This news has to make the Democratic Party very unhappy this morning. They've spent the past year attacking the Trump administration as racist, bigoted, xenophobic, and Nazi-like over its immigration policy, accusing ICE and Border Patrol of rounding up "brown people" indiscriminately for deportation.

Despite that, President Trump's approval rating among Hispanics is skyrocketing, according to Rasmussen.

This shows that Hispanics understand illegal immigration and how inherently dangerous and unfair it is. It's also why the majority of mugshots of those arrested in and around Minneapolis are of white people.

Hispanics are now roughly one-fifth of American voters, and even Newsweek can't ignore that they're trending Republican.

Just one year ago, on the eve of President Donald Trump’s historic return to the White House, the failed status quo in Washington was taking its toll on America. Outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the most destructive political duo in history, turned out not only to be incompetent, but also hopelessly weak and in the pocket of left-wing anti-American special interests. Everywhere you looked, the Biden-Harris Administration was either allowing major problems to fester or creating new crises by design. They opened the border, ignored the drug epidemic, exploded federal spending, embraced wokeism and cancel culture, and damaged America’s prestige around the globe.

At seemingly every fork in the road, the Biden crew chose the wrong direction for the American people. Joe Biden – perhaps unknowingly – pushed us toward socialism, globalism, and anything else that defied common sense. In the lead up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration, America was hurting – and there was no sugarcoating it. Our beloved country desperately needed a change agent in the Oval Office after four years of malaise, and Trump filled the void with flying colors once again, just as he did in 2016 to spare us from a third Barack Obama term in the form of Hillary Clinton. Because of Trump’s heroics in 2024, the broken status quo in D.C. has been under assault for the past year like never before due to an avalanche of common sense and an agenda that always puts America first. First and foremost, at our southern border, Biden took a bad situation and poured gasoline on it. Upon taking office, Trump immediately took control of the unsustainable situation and closed the border with the sense of urgency required.

After dismantling the border catastrophe, the Trump team turned its attention to law enforcement, deportations, and arresting criminal illegal immigrants. By doing this, not only is Trump making America safe again, but he’s also smoking out bad actors on the left and exposing how critically important Biden’s border invasion was to the Democratic Party’s plan for future survival. By doing the hard thing – taking on entrenched power and establishment group think – the truth has been revealed for all to see.

Trump also took office with a mandate to focus on fiscal responsibility. Trump had the backbone to empower the Department of Government Efficiency to start changing the “drunken sailor” spending mindset in Congress and steer it toward transparency and regular order. Additionally, the Trump Administration is also enacting rescissions packages, streamlining the size and scope of the bureaucracy, and exposing fraud and the theft of taxpayer dollars that may end up being one of the largest criminal enterprises in our 250-year history.

Federal spending has skyrocketed from $4 trillion to $7 trillion annually in just five short years, so it’s not exactly a shock to see the infuriating waste, fraud, and abuse that’s being uncovered in Minnesota. The question now becomes how many other states engaged in this level of thievery using similar fraudulent methods. Rest assured, this fearless president will follow the money wherever it leads because hardworking taxpayers deserve no less. By the time Trump is done with the investigations, trillions in fraud could very well be discovered nationwide and this should force long overdue social safety net reforms.

On foreign policy and national security, Trump is also taking on the failed status quo in righteous fashion. The culture inside the Pentagon has taken a 180-degree turn to ensure America is once again an impenetrable shining city on a hill equipped with a lethal military force second to none. Biden and Harris were advocates for allowing our armed forces to become politically correct and soft. China and Russia noticed and took full advantage of it. However, they also noticed when Trump changed the name of the Department of Defense back to the Department of War; this sent the unmistakable signal that America was back in the business of peace through strength.

It’s difficult to fathom that just a year ago Houthi terrorists were wreaking havoc across the Middle East, Iran’s nuclear capabilities were operating undeterred, Israel was alienated by the Democratic Party, and Venezuela’s Nicholas Maduro was freely running drugs on the open seas to poison and kill Americans by the thousands. Thanks to Trump, the practice of America leading from behind has come to an abrupt halt.

After one year back on the job, Trump’s rescue mission to save America has been a resounding success. The key to it all is employing common sense in a fog of bureaucratic morass and having the guts to speak truth to power. Whether it’s fair trade and unprecedented tariff revenue, lower taxes and regulations, standing with police and for law and order, advocating for the SAVE Act to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, or calling for a new census that doesn’t count illegal immigrants, this president is decimating the failed status quo brick by brick – and he still has three years to go.

OPINION:

In 2024, Republicans across the country campaigned and won on the issues of election integrity and fiscal responsibility. With just about nine months to go until the all-important midterm elections, it’s time for decisive action.

The American people are sick and tired of lax voting laws that don’t require an ID to cast a ballot and don’t even require proof of citizenship to register to vote. It goes without saying that mail-in voting has remained a glaring problem since the arrival of COVID-19, even though, for decades, bipartisan figures such as former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker have agreed that the practice invites widespread fraud.

Like with so many other issues, the broken status quo in our elections can’t go unaddressed and immediate reform is being demanded.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that secure elections are critical to any thriving democracy, and the United States is no exception. That’s why, according to polling data, 8 in 10 Americans support commonsense reforms such as Voter ID and the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, which would make sure that only citizens are allowed to register to vote.

Just as important as securing our elections with a sense of urgency is doing something consequential to confront our national embarrassment — a $38 trillion debt — an absolute must. Over the past quarter-century, career politicians in Congress have developed a repulsive addiction to reckless spending, and it must stop now or our country will go bankrupt.

It’s really that simple: The legislative branch controls our nation’s purse strings, and President Trump has said he wants a balanced budget and would sign such an agreement if it is sent to his desk.

That being said, it’s not as straightforward as it was when House Speaker Newt Gingrich made the concept of a balanced budget a reality in the late 1990s. Today, hardly any Democratic members of Congress in either chamber give a hoot about the national debt crisis or our beloved country’s dire financial situation.

Nearly as bad, far too many Republicans talk a good game about cutting federal spending, only to arrive in Washington and morph into spineless political squishes once they meet their first deep-pocketed lobbyist.

It’s welcome news that Republicans in Congress are getting back to regular order and transparency in the appropriations process and working toward the goal of making multitrillion-dollar omnibus bill heists a thing of the past. However, turning the Titanic away from the fiscal iceberg that’s rapidly approaching has been more difficult than anyone could have imagined.

Frankly, passing all the appropriations bills is a positive sign, but going forward, the focus must be on enacting them on time and dramatically shrinking their price tag across the board, and then having the courage to ensure the future solvency of Social Security and Medicare. There’s no way to sugarcoat the mess we’re in. America has gone from $5 trillion in debt to $38 trillion in just 25 years.

So, to all the uniparty career politicians on Capitol Hill who have allowed the drunken spending spree to go on unchecked for so long, the failure to act now is the legacy you’re leaving behind. To the small band of conservative heroes in Congress (you know who you are) who wake up every day sounding the alarm and fighting the lonely fight for fiscal sanity, hardworking American families hear you and stand with you.

Whether we like it or not, these aren’t normal times. Our election system must be fortified and the size and scope of the federal government slashed and reformed without delay. America survived before the Senate filibuster, and it will survive after it.

Democratic filibuster abuse must be addressed now. At a minimum, existing Senate rules must be enforced so obstructionist Democrats are required to talk in order to slow down the passage of voter ID laws that enjoy the massive support of Americans from across the political spectrum.

The argument that every state can be trusted to run its own elections as it sees fit is no longer valid, because blue state after blue state has demonstrated little interest in making long-overdue election integrity reforms. History has proved that sometimes the federal government must step in when states are refusing to do what’s right. This is one of those moments.

Republican leadership in the Senate must come to grips with the fact that the familiar excuse of “Democrats won’t let us do it” no longer passes muster. Our country has a $38 trillion national debt and an election system in which people are losing faith. Time is of the essence, and November will be here before you know it.

President Donald Trump said he is moving forward with the construction of a large new ballroom complex at the White House, emphasizing that it's "too late" to go back, even as the project faces a legal challenge from historic preservation advocates.

In a statement, Trump said the ballroom — which he called one of the largest and most elaborate of its kind in the world — will cost between $300 million and $400 million but that it will be funded entirely with private money, not taxpayer dollars.

Trump said the ballroom is being done with the design, consent, and approval of the "highest levels" of the U.S. military and Secret Service.

NASA Science Flights Venture to Improve Severe Winter Weather Warnings

Jan 27, 2026

A team of NASA scientists deployed on an international mission designed to better understand severe winter storms.

The North American Upstream Feature-Resolving and Tropopause Uncertainty Reconnaissance Experiment, or NURTURE, is an airborne campaign that uses a suite of remote sensing instruments to collect atmospheric data on winter weather with a goal of improving the models that feed storm forecasts.

This combination of instruments will also serve as a proxy to demonstrate the potential to collect similar observations from space.

On Jan. 24, the research team departed from NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, aboard the center’s Gulfstream III aircraft (G-III) en route to Goose Bay, Canada.

For nearly a month, the plane will be making flights stretching from the Northern Atlantic Ocean over Canada through the Northeast United States, measuring moisture, clouds, and ozone as winter storms develop.

The second phase of the campaign, scheduled to fly out of Langley next year, will serve as the inaugural mission of NASA’s new airborne science laboratory, a Boeing 777 These flights will cover a larger range of 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) and use a larger suite of instruments.

Researchers will collect detailed observations of the atmosphere over Europe, Greenland, the North Atlantic Ocean, Canada, the majority of of the U.S., and much of the Arctic Ocean.

“Part of NASA’s role is to leverage our expertise and resources for the benefit of humankind – with innovation always being at our core,” said Will McCarty, weather program manager and program scientist at NASA’s Headquarters in Washington.

“The NURTURE campaign is doing exactly that by outfitting our aircraft with one-of-a-kind instruments designed to put our science data into action to understand dangerous weather events before, and as they form.”

As the NASA G-III flies over Canada, a parallel companion mission led by a team of international partners called the North Atlantic Waveguide, Dry Intrusion, and Downstream Impact Campaign (NAWDIC) will be operating out of Shannon, Ireland.

Meanwhile, a third airborne mission led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will be studying how moisture is transported from the tropics to the Western U.S.

By combining the data collected during these campaigns, scientists will be able to track weather systems as they interact and intersect globally to understand the large-scale flows and small-scale features that drive high-impact winter weather events.

“These storms are not forecasted very accurately,” said Amin Nehrir, a research scientist at NASA Langley and co-investigator for the NURTURE mission.

“Space observations of high latitudes in the Arctic lack the sensitivity needed to gather accurate data in such a dry, atmospheric environment.

In lower latitudes, we benefit from observations from radiosondes, surface networks, and satellite observations. We are using cutting-edge technology beyond those that we have in space to get a better snapshot of atmospheric dynamics.”

Examples of severe winter weather events include cold air outbreaks, windstorms, hazardous seas, snow and ice storms, sea ice breakup, and extreme precipitation.

Data from the NURTURE mission will be used to inform first responders, decision makers, and the public sooner while also demonstrating the potential for NASA’s remote weather sensor capabilities to be developed for use on future space-based missions.

“Effects from severe weather have significant costs that threaten lives and national security by destabilizing supply chains and damaging infrastructure,” said Steven Cavallo, principal investigator for NURTURE and lead scientist at the University of Oklahoma, School of Meteorology.

The NURTURE mission is funded by NASA’s Earth Science Division and managed by researchers at NASA Langley and NASA Ames in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma.

Webb Data Reveals Dark Matter

This image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, containing nearly 800,000 galaxies, is overlaid with a map of dark matter, represented in blue.

Brighter blue areas indicate a higher density of dark matter. Researchers used Webb data to find the dark matter — which is invisible — via its gravitational influence on regular matter.

The area of sky shown here is 0.54 square degrees (about 2½ times the size of the full Moon) and located in the constellation Sextans. Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) peered at this region for a total of about 255 hours.

Dark matter doesn’t emit, reflect, absorb, or even block light, and is therefore not visible to the human eye or traditional telescopes.

But it does interact with the universe through gravity, and large clumps or clusters of dark matter have enough mass to curve space itself. Light traveling to Earth from distant galaxies becomes slightly distorted as it passes through the curved fabric of spacetime.

In some cases, the warping is significant enough that it is apparent to the naked eye, almost as if the galaxy were being viewed through a warped windowpane, an effect called strong gravitational lensing.

In the case of the dark matter map shown here, scientists inferred dark matter’s distribution by relying instead on an effect called weak gravitational lensing, which leads to much more subtle distortions of the light from thousands of galaxies.

The dark matter in this area of sky was also mapped in 2007 using data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

The Webb map contains about 10 times more galaxies than do maps of the area made by ground-based observatories and twice as many as Hubble’s map.

It reveals new clumps of dark matter and captures a higher-resolution view compared to the Hubble map.

Both the Hubble and Webb dark matter maps are part of a project called the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). The full COSMOS “field” is 2 square degrees (about 10 times the size of the full Moon) and has been imaged by at least 15 telescopes in space and on the ground.

Observing the same region with many different telescopes allows scientists to combine complementary views to understand how galaxies grow and how dark matter influences their evolution. Only Webb and Hubble data have been used to map dark matter in the region.

To refine measurements of the distance to many galaxies for the map, the team used Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), designed and managed through launch by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, along with other space- and ground-based telescopes.

The wavelengths that MIRI detects also make it adept at detecting galaxies obscured by cosmic dust clouds.

The James Webb Space Telescope is solving mysteries in our solar system, looking beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probing the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.

Webb is an international program led by NASA with its partners, ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency).

Webb’s MIRI was developed through a 50-50 partnership between NASA and ESA. A division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, JPL led the U.S. contribution to MIRI.

JPL also led development of MIRI’s cryocooler, done in collaboration with Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach, California, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

NASA, Partners Advance LISA Prototype Hardware

Engineers and scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, completed tests this month on a second early version of a key element of the upcoming LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission.

The LISA mission, a collaboration between ESA (the European Space Agency) and NASA, will use infrared lasers to detect gravitational waves, or ripples in the fabric of space-time.

The tests involved the frequency reference system, delivered by BAE Systems, that will help control the lasers connecting LISA’s three spacecraft.

The lasers must be finely tuned to make precise measurements — to within a trillionth of a meter, called a picometer.

The team tested the first version of the system in May 2025.

“The extensive round of checkouts on the frequency reference system last year were very successful,” said Ira Thorpe, the project scientist for LISA at NASA Goddard.

“This second unit is identical, so our assessments this time around were less intense and preface a future cross-check of the two, which is the gold-standard for checking the stability of the system overall.”

In addition to the laser system, NASA is contributing the telescopes, devices to manage the buildup of onboard electrical charge, and the framework scientists will need to process the data the mission will generate.

NASA’s contributions are part of the agency’s efforts to innovate on ambitious science missions that will help us better understand how the universe works. LISA will also offer a major advancement in multimessenger astronomy, which is how scientists explore cosmic signals other than light.

The three LISA spacecraft will fly in a vast triangular formation that follows Earth as it orbits the Sun. Each arm of the triangle will stretch 1.6 million miles (2.5 million kilometers).

Each spacecraft will contain two free-floating cubes inside called proof masses. Arriving gravitational waves from throughout the universe will minutely change the lengths of the triangle’s arms.

The lasers connecting the cubes will measure changes in their separation to within a distance smaller than a helium atom.

The enormous scale of the triangle will enable LISA to detect gravitational waves that cannot be found with ground-based facilities, such as those generated when massive black holes in the centers of galaxies merge.

Scientists can use the data to learn about a source’s distance and physical properties.

The LISA mission is slated to launch in the mid-2030s.

Upcoming Artemis II Space Mission Has Multiple Yuma Proving Ground Connections

Jan. 28, 2026

NASA announced the first crewed mission of the Artemis II will fly around the moon after an opportune launch window sometime between early February and the end of April.

The mission will culminate in the deployment of the Orion space capsule's parachutes, which were rigorously evaluated at U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, through multiple developmental tests between 2011 and 2018.

The mission's pilot is slated to be Astronaut Victor Glover, who witnessed multiple developmental tests of the Capsule Parachute Assembly System at the proving ground.

Glover and his crewmates went into a prelaunch health stabilization, or quarantine, Jan. 23 in preparation for the mission.

Most people associate space travel with tremendous speed, but safe deceleration is just as important for the astronauts on board. A spacecraft must travel at approximately 20,000 mph to escape Earth's gravity.

By contrast returning its occupants safely to the ground the same capsule needs to be decelerated from as fast as 24,500 mph to speeds slower than most people drive their cars on residential streets.

Meanwhile, the extreme friction generated as the capsule hurtles back into the Earth's atmosphere at such tremendous speed causes its exterior to heat to more than 4,000 degrees.

Safely landing under these conditions is a tremendous undertaking and large parachutes play an important role in accomplishing it.

The Capsule Parachute Assembly System's cord is made of Kevlar, a strong synthetic fiber used in body armor; the change from steel was made following testing at Yuma Proving Ground.

Each main parachute consists of 10,000 square feet of fabric. The system is designed to deploy sequentially, passing through two stages before fully opening.

On reentry, two drogue parachutes deploy to slow the hurtling 10-ton capsule before three main parachutes bring it down to a languid landing speed of 17 mph.

Further, the parachute system is designed with redundancies to ensure a safe landing for astronauts, even in extreme scenarios such as two parachutes failing or a catastrophic mishap shortly after takeoff.

In many of the tests at the proving ground, evaluators intentionally rigged one or more of the Capsule Parachute Assembly System's parachutes to not deploy, which tested if the remaining functioning chutes could withstand the additional stress of speed and mass that the failure would cause.

In addition to outfitting the test vehicle with far more instrumentation and cameras than would be possible if it were coming from space, testing over land at Yuma Proving Ground made recovery and examination of the parachutes easier than when the capsule lands in the ocean following a real space mission.

The years of hard work paid off. Following a Nov. 16, 2022, launch the uncrewed Orion took a 1.4-million-mile round-trip journey that took it past the moon, reentering the atmosphere and splashing down safely in the Pacific Ocean after the Capsule Parachute Assembly System deployed without a hitch Dec. 11, 2022.

Yuma Proving Ground has hosted developmental testing for NASA since the earliest days of the space program.

The precursor to the lunar rover used during the last moon landings in 1971 and 1972, dubbed the "mobility test article," was tested at the proving ground in 1966.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the surface of the moon, visited the proving ground in 1971 to witness developmental testing of the AH-56 Cheyenne Attack Helicopter.

After days of mounting pressure, Maine’s senior U.S. Sen. Susan Collins called on the Trump administration Tuesday to pause its immigration enforcement efforts here and in Minnesota, where two protesters have been killed by federal agents. Her statement came on the same day protesters visited her Portland office, which resulted in nine arrests for criminal trespassing.

Maine public schools in areas where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been patrolling have started to to see impacts in the form of decreased attendance and increased anxiety among some students and parents. Portland, which has a large immigration population, is among the school districts considering offering a remote learning option on a temporary basis.

Meanwhile, lawyers are reporting that some clients who have been detained have struggled to get a bond hearing from the U.S. Department of Justice, even though a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that certain immigrants in government custody are entitled to such hearing. Immigration court judges across the country have been instructed to disregard such declarations.

The list is growing of Maine businesses that plan to participate in Friday’s nationwide shutdown in protest of ICE activity.

Arcana yoga and massage studiois one of several Portland businesses that have posted their plans on Instagram in an effort to encourage others to join.

“Hey Folks, we will be closed on Friday 1/30 in Solidarity with the general strike!” the post reads. “Be brave, Be wise, Be aware and please local businesses close in solidarity. This is not like previous actions. This is a well organized national strike. One day of profit is not as important as this historically very effective non-violent action!!!”

Nash & Co., Flatiron Coffee Bar, Another Round, Izakaya Minato, Tandem Coffee & Bakery, Speckled Axe, Sun Oriental Market and Mayhem Portland also have posted plans to be closed in support of the immigrant community and to protest ICE.

The strike,organized at NationalShutdown.us, is billed as “ICE OUT! Nationwide Shutdown! No work. No school. No shopping.”

As part of the shutdown, social media posts show that a protest event is being planned for 3 p.m. Friday at Monument Square in Portland.

But while many local businesses plan to close on Friday, some will remain open because closing isn’t feasible for a variety of reasons, said Amy Landry, board president of Portland Buy Local. Many are reaching out in other ways.

“Whether open or closed, businesses are donating profits, gathering supplies, and volunteering with local nonprofits,” Landry said. “What we’re seeing is that local businesses are supporting our community in ways that feel right to them.”

Things between Tehran and Washington are moving fast according to an eerily familiar pattern hearkening back to the lead-up to the 12-day June war, when there was some wrangling over negotiations - and talk of good faith efforts at dialogue - just before the US greenlighted a surprise Israeli attack which also saw US entry into the conflict by the close of it (whereupon nuclear facilities were hit by American bombers).

"Our stance is clear," Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Wednesday as the US has expressed the desire to strike a deal. "Negotiations don’t go along with threats, and talks can only take place when there are no longer menaces and excessive demands."

Separately, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday that Tehran supports any process "within the framework of international law" that helps avert war. The Saudis have joined the UAE in declaring that the US cannot use its airspace for aggression against Iran.

This shouldn't pose too big a challenge for the Pentagon, however, which has a build-up of assets at its Qatar base and with a carrier group near Iran in regional waters.
