Grabby Aliens

Advanced aliens really are out there, and we have enough data to say roughly where they are in space and time, and when we will see or meet them

 

Overview

There are two kinds of alien civilizations. β€œQuiet” aliens don’t expand or change much, and then they die. We have little data on them, and so must mostly speculate, via methods like the Drake equation.

 

β€œLoud” aliens, in contrast, visibly change the volumes they control, and just keep expanding fast until they meet each other. As they should be easy to see, we can fit theories about loud aliens to our data, and say much about them, as S. Jay Olson has done in 7 related papers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) since 2015.

 

Furthermore, we should believe that loud aliens exist, as that’s our most robust explanation for why humans have appeared so early in the history of the universe. While the current date is 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang, the average star will last over five trillion years. And the standard hard-steps model of the origin of advanced life says it is far more likely to appear at the end of the longest planet lifetimes. But if loud aliens will soon fill the universe, and prevent new advanced life from appearing, that early deadline explains human earliness.

 

β€œGrabby” aliens is our especially simple model of loud aliens, a model with only 3 free parameters, each of which we can estimate to within a factor of 4 from existing data. That standard hard steps model implies a power law (t/k)n appearance function, with two free parameters k and n, and the last parameter is the expansion speed s. We estimate:

 

Expansion speed s from fact that we don’t see loud alien volumes in our sky,

Power n from the history of major events in the evolution of life on Earth,

Constant k by assuming our date is a random sample from their appearance dates.

Using these parameter estimates, we can estimate distributions over their origin times, distances, and when we will meet or see them. While we don’t know the ratio of quiet to loud alien civilizations out there, we need this to be ten thousand to expect even one alien civilization ever in our galaxy. Alas as we are now quiet, our chance to become grabby goes as the inverse of this ratio.

FISA Court Confirms The Government Lied In Every Spy Warrant Application Against Carter Page

SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 By Jordan Davidson

A newly declassified ruling from a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court in June demonstrates that the government lied about its legal basis for spying on former Trump campaign official Carter Page.

 

The ruling states that the information produced by the FBI’s unlawful investigation into Page was illegally obtained and that it β€œfound violations of the government’s duty of candor in all four applications.” The ruling also orders the government that β€œit must temporarily retain, and potentially use and disclose, the information collected, largely in the context of ongoing or anticipated litigation.”

 

Under the court’s 21-page assessment, information obtained by all four of the warrants and applications is invalidated due to its illegal acquisition, unless the Department of Justice is using it β€œto investigate or prosecute potential crimes relating to the conduct of the Page or Crossfire Hurricane investigations” such as the FBI’s overreach and its violations of FISA.

 

β€œThe Court is permitting use or disclosure of information obtained from electronic surveillance or physical search of Page only where it has been or can be demonstrated to be necessary to remedy or deter the types of harm,” the ruling states.

 

It must also be proved that the information is required for a specific need before it can be accessed.

 

This ruling, declassified on Friday, confirms what the FISA court and the Department of Justice both previously declared in January about the FBI’s investigation: that at least two of the four applications allowing β€œelectronic surveillance and physical search targeting Page” by the FBI were β€œunlawfully authorized.”

 

In the January ruling, a FISA judge claimed that the FBI violated protections for U.S. citizens under FISA law because the government β€œdid not have probable cause that Page was acting as an agent of a foreign power.” Under FISA law, the government is not permitted to β€œsecretly spy” on U.S. citizens without probable cause or evidence that a citizen β€œis unlawfully acting as a foreign agent.”

 

Before that, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court issued an order in December of 2019 that acknowledged the FBI’s failure β€œto include exculpatory evidence in its four successful applications for surveillance warrants.” This order relied heavily on the 17 β€œsignificant inaccuracies and omissions” in the FBI investigation of Page brought forth by the Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz demonstrating the lack of probable cause for the spying.

Subway worker suspended after sharing video of her fight against an armed robber | New York Post

 

An Illinois Subway employee was suspended from her job after a video went viral showing how she managed to wrestle a pistol away from a gunman during an attempted armed robbery. According to the Rockford Register Star, Araceli Sotelo, 20, said the gunman entered the Subway at 1120 E. Italy makes Covid-19 health pass mandatory for all workers & anyone without it faces suspension with NO PAY

 

The Italian government has approved a plan to make its Covid 'Green Pass' certificate mandatory for all workers. The plan, which would see those without the pass put on leave without pay, is set to be implemented next month.

 

The plan, approved by the country's government on Thursday, is set to be put into motion on October 15. The Italian Senate overwhelmingly supported the measure, with 189 voting for it, with only 32 against and two abstentions. The plan will remain in force until at least the end of this year.

 

Under the new rules, all public- and private-sector workers in Italy will have to obtain a Covid-19 'Green Pass' certificate. Those failing to produce the cert when requested can be suspended from their jobs after a grace period of five days, though they cannot be fired.

 

"We are extending the obligation of the green pass to the entire world of work, public and private, and we are doing so for two essential reasons: to make these places safer and to make our vaccination campaign even stronger," health minister Roberto Speranza told reporters.

 

Employees without a valid health certificate who still dare to show up for work can be subjected to major fines, ranging from €600 to €1,500 (some $705 to $1,175). Further details of the plan are expected to be officially unveiled shortly.

According to court documents, between July 24, 2008 and July 29, 2013, Marques operated a free anonymous hosting service located on the dark web, an area of the internet that is only accessible by means of special software, allowing users and website operators to remain anonymous or untraceable. The hosting service hosted websites that allowed users to view and share images documenting the sexual abuse of children, including the abuse of prepubescent minors and violent sexual abuse. The investigation revealed that the hosting service contained over 200 child exploitation websites that housed millions of images of child exploitation material. Over 1.97 million of these images and/or videos were not previously known by law enforcement. Many of these images involved sadistic abuse of infants and toddlers.

β€œThe defendant’s web service anonymously hosted hundreds of insidious criminal communities dedicated to the sexual exploitation of children, which openly and notoriously spread millions of images of child sexual abuse across the globe,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. β€œThis complex, global investigation, lengthy and successful extradition, and substantial jail sentence are proof of the Department’s steadfast and unwavering commitment to identifying and bringing to justice criminals who hide behind anonymous networks to abuse and exploit the world’s children.”

Report: Taliban Beheaded Two Boys Aged 9 and 10 in Afghanistan

 

As the Taliban establishes Islamic rule, beheadings will become the Sharia-sanctioned punishment for non-believers and those regarded as the enemies of Islam.

 

As the Taliban consolidates its hold on power, reports of executions and mass killings are coming in from all across Afghanistan. The Islamist militia beheaded two boys aged 9 and 10, the media reports on Wednesday said.

 

Taliban fighters are hunting down former Afghan government officials and security personnel. Besides targeting people connected to the deposed government, the Taliban death squads are murdering their family members β€” including minors, Jean Marie Thrower, a former U.S. Army officer working on getting stranded Americans out of Afghanistan, told the National Review.

 

The National Review reported the gruesome beheadings, citing Afghan Rescue Crewβ€˜s (ARC) Jean Marie Thrower:

 

Even retired members of the Afghan army are marked for death by the Taliban. β€œWe’ve got people who retired, ten, 15 years ago. They killed the Taliban, and the Taliban don’t forget,” Thrower says. β€œWe have one guy who was just working on cars. He said, β€˜I haven’t done this, I haven’t been in the resistance for 15 years, but they have my name and they’re calling me.’”
