More than 10% of student debt is at least 90 days overdue. Low unemployment drives bankruptcies down 16% in quarter.

Americans increased their borrowing for the 21st straight quarter as more households took out loans to buy homes or refinance existing mortgages, according to a report released today from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Total U.S. household debt rose $92 billion, or 0.7%, to $13.95 trillion in the third quarter, the New York Fed’s quarterly household credit and debt report showed.

That’s $1.3 trillion above the previous peak in 2008.

Mortgage borrowing rose by $31 billion to $9.44 trillion. Mortgage rates have fallen since the end of 2018.

Student debt, held by roughly 45 million borrowers, increased to $1.5 trillion. Newly issued auto loans totaled $159 billion, while the median credit score for this debt increased to 711, an 8-point jump from the second quarter.

Still, aggregate delinquency rates worsened last quarter – 4.8% of outstanding debt was overdue, a 0.4 percentage point increase from the second quarter.

Among student debt, one in nine borrowers were 90+ days delinquent or in default in 2019, and this figure may be understated about half of student loans are currently in deferment, in grace periods or in forbearance and therefore temporarily not in the repayment cycle. Once these loans enter the repayment cycle, delinquency rates are projected to be roughly twice as high, according to the Fed report.

Three suspects who pledged allegiance to Islamic State have been detained during a massive counter-terrorism raid near Frankfurt, which authorities say foiled a major terrorist attack involving explosives and firearms.

Over 170 officers, including members of an elite police anti-terrorism team called SEK, burst into three flats in the town of Offenbach-am-Main on Tuesday evening. The main suspect was a 24-year-old German of Macedonian origin, while his accomplices – two Turks aged 22 and 21 – were arrested during separate raids in the same town.

The major suspect came disturbingly close to readying an attack, a Frankfurt state prosecutor told the media. He had already procured parts to manufacture homemade explosives and had tried to buy weapons on the darknet, part of the internet often used for illegal business.

The men, who grew up together in Offenbach, appear to have planned an attack in the Rhine-Main region. They had aimed to kill “as many people, so-called infidels, as possible,” Nadja Niesen, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office, said.

Although it is yet unknown whether they had chosen a specific target, the police intervention “took place in time to prevent a concrete threat.”

The catalog seems to be working most of the time. It's up to date.

The breads don't update regularly, it takes hours for them to update which is causing problems.

The index will update your post almost instantly if you post in the bread, then refresh the index. But if you expand the thread in the index, it will show ONLY the posts that are currently shown in the bread and the few posts that are shown in the index preview.

So the only way to post is to open a bread, post in it, and when it says "posted" you refresh the index and then you can see it. Then if you want to reply to a post, just type in the post number with >>, post it, then refresh the index again.
