Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities.

Ukrainian Military Confirms Drone Strike on Russian Oil Depot in Volgograd Region

Ukrainian Defense Forces have carried out a targeted drone strike on the Zhutovska oil depot located in Russia’s Volgograd region, a facility reportedly used to supply fuel to Russian military units operating in Ukraine.

The attack took place overnight on January 10 and was confirmed by Ukraine’s General Staff.

According to an official statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Zhutovska depot—located in the Oktabrsky district of Volgograd region—was hit as part of ongoing operations to degrade Russia’s offensive logistics capacity.

The Ukrainian military noted that the level of damage is still being assessed.

In addition to the strike on Russian territory, Ukrainian forces also targeted multiple sites in temporarily Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.

These included a drone warehouse belonging to Russia’s 19th Motor Rifle Division in the Zaporizhzhia region and a command center for drone operations near Pokrovsk in Donetsk.

Further attacks were reported in occupied parts of Donetsk region, where Ukrainian forces struck the troop concentration of Russia’s 76th Air Assault Division in the village of Kurakhivka, as well as a command-observation post and control point for units from the same division and Russia’s 41st Army in the town of Hirnyk.

“All cases recorded confirmed strikes by attack UAVs on designated targets,” the General Staff said, adding that Russian losses are currently being verified.

The statement also emphasized that these operations form part of a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at reducing the military and economic capacity of Russian forces and compelling Russia to halt its aggression.

Russian officials acknowledged a fire at the Zhutovska oil depot, with Volgograd region governor Andrey Bocharov attributing the incident to “falling drone debris.” No casualties were reported, according to his statement.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces reported that drone units inflicted approximately $20 billion in damage to Russian military assets over seven months, conducting over 832,000 sorties and striking more than 168,000 targets—including tanks, artillery, and logistics hubs—both in occupied territories and inside Russia.

Israeli Strikes Kill 13 in Gaza After Failed Rocket Launch, IDF Says

January 10, 2026

Israeli forces struck targets across the Gaza Strip on Thursday after detecting a rocket launch from Gaza City that fell short and landed near a hospital inside the enclave.

The Hamas-run civil defense agency said the strikes killed at least 13 Palestinians, including five children.

The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet issued a joint statement Friday calling the failed rocket “a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement” and said they struck the launch site shortly after detecting it.

The military released footage of the operations on X.

A Hamas source told Reuters the group was investigating the rocket launch allegation.

On Friday, the IDF identified several Hamas operatives it said were killed in the strikes.

Among them was Kamal Abdul Rahman Muhammad Awad, described as head of Hamas’s anti-tank array who had planned attacks against Israeli forces.

Ahmad Thabit, identified as head of a Hamas weapons workshop the IDF called “a significant hub of knowledge for producing weaponry,” was also killed.

The military said it also struck Ahmad Abdul Fattah Said al-Maghdlawi, a Nukhba force member who the IDF said participated in the raid on the Nova music festival during the October 7 massacre. trike results on Maghdlawi remain under review.

Four more operatives reportedly died when the military hit a command and control complex in northern Gaza. The IDF said those killed were planning an imminent attack on Israeli troops and that the site was used to store weapons.

The Hamas-run civil defense agency offered a starkly different picture of Thursday’s dead.

Near Jabalia refugee camp in the north, an 11-year-old girl was killed. Strikes also reportedly killed one person at a school housing displaced families, a man in a tent near Deir al-Balah, and four others in a house in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

“The death toll has risen to 13 as a result of Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip since this morning in a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement,” Bassal said.

Ceasefire Deadlocked

The US-brokered ceasefire took effect October 10 but remains stuck in its initial phase. Israel has refused to advance until Hamas returns the remains of the final Israeli hostage still held in Gaza.

A drone has struck a governorate building in the Syrian city of Aleppo, marking a sharp escalation in fighting between Syria’s army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The drone, believed to be launched by Kurdish-led SDF on Saturday, hit the building as several high-ranking officials, including Aleppo’s governor and two Syrian government ministers, were holding a news conference inside.

It was the first time the United States-backed SDF, which has been battling the army for control of Aleppo’s Kurdish neighbourhoods this week, had reportedly fired long-range drones into other areas of Syria’s second-largest city.

Reporting from Aleppo, Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar Atas said the upper floors of the governorate building were blackened by a blast caused by the drone.

“While this was happening, Governor Azzam al-Gharib was delivering a press briefing, giving the latest developments and trying to inform the public about what is happening now, not only in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh – where heavy fighting has been ongoing for four days – but also across the rest of the city,” he said, adding that it was not clear if there were any casualties.

The drone strike came shortly after the Syrian army announced it had suspended all military operations in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhood.

Under the proposed agreement, SDF fighters were to withdraw from the predominantly Kurdish area, surrender their weapons and be transferred to the town of Tabqa in northeastern Syria.

The Syrian authorities said the deal was aimed at restoring security and preventing further bloodshed.

According to Syrian officials, government forces entered Sheikh Maqsoud on Saturday and carried out sweeps of the neighbourhood, confiscating weapons and detaining or disarming SDF fighters.

State media reported that several SDF members surrendered at Yassin Hospital and that the remaining fighters would be transferred to Tabqa. The army said it had completed operations to secure the area.

Kurdish-led authorities disputed those claims, saying fighting continued in parts of the district and that government forces had not established full control.

The SDF called the Syrian government’s statements “a blatant attempt to mislead public opinion”, saying its fighters were still repelling a “fierce attack”.

Thousands displaced

The renewed fighting has had a severe effect on Syrian civilians in Aleppo.

Nearly 180,000 people have been displaced from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods, where the fighting has been focused.

Health officials said at least 22 people had been killed in the latest escalation, including civilians, with dozens more wounded.

Authorities warned residents not to return to the affected neighbourhoods due to ongoing military operations and the risk posed by unexploded ordnance.

Kurdish forces accused pro-government factions of shelling areas near Deir Hafer, saying the attack killed a 10-year-old girl.

Syrian officials, for their part, accused SDF fighters of operating from civilian buildings, including hospitals, and using residents as human shields.

Since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, efforts to integrate the SDF into state institutions and the Syrian army have repeatedly stalled.

The SDF rose to prominence as Syria began to fragment under the strain of civil unrest in 2011. It was officially established in 2015, with the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), forming the bulk of its fighting force.

In a deal signed last March, the SDF and the then-interim Syrian government emphasised the unity of Syria and agreed that “all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria” be merged “into the administration of the Syrian state, including border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields”.

The agreement aimed to bring the semi-autonomous region in northeastern Syria under the full control of the Syrian central government.

Since then, Kurdish leaders have expressed concerns over security guarantees and political representation, while Damascus has pushed to reassert control over all remaining autonomous areas.

Global concern

International actors have expressed concern over the renewed violence in Aleppo this week.

The US welcomed the reported ceasefire and called for calm, urging all parties to protect civilians and prevent further escalation.

Reporting from Damascus, Al Jazeera’s Ayman Oghanna said Washington can “do the most” to boost talks between the Syrian government and the SDF.

“The US has enjoyed a strong relationship with the SDF for over a decade. The US helped build up and train the SDF, it fought alongside the SDF, and 1,000 US troops remain in SDF territory where they work closely together in the effort to eradicate ISIL (ISIS) from Syria,” Oghanna said.

“But the US has also recently strengthened its ties with Damascus,” he added.

The United Nations also voiced alarm over the resumption of fighting, warning of the humanitarian consequences and calling on all sides to respect international law and ensure civilian protection.

Tom Barrack, the US special envoy for Syria, said in a statement on X on Saturday that he had met with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi in Amman to consolidate a ceasefire and ensure ‍the Kurdish forces’ “peaceful withdrawal” from Aleppo.

“We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately cease hostilities, and return to dialogue,” Barrack also said after meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.

Barrack added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s team is ready to facilitate engagement between the two sides to advance to integration process.

Turkiye, meanwhile, has said it is ready to “support” Syria in its fight against the SDF, a group Ankara distrusts and has long opposed.

North Korea Claims South Korean UAV Violated Its Airspace - What We Know About the Alleged Drone Incursion

North Korea recently accused South Korea of violating its airspace with a drone on January 4, escalating tensions ahead of a significant party meeting.

The drone, reportedly from near Incheon, was shot down by North Korean military forces and was equipped with surveillance technology. North Korean media released images of the drone's wreckage.

North Korea said Saturday that a South Korean drone violated its airspace earlier this month, the latest allegation likely to heighten tensions ahead of a key ruling party meeting in Pyongyang.

According to the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, a drone entered North Korean airspace on January 4 and was shot down by its military.

KCNA said the drone originated from an island near the South Korean city of Incheon and flew about 8 kilometers (5 miles) before being downed, reports Reuters.

The drone was equipped with surveillance cameras and was used to photograph what KCNA described as “major” North Korean facilities.

The news agency published images showing wreckage of the drone, electronic components and aerial photos it said were recovered from the device.

KCNA said the incident followed a similar drone incursion in September, when another South Korean drone was shot down near Kaesong.

It accused South Korea of continuing provocations despite a change in leadership in Seoul, calling the South its “enemy most hostile.”

The announcement comes as North Korea prepares for a major party congress expected to outline policy priorities for the next five years.

South Korea’s military denied responsibility, saying it does not operate the drone model shown by North Korean media and did not fly drones on the date cited by Pyongyang. It said it would investigate whether a civilian drone may have crossed the border.

“We have no intention of provoking North Korea, and we will continue to take practical measures and efforts to ease… tensions and build trust,” South Korea’s military said in a statement.

Since South Korean President Lee Jae Myung took office in June, North Korea has rejected efforts by his administration to re-engage and reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea expert Hong Min of the Korea Institute for National Unification questioned Pyongyang’s claims, noting that the drone parts shown appeared to be low-cost consumer products and that the images released did not appear to have significant military value.

“The South Korean military already has a number of high-value assets that can clearly monitor the area near the armistice line,” Hong said, making it unlikely the drone belonged to the South’s military.

North Korea has previously accused South Korea of sending drones over Pyongyang, including an alleged incident in October 2024. Those claims have repeatedly been denied by Seoul, as both sides continue to trade accusations amid strained relations.

President Trump said on Jan. 9 that he would call for a one-year cap on credit card interest rates of 10 percent, potentially starting later this month, though its enforcement may depend on Congress.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said that Americans are being “ripped off” by credit card companies that charge interest rates between 20 and 30 percent, and vowed his administration will put an end to it.

“AFFORDABILITY! Effective January 20, 2026, I, as President of the United States, am calling for a one year cap on Credit Card Interest Rates of 10%,” the president stated.

The cap’s proposed start date coincides with the anniversary of Trump’s second-term inauguration and, if implemented, would fulfill his 2024 election campaign pledge.

Who could have seen that coming?

As Bloomberg reports, card-lending has become highly lucrative with JPMorgan saying that in 2024 the net yield on its more than $200 billion in card loans was 9.73%. That drove the bulk of the $25.5 billion of revenue for its card services and auto unit, though the bank also had about $7 billion of charge-offs tied to cards.

Banking associations, including the Bank Policy Institute, issued a joint statement on Jan. 9 saying the 10 percent cap on credit card interest rates would reduce credit availability and adversely affect families and small business owners who rely on credit cards.

“We share the president’s goal of helping Americans access more affordable credit,” the groups said in a joint statement late Friday.

“At the same time, evidence shows that a 10% interest rate cap would reduce credit availability and be devastating for millions of American families and small business owners who rely on and value their credit cards, the very consumers this proposal intends to help.”

“If enacted, this cap would only drive consumers toward less regulated, more costly alternatives. We look forward to working with the administration to ensure Americans have access to the credit they need,” the statement reads.

A credit union trade group called a potential cap “devastating” for its members.

“Institutions will not be able to offer credit cards to most consumers at a 10% rate,” said Scott Simpson, the president of America’s Credit Unions.

“A 10% cap would mean the end of credit cards for most consumers except those who need them the least,” said Matthew Goldman, founder of Totavi, a consulting firm to electronic-payment and other financial technology companies. For example, “those with very good credit.”

According to the person quoted earlier, the image of Lord Shiva formed mid-air through a synchronised drone display vertically spanned around 280 metres, while the ‘shivaling’ extended about 330 metres.

The show was executed by BotLab, an IIT Delhi–incubated technology company that had previously organised drone displays for several landmark events, including in Ayodhya in January 2024 during the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of the Ram temple.

A member of the BotLab team said the drone show was designed as a “thematic aerial narrative”, blending spirituality, history, and national identity through precisely controlled light formations.

The tech firm said the sequence depicted Somnath’s journey through the ages, tracing its story from cosmic beginnings to modern-day India.

More “alien” objects are being spotted near UK airports as experts fear they are “getting braver”.

Official Government figures show incidents of “unidentified objects” in the atmosphere are growing year on year.

A Freedom of Information request carried out by the Daily Star Sunday found numbers of reports of “unusual” sightings in our skies are soaring.

Statistics from the UK Civil Aviation Authority show that in January 2010 there was only one incident. But that figure jumped to 14 in 2017 and then up again to 20 reports throughout 2023.

In 2024 there were 24 recorded incidents and last year there were a total of 19, but that number is expected to rise.

Alien experts have warned it shows aliens are “getting braver”.

The CAA said these are all “Airprox or other aviation safety incident reports” that involve objects described as unidentified, unknown, uncorrelated or unusual.

The formal documents detail situations where aircraft safety was, or potentially could have been, compromised.

But alien hunters do not believe it is all that unusual.

When we were on our way out into the Baltic Sea with my colleagues, heading toward what is known as the Baltic Sea Anomaly, something happened that immediately caught our attention. Something appeared above the object. Something that wasn’t there before.

The revelation is included in a tranche of new memos that FBI Director Kash Patel turned over to Congress this week that provide more clarity on the tactics and scope of the inquiry that agents and prosecutors used to try to build a case that Trump, his lawyers and allies had violated the law by attempting to offer the Senate alternate electors ahead of the certification of the 2020 election results that put Joe Biden into office.

Patel told Just the News that the bombshell revelation of paid snitch was the latest evidence that the Arctic Frost probe was an “egregious abuse of power and violation of the law.”

The records reveal multiple efforts by FBI supervisors to make Trump himself a "subject" of the probe, an idea that was ultimately rejected, their reliance on information in liberal media outlets to build the case as well as the sheer magnitude of major Trump figures whose phone or email records were exploited by the FBI for possible evidence of wrongdoing.

The new revelations include that the FBI obtained email records from nearly 150 figures in Trump world and that they analyzed phone data, not just on nine allies of Trump in Congress, but also on his lawyers and some of his outside advisers, like prominent TV host Steve Bannon.

Bannon's name was included in a list of at least 16 Trump associates whose long-distance phone call records were analyzed by the FBI for evidence that also included Trump's former campaign manager Bill Stepien, personal lawyers Sidney Powell, Jenne Ellis and Cleta Mitchell and the late former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik, who led a team of investigators probing irregularities in the 2020 election.

One memo also showed that in addition to Trump's and Vice President Mike Pence's personal cell phones, which Just the News previously reported were obtained, the FBI also analyzed the phone calls from "more than 50 White House-issued cell phones."

But the biggest bombshell in the latest document was the revelation that the FBI had an informant that Smith's office approved for compensation for the dirt he or she shared with the FBI.

An electronic communication "documents prosecutorial approval, in the form of emailed concurrence from Counselor to the Special Counsel Raymond Hulser on 06/02/2023, of a payment for information in the amount of $20,000.00 to [name redacted] for information provided in support of captioned investigation," one memo reads.

"The payment was discussed by Raymond Hulser and Assistant Special Counsel Julia Gegenheimer with Special Counsel Jack Smith," the memo added.

50 Killed In Aleppo Battle As Kurds Vow To Defend Their Neighborhoods From Syrian Army

Clashes raged between the forces of Syria’s Islamist-led Interim Government and fighters affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh in Aleppo on January 9, with reports indicating that the death toll from the battle in the northern Syrian city has risen 50.

Escalation began at the start of the week following a round of talks in Damascus which failed to produce any progress towards the implementation of the Mach integration agreement.

Government forces began a fully-fledged military operation to capture the two neighborhoods from Kurdish fighters a day earlier. The forces managed to storm Ashrafieh, and state media reported that the neighborhood was brought under control. However, the other side said that only a part of the neighborhood was lost.

The early morning saw a temporary ceasefire declared between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. with the government, which also sent buses to the entrance of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh claiming that an agreement was reached with the SDF to withdraw Kurdish fighters from there.

However, the stunt failed, with the general council of the two neighborhoods later issuing a statement rejecting calls to surrender.

“The appeals directed by the Damascus government forces to our people and our security forces are calls for surrender. However, our people in these neighborhoods are determined to stay and defend them,” the statement said.

In a follow up statement, the general council reiterated its stance, saying there would be no retreat from protecting the neighborhoods.

“We cannot take a single step back regarding the protection of our neighborhoods. We have made our decision to remain in our neighborhoods and defend them,” it added.
