Putin Should Take Control of the Iranian Situation Out of Israel’s Hands

At this time, it is up to Israel whether or not war occurs between the US and Iran. Israel very much wants this war as a means of putting Iran and Syria into chaos, thus leaving Hezbollah isolated and unsupplied. Then Israel can succeed in occupying southern Lebanon.

The American neoconservatives want Iran in chaos, because then the chaos can be exported into the Muslim regions of the Russian Federation with the purpose of causing sufficient internal turmoil to remove Russia as a constraint on US unilateralism.

Israel and the Neocons have Trump where they want him. Trump’s outrageous and reckless murder of Qasem Soleimani has provoked serious Iranian threats against the US to which Trump has replied with threats. Although there is some indication that Trump has realized his mistake and is trying to calm the situation, a calmed situation is not what Israel and the neoconservatives want.

Polls of the American public indicate that anti-Iranian propaganda has succeeced. All Israel or the neoconservatives, who are well placed, need to do is to conduct a false flag attack on some American entity, military base, personnel or ship, and blame it on Iran. The American press will demand Iranian blood and so will most of Trump’s constituency. As Trump has already committed himself to a response, he will have to deliver.

All wars have unknown and unintended consequences. As a result of Putin’s caution, Iran lacks sufficient air defense to prevent saturation bombing of the country. Washington would send in jihadists rather than its own soldiers, and the jihadist assignment would be to carry turmoil into Russia.

If it looked like Iran was prevailing in the conflict with the US, Trump would save the day for himself by nuking Iran. Indeed, some of the American rightwing are already calling for nuking Iran.

Rather than speculate on the consequences, I ask, “why risk them?”

A defensive alliance between Russia, Iran, and China, and any others inclined to join, would tie Israel’s hands and prevent the outbreak of war. Neither Trump nor Natanyahu are going to go to war with Russia, China, and Iran.

The reason US and Israeli aggression continue unabated is that no defense alliance has formed against them.

As an attack on Iran is an attack on Russia, forming a defensive alliance is a way to prevent the attack, perhaps the only way. An alliance would simply be a formalization of the implied, de facto alliance that already exists. It would actually reduce the threat against Iran and Russia and is the surest way of stabilizing the dangerous situation.

The country’s November trade deficit fell to its lowest point in over three years, suggesting the Trump administration’s agenda to recalibrate international flows of goods and services is having an impact.

The trade deficit fell 8.2 percent to $43.1 billion, the lowest since October 2016, the Commerce Department said Tuesday (pdf).

“As of this morning’s figures, the total U.S. trade deficit is heading for its first year-over-year decline since 2013, when U.S. growth was a good deal lower than what’s likely for this year,” trade expert Alan Tonelson told The Epoch Times.

The goods trade deficit with China, the focus of the White House’s “America First” agenda, tumbled 15.7 percent to $26.4 billion, with imports dropping 9.2 percent and exports jumping 13.7 percent.

Tonelson argued that today’s trade figures, which pertain to November flows of goods and services, “show that Trump’s China hard line is working.” He urged the administration to maintain its pressure in the trade dispute and take further steps to decouple the two countries’ economies.

How Was Pentagon 'Withdrawal Letter" Leaked To Iraq? Anatomy Of A Propaganda Coup

The inside account of how the now infamous "phony" letter announcing complete US troop withdrawal from Iraq after seventeen years details astoundingly how the "posting of the letter online unleashed a mad, behind-the-scenes scramble at the Pentagon, the White House, and on Capitol Hill, as elected officials, policymakers, military advisers and journalists sought to understand whether the letter intended to communicate what its plain language suggested."

As different departments and levels within the Pentagon bureaucracy attempted to account for it, the story changed multiple times. In a matter of a couple hours it went from "authentic" to "phony" to part of an effort to sow "active disinformation" — and finally according to a confused press briefing by Gen. Milley and Defense Secretary Mark Esper an "unauthorized draft" and "an honest mistake".

This after The Washington Post and a host of other major outlets "confirmed" it as "authentic" — in the words of WaPo's Beirut Bureau chief Liz Sly.

At Monday's Pentagon briefing itself which attempted to assess the origins of the mysterious draft letter, The Dispatch summarized the atmosphere: "Was the United States really moving to remove its remaining troops from Iraq? Nobody seemed to know."

And ultimately no definitive answers came, other than the Pentagon and administration denying than an Iraq pullout is happening, as to just how a "draft letter" which had been making the rounds at CENTCOM came to be in the hands of the Iraqis, after which it was posted online.

As The Dispatch notes, the letter wasn't merely announced by some Iraqi politician in Baghdad, but was released via America's enemies:

The news was a propaganda coup for the Iranians and those in Iraq who support them. The story broke on the television channel of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia, Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH), after it was leaked by the Iraqi prime minister’s office, according to Liz Sly, Beirut bureau chief for the Washington Post, who noted that the leader of AAH is a U.S.-designated terrorist and his militia is responsible for the deaths of dozens of Americans.

The letter soon made its way into the American media.

Initially, there was this statement out of the Pentagon policy office in conjunction with Operation Inherent Resolve: “OIR has confirmed with us at the working level that this is active disinformation.” The Pentagon was “fairly certain that this is a fake” according to that early media statement.

The Obama administration actually granted clemency to seven Iranian-born men convicted or awaiting trial in the United States, including some that Justice Department officials said posed threats to national security, and dropped U.S. charges and international arrest warrants against 14 others. All fugitives, the 14 included some of the most wanted Iranian agents suspected of procuring parts and technolog for Tehran’s nuclear, ballistics missile and weapons programs.

Here are some of the key players let go in the prisoner swap

The Military Logistics Network

Hamid Arabnejad (above), Gholamreza Mahmoudi and Ali Moattar, Iranian citizens and Mahan Air executives, were indicted in 2014 in connection with a conspiracy to illegally obtain six Boeing airplanes for the private Iranian airline. U.S. authorities also sanctioned Mahan Air and the men for a variety of alleged crimes, including using the airline to provide financial and logistical support to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and its paramilitary Quds Force, which the U.S. designated as a supporter of terrorism in 2007. Arabnejad was individually designated for allegedly overseeing Mahan Air’s sanctions evasion efforts and provision of support and services to Quds Force.

The Military and Weapons Pipeline

Arash Ghahreman (above), a naturalized U.S. citizen from Staten Island, N.Y., was convicted in April 2015 and is serving 78 months for his role in a scheme to illegally procure marine navigation and military electronic equipment for Iran. Also charged in the San Diego case was Iranian national Koorush Taherkhani and his Dubai firm, described as a front established to obtain American goods and technologies for Iran. Ghahreman promised undercover agents posing as suppliers that his network needed “trusted and reliable” partners, prosecutors said. A top Justice Department official said the network had “the potential to harm U.S. national security objectives.”

The Improvised Explosives Network

Amin Ravan, known by U.S. officials as a longtime globe-trotting procurement agent for Tehran, was charged in Washington, D.C., in 2011 along with his Tehran firm and others with smuggling U.S.-made military antennae to Hong Kong and Singapore for use in Iran. Authorities also say he is an unindicted co-conspirator in a sprawling procurement network that sent to Tehran thousands of U.S.-made radio frequency modules, some of which ended up in a particularly deadly form of IED responsible for killing American troops in Iraq. Ravan was arrested in Malaysia in 2012, but released before U.S. authorities could have him extradited.

The Missile Parts Pipeline

Bahram Mechanic (above) was charged in Houston in April 2015, along with alleged U.S.-based associates Khosrow Afghahi and Tooraj Faridi and Matin Sadeghi of Turkey, with supplying Iran with U.S.-origin microelectronics and other commodities “frequently used in a wide range of military systems, including surface-air and cruise missiles.” The men, and four U.S. and Iranian companies, allegedly sent $24 million worth of commodities to Iran between 2010 and 2015 alone, in a conspiracy one Justice Department official described as “a clear threat to U.S. national security.” Mechanic has led a broader Houston-based Iranian procurement network since at least 1985, authorities say.

The Nuclear Network

Seyed Abolfazl Shahab Jamili, a Tehran-based import-export businessman, was charged under seal in Boston in 2013 with conspiring with Chinese associate Sihai Cheng (above) and two Iranian companies to procure thousands of parts with nuclear applications for Iran in a conspiracy dating back to 2005. Beginning in February 2009, the two allegedly conspired with others to illegally obtain hundreds of specially manufactured pressure transducers — believed critical to running Tehran’s clandestine nuclear program — from an Andover, Massachusetts, company that was not suspected of wrongdoing. Although Jamili was the suspected mastermind, Cheng pleaded guilty a month before the swap and is serving a nine-year prison sentence.

The Obama administration’s decision to grant clemency to seven men in the U.S. and drop criminal charges and arrest warrants against 14 others overseas undermined strategic enforcement efforts against a broad array of Iranian procurement networks operating in the U.S. that have provided Tehran with a steady stream of critically important parts and technologies for its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and to maintain and expand its military and weapons systems.

Ron Burkle, who has long been obsessed with gaining control over the hidden levers of power and celebrity, is like a boy who can’t resist playing with fire. News that the liberal, California billionaire has emerged as a likely buyer for the National Enquirer is the latest startling twist in the long history of that tabloid, which was founded as a muck-raking New York weekly in 1926.

To some, it might seem odd that a major Democratic Party donor and longtime friend of Bill Clinton would want to buy such a lowbrow, conservative outlet. After all, it is widely credited with assisting Donald Trump’s ascent to the presidency, with its “catch-and-kill” strategy of burying reports about his alleged affairs.

But to those who know Burkle, it’s just also another step in his risky, decades-long tango with the gossip press. It’s a dance that has left him bruised on more than one occasion.

BURKLE'S LONG, TANGLED RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TABLOIDS

Burkle has long enjoyed appearing in the New York gossip columns. Since the mid-2000s, when he divorced his wife, his name would often be cited as a guest at model-filled social events, or alongside celebrities such as Paris Hilton.

At the time, his public image was of a supremely eligible, billionaire bachelor. His personal Boeing 757, which included a private bedroom suite, and was often used to transport important pals like the former president, was known colloquially among gossip journalists as “Air F**k One.”

Burkle would often call reporters directly—myself included, during my years at the Daily News—to spin the item of the day. (It was unusual to hear from a billionaire personally, and he shared this habit with only one other peer: Donald J. Trump.)

Many gossip columnists at Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post were known to take money from personalities they covered through various side-hustles. Harvey Weinstein gave some reporters book deals through the publishing arm of Miramax; other studio heads offered writers “script development deals,” and one top editor simply accepted bags of cash.

For Jared Paul Stern, who at the time was second banana at the Post’s influential Page Six column, the ancillary business was fashion design. He bought black polo shirts (which were all Burkle ever seemed to wear) cheaply over the internet from China, added a pirate logo, and voila: the label “Skull & Bones” was born. These he offered to Burkle for sale in bulk—perhaps as holiday gifts for his large staff, or so went one suggestion.

Burkle hated the Post for its conservative politics and, he felt, unflattering personal coverage. He tried complaining about it directly to Murdoch, his fellow billionaire, but been rebuffed.

So he took matters into his own hand, launching a sting operation, complete with hidden cameras, hoping to catch Stern accepting cash. But the reporter was too smart to take the proffered gym bag full of greenbacks, and the ensuing scandal coverage (my own rival tabloid was only too happy run it on the front page for weeks) was as messy as it was inconclusive.

Stern got run out of town, but avoided criminal charges. Burkle botched his kill-shot, and didn’t come out looking so great himself. Many observers were left with the impression that he really was the paunchy, devious, model-chasing older rich guy that the Post had always made him out to be.

When President Barack Obama announced the “one-time gesture” of releasing Iranian-born prisoners who “were not charged with terrorism or any violent offenses” last year, his administration presented the move as a modest trade-off for the greater good of the Iran nuclear agreement and Tehran’s pledge to free five Americans….

But Obama, the senior official and other administration representatives weren’t telling the whole story on Jan. 17, 2016, in their highly choreographed rollout of the prisoner swap and simultaneous implementation of the six-party nuclear deal, according to a POLITICO investigation.

Obama portrayed the seven men he freed as “civilians.” The senior official described them as businessmen convicted of or awaiting trial for mere “sanctions-related offenses, violations of the trade embargo.”

In reality, some of them were accused by Obama’s own Justice Department of posing threats to national security. Three allegedly were part of an illegal procurement network supplying Iran with U.S.-made microelectronics with applications in surface-to-air and cruise missiles like the kind Tehran test-fired recently, prompting a still-escalating exchange of threats with the Trump administration. Another was serving an eight-year sentence for conspiring to supply Iran with satellite technology and hardware. As part of the deal, U.S. officials even dropped their demand for $10 million that a jury said the aerospace engineer illegally received from Tehran.

And in a series of unpublicized court filings, the Justice Department dropped charges and international arrest warrants against 14 other men, all of them fugitives. The administration didn’t disclose their names or what they were accused of doing, noting only in an unattributed, 152-word statement about the swap that the U.S. “also removed any Interpol red notices and dismissed any charges against 14 Iranians for whom it was assessed that extradition requests were unlikely to be successful.”

Three of the fugitives allegedly sought to lease Boeing aircraft for an Iranian airline that authorities say had supported Hezbollah, the U.S.-designated terrorist organization. A fourth, Behrouz Dolatzadeh, was charged with conspiring to buy thousands of U.S.-made assault rifles and illegally import them into Iran.

A fifth, Amin Ravan, was charged with smuggling U.S. military antennas to Hong Kong and Singapore for use in Iran. U.S. authorities also believe he was part of a procurement network providing Iran with high-tech components for an especially deadly type of IED used by Shiite militias to kill hundreds of American troops in Iraq.

The biggest fish, though, was Seyed Abolfazl Shahab Jamili, who had been charged with being part of a conspiracy that from 2005 to 2012 procured thousands of parts with nuclear applications for Iran via China. That included hundreds of U.S.-made sensors for the uranium enrichment centrifuges in Iran whose progress had prompted the nuclear deal talks in the first place.

When federal prosecutors and agents learned the true extent of the releases, many were shocked and angry. Some had spent years, if not decades, working to penetrate the global proliferation networks that allowed Iranian arms traders both to obtain crucial materials for Tehran’s illicit nuclear and ballistic missile programs and, in some cases, to provide dangerous materials to other countries.

Chaos In Pentagon: Defense Secretary Denounces Statement On Troop Withdrawal From Iraq

On January 6th, an unsigned letter from Brig. Gen. William Seely III, the Marine Corps officer who commands the U.S. coalition against ISIS began circulating media, purportedly announcing that the US-led coalition in Iraq would withdraw.

In a very polite manner, the letter explains that Operation Inherent Resolve respects the Iraqi government’s decision and would start preparing to leave the country within the next few days.

Immediately after the letter began circulating media, the US Department of Defense organized a press briefing with US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in attendance.

The two officials said that they were not aware of it and that its contents didn’t reflect the Trump administration’s policy, saying that there were no plans for US forces to withdraw from Iraq.

The letter was legitimate but was never meant to be sent or made public, Gen. Milley said.

“This was a mistake, an honest mistake,” he told reporters. “We understand U.S. government policy. Nobody’s leaving.”

He said Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, US CENTCOM commander, called his subordinates in Iraq to find out what was going on there. He also concluded the letter was sent in error.

“He used other words that were a little more colorful than ‘mistake,’” Gen. Milley said. “… The bottom line is, it should never have happened.”

The Department of Defense’s Press Secretary Alyssa Farah rejected that there was any change of policy for the US.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, CIA Director Gina Haspel, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley and Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire will brief the House of Representatives on the situation in Iraq in a closed-door session on January 8th.

Despite that, the situation with the letter shows the state of chaos in the US-led coalition, which is further substantiated by the report that NATO was suspending all training of Iraqi forces to ensure the safety of its mission members.

“The safety of our personnel in Iraq is paramount,” acting NATO spokesman Dylan White said in a statement. “We continue to take all precautions necessary. NATO’s mission is continuing, but training activities are temporarily suspended.”

He said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had spoken by phone with U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and coordinated the actions.

CEOs of major U.S. military contractors stand to reap huge windfalls from the escalation of conflict with Iran. This was evident in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. assassination of a top Iranian military official last week. As soon as the news reached financial markets, these companies’ share prices spiked, inflating the value of their executives’ stock-based pay.

I took a look at how the CEOs at the top five Pentagon contractors were affected by this surge, using the most recent SEC information on their stock holdings.

Northrop Grumman executives saw the biggest increase in the value of their stocks after the U.S. airstrike that killed Qasem Suleimani on January 2. Shares in the B-2 bomber maker rose 5.43 percent by the end of trading the following day.

Wesley Bush, who turned Northrop Grumman’s reins over to Kathy Warden last year, held 251,947 shares of company stock in various trusts as of his final SEC Form 4 filing in May 2019. (Companies must submit these reports when top executives and directors buy and sell company stock.) Assuming Bush is still sitting on that stockpile, he saw the value grow by $4.9 million to a total of $94.5 million last Friday.

New Northrop Grumman CEO Warden saw the 92,894 shares she’d accumulated as the firm’s COO expand in value by more than $2.7 million in just one day of post-assassination trading.

Lockheed Martin, whose Hellfire missiles were reportedly used in the attack at the Baghdad airport, saw a 3.6 percent increase in price per share on January 3. Marillyn Hewson, CEO of the world’s largest weapon maker, may be kicking herself for selling off a considerable chunk of stock last year when it was trading at around $307. Nevertheless, by the time Lockheed shares reached $413 at the closing bell, her remaining stash had increased in value by about $646,000.

What about the manufacturer of the MQ-9 Reaper that carried the Hellfire missiles? That would be General Atomics. Despite raking in $2.8 billion in taxpayer-funded contracts in 2018, the drone maker is not required to disclose executive compensation information because it is a privately held corporation.

We do know General Atomics CEO Neal Blue is worth an estimated $4.1 billion—and he’s a major investor in oil production, a sector that also stands to profit from conflict with a major oil-producing country like Iran.

The State of New York has taken a $900 million write-down on more than $1 billion it invested in bringing Tesla’s solar unit to Buffalo, which has not produced the economic activity the state had hoped for.

The announcements were made by Musk as he delivered the first Model 3 vehicle out of the Shanghai factory to the public. Musk told the audience in Shanghai: “We intend to continue making a significant investment and increasing the investment in China, making the Model 3 and the Model Y and future models also in China.”

“Something that would be super cool … So we’re going to do it … is to try to create a China design and engineering center to actually design an original car in China for worldwide consumption. I think this will be very exciting,” he added.

Musk also took his time on stage to perform a dance for the crowd, which Bloomberg correspondent Selina Wang mused might be part of a “charm offensive” aimed at officials of China’s communist government:

Analysts believe that China is a critical market for Tesla as the company faces a number of challenges such as slowing vehicle sales and increasing competition from major auto manufacturers.
