BigMikeAnon Pompeo sought flurry of unmaskings last spring

 

State Department officials requested the unmasking of the identities of American citizens or permanent residents or companies in intelligence reports on at least 285 occasions during the Trump administration, with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo making at least 33 such requests, records obtained by POLITICO show.

 

Pompeo, who was sworn in in April 2018, appears to have gone on an unmasking binge in late 2019 and early 2020. His first request came on August 23, 2019, and they seemed to accelerate thereafter, reaching a frequency of several per week in late April and May 2020, when the newly released summary ends.

 

The spring 2020 timeframe coincides with an aggressive effort by President Donald Trump, his aides and congressional Republicans to attack Obama administration officials for their use of the unmasking procedure in 2016 and 2017 as concerns grew about Russian interference in the U.S. presidential race.

 

A list of unmasking requests former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell sent to Congress of officials who’d requested unmasking of reports about retired Army Gen. Michael Flynn included then-Vice President Joe Biden. He sought the unmasking of a record containing Flynn’s name on January 12, 2017, eight days before Trump was sworn in.

 

POLITICO obtained a 10-page document listing State Department unmasking requests this week through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed last June in conjunction with the James Madison Project, a Washington-based pro-transparency organization.

 

β€œThe document highlights the fact that β€˜unmasking’ is really a routine procedure,” said Steven Aftergood, a classified information expert at the Federation of American Scientists. β€œAt the State Department alone, it is pursued nearly every week if not every day. Allegations by Trump that unmasking was somehow a nefarious move are in retrospect seen to be ridiculous.”

 

Still, some top officials are notably absent from the lengthy list. According to the newly released records, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who served as Trump’s first chief diplomat, never requested a single unmasking during his 14 months on the job.

 

The list shows 95 unmasking requests made during the last year of the Obama administration. No request was recorded as coming from the secretary of state at the time, John Kerry, or his office.

 

While Pompeo and some other senior State officials were publicly identified as requesting unmaskings, the names of those making many of the requests were deleted from the released version on privacy grounds. A large volume of the requests from State came from its Bureau of Diplomatic Security, which provides protection to diplomats around the world and tracks threats to American businesses.

 

The State Department’s summary lists the office responsible for each request, but does not appear to consistently reflect which specific official requested an unmasking until around May 2019. Most requests after that time are linked to a named official, although the department withheld many of the requesters’ names on privacy grounds.

 

An assistant to Pompeo did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

 

A State spokesperson said its Diplomatic Security Service makes unmasking requests in the course of its investigations.

 

β€œDSS is a law enforcement organization with investigative authority. DSS makes requests, as appropriate, consistent with that authority,” said the spokesperson, without elaborating further.

 

The records do not indicate if all the requests were granted by the intelligence agencies involved. The document also doesn’t say which intelligence agency received such requests or the subject matter of the underlying reports.

 

A report issued last April by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said that 7,724 unmasking requests came in from across the government in 2019 to the country’s 17 intelligence agencies. Of those requests, 6,845 were approved. Requests can come from certain federal officials as well as some state and local governments.

 

In January 2018, responding to President Donald Trump’s repeated complaints about Obama-era unmaskings, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats issued a directive tightening the requirements and ordering more reporting on use of the authority. That order also said agencies must record exactly who requested an unmasking, why and the names of any other individuals who will receive the information. Coats also put special limits on the use of such information during a presidential transition.

WITHu One of the reassuring ideas of the Internet age is the idea that our data is stored in a β€œcloud” and thus secured in a downright heavenly way. Thanks to the cloud, nobody has to fear that all the documents stored there will be stolen with their laptop, and anyone who throws their mobile phone into the saucepan while reading a recipe can still upload their photos and SMS to a replacement device. The data - that is the idea suggested by the propaganda language of the internet operators - float thanks to cloud technology transcended to eternal knowledge in global space; placeless, unassailable, indelible.

Of course, the β€œcloud” is just metaphor. Data is stored in data centers, which are sometimes called β€œdata centers”, sometimes with an idyllic, rural undertone β€œserver farm”, as if data were being grown there by hard-working electricians instead of corn and potatoes. The fact that data centers, in which one of the greatest treasures of the information age - namely billions in value - are stored, are housed in faceless, gigantic halls outside the cities, is not only due to security concerns, but also to the fact that their locatability is no more an issue than their physicality - and their filthiness. The internet is literally a dirty business.

Despite all efforts to achieve climate neutrality in the near future, data centers still consume enormous amounts of energy. If the internet were a country, it would come directly after the United States and China in the disciplines of power consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and bitcoin mining, pursued by speculators in the age of asset inflation, does not improve that balance. The emergency power generators in many data centers are often operated with diesel. It can be said that the seemingly virtual, environmentally friendly Internet actually smells of exhaust fumes. A devastating fire has now broken out at Europe's largest cloud provider OVH. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, a five-story high data center with space for 12,000 servers in Strasbourg on the banks of the Rhine burned down completely last Wednesday, and another building was half destroyed. The destroyed building also housed the sensitive "hosted private cloud" in which the data of large companies is stored. The French Internet service provider, which is the European market leader in hosting with more than 260,000 servers in more than twenty data centers, was forced to shut down all four halls. Operation Vulcan (22 April–6 May 1943) and Operation Strike (6–12 May 1943) were the final ground attacks by the Allied forces against the Italian and German forces in Tunis, Cape Bon, and Bizerte, the last Axis toeholds in North Africa, during the Tunisia Campaign of the Second World War.

 

Background

 

Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel believed that the Axis position in Tunisia was untenable, and he had recommended the evacuation of all German troops to Italy, where he believed they could be more useful. His advice was rejected by Adolf Hitler. In April 1943, a major Allied air force effort (Operation Flax) had cut off Axis supplies to North Africa. U.S. II Corps, commanded by Major General Omar Nelson Bradley, surrounded the last defenders at Enfidaville, ending the Axis effort in North Africa. Operation Retribution and the control of the air and of the sea prevented any large-scale evacuation of Axis troops to Italy. The initial offensive was codenamed Vulcan.

The fighting was costly against German units in well-prepared and dug-in defences. In the advance on Tunis, the British 4th Infantry Division (British IX Corps, Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks) was opposed by German paratroops (Fallschirmjager) of the elite Hermann GΓΆring Parachute Division. At Cactus Far, the British infantry was faced by extensive defensive fire from well-concealed German paratroopers. Churchill tanks of the 12th Royal Tank Regiment (21st Tank Brigade), advanced without infantry support and the tanks were assaulted by the defenders using Molotov cocktails and sticky "teller" anti-tank mines. Twelve tanks were destroyed and in some cases, their crews were rescued from the burning wrecks by the Germans.

 

Strike

 

On 30 April it was realized that a revision was necessary to achieve success. The revised final phase of the assault on Tunis was codenamed Strike and launched six days later. On that day, the British First Army (Lieutenant-General Kenneth Anderson), took Tunis and American troops reached Bizerte. The German commander, General Hans-JΓΌrgen von Arnim finally surrendered on 12 May.

 

Aftermath

 

On 13 May, all remaining Axis forces in Tunisia, under the command of Marshal Giovanni Messe, surrendered unconditionally. Messe had, with Mussolini's approval, tried to negotiate an "honourable surrender" the previous day, but this had been rejected. Earlier in the morning he was promoted to the rank of field marshal but the Allies would not accept anything but an unconditional surrender and threatened to resume their attacks, which had been halted the day before. At 12:20 hours Messe gave the orders. He and the remaining German commander, Kurt von Liebenstein, surrendered late in the day. By the close of the operation, nearly 240,000 German and Italian troops had been captured.

Interdasting read on dem election fraud and constitutional crisis

 

In the presidential election of 1876, Democrat Samuel Tilden ran against Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. At the end of election day, no clear winner emerged because the outcomes in South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana were unclear. Both parties claimed victory in those states, but Republican-controlled β€œreturning” boards would determine the official electoral votes.

Republicans and Democrats rushed to those three states to watch and try to influence the counting of the votes. The returning boards determined which votes to count and could throw out votes, if they deemed them fraudulent. The returning boards in all three states argued that fraud, intimidation, and violence in certain districts invalidated votes, and they threw out enough Democratic votes for Hayes to win. All three returning boards awarded their states’ electoral votes to Hayes.

 

Meanwhile in Oregon, a strange development added that state to the uncertain mix. Hayes won the state, but one of the Republican electors, John W. Watts, was also postmaster, and the US Constitution forbids federal officeholders from being electors. Watts planned to resign from his position in order to be a Republican elector, but the governor of Oregon who was a Democrat, disqualified Watts and instead certified a Tilden elector.

Electors cast their ballots in state capitals on December 6, 1876. Generally, the process went smoothly but in four capitalsβ€”Salem, Oregon; Columbia, South Carolina; Tallahassee, Florida; and New Orleans, Louisianaβ€”two sets of conflicting electors met and voted so that the US Congress received two sets of conflicting electoral votes. At this point, Tilden had 184 electoral votes while Hayes had 165 with 20 votes still disputed.

 

The Constitution stipulates that the electoral votes be directed to the President of the Senate who was Republican Thomas W. Ferry. Although Republicans argued that he had the right to decide which votes to count, Democrats disagreed and argued that the Democratic majority in Congress should decide. A compromise was reached, and on January 29, 1877, the Electoral Commission Act established a commission of five senators (three Republicans, two Democrats), five representatives (three Democrats, two Republicans), and five Supreme Court justices (two Republicans, two Democrats, and one independent) to decide which votes to count and resolve the dispute. However, the independent Supreme Court justice refused to serve on the commission and was replaced by a Republican justice.

Although Hayes did not initially support the commission, he changed his mind because it would enhance the legitimacy of the eventual winner. The commission voted 8 to 7 to award the electoral votes from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana (and one from Oregon) to Hayes. However, Democratic members of Congress threatened to prevent the count of electoral votes and delay the resolution of the election with frequent adjournments and filibusters. With the threat of delay, Democrats hoped to win some concessions from Republicans.

I think that was the fly in the ointment. HOW big….and even with "knowing" there's zero way to predict ALL possible outcomes.
