The UK and Germany are reportedly discussing options to dissuade the US from claiming the Arctic island from Denmark

The UK and Germany are drawing up plans aimed at preventing US President Donald Trump from seizing Greenland, Bloomberg and The Telegraph reported over the weekend.

Trump has long argued that the US should control the Danish self-governing island, citing its strategic position and the need to deter the influence of Russia and China in the Arctic. His stance has put him at loggerheads with several European NATO members, who have rallied behind Denmark.

Berlin and London are seeking to ramp up NATO presence in the region to undercut Trump’s security argument. A German proposal involves a joint NATO mission dubbed ‘Arctic Sentry,’ Bloomberg reported, citing officials familiar with the discussions. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is expected to discuss the issue with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week.

“I want to discuss on my trip how we can best bear this responsibility in NATO,” Germany’s top diplomat told journalists on Sunday.

According to The Telegraph, British officials have also met with their counterparts from Germany and France in recent days to draw up plans for a possible NATO mission in Greenland. The proposals were discussed at a NATO meeting on Thursday, the paper said.

Options suggested by London include military exercises, intelligence sharing, targeted defense spending, and a full-scale troop deployment to Greenland, The Telegraph added, noting that the planning remains at an early stage.

Trump stated on Saturday that the US would acquire Greenland “whether they like it or not,” warning that he could accomplish this “the hard way.” While media outlets have said the US was considering purchasing the island and offering its residents financial incentives, the White House has declined to definitively rule out the use of military force.

Coast Guard Seized $4 Billion Worth of Narcotics in Record-Setting Year

USCG forces operating in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean last year achieved the largest annual maritime drug interdiction results in service history, seizing more than 511,000 pounds of narcotics valued at more than $3.8 billion. Officials said the seizures prevented more than 193 million potentially lethal doses from reaching the U.S., adding that counter-drug and law enforcement operations saved American taxpayers over $10 billion in avoided costs—including over $2.3 billion in health care costs just from cocaine interdictions.

A USCG spokesperson told Military.com that the service’s average annual seizure weight prior to 2025 was 167,000 pounds, with one kilo of cocaine worth $16,588.

“The men and women of the Coast Guard delivered extraordinary results for our Nation in 2025,” said Adm. Kevin E. Lunday, acting commandant, in a statement on Friday. “From securing the border and interdicting illegal drugs to facilitating maritime commerce and responding rapidly to crises, their success is driving the momentum we carry into 2026.”

Cocaine Interdictions

USCG officials credit different operations and vessels that resulted in a record-setting year of maritime accomplishments.

One operation, called Operation Pacific Viper, launched in August 2025 and sent U.S. forces to the Eastern Pacific to stop cartels and criminal organizations by interdicting drugs and illegal aliens before reaching domestic shores. The operation maintained pressure on criminal subjects by integrating cutters, aircraft, unmanned systems and specialized forces in various maritime zones.

In about a two-month span, Operation Pacific Viper had successfully resulted in the seizure of more than 100,000 pounds of cocaine—an average of more than 1,600 pounds interdicted daily. The seizures led to U.S. apprehension of 86 individuals suspected of narco-trafficking behaviors.

Rear Adm. Jeffrey Novak, deputy commander of U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area, said in October that the seizures in that region marked a “remarkable achievement."

Also in August, the Coast Guard’s Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron, known as HITRON, conducted its 1,000th counter-narcotics interdiction. The mission led to the successful use of airborne force to disable a narco-smuggling vessel in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, adding to the more than $2.1 billion in illicit drugs interdicted in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean by HITRON last year.

In the interview, conducted during Netanyahu’s visit to Mar‑a‑Lago about two weeks ago, the prime minister publicly revealed for the first time that he will not seek a full renewal of the annual $3.8 billion security aid package set to expire in 2028. “I want to reduce military aid within the next 10 years,” he said, answering “yes” when asked if his intention was to zero out dependence. In discussions between Netanyahu and Trump at Mar‑a‑Lago, teams were agreed on to negotiate future aid.

Netanyahu explained that Israel has “matured” and developed impressive economic capabilities, with the economy expected to reach $1 trillion within the coming decade. “We want to be as independent as possible,” Netanyahu stressed, adding that he will continue “to fight for the loyalty and support of the American people” — but greater independence could also help in the battle against the “propaganda war” against Israel.

Senator Lindsey Graham, chairman of the U.S. Senate subcommittee responsible for military assistance, welcomed Netanyahu’s remarks and said he will introduce a proposal to dramatically accelerate the timeline for ending the aid. “The aid we have provided to Israel was an excellent investment that strengthened the IDF, shared technology, and made their military more effective — to the benefit of the United States,” Graham wrote on X.

What’s behind Netanyahu’s statement?

Netanyahu did not make these comments in a vacuum, but against the backdrop of concern in Israel that, in the current U.S. political climate, Trump may not — and perhaps may not want to — pass another broad security assistance agreement like the one signed under President Barack Obama in 2016, which took effect in 2018 and is due to expire in 2028.

It appears Netanyahu wanted to get ahead of the issue, as there are two opposing blocs within American public opinion and society regarding continued U.S. security aid to Israel. One is the radical left, including figures such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, who oppose aid on ideological grounds, arguing against American weapons being used in attacks on civilians and occupation.

The other is the “America First” faction within the MAGA movement of Trump supporters, a isolationist strain that argues: we shouldn’t be financing anyone’s security and we want returns. This is how it plays out with Ukraine and minerals agreements, and with Europe, which the U.S. is unwilling to fund militarily while it invests little in its own defense and relies on Washington to protect it. The comments were also made amid concerns that it will be very difficult to pass another large aid agreement in Congress in the current climate, as there is opposition within both the Republican and Democratic parties. There have always been isolationist elements in the Republican Party, but their influence is growing.

It is important to note that aid is not expected to immediately drop to zero, but will gradually shrink on the one hand and shift toward specific projects and long‑term cooperation on the other. Netanyahu speaks of gradualism because Israel still depends on American aid. The IDF needs those dollars and cannot immediately wean itself off them — it requires time to adapt. The faster the reduction, the greater the potential burden on Israeli citizens.

A noteworthy point is that Netanyahu — who says Trump is the best friend Israel has had in the White House — is declaring his intention to reduce U.S. security aid to zero. The question arises: why did Israel receive its most generous deal under a less friendly administration like Obama’s, and why is Israel now offering to reduce security aid after October 7 and the multi‑front war?

In fact, facing these threats it would be reasonable for Israel to seek additional aid — as it has increased its own defense budget — but Netanyahu apparently concluded that the chances of receiving an increase, or at least the same amount, are not high, and chose instead to move toward Trump. This may also relate to Israel’s bitter experience in efforts to reduce tariffs that Trump imposed on it.

Yoram Ettinger, an expert on U.S.–Israel relations and former counselor at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, emphasized that the $3.8 billion in American aid generates an unusually high return for Americans — multiplying export and employment in the U.S. According to Ettinger, in 2018 Israel was the first country to use the F‑35 in operational missions at a time when U.S. experts said the F‑35 was destined to fail.

However, “the Israeli combat laboratory” (along with manufacturer Lockheed Martin) overcame critical faults, improved performance, and in 2025 contributed approximately $40 billion in exports, $72 billion in annual economic output, and $173 billion in pending orders, in addition to 290,000 jobs in the F‑35 production process. This economic output contributes billions of dollars in corporate and employee tax revenues to the U.S. Treasury.

American aid also saves the U.S. billions in research and development. “Every day Israel transfers to aircraft manufacturers and a dozen other weapons producers in the U.S. operational lessons, maintenance and repairs — saving the U.S. defense industries between 10 and 20 years of R&D that would otherwise cost billions of dollars,” Ettinger explained. “For example, the R&D cost of the F‑35 is $55 billion. Israel’s contribution to upgrading U.S. weapons systems enhances U.S. competitiveness in the global market and increases U.S. exports and employment.”

Undeterred by the immense challenge, their objective remained resolute: to topple the oppressive Shah regime and forge a path toward freedom and democracy in Iran. With unwavering determination, the founders of the MEK embarked on an arduous and treacherous voyage guided by principles that broke new ground in Iranian history.

Over the years, the MEK founders diligently cultivated the organization’s ranks, recruiting influential intellectuals and elites from Iranian society. They imparted upon them the organization’s core principles, which would later shape Iran’s foremost opposition movement. However, the burgeoning freedom movement caught the attention of the SAVAK, which arrested the founders in 1971 and tortured them brutally.

The merciless SAVAK subjected him to unimaginable brutality in a desperate attempt to extract information regarding the whereabouts of Hanifnejad and other prominent MEK leaders.

“They tortured him for one month, and he didn’t give them any information. They burned him so badly that his skin and flesh were disfigured. He had to undergo surgery three times before he could walk again. And he couldn’t even stand anymore,” Hayati said. “When they brought Badizadegan to our cell, he couldn’t stand. It was typical savagery of the Savak.”

However, the MEK founders refused to yield in their fight for the people’s freedom. Not having been able to break their will, the Shah regime eventually executed them on May 25, 1972, along with Mahmood Asgarizadeh and Abdol Rasool Mesginfam, two members of the MEK Central Committee. They paid the ultimate price, sacrificing their lives to safeguard the rights of their fellow citizens, ensuring that the flame of resistance burned brightly. Following their martyrdom, Massoud Rajavi assumed leadership of the MEK, carrying the torch of their unwavering dedication forward.

The sacrifices made by the MEK founders remain an enduring testament to their unwavering determination and unwavering loyalty, continuing to inspire Iranians worldwide even today. The activities of the Resistance Units serve as a powerful testament to their enduring influence, serving as a wellspring of inspiration for the Iranian people and the younger generation alike.

In the aftermath of 9/11, the Bush administration has pursued a robust and aggressive foreign policy. The invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have not only placed the Bush administration in conflict with longstanding U. S. allies and the majority of global public opinion, but it has also found itself in an awkward position vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic of Iran, the dominant regional power in Southwest Asia and nemesis of the United States following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Since the Revolution, U. S.-Iranian relations have been suspicious, hostile, and at times violent. From a historical perspective, it is increasingly evident that the unseating of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the U. S.'s close ally of more than three decades, was a watershed event with ramifications that continue to affect Iran, Southwest Asia, and the United States. Today, the pursuit of U. S. interests and the quest for regional stability—in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf, the Caspian Sea, and Central Asia—leads in numerous and overlapping paths squarely back to Iran.

The Bush Doctrine is defined by an emphasis on the right of the United States to use preemptive force against terrorists and their state sponsors; it has at its core a moral worldview that starkly contrasts good versus evil, and it makes no distinction between those who carry out acts of terrorism and those who harbor terrorists.1 The consequences in U. S. foreign policy have included an aversion to nuance in favor of "moral clarity," and President Bush's message to the rest of the world that "either you are either with us, or you are with the terrorists."2 In this context, it is no surprise that the Bush administration's approach to Iran has shown little appreciation for the impact of its actions upon the competition for political power in Iran today between radical and modernist Islamists—two prominent factions within the ruling clergy that disagree profoundly on the role of Islam in society.

The significance of the differences between radical and modernist Islamists is crucial due to the de facto compression of all political interaction in Iran after 1979 into the only remaining framework and discourse: Islamism, or the use of the religion of Islam as a basis for political mobilization. Political agendas and policymaking among the clerical elite in contemporary Iran are therefore shaped by factional differences rooted in Islamist ideology, which are of great relevance to U. S.-Iranian relations. The radical Islamists are widely referred to in the West as "conservatives" because of their adherence to dogmatic Islamic extremism, and they maintain a hold on the Islamic Republic's unelected but dominant centers of power. They also generally oppose normalized relations with the U. S. The modernist Islamists are widely referred to in the West as "reformists" due to their opposition to the monopoly on religious interpretation and political power claimed by the radicals. They favor greater democratization and the restoration of normal ties with the United States as part of a broader reversal of Iran's post-1979 isolation. However, the factionalization of Islamists in Iran transcends this simplified explanation. A more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of Islamism in Iran—one that accounts for the roots of the radicals and modernists as well as subgroups within those factions—is warranted and will be offered in the following analysis.

Despite clear indications that the continued political viability of the modernists benefits U. S. interests directly, the Bush administration's hardline posture toward Iran since 2002 has helped to erode the ability of the modernists to argue for transparency and moderation in Iran's foreign and domestic policies. Inflammatory U. S. actions in recent years, such as the notorious "axis of evil" accusation during Bush's 2003 State of the Union address, have provided the radical Islamists with a powerful political weapon to use against their modernist rivals. By increasing its pressure on Iran to the point where all factions of the Iranian regime perceive an immediate national security threat, the Bush administration has facilitated the reversal of the fortunes of the modernists [End Page 159] and the seizing of the political initiative—and Iran's foreign policy—by the very radical Islamists it seeks to sideline.

U. S.-Iranian relations today are not unlike the proverbial elephant in the room. Most aspects of U. S. interests in Southwest Asia are affected by it, but the question has been effectively ignored by the Bush administration. Addressing the U. S.-Iranian relationship to more effectively achieve post-9/11 U. S. foreign policy goals is a process that transcends the trite framework of containing Iranian radicals or engaging Iranian reformers. Rather, it requires the development of a coherent conceptual and strategic framework by U. S. policymakers upon which to base any future interaction with Iran. For policymakers and interested observers, this implies a sustained effort to appreciate the historical importance of Iran's ongoing political evolution and its consequences for Iranian foreign policy and U. S. interests in Southwest Asia.This article will seek to shed light upon the connections between these dimensions by tracing the foundations and evolution of Iran's internal political dynamics along with the impact and outcomes of the Bush administration's policy regarding Iran since 9/11.
