Ethan Curreri is a former New York City police office who arrested Laken Riley’s killer for a lesser crime six months before the illegal migrant was released — thanks to New York’s sanctuary policies — and moved to Georgia. Curreri was invited by President Trump to speak at the Angel Family event at the White House in February 2025, where the families of victims of criminal migrants gathered. Curreri is now a an officer with the Juno Beach Police Department in Florida.

I began my law enforcement career with the NYPD assigned to the 113th Precinct in South Jamaica, Queens.

I’ve walked into many difficult scenes as a police officer, but nothing compares to standing in a room full of broken hearts at the White House.

On Feb. 23, 2026, President Donald Trump hosted the Angel Family Remembrance Ceremony honoring those who lost their lives at the hands of illegal immigrants. The President gave me the opportunity to share the story that connects me to the families of those victims.

In August 2023, my partner and I observed a male recklessly driving a motorcycle with a 2-year-old child.

The child was not wearing a helmet, and there were no safety restraints in place. We conducted a routine stop, identified the individual operating the vehicle, placed him under arrest for endangering the welfare of a child, and processed him accordingly.

It was a standard law enforcement action, one that officers make every day. I didn’t expect to hear anything further about it — until I did.

In late February of 2024, I was watching the news about the brutal murder of a young Georgia nursing student. The suspect’s picture flashed on the screen, and I recognized him immediately.

It was Jose Ibarra, the man my partner and I had arrested and booked six months earlier. He was now identified as the man responsible for murdering Laken Riley while she was out for a morning run in a park near the University of Georgia.

My heart sank. I immediately replayed Ibarra’s arrest in my mind – what went wrong? Why wasn’t he in jail, or deported? Why was he in Georgia?

One thing I felt sure of is that I did my job, yet Laken’s life was taken because someone failed to do theirs.

Our justice system is a pattern of a failure. Individuals cycle through the system, face minimal consequences, and eventually reoffend. Many of these criminal encounters begin as routine, like the one I conducted, and they escalate and escalate until it’s too late.

It is the job of law enforcement to arrest criminals — but we need judges, district attorneys and politicians to send them to jail.

The conversation also cannot ignore immigration enforcement. The individual I arrested had entered the country unlawfully and, at multiple points, could have been returned to his home country. These missed opportunities matter. Federal agencies like ICE are tasked with an already difficult mission: identifying, detaining, and removing individuals who are in the country unlawfully and pose risks to public safety. This mission becomes significantly harder in so-called sanctuary cities — like NYC — where there is a lack of cooperation at the local level.

Policies that limit local cooperation with federal immigration authorities create real gaps in enforcement. Individuals who should be flagged, detained, or transferred can instead be released back into the community. This is not a failure of law enforcement, but a failure of coordination — and it’s what cost Laken Riley her life.

Standing in that room at the White House, surrounded by families carrying unimaginable loss, reinforced a simple truth: behind every failure in the system is a human cost. These are not abstract debates — they are real lives, real families, and real futures that are changed forever.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A clash over alleged daycare fraud in New York quickly turned personal on Saturday, August 15, after Rep Thomas Massie appeared to question whether Nick Shirley's reporting deserved to be taken seriously.

Shirley had been speaking out about alleged taxpayer-funded fraud involving daycares in New York City and questions surrounding donations to Gov Kathy Hochul.

Massie responded by turning the spotlight on Shirley instead, and the 24-year-old creator was not interested in backing down.

The exchange began after Shirley posted a video on X accusing New York officials of staying silent over allegations involving daycare operators who receive millions of dollars in taxpayer funding.

Shirley specifically pointed to claims involving social adult daycare centers in New York City and questioned whether political connections were playing a role.

His post also referenced allegations that Gov Kathy Hochul had received campaign donations from people connected to the daycare industry.

Massie did not focus on the specific New York allegations. Instead, the Kentucky Republican took aim at Shirley himself.

“Hard to take Nick Shirley seriously until he starts calling out Johnson, Thune, and Trump for funding the daycare fraud in every Omnibus and CR bill with no guardrails,” Massie wrote.

Shirley immediately pushed back.

I am being for real.

Today and for years, I didn’t name it, but I acknowledged it as soon as it tries to creep back in. If I don’t it tries to take me i to a deep depression. You start recognizing “it” whenit shows up.

Once you acknowledge this, you simply tell it to leave. Tell it it is not welcome and I remind it I am a child of The Most High God and tell it IN JESUS name and authority I demand YOU leave.

One of you reading this will appreciate this wisdom.

It is sp powerful to tell depressive feelings, aches internal, spirits of death, to LEAVE. Once you stand on it, you realize that YOU have the power and the weapon to force it out. It will try to return, keep your ground. It will leave and search some other vessel to inhabit, but it will come knocking in your door again. Less and less, but always be on guard.

This is one of the most important things I have ever realized.

Life changing.

Anyone who has ever had that creepy ache inside knows what I am talking about, maybe today is the day you realize you have weapons, authority, it has no power over you. It lies to you.

Tell it to leave, tell it you see it, leave.

Add in Jesus name, even if you have to say I BELONG TO JESUS over and over, just watch, that creepy feeling will go. Open your eyes, stand up, don’t just sit or lay there. Think of it like an unwanted guest in your home. Make it leave and let it know with your thoughts and words you are fully aware it is an intruder and make it leave.

Do not dismiss this guy, he is really telling you, same as I have, this shit is true.

Think as you listen.

The Veterans Choice Program began under Obama in 2014 after the VA wait-time scandal. The important access standards became roughly:

Type of care Community-care threshold

Primary care / mental health 20-day wait or 30-minute drive

Specialty care 28-day wait or 60-minute drive

So if someone remembers Trump saying something along the lines of “instead of waiting forever at the VA, go see a private doctor and we'll pay for it,” that's basically the policy he was describing.

Did Biden get rid of it?

No.

The MISSION Act remained federal law throughout the Biden administration, and the Community Care system continued operating. Veterans continued receiving large amounts of non-VA medical care through it.

There were political fights over how broadly VA should refer veterans to private providers, and critics argued during the Biden years that VA administrators sometimes made community care harder to obtain than Congress intended. But that's different from Biden repealing Trump's program.

In fact, the VA's current rules still explicitly use the MISSION Act eligibility framework.

And there's been another change under Trump now

This part is interesting because the story continued after his return to office.

In May 2025, Trump's VA announced that it was eliminating an additional internal review that had sometimes been required before community-care referrals were approved. The VA said that when a veteran and the referring clinician determine community care is in the veteran's best medical interest, it no longer requires approval by a second VA doctor.

So as of 2026, community care is very much alive.

But here's the big catch: “ANY hospital”

For ordinary/non-emergency treatment, a veteran generally cannot simply walk into any private hospital, show a VA card, and have VA pay the bill.

Usually the veteran needs VA authorization/referral and uses a provider in the VA Community Care Network. The VA's current 2026 benefits guide says routine community care generally requires a written VA referral.

Emergencies are different. If a veteran reasonably believes their life or health is in danger, the VA says:

“call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.”

No advance VA authorization is required. There are still eligibility/payment rules afterward, and VA generally needs to be notified within 72 hours."
