French Prime Minister François Bayrou has been engulfed in a widening scandal over physical violence and sexual abuse allegedly committed over decades at a Catholic school in his home region in the Pyrenees.

The crisis has been brewing for weeks,after more than 200 of now adult victims came forward to speak about the psychological terror, beatings and rapes allegedly inflicted on them by priests and teachers at the Notre Dame de Bétharram school from the 1950s to the 2000s.-

Some have accused the prime minister of knowing about the problemssince he was a prominentlocal politician at the time and later education minister. Bayrou has denied knowledge of the abuses.

But the scandal deepenedfor Bayrou this weekwhen his eldest daughter, Hélène Perlant, 53, revealed in interviews that she too had been beaten by a priest at the school, though she insisted she never told her parents about it.

Several of Bayrou’s five children attended the school, and his wife taught some classes there.

Perlant then appeared tocast doubt on Bayrou’s lack of knowledgeabout the Bétharram case. In an interview with investigative outlet Mediapart on Wednesday,she said her father met with a judge investigating charges of rape against one of the priests at the school in the 1990s.

“I don’t think [my father] remembers, but I was there the evening he came back from judge Mirande’s,” she said. Her father asked her at the time if she thought the allegations could be true, she added.

Judge Christian Mirande has confirmed the meeting,while a Bétharram teacher and a student have said publicly that they alerted Bayrou to the problems.

Opposition figuresfrom the far right and far left have threatenedto hold a vote of no confidence that could topple Bayrou, as they did last year with prime minister Michel Barnier. Appointed in December by his longtime ally President Emmanuel Macron, Bayrou is already on thin ice as he has been unable to pass the 2025 budget in the fragmented parliament.

He is due to answer questions before a parliamentary inquiry on May 14.“As a father, it stabs me in the heart . . . it’s almost unbearable,” Bayrou said of learning of his daughter’s experience. “I was never informed of anything regarding violence [in the school].”

Perlant told France Inter that she “wanted to come forward, to say ‘I’m one of those at Bétharram’, so as to be able to talk with [other victims] —just another victim, one among others, and the daughter of the prime minister”.

She recounted her experience in an interview with Paris Match,saying a priest had “grabbed me by the hair, dragged me across the floor for several metres, then punched and kicked me all over”. The incident happenedin front of dozens of people, she said, none of whom came to her aid. “I wet myself and stayed like that all night, damp and rolled up in a ball in my sleeping bag,” she added.

Like in other countries, France has been reckoning with cases of alleged cover-ups by the Catholic Church.Most recently, the late Abbé Pierre, a priest who founded a major charity for the poor, was exposed as a paedophile. The alleged offences occurred over decades, and investigations have shown that leaders in the French Catholic Church were aware of his behaviour,as was the Vatican.

RFK Jr. Responds To Report He's Considering Removing COVID-19 Vaccines From CDC Schedule

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on April 23 did not deny that he’s considering removing COVID-19 vaccines from the childhood vaccination schedule.

“We need to ask questions and we need to consult with parents, we need to give people informed consent, and we shouldn’t be making recommendations that are not good for the population,” Kennedy said during an appearance on Fox News.

Politico, citing anonymous sources, reported this week that Kennedy is mulling the removal of COVID-19 shots from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s schedule for children.

An official with the Department of Health and Human Services, which Kennedy heads, told The Epoch Times in an email that “no final decision has been made.”

The CDC, which is part of the department, did not return an inquiry.

Kennedy said on Fox that President Donald Trump does not believe that any person should be required to receive a vaccine, and noted that all vaccines carry risks.

“The COVID vaccine, the recommendation for kids was always dubious,” Kennedy said.

“And it was dubious because kids had almost no risk for COVID-19. Some kids—certain kids that had very profound morbidities—may have a slight risk. Most kids don’t, so why are we giving this to tens of millions of kids? Because the vaccine itself does have profound risks.”

Kennedy noted that established side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine include a form of heart inflammation called myocarditis and a related condition called pericarditis. He also pointed out that 15 vaccinated participants in Pfizer’s clinical trial died, compared with 14 participants who did not receive the company’s vaccine.

Three COVID-19 vaccines are currently available for use in the United States: one from Pfizer, one from Moderna, and one from Novavax.

Advisers to the CDC recommended in 2022 that the agency add COVID-19 vaccines to the schedule, concluding that the benefits of the shots outweighed the risks. The CDC in 2023 added them to the schedule.

According to the schedule, all children who have never received a COVID-19 vaccine should receive at least one dose, depending on their age, while those who have received a vaccine in the past should receive at least one additional dose. Unlike many vaccines on the schedule, the COVID-19 vaccine has not been made compulsory for school attendance in states.

Kennedy said during his confirmation hearings, “I recommend that children follow the CDC schedule, and I will support the CDC schedule when I get in there if I’m fortunate enough to be confirmed.”

LOUIVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville officials have agreed to pay almost $1.6 million in damages and attorneys’ fees to settle the lawsuit Josephson v. Ganzel brought by Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing a respected psychiatrist whom the university demoted, harassed, and ultimately fired for speaking out on the harms of “transitioning” children.

In September of last year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit ruled that Josephson’s case should proceed to trial, declaring public university officials can be held personally accountable for censoring professors or retaliating against them as the University of Louisville did in Josephson’s case.

“After several years, free speech and common sense have scored a major victory on college campuses,” said ADF Senior Counsel Travis Barham.“As early as 2014, Dr. Josephson saw the truth behind dangerous procedures that activists were pushing on children struggling with their sex. He risked his livelihood and reputation to speak the truth boldly, and the university punished him for expressing his opinion—ultimately by dismissing him.But public universities have no business punishing professors simply because they hold different views. Dr. Josephson’s case illustrates why—because the latest and best science confirms what he stated all along. Hopefully, other public universities will learn from this that if they violate the First Amendment, they can be held accountable, and it can be very expensive.”

“I’m glad to finally receive vindication for voicing what I know is true,” said Josephson. “Children deserve better than life-altering procedures that mutilate their bodies and destroy their ability to lead fulfilling lives. In spite of the circumstances I suffered through with my university,I’m overwhelmed to see that my case helped lead the way for other medical practitioners to see the universal truth that altering biological sex is impossibly dangerouswhile acceptance of one’s sex leads to flourishing.”

The university hired Josephson to head up the then-struggling Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology, which he turned around into a program that received a national reputation for its work. He received high praise from both the university and outside psychiatric associations for his work. Josephson was also sought out for advice on how to improve and lead other child and adolescent psychiatry divisions.

But when Josephson, during a Heritage Foundation panel discussion,spoke in his personal capacity against subjecting children to harmful drugs and surgery in radical, misguided attempts to treat gender dysphoria, university officials—responding to demands from activists at the university’s LGBT Center—demoted him to the role of a junior faculty member andstripped him of his teaching duties.

University officials then conspired to get him fired. These efforts included keeping an “Allan tracking document,” solicited complaints from alumni who were coached on what to say, and discussing the need to generate “strong documentation” to avoid his reappointment. In February 2019, the university announced that it would not renew his contract,terminating his employment at the university after nearly 15 years of distinguished service.

In light of the settlement and the agreement on attorneys’ fees, ADF attorneys filed a stipulated dismissal of the remaining claims in the case on Monday.

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) told states on April 24 to take steps to make sure illegal immigrants do not receive benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), colloquially known as food stamps.

States must at a minimum verify the identity of program applicants, collect applicants’ Social Security numbers, compare the Social Security numbers to the federal government’s Social Security death data, and check whether the applicants are listed in a Department of Homeland Security database as being in the country illegally, John Walk, the USDA’s acting deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services, said in a memorandum to states.

The USDA released a letter from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that advised states that they can now use the Department of Homeland Security’s database for free.

State agencies must also verify U.S. citizenship for applicants “for whom there is an indicia that the applicant’s claim to United States citizenship (whether natural born, naturalized, acquired, or derivative) is questionable,” Walk wrote.

Federal law allows U.S. citizens and some legal immigrants to receive SNAP benefits but prohibits illegal immigrants from receiving food stamps. About 11.7 percent—approximately $10.5 billion—of the SNAP benefits paid by the USDA in fiscal year 2023 were improper, including improper payments to illegal immigrants, the Government Accountability Office said in a 2024 report.

States “did not always verify certain program eligibility requirements,” including citizenship, the report stated.

USDA officials are also encouraging states to require the verification of U.S. citizenship for each SNAP applicant, as the law allows states to mandate verification of certain factors and increase the number of in-person interviews of applicants.

“Benefit fraud is unacceptable in all forms, including use by illegal aliens. This guidance serves as a foundation for future compliance endeavors that will not only deter, but end access to benefits by illegal aliens. I appreciate your attention and assistance in making certain only those eligible receive SNAP benefits,” Walk said in the memo.

Walk cited President Donald Trump’s Feb. 19 executive order directing the USDA to “enhance eligibility verification systems, to the maximum extent possible, to ensure that taxpayer-funded benefits exclude any ineligible alien who entered the United States illegally or is otherwise unlawfully present in the United States.”

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins earlier this year sent a letter to states that said her guiding principles for SNAP included taking action to minimize fraud and waste while enforcing legal requirements.

“The days in which taxpayer dollars are used to subsidize illegal immigration are over,” Rollins said in a statement on Thursday. “Today’s directive affirms that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will follow the law—full stop.”

Numerous prominent Democrats are blindly rallying to the defense of a Wisconsin judge arrested Friday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for allegedly helping an illegal immigrant avoid arrest.

FBI personnel arrested Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan of Milwaukee on Friday morning after she allegedly helped an illegal immigrant accused of violent crimes slip away from federal immigration authorities on April 18. Numerous congressional Democrats quickly put out statements rallying around Dugan on Friday, just one week after Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen and other Democrats flew to El Salvador to conduct a welfare check on the deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a suspected MS-13 gang member.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents showed up to Dugan’s courthouse on April 18 to apprehend Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an illegal immigrant accused of domestic abuse who was scheduled for a hearing with the judge that day, according to the unsealed complaint. As Flores-Ruiz’s alleged victims sat in the courtroom, Dugan allegedly became visibly angry and took Flores-Ruiz into her chambers, instructing him to leave the building from a private exit after learning that ICE personnel were on the premises.

Shortly after the news of Dugan’s arrest broke, and in some cases before details of the allegations against her even became clear, elected Democrats rallied to her defense.

“In the United States, we have a system of checks and balances and separations of power for damn good reasons. The President’s administration arresting a sitting judge is a gravely serious and drastic move, and it threatens to breach those very separations of power,” Democratic Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin said in a statement. “Make no mistake, we do not have kings in this country and we are a Democracy governed by laws that everyone must abide by. By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders, and arresting a sitting judge, this President is putting those basic Democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line. While details of this exact case remain minimal, this action fits into the deeply concerning pattern of this President’s lawless behavior and undermining courts and Congress’s checks on his power.”

Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers also released a statement, suggesting that Dugan’s arrest is an example of the Trump administration using “dangerous rhetoric to attack and attempt to undermine our judiciary at every level.”

Democratic Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar conceded that there are still details coming to light, but she nevertheless believes Dugan’s arrest to be “a grave step and undermines our system of checks and balances” and a “drastic move that threatens the rule of law.”

Van Hollen, back in the U.S. after his taxpayer-funded excursion to El Salvador, weighed in on the Dugan situation, saying that “this is what fascism looks like.”

“This Administration’s willingness to weaponize federal law enforcement is shocking and this arrest has all the hallmarks of overreach,” Democratic Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore said in a Friday statement. “Federal law enforcement coming into a community and arresting a judge is a serious matter and would require a high legal bar. I will be following this case closely and facts will come out, however, I am very alarmed at the increasingly lawless actions of the Trump Administration, and in particular ICE, who have been defying courts and acting with disregard for the Constitution.”

Other than Van Hollen’s visit and the allegations against Dugan, there have been multiple other alleged instances of Democrats or government officials intervening to protect illegal immigrants — including some with violent criminal records — from federal immigration enforcement. For example, a former New Mexico judge and his wife were arrested Thursday for allegedly harboring an illegal immigrant gang member in their home, while Democrats in multiple states and jurisdictions have tried to prevent local law enforcement from working with federal immigration authorities.

LA To Institute Mass Layoffs Of City Workers In Wake Of $1 Billion Deficit

For many years now the narrative on California is that it is a country unto itself and it generates so many tax dollars the federal government and red states should be throwing a garden party in its honor. In reality, California is not a "donor state" as the Rockefeller Institute claims. It can't even support itself, let alone bolster the rest of the country.

This problem has become more evident in the past year as Los Angeles hits a budget deficit of a billion dollars and, the state government doesn't have the funds to help the city recover because of it's own $68 billion deficit.

In response to the lack of aid from the state or federal government, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass unveiled a proposed $13.9 billion municipal budget for fiscal year 2025-26, which includes more than 1,600 layoffs and the consolidation of four city departments in an effort to eliminate the overdraft. Though LA employs around 50,000 people in total and the layoffs might seem minor in comparison, the city's expansive programs require employee growth this year, not cuts.

Furthermore, it is likely that the 1600 fired workers are just the beginning. The city removed at least 2000 positions from its employee roster at the end of last year and is already moving to make cuts to existing workers.

AG Pam Bondi Will Subpoena Journalists in Leak Investigations

US Attorney General Pam Bondi will subpoena journalists in leak investigations, according to a memo obtained by Axios.

Bondi is rescinding a Biden-era policy restricting the use of subpoenas to obtain information from members of the press.

In 2021, the Biden Justice Department, led by then-US Attorney General Merrick Garland, adopted a policy restricting the use of subpoenas to obtain reporter information:

The U.S. Department of Justice today formally adopted a new policy that restricts the use of compulsory process to obtain information from, or records of, members of the news media acting within the scope of newsgathering activities. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the new policy, effective immediately, in a memo to Department leadership.

The Attorney General also reiterated his support for the durability of these policy changes. To further protect members of the news media in a manner that will be enduring, he asked the Deputy Attorney General to undertake a review process to further explain, develop, and codify the policy announced today into Department regulations. He also reaffirmed the Department’s support for congressional legislation to protect members of the news media.

Pam Bondi said it is necessary to rescind former AG Merrick Garland’s policies restricting the DOJ from compelling testimony or seeking records from journalists to identify leakers.

Axios reported:

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in an internal memo obtained by Axios that the Justice Department is rescinding her predecessor Merrick Garland’s policy restricting most subpoenas for journalists.

Why it matters: It is a sign that Bondi will continue the first Trump administration’s practice of trying to obtain reporters’ newsgathering materials in an effort to smoke out leakers.

“I have concluded that it is necessary to rescind Merrick Garland’s policies precluding the Department of Justice from seeking records and compelling testimony from members of the news media in order to identify and punish the source of improper leaks,” Bondi wrote.

Eruption warning updated for massive volcano as 300,000 Americans prepare for disaster

Alaska's Mount Spurr has experienced 66 earthquakes in the last week, signaling 'an elevated level of unrest.'

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) issued an update Friday, saying that the 11,000-foot-tall volcano has a lower level of erupting than it reported earlier in the year, but warned the event is still possible.

In March, AVO sounded the alarm that Mount Spurr could blow in the next few weeks, but ground deformation has slowed over the last month, and the shoreline along the crater has not lost ice as it would if magma were rising to the surface.

'The likelihood of an eruption has decreased from March, but the volcano remains at an elevated level of unrest and an explosive eruption (or eruptions) like those that occurred in 1953 and 1992 is still possible,' the AVO shared in the update.

'We would expect to see weeks or more of more elevated unrest that would provide advance warning of an eruption.'

Mount Spurr is located about 78 miles from Anchorage, which is home to nearly 300,000 people who are preparing for the eruption.

Locals have rushed to stock up on food and protective gear in the event the volcano blows without notice.

If the eruption does happen, Mount Spurr would spew multiple plumes of ash rising as high as 50,000 feet into the air, Matt Haney, scientist-in-charge at the AVO at US Geological Survey (USGS) told DailyMail.com.

Each ash-producing explosive episode would last three to four hours, and the resulting cloud could blanket the city of Anchorage and other nearby communities in a thick layer of dust.
