Over $100K Of China-Made Counterfeit Currency Seized In Chicago

 

Customs and Border Protection officials seized over $100,000 in Chinese-made counterfeit currency destined for the U.S.

 

On January 28th, officers at Chicago’s International Mail Facility (IMF) uncovered various shipments of counterfeit bills.”

 

β€œThe first shipment contained 957 counterfeit $100 dollar bills and 44 counterfeit $50 dollar bills totaling $97,900. In the second shipment were 384 counterfeit $100 dollar bills,” the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) notes.

 

In total, β€œ$136,300 of counterfeit currency was seized under Counterfeit U.S. Currency, Coins or Government Securities.”

 

The shipments were destined for Auburn Hills, Michigan and Independence, Missouri.

FDA Fails to Demand Needed Tests, Its Approval Not Based on β€œConvincing Evidence” as Required by Law

 

(Washington, D.C.) β€” Yesterday, Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a legal brief in its challenge to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 2019 approval of soy leghemoglobin (β€œheme”), a color additive used to make Impossible Foods’ eponymous plant-based burger, the Impossible Burger, appear to β€œbleed” like real meat.

 

The novel heme colorant is produced in genetically engineered (GE) yeast, and is modeled on a protein found in the roots of soybean. The GE heme is actually a color additive preparation that also contains over a dozen yeast proteins. Because GE heme is new to the human diet, and substantial quantities are added to the Impossible Burger, FDA should have required extensive safety testing before approving its use as a color additive, as required by law.

 

β€œFDA approved soy leghemoglobin even though it conducted none of the long-term animal studies that are needed to determine whether or not it harms human health,” said Bill Freese, science policy analyst at Center for Food Safety. β€œThis includes studies for cancer, reproductive impairment, and other adverse effects called for by FDA’s Redbook, the Bible of food and color additive testing,” he added. β€œWe find this to be all the more troubling because a number of potential adverse effects were detected in a short-term rat trial: disruption of reproductive cycles and reduced uterine weights in females, and biomarkers of anemia, reduced clotting ability, and kidney problems.”

 

The law on color additives is clear: Because they offer no substantive benefits, and add only aesthetic appeal, Congress and FDA established an extremely high bar for approval. The agency’s β€œconvincing evidence” standard means that a color additive cannot be approved without the strongest possible evidence of safety, a higher bar than for other food additives. Despite the lack of needed safety tests, Impossible Foods’ products containing GE heme are now widely available in supermarkets across the country due to FDA’s unlawful approval of GE heme as a color additive.

 

β€œFDA’s failure to require Impossible Foods to conduct long-term tests called for in the agency’s own authoritative guidelines means it does not have β€˜convincing evidence’ that this color additive, consumed by millions, is safe,” said Ryan Talbott, staff attorney at Center for Food Safety. β€œThe approval of soy leghemoglobin must be revoked, unless and until truly convincing evidence proves it to be safe.”

 

While CFS like many others avidly supports plant-based eating, enthusiasm for meatless products cannot be used as an excuse to skirt food safety laws. FDA’s dereliction of duty has resulted in the premature introduction of Impossible Foods’ products containing GE heme to restaurants and supermarkets throughout the country, and highlights a troubling deregulatory trend which prioritizes corporate profit over public health and safety.

Burma’s Nuclear Dream Still Alive?

North Korea tried to ship materials suitable for uranium enrichment or missile development to Myanmar via China last year, in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution, The Asahi Shimbun has learned.

 

The shipment included about 50 metal pipes and 15 high-specification aluminium alloy bars, at least some of them offering the high strength needed in centrifuges for a nuclear weapons program. Japan seized the items aboard a cargo vessel docked at Tokyo Port on Aug. 22, a raid which took place at the request of the United States, sources told The Asahi Shimbun.

 

Authorities concluded that the shipment originated in North Korea because the bars were found to be inscribed "DPRK," although investigators were unable to confirm the origin from cargo documents or from the ship's crew, the sources said.

Japan, the United States and South Korea believe Myanmar has abandoned its one-time nuclear weapons ambitions. This makes officials suspect that the aluminium alloy may have been intended for use in building missiles instead. A South Korean government source said Myanmar may have been trying to develop short-range missiles in the event of border disputes with its neighbors.

 

The United States is among nations now easing sanctions against Myanmar and supporting its move toward democracy. On Nov. 19, Barack Obama, the first serving U.S. president to visit Myanmar, met with President Thein Sein in Yangon and requested that he sever military ties with North Korea.

 

The revelation of apparent continued links could hamper international reconciliation. And Pyongyang has complained of U.S. pressure on Myanmar to end relations. It will also likely cause international criticism of Myanmar and China, which have both denied violating the U.N. ban on North Korean exports of weapons and related materials.

 

The cargo was to have been delivered to Soe Min Htike, a Yangon-based construction company, which the U.S. government believes is a front for Myanmar's military procurement. In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun, a company based in Dalian, China, confirmed that it had tried to send aluminium alloy to Myanmar.

 

"We became the cargo's owner at the request of a company," an official said. "We have learned that the cargo was seized, but we do not know why." Japanese government officials believe North Korea acquired the aluminium alloy from China. They said North Korea is unlikely to possess the technology needed to produce such material.

 

At a meeting held to discuss the matter, Japanese officials from several government agencies agreed that the Chinese militaryβ€”which ultimately controls its defense industryβ€”must have approved North Korea's exporting the materials to Myanmar.

House Democrats Seek to Include Amnesty for Illegal Aliens in Coronavirus Relief Package

 

About 100 House Democrats are urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to include an amnesty for certain subgroups of illegal aliens in a relief package for Americans impacted by the Chinese coronavirus crisis.

 

The group of House Democrats, led by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, want to include an amnesty for at least five million illegal aliens who consider themselves β€œessential workers” and who are recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. The letter states:

 

As you continue to work on assembling a COVID-19 reconciliation package and begin work on an economic recovery and jobs package, we urge you to include a pathway to citizenship for essential immigrant workers, Dreamers, and TPS holders, as well as their families, in order to ensure a robust recovery that is inclusive and equitable for all Americans regardless of their immigration status.

 

The amnesty would pack the United States labor market with millions of newly legalized illegal aliens who would be allowed to legally compete for jobs against 18 million unemployed Americans and another 6.2 million Americans who are underemployed.

 

Eventually, those legalized by the amnesty would be put on a path to obtaining American citizenship. The House Democrats claim the amnesty would boost U.S. wages, though a tightened labor market with reduced foreign competition against Americans has proven to spike salaries.

 

β€œA pathway to citizenship for undocumented essential workers would raise the wage floor and in turn benefit all workers, beyond direct beneficiaries,” the House Democrats write.

 

The proposal comes as President Joe Biden’s administration has put forth an amnesty plan that would allow nearly the entire illegal alien population β€” between 11 and 22 million foreign nationals β€” to eventually obtain American citizenship.

 

Thus far, 28 of the most vulnerable House Democrats have stayed silent on whether they would support such a proposal at a time of mass unemployment.

 

Every year more than 1.2 million legal immigrants are awarded green cards, another 1.4 million foreign nationals are given visas, and hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens are added to the U.S. population. Wall Street, the big business lobby, and Big Tech have lobbied for years for an amnesty and an increase in legal immigration levels to boost their profit margins by cutting labor costs through U.S. job outsourcing.

Planned Route of the Illicit Cargo Ship

 

The sources said the cargo was loaded onto the 17,138-ton Wan Hai 215, a Singapore-registered cargo vessel operated by a Taiwanese shipping company, in Dalian on July 27. On Aug. 9, the cargo was offloaded and placed aboard the 27,800-ton Wan Hai 313 in Shekou, China. On Aug. 14, the cargo was scheduled to change ships once again in Malaysia and to reach Yangon Port the following day.

 

The United States learned about the cargo's possible contents and asked the Taiwanese shipping company not to carry out the transshipment in Malaysia. The Wan Hai 313 entered Tokyo Port on Aug. 22. Officers from Tokyo Customs, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and other agencies examined the cargo and found the items in question.

 

For the first time, Japan applied a special measures law that allows the government to inspect cargo on ships suspected of carrying weapons and related materials to and from North Korea. Meanwhile, the discovery could force Japan, the United States and South Korea to review their nuclear non-proliferation policy.

 

A Japanese government source said since North Korea has no apparent difficulty procuring the necessary aluminium alloy it now likely "has acquired a large number of centrifuges." In November 2010, North Korea showed centrifuges to U.S. experts at a nuclear facility at Yongbyon. Officials claimed there were 2,000 centrifuges, enough to produce 40 kilograms of highly enriched uranium in one year, if certain conditions are met. That amount is sufficient for one or two nuclear bombs.

 

The U.S. and South Korean intelligence agencies suspect that North Korea is operating additional underground uranium enrichment facilities elsewhere. "North Korea would never disclose all its cards," one South Korean government source said. "There must be other facilities."

It is difficult to monitor the activities of centrifuges with an intelligence satellite because the site needed is small compared with the large reactor needed to produce plutonium for bombs. North Korea and Myanmar have had military ties for years.

 

Sources quoted Shwe Mann, speaker of Myanmar's lower house, as recently telling Japanese government officials that North Korea has yet to deliver some weapons ordered by Myanmar in the past. But, the speaker insisted, Myanmar would pursue no new weapons purchases from North Korea.

 

Shwe Mann's remark effectively contradicts Myanmar's official stance that it has not had any military transactions since spring 2011. The United States and South Korea learned that Myanmar signed contracts to purchase military supplies from North Korea when Shwe Mann visited the country in November 2008 as joint chief of staff. Among facilities Shwe Mann inspected was a North Korean missile factory.

 

In January last year, a ship arrived at Yangon Port via China, carrying cargo that had been loaded in Nampho, North Korea, ordered by an organization affiliated with the Myanmar military. "The cargo was a primary machine tool for weapons manufacture," said a diplomatic source in Yangon. "Military ties between Myanmar and North Korea have not been cut off."

 

North Korean military engineers have been spotted in Myanmar, as well as officials from a company that procures personal funds for the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un. The U.S. and South Korean intelligence agencies have stationed personnel at airports and ports in Myanmar to monitor traffic, but North Koreans are apparently travelling by land through China, sources said.

 

Investigations by Japan and the United States have found that Myanmar hasβ€”at some pointβ€”imported from North Korea weapons that include mortars. Myanmar has also informally told the United States it built underground tunnels near Naypyidaw and elsewhere with technical assistance from the North Korean military.

 

Japan, the United States and South Korea have refrained from disclosing details about military ties between North Korea and Myanmar. "If we went public with that, we would thrust Myanmar closer to China and North Korea," said one Japanese government source.

 

Meanwhile, a Chinese government source criticized the approach of countries such as the United States toward Myanmar. "It does not contain only niceties, such as an evaluation of the pro-democracy movement," the source said. "This is a geopolitical confrontation between China and the United States."

Myanmar’s military chief says the country plans to use nuclear technology for medical, research and energy purposes but will not develop atomic weapons, a statement that came a month after the government said it would declare any nuclear material in the country.

We have relied on hydro-electric power for too long. But it needs lots and lots of water. Coal power generators also can be built only for a specific region where coal is plenty. And coal is limited resource and one day all the coals will be gone, used up.

 

Okay, how about natural gas? But the gas is our main foreign exchange earner. If we use it to produce electricity we can’t export it. Also gas is a limited natural resource and one day it also will be used up.

 

Nuclear power! We should have nuclear reactors, in my opinion of course. Just two reactors, one in Upper Burma and one in Lower, will be more than enough for our whole electricity need. That is only energy use. How about military use? Once we have nuclear reactors running in Burma our potential enemies will think more than twice before confronting us with their F16 fighter jets and brand new naval frigates again.

 

Once we go ahead with our nuclear program everybody will criticize us but living under candle lights is worse than being criticized or even sanctioned by the international community.”

"The visit clearly demonstrates that United States is stepping up its engagement policy," said Aung Thein, a prominent lawyer and a member of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party. "It is better to see Myanmar's political situation on the ground rather than watch from a distance, We welcome the visit."

 

The administration sees Clinton's visit as a sign of success for Obama's policy on Myanmar, which was outlined in 2009 and focused on punishments and incentives to get the country's former military rulers to improve dire human rights conditions. The U.S. imposed new sanctions on Myanmar but made clear it was open to better relations if the situation changed.

 

Now Myanmar's nominally civilian government, which took power in March, has declared its intention to liberalize the hard-line policies of the junta that preceded it. It has taken some fledgling steps, such as easing censorship, legalizing labor unions, suspending an unpopular, China-backed dam project and working with Suu Kyi.

 

"After years of darkness, we've seen flickers of progress in these last several weeks," Obama declared Friday.

 

Officials said Clinton would travel to Myanmar Dec. 1.

 

The move came as Obama deepened ties with Asia, appealing to nations large and small for help with the American security agenda. Nearing the end of a nine-day trip across the Pacific, Obama was trying to prod for some progress over the hotly contested South China Sea, one of the most vital shipping channels in the world.

 

It also came as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations decided that Myanmar would chair the regional bloc in 2014, a significant perch that Myanmar was forced to skip in 2006 because of intense criticism of its rights record.

 

A U.S. opening with Myanmar would also contribute to Obama's rebalancing goals, as Burma's military leaders for long had close ties to China.

 

Beijing has poured billions of dollars of investment into Myanmar to operate mines, extract timber and build oil and gas pipelines. China has also been a staunch supporter of the country's politically isolated government and is Myanmar's second-biggest trading partner after Thailand.

 

Senior administration officials, briefing reporters Friday, stressed that the new engagement with Myanmar was not about China. They said the Obama administration consulted with China about the move and said they expected China to be supportive. They argued that China in fact wants to see a stable Burma on its borders, so that it doesn't risk problems with refugees or other results of political instability.

 

Human rights groups welcomed Obama's announcement as an opportunity to compel further reforms.

The Travel Channel’s biggest ex-star’s show premiered on CNN this evening, and it’s the Tony that everyone loves, with a bigger budget.

 

Politics and current events of the Bourdain’s Parts Unknown is present for the start. With black and white videos, Obama, and β€ͺAung San Suu Kyi making an appearance before Bourdain’s usual tasting and descriptions of local food.

Bourdain soon meets up with Philippe Lajaunie, the owner of Brasserie Les Halles, where Bourdain was a chef before he hit it big with his book Kitchen Confidential and was able to step out of the kitchen. With his clean white shirts, cool demeanor, and instant understanding of everything around him, Lajaunie comes off as a French version of Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man in the World.

 

Lajunie takes Bourdain to a full-moon festival, where they sample the food. β€œJust like a New York street fair but with infinitely better food,” Bourdain says. But the real highlight of the street festival is the human-powered Ferris wheels throughout the city. β€œI don’t want to be implicated in the death of four underage carnies.”

 

Later Bourdain continues to Yangon’s 19th Street, which is the center of youth culture. He gets a meal with Side Effect, a band of Burmese punk rockers. They soon prove that terrible music can’t be held back by a half-century of political oppression as Bourdain and the Myanmar rockers agree that Creed is the worst band in the history of the world.

 

Staying within Myanmar’s tourist triangle, Bourdain and Lajunie board train for a 600 km for β€œkidney-softening” ride by rail to Bagan. The 10-hour ride takes over 19 hours.

 

Keeping to his infinitely cool demeanor, after the 19-hour train ride Lajunie’s shirt is perfectly pressed.

 

Bourdain takes a break from looking at the 3,000 or so temples built after a conversion to Theravada Buddhism, to discuss life outside of the tourist triangle: β€œSimply put: there is shit going on they do not want you to see.” He calls out the violence against ethnic groups (there are 135 within Myanmar) to say β€œAll along the edges they’re waging a war to hang on to the status quo.”

β€˜Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)’ Rapper Arrested For Murder

 

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. β€” Rapper Silento, famous for his 2015 hit song β€˜Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae),’ has been charged in the shooting death of his own cousin, Dekalb County police say.

 

On Monday, 23-year-old Silento, whose real name is Ricky Hawk, was arrested for the Murder of his cousin Frederick Rooks, 34.

 

On January 21, police began investigating the shooting after Rooks was found in the roadway on Deep Shoals Circle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Rooks died from his injuries.

 

Police later identified Hawk as the suspect after multiple RING doorbell cameras captured suspect vehicles fleeing the scene.

 

Investigators are still working to uncover the motive for the shooting. Hawk is in the DeKalb County Jail charged with Murder.

Seattle council approves ban on gas heating in new apartments, commercial buildings

 

Seattle City Council has approved a ban on natural gas space and water heating in new construction on apartments, hotels, and commercial buildings.

 

The council voted unanimously to approve the ban, which was passed in addition to a separate vote to bring the city into alignment with other Washington state building codes. The citywide ban on natural gas space heating will take effect for qualifying new buildings on June 1, 2021, with the gas water heating ban going into effect in 2022 to β€œallow time for the market to adapt.”

 

Councilmember Dan Strauss β€” who sponsored the bill β€” pointed to an 8.3% in carbon emissions from buildings in the city between 2016 and 2018 as one of the driving reasons for getting the bill passed. It’s estimated that the ban will reduce building emissions by β€œat least 12%” by 2050.

As all the people know already that we began the COVID vaccinations the other day. The first vaccinations were given to our healthcare personnel and volunteers who are providing healthcare services on the frontlines. We started programmes in every state and region. I also went to have a look. That was in Nay Pyi Taw. At the vaccination site in Nay Pyi Taw, our Union Minister for Health Dr Myint Htwe rolled up his sleeves and bravely accepted a jab. He said he felt no pain. Not only did he feel no pain, when I asked him just now he said he did not have any negative side effects. However, among the healthcare personnel who were vaccinated, about one third said that they had slight aches, chills, or some sort of fever about 12 hours after being vaccinated; but this is not in a serious way. Just for some time. After that, they were all right.

This is natural when you receive some sort of vaccination; for example, flu. When you receive a flu shot, you feel this sort of reactionβ€”some sort of aches and pain. You feel muscle pain, a slight chill, some slight tremors, and somewhat feverish. This is to be expected. Up to now, we have not seen any serious incidents. That is why we will proceed with this programme in a systematic way. I am always reminding you. I don’t know if you have become a little fed up with my reminders. However, the reason why I have to keep reminding is that this is just the first dose. There will be a second dose. We can say that you have attained protection only after the second dose. When we say a second dose, there are four weeks during the interval; that is 28 days. Those who were vaccinated on the 27th will get their second doses on the 24th next month, I think. That means after four weeks. We can assume that they are protected only after the second dose.

The manner in which we receive these vaccines depends on the countries which are providing us with these vaccines. We are also purchasing these vaccines. There are those who are donating vaccines also. However, we will get only when they give us. We will be receiving on a regular basis month by month. We will be vaccinating all our people. We have estimated that we will be able to provide vaccinations to the people. We have made preparations to do this. People who received the first dose of vaccination need to maintain vigilance. It would be such a huge waste of vaccines if they became infected with COVID-19 between the first and second doses, and the first dose would be in vain. It is important to note that the country had to bear huge expenditures. As the availability of vaccine is not easy, it is very valuable. We don’t want to see even a single dose of vaccine wasted. I want people to be fully aware of this fact. The vaccination programme will continue in prioritized order in some places with dense population and with stay-at-home order. I expect public participation in this process. People are working for the country and the security of the country. Our country will have security and achieve progress only if our people are healthy and wealthy. Therefore, now that we are going to get vaccinations, it is not only good for our health, but it will also be a great relief for us. Chinese Firm Shandong Xinchao Expands Its Foothold in Texas' Oil-Rich Permian Basin

 

On Sunday, China’s Shandong Xinchao announced its decision to shell out $420 million to purchase oil-producing acreage from Grenadier Energy in the Texas Permian Basin.

 

Or rather, Surge Energy of Houston made the announcement via PR Newswire.

 

HOUSTON, Jan. 31, 2021 /PRNewswire/ β€” Surge Energy US Holdings Company (β€œSurge Energy” or the β€œCompany”) announced in the US that it, through its subsidiary, has signed a purchase and sale agreement to acquire leasehold interest and producing wells from Grenadier Energy Partners II LLC (β€œGEP II”) in Howard County, TX (the β€œTransaction”). The aggregate purchase price of the Transaction is expected to be approximately $420 million USD.

 

Highlights of the acquired assets include:

 

Average production of approximately 9,000 Boepd (approximately 75% oil)

Approximately 18,010 net leasehold acres

Operated inventory of approximately 120 high-quality, economic future drilling locations

 

The Transaction is expected to close in late first quarter.

 

Read the entire release and you’ll not see the words β€œShandong Xinchao” in it. But Surge is that company’s creation and wholly owned subsidiary. That’s disclosed on Surge’s corporate website.

 

Surge Energy America was formed in early 2015 as a U.S. subsidiary of Chinese based Shandong Xinchao Energy Corporation Limited, a publicly traded company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, with a strategy to make a significant acquisition in the U.S. oil shale play and pursue a long term sustainable U.S. oil & gas company. Upon entering into an agreement to purchase its first asset, Hoople Field, in early 2015, the Surge Energy organization began in May 2015 to enable taking over operatorship. Hoople Field is a 5,000 acre established water flood asset in Crosby County, TX.

 

Bloomberg published a brief piece about the deal but left Surge’s name out of it.

 

Since its creation in 2015, Surge Energy has continued to grow its in the Permian Basin. Before the COVID pandemic destroyed demand, ravaged the oil industry, and sent several producers into bankruptcy β€” and before this deal with Grenadier β€” Surge was already one of the top oil producers in Texas. After the Grenadier deal Surge Energy, aka Shandong Xinchao, will control about 111,000 acres of oil-producing land in Texas.

 

As of December 2020, Surge Energy was producing about 63,386 barrels per day according to data from the Texas Railroad Commission, ranking it 18th in production overall. The added production from the Grenadier purchase may push its ranking to as high as 15th.

 

China was the world’s largest oil importer pre-pandemic, producing about 5 million barrels per day while importing 8 million to match its consumption of about 13 million barrels per day. The United States at that time was the world’s largest oil producer, pumping between 11 and 12 million barrels per day. About 41% of U.S. oil is produced in Texas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency. Joe Biden promised not to ban fracking when he was running for president, but after inauguration he issued an executive order that effectively bans fracking on federal lands by halting leasing and permitting. His order will have little impact on Texas lands such as that purchased by Shandong Xinchao’s subsidiary, but will heavily impact states with large amounts of oil-producing federal lands such as New Mexico.

New Mexico Governor Quietly Gave Large Raises to Her Staff While Cutting Teacher and State Employee Raise

In a classic β€œdo as I say, not as I do” moment, New Mexico’s Democratic Governor asked thousands of employees to take the fiscal hit – even as she was quietly handing out $7,400 to $18,000 pay increases to her personal staff.

Last spring, a little over a month after issuing her first emergency order regarding COVID-19, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced at a weekly press conference the state would need to make reductions in spending because of the economic impact of the coronavirus and the faltering oil prices on state revenue.

 

She also issued a hiring freeze for state government and, according to a report in the Albuquerque Journal, β€œsuggested the hiring freeze would be one of several cost-cutting moves to be implemented, though she did not provide additional details.”

 

Besides neglecting to provide details about the pending cuts, the governor failed to mention she was giving several of her highly paid staff generous (five-figure) pay raises for the second time in under eighteen months in office.

 

The raises were given to her Roundhouse staff even as she and legislators were planning to take back the 4% raise promised teachers and state employees just a few weeks earlier.
