro-Hamas student on the campus of Columbia University. This is the first arrest of many to come,” President Trump stated. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Trump’s ominous threat, announcing, “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.” In another clear threat, the Trump administration moved to cancel $400 million in funding to Columbia University, citing the institution’s failure to sufficiently crack down on “antisemitic” incidents on campus.

The primary Presidential campaign came to Laurel County in the winter of 1988.

"I think part of that honor was that we were named Bush, and he was named Bush," said E.R. Rudder with the Bush Fire Department.

Rudder shook hands with the then-Vice President, George H. W. Bush, who later that year became the 41st President.

"The thing that strikes me most is that all say he was a genuinely good man," Rudder remembered.

Bush spoke right outside the fire department but with an elementary school right across the street, one can imagine the monumental day it was for those small school children.

"I don't think so, as a second-grader then, I grasped how big of a deal it was," said Elizabeth Cupp.

Cupp was a second-grader when Bush came to the fire department. She is now the principal of the new Bush Elementary.

"I don't remember what he said, just that there was a really big positive energy and he was really nice," Cupp remembered.

The school children did get quite the lesson that day, but one might say Bush learned a bit about small-town America as well.

"And I am told that this whole spirit of volunteerism that is so reflected, perhaps epitomized by the fire department, is community-wide," the former President said in 1988.

People who were there said Bush seemed like one of them, an ordinary guy, who anyone could talk to and relate to.

Bush returned to Laurel County four years later when he was President. That time, he spoke to high school students.

Dignitaries from around the world attended Wednesday's state funeral, including Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.

"George Bush, the 41st president, was a class act. he really was. He was a man of grace and dignity. And he represented America well. And it was a privilege to be here and pay my respects," said Bevin.

Canada’s incoming prime minister says he’ll meet Trump if Canadian sovereignty is respected

TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday he’s ready to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump if he respects Canadian sovereignty and is open to talk about a common approach to trade.

Trump has declared a trade war on his northern neighbor and continues to call for Canada to become the 51st state, a position that has infuriated Canadians. Trump has threatened economic coercion in his annexation threats and suggested Tuesday the border is a fictional line.

“I am ready to sit down with President Trump at the appropriate time under a position where there is respect for Canadian sovereignty and we are working for a common approach, a much more comprehensive approach for trade,” Carney said.

Carney, who will be sworn in in the coming days, spoke to reporters at a steel factory in Hamilton, Ontario after Trump officially increased tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25%. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel and aluminum to the U.S.

Carney said workers in both countries will be better off when “the greatest economic and security partnership in the world is renewed, relaunched. That is possible.”

He added he respects Trump’s concerns for American workers and about fentanyl.

“Today is a difficult day for Canada and the industry because of these unjustified tariffs that have been put on,” Carney said.

Canada responded with its own countermeasures. It plans to impose retaliatory tariffs of 29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.7 billion) starting Thursday in response to the U.S. taxes on the metals. Canada’s new tariffs would be on steel and aluminum products, as well as U.S. goods including computers, sports equipment and water heaters worth CA$14.2 billion ($9.9 billion).

“We don’t want to do this because we believe in open borders and free and fair trade but we are doing this in response,” Carney said.

Canada’s new tariffs are in addition to its 25% counter tariffs on CA$30 billion ($20.8 billion) of imports from the U.S. that were put in place on March 4 in response to other Trump import taxes that he partially delayed by a month.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Wednesday this is now the second round of unjustified tariffs leveled against Canada.

“The excuse for the first round was exaggerated claims about our border. We addressed all the concerns raised by the U.S.,” Joly said.

“The latest excuse is national security despite the fact that Canada’s steel and aluminum adds to America’s security. All the while there is a threat of further and broader tariffs on April 2 still looming.”

Joly said the excuses for those tariffs shift every day.

“The only constant in this unjustifiable trade war seems to be President Trump’s talk of annexing our country through economic coercion. Yesterday he called our a border a fictional line and repeated his disrespectful 51st state rhetoric,” Joly said.

The U.S. president has given a variety of explanations for his antagonism of Canada. He has said that his separate 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada, some of which have been suspended for a month, are about fentanyl smuggling and objections to Canada putting high taxes on dairy imports that penalize U.S. farmers. He also continued to call for Canada to become part of the United States.

“Mr. Carney is a serious person, a serious man, and he’ll engage only if there are serious talks,” Joly said.

Medvedchuk cited the recent talks between Zelensky and Trump in the Oval Office, which escalated into an unprecedented public confrontation, as proof that there is a pervasive culture among Kiev's pro-Western political factions that prioritizes self-interest. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance ended up accusing the Ukrainian leader of disrespectful behavior, a lack of gratitude, and an unwillingness to pursue peace.

“America’s problem is thatit's not just Zelensky who doesn't understand how he disrespected Trump, but most of his entourage doesn't… Ukraine's pro-Western politicians are not accustomed at all to considering the interests of others,” Medvedchuk argued.

He went on to claim that “Zelensky’s Ukraine is raising citizens to be spoiled, hysterical, illiterate, infantile and irresponsible; they believe that everyone owes them, and that they never owe anything to anybody in return.”

Medvedchuk was leader ofthe Opposition Platform – For Life party, formerly the second-largest group in the Ukrainian parliament, until his arrest in April 2022. The party was subsequently banned, and Medvedchuk was sent to Russia in September of that year in exchange for several POWs. He foundedthe Other Ukraine movement in 2023and acts as chairman of its council. In January, Zelensky imposed sanctions against him.
