Lindsey Graham tells me that if Trump’s legal team starts trying to β€œprove” that Georgia/Pennsylvania/Wisconsin were β€œstolen” from Trump, β€œthat’s when you’re going to lose everybody. That’s when most of us will be ready to move on.”

 

Lindsay is scared. No doubt he is advising POTUS of that sam thing. Hopefully POTUS doesn't listen to him and introduces NSA info that he declassified before 1/20.

There must be a catalyst that "provokes" the military to intervene. It can't just be bad policy. There must be overwhelming evidence presented of the coup.

The crash happened near Boise

 

Three Idaho National Guard pilots have been killed after the Black Hawk helicopter they were traveling in crashed Tuesday night, officials announced Wednesday.

 

The incident happened around 8 p.m. during a routine training flight near Boise. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

 

"This is a tremendous loss to the Idaho National Guard and our community," Maj. Gen. Michael Garshak said in a statement.

Trump Team, Impeachment Managers Lay Out Arguments for Senate Trial

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump and Democrat impeachment managers filed trial memorandums on Feb. 2 outlining their arguments for the Senate trial expected to begin next week.

The Democrat memo alleges that Trump incited a mob that breached the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 by sowing doubt about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election. The memo by Trump’s legal team denies the allegation and argues that the trial is unconstitutional because Trump is no longer president.

Democrats face an uphill battle in the Senate. Forty-five Republican senators voted in favor of a resolution calling the trial unconstitutional, since Trump is now a private citizen. With the Senate split 50–50, the impeachment managers would have to convince 17 Republicans that the trial is constitutional and that Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection.

 

Trump’s defense team tied nearly every argument in the trial memo to the overarching point that the trial is unconstitutional. They argued that since the Constitution states that β€œimpeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy an office,” Trump cannot be tried since he can’t be removed. β€œThe constitutional provision requires that a person actually hold office to be impeached,” the defense memo, authored by Bruce Castor and David Schoen, states. β€œSince the 45th President is no longer β€˜President,’ the clause β€˜shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for …’ is impossible for the Senate to accomplish, and thus the current proceeding before the Senate is void ab initio as a legal nullity that runs patently contrary to the plain language of the Constitution.”

 

The Republicans’ focus on the constitutionality of the trial wasn’t lost on the impeachment managers, who devoted a significant portion of their memo to the argument that impeached former officials can still be tried. The impeachment managers’ memo cites a number of precedential examples, though none pertaining to a U.S. president. They argue that the Framers didn’t make a specific exception for former presidents and intended for impeachment and conviction to serve as a deterrent against corruption throughout their entire term in office.

 

β€œThe Framers were too savvy to make up a new rule, at odds with centuries of historical practice, that would allow officials to escape accountability by resigning at the last minute, or by waiting until near the end of their tenure in office to commit abuses, or by concealing misconduct until after they left public service,” the impeachment managers’ memo states.

β€œThis would create extremely dangerous and perverse incentives, especially for Presidents who sought to retain power by subverting election results in their final days. In designing the Constitution, the Framers aimed to ensure that the President could never become a King; they did not leave the Nation unprotected against abuse surrounding the transfer of power from one administration to the next.”

 

The Democrats’ trial memorandum cites excerpts from Trump’s Jan. 6 speech in Washington as evidence that he incited an insurrection. For example, the memo claims that Trump exhorted followers to β€œfight like hell [or] you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

The president had actually said in reference to his team’s courtroom efforts challenging the integrity of the election: β€œWe fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

 

Another selective quotation shows Trump saying: β€œYou’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.” A look at the previous sentence from Trump’s speech, which the Democrats omitted, shows that he was addressing the lawmakers who were convened to vet and certify the Electoral College votes.

β€œWe’re going to walk down to the Capitol and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them,” Trump said.

 

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Feb. 1 warned his Democratic colleagues against calling witnesses during the trial, threatening to call the FBI to testify.

β€œIf you open that can of worms, we’ll want the FBI to come in and tell us about how people pre-planned this attack and what happened with the security footprint at the Capitol. You open up Pandora’s Box if you call one witness,” Graham told Fox News on Feb. 2.

Trump replaced his lead legal counsel over the weekend. His new team, led by Schoen and Castor, will have just over a week to get ready before the trial.

Was in the army for a few years and before I even swore in and signed the papers the recruiter gave me my first lesson in covering shit up. I couldn't legally join bcuz I was smoking weed and you have to be clean to get in. He repeatedly asked me if I could pass piss test and I said no. Any anons have a suggestion for an upcoming move?

 

I'm looking to get out of the state I live in and move somewhere more conservative. I've been looking at Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

 

The main two concerns I have is employment and weather. I have an extreme sensitivity to heat. Anything over 65F and I'm getting uncomfortable. Once the needle hits 70 I'm seating bullets. 80 and I'm baked. The colder the better. Well, maybe not -20 I guess.

 

The states all seem to have a summer average around 80 - 90. The lowest I can find is Northern Idaho with 80F. That is just too hot. I'm forced to work night shifts to keep from getting heat stroke.

 

Does anyone know where the temp stays below 70 year round, cooler if possible?

Three Idaho Army National Guard personnel were killed after their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed south of Lucky Peak near Boise shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

 

All three personnel aboard were pilots with the Idaho Army National Guard participating in a routine training flight.

 

β€œThis is a tremendous loss to the Idaho National Guard and our community,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Garshak, adjutant general of Idaho and commander of the Idaho National Guard. β€œOur thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones as we work through this tragedy.”

 

Col. Christopher Burt, the Idaho Army National Guard’s state aviation officer, confirmed the aircraft was last contacted at 7:45 p.m. Once the Emergency Transmitter Locator device aboard the aircraft was activated shortly after 8 p.m., his team immediately initiated emergency aircraft recovery procedures, which included air and ground search and rescue crews.

 

At approximately 12:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, crews located the aircraft and personnel. The cause of the accident is unknown and an investigation will begin promptly.

 

Names of the deceased are being withheld until after next of kin have been notified.

 

Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Three weeks ago, it would have been unthinkable that the United States might be a candidate for a comprehensive counterinsurgency program. But that is where we are.

Overrepresented among the ranks of angry but ordinary citizens who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were others, hardly ordinary, committed to violent extremism: the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers, β€œChristian” national chauvinists, white supremacists and QAnon fantasists, among others. Some of these groups may have planned their incursion in advance, but they could not have breached the Capitol if not for the wave of populist anger that swept them forward and over the barricades.

Given impetus and, they believed, political cover by former President Donald Trump, the capering idiots who filmed themselves in the Capitol seemed to think they were untouchable. They may be easy to identify and arrest now, but there are others β€” well armed, dangerous and now forewarned β€” who had a glimpse of what may be possible in the political environment Mr. Trump created.

There has long existed in this country a large, religiously conservative segment of the population, disproportionately (though not entirely) rural and culturally marginalized, that believes with some reason it is being eclipsed by a politically and culturally ascendant urban coalition of immigrants, minorities and the college-educated secular elites of tech and mainstream media. That coalition, in their eyes, abridges their religious freedoms, disparages and β€˜cancels’ their most cherished beliefs, seeks to impose β€˜socialism’ and is ultimately prepared to seize their guns.

This, in very general terms, is the core segment of the nation that has been unified, championed and politically energized by Donald Trump.

 

Bridging the urban-rural cultural and political gap with facts, tolerance and empathetic sincerity is a vital national project, but one which has become effectively impossible. The sincere belief, reportedly held by a majority of Republicans, that the Democrats stole the recent national election through massive fraud has taken the longstanding fears and resentments of a large section of our fellow citizens to a new and qualitatively different level.

In context, their fury is understandable. If I believed as they do, I would be marching with them. The Big Lie perpetrated by Mr. Trump and his allies in the political class and among large elements of the right-wing media, preposterous as it may be, will have incalculable implications not just for long-term political comity in this country, but also for national security.

The violent demonstrations feared for Inauguration Week, in the face of extraordinary security precautions, didn’t materialize. Relatively few of our citizens would embark on a program of sustained violence in any case. But if popular anger has crested, left in its wake is a bitter, simmering restiveness, one that will provide a nurturing environment for the worst among us β€” the extremists who seek a social apocalypse. Their numbers may be relatively small, but even a small slice of a nation of over three hundred million is substantial. Without a program of effective national action, they and their new adherents are capable of producing endemic political violence of a sort not seen in this country since Reconstruction.

The challenge facing us now is one of counterinsurgency. Though one may recoil at the thought, it provides the most useful template for action, which must consist of three elements.

First, the easiest and most straightforward, is criminal justice. We should continue to track known extremists, and investigate and bring to account those who commit crimes. We have the expertise and the infrastructure to do so, and to do it while preserving civil liberties. We need no new statutes, nor should we import terrorist designations that should apply only to foreign groups beyond the reach of domestic law.

But the first element will not succeed without a second, which is even more important but far more difficult: We must isolate and alienate the committed insurgents from the population. Just as Al Qaeda in Iraq depended on a much larger community of disaffected Sunnis for tacit support and recruitment, we face the prospect of there being a mass of citizens β€” sullen, angry and nursing their grudges β€” among whom the truly violent minority will be able to live undetectably, attracting new adherents to their cause.

The fantasy that the presidency was stolen from Mr. Trump, which has gripped so much of the country, will not easily be broken. The nation is in an epistemological crisis. When β€œfacts” become untethered from objective reality, they become excuses to justify what one wants to believe. Yes, the problem is far worse on the right than on the left, but the problem is a general one.

We must establish, undeniably, what actually happened in the election. That requires neither new laws nor a thought police: It’s not something for the government, but for all of the nation. We must all earnestly engage in an effort to listen to others’ ideas, no matter how daft they may seem; to understand where such ideas come from, no matter how hateful the source; to meet assertion with reason and evidence, not counterassertion. And where our evidence is lacking, we must patiently seek it out.

Neighbor must speak with neighbor across the divide, rather than merely shunning alien views. Media figures must concede inconvenient facts, rather than tarring the other side with an emotionally satisfying broad brush. This is far from saying that all thoughts and ideas have equal validity: They do not. But truth is unavailing if not presented with clear underlying fact, and if not conveyed with respect. Success in restoring evidence-based truth as the language of public discourse is by no means assured, but lack of effort will doom us to failure.

To be sure, the nation’s fundamental and legitimate political divisions will remain. But while not all differences can be bridged, they can be tolerated. For their part, Democrats would do well to avoid the more extravagant aspects of their agenda, which might confirm the worst fears of the rural heartland. By bringing people together, we can isolate the extremists.

The final element of the plan concerns insurgency leadership. Mr. Trump’s transition from mere subversion of the constitutional order to open incitement of mass violence exposes what he has long represented to the most radical fringe of his supporters: a charismatic symbol. By shamelessly espousing the politics of white grievance and convincing so many that he actually won re-election, Mr. Trump has created the conditions necessary for the extremists’ success. They know better than to take his recent, ritualistic admonitions against violence at face value, and so should we. He will continue to be their champion, and his self-serving lies will be their most potent enabler.

As the Senate prepares to sit in judgment on Mr. Trump, we should be wary of the excuses put forward by his defenders β€” that his conviction will only divide the country further, that we should simply move on. No: It is far too late for appeasement. Those of us versed in counterinsurgency know that in violent extremism nothing succeeds like success, and that the opposite is also true.

I watched as enraged crowds in the streets of Algiers, as in most Arab capitals, melted away when Saddam Hussein was ignominiously defeated in the Persian Gulf war. Mass demonstrations in Pakistan in support of Osama bin Laden fell into dull quiescence when he was driven into hiding after Sept. 11. To blunt the extremists, Mr. Trump’s veneer of invincibility must similarly be crushed.

Defeating him politically was the first step. Given the continuing threat he poses, convicting him in the Senate and barring him from future elective office is not only a just punishment for his crimes but also a national security imperative. He will, and must, retain his First Amendment rights. But the public shunning and permanent diminishment of Mr. Trump is a necessary requirement of future peace.

The political and social divisions in our country will take time and application, from both sides, to heal. In the meantime, we minimize the threat at our peril.
