2 U.S. Citizens, One Pakistani National Charged with Moving U.S. Currency to Iran

 

A complaint was unsealed today, charging two U.S. citizens with federal crimes related to Iran. Muzzamil Zaidi, 36, a U.S. citizen who resides in Qom, Iran, was charged with acting in the United States as an agent of the government of Iran without first notifying the Attorney General. Zaidi, Asim Naqvi, 36, a U.S. citizen who lives in Houston, Texas, and Ali Chawla, 36, a Pakistani national who lives in Qom, Iran, were all charged with violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The complaint alleges that both charges stem from the defendants’ campaign to transport U.S. currency from the United States to Iran on behalf of the Supreme Leader of Iran in 2018 and 2019. Both Zaidi and Naqvi were arrested in Houston yesterday, Aug. 18, 2020.

 

β€œDisrupting Iran’s ability to raise U.S. dollars is key to combating its ability to sponsor international terrorism and destabilize the Middle East, including through its military presence in Yemen.” β€œZaidi, Naqvi, and Chawla allegedly raised money in the United States on behalf of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and illegally channeled these dollars to the government of Iran. As a result of today’s charges, their unlawful scheme has been exposed and brought to an end. The U.S. Department of Justice and its National Security Division are committed to holding accountable individuals who operate covert networks within the United States in order to provide support and funds to hostile foreign governments like Iran in violation of U.S. law.” ((Interesting language))

 

β€œThis case is significant as the defendants have considerable operational links to the IRGC, which has conducted multiple terrorist operations throughout the world over the past several years. The life-blood of these terrorist operations is cash – and the defendants played a key role in facilitating that critical component.”

 

β€œIn addition to being charged with acting as an illegal agent of Iran, Zaidi allegedly operated with his co-conspirators at the behest of the Iranian government β€” a known sponsor of terrorism β€” to overtly solicit U.S. money to further Iranian causes, in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This is why IEEPA was established: to prevent hostile foreign governments from leveraging the U.S. financial system in furtherance of their global destabilizing endeavors.”

 

β€œThe arrests today are the direct result of the undeterred efforts of the FBI Houston Counterterrorism investigative team,”. β€œBy engaging in around the clock collaboration with multiple Field Offices and Intelligence Community partners, our agents ensure that those who send money to terrorist regimes will ultimately be held accountable and lose their freedom.”

 

Zaidi offered his services to the Supreme Leader of Iran in or around July 2015 and said that he could serve the β€œIslamic Republic in the socio-political or another field.” The complaint alleges that Zaidi traveled to Syria in or around June 2018 and that, while there, flew to an active war zone in an armed Iranian military or intelligence aircraft. The complaint alleges that Zaidi had access to bases under the command of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while in that war zone, including a β€œSepah Qods” (IRGC Qods Force) base. The IRGC was designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S on April 4, 2019. Qassem Soleimani, a major general in the IRGC, was commander of the Qods Force until he was killed in a U.S. airstrike on Jan. 3, 2020. (((MOAR to this than meets the eye????)))

Zaidi and other members of an organization known as β€œIslamic Pulse,” including Chawla, received the permission of the Supreme Leader of Iran to collect khums, a religious tax, on the Supreme Leader’s behalf, and to end half of that money to Yemen. The complaint alleges that permission was formalized on or about Feb. 28, 2019, in a letter confirming the permission of the Supreme Leader of Iran and another Ayatollah to spend khums money in Yemen.

 

Based on the complaint, in or around July 2019, Islamic Pulse released a video soliciting donations for its purported Yemen campaign that showed money moving from the United States and other Western countries to Yemen through Iran. The complaint alleges that Chawla replied to donors’ concerns about how the campaign was able to get money into Yemen by stating that the matter could not be discussed over email. The complaint further alleges that Chawla sought U.S. dollars specifically, stated that Islamic Pulse could not accept electronic transfers, and admitted that Islamic Pulse was not a registered charity.

 

The complaint alleges that after the United States placed sanctions on the Supreme Leader of Iran in June 2019, Zaidi told Naqvi that the action was a β€œstraight hit on khums.” The complaint alleges that in summer and fall 2019 Zaidi and Naqvi continued to collect U.S. currency in the United States and have it transported it to Iran, sometimes via Iraq, structured in such a way as to avoid reporting requirements. After a group of 25 travelers carried money destined for Iran on behalf of Zaidi and Naqvi in October 2019, Zaidi and Naqvi discussed the screening the travelers underwent at the airport and Naqvi’s hope that none of the travelers would confess to authorities upon their return.

 

The complaint alleges that, during his current stay in the United States, which began in June 2020, Zaidi has exhibited behavior that is consistent with having received training from a foreign government or foreign intelligence service, such as the government of Iran or IRGC. According to the complaint, that behavior includes a reluctance to discuss matters over the phone, or even over encrypted applications, because Zaidi claims that doing so could be dangerous.

 

The maximum penalty for a violation of 18 U.S.C. Β§ 951 is 10 years, and the maximum penalty for a violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act is 20 years.

Description

The caverns are capable of hiding up to 20 nuclear submarines based on reconnaissance satellites data collected. The harbor houses nuclear ballistic missile submarines and is large enough to accommodate aircraft carriers. The US Department of Defense has estimated that China will have five Type 094 nuclear submarines operational by 2010 with each capable of carrying 12 JL-2 intercontinental ballistic missiles. Two 950 metre piers and three smaller ones would be enough to accommodate two carrier strike groups or amphibious assault ships.

 

Location

The submarine base is located at the point in Chinese territory that is closest to the continental shelf. It is roughly 50 nautical miles (93 km) from the base to the 200 meter isobath. It is 150 nautical miles (280 km) to the closest of the disputed Paracel Islands or the city of Da Nang, Vietnam. Speculation has been raised that the base is intended to be expanded to include future capability for aircraft carrier groups.[5]

 

The submarine base is only a few miles from the city of Sanya, a popular tourist destination and the site of a major planned cruise hub.[6] The base is immediately next to the Yalong Bay National Resort District featuring many resort hotels.[7][8].

 

Strategic importance

More than half of the world's annual merchant fleet tonnage passes through the Strait of Malacca, Sunda Strait, and Lombok Strait, with the majority continuing on into the South China Sea. China's massive Yulin Naval Base on Hainan Island is one of the greatest strategic interests in the region. It is home to China's nuclear ballistic missile submarine fleetβ€”the backbone of its second-strike deterrentβ€”as well as other submarines. It sits at the northern edge of the highly contentious South China Sea. To its east is the gateway to the open Pacific and Taiwan. The most intriguing feature of this facility is the mysterious submarine cave built into the side of a mountain that dominates the southern end of the installation. Although I have seen satellite images of the roadway barges removed from the opening, we have never seen one with a submarine actually using it, until now.

 

You can read all about Yulin Naval Base, its submarine cave, and the very high level of strategic interest the U.S. and allied regional players put on it in this past article of ours.

 

The image was taken by Planet Labs, but first appeared on Radio Free Asia's social media channels. We were alerted to it via a post from @DRM_Long. Interestingly enough, not one other submarine is visible in the satellite image. The docks are completely empty. This also seems exceedingly rare based on our monitoring experience.

 

It isn't clear exactly what type of submarine is seen in the image, but our best guess would be a Shang class/Type 093 nuclear attack submarine. The type seen is really beside the point, what's important is that we finally get to see this James Bond-esque feature in action.

 

As for where all the other submarines are, we have no clue. Tensions are exceedingly high in the region and the U.S. has massively upped its presence there. Meanwhile, Taiwan has gone on elevated alert as China executes war games nearby. While some of those drills could and likely do involve submarines based at Yalin, it's also possible that others have moved inside the mountain, as well. Why exactly remains unclear.

Well, defunding the police is not a bad thing when I really think about it. Defund (to me) doesn't mean burn their buildings down and get rid of them… to me it means let's not turn them into (fund) a standing army that carries military gear and uses military tactics. A day after President Barack Obama excoriated Trump and told the Democratic National Convention the nation’s democracy is at stake in this election, Trump said the country’s survival is at stake.

 

β€œIt’s true, because we’re dealing with crazy people on the other side,” he said. β€œThey’ve gone totally stone-cold crazy.”

Trump routinely mispronounced Democratic vice president nominee Kamala Harris’ first name and said he watched her acceptance speech Wednesday night.

 

β€œI watched Kamala last night and I said, I’ll take Mike,” he said, referring to Vice President Mike Pence.

 

Trump, who has raised doubts about Biden’s mental competence, also referred to former heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes of Easton as β€œErnie Holmes.”

RFK, Jr announced a lawsuit against Merck for a Gardasil injury yesterday. The opportunity to sue a pharmaceutical company was pretty much eliminated by the 1986 Act removing liability from pharmaceutical companies for vaccine injuries (making it legal and desirable to intentionally cause chronic disease via vaccination). However, it is still possible to sue, apparently, for FRAUD. I hope anyone vaccinated with Gardasil will get assistance for the probably inevitable (except by miracles of God) lifetime health consequences.

 

It is pretty easy to control and even traffic people who are too debilitated to protect themselves. Vaccination (and fluoridation) drop IQs and lead to a population that is chronically ill and dependent. Virtually all chronic conditions for which we pay thousands and millions of dollars to care for, especially using exorbitant patented pharmaceutical drugs, are knowingly caused by vaccination. I'm thinking Humira and all auto-immune drugs, asthma treatments (especially epipens) and allergy drugs and treatments. Not to mention Vyvance and ADHD meds, too. The murder took place in Florida… which has the death penalty, which he was sentenced to. Being a career criminal, this upset him so much that he tried to commit suicide, but failed. Due to his failure, he was taken off death row and sent to a mental hospital until he died of old age. So, the creep was killed but my uncle was stripped of his freedom. Anyways, it was an all around sad situation. Don't get emotional around pedos, just collect evidence, give it to those who want it, and let the criminal justice system work. We aren't savages.
