Planes do provide air cover but you also have subs and ships to provide cover against other naval vessels and our naval vessels can supplement that defensive network. It is multi-layered. The Jets could be for Air to Air cover from other jets. The sub is for tracking missile launches and intercepting.

Regarding the exhaust cloud, when you look at that island, there is an area to the right of the track at the island level that may be exhaust, but it is well-hidden by the low cloud cover.

Once it leaves the ground, solid or liquid-fueled 1st Stages burn clean and bright. We are talking 500 feet of gas then nothing.

The pic is not great, but it looks like a ground or water-launched missile but not enough shown to evidence an arc that any missile usually takes when a ballistic trajectory

WASHINGTON — Cyberattacks sponsored by the Chinese government infiltrated a U.S. Navy contractor’s computers, allowing digital thieves to access sensitive data related to secret Navy projects on a submarine anti-ship missile.

The information stolen was stored on the contractor’s unclassified network despite being “highly sensitive nature,” according to information obtained by the Washington Post.

According to the report, 614 gigabytes of material on a closely held project known as Sea Dragon were taken. Contracted for the military organization Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Sea Dragon aims to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines.

Cmdr. Bill Speaks, Navy spokesman, confirmed that measures exist which “require companies to notify the government when a ‘cyber incident’ has occurred,” as had occurred in this instance.

Experts have witnessed a recent “reemergence” of China-based hacking groups that had seemed to have “gone dormant for a while,” said Cristiana Brafman Kittner, principal analyst at cybersecurity firm FireEye.

China has increasingly grown not only as an economic cyberthreat, but an online menace to national security as well.

Navyfag here. If that is indeed an SM-3, that means it's possible a Ballistic Missile was fired. SM-3s primary mission is anti-ballistic missile defense (BMD). Range is about 1350 miles. If there was a ballistic missile, then it would have passed Alaska (see pic). Meaning that it was probably meant for the west coast. Not sure where, but just trying to help add to the conversation.
