Arizona state Sen. Tony Navarrete resigns seat after arrest in child sex abuse case

Otoniel "Tony" Navarrete resigned his Arizona state Senate seat Tuesday afternoon in a brief letter to Senate President Karen Fann, five days after Navarrete was arrested on seven felony charges related to child sex abuse.

The resignation is effective immediately, Fann said.

The resignation ends a five-year legislative career for the Phoenix Democrat, who has represented a district that stretches from west-central Phoenix to Glendale.

It follows days of a torrent of calls for him to step down from the seat he was re-elected to last fall.

In a written statement to Fann, with Senate Minority Leader Rebecca Rios copied, Navarrete wrote simply, "Effective immediately, I am officially resigning my post as Arizona State Senator for District 30."

"I'm very glad he decided to do the right thing so he can figure out his next steps," said Fann, R-Prescott.

Fann said she and Rios, D-Phoenix, will issue a joint statement about the resignation. The two leaders issued a joint plea Monday calling for his immediate departure, especially after an ethics investigation was launched.

Navarrete's resignation triggers a replacement process that starts with the precinct committee chairmen in Legislative District 30. They will nominate three candidates, who by law must all be Democrats, as Navarrete is a Democrat.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will choose a replacement from that list, who will be sworn in and will serve out the rest of Navarrete's term, which ends in January 2023.

A status conference on Navarrete's case is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Andrew Cuomo Resigns as New York Governor After Sexual Harassment Investigation

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he will resign from office after state Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation found he sexually harassed multiple women. He will step down within the next two weeks, ending a decade leading the Empire State. Cuomo promised to oversee a “seamless” transition and noted that New York faces challenges as it struggles to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic and deal with new variants that imperil its recovery.

“This is one of the most challenging times for government in a generation,” he added. “Government really needs to function today, government needs to perform. It’s a matter of life and death, government operations. And wasting energy on distractions is the last thing that state government should be doing. And I can not be the cause of that.”

New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will take office and serve out the rest of Cuomo’s term until 2021. Hochul also makes history as New York’s first female governor. In a press conference announcing his decision to resign, Cuomo continued to deny the harassment allegations, although he did apologize for making jokes that were “insensitive and off-putting,” and added that he had “been too familiar with people.”

The drama began in January when Julie and her 11-year-old daughter — both maskless — walked into the local public library to pick up books they had on reserve. Library employees refused to serve Julie and her daughter unless they donned masks despite the library’s website COVID-19 recommendations, which say only “Wear a mask if you are able.”

When Julie did not comply and refused to leave without the books, library workers called in police who escorted Julie and her daughter out of the building and informed her: “If you come back to the library, you’re going to be arrested for trespassing.”

In March, Sam and Julie were accused of placing two small, removable stickers on the backs of a “Do Not Enter” traffic sign and a freestanding curbside pick-up box, both located on public property outside the library.  One of the stickers, about half the size of a standard index card, read: “LIVE IN FEAR, It makes you easier to control.”  The other, smaller than a bumper sticker, said, “THERE IS NO PANDEMIC; Your own government is using psychological warfare on you.”

After several scheduled pre-trial hearings in which the county court system failed to provide an Americans with Disabilities (ADA) coordinator for the couple, Sam and Julie were each sentenced by the judge to 90 days in jail, reduced to 2 days.  Additionally, the judge ruled that Sam and Julie must pay court costs and fees totaling $1,300 each, plus do 20 hours of community service and be on probation for one year.

The sentencing, which took place on July 29, requires Sam and Julie to report to the county jail for their 2-day sentences within 30 days.  Time is running out for them to appeal their convictions.

American Airlines subsidiary Piedmont Airlines discouraged pilots from getting COVID vaccines last weekend "due to high demand" for flying, according to a memo obtained by CBS News.

In the memo sent last Wednesday, Piedmont Airlines Chief Pilot John Pursell told the regional carrier's 500 pilots, "Piedmont will be unable to release any additional pilots for COVID vaccination for the weekend of March 19-21 due to high demand."

Demand for travel has been on the rise throughout March, hitting a pandemic high of more than 1.5 million passengers screens at TSA checkpoints on Sunday.

Pursell told pilots they would need to "attempt to schedule later in the month" so the airline could maintain "operational reliability."

Piedmont is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines with bases in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The regional carrier operates 50 seat Embraer E-145 airliners.

A source at the airline told CBS News that several pilots were denied the time off to get a COVID vaccine last weekend due to a lack of sufficient reserve pilots to cover their shifts. The source added that while employees are happy the airline is busy again, "pilots need to be allowed to be protected…without retribution."

The FAA does not allow pilots to fly for 48 hours after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine shot, a regulation that could strain the airline's ability to keep pace with increasing travel demand that had it "operating at near capacity of both aircraft and available crews," according to the to the memo.
