"Instead, we asked whether we could design the drone itself around the way humans perceive motion. This idea of low visibility through persistent motion is something few people have explored."

That distinction matters because drones are increasingly used to watch wildlife, check aging infrastructure, or survey wetlands, but their mere presence changes the behavior of whatever they're observing.

Birds scatter, animals flee, people act differently. A drone that's hard to spot could do the same job without that side effect.

Prior attempts at motion-based concealment offer useful context here.

The Northwestern paper points to an earlier project nicknamed the Boomerang Drone, covered in a 2006 New York Times Magazine piece, which tried a similar high-speed rotation trick but couldn't spin fast enough to fully exploit the blur effect, leaving it largely visible.

The paper authors also trace the broader idea of active concealment back to the "Yehudi light," a counter-illumination project developed by the National Defense Research Committee in 1944 to hide Allied sea-search aircraft from enemy view.

The Phantom Twist itself takes a very different shape from those earlier attempts.

Rather than a typical quadcopter with four separate rotors, it runs on a single motor and a single propeller, with the propeller spinning one way while the rest of the drone's body spins the opposite way.

"For a typical quadrotor drone, the propellers are spinning, but the robot is stationary," Rubenstein explains. "So, you still see its body. For our drone, the whole thing is rotating, so there are no stationary parts."

To reach that layout, the team's computer model generated roughly 20,000 possible drone configurations capable of stable flight, then used artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms to repeatedly rearrange the motor, propeller, circuit board, counterweight, and batteries.

Each design was simulated spinning mid-flight and overlaid on 100 real-world backgrounds, then scored by a perceptual model built to mimic human vision, where a lower score meant better camouflage.

The 500 best-scoring designs were run through the optimizer again to squeeze out further gains before a final version was built.

Emma Alexander, an assistant professor of computer science and one of the study's co-authors, explains the underlying physics. "The human eye takes time to accumulate signals, roughly analogous to the exposure time of a camera," she says.

"When an object spins quickly, we perceive it as blurring out and losing distinct features. Because this new drone is almost entirely transparent, its few opaque components are visually averaged with the background for an overall appearance of a slight haze."

According to the paper's visibility metric, the finished drone is about 10 times harder to spot than a standard quadcopter.

But the spinning trick has real limits that make this drone far from being completely unnoticeable.

The propeller still makes an audible whir that gives the drone away even when the eye can't, and its support wires and rods remain partly visible.

The paper's authors suggest future versions could lean on more transparent materials and quieter propulsion, edging the drone ever closer to true – and somewhat scary – invisibility.

After all, the same trick making a drone less impactful on wildlife could just as easily help it sneak around for reasons that aren't so friendly.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he is exploring the legal possibility of arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he travels to the city for the UN General Assembly in September.

Residents in Nanjo City, Okinawa, have been left intrigued after a mysterious luminous object was seen hovering above the sea on the evening of 6th July.

The unusual sighting, which lasted for approximately 20 minutes, prompted speculation online about the possibility of a UFO, although specialists have indicated that natural atmospheric phenomena or aircraft activity are more likely explanations.

The glowing object was first noticed at around 7.30pm in the eastern sky off Hyakuna Beach in Tamagusuku.

A 53-year-old self-employed local man, who had been at the shoreline intending to film the scenery, said he instead observed a bright light that appeared to split into two separate points before aligning side by side and then parting again while moving in the same direction.

He recorded the scene after becoming suspicious of the object’s behaviour.

According to the witness, the light did not appear to travel a significant distance but gradually intensified in brightness, giving the impression that it was burning above the horizon.

From his vantage point, the object seemed closer than Kudaka Island, located roughly five kilometres to the south-east. He admitted that he briefly wondered whether the phenomenon might be linked to an авиаtion incident.

A former director of the Ishigaki Island Astronomical Observatory said there were no particularly bright stars visible in that part of the sky at the time.

Loeb to Newsmax: Many UAPs Have Conventional Explanations

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb said Saturday that some of the unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, featured in a newly released government file dump likely have ordinary explanations, while others warrant further investigation because of their potential implications for national security and science.

Speaking on Newsmax TV's "Saturday Agenda," Loeb cautioned against assuming that every object shown in the released materials represents unexplained technology.

"Some of these are natural events," Loeb said.

He pointed to a widely circulated video of a star-shaped object, saying its appearance was likely caused by the camera rather than the object itself.

"The star-shaped object that you showed — that's a result of a diffraction pattern in the camera that is taking the image," he said.

Loeb added that some of the orb-like objects included in the files could also have conventional explanations, such as laser spots created by human technology or ball lightning, a rare atmospheric electrical phenomenon.

"There are also some of the orbs that may be a result of laser spots … or a result of ball lightning," he said.

Loeb said the challenge is distinguishing explainable events from those that remain genuinely anomalous.

"We are trying to separate the wheat from the chaff and advise the government how to get more information that will get to the bottom of it," he said.

He said a careful analysis of the government's UAP data could benefit both national security and scientific research.

According to Loeb, the two central questions are whether the objects represent potential security concerns and whether they could provide evidence that humanity is not alone in the universe.

"There are two subjects that are of importance to the American people," Loeb said. "That's national security, as well as, are we alone in the universe? Do we have a neighbor in our cosmic environment?"

Loeb said analyzing government data on anomalous objects could help answer both questions.

He also said officials within the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies remain uncertain about some of the reported phenomena.

"Frankly, the Pentagon, as well as the intelligence agencies, are puzzled about the properties of these objects," he said.

Loeb said the advisory effort he is involved with aims to examine the evidence methodically.

"My council will try to figure out, like in a detective story, what it's all about," he said.

He credited President Donald Trump's directive to review UAP records and declassify information that does not affect national security with making more material available for analysis.

Loeb emphasized that the newly released records represent "a mixed bag," with some cases likely explainable and others requiring additional investigation.

Famed UFO insider issues chilling claim about the next phase of disclosure: 'A new chapter for humanity'

The Trump administration is deliberately releasing only 'minor' UFO files while withholding far more significant evidence, according to one of the most prominent figures in the disclosure movement.

Dr Steven Greer, founder of The Disclosure Project and the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, told the Daily Mail he believes officials possess far more consequential material but have been advised to reveal it slowly as part of what he described as an 'acculturation process.'

'My understanding is that they've been advised to go slow on it, and to only release fairly much inconsequential material,' Greer said. 'I don't agree with that strategy.'

Greer, who has spent more than three decades encouraging military, intelligence and corporate insiders to come forward with information about unidentified aerial phenomena, argued the current releases are only the beginning of a much larger disclosure effort.

He believes the strategy is backfiring because the public expected far more than the three recent tranches of documents released by the administration.

'I think they're trying to do a slow roll,' he said. 'I think it's eroding trust in government.'

Despite his criticism of the rollout, Greer believes genuine disclosure could fundamentally reshape humanity's future by revealing technologies capable of solving some of the world's biggest challenges.

'I think it's a message of great hope,' he said. 'If it's handled properly, it would start a whole new chapter in human civilization.'

The Trump administration has released four tranches of UFO files since May 8, months after President Donald Trump ordered Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to declassify government records related to UFOs and alleged extraterrestrial activity.

The releases included striking images and transcripts linked to NASA's Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 missions.

One photo taken from the lunar surface appears to show three unexplained dots hovering in the dark sky above the moon.

Another document summarized statements from seven federal officers assigned to different teams who independently reported witnessing multiple unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) across the western US over two days in 2023.

Never-before-seen FBI and CIA reports detailing witness accounts have also been included, but Greer argued the material released so far represents only a fraction of what exists inside classified government programs.

He said he has spent decades collecting testimony from military personnel, intelligence officials and government insiders, building an archive that he believes contains far more consequential evidence than anything released publicly by the administration.

'The archive we have, it's 36 years of accumulated evidence and whistleblower testimony and videos and photos and documents and government documents from all over the world, is vastly more consequential than what they released in these last four tranches,' Greer said.

'We're trying to make sure that the public and also the political leaders have access to more material than they're seeing through these Department of War and White House releases to date.''

Greer said he believes additional records will eventually be made public, but suspects the administration intends to spread the disclosures over several years.

I think more will be coming,' he said. 'I think they're trying to do a slow roll, stretching out towards the end of the Trump administration.

One of Greer's biggest criticisms centers on what he believes is a misunderstanding of the objects appearing in many recent government disclosures.

He argued that not every craft documented in classified files is extraterrestrial, claiming some are advanced aircraft developed in secret by the US defense industry using technologies hidden from the public for decades.

'Since the late 1950s, we have mastered what's called electro-gravitic systems, which pop culture would call anti-gravity,' Greer said.

In reality, the majority of the UFOs seen are coming from the Lockheed Skunk Works, and Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon, and a few other prime contractors.

Greer, a retired emergency physician, said he believes the disclosure movement has reached a pivotal moment, but argued powerful interests continue to resist broader transparency.

Those concerns have intensified following the creation of a new White House advisory group examining UFO-related issues.

Greer alleged that some of the individuals involved have ties to organizations he believes have spent decades keeping information hidden from both the public and elected officials.

'I think it's a five-alarm fire,' he said. 'There are some very questionable characters who have been put on a White House advisory council for this.'

He also criticized the appointment of former Pentagon UFO investigator Lue Elizondo to a National Security Council role.

'The worst thing I've seen in 36 years of trying to resolve this problem has happened in the last 30 days,' Greer said, claiming several recent appointments have strengthened the influence of people connected to past secrecy efforts.

According to Greer, one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding UFO disclosure is the belief that presidents, cabinet officials and senior military leaders automatically have access to every classified program.

'Part of these problems is that they're all very, very new to the subject,' he said.

'I think the public makes the mistake of thinking, 'Well, you're the President or you're the Secretary of War, and you have full knowledge of this.'

That is not how this has been operating.

Greer claimed that alleged UFO-related programs have operated for decades outside normal government oversight, leaving even senior officials unaware of their existence.

'For the most part, oversight has not happened for quite some decades properly,' he said. 'The public expects these high officials to have full access to these files and information, when in reality they pretty much had to start at zero.'

Despite his criticism of the administration's approach, Greer said he believes disclosure is accelerating because more insiders are becoming willing to come forward.

He said his organization recently launched a worldwide appeal encouraging people working inside covert aerospace programs to disclose evidence they believe has been hidden from Congress and the public.

'We're encouraging them to defect with this positive proof of operations that have been run illegally,' Greer said.

Greer said he is also encouraged by conversations he has had with lawmakers serving on congressional oversight committees.

'They feel like this is sort of a slow roll, and they hope… they tell me they expect more,' he said.

While he acknowledged that many of his claims remain controversial, Greer maintained that disclosure is inevitable and argued that it has the potential to fundamentally change humanity's understanding of its place in the universe.

'If this is released properly, it's going to be quite clear to the public that we, humans, have figured out very advanced energy and propulsion systems that would absolutely replace the need for oil or gas,' he said.

CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA—President Donald Trump announced nearly $10 billion in investments into the defense industry in Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon at Sen. Dave McCormick’s (R-PA) Defense and Innovation Summit.

After arriving at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Trump joined McCormick, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and top defense, banking, and tech executives for a roundtable event, where he made the announcement.

“This afternoon, we’re announcing nearly $10 billion of new investments in our defense industrial base, right here in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and these investments will create more than 4,000 jobs,” he said.

“Pennsylvania workers will build the ships, submarines, trucks, weapons, and industries that will ensure America remains the strongest and most powerful nation in the history of the world. We’re doing better now than we’ve ever done,” the president added.

Among the investments are a $2.5 billion agreement between General Dynamics and Rhoades Industries in support of Navy submarine construction in Philadelphia, and new ship orders for the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), estimated to support more than 2,000 jobs with program costs valued at $1.5 billion.

Day & Zimmermann is receiving a “$2.3 billion contract to provide operations, maintenance, and modernization for the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada, delivered from its Philadelphia operations.”

Dozens of other investments are listed on a press release, available here, from McCormick’s office.

Trump later noted that defense spending in Pennsylvania has jumped about 20-25 percent since he returned to the presidency, and he believes the number will be about $19-$20 billion when including Wednesday’s announcement.

He touted that his administration has overseen $19.2 trillion in investments into the United States since returning to office in January 2025.

“We used to go million, then we went billion. Now we’re into the trillions. But there’s never been anything like it. The country is as hot as it’s ever been,” Trump said.

Trump lauded McCormick for organizing the major summit and noted that last July, he attended McCormick’s Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, where they announced a whopping 92 billion in investment into the Keystone State.

“Outstanding work on behalf of the incredible people of Pennsylvania,” Trump told McCormick, who was elected in 2024 and was pivotal to helping Republicans reclaim the U.S. Senate majority. “You know, he followed me along the campaign trail, and he had a tough race. It was a tough race. A lot of people wouldn’t have had the courage to do it. It takes guts to run for office. People don’t know that.”

“I think he’s a great guy, great, spectacular guy… But we’re here today to celebrate a colossal victory for this Commonwealth and for the entire nation,” he added.

McCormick thanked Trump for coming and said the president has a special affinity for Pennsylvania.

The resolution from the Black, Hispanic and progressive caucus chairs comes in response to the recent narrowing of the Voting Rights Act.

The leaders of several prominent House Democratic caucuses are proposing a Supreme Court overhaul as well as the Senate filibuster in response to the justices’ decision to narrow the 1965 Voting Rights Act earlier this year.

Their resolution obtained by POLITICO* calls for the expansion of the Supreme Court and to establish term limits and a code of ethics for justices. It also calls for the elimination of the 60-vote filibuster in the Senate.

While the resolution stands virtually no chance of adoption, it is the latest indicator of how the Congressional Black Caucus and other key Democrats want to respond to the April decision that cleared the way for Republican states to redraw their congressional maps and eliminate majority-minority districts. The measure also lays down a marker for progressives — who will be emboldened next Congress after defeating several incumbents in New York City on Tuesday — as they seek to influence the Democratic agenda.

“The Court’s far-right supermajority poses a serious threat to any future attempts by Congress to realize the promise of a multiracial democracy, rein in executive power, champion worker’s rights, protect voting rights, and restore and strengthen the Federal protections against racial discrimination in the Voting Rights Act,” the resolution reads.

The measure is led by Democratic Rep. Greg Casar of Texas, who leads the Congressional Progressive Caucus; Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York, who leads the CBC, Rep. Grace Meng of New York, who leads the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus; and Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia. Rep. Iran rushed out approximately $6 billion of oil during a brief truce with the US in mid-June to mid-July, with around 20 Iranian tankers arriving off Malaysia's east coast, with China as the likely ultimate destination, according to analysts, per the Wall Street Journal.

Regional Impact & Kuwait Strikes Crisis

Kuwait suffered some of its worst Iranian retaliatory attacks, with strikes on a vital oil facility causing significant damage and injuries, and a second power plant hit in as many days.

Kuwait airport suspended flights and Kuwait Airways rescheduled the majority of its flights following the attacks.

Iraq is using a large fleet of trucks to carry fuel through Syria to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, rapidly making Syria the Middle East's top export hub, accounting for more than a quarter of regional volumes.

Oil Market Woes

Renewed fighting is raising the risk of an oil price spike as global supply buffers have been worn thin, with emergency stockpile releases and reduced Chinese imports having previously helped avert a crisis when the Strait of Hormuz first closed in March.

Germany To Join French Nuclear Exercise, Deepening 'Counter-Russia' Deterrence

In the latest development related to what some analysts have called the 'new Cold War' and nuclear saber-rattling between Russia and the West, Germany and France are planning a major nuclear exercise later this year.

The atomic drills were announced Friday, after a joint top-level meeting of the French and German governments near Cologne. "Alongside this work on a shared doctrine, German conventional forces will this year take part in a nuclear exercise of the French military," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz unveiled.

He detailed while at a press event alongside French President Emmanuel Macron that a "strategic steering group" established by the leading European allies would continue looking at deterrence in the future, with an eye on Russia.

"This is complementary to our nuclear participation and deterrence within NATO, which we still hold to," he added. He also previewed "a maneuver in the autumn held on the initiative of France" - while speaking of the Ukraine war.

"We will clarify together what form exactly this participation will take," he said.

France is newly positioning itself at the forefront of nuclear deterrence for Europe, a role that the United States has long assumed, and currently still does.

Mr Macron and Mr Merz began the defence council at Nörvenich air base beside a French Rafale and a German Eurofighter – a symbolic backdrop after the aircraft designed to replace them was scrapped.

Nuclear deterrence offers one field where the strained partnership can still move forward.

German troops would play a conventional supporting role and would not control French weapons. Berlin will also help develop radar and space-based systems for detecting ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

Currently the United States and the UK, which both maintain nuclear arsenals, form the core of NATO's nuclear deterrence strategy. While France also possesses nuclear weapons, it does not yet participate on a leadership level in NATO's nuclear planning group. As Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian walked alongside the coffin of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran last week,some of the black-clad mourners surrounding him chanted not in tribute to the late leader, but directly at him – “death to the compromiser.”

Not far from that site, Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s top diplomat who negotiated a ceasefire with the Trump administration and lifted some sanctions on the Islamic Republic, was forced to flee the funeral after a mob pelted him with rocks amid death chants accusing him of being a “traitorous sellout.”

The hostility directed at top officials during the funeral reflects a theory that has been gaining traction within the Islamic Republic’s most radical factions for months:that Iran’s wartime leaders who negotiated and signed the agreement with Washington are staging a soft coup against the Islamic Republic and its revolutionary ideals while the new supreme leader remains largely invisible for fear of his life – or, as some have suggested, because he is incapacitated.

The hardline factions that attended the funeral in large numbers believe that instead of avenging Khamenei’s killing,Iranian officials have surrendered by signing an agreement that defies the orders of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son and successor. But Khamenei has remained hidden from public view, neither addressing the nation directly nor visibly asserting his authority, even as officials negotiate or govern in his name.
