On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s β€œAmerica’s Newsroom,” Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez said β€œthere is no progress being made” on the border and β€œit’s an unsecured border. It’s out of control right now, and if this continues, it’s going to be even more out of control.”

 

Host Trace Gallagher stated, β€œ[E]xcept for getting some of these unaccompanied minors into facilities faster, there [have] been very few signs of progress, lieutenant.”

 

Olivarez responded, β€œThat is correct. So, we see it every day, day in and day out, our men and women of law enforcement who work the front lines day in and day out, who work extended hours away from their families, they see it every single day. And I can tell you right now, there is no progress being made.”

 

Olivarez later added, β€œTrace, right now, as it is right now, it’s an unsecured border. It’s out of control right now, and if this continues, it’s going to be even more out of control.”

GETTR Receives 1.2K Strange Chinese Reviews Amid Claim Platform Posts Anti-CCP Posts To Profiles Without Permission

GETTR, the new social media app from ex-Trump advisor Jason Miller, has received around 1,200 strange reviews from Chinese linked accounts, amid reports the app posts anti-CCP propaganda to user profiles without their permission.

 

A beta version of GETTR was launched on Thursday, with its description on the App Store declaring that it is β€œa non-bias social network for people all over the world” that β€œtried the best to provide best software quality to the users, allow anyone to express their opinion freely.” Highlighted features included β€œpost, repost, comments,” β€œmulti-language support” and β€œnews sharing.” In an interview with Fox News, Miller claimed that GETTR has β€œsuperior technology” to their competitors, seemingly referring to alt tech alternatives like Gab, Spreely and Parler as being β€œnot as good.”

 

However, the strangely-phrased, seemingly broken English language used in the App Store descriptions may be part of a larger phenomenon, National File can reveal. With most timelines declaring that it was β€œmid-June” that the GETTR app was first placed in the App Store, the vast majority of the over 1,200 reviews date from 16th to 17th June, and apart from a couple, all rate the app 5 stars.

 

Additionally, many of the reviews for GETTR are either once again in broken English or in Chinese. Anti-CCP sentiment is strong among the comments, even those written in clearer English. Some reviews include Chinese words transliterated into Latin text and randomly included within the review itself, while others don’t even seem to mention GETTR at all. Examples of the stranger reviews include:

β€œThe real media is geetr. Finally, we have found a media that dares to tell the truth and challenge evil. I hope she can light up this dark night like a torch.”

β€œTake down the ccp. Add oil.”

β€œGood. Good Good Good Good Good Good Good.”

 

Following discovery of the reviews, National File also became aware of reports that new users who had just signed up to GETTR had appearing in their personal profile that they didn’t post themselves. One example posted to Twitter involved an anti-CCP post that seemingly originated from a Chinese account.

The image posted to the GETTR account was a quote from Guo Wengui, also known as Miles Guo, a Chinese billionaire who fled China in 2015 after he was set to be arrested for various charges including corruption, which he alleged were simply a witchhunt. Guo later became a whistleblower after fleeing China. An organization, launched by Guo and Steve Bannon, known as the New Federal State of China, was mentioned multiple times in many of the seemingly out of place GETTR reviews posted to the App Store, with a plethora of early posts on the site seemingly from pro-Guo Chinese accounts. Brazil Pulls Out of US$324 Million Covaxin Contract Amid Cries of Corruption

 

Brazil will suspend its US$324 million contract for India’s Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine upon the recommendation of Brazil’s Comptroller General office (CGU), Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said Tuesday.

 

β€œAccording to preliminary analyses, there are no irregularities in the contract but, for compliance, the health ministry opted to suspend the contract for further analysis,” Queiroga tweeted.

 

The CGU, Brazil’s audit branch, will decide whether to terminate the contract after a complete investigation.

 

Queiroga said the government has not yet paid for the Covaxin vaccine and that the measure will not compromise the pace of vaccine distribution in Brazil.

 

The Covaxin saga has generated public ire and distrust in the government’s vaccination response. Covaxin is not only more expensive than BioNTech Pfizer but is also still unapproved by the World Health Organization (WHO) β€” leaving many to question why the Bolsonaro administration has pursued this particular shot while cheaper, authorized options were on the market.

 

A CGU evaluation of the Covaxin contract obtained by CNN Brasil on Tuesday lists several reasons to be suspicious of the deal, including that the government attempted to make an advance payment outside of the terms laid out in the contract and may have also paid through a third-party company not included in the contract. According to the CGU report, Bharat Biotech also did not meet deadlines for vaccine delivery and did not include a pricing justification in the contract.

 

Allegations of corruption and graft within the Bolsonaro administration have been mounting all week.

 

The contract’s suspension arrives shortly after Monday’s news that Senator Randolfe Rodrigues filed a criminal complaint against Bolsonaro with the country’s highest court, urging an investigation into potential graft in COVID-19 vaccine purchases.

 

Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo also reported on Tuesday that Ministry of Health logistics chief Roberto Ferreira Dias had attempted to negotiate a bribe of a dollar per dose of AstraZeneca’s vaccine to a medical supply company representative. He was dismissed from his post that same day.

 

The same deal is currently being investigated by Brazil’s federal prosecutor’s office after prosecutors noted the high price per dose and that ministry officials apparently disregarded a history of alleged irregular government contracts with Bharat Biotech representatives.

A "Mary-Sue story" can be described as a wish-fulfilment fantasy on the part of the author, in which a thinly disguised avatar of the author is placed into the story, a character too good to be true. Some authors of Mary-Sue stories therefore defend themselves with a cry of "MariSu doesn't resemble me at all!". However, since a variation on the Mary-Sue is when a canon character is made into someone too good to be true, (these are given names such as Willow-Sue or Mulder-Sue etc) then one can see that the emphasis of Mary-Sue's critics is not so much on the self-insertion as on the wish-fulfilment. (That's why I like to use a separate term, "self-insertion", for stories in which the Author appears as a character – because while these can often be Mary-Sue stories as well, it is actually possible to write self-insertion stories that aren't Mary-Sues, and I'd rather have a separate term than confuse the issue by calling such things "good Mary-Sue stories".)

 

Mary-Sue and Romance

There are some fandoms where, as soon as an original female character appears, she is accused of being a Mary-Sue. Others restrain the accusation until the female in question is set up as a romantic interest of one of Our Heroes. Why is the question of romance such a sensitive one? Is it that most romances are badly written, or is there a significant difference between the introduction of an original character as opposed to a romance between existing canon characters?

 

I think the last is probably an important factor. Part of it is plausibility. If a character is already there, then the Hero in question will have a better chance of falling in love with her, simply because they're already interacting and getting to know each other. Secondly, a canon character (whether regular or recurring) already has a reason for being there, a reason other than being a love-interest. They already have a character of their own (even if it's very sketchy) and therefore have a better chance of being of interest for their own sake.

 

An author who wants to introduce an original female character for the purposes of romance has a number of hurdles to overcome, temptations to avoid. If her sole, or main purpose in being in the story is as a romantic object for Our Hero, then the temptation will be to try to prove to the reader that she is "good enough" for Our Hero, and from there it's a small step to "too perfect" and Mary-Suism. Even if the author isn't trying to prove anything, there may still be a Babe-of-the-Week effect, making the character a love-object and not a person.

 

Maybe it's just personal taste here, but I've always found romances more interesting if they developed over a longer period rather than quickly. Which, for fanfic, could mean over the course of more than one story. Which means the lady in question needs to have some other purpose to enable her to hang around with Our Hero.

 

Mary-Sue and Perfection

Whether or not a Mary-Sue is romantically involved, one of her most obvious characteristics is that she is too good to be true, unbelievably perfect, and often having other signs of "specialness", such as an exotic name. However, it isn't so much the absolute signs of her amazing good traits, so much as how much better she is than those around her. It's not necessarily a problem for an original character to be a superhero if she's surrounded by other superheros. Even a character being somewhat extraordinary isn't always a problem after all, we're often more interested in extraordinary characters than dull, normal ones, especially when heroics are required. After all, many canon characters are extraordinary, that's why we like them. But that can also be the first step into turning them into Canon-Sues.

Sometimes the reaction of an author can actually confirm the Mary-Sueness of a character, when the question is raised as to whether the character is "too perfect". The tell-tale sign is when the author starts listing "flaws" in the character which are meant to be examples of why the character isn't perfect, and all the supposed "flaws" are actually positive character traits. The example which brought this home to me was the quote from Jean Auel, the author of the "Earth's Children" series starring the extraordinary heroine, Ayla, and she said words to the effect that Ayla had flaws, such as she tried too hard. Huh? That's supposed to be a flaw? It sounds more like a virtue to me.

 

Of course, it's true that every virtue hides a vice, and every vice a virtue; that every strength is a weakness – but people don't tend to remember that. A well-rounded character is going to have weaknesses that arise out of hir strengths; such as a strong will being linked with stubbornness, or the gift of the gab which can talk its way out of a bad situation can also be used to talk its way into big trouble as well. Or even that one man's thief could be another man's security expert.

 

Perhaps it isn't so much the desire for "specialness" as a desire to put the character on a pedestal. Unfortunately, the only things that go well on pedestals are stiff statues.

 

The Rule of Three and the Rule of One

Let's just divert here for a moment and take a look at two rules of writing, which I call the Rule of Three and the Rule of One. The Rule of Three was expressed by Lewis Carroll in "The Hunting of the Snark": "If I say it three times it is true." In writing, if you want something to be noticed, if you want something to be established as commonplace, then make it appear (or be mentioned) three times. That is the Rule of Three.

 

The Rule of One is its opposite: it is about unlikely happenings. Unlikely happenings are allowed to happen just once. If they happen more than once, then they aren't unlikely – because if they happen three times, it's commonplace (remember the Rule of Three). Unfortunately, TPTB (especially those writing serial television) don't seem to be aware of this, and it becomes annoying. One long-lost love is acceptable. More than one is not. One alien takeover is a fluke; more than one is a running gag. One case of one's love being taken over by aliens is tragic; having it happen again to a conveniently-unearthed Old Flame is a farce.

 

Mary-Sue the Collapsar

So, let us reconsider Mary-Sue. It isn't so much that she's a self-insertion, nor that she may be a romantic interest, nor even that she may be extraordinarily special that is the real problem with Mary-Sue. No, the problem with Mary-Sue is that she distorts all of space-time around her, like the gravity field of a collapsar. Nothing escapes her influence, the whole universe is dragged into her ego-field. What do I mean by that?

 

The true evil of a Mary-Sue is the effect she has on the characters around her. Which is why one can have things like Willow-Sues as well as original Mary-Sues. With a full-blown 'Sue, normally strong characters become weak and helpless, normally bright characters become dumb, and marginally annoying characters become downright evil. Probabilities bend in the vicinity of a 'Sue; unlikely things happen just to promote her welfare and/or to demonstrate her specialness. Rule of One happenings are commonplace.

Most insidious of all, the attention of all characters, from the high to the low, from the regulars to the extras, is drawn inexorably towards the 'Sue. They either love her or hate her (though hating her is a Sign Of Evilness, of course). Even if they don't adore her, they still remark upon her specialness – even if they were characters who normally couldn't care less.

 

The reason this is insidious is because even experienced authors can fall into the attention trap, if the main character or guest-character is someone they admire a great deal. I fell into this once with a Highlander crossover, where I suddenly realized that the story consisted only of the other characters remarking on how unusual Adam Pierson was – oops! I ripped up the story when I realized that.

 

Recovering From Mary-Sueism

So what can one do with a Mary-Sue? Besides rip up the story, that is.

 

Make her less special.

Diffuse the attention.

These things can be done in multiple ways.

 

Resist the urge to explain. Don't tell us anything about her background unless it is required for the plot. It isn't her background that will make her admired, but what she actually does in the story.

Reduce her talents. Only give her special talents that are required for the plot. The more unusual the talent, the more justification and explanation it will need.

Give her peers; give her equals. She may be multi-talented, but she becomes less obnoxious if she isn't unique in having that talent. If she sings, put her in a choir. If she's a superb solo singer, give her other soloists to sing with. If she's an artist, make her one of a group of artists, and not necessarily the best one.

Make her work hard for her gifts. Even if she's talented, to hone that talent takes a lot of practice. It didn't arise out of a vacuum.

One man's exotica is another man's mundanity. Any given "specialness" that she's had all her life will seem ordinary to her, even if she's a princess.

Do not let her solve all the problems or think of all the ideas. Give the other characters a chance to shine too.

Don't opt for an easy-but-improbable solution to a problem. The story will be much better if you overcome difficult problems rather than ignoring them.

Give her flaws that are actually annoying, rather than endearing. Remember that the flip-side of every strength is a weakness.

Allow her to make mistakes. You don't have to make her stupid in order for her to make mistakes; she could be jumping to conclusions on insufficient data, she could be impatient, she could fail to listen to someone she ought to have listened to, etc. Remember, she doesn't know everything, even though you, the author, do.

Reduce the focus on her by adding in a B-plot in which she does not participate.

For some, all this effort is not worth it: they actually want to write a wish-fulfilment fantasy for themselves or their favourite character, or a revenge-fantasy against characters they dislike. These authors don't care if the work is plausible; they just want to indulge their whims. If that is the case, I don't begrudge them writing it… but I would wish that they would put the manuscript in their bottom drawer and not share it with the rest of us.

Russia Now Requires Foreign Social Media Companies To Open In-Country Offices

 

In the continuing saga and standoff between US tech giants and the Russian state, the Kremlin just took a bold, creative step in its long-running efforts to reign in foreign "propagandistic" attempts to both censor official Russian sources and at the same time promote "obscene" content, as its officials have long complained.

 

Russian President Putin on Thursday signed a law that seeks to force major social media companies to open offices on Russian soil if they continue to want their platforms unrestricted inside Russia.

 

"A foreign entity, carrying out activities on the internet in Russia, is obliged to create a branch, open an office or establish a Russian legal entity," the new law reads, according to Reuters.

 

More details of the law were reported in Reuters as follows:

 

Alexander Khinshtein, the head of the information policy and IT committee at the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, said the law applied to internet giants with a daily audience in Russia of at least 500,000 people.

 

The firms must register a personal account on the website of Roskomnadzor, Russia's state communications regulator, he wrote on his Telegram channel. Companies that violate the legislation could face penalties such as advertising bans.

 

This in effect targets at least 20 US-based and other international companies, including Facebook, Google, Twitter, Telegram YouTube, and TikTok - many of which already have multi-million dollar fines against them inside Russia based on allegations they promote and elevate "banned" anti-government activity, including recent pro-Navalny protests dubbed by the state "illegal gatherings".

 

Putin on Wednesday actually addressed the immense power of Silicon Valley during his annual "call-in" telethon which allows citizens to ask questions of the Russian leader directly:

 

"We tell them 'you are distributing child pornography, instructions on how to make Molotov cocktails and suicide, you must remove that'," Putin said.

 

Last Spring the country began throttling Twitter speeds for some of these very issues and lack of compliance to Russian law.

 

While the threat of outright banning some platforms remains, many of the big platforms are so popular among Russians that it's not believed leaders could pull it off politically, given the massive domestic backlash that would ensue. Putin this week emphasized that there's currently no plans to ban social media companies, however, he stressed "they must comply with our laws" and remain available to state authorities "to enable dialogue".

Maxwell wasn't named as one of the co-conspirators and it is in a different state that she is facing sex trafficking charges now.

Clearly, there was both strategic and tactical warnings.

 

The security situation in eastern Libya, particularly Benghazi, was out of control. This was a planned event and explains the massive cover-up.

 

There were numerous hostile acts leading up to the attack on the compound. For example, on April 6, 2012, an attack with improvised explosive devices was conducted on the outer wall of the compound.

 

On May 22, the Benghazi International Red Cross office was hit by two rocket-propelled grenades. On June 1, a car bomb exploded outside the Benghazi hotel where the British ambassador was staying. On June 6, an IED blew a hole in the compound’s perimeter wall. On June 7, Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens requested two mobile security teams for his protection but was denied by the State Department.

Last week, the journal Vaccines, affiliated with the American Society for Virology, published research that estimates every three COVID-19 deaths prevented by vaccination are offset by two deaths "inflicted by vaccination," using Israeli and European data.

 

The papers share a lead author, Harald Walach, a professor in Poznan University of the Medical Sciences' Pediatric Clinic in Poland and University of Witten/Herdecke's psychology department in Germany.

 

"Most of the complaints reported by children" in a Germany-wide register on mask-wearing, including irritability, headache and reluctance to go to school, "can be understood as consequences of elevated carbon dioxide levels in inhaled air," the JAMA Pediatrics paper said. It cited the "dead-space volume of the masks, which collects exhaled carbon dioxide quickly after a short time."

 

In light of "impairments attributable to hypercapnia," or the bloodstream buildup of CO2, policymakers should reconsider requiring children to wear masks, it said.

 

The study passed muster at the University of Witten/Herdecke's ethics board, given that it required each child to wear various masks for a total of 15 minutes, in contrast to the "several hours" they spend masked in school, the trial protocol said.

 

The authors tried out various masks, including KN95 respirators and surgical masks, on 45 healthy children ages 6-17 in southwest Germany. The room was "well ventilated several times" for each experiment, with CO2 content of ambient air kept under 0.1% by volume.

 

The first 3-minute measurement gauged "baseline" unmasked CO2 levels. The next 3-minute intervals were for CO2 content in "joint inhaled and exhaled air," inhaled air only and exhaled air only.

The tube has a plunger with dosage ticks in 50 lb increments and a lock ring. Just turn the lock ring until it's free and move it so that it will dispense double your weight and lock it. Then dispense that and eat it. I was using it for years before COVID, but at a lower less effective dose, so it was old hat to me. Once I doubled the weight, the dose became effective and I got a herx reaction (a good sign, but concerning if you're not expecting it)…even cleared up a very troubling case of Bell's palsy I had given up on. I've got both and gave up on the liquid. It was PITA and the oral would up being SO much easier and at least, if not more effective. Plus transdermal anything is a highly variable route of administration with anything. Consuming the liquid could be very dangerous, not from the IVM which is very safe, but the alcohol carrier is isopropanol IIRC and that will f you up permanently and could cause blindness and bunch of other stuff. I've seen it kill…ugly bidness, that. Stick with the oral, WAY less hassle and much more reliable route. Doesn't taste bad…not great, but not bad.

Columbus, Ohio (July 1, 2021) – By signing legislation last night, Governor Mike DeWine has officially ended Ohio’s sales taxation of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion and coins, enabling the Buckeye State to join Arkansas as the two states having canceled taxation of the monetary metals so far this year.

 

Precious Metals Sales Tax

 

Backed by Reps. Kris Jordan and Riordan McClain, the Sound Money Defense League, Money Metals Exchange, Campaign for Liberty, grassroots activists, and coin dealer representatives, House Bill 110 (the 2022-2023 budget bill) restores the right of Ohio investors, savers, and small businesses to acquire precious metals without being slapped with sales and use taxes.

 

β€œThese efforts are common sense,” said State Representative Jordan. β€œWe should not be taxing money."

 

β€œThis form of double taxation discourages Ohioans from buying precious metals in the state and drives their business elsewhere. Ohio precious metal dealers [can now] better compete with our neighboring states as well as on the online marketplace. This exemption will also allow Ohio to attract coin shows, which generate significant amounts of economic activity,” Jordan explained.

 

The Ohio sales tax exemption goes into effect July 1, 2021.

 

In 2019, Ohio actually repealed the long-standing sales tax exemption for the purchase of precious metals investments. However, the state has now reversed course and reinstated the exemption after small businesses, coin conventions, income tax revenues, and investment activity began exiting the state.

 

Testifying before House and Senate Committees in Ohio during May hearings, Sound Money Defense League Policy Director Jp Cortez explained why 40 states had already removed some or all sales taxes from gold and silver. For example:

 

Taxing precious metals is unfair to certain savers and investors. Gold and silver are held as forms of savings and investment. States do not tax the purchase of stocks, bonds, ETFs, currencies, and other financial instruments, so it makes no sense to tax monetary metals.

Levying sales taxes on precious metals is illogical because gold and silver are inherently held for resale. Sales taxes are typically levied on final consumer goods. Precious metals are inherently held for resale, not β€œconsumption,” making the application of sales taxes on precious metals illogical and especially inappropriate.

Taxing gold and silver harms in-state businesses. It’s a competitive marketplace, so buyers in states with precious-metals sales taxes often take their business to neighboring states that have eliminated or reduced sales tax on precious metals. Investors can easily avoid paying $136.50 in sales taxes, for example, on a $1,950 purchase of a one-ounce gold bar. Therefore, levying sales tax on precious metals harms in-state businesses, who will lose business to out-of-state precious metals dealers. Coin conventions also tend to avoid the sales tax states.

Taxing precious metals is harmful to citizens attempting to protect their assets. Purchasers of precious metals aren’t fat-cat investors. Most who buy physical precious metals do so in small increments as a way of saving money. Precious metals investors are purchasing precious metals to preserve their wealth against the damaging effects of inflation. Inflation especially harms β€œthe little guy” – including pensioners, retirees on fixed incomes, wage-earners, and savers.

 

Cortez hailed Ohio’s move to affirm sound money: β€œOhio has ended the unfair practice of taxing citizens who are simply exchanging one form of money for another. The nine states that still tax the monetary metals are increasingly embarrassing themselves. The national tide has turned decisively against this foolish practice.”

 

Having eliminated sales taxes on the monetary metals, Ohio will rise from dead last in the Sound Money Index to 30th place among the 50 states.

 

Including Ohio, 41 U.S. states now fully or partially exempt gold and silver from state sales taxes.
