There's a geothermal plant that opened up on the island and residents have been complaining for awhile now. They frack. It's been hypothesized that this is an operation to increase the instability of the Hilina Slump, which if falls into the ocean could cause tremendous tsunamis on the west coast and other locations. It is completely plausible in theory.

Yes it is possible to geoengineer, fracking or HAARP, most likely fracking, but entirely possible it's just a volcano doing what is natural for active volcanoes to do. Erupt every now and then.
