Former head of Aussie military insists top brass responsible for alleged Afghan war crimes after report absolves them

Australia’s military leadership is responsible for any crimes committed by its troops in Afghanistan, the ex-chief of the country’s armed forces has said, after a report into alleged atrocities cleared it of wrongdoing.

Admiral Chris Barrie, who led the Australian Defence Force from 1998 to 2002, called for a royal commission to investigate allegations that Australian special forces in Afghanistan carried out unlawful killings, and insisted that responsibility for such crimes ultimately rests with the country’s military command.

A four-year investigation, led by Major General Paul Brereton, found evidence that Australian troops committed dozens of murders in Afghanistan. However, the report determined that responsibility for the alleged crimes “does not extend to higher headquarters.”

In comments to the Sydney Morning Herald, Barrie said he doesn’t “accept” the report’s conclusion, noting that command structures exist to ensure that such atrocities never occur.

The purpose of having national command responsibilities in the theatre [of operations] is to make sure that our people are behaving themselves and doing what is right and proper according to the Australian government’s direction.

The retired admiral also expressed support for a probe into the report’s preliminary findings, arguing that “mums and dad of Australia need to know what was going on [in Afghanistan] and what needs to be done about it.” He said that current Defence Force Chief General Angus Campbell shouldn’t be expected to pursue the allegations detailed in Brereton’s report.

“[Campbell’s] job is running the defence force today – not to sweep up the mess of 12 years ago,” Barrie told the paper.

Critics have accused Campbell of shielding senior officers from responsibility for the purported crimes while using aggressive measures to scapegoat low-ranking service members for the scandal.

His comments coincided with the release of a paper penned by the Australia Institute, a progressive public policy think tank, which argued for a royal commission to investigate the alleged crimes. The analysis also argues that not holding top brass responsible for such matters “overturns a long tradition of command responsibility for the deeds and misdeed of troops.”

Barrie has been vocal about his outrage over the alleged war crimes, saying the purported atrocities “tarnished” Australia’s reputation and the country’s military will have to “do a lot of work” to recover its standing. Last month, he called for the Australian War Memorial Council to be disbanded, due to concerns its members were too close to special-forces soldiers suspected of carrying out the alleged killings in Afghanistan.

The Australian government has apologized to Kabul for the “misconduct” detailed by Brereton. The alleged abuses have received international attention, as well as condemnation from foreign governments. Canberra demanded an apology from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, after one of its spokespersons called for “justice,” and included a doctored photograph of an Australian soldier holding a knife to an Afghan girl’s neck.

US Moves Against China and Supporters of the Illegitimate Maduro Regime’s Fraudulent Elections

The US took actions on Friday against Venezuela and China for their actions which undermine free and fair elections and undermine the America’s national security.

In a press statement from the State Department action was taken against those who helped the Maduro regime steal the recent December election in Venezuela:

In another press statement, the US Department of State put more sanctions on Peoples Republic of China (PRC) actors for their malign activities. The State Department and other departments placed a number of companies on notice:

The Chinese Communist Party’s malign activity at home and abroad harms U.S. interests and undermines the sovereignty of our allies and partners. The United States will use all countermeasures available, including actions to prevent People’s Republic of China (PRC) companies and institutions from exploiting U.S. goods and technologies for malign purposes. Today’s actions mark yet another sign of our resolve.

The United States is imposing new restrictions on certain entities for activities that undermine our national security and foreign policy interests.

Investing.com announced that the President also signed legislation that would kick Chinese companies off of US stock exchanges:

Official review shows MI6 agents engaged in 'serious criminality' abroad, as tribunal reveals agency is also free to break UK law

While debate rages over controversial spying legislation in the UK, other disclosures indicate British spooks have long been secretly free to commit crimes with impunity anyway.

There has rightly been intense controversy over the Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) bill in recent months.

The legislation would enshrine in law the ability of undercover operatives – both employees of British state agencies and their informants – to not only commit extremely serious crimes, up to and including rape, torture and murder, but also insulate them from criminal prosecution and civil actions for doing so.

However, for all their at times fiery condemnation, few if any mainstream critics acknowledged that the UK intelligence services have been allowed to commit crimes with impunity for some time.

Since the early 1990s, a once-secret policy dubbed ‘third direction’ has permitted MI5 to participate in crime to “secure or maintain access to intelligence that can be used to save life or disrupt more serious criminality, or ensure the agent’s continued safety, security and ability to pass such intelligence.”

It also grants MI5 authority to make representations to the police or Crown Prosecution Service advising against the prosecution of agents for criminal activity on ‘public interest’ grounds.

Moreover, Section 7 of the Intelligence Services Act 1994 – nicknamed the ‘James Bond clause’ – provides legal amnesty for MI6 operatives to commit abroad what would be crimes at home, as long as these activities have been authorised by the Foreign Secretary.

In essence then, all the CHIS bill will do is amend the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 to codify in statute existing informal powers, while officially extending them beyond MI5, MI6, GCHQ and Special Branch to, among others, the Competition and Markets Authority, Food Standards Agency and Department of Health and Social Care.

The legislation is currently under consideration by the House of Lords, where it has received a less than welcome reception in several quarters. Among others, former Labour MP Peter Hain, himself surveilled by the state over three decades, gave an incendiary speech, noting many instances in which British spies “were on the wrong side of justice, the law and history.”

FDA now investigating after multiple allergic reactions to Pfizer COVID vaccine reported across US

A top FDA official says the 'culprit' behind the reaction may have been identified

The Food and Drug Administration said on Friday they are investigating after multiple allergic reactions were reported in people who had just received Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine.

The new development comes just days after the Pfizer vaccine began to be administered nationwide.

What did the FDA say?

Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said at a press conference that five allergic reactions occurred this week in more than one state.

The reactions were reportedly similar to those seen in the United Kingdom last week.

"We are working hand in hand with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and we've actually been working closely with our United Kingdom colleagues, who of course reported the allergic reaction. I think we'll be looking at all the data we can from each of these reactions to sort out exactly what happened, and we'll also be looking to try to understand which component of the vaccine might be helping to produce them," Marks said, the Hill reported.

Marks explained that scientists were not certain what caused the allergic reactions, but pointed to polyethylene glycol as the possible "culprit." The ingredient is present in both the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccine.

At least two of the reactions happened at the same hospital in Juneau, Alaska.

As the New York Times reported, the reactions happened within minutes of vaccine administration:

[The first worker] experienced a rash over her face and torso, shortness of breath and an elevated heart rate. Dr. Lindy Jones, the hospital's emergency department medical director, said the worker was first given a shot of epinephrine, a standard treatment for severe allergic reactions. Her symptoms subsided but then re-emerged, and she was treated with steroids and an epinephrine drip. When doctors tried to stop the drip, her symptoms re-emerged yet again, so the woman was moved to the intensive care unit, observed throughout the night, then weaned off the drip early Wednesday morning, Dr. Jones said.

The second worker received his shot on Wednesday and developed eye puffiness, lightheadedness and a scratchy throat 10 minutes after the injection, the hospital said in a statement. He was taken to the emergency room and treated with epinephrine, Pepcid and Benadryl, although the hospital said the reaction was not considered anaphylaxis. The worker was back to normal within an hour and released.

Still, the FDA said the vaccine is safe for most Americans who have allergies, Reuters reported.

The agency only warned those Americans who have a history of severe allergic reactions, or a history of allergic reactions to ingredients present in either vaccine, from immediately receiving the vaccine.

I put my son through gay conversion therapy. It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life | Opinion

It has been two years since the release of “Boy Erased,” an award-winning film based on my son Garrard Conley’s memoir about surviving conversion therapy. Like other conversion-therapy survivors, Garrard will bear the trauma of that ordeal for the rest of his life.

My husband and I pressured Garrard to change his sexual orientation. At the time, we didn’t know about the scientific consensus that no therapy can change a child from gay to straight. Knowing now what I did not know then — that many young people who experience conversion therapy do not survive it — I am grateful every day that my son is alive. No decision I have ever made will haunt me more, which is why I am encouraged that officials in Palm Beach County and Boca Raton, joined by Miami and dozens of other localities across the country, are asking a federal court of appeals to reverse an unprecedented decision upholding this deadly practice.

Last month, in a split federal decision, two out of three judges — both appointed by President Trump — held that laws protecting minors from conversion therapy violate the free-speech rights of therapists. One judge strongly disagreed. As she pointed out, there is a “mountain of rigorous evidence” that conversion therapy puts minors at risk of serious harm, including suicide, and governments have a responsibility to protect children from such harm.

Shockingly, the two other judges ignored this evidence. But our society — and parents, in particular — must not. Research has found that LGBTQ minors who experience conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide as those who have not, including a recent study finding that such youth often experience several suicide attempts.

According to Born Perfect, a nationwide campaign to end conversion therapy, 20 states and more than 85 localities have taken action to protect young people and their families from this practice. Many were signed into law by Republican governors, and nearly all passed with bipartisan support. At a recent hearing in Kentucky, a conservative Baptist minister testified that no matter what one’s religious beliefs, no child should be subjected to this coercive and harmful “treatment,” which has no scientific validity.

Last month’s decision was a travesty, and I pray that it will be corrected. So far, every other federal court to hear a challenge has upheld these laws. But no matter what happens in the courts, those of us with firsthand experience of how conversion therapy breaks children and destroys families must speak out.

I am extremely proud of Garrard for sharing his story. Because of him, many other parents will not make the same mistake. But nothing can erase the pain of knowing that my husband and I caused harm to the person we love more than anyone on this Earth: our own child. That is a pain I would not wish on anyone, and that is why I am committed to doing all I can to ensure that every LGBTQ young person knows that they are born perfect.

UK PM Boris Johnson effectively cancelled Christmas for those in London and Southeast England on Saturday, banning Brits from meeting family members and friends from other households, due to the fast-spreading new Covid-19 strain.

What a shocker…

While debate rages over controversial spying legislation in the UK, other disclosures indicate British spooks have long been secretly free to commit crimes with impunity anyway.

There has rightly been intense controversy over the Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) bill in recent months.

The legislation would enshrine in law the ability of undercover operatives – both employees of British state agencies and their informants – to not only commit extremely serious crimes, up to and including rape, torture and murder, but also insulate them from criminal prosecution and civil actions for doing so.

However, for all their at times fiery condemnation, few if any mainstream critics acknowledged that the UK intelligence services have been allowed to commit crimes with impunity for some time.

Since the early 1990s, a once-secret policy dubbed ‘third direction’ has permitted MI5 to participate in crime to “secure or maintain access to intelligence that can be used to save life or disrupt more serious criminality, or ensure the agent’s continued safety, security and ability to pass such intelligence.”

It also grants MI5 authority to make representations to the police or Crown Prosecution Service advising against the prosecution of agents for criminal activity on ‘public interest’ grounds.

Moreover, Section 7 of the Intelligence Services Act 1994 – nicknamed the ‘James Bond clause’ – provides legal amnesty for MI6 operatives to commit abroad what would be crimes at home, as long as these activities have been authorised by the Foreign Secretary.

In essence then, all the CHIS bill will do is amend the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 to codify in statute existing informal powers, while officially extending them beyond MI5, MI6, GCHQ and Special Branch to, among others, the Competition and Markets Authority, Food Standards Agency and Department of Health and Social Care.

The legislation is currently under consideration by the House of Lords, where it has received a less than welcome reception in several quarters. Among others, former Labour MP Peter Hain, himself surveilled by the state over three decades, gave an incendiary speech, noting many instances in which British spies “were on the wrong side of justice, the law and history.”…

Director James Gunn Throws Tantrum After Pence Announces Space Force Personnel Will Be Called ‘Guardians’: ‘Can We Sue This Dork?’

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn asked on Friday if he could sue the “dork” Vice President Mike Pence following the announcement that uniformed members of the U.S. Space Force will be called “Guardians.”

“Can we sue this dork?” the Hollywood director asked his 783,000 Twitter followers on Friday following the vice president’s announcement, which drew viral reactions.

James Gunn, director of both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. has constantly attacked the president and his supporters. Disney fired Gunn — and later reinstated — over social media posts about pedophilia and jokes about the Holocaust and Mexicans.

Pence made the announcement on Friday in honor of the Space Force’s one year anniversary celebration.

“It is my honor, on behalf of the President of the United States, to announce that, henceforth, the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as ‘Guardians,'” he said. “Soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Guardians will be defending our nation for generations to come.”

Pence added that the Space Force is “growing stronger every day and just in the nick of time.”

“I think every one of the military leaders here knows that space is a vacuum, but we’re not operating in a vacuum. The space race began in the 1950s, and it continues today,” he continued. “And in President Donald Trump, we have a Commander-in-Chief who has understood clearly that space is a warfighting domain and it’s imperative that we invest the resources and the personnel and the technology to defend our nation and defend our values in the outer reaches of space.”

The United States Space Force’s official Twitter account also made the announcement.

“Today, after a yearlong process that produced hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and members of the general public, we can finally share with you the name by which we will be known: Guardians,” it revealed.

This is far from the first time Gunn has lobbed an attack at the Trump administration or the president. In 2018, The Suicide Squad director said Trump secretly wanted Americans to be murdered by illegal aliens to boost his support in the polls. The remarks came after Trump held an event with Angel Families.

“This tone deaf oaf actually autographed photographs of murdered children,” Gunn wrote. “I don’t know why I’m so surprised he autographed those photos. You KNOW Trump wakes up every morning hoping more kids are murdered by immigrants so it will help him in the polls.”

'Come get me if I'm wrong': Proud Boys leader, wanted by FBI over possible HATE CRIME, admits to burning BLM sign, denies guilt

The leader of the Proud Boys has confessed to torching a Black Lives Matter banner at a Washington, DC church last weekend after the FBI opened a “hate crime” probe into the incident, but maintains he did nothing illegal.

The chairman of the controversial group, Enrique Tarrio, admitted to the stunt in a post to Parler early on Friday morning, saying that while he did burn the BLM banner during a political rally last week, “there was no hate crime committed.”

“Against the wishes of my attorney I am here today to admit that I am the person responsible for the burning of this sign,” Tarrio wrote, adding “I didn’t do it out of hate…I did it out of love,” and that the sign-burning “wasn’t about race, religion or political ideology,” but rather “a racist movement that has terrorized the citizens of this country.”

The mea culpa came after both local police and the FBI launched a hate crime investigation into the episode, offering $1,000 and $2,000 rewards, respectively, for information leading to an arrest, according to the Associated Press. In addition to the destroyed BLM banner, authorities also alleged damage was done to local churches.

The incident took place during a rally in the nation’s capital last weekend in support of President Donald Trump. Footage of the sign-burning captured by RT’s video agency, Ruptly, showed one man dousing the banner with fuel to chants of “f**k Antifa!” and “USA!” from a rowdy crowd. A second BLM banner was also apparently pulled off another church and torched, though it’s unclear whether Torrio’s admission referred to both incidents.

National File confirmed on December 17 that Dominion Voting Systems does in fact use SolarWinds products.

Multiple sources have confirmed Dominion Voting Systems utilizes products from SolarWinds, a recently hacked software company that provides IT service management to businesses, the executive branch, intelligence services, and the US military. Dominion denies using SolarWinds products included in the hack.

SolarWinds was hacked in March by who the ODNI, FBI, and CISA refer to as “malicious actors.” The breach of the SolarWinds’ Orion platform was announced this month, just six days before SolarWinds investors sold hundreds of millions of dollars in stock.

The Daily Dot claims that a Dominion Voting Systems spokesperson said “Dominion Voting Systems does not now — nor has it ever — used the SolarWinds Orion Platform, which was subject of the DHS emergency directive dated December 12, 2020.”

SolarWinds ties to China are beginning to make their way into public view amid the announcement of the cyber breach that reportedly struck the company in March. SolarWinds board director Kenneth Hao “led the establishment” of a $75 billion investment firm into China, as National File reported.

According to his biography on the Silver Lake website, Kenneth Hao “led the establishment of the firm’s offices in China and Japan and led Silver Lake’s investments in Alibaba Group” from 2008-2011.

Silver Lake also notes that “Hao currently serves as a director on the boards” of several companies, including SolarWinds.

Four universities, led by @utaustin, seek to create a new paradigm in sensing for hypersonic vehicles

NASA and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research are backing a team of four universities, led by The University of Texas at Austin, in a project to re-define sensing and analysis of hypersonic vehicles, which can travel at least five times the speed of sound and potentially revolutionize space and air travel.

The project is part of NASA's University Leadership Initiative, and the team's goal is to create a new paradigm in sensing for hypersonic vehicles, which could also be applied to lower-speed craft. The project — Full Airframe Sensing Technology (FAST) — will treat the vehicles themselves as sensors, analyzing aerodynamic changes during flight tests, and use that information to infer where force is being applied so they can better protect and control the vehicles.

"We are taking conventional sensors and distributing them across the vehicle, allowing them to make measurements they weren't meant to make," said Noel Clemens, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and leader of the project. "By getting information from all the sensors simultaneously, we will be able to analyze the shape of the vehicle and infer the distribution of forces acting on the vehicle."

GOP Rep. Kinzinger: Cyberattack Approaching ‘Actual, Direct Act of War by the Russians’

On Friday’s broadcast of Fox News Radio’s “Guy Benson Show,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) stated that he believes the cyberattack on the federal government will make the OPM hack “pale in comparison” and “is the biggest story of the year, probably, besides coronavirus.”

Kinzinger said, “So, this is the biggest story of the year, probably, besides coronavirus. We don’t know the depths of what’s happened. What we do know is we think these hacks started in March, maybe even before. We had no idea. … So, this makes the OPM hack that took anybody that had a security clearance’s information, this makes the terrible damage that Edward Snowden did to our national defense and our nation, and I think it’s going to pale in comparison to this. I — there’s a lot we need to know, but this is starting to approach an actual, direct act of war by the Russians.”

He added, “This is going to warrant, probably, one of the stronger, if not the strongest responses we’ve ever had to the Russians. And frankly, if we cannot have a proportional response with just the cyber realm, there may be a place for kinetic action against, for instance, Russian proxies or Russian infrastructure.”

Kinzinger concluded that without a strong response, more cyberattacks from hostile powers will happen.

IMF unlocks $1.67 billion tranche to Egypt as public debt & Covid-19 jeopardize economy

The executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has allowed the Egyptian authorities to draw $1.67 billion under a 12-month standby arrangement.

The move, which comes as result of a review of Egypt’s reform program, has brought the country’s total disbursement under the aid deal to $3.6 billion, according to a statement by the Washington-based fund.

Earlier this year, the IMF approved a $5.2 billion package for Egypt. The Arab republic will reportedly receive the remaining $1.6 billion after a series of economic reviews.

The Egyptian economy remains vulnerable to volatility in global financial conditions, according to Antoinette Monsio Sayeh, the IMF’s deputy managing director, who says that the nation’s high level of public debt and gross financing needs still pose a threat to its economic recovery.

“The Egyptian authorities have managed well the Covid-19 pandemic and the related disruption to economic activity,” Sayeh said.

“[But] there are still risks to the outlook, particularly as a second wave of the pandemic increases uncertainty about the pace of the domestic and global recovery.”
