Trump and his allies respond with pseudo-science as US death toll hits 150,000

 

On the day the US surpassed another tragic milestone 150,000 coronavirus deaths it became ever clearer that pseudo-science, ideological posturing and mocking the idea of a national strategy are no way to fight a deadly pandemic.

 

Yet President Donald Trump, his friends in Congress, members of his Cabinet, senior staff and supporters are still setting out to undermine the fact-based approaches that might get the virus under control and restore normal life.

 

Trump headed to Texas, currently a massive coronavirus hotspot, on a distraction mission, enjoying a photo op at an oil rig after another episode of his traveling medicine show promoting hydroxychloroquine.

 

"All I want to do is save lives," Trump said of a drug that his own government regulators say is not an effective cure for Covid-19.

 

But he was not accompanied on his trip by Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, who discovered before getting aboard Air Force One that he had Covid-19. The congressman tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday morning during a pre-flight screening at the White House.

 

Gohmert has ostentatiously avoided wearing a mask. And he used his diagnosis thanks to that White House test to further trash science and undermine government medical advice by misleadingly suggesting his recent use of a face covering may have gotten him sick.

This new development kind of fits a pattern. POTUS likes big traditional US companies and brands. The ones that made America great before. Harley Davidson, Boeing, Pan Am, now KODAK. Shimon Peres, then the deputy defense minister who later would lead the country as prime minister for two stints and then become president, improvised the statement when he was surprised by Kennedy during a meeting Peres had scheduled with Kennedy’s adviser, Myer Feldman, who also functioned as the administration’s liaison to Israel and the U.S. Jewish community. Unbeknownst to Peres, Kennedy and Feldman had planned the “surprise” encounter.

"PizzaGate's unfounded claim emerged during the 2016 election. Later that year, a gunman appeared and fired an AR-15 inside the pizzeria, saying he was trying to rescue non-existent child sex slaves.

 

Now, a report from the Internet trust tool NewsGuard has found that the coronavirus pandemic is clearly helping this American ideology establish itself in Europe.

 

In the report, NewsGuard sees an increase in QAnon groups and social media pages in April, as the blockages caused by the new virus left millions of people practically confined to their homes.

 

Coronavirus conspiracies increased along with increased infections.

 

Such claims acted as a "gateway drug" to QAnon, providing Europeans with the "perfect way to" the online sect, Chine Labbe, managing editor for Europe at NewsGuard, told CNN.

 

QAnon started out as a one-time conspiracy with a cryptic anonymous post on the 4chan online forum in 2017. The person behind this, who followers would later call "Q", made the false claim that Hillary Clinton was going to be arrested. There was no such arrest.

But similar posts fueling other arrest claims and "deep state" actions continued to appear on 4chan. It is unclear who was behind the posts, or whether the same person posted the ones that followed.

 

QAnon supporters have compared the early posts, and the later posts, with breadcrumbs or "drops," like Hansel and Gretel, as they refer to them.

 

Followers of QAnon, whose online behavior has been compared by analysts to a virtual cult, spread the unfounded claims, amplifying them with manipulated or out-of-context evidence posted on social media in an attempt to back up the allegations.

 

Experts fear that the "dedication QAnon supporters have to their beliefs also provides an opportunity for foreign interference to use these narratives to their advantage," Aoife Gallagher, an analyst with the Institute's Digital Research Unit for CNN, told CNN the Strategic Dialogue (ISD)."

YouTube is trying to crack down on QAnon videos. It’s not working

 

The far-right group QAnon has caught the attention of the public in recent weeks for its ability to maneuver social media platforms to spread misinformation and create viral attention for its conspiracy theories.

Social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok have taken action against the group after long-disproved conspiracy theories like #PizzaGate gained new attention, banning accounts and disabling its popular hashtags from showing up in search. Although both platforms have proved to be fertile ground for the group, QAnon has flourished on YouTube for years — despite the company’s investments in moderating it.

Now, the video platform is trying to stop QAnon videos from appearing in users’ recommendations, but a Digital Trends test found that the conspiracy theory videos still appear in prominent places on the YouTube homepage.

Thanks to the nature of YouTube itself, the platform proved to be the premier place where long-form, pseudo documentaries and talk shows deciphering clues or “breadcrumbs” dropped by “Q” thrived. Those interested in QAnon theories could easily find other users recommending additional videos in the comment section or through YouTube’s recommendation algorithms — a feature that has come under fire from critics as an easy way to “radicalize” viewers.

But now, if you type “QAnon” into the search bar of YouTube, your screen will “prominently surface authoritative sources” like news organizations and experts — part of YouTube’s plan to raise up factual content to combat misinformation. YouTube has also started to feature text boxes and information panels linking to third-party sources. Digital Trends found that YouTube provides a link to the Wikipedia article about QAnon under related videos.

"Last week Twitter announced it would stop promoting content associated with QAnon – a baseless internet conspiracy theory that has had an outsized impact on political discourse, causing real-world harm through targeted harassment campaigns.

 

But does filtering out conspiracy theorists help public discourse – or can it strengthen their paranoia that they are being suppressed? And can these ideas be fought with education? We spoke to experts to see whether it will work.

 

Russell Muirhead, who co-authored the book A Lot of People Are Saying, which digs into how misinformation spreads online, says that social media work to validate and legitimize conspiracy theorizing and misinformation.

 

“On a platform like Twitter, and to some extent on Facebook and YouTube, repetition comes to substitute validation. If enough people like the tweet, or watch the video, or like the video on YouTube, it confers a kind of legitimacy,” he says.

 

He gives the example of a common refrain of Donald Trump’s to exemplify this: Trump will say “I don’t know if it’s true but a lot of people are saying it” – as if people simply repeating misinformation means it must have some truth to it.

 

“That’s very threatening to our ability to understand the world and to democratic politics. Because anything people retweet enough times seems true – regardless of whether or not it is,” he says.

 

Muirhead points out that before social media, it was the norm for media outlets to have a gatekeeping function. Editors, the gatekeepers of traditional media, are tasked everyday with deciding what makes it on air or into print – and an established first criterion is truthfulness:

 

“The more likely a claim is to be judged false, the less likely the editor will decide to put it in the paper or on the air. What’s happened with Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter is the gatekeeping function has been displaced: anybody can say anything to anyone in the whole world, pretty much for free,” he says.

 

Dr Whitney Phillips, author of This is Why we Can’t Have Nice Things, points out that a “marketplace of ideas approach” to misinformation (which posits that if you combat problematic speech with more speech, the truth will eventually prevail) doesn’t work in our current online environment."

A Manhattan federal judge on Wednesday evening agreed to postpone unsealing depositions related to the sex life of Ghislaine Maxwell until the alleged madam can file an appeal.

 

The order by Judge Loretta Preska will, for two business days, block the release of documents that relate to a deposition Maxwell gave as part of a now-settled civil defamation lawsuit filed against her in 2015 by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre.

 

Preska ordered the documents unsealed in a court hearing last week, but gave Maxwell’s legal team a week to file an appeal with the Second Circuit Court.

 

If the circuit court does not order them to remain sealed, the documents will be made public Monday, according to Preska’s order.

 

In her memo Wednesday evening, Preska also rejected Maxwell’s request that she reconsider her own decision to unseal the documents.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture removed an infographic about ‘whiteness’ from their online portal “Talking About Race” after they received criticism from Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri.

In response to Hawley’s initial July 20 letter inquiring about the online race-based curriculum, Lonnie Bunch, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, responded with her own letter on Monday, obtained by The Federalist.

She said that the infographic, which was approved across various museum departments, was intended to “spark questions and conversations,” and also explained why, following the resulting backlash, it was removed from the website.

“The intent of the portal is to provide resources to assist the public in engaging in conversations about race.”

“We recognize that a specific chart presented de-contextualized information that did not contribute to productive, informed conversations. We erred in including the chart, and therefore we eliminated it from our portal,” the letter read.

The infographic was titled “Aspects & Assumptions of Whiteness & White Culture in the United States.”

It contained a definition of “white dominant culture” and listed key attributes and qualities associated with “whiteness,” such as “rugged individualism,” “self-reliance,” hard work and respect for authority.

Trutanich for the District of Nevada, Special Agent in Charge Aaron C. Rouse of the FBI, and Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Parshall’s initial appearance in federal court on the new criminal complaint has not yet been scheduled.

According to court documents, Parshall was arrested on May 30, 2020. Law enforcement had learned of Parshall’s alleged participation in a conspiracy to cause destruction during protests that evening in Las Vegas, and of his alleged membership in the “Boogaloo” movement, a term used by extremists to signify a coming civil war and/or collapse of society. When law enforcement officers executed search warrants after the arrest, they located 10 images of child pornography, as well as numerous images of child erotica, on Parshall’s cellular phone

The minimum statutory penalty for the offense of sexual exploitation of children is 15 years in prison, and the maximum statutory penalty is 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A criminal complaint is merely an allegation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Dr. Harvey Risch, a noted Yale epidemiologist, has accused White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci of waging a "misinformation campaign" against the drug hydroxychloroquine, claiming the medication has shown consistently encouraging results in treating COVID-19 when used properly.

Hydroxychloroquine has been at the center of a protracted political debate since March, when President Trump cited the drug as a promising possible treatment for the novel coronavirus. HCQ has long been used by doctors to treat malaria along with other syndromes such as arthritis and lupus. The World Health Organization lists it as an essential medicine, while nearly five million Americans hold prescriptions for it.

Since Trump's speculative endorsement of the drug, media outlets and medical officials have for several months aggressively promoted various medical trials that have determined the drug has no effectiveness in fighting COVID-19; many commentators have also insisted, in spite of the drug's decades-long safe track record, that it is too dangerous to be used to cure the disease.

Among the drug's critics has been Fauci. In March, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases dismissed claims of HCQ's effectiveness as "anecdotal" and has periodically voiced that skepticism over the course of the pandemic.

On Tuesday during an interview on "Good Morning America," Fauci further downplayed the drug's purported benefit, claiming that "the overwhelming prevailing clinical trials that have looked at the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine have indicated that it is not effective in [treating] coronavirus disease."

Drug is 'the key to defeating COVID-19,' says infectious disease expert

Risch, however, is sharply criticizing Fauci's approach to evaluating the drug's effectiveness, arguing that repeated trials and tests have shown that it is markedly effective at treating COVID-19 so long as it is administered properly.

Risch, a professor of epidemiology and the director of Yale's Molecular Cancer Epidemiology Laboratory, has been pushing for the drug's use in the fight against the coronavirus for months. Last week in a Newsweek op-ed he called HCQ "the key to defeating COVID-19," claiming its use — particularly when administered with one of two antibiotics and the nutritional supplement zinc — has been "shown to be highly effective" in treating high-risk coronavirus patients.

On Tuesday, Risch went further, charging in an interview with Just the News that Fauci is perpetrating a "misinformation campaign" in his opposition to the drug.

Fauci "has been maintaining a studious position that only randomized controlled trial evidence has any value," Risch said, "and everything else he calls anecdotal."

Randomized controlled trials have been referred to as "the gold standard" of clinical research experiments; Fauci last month lamented the "paucity" of such trials regarding COVID-19 cures. But Risch said numerous other types of studies have significant practical value in determining effective courses of medical treatment.

I read a book however many years ago called Good Calories, Bad Calories by Dr. Gary Taubes and he went into deep detail about the formation of the shipping routes / refined sugar shipping and their effect on port areas. Most were for rhinitis but significant numbers of people developed lung disease, skin disease and asthma. COVID-19 survivors treated with hydroxychloroquine give both warnings, praise for the drug

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Doctors at Baptist Medical Center said after reviewing studies of hydroxychloroquine, the science regarding the drug's effectiveness has changed since the start of the pandemic. Doctors said due to this, they don't support using it to treat COVID-19 patients outside of potential clinical trials.

 

Doctors at Baptist have used hydroxychloroquine in the past to treat COVID-19 patients like Carl Schuck and Tommy Shapard. Schuck, a lung cancer survivor, was on a ventilator for 15 days and didn't know if he'd survive. He was released on Good Friday in April.

 

"It has been nothing short of amazing," he said. "It has been a very smooth, steady improvement."

 

Three months after his release, Carl Schuck said he feels great. He and his wife credit hydroxychloroquine, combined with zinc and azithromycin for saving his life. He was on the combination of drugs for seven to eight days, they said.

 

"I'm here today thanks to it," Carl Schuck said.

 

"He's living proof," his wife, Laura Schuck, said. "Obviously, we are not medical doctors and don't profess to be. We are just the result of some good medicine."

 

 

"That cocktail definitely saved my life and prevented me from going on the ventilator," Shapard said.

 

Shapard didn't think he was going to survive COVID-19 either. He even recorded videos of himself saying goodbye to his family and sent them to his wife and three kids. He was on a mixture of drugs, including hydroxychloroquine, for five days.

 

"Was it the hydroxychloroquine? Was it all of the drugs combined?" Shapard said.

 

He had a warning, however, about hydroxychloroquine.

 

"There aren't cookie-cutter symptoms, and right now, it doesn't look like a cookie-cutter treatment," he said. "I think the most important message to remember again is there is no silver bullet. There's no cure, one cure-all drug."

 

It's a message Dr. Elizabeth Ransom of Baptist Health echoed.

 

"I'm so grateful that they’re doing better and that they had great outcomes and that’s the best news of all, but underneath all of that, we have to look at the science," she said. "It’s hard to take what happens in one case or an anecdote and translate that into a broader population."

If you want to make quinine with cinchona bark, the powder is hard to filter. The shredded bark is easier to work with. Also, you need citric acid to complete the extraction. Lemon, lime or orange peels/wedges will provide it, if you don't want to purchase it as a powdered ingredient.

Q tells us the island was for "blackmail". We have heard rumors all along about the videos which they can use for "blackmail" against their puppets.

 

But what kind of blackmail is that? I mean, what are they going to do with those videos of movie stars and world leaders raping and sacrificing kids? What does that do to their entire operation? So, what Hillary goes off the rails, and they release a horrifying video on her to ruin her career? Send her to jail? And then what if Oprah goes off the rails? And then Kevin Spacey goes off the rails? How many times can they release videos of them raping kids before the blackmail is useless? I argue they can't even release one of these videos even one time before they do more damage to themselves than to the puppet they're trying to control. So the blackmail has to be something more than that. What kind of blackmail is it then? Well… What do they really do on the island? Rituals? Sacrifices? Why? And how does THAT become blackmail.
