Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch called for an investigation Tuesday after new documents obtained by the House of Representatives suggest she may have been followed by associates of President Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani while in Ukraine.

 

“Needless to say, the notion that American citizens and others were monitoring Ambassador Yovanovitch’s movements for unknown purposes is disturbing,” Yovanovitch’s attorney said in a statement, according to The Hill. “We trust that the appropriate authorities will conduct an investigation to determine what happened."

 

The House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Reform committees released the documents turned over by indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas that included messages between him and Republican congressional candidate Robert Hyde.

 

In one text, Hyde, a Trump donor, allegedly wrote to Parnas, “Wow. Can’t believe Trump hasn’t fired this b–ch. I’ll get right in that,” according to The Hill.

 

In another message, he allegedly wrote, “they will let me know when she’s on the move,” in an apparent reference to Yovanovicth,” adding later, “if you want her out they need to make contact with security forces,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

 

"Guess you can do anything in the Ukraine with money," he reportedly texted, after apparently establishing that Yovanovitch was under some form of surveillance.

 

The House released the documents as new evidence for the upcoming Senate impeachment trial related to Trump’s July phone call asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s involvement in the country.

 

Parnas and his business partner Igor Fruman, both U.S. citizens who emigrated from the former Soviet bloc, have been indicted by federal prosecutors on charges of conspiracy, making false statements and falsification of records related to allegations that they made outsized campaign donations to Republican causes after receiving millions of dollars originating from Russia.

 

Parnas' attorney stated last year he would be willing to testify in the impeachment inquiry.

What is the symbol?

A symbol with five crosses like this is known as a Jerusalem Cross, and it was employed as the symbol of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the 13th Century. The kingdom was established by crusading European Christians who invaded and conquered Muslim lands.

 

There is not one agreed meaning to the five crosses - various theories suggest they could represent Christ and the four gospels, five wounds suffered by Christ on the cross, or the four points of the compass.

Why does Tom Steyer use it?

In an interview with BuzzFeed last year, before he announced he would run for president, Mr Steyer was asked about the significance of the cross on his hand.

 

"It means to tell the truth no matter what the cost is," he said. "For a while now, I have drawn it on my hand every day to remind myself to always tell the truth. I later discovered that it has traditionally been known as a Jerusalem cross."

He appears to have started drawing the symbol in the winter of 2017, and in May 2018, he told Politico it was a reminder to always tell the truth, even if you are put on the cross for it.

Putin proposes major amendments to Russia’s constitution incl. about his own post, says people should vote on changes

The constitution should take priority over international law if the latter violates the rights of Russian citizens or violates Russia’s constitutional principles, President Vladimir Putin has proposed.

Amendments to the constitution could be put to a popular vote to ensure “the development of Russia as a welfare and rule-of-law state,” the Russian leader said in his annual state of the nation address.

Adopting a brand new constitution is not necessary because the current one will remain relevant for many years to come, Putin explained. But he did suggest some changes he’d like to see.

Domestic v international law in Russia

One of the key issues Putin outlined was that Russia should abide by international law only if it does not conflict with the constitution. Adopted back in 1993, it should serve as a primary source “in our legal environment,” he stated.

International agreements and treaties, as well as decisions by international bodies may apply in Russia “only to the extent that they do not entail restrictions on the rights and freedoms of people and citizens, and do not contradict our constitution.”

Stricter requirements for top officials

The president then suggested stricter profiling of the top political brass, starting with presidential candidates and going all the way down.

An amended constitution would include compulsory requirements for “persons holding positions crucial for ensuring the country’s security and sovereignty,” including the prime minister, cabinet members, governors, heads of federal agencies, MPs, and judges.

They should be barred from having foreign citizenship or residence permits for other nations, Putin proposed.

Anyone willing to run for president will be subject to “even more stringent requirements.” Aside from the absence of foreign citizenship “not only during elections, but also at any time earlier,” a candidate must have lived in Russia for at least 25 years as opposed to the current 10 years.

Limits on presidential terms remain in place

Putin, who got re-elected in 2018, also took aim at the duration of the presidential tenure.

“I know there’s a debate in our society regarding a constitutional provision that the same person shall not hold the position of the president of Russian Federation for more than two consecutive terms,” he acknowledged. “I don’t think this is a fundamental issue, but I agree with that.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s Central Election Commission signaled a popular vote could be held as early as 2020. “If everything is solved quickly, this may happen this year,” the body’s secretary Maya Grishina said, according to Sputnik.
