US Plans Large Deportation Flight to El Salvador

The U.S. military is planning a large deportation flight to El Salvador to be carried out under the Alien Enemies Act, ABC News reported on Friday.

News of the deportation flight comes as attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union representing several Venezuelan migrants say their clients are being held at the Bluebonnet detention center in Anson, Texas, and believe they are at "imminent risk" of being deported to El Salvador.

"Petitioners have learned that officers at Bluebonnet have distributed notices under the Alien Enemies Act, in English only, that designate Venezuelan men for removal under the AEA, and have told the men that the removals are imminent and will happen tonight or tomorrow," attorneys from the ACLU wrote in a filed statement.

In March, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg blocked the Trump administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act, which the president invoked as justification for the rapid deportation of members of the Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua.

Boasberg called the actions of the Trump White House "incredibly troubling and problematic," adding that he administration engaged in "an unprecedented and expanded use of an act that has been used … in the War of 1812, World War I and World War II, when there was no question there was a declaration of war and who the enemy was."

Last week, in a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court granted the Trump administration's request to lift the temporary restraining order issued by Boasberg but noted that those targeted for removal under the act are entitled to challenge their removal.

The declarations from the group's attorney were filed after U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix in Texas denied a Friday request for a temporary restraining order saying that the ACLU "failed to meet their burden to show a substantial threat of imminent, irreparable injury."

"In the hours after this Court's order on the [temporary restraining order)] Attorney Brown's client, F.G.M., was approached by ICE officers, accused of being a member of Tren de Aragua, and told to sign papers in English," attorneys for the ACLU wrote. "ICE told him the papers "were coming from the President, and that he will be deported even if he did not sign it."

When asked for comment regarding the ACLU filing, Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said, "For the safety of our law enforcement, we cannot disclose details about upcoming removal and deportation operations."

Toothpaste widely contaminated with lead and other metals, US research finds

Most of 51 brands tested, including those for children, contained dangerous heavy metal

Toothpaste can be widely contaminated with lead and other dangerous heavy metals, new research shows.

Most of 51 brands of toothpaste tested for lead contained the dangerous heavy metal, including those for children or those marketed as green. The testing, conducted by Lead Safe Mama, also found concerning levels of highly toxic arsenic, mercury and cadmium in many brands.

About 90% of toothpastes contained lead, 65% contained arsenic, just under half contained mercury, and one-third had cadmium. Many brands contain a number of the toxins.

The highest levels detected violated the state of Washington’s limits, but not federal limits. The thresholds have been roundly criticized by public health advocates for not being protective – no level of exposure to lead is safe, the federal government has found.

“It’s unconscionable – especially in 2025,” said Tamara Rubin, Lead Safe Mama’s founder. “What’s really interesting to me is that no one thought this was a concern.”

Lead can cause cognitive damage to children, harm the kidneys and cause heart disease, among other issues. Lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic are all carcinogens.

Rubin first learned that lead-contaminated ingredients were added to toothpaste about 12 years ago while working with families that had children with high levels of the metal in their blood. The common denominator among them was a brand of toothpaste, Earthpaste, that contained lead.

Last year she detected high levels in some toothpaste using an XRF lead detection tool. The levels were high enough to raise concern, and she crowdfunded with readers to send popular brands to an independent laboratory for testing.

Among those found to contain the toxins were Crest, Sensodyne, Tom’s of Maine, Dr Bronner’s, Davids, Dr Jen and others.

So far, none of the companies Lead Safe Mama checked have said they will work to get lead out of their product, Rubin said. Several sent her cease-and-desist letters, which she said she ignored, but also posted on her blog.

Some companies have defended themselves, often claiming that lead is found in trace levels throughout the environment and is impossible to avoid. Others have said the levels Rubin found are not concerning.

The federal Baby Food Safety Act of 2024, which is stalled in Congress, calls for lead limits in kids’ food of 10 ppb. California’s limit on lead in baby food is six ppb, but neither includes toothpaste.

Most toothpastes exceeded those thresholds.

The FDA’s current lead limit for fluoride-free toothpastes is 10,000 ppb, and 20,000 ppb for fluoride toothpastes. None exceeded the FDA limits.

The state of Washington recently enacted a law with 1,000 ppb limits – several exceeded that and have been reported, Rubin said, but companies have time to get in compliance with the new rules.

The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Crest’s parent company, Procter & Gamble.

Rubin said the contamination seems to lie in some ingredients added to toothpaste, including hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate and bentonite clay. Hydroxyapatite is extracted from cow bone and added because it allegedly helps teeth absorb calcium, though Rubin said she doubts it does. Calcium carbonate is added to help remove stains from teeth. Bentonite clay is a cleaning agent.

Those with the highest levels all had bentonite clay. Meanwhile, Rubin’s testing of hydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate as individual ingredients showed concerning levels of lead and other metals, suggesting those are the source.

Several children’s toothpastes, like Dr Brown’s Baby Toothpaste, did not test positive for any metals and did not contain the ingredients in question.

The story was amended on 17 April 2025 to correct errors on regulatory limits of lead in toothpaste and other products.

Trump Station? Feds take control of Penn Station rebuild, kick MTA off the project

President Donald Trump is taking over the reconstruction of Penn Station and kicking the MTA off the project, federal transportation officials announced Thursday.

The move was laid out in a letter to MTA Chair Janno Lieber from Federal Railroad Administration Chief Counsel Kyle Fields, who said the work will instead be overseen by Amtrak, which owns Penn Station.“There is no reason to delegate leadership of this important project,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy wrote in a statement.

“President Trump has made it clear: the days of reckless spending and blank checks are over,” Duffy wrote.“New York City deserves a Penn Station that reflects America’s greatness and is safe and clean. The MTA’s history of inefficiency, waste and mismanagement also meant that a new approach is needed. By putting taxpayers first, we’re ensuring every dollar is spent wisely to create a transit hub all Americans can take pride in.”

The MTA has for years planned to reconstruct Penn Station without relocating Madison Square Garden, which sits above the rail hub. The agency has also worked with Amtrak and NJ Transit on a controversial plan to expand the station, which would allow for more passenger train service in and out of Manhattan.

Now, the feds want to combine both projects.“The necessary planning for reconstruction and expansion of Penn Station will be conducted under a single grant, led by Amtrak,” Fields’ letter states.

The move will allow Amtrak and the federal government to pursuea developer for the reconstruction and potential expansion of the station. Gov. Kathy Hochul said the move takes the reconstruction off New York's plate and puts it squarely in Trump's lap. (she will try to take credit)

“In multiple meetings with President Trump, I requested that the federal government fund the long-overdue overhaul of Penn Station," Hochul wrote in a statement. "Clearly that effort has been successful, and I want to thank the president and Secretary Duffy for taking on the sole responsibility to deliver the beautiful new $7 billion station that New Yorkers deserve. This is a major victory for New Yorkers, and the use of federal funds will save New York taxpayers $1.3 billion that would have otherwise been necessary for this project.”

MTA Chair Janno Lieber in a statement noted the MTA is "the major leaseholder in the station" and said he expects the agency "to participate in the administration’s and Amtrak’s efforts to ensure future plans meet the needs of everyone who uses it.”

Tom Wright, president of the Regional Plan Association, said he would support the federal takeover of the project if it meant the work could actually advance after years of delays.

“This isn't a surprise to those of us who've been following this for a couple years now,” said Tom Wright, president of the Regional Plan Association.

“The MTA had real success with the renovation of the Long Island Rail Road concourse, but things haven't been moving forward lately… from my perspective, Penn Station is owned by Amtrak, the federal government, and it makes sense for them to be leading the renovation plans.”

Wright was also open to the idea of renaming the train hub after Trump “if that’s what it takes to get a great Penn Station.”The federal government's takeover of the project comes a month after Trump’s allies released a proposal to overhaul Penn Station by moving Madison Square Garden across Seventh Avenue and rebuilding the rail hub with a neoclassical design.

The proposal was backed by the National Civic Art Society, which is supported by major Trump donor Thomas Klingenstein who published an essay last month titled, “Only Trump Can Make Penn Station Great Again.”

Justin Shubow, the president of the National Civic Art Society, said he supported the federal takeover of the project.

“We are delighted that the administration is taking charge,” he said in a statement to Gothamist. “Only President Trump can get a new Penn Station built after generations of politicians have failed. It is also heartening news since as President Trump has proven he understands the beauty and popularity of classical civic buildings.We hope he will make Penn Station classical again.”

Hochul last month said she would not support an expansion of Penn Station that would require the demolition of a city block — something Amtrak and NJ Transit officials have supported.

“ I think that there is a reason to be cautiously optimistic,” said Layla Law-Gisiko, president of the City Club of New York, who has been a leading opponent of the expansion project. “What matters here is really what the goal and objective is for these proposals. If it is simply cosmetic, it'll be missing the mark. If it is to truly improve and upgrade the capacity and the connectivity of the region, I think that could be a very significant improvement.”

Hochul has in recent months said she’s been in negotiations with Trump not only over the future of Penn Station, but also the future of the MTA’s congestion pricing tolls, which the president aims to shut down.

The biological mother of accused Florida State University shooter Phoenix Ikner kidnapped him and fled to Norway amid a bitter custody battle a decade before the deadly shooting, court documents reveal.

Anne-Mari Eriksen took her then-11-year-old son to the Scandinavian nation in March 2015 in violation of the custody agreement she had with Christopher Ikner — after telling the father she was taking him to South Florida for spring break, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office viewed by The Post.

Eriksen and Phoenix Ikner — who at the time went by his birth name, Christian Gunnar Eriksen — both have American and Norwegian citizenship.

“Instead of staying in South Florida, the defendant allegedly fled the country with him in violation of their custody agreement,” the affidavit stated.

Christopher Ikner only discovered his son had been kidnapped when the 11-year-old spilled the beans during a phone call with his dad.

Eriksen — who had custody rights, though the agreement stipulated that she could not take him from the country without advance notification — said she would return the boy to the US and his dad on March 27, but failed to do so, according to the affidavit.

Christopher Ikner then quickly became worried and alerted authorities, saying his son “has developmental delays and special needs,” which he feared would not be taken care of without access to his regular doctors.

The affidavit said Phoenix Ikner was “on medication for several health and mental issues, to include a growth hormone disorder and ADHD.”

Amazon cannot function without China. That is not a dramatic statement. It is reality. The marketplace Americans treat as a digital department store is more like a giant vending machine filled in advance by the factories of Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong.

Amazon says 71 percent of goods sold through its platform come from China. That figure is a floor, not a ceiling. Many products stamped with labels from Vietnam, Mexico, India, or even the United States still rely on Chinese parts or Chinese machinery to be made at all. The dependence is far deeper than origin tags or logistics charts suggest.

Removing China from Amazon’s supply chain is not a simple trade shift. It is economic disarmament. It is asking to reroute the entire circulatory system of American consumer life while expecting the pulse to stay strong. That simply will not happen. Try removing semiconductors from tech or wheat from bread and see what follows.

Politicians talk tough about decoupling, but they do not have an answer for what comes next. If you want to punish China by cutting off imports, you are not hitting China where it lives. Only 12 percent of China’s exports go to the United States and those exports make up just 2 percent of China’s GDP. This is a bruise to Beijing, not a break. They will find other buyers. ASEAN, Latin America, Africa, and Europe are ready.

But for the United States, the pain cuts deeper. Those same Chinese goods are often imported cheaply, marked up several times, and counted toward American GDP as retail activity. That multiplier vanishes if the goods stop arriving.

Try ordering a simple plastic phone stand. On Amazon, you pay fourteen dollars. The item probably cost two to manufacture. Cut China out, and now the cost of that stand jumps to five, maybe six dollars at the factory level. That means it lands in your cart for thirty, if it’s available at all.

Consumers lose. Retailers lose. And inflation, already a political third rail, explodes.

Anyone telling you America can simply move on from Chinese manufacturing is lying or does not understand how the modern supply chain works. This is not like switching coffee brands. This is like pulling out the bones and hoping the body still stands.

If the United States tries to decouple too fast, it will discover that the biggest casualty is not China’s bottom line but America’s standard of living.
