Modern monetary theory, known as MMT, erupted suddenly into the public consciousness when it won the attention of high-profile politicians including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and their media admirers. Its central proposition states that the U.S. federal government can and should freely print money to finance a massive spending agenda, with no concern about debt and deficits.

What is MMT? Its advocates have told us in essays, blog posts, videos and tweets what MMT says about this and that, but what is its logic and evidence? As a monetary theorist who is also skeptical of conventional wisdom, I looked forward to a definitive exposition from Stephanie Kelton’s “The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People’s Economy.”

Ms. Kelton, a professor of economics at Stony Brook University and senior economic adviser to Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign, starts with a few correct observations. But when the implications don’t lead to her desired conclusions, her logic, facts and language turn into pretzels.

True, the federal government can spend any amount by simply printing up the needed money (in reality, creating bank reserves). True, our government need never default since it can always print dollars to repay Treasury bonds. But if the government prints up and spends, say, $10 trillion, will that not lead to inflation? Ms. Kelton acknowledges the possibility: “If the government tries to spend too much in an economy that’s already running at full speed, inflation will accelerate.”

So how do we determine if the economy is running at full speed, or full of “slack,” with unemployed people and idle businesses that extra money might put to work without inflation? Ms. Kelton disdains the Federal Reserve’s noninflationary or “natural” unemployment rate measure of slack as a “doctrine that relies on human suffering to fight inflation.” Even the recent 3.5% unemployment is heartlessly too high for her.

“MMT urges us to think of slack more broadly.” OK, but how? She offers only one vaguely concrete suggestion: When evaluating spending bills, “careful analysis of the economy’s . . . slack would guide lawmakers. . . . If the CBO [Congressional Budget Office] and other independent analysts concluded it would risk pushing inflation above some desired inflation rate, then lawmakers could begin to assemble a venue of options to identify the most effective ways to mitigate that risk.” She doesn’t otherwise define slack or even offer a conceptual basis for its measurement. She just supposes that the CBO will somehow figure it out. She doesn't mention that the CBO now calculates a measure, potential GDP, which does not reveal perpetual slack. And she later excoriates the CBO for its deficit hawkishness.

Really her answer is: Don’t worry about it. She simply asserts that “there is always slack in the form of unemployed resources, including labor.”

We’re not talking about a little slack either. Ms. Kelton’s “people’s economy” starts with the full Green New Deal and moves on to a federal job for anyone, free health care, free child care, the immediate cancelation of student debt, free college, “affordable housing for all our people,” national high-speed rail, “expanded Social Security,” “a more robust public retirement system,” “middle-class tax cuts,” and more. How much does this add up to? $20 trillion? $50 trillion? She offers no numbers. How is it vaguely plausible that the U.S. has this much productive capacity lying around going to waste?

White House Supports AG’s Halt to Federal Executions Amid Pressure to End Death Penalty for Good

Attorney General Merrick Garland ordered a temporary halt to the scheduling of federal executions on Thursday amid growing concerns regarding the fair treatment of inmates, with a review underway into the department’s policies and procedures on the matter.

The federal stay on executions is an “important step forward,” and the president supports Attorney General Garland on the matter, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced Friday.

Journal of the American Medical Association study confirms dangerous levels of carbon dioxide under masks

Results

The mean (SD) age of the children was 10.7 (2.6) years (range, 6-17 years), and there were 20 girls and 25 boys. Measurement results are presented in the Table. We checked potential associations with outcome. Only age was associated with carbon dioxide content in inhaled air (y = 1.9867 – 0.0555 × x; r = –0.39; P = .008; Figure). Hence, we added age as a continuous covariate to the model. This revealed an association (partial η2 = 0.43; P < .001). Contrasts showed that this was attributable to the difference between the baseline value and the values of both masks jointly. Contrasts between the 2 types of masks were not significant. We measured means (SDs) between 13 120 (384) and 13 910 (374) ppm of carbon dioxide in inhaled air under surgical and filtering facepiece 2 (FFP2) masks, which is higher than what is already deemed unacceptable by the German Federal Environmental Office by a factor of 6. This was a value reached after 3 minutes of measurement. Children under normal conditions in schools wear such masks for a mean of 270 (interquartile range, 120-390) minutes.3 The Figure shows that the value of the child with the lowest carbon dioxide level was 3-fold greater than the limit of 0.2 % by volume.4 The youngest children had the highest values, with one 7-year-old child’s carbon dioxide level measured at 25 000 ppm.

Discussion

The limitations of the study were its short-term nature in a laboratory-like setting and the fact that children were not occupied during measurements and might have been apprehensive. Most of the complaints reported by children3 can be understood as consequences of elevated carbon dioxide levels in inhaled air. This is because of the dead-space volume of the masks, which collects exhaled carbon dioxide quickly after a short time. This carbon dioxide mixes with fresh air and elevates the carbon dioxide content of inhaled air under the mask, and this was more pronounced in this study for younger children.

This leads in turn to impairments attributable to hypercapnia. A recent review6 concluded that there was ample evidence for adverse effects of wearing such masks. We suggest that decision-makers weigh the hard evidence produced by these experimental measurements accordingly, which suggest that children should not be forced to wear face masks.

The Security State conducts domestic mass surveillance while ignoring waves of unwelcomed immigrants swarming over the border.

Biden’s Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has declared a culture war by a Soviet-style military purge using a fictitious claim of white supremacist extremists and requiring Marxist critical race theory indoctrination. The unchecked Security State will eventually be a more significant threat than foreign adversaries.

Boeing’s chief political lobbyist in Washington DC, Tim Keating, has abruptly left the company.

The Chicago-based airframer did not respond to a request for comment after media reports surfaced on 21 June that Keating, the company’s executive vice president of government operations, was ousted without notice. No reason was given.

In a note to the company’s government affairs employees, chief executive David Calhoun said that chief strategy officer Marc Allen would take on the responsibilities of the role on an interim basis, the reports say.

Attempts to reach Keating were unsuccessful.

According to a Boeing media release dated 1 March 2018, Keating joined the company in 2008 as senior vice-president of government operations and moved to the executive vice-president role in 2018.

He helped the company navigate the crisis following two fatal crashes of the firm’s re-engineered Boeing 737 Max aircraft in 2018 and 2019. Following the accidents, the type was grounded for 20 months before regaining certification in most jurisdictions in November 2020.

Prior to coming to Boeing, Keating worked for Honeywell International and lobbying firm Timmons and Company.He also served in the Clinton administration as special assistant to the President and staff director for White House Legislative Affairs.

On 18 June, the company said that the largest version of the 737 Max family, the 737 Max 10, took its maiden flight in Renton, Washington state. The first flight kicked off the Max 10’s certification programme and Boeing aims to deliver the first -10 in 2023.

The week before last was an especially moving one here in Washington. The Vietnam veterans finally came home once and for all to America's heart. They were welcomed with tears, with pride and with a monument to their great sacrifices. Many of their names, like those of our Republic's greatest citizens, are now engraved in stone in this city that belongs to all of us. On behalf of the nation, let me again thank the Vietnam veterans from the bottom of my heart for their courageous service to America.

Seeing those moving scenes, I know mothers of a new generation must have worried about their children and about peace. And that's what I'd like to talk to you about tonight - the future of our children in a world where peace is made uneasy by the presence of nuclear weapons.

A year ago I said the time was right to move forward on arms control. I outlined several proposals and said nothing would have a higher priority in this Administration. Now, a year later, I want to report on those proposals and on other efforts we're making to insure the safety of our children's future…

The prevention of conflict and the reduction of weapons are the most important public issues of our time. Yet, on no other issue are there more misconceptions and misunderstandings. You, the American people, deserve an explanation from your Government on what our policy is on these issues. Too often the experts have been content to discuss grandiose strategies among themselves, and cloud the public debate in technicalities no one can understand. The result is that many Americans have become frightened and, let me say, fear of the unknown is entirely understandable. To begin, let's go back to what the world was like at the end of World War II. The United States was the only undamaged industrial power in the world. Our military power was at its peak, and we alone had the atomic weapon. But we didn't use this wealth and this power to bully, we used it to rebuild. We raised up the war-ravaged economies, including the economies of those who had fought against us.

At first, the peace of the world was unthreatened, because we alone were left with any real power, and we were using it for the good of our fellow man. Any potential enemy was deterred from aggression because the cost would have far outweighed the gain.

As the Soviets' power grew, we still managed to maintain the peace. The U.S. had established a system of alliances with NATO as the centerpiece. In addition, we grew even more respected as a world leader with a strong economy and deeply held moral values. With our commitment to help shape a better world, the U.S. also pursued and always pursued every diplomatic channel for peace. And for at least 30 years after World War II, the United States still continued to possess a large military advantage over the Soviet Union. Our strength deterred -that is, prevented - aggression against us.

This nation's military objective has always been to maintain peace by preventing war. This is neither a Democratic nor a Republican policy. It's supported by our allies. And most important of all, it's worked for nearly 40 years. Nuclear Deterrence…

'Peace Above All Else'

Earlier I spoke of America's contributions to peace following World War II, of all we did to promote peace and prosperity for our fellow man. Well, we're still those same people. We still seek peace above all else.

''I want to remind our own citizens and those around the world of this tradition of American good will because I am concerned about the effects the nuclear fear is having on our people. The most upsetting letters I receive are from schoolchildren who write to me as a class assignment. It's evident they've discussed the most nightmarish aspects of a nuclear holocaust in their classrooms. Their letters are often full of terror. Well, this should not be so.''

The philosopher Spinoza said, Peace is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. Well, those are the qualities we want our children to inherit, not fear. They must grow up confident if they're to meet the challenges of tomorrow, as we will meet the challenges of today.

I began these remarks speaking of our children. I want to close on the same theme. Our children should not grow up frightened. They should not fear the future. We are working to make it peaceful and free. I believe their future can be the brightest, most exciting of any generation. We must reassure them and let them know that their parents and the leaders of this world are seeking above all else to keep them safe, and at peace. I consider this to be a sacred trust.

My fellow Americans, on this Thanksgiving, when we have so much to be grateful for, let us give special thanks for our peace, our freedom and our good people. I've always believed that this land was set aside in an uncommon way, that a divine plan placed this great continent between the oceans to be found by a people from every corner of the earth who had a special love of faith, freedom and peace. Let us reaffirm America's destiny of goodness and good will. Let us work for peace, and, as we do, let us remember the lines of the famous old hymn, O God of love, O King of peace, make wars throughout the world to cease.

Dutch court approves alleged drug syndicate leader Tse Chi Lop for extradition to Australia

A Dutch court has approved an Australian request to hand over the alleged leader of an Asian drug syndicate who has been compared to Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Tse Chi Lop, a Chinese-born Canadian national, was arrested in January at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at the request of Australian police while in transit from Taiwan to Canada.

The defence said it would appeal, and the matter will be decided by the Dutch Supreme Court.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) claims Mr Tse's organisation dominates the $90 billion-a-year Asia-Pacific drug trade.

A final decision on extradition will be made by the Dutch government.

Mr Tse has denied wrongdoing and contested his arrest, saying the Australian authorities in effect engineered his expulsion from Taiwan to Canada on a flight with a stopover in the Netherlands so that he could be detained there.

The defendant is alleged to have led a drug syndicate that is dominant in the Asia-Pacific crystal methamphetamine trade, which increased fourfold in the five years to 2019, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

According to the AFP, the operation resulted in the arrest of 27 people for importing and trafficking "substantial quantities" of heroin and methamphetamine into Australia in 2013.

Police seized 42 kilograms of drugs and more than $4 million in cash in the operation.

Jeremy Douglas, South-East Asia and Pacific representative for the UN drugs agency UNODC, said in 2019 that Tse Chi Lop is in the league of El Chapo or maybe Pablo Escobar referring to Latin America's most notorious drug lords.

Mr Tse has denied he is a drug kingpin.

CIA Director Makes Secret Visit To Crumbling Bolsonaro Government

Background: Shortly after taking office, Jair Bolsonaro became the first Brazilian leader to visit CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Minneapolis judge orders city to hire more police officers after residents sue over crime rates

A Minneapolis judge has ordered local leaders to ramp up the hiring of police officers in response to a lawsuit from residents claiming the city’s crime rate has only risen since the death of George Floyd.

Hennepin County Judge Jamie Anderson mandated the city council and Mayor Jacob Frey this week to hire 730 sworn officers by June 30, 2022 after it was discovered that the projected number of police officers hired by that time, 669, would not meet the city’s stipulations for the amount of officers needed based on population.

If the 2020 Census shows an uptick in population, more than 730 officers will need to be hired, until the police represent 0.2% of the city’s population.

“It is undisputed that: the crime rate in Minneapolis has increased since the killing of Floyd, one or more Petitioners have suffered injuries from that increase in crime,” Anderson wrote in his decision, referencing the residents who brought the lawsuit in August 2020.

In the summer of 2020, a group of eight residents banded together for the lawsuit and claimed an “exodus” of officers had led to increased crime in the city.

The role of law enforcement in Minneapolis has been a hotly debated topic since Floyd died in police custody in May of 2020. The video of his death revealed former officer Derek Chauvin – who has since been convicted of his murder — holding his knee against Floyd’s neck for nine minutes. The death and shocking video kicked off Black Lives Matter protests demanding police reform or the defunding and abolishment of police departments.

In January, the Minneapolis City Council moved to abolish police, with three officials calling for a public safety agency, which would replace traditional law enforcement.

“Minneapolis residents are imagining a comprehensive public safety approach that is more effective and more reflective of our values, and they are calling on the city to act,” Councilman Steve Fletcher said of the proposal.
