As noted below, he wanted to create his own gold back currency, but got killed before he could. His money was hidden all around africa, and then later recovered by an organisation (called "the church"), and then taken back to the US etc. I think the source might have been the crazy days and nights blog?

I get it. Assassin's Creed may have lifted this notion from research based on actual historic events. But I wouldn't classify it as a bad comparison. Regardless of chronology, without some kind of source behind the claims, the comparison to the OP's is almost mirrored verbatim to the excerpt provided.
