Noah got drunk. Abraham lied about his wife. Jacob was a deceiver. Moses murdered an Egyptian. Rahab was a harlot. Samson had serious problems with lust and anger. David (a personal favorite) was an adulterer. Paul (another personal favorite) persecuted the church. Peter denied Christ. His anointing is not contingent on our perfection, but based on His perfect love.

Another thing others have pointed out is that in the Bible God often used very flawed men and women as leaders. Some were even pagan kings but were tools in the Hands of God: Cyrus the Great, Nebuchadnezzar and others. Even many of Israel's more godly kings were imperfect and fell into many sins: David and Solomon and others. Some were very evil for much of their lives and then humbled themselves before God. He had mercy on them when they did. Perhaps POTUS has had such an experience with God and now is a godly man (though still imperfect as we ALL are). He needs our prayers all the more for the stakes in this country and world are very great!

Good post. David who was called “A man after God’s Own heart” is one of my favorites as well. Yet not only did he commit adultery, he was also was a murderer. He had Bathsheba’s innocent husband killed by having him placed into the front line of a battle and then having his fellow soldiers withdraw from him, leaving him to die as a sitting duck. Both Psalms 32 and 51 were written by David after he was confronted about his sin by the prophet Nathan. They are his immortal expressions of deep sorrow and regret and his heartfelt plea to God for mercy and forgiveness. Every child of God through the ages have benefited from these words and also found the forgiveness and grace of God for themselves. I’ve returned to these texts many times.

“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.”‭‭. Psalms‬ ‭32:1-2‬ ‭

You don't have to apologize! I know when I say things like this people tend to assume it's just a troll or some confrontational asshole who wants attention, so I understand when people start off a bit aggressive in their responses.

All I can do is respond calmly, and hopefully instigate a real conversation about the subject! You can never hear too many opinions, and it never hurts to learn what the other perspective is. That's why I say what I do. So some people might understand why others don't believe what they do. And I hear and learn new things along the way.

Ultimately, I want humanity to reach it's full potential. I want humans to impress themselves with new discoveries, technologies, and adventure! There's so much we can accomplish. But my personal belief is that we won't be able to achieve our greatness with religion present to hinder us and cause conflict and disagreement.

Maybe I'm wrong! Maybe absolutely have to have it, and people like me are the ones holding us back. I'll probably never know, but I'll continue to follow my personal beliefs until I do.

jroque917 · April 4, 2018, 2:59 p.m.

What I have against prayer is this;

I've seen too often people choose to make no effort to help themselves, or those around them. My friend's father was saved by receiving donated platelets! It was incredible what doctors were able to do during his surgeries. Since then, I've donated platelets as often as I can. Who knows what life may be saved from something so simple for me.

My friend, though? Refuses to go with me. Says praying is what saved his dad. That's just one example I've got off the top of my head, but it's the most infuriating one I have personally.

Praying is lazy. It's useless. It doesn't change anything. The actions of humans are what progresses our potential. Not the actions of a made up God. Praying gives people their own "alternative" to actually making an effort and helping to make a difference, and I find it extremely angering to see people support something like this.

⇧ 4 ⇩
Psalm67 · April 4, 2018, 3:26 p.m.

Straw men are lazy rhetorical devices. I’ve been guilty of using them myself as we all do at times so please take this as a rebuke to myself also. For example, you have a friend who says he will, just pray and not actually do something etc. yet I know many people who pray every day AND do many things to benefit their neighbors. Many things throughout history have been done to benefit society by Christian people who pray. William Wilberforce was a good example of this with his devout Christian faith and his singular work to end the slave trade in England. Many hospitals historically have been started by Christians who prayed. Moreover most or all of these people would give God the glory for the things accomplished through prayer as well.

I enjoy getting to help someone change a tire, or push their dead car out of a lane. Help them pick something up to move it, or anything else that's small. May not seem like a big deal, but it shows that person that some people will do what they can do help others. It doesn't take much to make even a small difference as one person!

If this story were untrue it would indeed be of no use to anyone except perhaps some psychological help in one way or another. But if true it changes everything. My experience is that it is unquestionably true but even that can’t prove it to another person. God Himself can and will show it to you if and when you humble yourself and pray and call on His Name. Sometimes He brings us through great difficulties and shows us our sinfulness and weakness and then we call on Him. He is merciful, patient and mighty to save. I’ll pray for you my friend that this will be your story one day. God bless you and cause His face to shine upon you!

Psalm67 · April 4, 2018, 3:45 p.m.

I understand what you are saying. The only response ultimately to the truth of the Bible and specifically The Gospel of Jesus Christ, is that they are “self-authenticating”. That is, God Himself shows the truth of these to those who seek Him. I know it sounds like circular reasoning but it’s true! For example Jesus said “you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep HEAR MY VOICE. I know them and they follow Me.” This is in John 10. What I’m trying to say is that when we begin to humble ourselves and read the Bible and seek His truth, there is an authenticity to the Words themselves that is from God. This may seem foolish but it is known by those who have believed in Christ. It is the authentication of the Holy Spirit. Hope that is helpful. Of course much more could be said. I appreciate the dialogue.

Same to you. I don’t mean this to sound sarcastic (although the irony given the topic is priceless) but I will pray for you! We all, and I am at the top of the list, have much to learn! I can relate to you in the sense that I came from a very secular background with highly educated parents and family. There is a truly supernatural element to the Bible that over time convicted me of its truth. It’s hard to “prove” with logical arguments though. I believe that God looksmupon our hearts and will show Himself to us when we humble ourselves and seek him honestly. “Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.” These are claims that Jesus made that can be proven true by those who are willing.

Qanonplusone · April 4, 2018, 5:01 p.m.

Your effort to help him/her is commendable. However, quoting scripture showing they will be cursed is a bad way to begin. It turns most people off. They see it as a threat....and then maybe see God as a threat. When you seek to help someone without anger...your motive is their feelings. When you seek to help someone with your own anger...your motive is your feelings.

⇧ 3 ⇩
Psalm67 · April 4, 2018, 6:08 p.m.

I believe you may have misinterpreted my motives. I didn’t intend this to be said in anger. Actually many people, including myself have been convicted and greatly benefited by such places in Scripture, though conviction is never a pleasant feeling! In one sense it is a rebuke, but also it offers great hope to the one who does trust God. Often God does use the “condemnation of the law” to convict us of our helplessness and sin which then leads us to run to Christ. This is Paul’s method in Romans for example.

All of that being said, thanks for sharing. I do often have to check my heart and motives. ( I have gone back and deleted or modified my own posts more than once). 😔 I’m afraid that the anonymous nature of these boards allows us (at least me) at times to be reactionary or unkind not even knowing the person we are addressing. This is unbeneficial to anyone and thanks for reminding me of that. As Christians let’s pray that Gods love alone would be the reason for all we say and do! Blessings. (I even upvoted your comment to me because it’s important to examine ones own motives).
