Two months after the FBI used Christopher Steele’s dossier to support a warrant targeting the Trump campaign, U.S. intelligence officially declared his evidence was β€œhighly politically sensitive,” minimally corroborated and not worthy of including in its analysis of Russian election interference, a newly declassified document shows.

 

The so-called Annex A of the official Russian election interference Intelligence Community Assessment was declassified this week by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, providing the most definitive proof to date that the U.S. intelligence in December 2016 as President Obama was leaving office was wary of a dossier that was essential to the FBI probe into now-disproven Trump-Russia collusion.

 

β€œAn FBI source, using both identified and unidentified sub sources, volunteered highly politically sensitive information from the summer to the fall of 2016 on Russian influence efforts aimed at the US presidential election. We have only limited corroboration of the source reporting in this case and did not use it to reach the analytic conclusions of the CIA/FBI/NSA assessment," the appendix stated.

 

The intelligence community assessment also warned that Steele appeared to have leaked his information to the media just before Trump was elected Nov. 8, 2016.

 

β€œThe source’s reporting appears to have been acquired by multiple western press organizations starting in October,” the annex stated.

 

The annex confirms Republicans’ long-held suspicions that the intelligence community saw the Steele dossier as suspect even as the FBI portrayed its allegations as verified to a FISA court starting in October 2016.

Anons, as former military officer, please allow me to share some insight with you. The General corps of the military is a tightly controlled club. It is corrupt for the same reason that so many CEOs are corrupt. Very few officers get to make it to the General ranks. Those who aspire to make it to that level are far too often willing to sell out because the competition is fierce. Guess who decides who gets to join the club? The General's themselves. I saw this first hand. The General's vet amongst themselves who they want to join their ranks from the group of Colonel's who are in zone for General promotion. The President approves, and then the Senate confirms. So if past presidents have been corrupt, and the Senate has been corrupt, what do you think most, or at least many of the General officers are?

 

Of course, some good guys make it through. I think Gen Flynn and Adm Rogers are true patriots. However, a lot of General officers in the military are corrupt. Who do you think is pushing all the PC crap and other shit policies that have weakened our military over the past couple of decades? It comes from the Generals.

 

Don't be discouraged when people like Mattis and Milley turn out to be no good. I know Q and the patriots taking back our country are not surprised by this. it is accounted for in the plan. I see what is happening and I trust the plan...even though it has taken longer than most of us would have liked. Don't make the mistake of looking at all of the military as a group of saints. Mueller Witness Said Manafort Might Have Given Russian Oligarch’s Money To Pro-McCain Group

 

A key witness in the special counsel’s probe said Russian money might have flowed to a dark money group supporting Arizona Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Rick Gates told investigators in August 2018 that his former boss, Paul Manafort, contributed funds from a shell company to a dark money group that supported McCain.

Gates said he believed that a Russian oligarch funded the shell company that Manafort tapped for the donation.

McCain was known as a staunch Russia hawk during his Senate career.

 

Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain was known throughout his political career as a staunch Russia hawk, opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression in Eastern Europe and serving as one of the conduits to the FBI for the infamous dossier that alleged a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Kremlin in 2016.

 

But testimony from a key witness in the special counsel’s probe suggests that McCain might have received Russian help of his own during his 2008 presidential campaign.

 

Rick Gates, who served as deputy chairman of the Trump campaign, told the special counsel’s team in August 2018 that his former boss, Paul Manafort, might have contributed to a pro-McCain dark money group from a shell company he controlled that was funded by a Russian oligarch with close ties to Putin.

 

Gates told prosecutors he believed Manafort contributed to the group Americans for Patriotism through his Cyprus-based shell company, LOAV, Ltd. He also said that Oleg Deripaska, a Russian aluminum magnate, funded LOAV.

 

β€œGates stated he heard that a Paul Manafort controlled Cypriot account, LOAV, contributed money to the 501c(4), and the funds in the LOAV account were from Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch,” read the FBI notes of Gates’s Feb. 28, 2018, interview.

 

The FBI released the summary and other interview documents from the special counsel’s probe as part of a lawsuit filed by BuzzFeed and CNN.

 

The notes do not show if Gates said whether McCain was aware of the source of the funds, or whether Deripaska knew that Manafort provided it to the group supporting McCain’s failed presidential campaign. Gates also did not say how much money Manafort sent to Americans for Patriotism.

A world of tighter top-down government control and more

authoritarian leadership, with limited innovation and growing

citizen pushback

In 2012, the pandemic that the world had been

anticipating for years finally hit. Unlike 2009’s

H1N1, this new influenza strain β€” originating

from wild geese β€” was extremely virulent and

deadly. Even the most pandemic-prepared

nations were quickly overwhelmed when the

virus streaked around the world, infecting nearly

20 percent of the global population and killing

8 million in just seven months, the majority of

them healthy young adults. The pandemic also

had a deadly effect on economies: international

mobility of both people and goods screeched to

a halt, debilitating industries like tourism and

breaking global supply chains. Even locally,

normally bustling shops and office buildings sat

empty for months, devoid of both employees

and customers.

The pandemic blanketed the planet β€” though

disproportionate numbers died in Africa,

Southeast Asia, and Central America, where

the virus spread like wildfire in the absence

of official containment protocols. But even

in developed countries, containment was a

challenge. The United States’s initial policy of

β€œstrongly discouraging” citizens from flying

proved deadly in its leniency, accelerating the

spread of the virus not just within the U.S. but

across borders. However, a few countries did

fare better β€” China in particular. The Chinese

government’s quick imposition and enforcement

of mandatory quarantine for all citizens, as well

as its instant and near-hermetic sealing off of

all borders, saved millions of lives, stopping

the spread of the virus far earlier than in other

countries and enabling a swifter postpandemic

recovery.

 

China’s government was not the only one that

took extreme measures to protect its citizens

from risk and exposure. During the pandemic,

national leaders around the world flexed their

authority and imposed airtight rules and

restrictions, from the mandatory wearing of face

masks to body-temperature checks at the entries

to communal spaces like train stations and

supermarkets. Even after the pandemic faded,

this more authoritarian control and oversight

of citizens and their activities stuck and even

intensified. In order to protect themselves from

the spread of increasingly global problems β€” from

pandemics and transnational terrorism to

environmental crises and rising poverty β€” leaders

around the world took a firmer grip on power.

At first, the notion of a more controlled world

gained wide acceptance and approval. Citizens

willingly gave up some of their sovereignty β€” and

their privacy β€” to more paternalistic states

in exchange for greater safety and stability.

Citizens were more tolerant, and even eager, for

top-down direction and oversight, and national

leaders had more latitude to impose order in the

ways they saw fit. In developed countries, this

heightened oversight took many forms: biometric

IDs for all citizens, for example, and tighter

regulation of key industries whose stability

was deemed vital to national interests. In many

developed countries, enforced cooperation with a

suite of new regulations and agreements slowly

but steadily restored both order and, importantly,

economic growth.

Across the developing world, however, the

story was different β€” and much more variable.

Top-down authority took different forms

in different countries, hinging largely on

the capacity, caliber, and intentions of their

leaders. In countries with strong and thoughtful

leaders, citizens’ overall economic status

and quality of life increased. In India, for

example, air quality drastically improved after

2016, when the government outlawed highemitting

vehicles. In Ghana, the introduction

of ambitious government programs to improve

basic infrastructure and ensure the availability

of clean water for all her people led to a sharp

decline in water-borne diseases. But more

authoritarian leadership worked less well β€” and

in some cases tragically β€” in countries run by

irresponsible elites who used their increased

power to pursue their own interests at the

expense of their citizens.

There were other downsides, as the rise of

virulent nationalism created new hazards:

California Senate OKs bill to mail ballots for fall election

 

SACRAMENTO, Calif. β€”

Fearing a surge of coronavirus cases that could force a second statewide shutdown in the fall, the California Senate on Thursday approved a measure that would guarantee all registered voters get a ballot in the mail before the November election.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has already ordered ballots to be mailed. But Republican congressional candidate Darrell Issa and the Republican National Committee have sued, arguing his order is illegal. The bill is an attempt by lawmakers to make sure it happens anyway.

 

Election officials nationwide have explored vote-by-mail options this year because of the pandemic, prompting condemnation from President Donald Trump, who has claimed that β€œmail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged & even illegally printed out & fraudulently signed."

Five states - Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Utah - conduct elections entirely by mail. None have reported significant fraud.

Most California voters already vote by mail. More than 87% of registered voters are scheduled to receive a ballot in the mail before the November election, including all of the 4.3 million registered voters in Los Angeles County.

 

Still, some Senate Republicans opposed the bill because it would let county election officials count mail-in ballots if they are received within 20 days of the election. Right now, the law says mail-in ballots only count if they are received within three days of an election.

β€œThat does suggest to the people who have grave concerns about this that it encourages fraud,” Republican Sen. Patricia Bates said. β€œSeventeen days suggests there is some other agenda there, and we don't need more conspiracy theories going on with regards to our elections.”

 

Lawmakers included the extra time because they fear a second wave of coronavirus cases could force another round of stay-at-home orders that might delay ballots delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Also, the Postal Service has been consistently losing money as it faces competition from commercial shippers. The Postal Service has warned it could run out of money this year without a taxpayer bailout.

β€œWhile our post office is usually quite efficient, on occasions they are not as efficient as we would like them to be,” Democratic state Sen. Tom Umberg said. β€œWe don't want to disenfranchise anyone, not through any fault of their own.”

 

The California secretary of state's office says sending every voter a ballot will cost an extra $72 million. Most of it would fall on local governments, with the state paying $13 million for an outreach campaign. But lawmakers believe most of that cost could be covered by the federal government.

The Senate passed the bill with a 31-7 vote. It still must be approved by the state Assembly before it can become law.

Texas Dem: 'Even If People Loot, So What? Burn It to the Ground'

 

When protests over the police killing of George Floyd devolved into looting, vandalism, and arson across America, destroying black lives, black livelihoods, and black monuments, Democrats and liberals shamefully downplayed or even excused the violence because the perpetrators agreed with their political agenda. Yet it seems none have proven quite as vocal as a Democrat running for U.S. House in Texas’s 24th congressional district.

 

In a live digital event on Tuesday, Kim Olson complained about police snipers stationed on a roof at a protest she attended in Dallas, Texas.

 

β€œThey had snipers on the roof, what the hell you got snipers on the roof for in a peaceful march? Even if people loot, so what? Burn it to the ground, if that’s what it’s gonna take to fix our nation,” Olson said in video obtained by The Washington Examiner. β€œI don’t think β€” but I’m just saying, what are you going to do? Shoot us as we protest?”

 

β€œI mean, we really have fundamentally pivoted the militarization of our police force. … It used to be β€˜protect and serve,'” she complained.

 

Olson made the comment during a long answer to a question about her position on far-left calls to disband or defund police departments. The candidate began by admitting that while β€œdefunding” is a β€œtough word,” she supports shifting funding toward rehab centers and social workers.

 

β€œYou can’t just tackle the police, you’ve got to tackle some of the social injustice issues that are going on within our justice system,” Olson said. β€œYou can’t train racism out of folks.”

 

β€œThis quote is being taken out of context,” Rachel Perry, Olson’s campaign manager, told the Washington Examiner. β€œAs a combat vet, Colonel Olson knows first hand the human heartbreak of violence. She knows we cannot use force to fix a systemic problem of undue violence and discrimination perpetrated by those who are sworn to protect and serve. We have to rebuild from the ground up a color-blind public safety institution across America.”

 

Olson is the front-runner in the Democratic nomination in Texas’s 24th district, an open seat since Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas) is retiring. Cook Political Report rates the race a β€œRepublican toss up” and Politico also describes it as a β€œtoss-up.” Marchant won reelection by about 3 points in 2018.

 

Olson, a military veteran, faces school board trustee Candace Valenzuela in a runoff election on July 14. The winner will face former Mayor Beth Van Duyne (R-Irving).

 

While Olson became one of the first women to attend and graduate from flight school, her service was not without scandal. When she was stationed in Iraq, the Pentagon accused her of directing contracts to a private security firm that she helped operate. She has denied profiting from the arrangement, but she did plead guilty to charges that included creating the appearance of a conflict of interest, paid a $3,500 fine, and retired with an honorable discharge.

 

While the campaign insisted that Olson’s statement was taken out of context, that statement echoed a distressing trend among Democrats. Many have downplayed β€” if not excused β€” the destructive riots across America. As antifa militant rebels set up a rogue state in Seattle, Gov. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Mayor Jenny Durkan not only defended the rebels as β€œpeaceful” and β€œpatriotic,” but insisted it would be β€œillegal and unconstitutional” for President Donald Trump to suppress the armed insurrection.

 

Olson likely regrets her words, but the context does not excuse them. Democrats insist that America’s institutions are fundamentally racist, and this narrative justifies a violent revolution. President Trump is right to counter that America is fundamentally good, although it is undeniably flawed. Trump has condemned the horrific killing of George Floyd and he has championed criminal justice reform. But he will not abide violent riots or rebellions in American cities, and Democrats shouldn’t, either.

Academics Demand Econ Journal Purge Prof For Criticizing Defund Police Movement

 

Only 16 percent of Americans support slashing police budgets

 

Students and professors are demanding that an academic journal fire a professor who criticized efforts to defund the police.

 

Activists submitted a petition accusing University of Chicago economics professor Harald Uhlig of "trivializing the Black Lives Matter movement" on his Twitter account. The campaign came after Uhlig wrote that Black Lives Matter "torpedoed itself with its full-fledged support of #defundthepolice." Max Auffhammer, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and University of Michigan economics professor Justin Wolfers created the petition to oust Uhlig from his position of editor of the prestigious Journal of Political Economy.

 

Uhlig's comments "hurt and marginalize people of color and their allies in the economics profession," the petition said. "We do not question the right of Prof. Uhlig to make such comments, but we are strongly opposed to him holding a position of power as the editor of a prominent journal in our discipline."

 

Uhlig did not respond to request for comment.

 

In a tweet thread, Uhlig criticized the "#defundthepolice" movement and called for a serious conversation on police brutality and policy reforms instead of the proposalβ€”which is gaining traction on the left even as an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose it. A YouGov poll found that only 16 percent of Americans support decreasing law enforcement funding in the wake of nationwide protests; 65 percent oppose the idea.

 

"Time for sensible adults to enter back into the room and have serious, earnest, respectful conversations about it all: e.g. policy reform proposals by [the Democrats] and national healing. We need more police, we need to pay them more, we need to train them better," Uhlig said.

 

The petition, which is no longer active, allegedly urged Uhlig to resign his position as lead editor of the Journal of Political Economy. Uhlig has made comments on controversial topics in the past, including the riots and looting that followed the murder of George Floyd's death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, as well as the 2017 Charlottesville protest that left one dead.

If you are subscribing to this religious fervor we are seeing in the streets, in academia, in the media, and in private industry, be warned. You are the frog in the pot.

 

The woke mob spares no one. Being a heretic to their religiosity with a relatively small voice, I am not much of a scalp. However, if you are Tucker Carlson, you must be canceled. He refuses to bend to the mob. If you are Drew Brees, you will be made to atone for the sin of respecting the American flag. Except no amount of atoning will actually work.

 

Sarah Attkisson at Just the News compiled a list of the stunning number of resignations, more appropriately characterized excommunications, that have occurred in a matter of days due to insufficient wokeness. See, the Left will tell you silence is violence. However, if you speak or allow someone else to speak that doesn’t conform to the current orthodoxy, you must pay.

 

The secular left has had this strategy for a while. It went by the name cancel culture. Occasionally it worked, such as with Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, and some others. Occasionally it backfired and their target exploded. This was the case with people like Dave Rubin, Jordan Peterson, and others.

 

Now that the far left has taken it over, it has been structured to fill the God-shaped hole in these people’s hearts as they are pursuing it with a zeal that is unnerving and a bit shocking. Some people are trying to preempt it such as the country trio Lady Antebellum. They have now changed the band name to Lady A. Because I guess we all won’t remember what the A stands for or something.

 

So how has this gone from mobbing to a legitimate secular religion? It now simply has all the features. For those of us who use the Old and New Testaments in our faith, we have the concept of original sin. In his speech to the nation, Barack Obama redefined this for white Americans, regardless of where you come from and when you got here. He explicitly said slavery is our collective original sin and where you exacted your white privilege.

 

That is a wild departure. Sin is normally an individual concept. You confess, atone or apologize for things you personally have done wrong. In the Church of Woke, you are responsible for the sins of your forefathers, associates, and family members. In the case of original sin, you are responsible for the sin of the nation at its founding. Heavy burden my friend.

 

There is also a set of incomprehensible teachings. We call them grievance studies, or the curriculum your children must take that teach them to hate America because it was discovered by and founded by really bad, awful, terrible, racist, misogynistic, men. Did you know Columbus didn’t have a single woman on his senior crew?

 

Because these are incomprehensible, mostly because they are poorly written, based on emotion and not facts and nearly devoid of any real data or verifiable history, we need interpreters. These are the people you see in online videos leading chants that may remind you of a catechism. The leader says something, and the crowd repeats it back.

 

Recently, the Church of Woke got ceremonies. This was new. You may have seen the videos of cops, guardsmen, and large groups of white people kneeling in front of black people to atone for the original sin of slavery and other things these people have probably never done. We have even had feet washing. Quite a spectacle really.

San Francisco police won't respond to non-criminal calls

 

SAN FRANCISCO β€”

San Francisco police will stop responding to neighbor disputes, reports on homeless people, school discipline interventions and other non-criminal activities as part of a police reform plan the mayor announced Thursday.

Mayor London Breed said in a news release that on calls that don't involve a threat to public safety, police would be replaced by trained, unarmed professionals to limit unnecessary confrontation between the police department and the community.

β€œWe know that a lack of equity in our society overall leads to a lot of the problems that police are being asked to solve," she said in the release. "We are going to keep going with these additional reforms and continuing to find ways to reinvest in communities that have historically been underserved and harmed by systemic racism.”

 

Breed’s said as part of police reforms, the city will also strengthen accountability policies, ban the use of military-grade weapons and divert funding to the African-American community.

The city will develop its plan over the next year and follow models like the Cahoots program in Eugene, Ore., Breed said. That community-based crisis program employs social workers and mental health workers to respond to disturbances where crimes are not being committed.

White House Sets Asylum Reform to Block Economic Migrants

 

President Donald Trump’s administration posted a new regulation to deter economic migrants from seeking asylum in the United States.

 

The draft was immediately slammed by pro-migration groups, who object to Trump’s closure of the southern border to economic immigrants since early 2020, and insist that the United States is a nation for immigrants. β€œThe Trump Administration’s renewed efforts to dismantle our nation’s asylum system are abhorrent, un-American, and illegal,” said a statement by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). β€œThis President is attempting to rewrite our immigration laws in direct contravention of duly enacted statutes and clear congressional intent … We can and must continue to be a beacon of hope and freedom across the world.” Since roughly 2011, more than two million migrants β€” plus roughly 500,000 β€œUnaccompanied Alien Children” β€” from Central America have moved into the United States. They have rationally used loose asylum rules and loopholes to migrate into the United States in search of work, safe neighborhoods, and decent K-12 schools. Few have been sent home because the courts are clogged and underfunded by Congress.

 

That massive migration has been great for the migrants β€” and for white-collar employers, real estate owners, landlords, government aid workers, and immigration lawyers. But it has been a disaster to blue-collar Americans. They have lost jobs and wages, cheap housing, K-12 opportunities for their kids – as well as political support from pro-migrant, white-collar Democrats, and college-graduate progressives. The migration has also caused much turmoil in Central American countries because the exit of many young men and women deflate the political and economic reforms needed to grow their nation’s economies. Trump used a variety of diplomatic threats and legal reforms to block the migration in early 2020. Democrats and business groups have fought Trump at every step, partly because almost 150 million people around the world who want to become workers, renters, and consumers in the United States said a 2017 Gallup survey.

 

The Justice Department explained the new policy: [The Departments] submitted to the Federal Register for publication a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would amend multiple provisions of the Departments’ regulations to create more efficient procedures for the adjudication of claims for asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) regulations. According to the department, the draft regulation would: Amend the regulations governing credible fear determinations so that individuals found to have such a fear will have their claims for asylum, withholding of removal, or protection under the CAT adjudicated by an immigration judge in streamlined proceedings, rather than in immigration court proceedings conducted under section 240 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA); Permit immigration judges to pretermit asylum applications without a hearing if the application does not demonstrate prima facie eligibility for relief; Clarify standards for the adjudication of asylum and withholding claims including amendments to the definitions of the terms β€œparticular social group,” β€œpolitical opinion,” β€œpersecution,” and β€œfirm resettlement”; Raise the burden of proof for the threshold screening of withholding and CAT protection claims from β€œsignificant possibility” to a β€œreasonable possibility” standard;

 

The new rules would largely bar migrants who traveled through various safe countries to get to the United States. The rule would also narrow the categories of people who could claim membership of a persecuted β€œparticular social group”: Economic migrants have claimed membership in those groups to win entry, work permits, and residency in the United States. That new policy reverses the trend set by President Barack Obama’s deputies. For example, those deputies widened the rules to provide asylum to Central American women who said their husbands physically abused them. The new regulation β€œdoes not β€˜close loopholes’; it’s not β€˜legally focused’, β€˜technical’, or β€˜somewhat vague’. European Court of Human Rights backs BDS activists convicted in France, orders Paris to pay €101,000 in compensation

 

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that France violated the rights of 11 pro-Palestinian activists when it convicted them for campaigning against Israeli goods, and has ordered the government to pay damages.

 

The criminal conviction against the activists with the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement β€œhad no relevant and sufficient grounds,” the ECHR said in its ruling on Thursday, arguing that their basic right to freedom of expression had been violated. The court ordered France to pay €101,000 ($115,000) in compensation to the activists.

 

The case dates back to 2009 when a group of protesters led by French activist Jean-Michel Baldassi staged a demonstration in a hypermarket in the eastern French town of Illzach. The group handed out leaflets calling for various forms of boycott against Israel in response to its treatment of Palestinians and occupation of the Palestinian territories.

 

Israel has long claimed that the movement is driven by anti-Semitism and a desire to deny Israel’s right to exist.The French authorities charged the BDS activists with incitement to economic discrimination, and promoting racism and anti-Semitism.

 

France’s highest court of appeals upheld the sentence in 2015. The defendants were each handed down a suspended fine of €1,000 ($1,133) and ordered to pay a total of €13,000 ($14,730) in legal fees and donations to organizations promoting French-Israeli friendship and combating anti-Semitism.

A federal judge, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, says federal immigration agents arresting criminal illegal aliens at New York state courthouses is β€œillegal.” United States District Court Judge Jed Rakoff ruled on Wednesday that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must not arrest criminal illegal aliens as they are leaving court in New York. He wrote: pecifically, the Court declares ICE’s policy of courthouse arrests … to be illegal, and hereby enjoins ICE from conducting any civil arrests on the premises or grounds of New York State courthouses, as well as such arrests of anyone required to travel to a New York State courthouse as a party or witness to a lawsuit.

 

Attorneys for New York state and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez had filed suit against ICE for arresting criminal illegal aliens at courthouses. In 2019, ICE agents took 173 illegal aliens into custody at courthouses. In 2018, they arrested 107 illegal aliens at courthouses. The attorneys and Gonzalez complained that illegal aliens had become stricken with fear. β€œAccording to plaintiffs, not only do these immigration arrests make certain parties and witnesses fear coming to court, but the temporary chaos they create disrupts court proceedings and makes it impossible for judges to do their jobs effectively,”

 

The court ruling could have widespread implications on ICE’s already limited ability to arrest and deport illegal aliens. Last year, ICE agents arrested more than 143,000 illegal aliens and deported nearly 268,000 illegal aliens. There remain anywhere between 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York. Bankrupt Hertz wants to sell up to $1B in new shares after stock spikes

 

Hertz Global Holdings Inc. wants to capitalize on the rally in its stock seen earlier this week by selling up to $1 billion in shares, despite a bankruptcy that threatens to wipe them out.

 

Hertz's shares rose to $5.53 earlier this week, a nearly 10-fold increase over their closing price of 56 cents following the company's May 22 bankruptcy filing.

 

Now the company is asking a bankruptcy judge to approve a deal with Jefferies LLC to allow the potential sale of 246.8 million unissued shares.The price of Hertz stock has fallen from this week's earlier high, closing Thursday at $2.06 a share, but the company said its stock is still actively traded.

 

Hertz also said Thursday it plans to ask the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., for permission to get out of leases for 144,372 vehicles, a move it says would save it about $80.3 million a month. Last year, its U.S. fleet peaked at 567,000 vehicles.

 

Jared Ellias, a law professor at the University of California Hastings College of Law, said he has studied hundreds of bankruptcies and never seen a company try to fund a case with an equity offering at the start of chapter 11.

Hertz shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange, which has moved to delist the company. Hertz has appealed the NYSE notice of delisting. Shares of bankrupt companies are typically worthless, save for rare instances in which the debt is repaid in full and money is left over for equity holders.

 

The shares would have to sell for more than $4 each for Hertz to hit $1 billion. Hertz's roughly $3 billion in corporate bonds were trading earlier this week at around 40 cents on the dollar, indicating little faith among creditors they will be repaid in full.

 

A Hertz spokesperson wasn't immediately available for comment.

Suspect in 'ambush attack' of California deputy pronounced dead at scene, sheriff says

 

A California man who is suspected to have shot a San Luis Obispo County deputy during an "ambush attack" on the local police department Wednesday was shot and killed after a standoff with officers late Thursday afternoon.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office said that officers confronted Mason Lira, 26, in Paso Robles after receiving reports of a shot officer just after 2 p.m.

"Law enforcement officers were stationed in this area as part of a containment team assigned to keep the suspect, Mason Lira, from evading officers who were beginning a search of the riverbed," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

"Officers arrived at the scene and conducted a search for the suspect, when the suspect opened fire on the officers, wounding two of them," it added.

According to the report, officers found Mira hiding in the riverbed. Mira then tried to flee on foot, but was fatally shot by pursuing officers. The sheriff's office said that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news of Mira's death comes after he allegedly shot a sheriff's deputy Wednesday when he opened fire on the Paso Robles Police Department building at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The State Department inspector general whose recent dismissal ignited a political firestorm sent copies detailing a sensitive investigation to his personal email account, according to a probe into his conduct run by the Defense Department's inspector general. The inquiry report, dated March 17, confirms that fired State Department inspector general Steve Linick was the subject of a broad investigation related to the leaks of politically charged materials to journalists, specifically a draft evaluation report into Brian Hook, the State Department’s top Iran official. The report, which was provided to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, concluded that while Linick was permitted to send information to his personal email account to facilitate access while traveling, he was the only official in that office to have done so. The disclosure is likely to raise new questions about Linick’s suspected role in leaking sensitive information to the press. State Department officials close to Pompeo said that Linick was fired in part for refusing to allow an independent probe to be conducted into his actions. Linick was ordered by superiors to report the unauthorized leaks to the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, according to Brian Bulatao, the undersecretary of state for management and a close ally of Pompeo’s. Bulatao alleged that Linick did not obey this order, instead selecting his own peer reviewer. Additionally, Linick allegedly refused to share the results of this investigation with the State Department. A Republican congressional staffer familiar with the investigation said there is increasing evidence that Linick was the source of the unauthorized leaks about Hook. "They used official and unofficial channels to make sure the report into Hook was flagged for multiple parties on and off the Hill, guaranteeing that it would eventually leak," according to the source, who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon on background about the investigation. "They used private accounts that ensured they could cover their tracks. This was a hit job."

 

Federal employees are generally prohibited from moving official documents into their personal email accounts for security concerns and the potential for unauthorized leaks. The State Department investigated similar claims about former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who violated department rules by using a homebrewed server to store sensitive and confidential information. Parts of the DOD’s IG report, including the names of over a dozen officials interviewed in connection with the investigation into Linick, remain redacted.

A man in California has been charged with poisoning eight homeless people with a substance described as "twice as strong" as pepper spray.

 

William Robert Cable, 38, is accused of giving at least eight people food laced with oleoresin capsicum and filming them as they became ill.

Several of the alleged victims were hospitalised and authorities believe the suspect could have targeted others.

Mr Cable faces up to 19 years in prison if convicted.

"These human beings were preyed upon because they are vulnerable," Orange County's district attorney Todd Spitzer said.

"They were exploited and poisoned as part of a twisted form of entertainment, and their pain was recorded so that it could be relived by their attacker over and over again."

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the suspect approached vulnerable homeless people in the Huntington Beach area in May and offered them food laced with a substance "twice as strong" as the pepper spray used by police.

Oleoresin capsicum is derived from chilli plants and is the main active ingredient used in pepper spray. The strength of each spray varies between manufacturers.

Some of the victims were told they would be taking part in a "spicy food challenge" and were given beer to encourage them to take part, while others were unaware the food had been tampered with.

Upon eating the food, they suffered reactions including seizure-like symptoms, difficulty breathing and vomiting, the District Attorney's Office said.

Cable, who is being held on $500,000 bail, was arrested last month and faces eight charges of poisoning, as well as a further count because one of the victims was elderly. He has also been charged with involving a minor in the attacks.

Officials in Orange County have appealed for the public to help identify any further victims or suspects.

Last year a Spanish YouTuber was sentenced to 15 months in prison after tricking a homeless man into eating an Oreo biscuit filled with toothpaste.

It was another 15 years before the colonial assembly granted free whites, blacks and Indians permission to own black slaves.

Westpac could face more allegations of breaches as AUSTRAC digs deeper

 

The financial crimes watchdog will conduct a deeper probe into Westpac over its failure to properly vet international transactions potentially linked to child exploitation that could increase by over 20 times the number of alleged breaches of anti-money laundering laws the bank faces.

 

The country's second largest bank was thrown into turmoil last November when the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) accused it of breaching anti-money laundering laws over 23 million times, including a failure to properly vet payments potentially linked to paedophilia.

 

The lawsuit led to the resignation of chief executive Brian Hartzer and the early retirement of veteran chairman Lindsay Maxsted. Furious shareholders also voted for a second strike against the bank's executive pay report at its AGM.

 

In the wake of the scandal, the bank reviewed its payments monitoring processes and updated its technology to betterdetect evidence of payments potentially linked to paedophilia. This resulted in the discovery of an additional 272 customers with payment transaction patterns that were indicative of child exploitation and Westpac self-reported these to AUSTRAC in December.

 

The regulator informed Westpac it will further probe these transactions and may broaden its lawsuit to include additional anti-money laundering breaches if any are found.

 

Westpac has indicated it will not defend a substantial majority of the initial breaches alleged by AUSTRAC and has set aside $900 million to cover an expected penalty. It is unclear if this provision will now need to be increased as the bank braces to receive the largest fine in Australian corporate history.

City officials are trying to quickly broker a deal but because there is no centralized leadership among protesters, getting all the voices at the table remains a challenge.

Complaints about police officers loafing in congressman’s office during looting sparks outrage from City Hall.

 

It is a sad time to be a good cop in America.

 

Because no matter what a good cop does, a bad cop shows up.

 

A good cop stands nose to nose with an angry protester spitting insults and he or she doesn’t flinch; then a bad cop knocks down a 70-something-year-old man who is trying to support the new civil rights movement.

 

A good cop takes a knee, or hugs a protester, or marches lock-step with a crowd of young blacks under the β€œBlack Lives Matter” banner, then a bad cop gives the whole world the finger by flipping off a protester in a crowd where everyone is live-streaming every step.

 

So the allegation that Chicago police officers made themselves at home in Congressman Bobby Rush’s burglarized campaign office located in a South Side strip mall that was being looted is not as shocking as it is galling.

 

According to Rush, 13 Chicago police officers β€” including three supervisors β€” slept on a couch, popped popcorn and drank coffee while looters ransacked the strip mall where Rush’s campaign office is located.

 

Mayor Lori Lightfoot has vowed to track down the officers involved. Discipline will be forthcoming.

 

β€œYou know who you are. You know what you did. Don’t make us come find you,” the mayor said, during an emotional news conference.

 

While she’s at it, maybe she could track down the police officers that should have been at the Jewel-Osco store on 75th Street and Stony Island Avenue when it was being looted in broad daylight on June 1.

 

The looting was so brazen, with people calmly entering the store and exiting the grocery store pushing overflowing shopping carts, it looked like a fire sale.

 

There wasn’t a cop in sight.

 

According to the mayor, the police officers that were in Rush’s campaign office in the Grand Boulevard Plaza at 54th and Wentworth for β€œfour or five” hours β€œcame in and out,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

 

I have to digress here: Are bad cops just dumb cops?

 

I mean, shouldn’t they have known the congressman’s campaign office would have a security camera? Even if there is a legitimate explanation as to why the police officers were holed up in the congressman’s campaign office while all hell was breaking loose next door, shouldn’t at least one supervisor have reached out to the congressman to explain the circumstances?

 

The irony is striking.

 

In the midst of a violent uprising, where property was being stolen and/or destroyed, these cops chose to camp out in the office of not just a congressman, but a former ranking member of the Black Panther Party.

 

Is there anyone in America who doesn’t know about the enmity that existed between the Black Panther Party and police?

 

Rush certainly hasn’t forgotten.
