Erik Prince's 'Secret' Meeting With Venezuelan Government "Flagged" By US Treasury

 

Earlier this month we detailed the bizarre story of controversial Blackwater founder Erik Prince's trip to meet with top Maduro government officials in Venezuela in late November. Prince had held "secret talks" with no less than Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, which reportedly included the Frontier Services Group executive pressing Caracas for the release of six imprisoned Citgo executives, something that apparently happened, according to a Bloomberg report. Other details of what was discussed or possibly agreed to remain a mystery. At the time speculation abounded as to whether or not his trip had the approval or knowledge of the Trump administration, given that as we pointed out at the time VP Delcy Rodríguez is a sanctioned individual, meaning discussion of any business arrangement with her or other officials without authorization is against US law. Now it appears Prince could be in hot water over the meetings: Erik Prince, a major Republican donor and founder of controversial security firm Blackwater, has been referred to the U.S. Treasury Department for possible sanctions violations tied to his recent trip to Venezuela for a meeting with a top aide of President Nicolas Maduro, two senior U.S. officials said. There’s no indication that Prince, whose sister is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, will be sanctioned for the meeting last month in Caracas with Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

 

Weeks ago the State Department denied that Prince was acting in an unofficial "back channel" capacity. When the reports first surfaced, the State Department even claimed it had no knowledge of the visit, with special envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams saying in a statement, “Neither the meeting nor any offers made were on behalf of the United States Government and on their face such offers would appear to violate U.S. sanctions.” The entire strange episode was widely interpreted as meaning the White House had grown tired of regime change efforts inside Venezuela and that support for US-declared 'interim president' Juan Guaidó was wavering. Of course, it could also signal that an internal US government conflict over Venezuela policy is breaking out into the open, as the AP report hints: But the fact the visit was flagged underscores the concern of officials in the Trump administration over what appeared to be an unauthorized diplomatic outreach to Maduro. This, as support for opposition leader Juan Guaidó inside Venezuela — if not Washington — appears to be waning.

 

A business associate of Prince's who is said to have traveled to Caracas for the meetings claims the National Security Council and Treasury Department were properly notified and that no objections were raised. The associate also said that no sanctions-violating activity took place, as no business dealings were involved, and nothing of value was received from Venezuelan government officials. Instead, "The person said Prince, a former Navy SEAL, continues to support the Trump administration’s goal of removing Maduro but believes State Department efforts to reach that goal have failed and new alternatives — which the person did not specify — need to be tried," according to the AP. Though "flagged" for the trip, it's highly unlikely that any legal repercussions will follow whatsoever, given not only Prince's deep insider connections with the Trump administration, but also that the whole 'mission' was probably authorized by somebody at the top, even if initially "off the books".

Deutsche Bank admits QE4 Has Started, And That Stocks Are Rising Because Of The Fed's Soaring Balance Sheet

 

There was a period of about two months when some of the more confused, Fed sycophantic elements, would parrot everything Powell would say regarding the recently launched $60 billion in monthly purchases of T-Bills, and which according to this rather vocal, if always wrong, subsegment of financial experts, did not constitute QE. Perhaps one can't really blame them: after all, unable to think for themselves, they merely repeated what Powell said, namely that "growth of our balance sheet for reserve management purposes should in no way be confused with the large-scale asset purchase programs that we deployed after the financial crisis. Neither the recent technical issues nor the purchases of Treasury bills we are contemplating to resolve them should materially affect the stance of monetary policy. In no sense, is this QE."

 

As it turned out, it was QE from the perspective of the market, which saw the Fed boosting its balance sheet by $60BN per month, and together with another $20BN or so in TSY and MBS maturity reinvestments, as well as tens of billions in overnight and term repos, and soared roughly around the time the Fed announced "not QE."

 

And so, as the Fed's balance sheet exploded by over $400 billion in under four months, a rate of balance sheet expansion that surpassed QE1, QE2 and QE3…… stocks blasted off higher roughly at the same time as the Fed's QE returned, and are now up every single week since the start of the Fed's QE4 announcement when the Fed's balance sheet rose, and are down just one week since then: the week when the Fed's balance sheet shrank.

 

The result of this unprecedented correlation between the market's response to the Fed's actions - and the Fed's growing balance sheet - has meant that it gradually became impossible to deny that what the Fed is doing is no longer QE. It started with Bank of America in mid-November (as described in "One Bank Finally Admits The Fed's "NOT QE" Is Indeed QE… And Could Lead To Financial Collapse"), and then after several other banks also joined in, and even Fed fanboy David Zervos admitted on CNBC that the Fed is indeed doing QE, the tipping point finally arrived, and it was no longer blasphemy (or tinfoil hat conspiracy theory) to call out the naked emperor, and overnight none other than Deutsche Bank joined the "truther" chorus, when in a report by the bank's chief economist Torsten Slok, he writes what we pointed out several weeks back, namely that "since QE4 started in October, a 1% increase in the Fed balance sheet has been associated with a 1% increase in the S&P500, see chart below." Not that DB has absolutely no qualms about calling what the Fed is doing QE4 for the simple reason that… it is QE4.

 

The chart in question, Cap #3 shows the weekly change in the Fed's balance sheet and the S&P500 as a scatterplot, and concludes that all it takes to push the S&P higher by 1% is to grow the Fed's balance sheet by 1%.

And just to underscore this point, the strategist points out that such a finding is "consistent with this new working paper, which finds that QE boosts stock markets even when controlling for improving macro fundamentals." Which, of course, is hardly rocket science - after all when you inject hundreds of billions into the market in months, and this money can't enter the economy, it will enter the market. The result: the S&P trading at an all time high in a year in which corporate profits actually decreased and the entire rise in the stock market was due to multiple expansion.

 

In short: the Kool Aid is flowing, the party is in full force and everyone has to dance, because the Fed will continue to perform QE4 at least until Q2 2020. Which reminds us of what we wrote last week, namely that another big bank, Morgan Stanley, has already seen through the current meltup phase, and predicts the "Melt-Up Lasting Until April, After Which Markets Will "Confront World With No Fed Support"."

The new technology is intended for use with shoulder-fired missiles called Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems (MANPADS), Dutch researcher Jos Wetzels told a cybersecurity conference here in Leipzig, Germany on Saturday. Wetzels said the system was laid out in a batch of CIA documents published by WikiLeaks in 2017 but that the files were mislabeled and attracted little public attention until now.

 

Wetzels said the CIA had come up with a “smart arms control solution” that would restrict the use of missiles “to a particular time and a particular place.” The technique, referred to as “geofencing,” blocks the use of a device outside a specific geographic area.

 

Weapons that are disabled when they leave the battlefield could be an attractive feature. Supplied to U.S. allies, the highly portable missiles can help win wars, but they have often been lost, sold, or passed to extremists.

 

For example, Stinger MANPADS supplied by the United States are credited with helping mujahedeen rebels drive Soviet forces out of Afghanistan in a conflict that spanned the 1980s and 1990s. But U.S. officials have since spent billions of dollars here to clear the missiles from the country - and from other conflict zones around the world.

 

Wetzels said it was unclear whether the CIA’s design ever left the drawing board or where it was meant to have been deployed, but he noted that the apparent period of development in the documents’ metadata - 2014 to 2015 - roughly coincided with media reports about the deployment of MANPADS to rebels in Syria. Geofencing might have been seen as a way of ensuring the missiles were used on the Syrian battlefield and nowhere else, he said.

 

The CIA declined to comment.

 

Outside experts who reviewed Wetzels’ analysis said they found it plausible.

 

N.R. Jenzen-Jones, who directs the British-based ARES intelligence consultancy, said geofencing has long been discussed as a safeguard to allow powerful weapons “into the hands of friendly forces operating in high-risk environments.”

 

Wetzels said geofencing was no panacea, running through a list of security vulnerabilities that could be used by insurgents to bypass the restrictions.

 

“It’s not a watertight solution,” he said.

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to visit Ukraine on Friday amid the drama on Capitol Hill over President Donald Trump's impeachment.

 

Pompeo will be the highest-ranking official to visit Ukraine's capital, Kiev, since the July phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that led to Trump's impeachment by the Democratic-led House this month on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

 

The visit, which will include a meeting with Zelensky, is intended "to underscore the strong, unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression," a senior State Department official told reporters during a preview of the trip. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the U.S. is committed to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, including a refusal to recognize Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea.

 

"Crimea is part of Ukraine, and the United States will never recognize Russia's attempt to annex it," the official said.

 

Pompeo also plans to meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko and Defense Minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk, as well as religious, civil society and business community leaders to discuss the government's reform agenda, among other topics, according to a statement issued by spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus.

 

The timing of Pompeo's visit to Kiev is awkward. He arrives a day after the departure of William Taylor, the acting U.S. ambassador whom Pompeo hand-picked to replace Marie Yovanovitch when she was recalled abruptly under pressure from Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney. Taylor's appointment had a time limit, but he did not have to leave until Jan. 14.

 

The State Department official declined to directly answer two questions from reporters about why Taylor was returning home the day before Pompeo's arrival. Instead, the official reiterated that Pompeo aims to show continued U.S. support for Ukraine's independence and a series of Zelensky's reforms, primarily strengthening the rule of law and combating corruption to foster more international investment.

 

Ukraine has emerged as the epicenter of the House inquiry that led to Trump's impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has so far declined to transmit the articles of impeachment as Democrats try to seek assurances about the scope of an expected trial of Trump in the Republican-led Senate.

 

At the heart of the Democrats' case is the allegation that Trump tried to leverage a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Zelensky to launch an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kiev conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

 

The official speaking Monday declined to answer questions about whether Pompeo would talk with Ukrainian officials about pursuing a Biden investigation, which Giuliani was pushing as a precondition for U.S. security assistance.

 

Giuliani has continued to press Ukrainian officials for information that could benefit Trump politically. Giuliani's latest trip to the country was earlier this month.

 

Though the United States has been focused on foreign policy involving Ukraine, Moscow is likely to be more attentive to Pompeo's trip to Minsk, in Belarus.

 

The United States has not had an ambassador in Belarus since 2008, when most U.S. diplomats were expelled after Washington announced sanctions on the country over human rights abuses. Now, the United States is preparing to restore diplomatic ties with Belarus, sometimes referred to as "the last dictatorship in Europe," as Russian President Vladimir Putin tries to "integrate" it closer to the Russian Federation.

 

Following his visit to Ukraine and Belarus, Pompeo plans to stop in other countries in the region.

 

"Excited to travel to Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Cyprus in the new year to meet with counterparts and affirm U.S. priorities across Europe and South Central Asia," Pompeo said in a tweet Monday.

How Not to Argue with Bill Barr

I’m open to criticisms of Attorney General Bill Barr, and have highlighted one or two in this space. But Katherine Stewart and Caroline Fredrickson have written an attack on him for the New York Times that seems to me a model of how not to engage in political debate. The op-ed is not persuasive, and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be.

The authors begin:

 

Why would a seemingly respectable, semiretired lion of the Washington establishment undermine the institutions he is sworn to uphold, incinerate his own reputation, and appear to willfully misrepresent the reports of special prosecutors and inspectors general, all to defend one of the most lawless and corrupt presidents in American history?

 

Let’s assume that this is a reasonable question: that Barr really has undermined the institutions he is sworn to uphold, etc. On that assumption, wouldn’t the most plausible explanation be that Barr has done these things without believing that he has done them? That, for example, he has undermined the rule of law while believing himself to be its servant. Yet at no point do S&F ever stop to consider this possibility. They give no sign of seeing that Barr might sincerely deny that Trump is one of the most lawless and corrupt presidents in American history, or that any intelligent person could sincerely deny it. Their assertions are taken as givens.

 

Their own answer to their question rests heavily on a concept of “religious nationalism” that they do not do much to explain.

 

Mr. Barr has embraced wholesale the “religious liberty” rhetoric of today’s Christian nationalist movement. When religious nationalists invoke “religious freedom,” it is typically code for religious privilege.

 

Generally when people are using a “code,” they know that the surface meaning of what they are saying is not the real meaning. S&F offer no evidence that Barr secretly shares their own view of what religious liberty is and isn’t and is merely cynically using the phrase to conceal his drive for privilege. Nor, of course, do they mount any kind of argument that the views Barr professes to believe about religious liberty are actually wrong. Their assertions will have to suffice.

 

S&F also claim that “Mr. Barr’s constitutional interpretation is simply window dressing on his commitment to religious authoritarianism.” You can guess how much evidence and argumentative support is brought forward to justify this charge–but again, the language of “commitment” is ambiguous, as it is compatible with Barr’s believing the propositions that the authors describe and condemn as “religious nationalism.”

 

If an intelligent person of good will could believe any of those propositions, as Stewart and Fredrickson do not consider, they have been given no reason to lessen their belief in them. Those who come predisposed to hate and fear Bill Barr will, on the other hand, come away confirmed, at least if they are not too reflective.

The New York Times, long referred to as the “newspaper of record,” has failed multiple times in 2019 in the way it covered President Donald Trump, the 2020 presidential race, and other issue areas in its headlines and tweets. Media critics, experienced journalists, and other experts called out some of the Times’ headlines and tweets for pushing misinformation, framing the story in line with right-wing talking points, or using euphemisms in place of accurate descriptions.

 

The New York Times helped Trump spread misinformation about the Russia probe

 

On March 24, the Times posted a tweet repeating Trump’s lies verbatim that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election “was an illegal takedown that failed” and Mueller’s report was “a complete and total exoneration.” A Times article headline from the same day also misleadingly claimed that Mueller’s investigation found no Trump-Russia conspiracy.

 

In April, the Times helped spread right-wing falsehoods by credulously repeating a claim by Attorney General Bill Barr during a congressional hearing, which he later walked back, that “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign. On July 25, the Times published a piece on the special counsel’s congressional testimony titled “Lack of Electricity in Mueller Testimony Short-Circuits Impeachment.” The headline was criticized by The American Independent’s Oliver Willis for treating the hearing like it was entertainment.

 

The Times pushed GOP lies on abortion and deceptively made Trump’s rhetoric appear moderate

 

A February 5 tweet reporting on Trump’s comments on abortion during his State of the Union address quoted a benign-sounding line from him: “Let us work to build a culture that cherishes innocent life.” The tweet failed to address Trump’s smears and lies about Democratic politicians and their support for abortion rights legislation, such as his deranged claim that a Democratic bill in Virginia would allow medical providers to “execute a baby after birth.”

 

In mid-May, the Times wrote a tweet highlighting Republicans’ “grisly claims that Democrats promote ‘birth day abortions’ and are ‘the party of death.’” Media critic Jamison Foser told the Times that it was spreading Republicans’ lies. The Times later deleted the tweet, saying the tweet did not clarify that “some of the Republicans’ claims” were “false or misleading,” an error Foser said the Times should not have made in the first place.

In accordance with a redesignation memorandum for record signed by Barrett, Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw, former Commander, Fourteenth Air Force, was redesignated as Commander, Space Operations Command; in addition to Shaw’s role as U.S. Space Command’s Combined Force Space Component Commander.

 

The SPOC provides space capabilities such as Space Domain Awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, military Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, navigation warfare, command and control, and Positioning, Navigation and Timing, on behalf of the USSF for USSPACECOM and other Combatant Commands.

 

“It is an honor and privilege to lead the U.S. Space Force’s Space Operations Command. Census: California to Lose Congressional Seat for First Time in History

 

New figures from the U.S. Census ahead of the 2020 decennial count suggest that California could lose a seat in Congress for the first time in its history.

 

While other “Sun Belt” states stand to gain congressional representation, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing U.S. Census Bureau figures on state population changes through July 1, California — once a symbol of the nation’s westward growth — will likely lose a congressional seat.

 

The Journal reported that California will join the cold states of the Northeast and Midwest in losing political clout:

I have some advice for attempting to red-pill your peeps about "Q". Since it is not easily digestible for the normies who have not been here from the get… I did this… and well, my peeps are looking at the MSM and politics way differently… and they ask me about more and more red-pilling items from time to time, so I know it has worked.

 

Approach the "Q" topic as a, who gives a fuck if "Q" is a LARP, fact or fiction is not the point. Just let your peeps know that yeah, I found out about this movement and I have my doubts about it actually being real….but some of the things the "Q" has posited… you know "Q" posts that were often in a question form, made you look into a lot of things… and that the more you dug and discovered… you found research that had been done on certain topics… and that research actually checked out… and that you really did discover that the media was pushing a certain narrative and lying to a lot of people, especially if you never researched those things the media pushed.

 

Deflect the Satanism/pedo slant the media portrays the "Q" movement as and ask them to do a little research on a few good topics.

 

Perhaps, Loop Capital…. a company that had only claimed 33 million to the IRS some years yet had been involved in 100's of billions of $ in deals… w/Michelle O's brother on director board… how the F does that add up($$ laundering)….
