Human Rights Watch (HRW), a U.S.-based nonprofit, in an annual report documenting human rights conditions around the world, said the Chinese regime was carrying out the โ€œmost pervasive and brutal oppression in decades.โ€ Meanwhile, outside its borders, Beijing was using its economic clout to silence its critics and extend its censorship to the rest of the world.

 

โ€œNo other government flexes its political muscles with such vigor and determination to undermine the international human rights standards and institutions that could hold it to account,โ€ Kenneth Roth, HRWโ€™s executive director, wrote in the report released on Tuesday.

 

Roth experienced this firsthand when he was denied entry to Hong Kong on Jan. 12, where he was due to hold a press conference about the report. The city has been roiled by ongoing pro-democracy protests against the Chinese regimeโ€™s increasing encroachment into the cityโ€™s freedoms and autonomy.

 

โ€œI had hoped to spotlight Beijingโ€™s deepening assault on international efforts to uphold human rights,โ€ Roth said in a statement on Sunday. โ€œThe refusal to let me enter Hong Kong vividly illustrates the problem.โ€

 

Hong Kongโ€™s leader Carrie Lam on Jan. 14 declined to comment on Rothโ€™s case. Earlier, however, Chinaโ€™s foreign ministry spokesperson indicated that the Chinese regime had been involved in the decision to bar entry.

 

โ€œIt is Chinaโ€™s sovereign right to decide who shall be granted entry and who shall be denied it,โ€ Geng Shuang said at a regular briefing on Jan. 13.

 

Geng also suggested the refusal was linked to the nonprofitโ€™s advocacy regarding the Hong Kong protests. He accused the group of โ€œinciting violenceโ€ and โ€œseparatist activitiesโ€ in the city.

 

Roth, at a Tuesday press conference at the United Nations in New York City, dismissed the explanation as โ€œpreposterous,โ€ saying the itโ€™s โ€œfrankly ludicrous [to suggest] that my colleagues and I have the capacity to mobilize a million people or more on the streets repeatedly over the last six months.โ€

 

The Chinese regime has consistently framed the demonstrations as the work of foreign forces inciting protesters from behind the scenes.

 

โ€œThe Chinese government is terrified of admitting this genuine desire for democracy on territory that they rule,โ€ Roth said. โ€œBecause if they admit that this is an indigenous, natural, and spontaneous desire, rather than what they claim is a foreign imposition โ€ฆ then whatโ€™s happening in Hong Kong might spread to the mainlandโ€”and thatโ€™s really the big fear.โ€

 

In December, Beijing announced sanctions on HRW and other U.S.-based nonprofits, in retaliation to the United States enacting the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which supports the cityโ€™s protest movement and threatens to impose sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials involved in rights abuses in the city.

 

In a section on Hong Kong, the HRW report said Hong Kong police used โ€œexcessive forceโ€ to disperse protesters, including by โ€œbeating those subdued on the ground.โ€ It added that police have โ€œincreasingly restricted freedom of assemblyโ€ in the city.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) โ€“ The United States will maintain tariffs on Chinese goods until the completion of a second phase of a U.S.-China trade agreement, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Tuesday, a day before the two sides are to sign an interim deal.

 

Mnuchin told reporters that President Donald Trump could consider easing tariffs if the world's two largest economies move quickly to seal a follow-up agreement.

 

"If the president gets a Phase 2 in place quickly, he'll consider releasing tariffs as part of Phase 2," Mnuchin said.

 

Trump is slated to sign the Phase 1 trade agreement with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White House on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. (1630 GMT). The signing occurs a week before the U.S. Senate is due to begin its impeachment trial of the U.S. president.

 

Trump became only the third U.S. president to be impeached when the House last month approved charges that he abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to announce an investigation into Democratic presidential rival Joe Biden and obstructed Congress.

 

New data showed that the costs of Trump's trade wars were proving more widespread, deeper and longer-lasting to American manufacturing competitiveness and jobs than previously believed. Google Says Itโ€™s Eliminating Cookies From Browsers

 

Google on Tuesday announced it would begin phasing third-party cookies out of its Chrome web browser, following in the steps of competitors Safari and Firefox.

 

However, unlike those two companies that banned cookies outright, Google will phase out their support for cookies โ€œwithin two years,โ€ Justin Schuh, director at engineering for Chrome, wrote in a blog post.

 

โ€œSome browsers have reacted to these concerns by blocking third-party cookies, but we believe this has unintended consequences that can negatively impact both users and the web ecosystem,โ€ he continued.

 

Google cited user concerns about cookies including privacy and data collection, pledging to replace them with new technical solutions.

Cookies allow companies to track patterns of specific users and are often used for targeted advertising.

 

In Tuesdayโ€™s blog post, Google argued that banning them immediately would encourage other bad behavior in its place, like fingerprinting, a cookie-less method used to identify web users.

 

During the two year period until it drops services for third party cookies altogether, Google will use some new methods to block cross-website tracking.

 

Chrome will require that cookies designated for third party use can only be accessed using secure connections starting in February

BioWare sent out a cryptic Mass Effect tweet earlier today, and it's got us wondering WTF is going on. Could it be a port for the Nintendo Switch? A remaster of the entire trilogy? Is it just more vague posturing that cruelly reminds us of the beloved trilogy without any promises for its future? Somebody answer me!

 

The tweet in question is simply a music note emoji coupled with the hashtag #MassRelays (I've already checked, and that hashtag has no related traffic other than people wondering about the hashtag or posts from 2012). Attached to the tweet is part of the opening cinematic for the original Mass Effect game, with the 'Mass Effect Theme' playing over it. The #MassRelay is in reference to the text from the opening, which provides the setting for the entire trilogy: humans discovered the mass relays which allowed them to travel further into space than ever before. "They called it the greatest discovery in human history. The civilizations of the galaxy call itโ€ฆ Mass Effect."

 

There's not much else to glean from this tweet, but it's important to note that it's unlike the other posts BioWare has been putting up lately. Most of its other tweets have been sharing fan art, celebrating holidays, and wishing us a happy Dragon Age or N7 Day. This is the first Tweet in quite some time that isn't sharing game content or celebrating a date, as January 14 has no significance in the Mass Effect universe.

 

So what does it all mean? Maybe nothing, maybe something. A Mass Effect port to Nintendo Switch could be a smart move, as we know the console doesn't have very many shooters and it can handle big games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Fans have been begging for a remastered trilogy since the lackluster and often wonky-eyed Mass Effect: Andromeda, and most responses to the tweet are requesting just that. Of course, this tweet could also just be another case of BioWare reminding us of the Mass Effect brand. Cruel, but not unprecedented.

 

We can't promise there's more Mass Effect in your future, but we do know that the Final Fantasy 7 remaster is delayed to April 2020.
