Watchdog says USPS spent nearly $110 million dealing with misrouted mail in seven-month period

 

Out of the more than 47 billion First-Class letters processed during a period spanning from March 1 through September 30, 2020, the USPS reported nearly 73 million misrouted.

 

The United States Postal Service expended nearly $110 million in a span of just seven months to deal with misrouted mail, according to the USPS Inspector General.

 

The watchdog reported that "the Postal Service spent almost $110 million between March 1 and September 30, 2020, to reprocess, rehandle, and redirect misrouted mail. Further, misrouted mail has a high risk of not meeting its stated service performance standards, which could hurt the Postal Service’s brand."

 

Out of the more than 47 billion First-Class letters processed during a period spanning from March 1 through September 30, 2020, the USPS reported nearly 73 million misrouted.

 

The number of First-Class packages and Priority mail processed during that timeframe and the number of First-Class packages and Priority Mail misrouted during that period are redacted.

Congressional Republicans request FBI briefing on Swalwell's connections to Chinese spy

 

Swalwell remains seated on several committees that are regularly briefed on top secret information pertaining to American national security

 

House Republicans are asking FBI Director Christopher Wray to hold a briefing on any past ties that Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell might have had to an alleged Chinese spy.

 

The members are asking to be briefed on the "full extent" of the Chinese targeting of Washington lawmakers.

 

"As our nation faces a growing security threat from the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) attempts to infiltrate and undermine the United States Government, we write to request a full briefing regarding counterintelligence threats to Members of Congress, including information related to Rep. Eric Swalwell’s ties to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative," the 14 members wrote in a letter Wednesday to Wray.

 

In December, it was revealed that, several years ago, a Chinese national named Christine Fang (or Fang Fang) had targeted and successfully infiltrated the circles of up-and-coming politicians including Swalwell, of California.

 

Fang interacted with Swalwell for years and placed at least one intern in his office. Swalwell was briefed by investigators about Fang's loyalties in 2015, and promptly cut off all ties with the spy.

 

More recently, Swalwell told Politico that he believes his role as an outspoken critic of former President Trump made him a prime target for the initial information leak that linked his office to Fang Fang.

 

"I’ve been a critic of the president. I’ve spoken out against him. I was on both committees that worked to impeach him. The timing feels like that should be looked at," the congressman said.

 

Republicans, however, have not dropped the matter as they continue to express concern about Swalwell's position on committees including the House Homeland Security Committee, which grants him access to significant amounts of classified information. Repeatedly, since December, Republicans have questioned the decision to allow Swalwell to remain on committees that traffic in top secret information pertaining to American national security.

 

"Given these injurious efforts to target a Member of the Committee, it is imperative that the House Committeee on Homeland Security receive a classified briefing detailing Rep. Swalwell’s relationship with Fang and any potential exposure of classified information," wrote the lawmakers.

"Door Is Always Open": China Invites UN Rights Chief To Investigate Uighur Genocide Charge

 

While vehemently rejecting widespread reports from the US and Western allies as well as various Europe-based human rights groups of a systematic campaign to ethnically cleanse Uighur Muslims, China is now "welcoming" a United Nations team to come and investigate the allegations.

 

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva at the start of this week via video call. Calling the allegations "slanderous attacks" he later at a news conference touted that "China has sent invitations to the high commissioner of the UN for human rights about a trip to China and Xinjiang."

 

“The two sides have maintained close communication on this matter,” Wang added. He had told the UN human rights session on Monday that "basic facts show that there has never been so-called genocide, forced labor or religious oppression in Xinjiang."

 

It follows the US formally designating it as such during the tail end of the Trump administration, something which Biden has signaled is up for review. There's long been widespread allegations of on million Uighurs forcibly detained in either labor or 'reeducation' camps under Communist authorities.

 

Wang said he's issued a personal invitation to UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet, after the UN team has long sought access to Xinjiang, where most of the detention camps are said to be. But much like the recent WHO trip to investigate the origins of coronavirus, such an endeavor is likely only to end in further accusations of a highly 'stage managed' and choreographed max obfuscation PR exercise.

 

"The door to Xinjiang is always open. People from many countries who have visited Xinjiang have learned the facts and the truth on the ground. China also welcomes the High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Xinjiang," Wang said in reference to Bachelet.

 

Wang's defense before the UN body centered on "Xinjiang-related issues" ultimately being about "countering terrorism and separatism", touting further that there's been zero terror attacks in the region for almost the last half-decade. He also claimed the Uighur population has actually grown, not decreased as would be expected if there were an ongoing "genocide".

We ALL have so many questions about America, our freedom, our families, our livelihoods, and our futures, to name a few. What happened to our country? How did we get here on the brink of totalitarianism? What is going to happen? What can/should we do?

You would think my head would be spinning.

I know what is happening. I started discussing it on Twitter early in 2020. No one banned me at first. That came later when my voice was heard by an increasing number of my fellow citizens. No one threatened my life. My heavily armed security team came later when my voice was heard by an increasing number of my fellow citizens.

What did I do wrong? I exercised my right of free speech to speak truth and stimulate the minds of those who were kind enough to follow me.

I am most certainly not a prophet and I have no crystal ball or time machine. How did I know?

I was awake. I was informed. Were you? If not, are you now after experiencing an attempt to steal the Presidency of our country and install a fake leader? I pray you are.

Overview

The idea of a large organisation controlling the minds and thoughts of individuals, pushing them towards a specific ideology and certain life choices, may seem as science fiction, or as an absurd conspiracy that can be found in books and movies. However, for some, it is certainly not a new surprising discovery that corporations, organisations and politicians, manipulate public opinion in order to fit certain agendas. These, are in their turn manipulated by even bigger and more powerful organisations, such as the government itself.

 

The CIA controlling and manipulating civilians’ minds is not fiction: it is a conspiracy turned out to be true during the 1970s in the USA.

Following the Second World War, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was able to gain control over what was being published not only in the USA but more in general across the globe. It exerted much influence over what the public should be allowed to see, and what should be concealed. In essence, it ruled what ‘the public saw, heard and read on a regular basis’ (Tracy 2018).

Operation Mockingbird is a United States CIA campaign that aimed not only to influence the media but also infiltrate it.

Since the 1950s, the CIA started recruiting journalists, editors, and students in order to write and promulgate false stories. The CIA’s stories were entirely propaganda and their employees were paid huge salaries in order to promote such fake news. Essentially, the CIA managed to control both national and international newspapers through a bribe.

During the ‘50s, Cord Meyer and Allen W. Dulles devised and organised a propaganda outreach program. They recruited leading American journalists into a network in order to promulgate the CIA’s views.

The CIA went to the extremes of funding students, cultural organisations, and magazines that would spread the CIA’s views of events.

However, the suspicion that the CIA could manipulate public opinion arose between 1972-1974 due to the Watergate Scandal, which exposed President Nixon’s involvement in the war in Vietnam.

In fact, Nixon had adopted two strategies: whereas on the one side he was employing aggressive strategies in order to try and appease North Vietnam, on the other, he was trying to appease the protests in the U.S. by demonstrating through the press and the news that he was aiming to achieve a peace agreement and bring home the American troops. When the truth about Nixon’s Vietnamization was revealed, many started to question up to which point was the CIA enmeshed in the publishing of news and information (Slate 2018).

Moreover, during the Cold War, the CIA supported many prominent writers and artists such as Arthur Schlesinger and Jackson Pollock in their ‘propaganda war against the Soviet Union’ (Washington 2017).

In 1977, Carl Bernstein published The CIA and the Media in Rolling Stone. The article exposed much of the CIA’s attitude towards the spreading of fake news and it’s tacit’ as well as ‘explicit’ collaboration with journalists. Bernstein explains how journalists did not limit themselves to write what the CIA suggested: their relationship was much more complicated and intimate. In fact, reporters ‘shared their notebooks with the CIA’, some of the journalists were also award-winning writers, and others became spies in Communist countries (Bernstein 1977).

According to Dice (2016), more than a billion dollars were being invested each year in such propaganda programs. The CIA’s writers were generously retributed, and there were no limits on how much they could receive: sometimes they were paid more than half a million dollars to spread the information required by the CIA.

When the CIA was caught out in their wrongdoings, they did not reveal the newspapers and the names of the journalists with whom they had collaborated in the past (Harrock 1976).

However, in 1973, the Washington Star published the names of around three dozens of American journalists. According to the CIA, revealing the names of those who had worked with them, meant ‘endangering’ the writers’ and reporters’ lives, as well as making them appear in a ‘ridicule’ light (Harrock 1976).

Church Committee and actions to prevent the CIA’s involvement in the news

During the 1970s, the Church Committee was created by Senator Frank Church in order to investigate any ‘government operations and potential abuses’ carried out by the CIA, the NSA, the FBI, and the IRS (Goldfarb 2018). During an interview, Senator Church publicly claimed: ‘we have quite a lot of detailed information and we will evaluate it and we will include any evidence of wrongdoing or any evidence of impropriety in our final report, and we will make recommendation’.

 

In 1973, the CIA published Family Jewels, a book which exposes all the information that had been hidden and/or manipulated through the years. The book is around seven-hundred pages long.

Moreover, in the same year the Director of the CIA, William E. Colby stated that ‘CIA will undertake no activity in which there is a risk of influencing domestic public opinion, either directly or indirectly. The Agency will continue its prohibition against the placement of material in the American media. In certain instances, usually, where the initiative is on the part of the media, CIA will occasionally provide factual non-attributable briefings to various elements of the media, but only in cases where we are sure that the senior editorial staff is aware of the source of the information provided’ (Slate 2018; citing Colby).

 

In 1975, the CIA admitted their manipulation of mainstream media in order to forge and redirect the opinions of American citizens. They admitted that information was distorted in order to fit specific agendas. Following a report published by the U.S. Congress in 1976: ‘The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets’.Although in 1975 George H.W. Bush publicly ended the CIA relations with the U.S. media, the CIA is still actively involved with foreign news organisations, which in turn, feed the United States media with information.

Bush established that ‘the CIA will not enter into any paid or contractual relationships with any full-time or part-time news correspondent accredited by any United States news service, newspaper, periodical, radio or television network or station’ (Slate 2018).

Although in 1976, Colby claimed that Central Intelligence had broken all relations and ties with journalists in 1973, this is hard to believe (Harrock 1976). Moreover, he also stated that he did not see any harm in purchasing information from ‘part-time correspondents who sell their information to news organisations in the country’ (Harrock 1976).

However, a general suspicion took over the Capitol City: all conservative journalists and former CIA employees that had rapidly achieved recognition within the news world were now regarded with mistrust (Harrock 1976).

The same year, Senator Church published in his report that the CIA had a strong network composed of ‘several hundred foreign individuals around the world’ that were dedicated to providing the Central Intelligence with misleading news (Slate 2018).

In fact, American journalist Scott Shane gives an account of his experience with the CIA: in 1979, he received their recruitment letter in which they ‘expressed “tentative interest” in [his] qualifications’ (Shane 2018). Shane declined the offer of collaborating with the CIA, and his file was placed in the ‘inactive section’ (Shane 201).

According to Bernstein (1977), the people that worked undercover for the CIA often were employed by the ‘CBS, Time, the New York Times, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Copley News Service, ABC, NBC, Reuters’, and so on. Moreover, throughout the 1950s, the CIA invested much money in training their agents as journalists: according to members of the CIA, they ‘were taught to make noises like reporters’ before being placed in powerful organisations (Bernstein 1977).

In essence, mass media is able to implement manipulative strategies in order to alter ‘global perception’ about events, people, and situations (Washington 2017; citing Davis 2008). Certainly, it would be naive to believe that the government has stopped paying journalists ‘to spread disinformation’ (Washington 2017). The United States are often the first to spread information in order to serve their own objectives: as Washington (2017) points out, ‘the government plants disinformation in American media in order to mislead foreigners’.

Most of us believe or want to believe that our fellow man has good intentions and is honest. ALERT! That is not the case.

They could care less about the average hard working citizen who just want to work hard, play fair, be with family and friends and enjoy a good life. You see, in order for the CORRUPT to get more of anything, they have to take more from us, the lower to middle class. Now we see the elitists, the globalists, CCP, and the like wanting to take almost total control of our country and the world. In order for them to do so, they have to take away our freedom from us. Just like they do with wealth. To get more money for themselves. They have to take more of our hard-earned money from us.

Washington attorney Mark Schamel said his clientdid, in fact, warn Babbitt and other rioters to keep back – and that he did so firmly and repeatedly.

 

Oklahoma Republican Rep. Mark wayne Mullin, who witnessed the mayhem from behind the barricade, said that although there will be questions about the officer's use of deadly force, he “didn’t have a choice at that time.”

Dutch police announce 23 tons of cocaine seized by authorities in record haul

 

A record-setting 23 tons (16,174 kilos) of cocaine destined for the Netherlands has been seized at ports in Germany and Belgium, Dutch authorities announced after a joint operation involving law enforcement in the three countries.

Elite Panic Over The California Recall Shows What They Think Of Democracy

 

The latest signature count for the effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom is over 1.7 million, and “alarmed party leaders” are panicking, making “all hands on deck” calls to try to head off this extraordinary citizens’ movement.

 

In an infamous press conference, the Chair of the State Democratic Party and other Newsom allies dubbed the Recall “The California Coup.” This earned a “Pants on Fire” rating from Capital Public Radio, whose fact check concluded the description was “far off base and wildly inaccurate,” since a “coup is a violent overthrow of a government” while a “recall is a legally sanctioned effort” that’s “been part of California’s constitution for more than a century.”

 

In a scathing editorial, the LA Times said the press conference “undermined the state’s legitimate direct democracy system.” And it almost certainly would not have happened without Newsom’s blessing; indeed, he refused to repudiate it when asked.

 

This disdain for both logic and democracy has been a continuing theme in the arguments of Recall opponents:

 

Several opponents have adopted a talking point that the Recall is a “distraction.” That would be a reason never to have elections at all.

Other Newsom allies are claiming it would “overturn a democratic election.” We actually don’t elect people for life in this country.

A State Senator leading the anti-Recall charge says their strategy is “all about reducing signatures.” That sounds a lot like voter suppression.

The Newsom camp also insists a Recall would cost too much. In fact, it would cost about a quarter of a percent of the rampant unemployment fraud under Governor Newsom’s watch.

California’s lieutenant governor called the Recall a “quirky” procedure to “slip” a new Governor in. I imagine this is how British monarchists spoke of the pesky American colonists, with their quirky notions of freedom and self-government.

 

What’s most telling is almost everyone is attacking the process rather than trying to defend Newsom. One outspoken Recall opponent even called the signature sheets “poisonous petitions.”

 

Even while publicly saying he’s not focused on the Recall “at all,” Newsom has been calling legislators to try to shore up support. He’s even wrangled a few into making positive statements at press conferences that have become taxpayer-funded pep rallies. As Lauren Rosenhall, a political reporter for CalMatters noted, “These covid updates appear to be doing double duty as recall-prevention sessions.”

 

Newsom has also made it clear that partisan warfare will be his strategy, with his camp claiming that “the Trump train doesn’t want to leave the station.” In fact, the Recall is bringing together people of all party affiliations and all walks of life. It is not only the greatest citizens’ movement in California history but also the most diverse one. That’s what has the political class and Special Interests who benefit from Gavin Newsom’s corruption so maniacally worried.

Surge in serious respiratory illness among children puts doctors on high alert

 

Doctors are observing an alarming rise in Victorian children presenting to hospital emergency departments with a potentially serious respiratory illness that can cause pneumonia.

 

Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Victoria faculty chair Mya Cubitt said hospital clinicians were on high alert after seeing “more than winter levels” of children presenting with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

 

In severe cases, RSV infection can spread to the lower respiratory tract, leading to pneumonia or bronchiolitis in young children by causing inflammation of the small airway passages entering the lungs. RSV is the most common cause of respiratory and breathing infections in children.

 

The respiratory illness, which typically peaks in Australia during winter, can also cause croup, an infection of the upper airway that obstructs breathing and causes a barking cough.

 

“There is definitely a surge in children presenting with RSV across the entire healthcare system,” Dr Cubbit said.

 

“In other words, there are clearly a large number of sick kids needing acute care at the moment.”

 

Murdoch Children’s Research Institute respiratory physician Danielle Wurzel said while NSW and Western Australia experienced significant surges of RSV in the latter half of last year, Victoria’s prolonged COVID-19 lockdown meant it may not have experienced its peak of cases yet.

 

“I suspect that over the coming months we will be seeing the peak of it,” Dr Wurzel said.

 

“It does warrant a degree of vigilance and concern because it is so unseasonal and unprecedented.

 

“The fact that it’s already here, at this time of year, means it is quite difficult to predict what will happen as we move into the cooler months and whether circulation will increase along with the re-emergence of other seasonal viruses, such as influenza.”

The New York Times reports she was assigned to a unit based near Washington that is known as the “Capital Guardians” as their primary missions was defending the city. In what the Air Force calls “civil disturbance missions”, security forces in the squadron regularly train with riot shields and clubs, the report explains. As per an Air Force spokeswoman, she was deployed twice more, to the United Arab Emirates in 2012 and 2014.

 

 

Babbitt's grandfather, Tony Mazziott, told 'Good Morning America' in an emotional interview, “She served time in the military and she's passionate about everything, particularly Donald Trump for some reason.” She soon metTimothy McEntee while she was on active duty from 2004 to 2008. After marriage, the two had a military dog named SorbonBabbitt's ex McEntee called her a “wonderful woman with a big heart and a strong mind” in an email to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

 

On June 25, 2019, she married her second husband Aaron Babbitt and the couple lived in a modest duplex in Spring Valley, near San Diego. The two met at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant and she filed for divorce from McEntee in 2018.

 

In 2016, Babbitt left the military as a relatively low-ranking senior airman, much before she could have become eligible for a pension. From 2015, she had started working in security at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant in Maryland — where she met her husband — and was employed there until 2017, according to a representative for Exelon, the energy company that runs the plant.

 

A look at her business

 

Soon after,she helped purchase Fowlers Pool Service and Supply, and worked with her family on it. “We all worked together as a family — my other little brother, me, her husband, me, my uncle,” her brother Roger Witthoeft said. “It was kind of nice, a family affair.”

 

However, the family struggled in business and reported took a costly short-term business loan in 2017. Moreover, leaving the mililtary gave her time to participate in politics. The door of the pool-supply company had a poster that dubbed it a “mask free autonomous zone, better known as America,” where “we shake hands like men, fist bump like homies.”

 

Did you know that she once harassed her husband's former girlfriend?According to a protection order, Ashli approached her on a roadway and had rear-ended her car three times. “She was screaming at me and verbally threatening,” the complaint read and the former girlfriend again applied for a protection order the following year.

 

Crimes and legal troubles

 

With her business in trouble, Babbitt took a loan at an interest rate of 169 percent, according to court filings. Struggling with finances, she stopped making payments, only repaying about $3,400 of the $65,000 borrowed from the lender, EBF Partners, and was soon sued, according to the records.

Report: US taxpayers could fund Chinese Wuhan lab until 2024

 

A Wuhan virology laboratory that is believed by some U.S. assessments to have been the source of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, is still eligible to receive U.S. taxpayer funding through the National Institute of Health (NIH), according to a new report by the Daily Caller News Foundation last week.

 

NIH officials confirmed to the Daily Caller that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China is still eligible to receive funding for animal research through January 2024. The NIH is funded through congressional appropriations of U.S. taxpayer dollars.

 

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare for the NIH currently lists the Wuhan lab as having a foreign assurance which, according to the NIH, makes the assurance holder eligible for Public Health Service (PHS). An NIH spokesperson told the Daily Caller the Wuhan lab had its foreign assurance renewed on Jan. 9, 2019, and that the assurance is good for five years, through Jan. 31, 2024.

The US Federal Reserve announced Wednesday it is investigating a disruption to services including Fedwire, which facilitates trillions of dollars in wire transfers between institutions every day.

 

According to updates from the Federal Reserve, the massive disruption to services was caused by an “operational error”.

 

"We acknowledge that payment deadlines are impacted and will communicate remediation efforts to our customers when available. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the issue," the institution said in an update on the situation.

Things to consider: Avoid St Louis area/burbs included and Jackson County, MO (KC)- areas just outside Jackson County are really good and the price of land is outstanding. PA Governor-Elect Wolf Names Sexually Confused Man to be His Physician General

 

(Harrisburg) — On Saturday Governor-elect Tom Wolf began paying back the homosexual, bisexual and transgender Pennsylvanians who voted for him. He named transgender Rachel Levine to be his physician general. Dr. Levine is a professor at Penn State College of Medicine and currently sits on the board of Equality PA, which worked extensively for Wolf’s election. The American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA), a statewide group promoting the natural family, is astounded that Governor-elect Wolf would name a sexually-confused individual to this position to “advise the governor and secretary of the Department of Health on medical and public health-related issues” and is asking the State Senate not to confirm Dr. Levine.

 

“Tom Wolf is following the lead of another liberal governor — Terry McAuliffe of Virginia who just one year ago named Dr. Marissa Levine, another transgender, to be his Commissioner of Health. Wolf’s transgender nominee Rachel Levine was a man up until about five years ago– obviously a very confused man. In 1996, about the time the physician general position was created under Governor Tom Ridge, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center hired an individual who, fifteen years or so later, would decide he is not a man, but a woman. He has been an activist for the sexually confused for ten years and will continue that activism. Levine hopes to use the position of physician general to normalize transgenderism to “serve as a mentor and role model” for others who are sexually confused. This is a mistake,” Diane Gramley, president of the AFA of PA commented.

 

Levine not only serves on the board of Equality PA, but is also the liaison for LGBT Affairs for the Penn State Hershey Office of Diversity. Tom Wolf has nominated a homosexual/transgender activist to a position overseeing health issues in PA. Wolf said in Saturday’s news release announcing Levine’s nomination, ” It is important to me that we place equal emphasis on behavioral and physical health issues.” Obviously Tom Wolf has shown his confusion on these issues by nominating Levine.

 

Dr. Joseph Berger, a Toronto consulting psychiatrist and an expert in the field of mental illness, says that from a medical and scientific perspective there is no such thing as a “transgendered” person. He explained that cosmetic surgery will not change the chromosomes of a human being in that it will not make a man become a woman, capable of menstruating, ovulating, and having children, nor will it make a woman into a man, capable of generating sperm that can unite with an egg or ovum from a woman and fertilize that egg to produce a human child.

 

Dr. Paul McHugh, former Johns Hopkins chief of psychiatry and the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, notes “the transgendered person’s disorder is in the person’s “assumption” that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a “dangerously thin” person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are “overweight.”

Health care groups and lobbyists tied to nursing homes flooded Gov. Cuomo’s campaign coffers with cash last year as the state shielded hospitals and long-term care facilities from the threat of lawsuits stemming from the coronavirus outbreak.

 

Lawmakers and critics are raising questions about the donations and ties as the governor and his administration are embroiled in a ballooning controversy over Cuomo’s office admitting it failed to make the total death toll of nursing home residents killed by COVID public due to a federal probe.

 

According to campaign finance records, Cuomo accepted at least $126,000 from the Greater New York Hospital Association and other industry groups and related lobbyists in the months surrounding last year’s budget, which included an 11th-hour amendment granting New York nursing homes broad legal protections from lawsuits and criminal prosecutions as the state became the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S.

 

Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Queens), an outspoken Cuomo critic who has publicly sparred with the governor in recent weeks, voted against the measure and has fought to repeal the immunity statute since last summer.

 

He and others are now calling on the governor to turn over documents and correspondences related to the immunity push and to return all healthcare-related donations.

 

“It’s clear that that industry wrote the bill, and they’re one of the only groups that had access at that time,” Kim told the Daily News. “You can’t put a toxic bill like that in the budget without having full access to the executive office.”

 

Joined by other elected officials at a rally outside City Hall on Wednesday, Kim said he believes there’s a connection between the legal immunity, and the way the administration reported coronavirus deaths of nursing home residents.

 

For months, health department officials delayed releasing the complete number of COVID-19 deaths of nursing home and long-term care residents. The state had reported the number of long-term care residents who died at 9,154, separating those who died in hospitals versus in the facilities in which they lived.

 

The death toll increased to about 15,000 as a result of revised figures released in the wake of a blistering report from Attorney General Letitia James that accused officials of under-counting the deaths of seniors living in such facilities by as much as 50%.

 

The hospital association, which has framed its push for liability protections as an effort to defend workers, openly admits that the group “drafted and aggressively advocated for” the immunity provision.

 

“As has been widely reported, GNYHA advocated for the state’s COVID-19 immunity law,” spokesman Brian Conway said in a statement. “We continue to believe, given the extraordinarily challenging circumstances facing hospitals and other providers during this pandemic, that it is right to protect health care facilities and their staff from liability except in cases of gross negligence and intentional wrongdoing.”

 

Conway said the group has constantly been in touch with city, state and federal officials throughout the pandemic to discuss directives ensuring hospitals increase bed capacity, transferring patients among hospitals, and addressing PPE, ventilator, and medication shortages as well as the immunity push on the state and national level.

 

Legislators rolled back part of New York’s measure last summer, allowing lawsuits and prosecutions unrelated to coronavirus patients to proceed. However, patients and family members are still barred from suing hospitals or nursing homes over care “related to the diagnosis or treatment of COVID-19.”

 

Campaign disclosures also show the hospital association was far from the only health care group donating to Cuomo as the COVID crisis tore through the Empire State. The Healthcare Association Of New York State, another trade group that supported protections, and related lobbyists gave Cuomo $90,000 in the months before and just after the budget passed last year.

 

David Weinraub, principal of Brown & Weinraub, which was retained by the group in 2019 to lobby on health care issues, gave Cuomo $15,000 just three months after the liability protections became law. Weinraub’s wife chipped in another $10,000 the same day.

 

The state affiliate of the American Medical Association, another group that advocated for liability protections at the state level, gave Cuomo $10,000 in December.

The group called on Cuomo and the state Democratic Committee to return a total of $10 million in contributions from GNYHA, a full repeal of the immunity provision and a Congressional hearing into New York’s nursing home death toll.

 

Cuomo spokesman Jack Sterne noted in a statement that a majority of Assembly and Senate Dems approved the budget

Victim’s glasses found in car of South Dakota AG who said he hit a deer

 

South Dakota’s attorney general — who said he hit a deer after fatally striking a pedestrian last year — allegedly had the victim’s glasses inside his car, according to newly-released interviews.

 

The state’s Department of Public Safety on Tuesday released recordings of investigators questioning Jason Ravnsborg about the Sept. 12 crash that left 55-year-old Joseph Boever dead.

 

The footage shows how, during a Sept. 14 interview, detectives told Ravnsborg that they had discovered a pair of broken glasses on the front passenger floorboard of his vehicle.

 

During a second sit-down on Sept. 30, interviewers asked about the glasses again, telling Ravnsborg that they had belonged to the victim.

 

“They’re Joe’s glasses,” an agent says, referring to Boever. “So that means his face came through your windshield.”

 

Upon hearing that, Ravnsborg looked down and sighed deeply, before shaking his head, the footage shows.

 

“I did not see those glasses until you showed them to me,” he said.

 

The agent told Ravnsborg that “the only way for them to get there is through the windshield.”

 

“His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about that.”

 

Ravnsborg maintained that he hadn’t seen the glasses until investigators showed them to him — and that he truly didn’t realize he’d hit a person at the time of the crash.

 

“I did not see him. I did not see anything,” Ravnsborg insisted. “I did not know it was a human until the next day.”

 

An investigator replied that: “You think you had an idea it was something other than a deer, though?”

 

“I just believed it was a deer.” Ravnsborg replied. “I do.”

 

After the crash, Ravnsborg told authorities that he thought he had plowed his 2011 Ford Taurus into a deer or another large animal as he drove on US Highway 14 at about 10:30 p.m.

 

He was on his way home from a GOP fundraiser at Rooster’s Bar and Grill, where attendees were offered the chance to win a handgun engraved with then-President Trump’s name, according to the South Dakota GOP’s website.

 

The 44-year-old Republican was charged in the incident last week and faces three counts of careless driving, operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile electronic device and veering out of his lane.

 

Authorities said the evidence didn’t support more serious felony raps, and that Ravnsborg was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.

 

Ravnsborg, who was elected to his first term in 2018, was distracted when he swerved into Boever, who was walking on the highway’s shoulder, according to crash investigators.

 

South Dakota House lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Ravnsborg on Tuesday, following the release of the interviews and other investigative materials.

 

Lawmakers argued in the impeachment resolution that Ravnsborg should be removed from office for “his crimes or misdemeanors in office causing the death” of Boever.

Lucid Motors to go public in SPAC deal

 

Electric-vehicle maker Lucid Motors has agreed to go public by merging with a blank-check company backed by former Citigroup executive Michael Klein.

 

The deal with Churchill Capital Corp. IV is worth $11.75 billion and comes after stock-market investors pushed up the SPAC's shares last month amid speculation Churchill was targeting Lucid for a merger.

 

Lucid will net some $4.4 billion in cash from the transaction; the deal includes $2.1 billion from the blank-check company and a $2.5 billion PIPE investment—the largest of its kind in a SPAC deal—the companies said.

 

The PIPE would give the combined company an implied value of $24 billion.

 

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, BlackRock, Fidelity Management & Research, Franklin Templeton, Neuberger Berman, Wellington Management and Winslow Capital Management funded the PIPE.

 

The Saudi fund invested over $1 billion in Lucid in 2019. Before that, the EV maker received funding from investors including China's state-owned holding company BAIC Motor and Tsing Capital.

Salesforce recently informed Project Veritas that they will end the current working relationship stating that it was a “business decision.” Project Veritas asked Salesforce for clarification on this matter, but it has not been provided.

 

Project Veritas’ new Chief Technology Officer, Michael Schaefer, consistently attempted to work collaboratively with Salesforce but was ignored up until the moment that Salesforce sent the email announcing the end of the relationship.

 

“I don’t understand what Salesforce’s ‘business decision’ is based on. We are a customer that pays like clockwork and has required very little in return for our loyalty. We have to wonder if we were cut off because we caught some Big Tech executives telling the truth recently and exposed that truth to the public,” Schaefer said.

 

According to TheStreet, Salesforce is expected to report its Q4 2020 earnings on Thursday, Feb. 25. Shareholders will have the ability to question executives on the company’s recent policies.

As The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week, the parties are closing in on a deal in which SoftBank, WeWork’s majority shareholder, would buy about $1.5 billion of stock from other investors, including nearly $500 million from Mr. Neumann. That is about half as much as it previously planned to buy.

 

But part of the deal not previously reported sets Mr. Neumann apart from other shareholders. It calls for SoftBank to give the 41-year-old the $50 million special payout and extend by five years a $430 million loan it made to him in late 2019, the people said. SoftBank is also slated to pay $50 million for Mr. Neumann’s legal fees. It isn’t clear how much it is paying for the other shareholders’ legal fees.

 

The settlement between SoftBank, Mr. Neumann and the other shareholders isn’t final and the terms could still change, the people cautioned. Should the parties reach agreement, potentially in the next few days, it would avert an early-March trial.

 

WeWork is separately negotiating a combination with a special-purpose acquisition company called BowX Acquisition Corp. that would provide the startup with a public listing, people familiar with the discussions said. While the talks could still fall apart and other options are being considered, WeWork and BowX could reach agreement as soon as next week, some of the people said.

 

The monthslong legal skirmish centers around a commitment SoftBank made in October 2019 to buy $3 billion of stock from existing WeWork shareholders, including nearly $1 billion from Mr. Neumann. SoftBank, which was bailing out a teetering WeWork after its planned IPO collapsed, also agreed to pay a four-year, $185 million consulting fee to Mr. Neumann, who agreed to step down as chairman and CEO. In addition, it lent him nearly $500 million to refinance another loan.

 

The extra payment to Mr. Neumann could reopen old wounds with WeWork employees and investors, who were furious when the $185 million payout became public.

 

Employees to whom Mr. Neumann had long preached a “we over me” ethos were stunned by the contrast between his exit package and their personal financial situation. Most had stock options that had become virtually worthless as the value of WeWork plunged to around $8 billion from $47 billion.

 

Mr. Neumann never received the full amount of the consulting contract, the people said: SoftBank paid him around $130 million before stopping payment amid the legal fight.

 

Last April, as the coronavirus pandemic swept the U.S., SoftBank declined to go ahead with the $3 billion payment. It cited terms of the deal that it said hadn’t been completed, including the restructuring of a subsidiary in China. WeWork shareholders, represented by early WeWork investors on the board, and Mr. Neumann filed separate lawsuits, and the sides traded legal motions over much of the past year.

 

The nearly $500 million in stock Mr. Neumann is set to sell represents about 25% of his holdings. The per-share price he is getting is about the same as in the earlier agreement, people familiar with the matter said.
