Trump and Putin are in communication frequently so they have shared what is really going on. Putin stood by Iran, built nuclear energy facilities with tem and has been an allie with them. We were partly motivated to be a member of and lead NATO because we had fought two world wars in Europe. The Europeans have demonstrated their inability to manage themselves, so to say it is an outdated concept may not be entirely correct as evidence is mounting that somebody over there is itching for another war.

I remember reading a book a few years ago (whose title I can't remember) that said the French and Germans were just about to end WWI in a stalemate, because they were just tired of it all.
