French and Israeli police have dismantled a criminal network that is believed to have swindled France out of 12 million euro (US$14.32 million) in COVID-19 unemployment benefits, Europol said in a statement on Wednesday.

 

Six people have been detained in France on suspicion of having employed 3,600 shell companies to file claims for government aid aimed at assisting businesses in continuing to pay their employees during the lockdown amidst the pandemic.

A North Carolina man who was previously involved in a boy scout was arrested for a sex crime involving a minor, and police said he may have targeted children through the organization for more than 40 years.

Once again, Western think tanks are disrupting international harmony and spreading fear and panic in order to serve the globalist agenda. In a recent report, RAND Corporation, one of the largest American think tanks, stated that NATO nations would be vulnerable to Russian nuclear power in an eventual armed conflict against Russia on European soil. The text approaches the topic with unfounded alarmism about the possibility of a nuclear conflict, which only tends to increase anti-Russian hysteria in the West.

 

In its latest report, entitled β€œCompeting with Russia Militarily Implications of Conventional and Nuclear Conflicts,” RAND Corporation presents a terrible future for Europe and the entire West. The four authors of the report (Clint Reach, Edward Geist, Abby Doll and Joe Cheravitch) believe that NATO currently lacks sufficient power to prevent Russia from starting a nuclear escalation in Europe. The authors see tensions in the Baltic region as a possible starting point for a conflict with Russia and emphasize the weaknesses of the West as a problem to be corrected in order to ensure European security.

 

The authors’ main argument is to remember that Russian military doctrine guarantees the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the event of a response to a foreign attack or threat to the existence of the Russian State. This military orientation was taken in 2010 and later reaffirmed by President Putin in 2018 and consists of nothing more than the possibility of using nuclear weapons as a last possibility. However, Western analysts consider this authorization obscure and uncertain, without details on when the Russian government’s use of nuclear force would be β€œlegitimate”. For the RAND Corporation, there is no clear definition of what would be a β€œthreat to the existence of the Russian state”, which creates a nuclear instability.

 

Regardless of any legal aspect of when the Russian government would or would not be allowed to use nuclear weapons, the central point when we address this issue is the strategic value. In fact, no country in the world currently plans to use nuclear weapons. A nuclear war could mean the end of the entire planet. It is not by chance that the practice of war has become a set of complex actions, such as hybrid warfare, proxy confrontation, intelligence operations, among others. War as it was practiced in the past is currently unfeasible and all governments in the world know this and take this into account when formulating their strategies in foreign policy. The value of nuclear weapons is in their ability to guarantee security to the state that possesses them, not in their actual use. The nation that possesses nuclear weapons has a guarantee of security and territorial inviolability – not an instrument of attack.

 

However, perhaps the objective of the RAND Corporation is not exactly to point out scenarios and possibilities, but just to speculate the worst-case-scenario for the West and thus justify any measures by the Western governments to avoid this catastrophic future. The logic of American think tanks seems increasingly to be one of producing material with pre-appointed conclusions. The role of consultants is simply to write anything that justifies increased aggressiveness in foreign policy as a way of β€œimproving Western defense.”

Oakland 'Defunds' $17 Million From Police Budget

 

The Oakland City Council approved a budget on June 24 that will redirect $17.4 million from its police department to other programs over the course of two years.

 

The city council voted 7–2 to adopt the plan that would cut $17 million from the police department and direct the funds instead to a violence prevention program, according to CBSN Bay Area. The council’s website was not yet updated with the vote tally on Sunday morning.

 

The funding diversion was approved amid a surge in violent crimes in the area, including a mass shooting at Lake Merritt the weekend before the vote.

 

The city’s mayor, Libby Schaaf, opposed stripping funds from the police department.

 

β€œUnfortunately, it [the budget] also cuts 50 police officers who respond to Oaklanders’ 911 calls and enforce traffic safety. It also cuts much-needed future academies, which will significantly reduce police staffing and delay response to Oaklanders in their time of crisis,” Schaaf said in a statement, according to CBSN. β€œIt will force our officers to work even more overtime shifts, which are expensive and unsafe for officers and residents alike.”

 

β€œI believe that until we have proven alternatives, we cannot destroy Oakland’s current public safety system at a time when we are losing so many to gun violence,” the mayor said.

 

The Oakland Police Officers Association (OPOA) supported funding the violence prevention program, but not at the cost of cutting funds from the police.

 

β€œThe two no votes are from council members in districts that are most impacted by violent crime. The message they’re saying is β€˜we may support your programs but we do not want less public safety at a time of skyrocketing violent crime,’” OPOA President Barry Donelan told CBSN.

 

According to Donelan, the $17 million cut means 50 vacant police officer positions will go unfilled, reducing response times to 911 calls.

 

Defund-the-police activists lauded the move.

 

β€œThis historic budget ensures a comprehensive audit of the Oakland Police Department and a thorough examination of positions that could be civilianized, moved out of OPD, or a combination of the two,” the Anti Police-Terror Project said in a statement.

 

The $17 million from the police department will go to the Department of Violence Prevention, which hires β€œviolence interrupters” and β€œcommunity ambassadors” with the intent of preventing violence.

 

β€œWe can make adjustments if we need to but, right now, we have to focus on our violence prevention, affordable housing, our homeless populations and that’s what this budget helps us move forward and do,” council member Dan Kalb said, according to CBSN.

Boat carrying 20 dead people found floating off Grand Turk island

 

A boat with 20 dead people aboard was found about a mile off Grand Turk island last week, authorities announced Sunday.

 

The small vessel was found Thursday by fishermen who alerted police.

 

Takara Bain, a communications officer with the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, said investigators had ruled out foul play but are still working to determine how the deaths occurred.

 

The small boat appears to have arrived from outside the Caribbean, according to Police Commissioner Trevor Botting.

 

Botting added that authorities do not believe the boat’s destination was the Turks and Caicos.

Michigan lawmaker introducing bill to require election audit

 

Lansing β€” The push for a new audit of Michigan's 2020 election received a boost Tuesday from a Republican representative who introduced a bill to require a review of the vote, the first such proposal to be filed this year in the battleground state's Legislature.

 

The bill by Rep. Steve Carra, R-Three Rivers, would create a bipartisan board to hire an outside group to conduct the audit, examining 10% of the precincts in each of Michigan's 83 counties and 20% of the precincts in Detroit, the state's largest city and a Democratic stronghold.

 

Carra's bill doesn't specifically mention Detroit but says the outside group "must randomly select at least 20% of the election precincts in each city with a population of more than 500,000." The only city that meets that criteria in Michigan is Detroit.

Arizona GOP Lawmakers Vote to Strip Election Lawsuit Power From Secretary of State Katie Hobbs

Arizona’s Republican-controlled legislature moved to strip power from Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in election-related lawsuits, handing that power instead to the attorney general’s office.

 

The measure, which was contained within a budget reconciliation bill (pdf), seeks to stop Hobbs, a Democrat, from playing a role in lawsuits related to state election rules while giving the attorney general’s office β€œsole authority” to defend Arizona election laws. The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. Doug Ducey, who has not signaled opposition to it.

 

The bill’s language regarding curtailing Hobbs’s power is β€œnecessary to ensure the faithful defense of the State’s election integrity laws and to eliminate confusion created by the Secretary of State about who speaks for Arizona in court,” Katie Conner, spokeswoman for Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich, told the Arizona Mirror. His office also accused Hobbs of filing β€œpolitically motivated bar complaints against” his office’s lawyers to β€œtarget their professional standing and reputation.”

 

The version of the measure that passed on the night of June 24 says the β€œattorney general has sole authority in all election litigation to direct the defense of election laws, to appeal or petition any decision, and to intervene on behalf of this state at any stage” until Jan. 2, 2023, which is when Hobbs’s term ends.

 

The bill would also bar the attorney general’s office from providing legal advice or representing the secretary of state. Hobbs also cannot use public funds to hire lawyers relating to election litigation, and additionally limits her to hiring one full-time legal adviser.

 

Hobbs, who has frequently criticized the ongoing audit of Maricopa County’s 2020 election results, decried the passage of the bill late last week and accused Republicans of retaliating against her β€œbecause they did not like the outcome of the Presidential Election,” according to a statement released by her office.

 

Meanwhile, Democrats in the legislature echoed her statement, with state Sen. Lisa Otondo calling the bill a β€œpower grab.”

 

β€œI really believe this is not about policy, but about politics,” Otondo said during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing last week.

 

But Republicans last week said Hobbs’s move to file a bar complaint (pdf) against Brnovich and other top attorneys in his office had crossed the line. In the complaint filed last year, Hobbs alleged that Brnovich and his attorneys violated rules of ethical conduct relating to several election law cases in which the attorney general represented the secretary of state’s office.

 

β€œI don’t know what’s more political than the secretary of state submitting bar charges against the entire upper echelon of the AG’s Office,” said state Sen. Vince Leach, a Republican, according to the Arizona Mirror. β€œI would say the unprecedented attack on our attorney general, his chief deputy, and many high-level attorneys is uncalled for.”

 

Hobbs is currently running for governor of Arizona, while Brnovich is running for Senate.

Facebook Soars Past $1 Trillion Market Cap After District Judge Dismisses FTC's Anti-Trust Case

 

Facebook stock soared to a new record high after a District judge dismissed two antitrust cases filed by the federal government and a coalition of states.

 

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington on Monday granted Facebook’s request to dismiss the complaints filed last year by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general led by New York’s Letitia James.

 

According to Boasberg's opinion, the FTC didn't offer enough details to show that Facebook has a monopoly for social networking services.

 

As Bloomberg notes, with the ruling, Facebook has escaped the most significant regulatory threat to its business to emerge out of the wider crackdown on U.S. technology giants. The decision also delivers a blow to the FTC and the states, which claimed Facebook violated antitrust laws by buying photo-sharing app Instagram and messaging service WhatsApp in order to cut off emerging competitive threats and protect its monopoly.

 

Boasberg’s decision to toss the Facebook complaints shows the hurdles U.S. antitrust enforcers face in trying to take on the internet giants. Officials on their own can’t break up companies or impose other remedies, but instead must persuade judges to take action. The process can take years.

Felix Stater, President Trump’s former partner at one of his New York properties, will testify before the committee on March 14th.

 

Much like Michael Cohen, who lied and flipped on Trump for his own benefit, Stater is a known liar.

 

Stater’s deception is connected to Loretta Lynch, who had been found out for running a secret docket for years in January of 2015.

 

Former federal prosecutor Sidney Powell looked into the secret docket and asked the Supreme Court to review the case involving Loretta Lynch, her predecessors, and her prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York.

 

Powell wrote:

 

β€œβ€¦ courageous lawyers are asking the Supreme Court to review a case that reveals how Ms. Lynch, her predecessors, and her prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York put cases on a secret docket that has allowed admitted criminals to walk free, deprived their victims of millions of dollars of restitution required under the law, and enabled the criminals to commit more crimes against the unsuspecting public.”

 

Powell further explained the major ethical issues with allowing prosecutors to go on in this lawlessness with no accountability.

 

β€œAt stake is far more than the issue of restitution of hundreds of millions of stolen dollars. There is a fundamental failure of the Department of Justice to protect innocent citizens from known criminals in a massive secret star-chamber for which there is no review or means of accountability. It is more government lawlessness and making its own rules as it goesβ€” an unsupervised β€˜cooperator game’ at immeasurable cost to justice, faith and trust in the fairness of our system.”

 

The case involving Loretta Lynch, while she was under consideration to become Attorney General, was entered as Palmer v. John Doe, #14-676.

 

The defendant was Felix Stater, one of the names on Lynch’s secret docket.

 

Paul Cassell, a law professor at the University of Utah explained what Loretta Lynch was doing by keeping a secret docket and how it helped Felix Stater:

 

β€œThe U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, never told victims in a major stock fraud case that a culprit [Felix Sater] had been sentenced β€” denying them a chance to seek restitution of some $40 million in losses.”

 

Mr. Cassell said to a House Judiciary Committee Panel in a written statement in 2013 that the practice of using secretive sentencing procedures to reward the criminals who cooperate with them violates the Crime Victims Restitution Act.

 

β€œEvery day that the office withholds notice from the victims in this case about the continuing proceedings that are occurring in this case is a day in which the office is violating the CVRA,” he wrote.

 

The Judiciary Committee admitted that they never followed up with Loretta Lynch’s office and in the end she moved on to become Attorney General where we have witnessed the most corrupt Justice Department emerge from.

 

Sidney Powell:

 

The petition [to the Supreme Court] reveals that prosecutors have a terrifying set of double standards and secret dealsβ€”one for β€œcooperators” and one for those who decline to cooperate. The cooperators in the cases on the secret docket are allowed to plead guilty and to go about their lives with virtual immunity for any crimes they continue to commitβ€”and commit them they do. It’s one thing for a prosecutor to make a deal with a cooperator. It’s another thing for the deal to be a complete secret for years that enables the cooperator to resume his criminal conductβ€”not only licensed but protected by the government.

Rockets Hit US Military Base in Eastern Syria Day After US Airstrike on Militia - Reports

 

The day after US Air Force airstrikes targeted a militia group on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border, a rocket attack has been reported against a US base in eastern Syria.

 

According to local reports, the base under attack is adjacent to al-Omar oil field in Deir-ez-Zor Governorate, Syria's largest oil field, and at least eight rockets fell on the base. The identity of the attacking force is unknown.

 

Video and photos circulating on social media purport to have captured the bombardment from afar.

 

There have so far not been any indications of US casualties at al-Omar as a result of the attack. US troops have remained in eastern Syria after the defeat of Daesh in support of Kurdish militias, which has denied the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad the ability to exert control over a considerable part of Syrian territory, in which nearly all of the country's petroleum deposits are located.

 

​The incident comes just a day after three US airstrikes rocked the region: two in Iraq and one in Syria allegedly targeted β€œfacilities used by Iran-backed militia groups," the Shiite militias Kata'ib Hezbollah and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada. At least four people were killed. The strikes, authorized by US President Joe Biden, are his second since taking office in January. Another strike in the same area was authorized in February after an Iraqi base in Erbil that houses US troops came under attack. Both sets of strikes have been against militias that are part of the Hashd ash-Shabi (Popular Mobilization Forces), Iraq's paramilitary corps established in 2014 to fight Daesh.

How The Voting Rights Act Lets Biden’s DOJ Insist Georgia’s Photo ID Requirement Is Racist

 

For each of the challenged provisions, DOJ's complaint alleges black voters are burdened more than white voters in Georgia's new voting law.

 

On Friday, the Biden administration filed suit against Georgia, challenging numerous aspects of the state’s Election Integrity Act of 2021. While many of the allegations contained in the nearly 50-page complaint struck a surreal chord, assessing the merits (or lack thereof) of the lawsuit requires an understanding of the Voting Rights Act. Here’s your lawsplainer.

 

Last week, the Biden administration, through the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, filed a one-count complaint against the state of Georgia, the Georgia State Election Board, and Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, pursuant to Sections 2 and 12(d) of the Voting Rights Act.

 

The latter provision, Section 12(d), authorizes the attorney general of the United States to file a civil lawsuit against states and local election officials for alleged violations of the substantive provisions of the Voting Rights Act, such as Section 2. Further, under the Voting Rights Act, the federal government may seek injunctive relief to block voting laws from taking effect.

 

Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act currently prohibits any β€œstandard, practice, or procedure” that β€œresults in a denial or abridgment of the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.” The β€œresults in” language here proves key, because when Congress first passed the law in 1965, Section 2 prohibited only a β€œstandard, practice, or procedure” β€œto deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.”

 

As originally drafted, then, the Voting Rights Act only prohibited intentional discrimination. However, following the Supreme Court’s decision in City of Mobile v. Bolden, wherein the high court held that Section 2 only bars β€œthe purposefully discriminatory denial or abridgment by the government of the freedom to vote” on account of race or color, Congress amended the language of Section 2 to prohibit practices that β€œresult[]” in the β€œdenial or abridgment” of the right to vote.

Clarence Thomas says federal pot laws β€˜may no longer be necessary’

Conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Monday issued a blistering dissent arguing that federal marijuana prohibition may no longer make sense.

Although the dissent doesn’t immediately change anything, it could become significant if its reasoning inspires lower-level judges to strike down laws that make marijuana illegal.

Thomas wrote that tolerance for state-level pot legalization created a β€œhalf-in, half-out regime” and a β€œcontradictory and unstable state of affairs” that β€œstrains basic principles of federalism and conceals traps for the unwary.”

Thomas attached his opinion to a court case dealing with whether a medical marijuana dispensary in Colorado, Standing Akimbo Medical Dispensary, could deduct business expenses before paying federal taxes. State-legal pot companies can’t deduct expenses because the drug remains federally illegal.

Thomas wrote, however, that tolerance for state-level pot legalization means that β€œ[a] prohibition on intrastate use or cultivation of marijuana may no longer be necessary or proper to support the Federal Government’s piecemeal approach.”

The other eight justices didn’t justify their decision to turn down the case, leaving a lower court ruling against the business in place. But Thomas broadly attacked the β€œdisjuncture” on federal policy beyond the tax dispute.

β€œMany marijuana-related businesses operate entirely in cash because federal law prohibits certain financial institutions from knowingly accepting deposits from or providing other bank services to businesses that violate federal law. Cash-based operations are understandably enticing to burglars and robbers,” Thomas wrote.

β€œBut, if marijuana-related businesses, in recognition of this, hire armed guards for protection, the owners and the guards might run afoul of a federal law that imposes harsh penalties for using a firearm in furtherance of a β€˜drug trafficking crime.’ A marijuana user similarly can find himself a federal felon if he just possesses a firearm. Or petitioners and similar businesses may find themselves on the wrong side of a civil suit under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.”

Since 2012, 18 states, two US territories and Washington, DC, have legalized recreational pot use and voters in a 19th state β€” South Dakota β€” voted for legalization, but the referendum is tied up in court.

The Arizona Audit started to pack up tables and vacate the coliseum floor this weekend but it appears that the audit team is still performing quality control checks and thoroughly rechecking their evidence.

Senate leader Karen Fann and audit officials are expected to release a statement as early as this week.

 

The Gateway Pundit reported that Karen Fann would not be releasing a preliminary report on Monday but that does not look likely at this point.

The audit team continues to wrap up and prepare their evacuation from the coliseum by Wednesday.

 

Before leaving and returning the evidence, auditors are still performing quality control and a handful of extra checks to ensure their data is accurate.

 

Karen Fann insists that they are not in a rush to release any information. The forensic audit is about accuracy.

 

Volunteers are checking to ensure that the totals are correct with volunteer observers providing overwatch for each counter.

 

As you can see, pallets of boxes have been moved to one side of the stadium and are organized in numerical order. The pallets have also been organized in the same fashion they were delivered, with the same boxes.

 

We did not receive a preliminary statement today on the accuracy of certified election results. The senate is currently occupied with hearings on the floor, attempting to pass election integrity bills and a conservative budget.

 

If the results showed an accurate election, they would likely make an announcement today. The audit team appears to be reviewing their work until the very end to guarantee that they have concrete evidence in court.

 

Christina said that it would be easy for them to deliver a report that says the election was accurate but not accurate is a harder statement. She does hope to see something from the Senate early this week.

 

Everything will be moved out by Wednesday.

 

The forensic analysis report is also expected to come out in early August. They will check to see if there were any fraudulent ballots cast, switching of votes, deleted databases.

 

Another pattern to watch out for is how many ballots were only filled in with a vote for president and no down-ballot races. If there were thousands of ballots with a vote for only President, that could indicate fraud.

Hopefully, early this week we will have a statement from the Arizona Senate. It looks like they are preparing to make history with this extensive forensic audit of the Maricopa County ballots.

It seems that no one really knew how bad Holder and Lynch were until now. It has been discovered that some of the insane laws that are being changed in some states to make life easier for criminals (and worse for law-abiding citizens) were actually pushed thanks to the Department of Justice under Obama.

A family of WWE lovers has gone viral for putting on a wrestling match to announce the gender of an unnamed couple’s baby.

The match was between β€œTeam Boy” and β€œTeam Girl,” where two shirtless males β€” one wearing a pink tutu β€” wrestled in a makeshift backyard ring, surrounded by presumed friends and family.

β€œThis match could be won by pin-fall or submission,” a third male, acting as the referee, said before the fight. He warned both opponents he wanted β€œa good clean match” and β€œnothing dirty.”

The contest lasted nearly two minutes and included renditions of WWE moves, including the famous β€œDDT” and β€œWall of Jericho” β€” initially created by WWE icon Chris Jericho.

In true WWE-fashion, a spectator emerged from the crowd and hit the Team Boy wrestler with a steel chair. He infiltrated the match after blue put pink in the β€œWalls of Jericho,” which left pink struggling to grab the ropes.

CNN staff are furious after the husband of their top news chief was nominated for US ambassador to Israel β€” claiming the move is a conflict of interest, The Post is told.

Tom Nides, 60, was nominated to the Middle East role by President Biden earlier this month, the White House announced.

But the nomination has left more than a few eyebrows raised over at CNN as Nides is married to Virginia Moseley, CNN’s β€œpowerhouse” senior vice president of newsgathering in the US.

β€œPeople are mad, they see it as a big conflict of interest, even if Virginia works in domestic news, this all still plays into domestic politics and deals closely with Biden’s administration,” a network source told The Post.

β€œIt has conflict of interest written all over it.”

Nides is currently the managing director and vice chairman of Morgan Stanley. He is expected to make the move to Israel by himself, while Moseley stays in New York at CNN headquarters.

The couple has two adult children, daughter Taylor, 31, and 26-year-old son Max.

Mosely, 59, is described by those at the network as β€œthe powerhouse under Jeff Zucker,” while Nides previously served as deputy secretary of state for management and resources under Hillary Clinton from 2011 to 2013. He was also awarded the secretary of state’s Distinguished Service Award in January 2013.

Asked about the issue, a CNN spokesperson said: β€œVirginia Moseley oversees domestic newsgathering and if there is ever any question about a Middle East story becoming a domestic newsgathering event she will recuse herself from covering it.”

The White House declined to comment as government sources said it was for CNN to work out. Nides could not immediately be reached for comment.

Aaron Keyak, who served as a Biden-Harris transition official and has been in regular contact with Nides, told the Jerusalem Post: β€œHe speaks with the authority of [someone with] extensive private and public sector experience … He’s trusted by this administration and speaks with the authority of the president, which might be the most important characteristic the ambassador has, especially dealing with leaders in a tough region.”

Last week’s deadly Florida condo collapse may have started at the base of the building, engineers have said according to reports.

β€œIt does appear to start either at or very near the bottom of the structure,” consulting engineer Donald O. Dusenberry told the New York Times, after watching video footage of the 12-story Champlain Towers South Condo collapsing in Surfside on Thursday morning. β€œIt’s not like there’s a failure high and it pancaked down.”

Dusenberry β€” who has investigated other building collapses β€” told the outlet that the way the building went down suggests there could be an issue with foundation of the building β€” such as β€œcorrosion or other damage at a lower level.” On the other hand, β€œyou certainly can’t rule out a design or construction error that has survived for 40 years,” the engineer said.

Another expert said the columns in the underground parking lot could be the culprit of the collapse, the Times reported.

β€œThe primary purpose of all the columns in the basement is to hold the structure up in the air,” said University of Toronto professor of structural engineering Evan Bentz. β€œBecause the structure stopped being held up in the air, the simplest explanation is that the columns in the basement ceased to function.”

The theory that the collapse started at the bottom could also be bolstered by one missing resident’s call to her husband moments before the building went down.

Cassie Stratton, 40, told her husband Mike Stratton on a call that she saw a sinkhole where the pool had been and that she felt the building shaking, the Miami Herald reported. A moment later, Stratton’s line went dead, the husband told the outlet.

Structural engineer Jason Borden β€” who had inspected the tower in 2020 β€” told CNN that the pool sinkhole β€œdefinitely” could have contributed to the collapse.

Borden said during the inspection, he’d seen cracks in the building facade, on the balconies and in the garage and plaza of the building. But Borden noted that that kind of deterioration was normal to see in his line of work and that it hadn’t alarmed him.

On Monday morning, officials confirmed that the death toll had risen to ten while another 151 people are still unaccounted for.

New York State Police reject outside help with 1985 Finger Lakes cold case homicide

 

Finger Lakes, N.Y. β€” Phyllis O'Connell vividly remembers the moment her husband called her from the Finger Lakes community of Ovid to break the news police had found their daughter Kristen's body in a cornfield. Her heart felt like it was pounding out of her chest. That was August of 1985. She was found by local firefighters who aided in the search after she was reported missing two days before. Since then, there has been no arrest. The case remains unsolved.

 

"I think there are people up there who know what happened and are afraid to come forward," said Phyllis O'Connell. "I believe people are scared."

 

The O'Connell's make their home in Minnesota. That's where Kristin grew up. She flew from Minneapolis to New York State that summer for a visit with a young man she met while on spring break in Florida.

 

Phyllis O'Connell recalls how her friends back were stunned because Kristin was such a caring young woman. "They all just couldn’t believe anyone would try to kill Kristen," O'Connell said of Kristen's friends after her murder. " Anybody who ever knew her would never kill her."

 

There have been ups and downs for the investigation over the years. Phyllis O'Connell has made past pleas for help. A few years ago two men came forward to say they did not have anything to do with her death, but they felt like they were being pressured by police.

 

The O'Connell's have hired private investigators and had retired State Police investigators assist in trying to uncover the truth. But, now the family has a new offer for help from a true-crime investigative documentary series. Producers of the documentary have assembled a cold case investigative unit to work alongside New York State Police.

 

We’re offering them a fresh set of eyes," said documentary producer Christopher Pavlick of The Hammer Group. "A forensic lab that’s available to test all the physical evidence and in Kristin’s case at no cost to the state of New York."

 

Producers and the O'Connell family face a problem. New York State Police and the Seneca County District Attorney's office have declined the offer for help. The producers say the police rejected the offer for two reasons. State Police claim it's against policy for outsiders to be brought into the investigation. Investigators have also questioned whether the lab that would be used to test evidence is not properly licensed in New York. Christopher Pavlick has provided them evidence the lab is certified.

 

"We have these great investigators led by a former FBI leader of their violent apprehension program, a former interrogator, former profiler," said Pavlick. "Let these guys come in and see what they can do to help."
