AGOA: The U.S.-Africa Trade Program

U.S. trade with sub-Saharan Africa has declined in recent years, prompting analysts to question the effectiveness of a preferential trade program for the region.

Summary

Launched in 2000, AGOA is a preferential trade program that allows countries in sub-Saharan Africa to export products to the United States tariff-free.

Many experts say the program has failed to live up to expectations, and the region’s exports to the United States have dipped below what they were when AGOA began.

In 2022, the removal of several countries, including Ethiopia, from AGOA added to uncertainty about the program’s future.

 

Introduction

The cornerstone of U.S. economic relations with sub-Saharan Africa since 2000 has been the African Growth and Opportunity Act, or AGOA. The program offers more than three dozen participants preferential access to U.S. markets by eliminating import tariffs.

 

Policymakers hoped that AGOA, as the primary U.S. trade policy for the region, would foster economic and political development in Africa. However, the outsize roles of oil and apparel in African export growth have raised questions about whether AGOA can diversify the region’s economies and increase its competitiveness in global markets. Moreover, after peaking in 2008, U.S. trade with AGOA’s participants has dropped to near its pre-AGOA total. Meanwhile, African trade relationships with other countries, particularly China, have greatly expanded.

 

Why was AGOA created?

AGOA is a trade preference program established in 2000 as part of broader legislation President Bill Clinton enacted to strengthen U.S. trade ties with Africa and the Caribbean. The act is unilateral, meaning it does not require African countries to lower their own barriers to U.S. goods, though it encourages them to do so. President Clinton saw the policy as a way to boost growth and bolster democratic ideals across the continent. He also said it would strengthen the U.S. economy by opening markets with “hundreds of millions of potential consumers” to American producers.

 

The act is an extension of the Generalized System of Preferences, a U.S. trade preference system introduced in 1974 that allows more than one hundred countries, mostly low-income nations, to export many of their goods to the United States duty-free. AGOA goes even further, offering this access to more than six thousand products from its thirty-eight current participants. It also mandates the executive branch to increase U.S. development assistance to sub-Saharan African countries in areas including agriculture and HIV/AIDS prevention. It was set to expire in 2008 but has since been renewed four times.

Which countries take part in it?

 

Only sub-Saharan African countries are eligible to be beneficiaries of AGOA, and the legislation outlines requirements candidates must fulfill, such as upholding the rule of law and human rights and liberalizing their economies. However, U.S. presidents can disqualify countries at their discretion and have done so, citing reasons such as rights violations and protectionist policies. Participants graduate out of AGOA [PDF] if per capita gross national income reaches $12,535, the World Bank’s lower limit for high-income countries.

While Guinea and Mali send less than 1 percent of their exports to the United States, Ethiopia relies heavily on AGOA’s benefits to support its textile industry. The Joe Biden administration has emphasized that the countries can be readmitted if they return to compliance, but experts say the expulsion could push the countries to strengthen trade ties with other powers; some Ethiopian business leaders, for instance, have argued in favor of moving closer to China, given Beijing’s no-strings-attached approach to investment.

Inefficient African Ports See Diverted Red Sea Traffic Slipping Away

Africa’s inefficient and aging ports are hampering the continent’s chances of capitalizing on a surge in ship traffic that’s avoiding attacks by Houthi rebels through the Red Sea, logistics experts said.

 

The number of vessels sailing around the southern tip of Africa is up 85% from the first half of December, when the Iran-backed, Yemen-based terrorists intensified their attacks on ships, according to Clarksons Research. Some of the biggest beneficiaries are ports in South Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Namibia, all of which have seen volumes rise, manufacturing and logistics company Fictiv Inc. said.

 

“However, most ports in Africa are inefficient and not in the best condition to be able to fully realize all the benefits,” said Vinny Licata, Fictiv’s head of logistics. “This is could be a real opportunity for Africa, but several ports were already congested due to inefficiencies. Investments are needed to enable them to compete.”

 

Merchant ships have largely avoided the route that would ultimately take them through the Suez Canal since the attacks started. Last week, a missile strike killed three crew members, the first confirmed deaths since the attacks began.

 

Currently, Africa accounts for about 6% of global maritime trade, despite approximately 90% of its imports and exports being transported by sea, according to Freight Right Global Logistics Chief Executive Officer and Founder Robert Khachatryan.

 

Freight costs from Asia to the US East Coast are projected to increase by 20% to 30%, with delivery times extended by two weeks due to the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, said Khachatryan.

 

It’s here that South Africa’s port-infrastructure problems — ranging from equipment breakdowns to staff shortages — hurt its competitive advantage. Shipping companies using the Cape route for east-west trade have largely avoided having to restock and refuel at South Africa’s maritime hubs due to their inability to provide services.

 

“This shift has directly benefited strategically located ports like Toamasina in Madagascar, Port Louis in Mauritius, and Walvis Bay in Namibia, which lie along the east-west route connecting Asia with Europe” as ships avoid South Africa, Khachatryan said.

 

Countries with the capability to quickly scale up port and logistical operations — such as Morocco and Ghana — could accommodate the increased demand for maritime services.

 

“Their investment in port infrastructure in recent years positions them to manage the surge efficiently,” Khachatryan said. For other parts of Africa, “concerns arise from sea-piracy incidents near Somalia and Nigeria as vessels navigate around Africa,” he said.

 

Fragmented Politics

Rising traffic around the Cape of Good Hope could strengthen South Africa’s position in the BRICS club of nations and potentially in global trade negotiations in the longer term, said James Hill, CEO of MCF Energy Ltd.

 

“African policymakers may look at port-development strategies that will help to build intra-African and international connectivity,” Hill said. “Even after the conflict in Israel ends, the danger in the Gulf may continue as the Houthis may choose to retaliate against the US for their counterattack, meaning these benefits may continue.”

The Kentucky Republican has taken to social media to blast his party for plowing ahead on a bill nobody will have time to read.

House GOP leaders and the White House are pushing for a final passage vote today on a roughly 1,100-page bill that hasn’t even been fully written — and one Republican lawmaker is taking notice in a very public way.

 

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, fresh from being called out by President Donald Trump the day before as a “grandstander” who doesn’t “understand government,” is using his social media platform to call attention to the path down which Republicans are headed.

 

“Major provisions of the big beautiful bill are still being negotiated and written, yet we are being told we will vote on it today,” Massie said in one X post on Wednesday. “Shouldn’t we take more than a few hours to read a bill this big and this consequential?”

 

In a follow-up, Massie noted, “it’s in our rules that we will have 72 [hours] to read every bill. Yet it’s been circumvented this week by a ‘manager’s amendment’ which substantially changes the bill but should only contain technical clarifications.”

 

That manager’s amendment would reflect the major policy changes leaders are currently discussing with conservative hard-liners. It would replace the base text of the GOP megabill that is currently being debated in the House Rules Committee, which needs to take a vote to pave the way for floor consideration of the party-line domestic policy package.

 

Leadership wanted to pass that bill before the end of the day. But the Rules panel has been meeting since 1 a.m. on Wednesday and shows no sign of concluding anytime soon. Speaker Mike Johnson and members of the House Freedom Caucus are also heading to the White House to meet with Trump on the megabill later this afternoon to try to break the impasse over the scale of spending cuts on the table.

 

In another X post, Massie applied his own captions to a popular meme — a photo of one man noticing a woman walking down the street, while another woman looks on horrified. In Massie’s version, the woman being admired is labeled “one big beautiful bill,” the man is tagged as “MAGA” and the other woman has the description, “no more omnibus bills.”

 

The Republican domestic policy package is not technically an omnibus, which refers to a piece of legislation that bundles together multiple appropriations bills. But fiscal hawks, including Massie, have raged over the megabill’s price tag, complaining that it doesn’t do enough to cut spending.

A civil war of “epic proportions” could erupt within weeks, the top US diplomat has claimed

 

Syria could face a surge of violence and total collapse within weeks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told lawmakers in Washington.

 

The top US diplomat has defended President Donald Trump’s approach to Syria, including the decision to lift unilateral sanctionsand meet in person with the new Syrian president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, despite his jihadist background.

 

”The transitional authority, given the challenges they’re facing, are maybe weeks – not many months – away from potential collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions,” Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday. “Basically, the country is splitting up.”

 

The secretary blamed former President Bashar Assad for the continued violence since 2011, when a US-backed effort to remove him from power led to a prolonged and bloody conflict.

 

Rubio said Syria had become “a playground for jihadist groups, including ISIS and others.” Al-Sharaa, who once led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) under the name Abu Mohammad al-Julani, rose to power after deposing Assad last year.

”If we engage [the al-Sharaa government], it may work out, it may not work out,” Rubio stated.“If we did not engage them, it was guaranteed to not work out.”

 

US sanctions had aimed to stymie Assad’s efforts to rebuild the country after he regained control of most of Syria by 2015. Persistent issues had eroded the morale of the Syrian military, which largely refused to defend Damascus when HTS launched its offensive last November.

 

Al-Sharaa has pledged to uphold Syria’s ethnic and religious diversity as he courts Western backing.However, his rule has been marked by reported massacres of Alawites, Christians, and Assad supporters.

 

Israel has carried out multiple airstrikes in Syria in recent months, claiming the attacks were intended to defend Druze militias from fighters aligned with the new government.

Report on the 1979 Vela Incident

The Vela Incident

On 22 September 1979 around 00:53 GMT, the Vela 6911 satellite detected the characteristic double flash of an atmospheric nuclear explosion apparently over the Indian Ocean or South Atlantic. The test location was later localized at 47 deg. S, 40 deg. E in the Indian Ocean, in the vicinity of South Africa's Prince Edward Island, by hydroacoustic data. Due to the position ambiguity of the initial detection (the Vela optical sensors were not imaging sensors and could did not detect location), the location is variously described as being in the Indian Ocean or South Atlantic. The characteristics of the light curve indicated that it was a low kiloton explosion (approximately 3 kt). The hydroacoustic signal indicated a low altitude explosion. A major and lingering controversy erupted over the interpretation of this apparent detection.

 

The Vela satellite program was an nuclear detonation (NUDET) detection system setup after the 1963 limited test ban and was designed to detect nuclear explosions in space and (later) air. There were two groups of Vela satellites developed. The original Vela were equipped only with sensors for space detection and were launched in three pairs between 1963 and 1965. They operated for at least five years, far beyond their nominal design life of six months. A second generation called Advanced Vela were launched in 1967, 1969 and 1970. These satellites added "bahngmeters" - optical sensors for detecting atmospheric tests - and had a nominal design life of 18 months, but were later rated with a seven year lifespan, although they were all operated for more than ten years, with the last one being turned off in 1984 – after 14 years of successful operation [JPL 2001]; [Astronautix 2001].

 

Vela 6911 is presumably one of the Advanced Vela pair launch launched on 23 May 1969 (perigee 77,081 km, apogee 145,637 km, inclination 61.6 deg), and had thus been operating over ten years at the time of the 1979 detection.

 

The Vela satellite system had previously made 41 similar detections of atmospheric tests, each of which had been subsequently confirmed through other means. The detection came at a bad time for the Carter administration which would be under pressure to take definite action if the detection were accepted as accurate. Inescapably it seemed that either Israel, South Africa, or both, would be implicated. Consequently a panel of scientists from academia known as the Ruina Panel, after its head Dr. Jack Ruina, was created to review the reliability of the Vela data. Since this satellite was operating past its expected lifespan, and its electromagnetic pulse (EMP) sensor was inoperative, questions about the reliability of the detection were raised. The panel ultimately concluded in a report released in the summer of 1980 that the signal "was probably not from a nuclear explosion. Although we cannot rule out that this signal was of nuclear origin".

 

This conclusion has cast a pall over public confidence in the ability of the U.S. to unambiguously detect clandestine nuclear explosions for over twenty years.

 

During the panel's months of deliberations, concluded in July 1980, a variety of pieces of corroborating evidence surfaced.

One of the clearest indications was from ocean acoustic waves detected by hydrophones. The hydrophone data indicated signals both from a direct path originating near Prince Edward Island and from a reflection of Scotia Ridge in the Antarctic and the Antarctic ice shelf. Analyses of these signals conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) confirmed that they had been generated at a time and location consistent with the Vela 6911 detection and that their intensity was consistent with a small nuclear explosion on, or slightly under, the ocean's surface. This evidence alone, if accepted as valid, should be sufficient to confirm the accuracy of the detection [LANL Daily News Bulletin 1997]; [Albright 1994b].

 

The radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico detected an anomalous traveling ionospheric disturbance (that is, an upper atmosphere wave) moving southeast to northwest during the early morning hours of 22 September 1979, something researchers had never before witnessed. Powerful explosions create ionospheric disturbances from the direct transmission of the upward propagating shock wave to the ionosphere. But Los Alamos space scientist Lew Duncan, one of the researchers who originally connected the ionospheric disturbance to theevent that night, said in 1994 that he was still not fully convinced that what the dish at Arecibo detected was a nuclear test [Albright 1994b].

 

Frank Barnaby cites additional ionospheric data collected later by NRL, and confirmation from Air Force early warning radar signals made on 22 September, that was not considered by the Ruina Panel though he does not describe the evidence in greater detail [Barnaby 1989; pg. 17-18].

 

Unfortunately efforts to detect the one completely unambiguous "smoking gun" signature of a nuclear explosion, guaranteed to silence skeptics, namely radioactive fallout, failed. The U.S. government quickly launched a major effort to collect samples of the fallout cloud, but Air Force attempts to sample the fallout failed to enter the low-pressure air mass that had been over the detonation site at the time of the explosion (what the problem was I do not know). However Dr. Van Middlesworth detected low levels of iodine-131, a short-lived radioactive fission product, in sheep thyroids in the states of Victoria and Tasmania in western Australia soon after the event. Studies of wind patterns confirmed that fall-out from an explosion in the southern Inidian Ocean could have been carried there [Barnaby 1989; pg. 17].

UK Contractor Extradited to U.S., Pleads Guilty in Massive USAID Fraud Scheme Tied to Pakistan Energy Program

A UK citizen who ripped off American taxpayers through a U.S.-funded foreign aid program has been sentenced to time served after a brazen kickback scheme drained nearly $100,000 in USAID funds — and he’ll now be handed over to immigration authorities.

 

Stephen Paul Edmund Sutton, 53, of the United Kingdom, pleaded guilty in Washington, D.C. federal court Monday to conspiring to commit theft concerning a program receiving federal funds, a felony offense.

 

Sutton was a Logistics Operations Manager for a contractor implementing the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Power Distribution Program (PDP) in Pakistan — a five-year effort that was supposed to help modernize Pakistan’s failing electric utilities.

 

Instead, Sutton and his co-conspirator, who remains under indictment, lined their pockets by setting up bogus shell companies that funneled inflated contracts for forklifts and crane services — all under the guise of helping Pakistan’s struggling power grid. Sutton personally pocketed at least $21,000 in kickbacks.

According to court documents, PDP was a component of U.S. government assistance to the government of Pakistan to support its energy sector.

 

Launched in September 2010, the five-year program was designed to facilitate improvements in Pakistan’s government-owned electric power distribution companies through interventions and projects addressing governance issues, technical and non-technical losses, and low revenue collection.

 

The main goal of the PDP was to improve the commercial performance of the participating distribution companies through technology upgrades and improvements in processes, procedures, and practices, as well as training and capacity building.

 

Under the PDP contract, Sutton’s employer subcontracted through purchase orders with vendors in Pakistan for certain goods and services.

 

From May through November 2015, Sutton and his co-conspirator, an employee supervised by Sutton, participated in a kickback scheme by creating two companies, obtaining PDP purchase orders for forklift and crane services for the companies, and distributing the profits to themselves.

 

As part of the scheme, his co-conspirator arranged for low-grade local vendors to provide the services for at least half the contract rates, and Sutton ensured that the company paid the invoices despite suspicions raised by an accounts payable officer.

 

U.S. government sentencing documents indicate the agency was defrauded of almost $100,000 and that for his part, Sutton received at least $21,000 in kickbacks.

 

Sutton’s co-conspirator is also charged by indictment and his case is pending disposition.

 

This case was investigated by the USAID Office of Inspector General and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily Miller and former Special Assistant United States Attorneys Scot Morris and Nicholas Coates of the Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights Section.

 

The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance in securing the arrest and extradition of Sutton from the UK.

Masked NIH Employees Storm Out Of Meeting After Director Bhattacharya Questions Agency's Role In COVID-19 Origins

 

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sparked a mass walkout of NIH employees after suggesting that COVID-19 may have originated from a Wuhan lab and that NIH helped fund it.

 

During a staff town hall meeting on Monday, Bhattacharya told NIH employees, “It’s possible that the pandemic was caused by research conducted by human beings, and it’s also possible that the NIH partly sponsored that research.”

 

That comment prompted dozens of NIH employees to walk out of the meeting.

 

As the NIH employees, some wearing masks, stormed out of the meeting, Bhattacharya called after them, “Nice to have free speech. You’re welcome, you guys.”

 

Bhattacharya told the remaining employees, “If it’s true that we sponsored research that caused the pandemic — and if you look at polls of the American people, that’s what most people believe, and I’ve looked at the scientific evidence and I believe it — [then] what we have to do is make sure that we don’t engage in research that is any risk…to human populations.”

 

The U.S. has faced growing scrutiny for the NIH’s participation in controversial virus manipulation experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology where the FBI and CIA both believe the COVID-19 virus originated.

 

As the new director of NIH, Bhattacharya has also faced a $2.7 billion cut in funding from the federal government as well as the layoffs of more than 1,200 staff members.

“This unit was intended to be a successful combat force of the Ukrainian army. But since its deployment to the front, it has been multiplying controversies over equipment shortages, including drones, and mass abandonment of posts among its soldiers.

 

The Ukrainian army announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, that it was launching an inspection of the “Anne of Kiev” brigade, trained and equipped by France to support Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, but which has been at the heart of scandals concerning embezzlement and desertions for months.”

 

The brigade was hailed by Macron and Zelensky as ‘a symbol of military cooperation between Kyiv and Paris’.

 

Ukrainian magazine Ukrainska Pravda revealed on Monday (19) that Colonel Tarass Maksimov was involved in a case of false payments and extortion of money from his troops.

The Trump administration came to the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning, once again asking the justices to take action on their emergency docket.U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer urged the court to temporarily pause an order by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., that would require the Department of Government Efficiency to provide information in a lawsuit filed under the Freedom of Information Act. Sauer told the justices that requiringDOGE as a “presidential advisory body” to respond to the plaintiffs’ requests, a process known as discovery, “clearly violates the separation of powers” and “will significantly distract” from DOGE’s “mission of identifying and eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse in the federal government.”

Chief Justice John Roberts instructed CREW to file a response to the government’s request by noon on Friday, May 23.

 

President Donald Trump created DOGE on Jan. 20 to “further the President’s agenda by ‘modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.’”DOGE is not a cabinet-level departmentbut has had sweeping involvement in the president’s efforts to shrink the federal government across agencies since he took office.

 

The Trump administration’s request on Wednesday stems from a Jan. 24 request made under FOIA by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government watchdog group.CREW sought, among other things, communications between the DOGE administrator, Amy Gleason, and DOGE staff, as well as financial disclosures submitted by DOGE personnel.

 

On Feb. 20, CREW filed a lawsuit under FOIA in federal court in Washington, D.C. It sought documents that, according to CREW, it wanted before Congress passed a bill to fund the federal government.

 

As the case comes to the court on Wednesday, it centers on CREW’s request for expedited discovery to determine whether DOGE is an “agency” that must comply with FOIA. CREW asked to depose Gleason as well as for a list of government contracts and grants that DOGE recommended be canceled, a list of employees and positions that DOGE recommended be terminated, and a list of current and former DOGE employees.

 

U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper largely granted CREW’s request, including the request to depose Gleason, and instructed DOGE to respond quickly.

 

In an order on May 14, the U.S.Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit declined to pause Cooper’s order, calling the discovery order “narrow” and “modest.”

 

Sauer came to the Supreme Court one week later, asking the justices to intervene. He told them that Cooper had “granted expedited, intrusive discovery into a presidential advisory body to address whether that advisory body is exempt from FOIA.” Such an order, he emphasized, gives CREW “a significant part of the information it would obtain were it to prevail on the merits of its FOIA arguments,” andit “offends the separation of powers by compromising the ‘necessity’ for confidentiality that allows presidential advisors to provide ‘candid, objective’ advice and communication.”

 

The justices are already considering another emergency appeal involving DOGE: On May 2, the Trump administration asked the justices topause an order by a federal judge in Baltimore that temporarily restricts DOGE team members from accessing the records of the Social Security Administration, access which challengers argue could expose the personal data of millions of Americans. The court has not yet acted on that appeal.

How white nationalists infiltrated the wellness industry

 

The Mighty White Soap Company appears to be run out of a rural home in Michigan, in the US Midwest.

 

The marketing images they've posted online have an earthy, back-to-the-land appearance. Owls, antique fonts, and autumn leaves complete the quaint theme.

 

But to the right audience, the product names of Mighty White mean much more than they first appear. Take, for instance, one recent product called Day of the Rope Soap.

 

"There is a political manifesto written by an American neo-Nazi called The Turner Diaries that advocates what's called accelerationism: the idea that you can create enough low-level chaos as individual actors to destabilise a national government to the point that it collapses and white nationalists can fill the political void," Mark Hay, a freelance journalist covering extremism and niche subcultures tells ABC Radio National's Late Night Live.

 

"And in that novel, The Day of the Rope is the day that they execute all of the 'race traitors'… the people within the white community who worked against the supposed white interests."

 

Hay says Mighty White soaps are often named with references to far-right memes or tropes, or with openly racial names like its Caucasian Abrasion body scrub.

 

Mighty White is one of the companies that Hay has documented as part of a small but growing wellness subculture that uses ideas of purity, health and fitness to spread white nationalism. It's one of the oldest examples that he found, as it has been selling its soaps since 2015.

 

The connection between soap and white supremacy is cropping up all over the place, as Hay revealed in a major investigation for Al Jazeera published in February. He identified more than 20 companies in the US and United Kingdom that were active while reporting on the story from November 2022 to January this year.

 

He discovered hateful ideologies that have infiltrated the wellness movement and uncovered what they say about a new phase in white nationalism.

 

Soap and supremacy

Hay came across the story by chance while trying to learn more about white supremacist communities, researching in neo-Nazi forums and chat rooms. He had grown accustomed to mostly seeing "disaster prepper" or racist literature, but in recent years, a new type of post caught his attention.

 

"A few years ago I started seeing ads for soap, and it struck me as odd," he says.

 

"And I decided to look into it. And after a little bit of time, I realised … this is perfectly logical. It's new, but it's an extension of trends that have existed within white nationalism for decades."

An economist has linked Australia's population growth with a surge in support for Labor and described how the party is 'importing future voters' with its high immigration policy.

 

Australia hit a net overseas migration record of 528,000 in 2022-23, followed by 435,000 in 2023-24.

 

The Albanese government has forecast the rate for 2024-2025 to fall to 260,000 and then 225,000 the year after, although budget figures have consistently underestimated net migration numbers in the past.

 

The largest source of permanent migrants to Australia in 2023-24 was India, followed by China, the Philippines and Nepal.

 

Leith van Onselen, who is chief economist at MacroBusiness and previously worked at the Australian Treasury, has argued that the growing Indian community in Australia is a boon for Anthony Albanese.

 

Asked if there was any evidence that population growth had led to more support for the Labor government, Leith van Onselen told 2GB's Luke Grant, 'unfortunately there is'.

 

'There was a post-2022 election survey done by Carnegie and Dowman, and that showed that 58 per cent of the Indian community voted for Labor versus 34 per cent for the Coalition,' Mr van Onselen said.

 

'And the Indian community is now our largest immigration source.

 

'It seems that that community votes overwhelmingly for Labor.'

 

After this month's election, social media was flooded with videos of Indian students and migration agents 'celebrating wildly Labor's election victory, because they know that the Albanese government's a bit of a soft touch on immigration'.

 

'And obviously with Labor being re-elected, it lessens the chance of immigration cuts, it means more international students. So that community was obviously celebrating,' Mr van Onselen said.

 

'Labor is incentivised to maintain a high immigration policy because it's effectively importing future voters.'

 

He said it showed the Coalition had 'shot themselves in the foot' because much of the immigration to Australia over the past 20 years had happened under Coalition governments.

 

'They effectively imported a whole bunch of people who were then more likely to vote for Labor… They probably did it inadvertently.'

 

Peter Dutton made a series of policy backflips on immigration during the Coalition's failed election campaign.

 

Eventually, he vowed to cut net migration by 100,000 people to 160,000, based on the Albanese government's forecast of 260,000.

 

Mr van Onselen said monthly arrivals and departures data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed migration was trending up again.

 

About 188,000 permanent and long-term arrivals landed in Australia in the first quarter of 2025, he said.

 

'It looked like migration was coming down at the end of last year - it now looks like it's picked back up again.

 

'The whole housing equation in Australia just does not add up. We're fire-hosing in more and more people every year, we never have been able to build enough homes, and the government seems to wonder why we have this perpetual crisis.

 

'And it's primarily been driven by the federal government.'

The criminal teen did not have a license and there was no insurance on the car. His mother said that he took her car without her permission, so she is not liable for her son’s crash. She had intended to send him back to Colombia before the fatal incident, but he is now seeking asylum in the United States.

 

The teen faced up to two years in youth corrections for vehicular manslaughter, but Arapo County District Attorney Amy Padden offered him 2 years probation instead. It was reported that newly-elected DA Padden received $26,500 in campaign funding from George Soros.

Meanwhile, zero cuts were made to the Pentagon, instead, about $10 billion was funneled into it.

 

About 80 million Americans get Medicare and 70 million get Medicaid. Analysis from the congressional budget office shows that 7.6 million people would lose their Medicaid coverage if the current House proposal becomes law. 63% of nursing home care is funded by Medicaid. The bill would also cut 3 million people from the SNAP food stamps program.

 

The Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimated that the bill as written would increase deficits by $3.8 trillion through to 2034.

Ukraine declared martial law following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

The U.S. and Russia are urging Ukraine to hold elections, with NATO planning to discredit Zelenskyy.

 

Zelenskiy's five-year term was set to expire in 2024, but presidential and legislative elections cannot be held under martial law, which Ukraine declared in February 2022, following Russia’s invasion of the country.

 

However, Russia, and the United States, under its new administration have urged the country to hold elections in light of a possible ceasefire.

 

The U.S. President, Donald Trump has relayed to Ukraine’s head of state, Zelenskyy to hold elections by the end of the year.

As a result, NATO, according to Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, is planning a large-scale effort to publicize proof of Zelensky's participation in the sale of Western armaments to African organizations, to discredit him ahead of the election campaign.

 

Warning by Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari

According to a press release, issued on the 29th of November, 2022, by the Nigerian government, the then President Muhammadu Buhari in the country’s capital, urged more vigilance and tightening of security around borders, drawing attention to the increased number of arms, ammunition, and other weapons from the Russia and Ukraine war in the Lake Chad Basin.

There is, therefore, the urgent need for expedited collaborative actions by our border control agencies and other security services to stop the circulation of all illegal weapons in the region,” former president Buhari noted.

 

What the Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said

The SVR claimed in a statement that it is explicitly moving to disclose details regarding the "president" and his team members' appropriation of over $1.5 billion from funds meant for ammunition purchases alone.

 

"In addition, it is planned to expose the scheme by Zelensky and his entourage to transfer abroad the pay of 130 thousand dead Ukrainian servicemen who continue to be listed as alive and serving on the front lines," the agency press bureau added.

 

As reported by Sputnik, the SVR added that NATO is keen on removing Zelensky, "ideally through pseudo-democratic elections," which it estimates might happen as early as this fall.

Carl Niehaus reveals evidence of South African arms in Israel and Ukraine

The Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) permanent representative on the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD), Carl Niehaus, has responded to the committee, providing evidence into the EFF’s claims that South African-made weapons are used by nations embroiled in conflict.

 

During the recent JSCD meeting on April 4, 2025, Member of Parliament Niehaus called for an end to arms sales to allies of apartheid Israel and urged stricter monitoring of arms exports to nations embroiled in conflict.

 

His statements have raised significant concerns regarding South Africa's arms control practices.

 

Minister Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, chair of the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC), requested further substantiation of Niehaus's allegations.

 

Niehaus responded to this request in a letter dated April 14, emphasising the importance of transparency.

 

He stated: “This letter responds to your invitation during the NCACC’s engagement with the JSCD, for me to provide further information regarding concerns I have raised about South Africa’s arms control practices.

 

‘Given the public nature of your request, I reserve all my rights as a public representative to make the contents of this letter public.”

 

Niehaus underscored the importance of South Africa's integrity and international standing, especially regarding its leadership in human rights advocacy.

 

He highlighted the ongoing case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for genocide in Gaza as a critical issue that warrants urgent action to address potential violations of both domestic laws and international treaties related to arms control.

 

He elaborated on South Africa's obligations under various international agreements, including the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms (UNRCA), and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).

 

According to Niehaus, these treaties prohibit the sale and export of arms to countries involved in armed conflicts or committing human rights abuses, explicitly naming apartheid Israel and Ukraine.

 

Niehaus asserted that South Africa's moral authority on the global stage is at risk if the government continues to allow arms transfers to these nations.

 

“The allegations outlined in this letter undermine these principles and threaten South Africa’s moral authority on the global stage.”

 

He cited evidence indicating South Africa's involvement in arms production for Ukraine, referencing a January 10 report from the US Department of Defense that listed South Africa as a participant in the Ukraine Defence Contact Support Group (UDCG).

 

He argued that this involvement contravenes South African law, which prohibits the supply of arms to conflict zones.

 

Rheinmetall’s operations and allegations

He referenced Rheinmetall's plans to expand ammunition production at its South African RDM plants to meet Ukraine’s needs and replenish NATO/EU stockpiles.

 

A December 2023 press release detailed a significant artillery ammunition order for Ukraine, with RDM’s output contributing to a target of 700,000 rounds annually by 2024.

 

Niehaus said that since July 2024, RDM has increased its capacity from 100,000 to 150,000 shells annually, operating 24-hour shifts across its South African facilities.

 

“Rheinmetall operates warehouses in Germany and Hungary, from which it re-exports South African-manufactured shells to Israel and Ukraine.

 

“This circumvents both South African and German export controls, exploiting loopholes in end-user oversight.” Such actions, he argued, directly undermine South Africa’s ICJ case by potentially supplying Israel with munitions used in Gaza.

International reports and criticism

 

Niehaus said multiple reports substantiate these allegations, explaining that the investigation in Europe revealed Rheinmetall’s use of South African plants to bypass German export controls, supplying munitions to states with poor human rights records, including Israel.

 

He said the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre noted Rheinmetall’s failure to respond to UN experts’ calls to cease arms transfers to Israel, risking complicity in genocide.

 

“The NCACC’s failure to monitor end-user compliance means these arms are likely re-exported to Israel, fueling its genocide in Gaza and directly contradicting our ICJ case.”

 

According to Niehaus, In 2023, South African arms companies, with NCACC approval, exported R3.3 billion in arms to countries supplying Israel, including the US, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and France. Germany, Israel’s second-largest arms supplier, imported R1.7 billion in South African bombs, shells, and military technology.

 

He expressed concern: “Allowing RDM to supply munitions to Israel and Ukraine contradicts our vision of promoting a rules-based international order.”

Tallahassee-area State Attorney Jack Campbell reportedly has opened aninvestigation into the $10 million from a Medicaid settlement given to a charity connected to First Lady Casey DeSantisthat made its way into the coffers of a political committee. And Gov. Ron DeSantis isn’t happy about it.

 

“Based on what?” DeSantis said May 20 when a reporter asked about the probe, which was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald Tallahassee Bureau. “Everything that’s been thrown at (Hope Florida) is pure politics,” DeSantis said. “I believe in this program deeply and stand by it 100%.”

 

Campbell, a Democrat who first took office in 2017, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Last month he told the USA TODAY NETWORK - FLORIDA he wasn’t investigating the Hope Florida payment. "As for (an) investigation, the only source of information I have received is from members of the press," Campbell said in an email. "The Florida Legislature has many good lawyers including some former prosecutors. I am sure they would refer any evidence of crimes to me if they found them.”

 

In a recent response to a request by the Herald/Times for Hope Florida Foundation-related records, however, the records custodian for Campbellsaid the information couldn’t be released because it was “part of an open, on-going investigation.”

 

As state attorney for the 2nd Judicial Circuit, he is the capital region's top elected law enforcement official, responsible for prosecuting crime in six counties: Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Liberty, Wakulla and Leon, which includes Tallahassee.

 

News of the investigation came as DeSantis had finished lauding the Hope Florida program at an event in Tampa, highlighting its work to connect low-income Floridians with social services provided by nonprofits, including churches. As the brainchild of Casey DeSantis,Hope Florida began in 2021, using state employees in several agencies as “Hope navigators” to get those in need in touch with non-governmental entities to provide support.

 

But an inquiry led by House Republicansdiscovered a $10 million payment to the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity set up in2023to raise money for the program,was passed through other nonprofits before ending up in a political committee. The payment was part of a settlement between Centene, a provider under the state’s Medicaid Managed Care program, and the state.

 

Under the settlement, which was brought by overpayments made to Centene, the state received $57 million and the Hope Florida Foundation received a $10 million “donation.” (How does a state overpay for $67 million dollars)

 

State Attorney Jack Campbell took questions from reporters on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, about the surprise continuance that came two days earlier in the trial of Donna Adelson, who's accused of helping orchestrate the 2014 murder of law professor Dan Markel.

 

Days later, the Hope Florida Foundation gave two $5 million grants to two nonprofits.Those nonprofits then gave $8.5 million to Keep Florida Clean, a political committee.

 

That committee was run by James Uthmeier, who in October 2024 – when the payment was made – was DeSantis’ chief of staff and is now Florida's attorney general. The committee used the money to oppose Amendment 3 on the November ballot, which would have legalized recreational marijuana.

"This is not about politics. This is about doing good on behalf of the people who deserve a chance for someone to fight for them," Casey DeSantis said of Hope Florida during the event. Amid published reports that she may be reconsidering a run, the first lady also told the crowd she's in no hurry to make a decision:

 

“I've got to save the Free State, but we literally just went through an election cycle, right? We’re 100 days into the presidency. And you talk to a lot of people around the state, and they are so tired of politics.”

 

As for Andrade, he told the USA TODAY Network – Florida, "I’m not in a position to comment on what law enforcement is or isn’t doing.I’m convinced that crimes occurredand I believe those engaged in public corruption should face justice. Whether they ever face justice is up to law enforcement."

 

He confirmed that he turned over documentshis committee gathered to the State Attorney's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice.

 

"I spoke with the DOJ, and I wouldn't expect them to talk to me about it ever again (because) I told them everything I knew," he said. "Turned over every document to them, and that was it."

 

"From my perspective, I'm confident that a crime occurred, public corruption occurred," he added, "and that James Uthmeier committed money laundering and wire fraud. I'm confident enough to say that publicly …."

 

Uthmeier has said previously that he wasn't involved in settlement negotiations related to the Hope Florida contribution "and looking at it, everything looks legal." Andrade says the matter is out of his hands.

 

"It's always premature to overreact to an investigation because one result of an investigation is that no criminal charges are brought. So when I stopped having hearings, I sent everything I had over to the State Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice, and after that, as far as collecting new evidence, it's pretty much up to them."

After the 2020 election, founder and then-CEO Brooke Rollins was looking to salvage the “Trump 2.0” policy portfolio, the detailed plans for a second presidential term that never came, or rather, one that was delayed.

 

Her motivating question at the time: “How do we continue moving forward when we are no longer in the White House?” The answer will be on full display when assorted MAGA dignitaries kick off the summit Tuesday at the Kennedy Center by toasting “the America First Moment.” After decamping to a nearby Beltway hotel for the next two days, they will celebrate the crowning achievement of the young institute.

 

Over 86% of the 196 federal policies that AFPI drafted and recommended in 2022, while Republicans were still in the wilderness, have been advanced or enacted during the first 100 Days of the Trump administration, RealClearPolitics is first to report.

 

“President Trump has kept his promises. His administration’s speed and clarity in acting on these priorities is not just impressive, it’s historic,” said Greg Sindelar, who took over as interim CEO earlier this year. “The America First Agenda was always rooted in the needs of real people, not the whims of Washington. What we’re seeing now is the natural result of a movement that's aligned with the public, led by conviction, and governed with urgency.”

 

Some of the policies now implemented were already standard GOP boilerplate, like border security and economic deregulation, when AFPI made their recommendations. Rubio accuses Biden of being ‘irresponsible’ on Russia

The US secretary of state has said the “two biggest nuclear powers” must never stop talking, however different their positions

 

The administration of the previous US president, Joe Biden, acted irresponsibly by effectively shutting off communication with Russia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.

 

Testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, the diplomat said that Russia possesses the “largest strategic weapon stockpile in the world and one of the largest [in] tactical nuclear weapons.”

 

With this in mind, “there has to be some level of communication between the United States and Moscow,” irrespective of Ukraine, he insisted.

 

According to Rubio, “it’s frankly irresponsible to not have the two biggest nuclear powers on the planet communicating, which was the case for three years” under the Biden administration. He added that themere fact that Washington and Moscow talk to each other does not automatically mean that the two are “going to be allies or friendly.”

Trump responds to Zelensky’s call for tougher Russia sanctions

US President Donald Trump has pushed back on calls by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky for tougher sanctions on Russia,saying the decision is his alone.

 

Zelensky has continued to press for additional restrictions, accusing the Kremlin of failing to follow through on peace overtures. Western nations have imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 – measures Moscow has repeatedly condemned as illegal and ineffective.

 

Asked by reporters on Wednesday whether he was considering new measures,Trump said it would be “my determination” and “nobody else’s.”

 

He recalled a two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, followed by a conversation with EU leaders. “We’ll see how Russia behaves. We’ll see what’s going to happen,” Trump said, adding,“We have a pretty critical time right now.”

 

Both Putin and Trump described Monday’s call as productive. Trump said he believed Putin was interested in ending the conflict andwarned that additional economic pressure could hinder Washington’s mediation efforts.

 

Putin has said Moscow and Kiev should negotiate a formal memorandum outlining a detailed path to a broader peace agreement, and that a ceasefire could be part of the proposed road map.

 

Trump said he expects progress within two weeks but acknowledged that reaching a deal would be difficult.

 

On Tuesday, the EU and UK introduced new rounds of sanctions targeting Russia. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, a vocal critic of Moscow, said further measures were “in the works.”

 

In a series of posts on X on Tuesday and Wednesday, Zelensky welcomed the move by Kiev’s European supporters, calling it “a step in the right direction.” He also emphasized the need to work closely with the US so that “at some point,” it will impose appropriate sanctions as well.

 

Last week, delegations from Russia and Ukraine met in Istanbul for their first direct talks since Kiev unilaterally withdrew from the peace process in 2022. Russia’s top negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, later said that both sides had agreed to conduct a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 POWs each and to continue contacts once both had prepared detailed ceasefire proposals.

 

Kiev previously demanded an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Russia before entering direct negotiations – an idea that Moscow said amounts to asking for time for the Ukrainian military to regroup.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Moscow and Kiev would each draft their own version of the proposed memorandum,after which “difficult” negotiations would follow to agree on a single text.

yep. in the 90's, i was a traveling salesman in the mountains of eastern kentucky. didn't get my first cell phone until '92 or so and service was very spotty. probably the last time i used payphones regularly.
