HONOLULU (AP) β€” One of the most active volcanos on Earth is erupting on Hawaii's Big Island.

 

Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed Wednesday that an eruption has begun in Kilauea volcano's Halemaumau crater at the volcano's summit.

 

Webcam footage of the crater showed lava fountains covering the floor of the crater and billowing clouds of volcanic gas were rising into the air. The same area has been home to a large lava lake at various times throughout the volcano's eruptive past.

 

The eruption is not in an area with homes and is entirely contained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

 

All signs indicate that it will stay within the crater," said Ken Hon, the USGS scientist in charge of Hawaii Volcano Observatory. "We’re not seeing any indications that lava is moving into the lower part of the east rift zone where people live. Currently all the activity is within the park.”

 

The volcano's alert level has been raised to "warning” and the aviation code changed to red.

 

Earlier Wednesday, officials said increased earthquake activity and ground swelling had been detected, and at that time raised the alert levels accordingly.

 

Kilauea had a major eruption in 2018 that destroyed more than 700 homes and displaced thousands of residents. Before that eruption, the volcano had been slowly erupting for decades, but mostly not in densely populated residential areas.

 

Before the major 2018 eruption, Kilauea had been erupting since 1983 and streams of lava occasionally covered rural farms and homes. During that time, the lava sometimes reached the ocean, causing dramatic interactions with the water.

 

Over four months in 2018, Kilauea spewed enough lava to fill 320,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, burying an area more than half the size of Manhattan in up to 80 feet (24 meters) of now-hardened lava. The molten rock reduced landmarks, streets and neighborhoods to a vast field of blackened boulders and volcanic shard.

 

After the 2018 eruption the summit lava lake stopped erupting and for the first time in recorded history began to fill with water, raising concerns about the possibility of an explosive interaction between lava and groundwater.

 

The same area of the volcano that began erupting Wednesday also erupted in December and lasted until May.

 

Hon said these types of eruptions could be happening for years as the volcano fills up.

 

β€œWe do know that one thing that happens is that the magma keeps coming in to Kilauea at a pretty constant rate and so it’s either filling the inside of the volcano and repressurize it or it’s coming out to the surface.”

 

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park spokesperson Jessica Ferracane told The Associated Press that she had not yet arrived at the park, but that colleagues reported seeing some lava spatter and glow within the summit crater.

 

β€œHe saw that from Volcano House, which is at least 2 miles away from the eruption site, so I suspect … we'll be able to see a pretty glow, and who knows what else,” she said.

 

The Volcano House is a hotel and restaurant within the national park adjacent to the visitor center. The park is open to visitors.

The male warden of an all-female California prison is accused of sexually abusing a woman held there and taking photos of her naked, DOJ says

 

The male warden of an all-female federal prison in California has been charged with sexually abusing a woman who was being held there, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.

 

Ray J. Garcia, 54, was working as an associate warden at the Federal Correctional Institute in the city of Dublin, near San Francisco, at the time of the allegations, the DOJ said. He was placed on administrative leave in July, the department said.

 

The DOJ cited a complaint alleging that he "digitally penetrated the victim on multiple occasions." The woman was not named.

 

In one instance, the DOJ said, Garcia is accused of first assaulting the woman and then moving her hand onto his genitals when she pushed his hand away.

 

Garcia is also accused of taking photos of the woman naked and showing her photos of his penis on his phone.

 

The DOJ said the complaint went on to accuse Garcia of trying to stop the woman from reporting him by telling her that he couldn't be fired because he was "close friends" with the person tasked with investigating inmate allegations.

 

As part of his prison duties, Garcia had led sexual-assault training for the staff in 2019 and 2020, the DOJ said.

 

Garcia, who has been charged with one count of sexual abuse of a ward, made his first court appearance Wednesday and is next due in court on November 12, the DOJ said.

 

He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if found guilty, the DOJ said.

New applications for jobless benefits rose for the third consecutive week after the expiration of federal pandemic unemployment aid earlier this month, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department.

Dozens of state troopers to resign, instead of facing disciplinary actions over recent mandate

Dozens of state troopers have submitted resignation papers in unity against the Massachusetts COVID vaccine mandate, reports the State Police Association of Massachusetts (SPAM) union.

 

The Massachusetts mandate requires executive department employees to be vaccinated by October 17 or face consequences. About 80% of the troopers are already vaccinated, but 20% are at risk of losing their jobs if they don’t provide proof of their vaccination status by the October deadline, WBZ-TV reported. It’s unclear what other disciplinary action could be a result, but an August press release suggests it could lead to termination.

 

Michael Cherven, SPAM president, suggested in a statement some troopers wanted to be assigned to different departments that provided more relaxed alternatives than a vaccine. Those alternatives could be more use of the mask and regularly scheduled testing, but it appears that wasn’t going to be an option for those who handed in resignation papers.

Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) grilled Milley during the House Armed Services Committee hearing on whether allegations in Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s book were true that Milley had told his Chinese counterpart that he would notify him if the U.S. were about to attack ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

 

According to the book, Milley told Gen. Li Zuocheng, whom he had known for five years, during a β€œtop secret, back-channel” phone call on October 30, 2020, to allay China’s alleged fears that Trump would attack China:

 

General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years. If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise. It’s not going to be a bolt out of the blue.

 

 

Milley admitted to Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Tuesday that he spoke to Woodward for the book, as well as other journalists for their books, to make sure things were accurate.

 

Hartzler asked Milley had he really told his Chinese counterpart that he would be notified.

Call for a Convention of States to Amend the Constitution. Put amendments in that Constitution that have TEETH in them. Severe consequences for violations by anyone in the federal government. 14 States have already passed resolutions calling for it. Need another 19 or 20 states to sign on. The states and especially the RED STATES will have to be the line in the sand against the Feds. If that fails it will fall to individual counties and locals. When that comes under assault that is when the shit is going to get real and that is going to be the hill on which to stand. This would be a measure of last result. Get's to that point and the economy has failed, the civil society has failed and the Wild, Wild West days are back. With the surveilence capabilities they're using these days it would be impossible to organize something like that. A fools fucking errand and I ain't doing that shit.

Two new species of large predatory dinosaur discovered on Isle of Wight

 

A new study led by paleontologists at the University of Southampton suggests that bones found on the Isle of Wight belong to two new species of spinosaurid, a group of predatory theropod dinosaurs closely related to the giant Spinosaurus. Their unusual, crocodile-like skulls helped the group expand their diets, allowing them hunt prey on both land and in the water.

 

The haul of bones was discovered on the beach near Brighstone over a period of several years. Keen-eyed fossil collectors initially found parts of two skulls, and a crew from Dinosaur Isle Museum recovered a large portion of a tail. In all, over 50 bones from the site have been uncovered from rocks that form part of the Wessex Formation, laid down over 125 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous.

 

The only spinosaurid skeleton previously unearthed in the UK belonged to Baryonyx, which was initially discovered in 1983 in a quarry in Surrey. Most other finds since have been restricted to isolated teeth and single bones.

 

Analysis of the bones carried out at the University of Southampton and published in Scientific Reports suggested they belonged to species of dinosaurs previously unknown to science.

 

Chris Barker, a Ph.D. student at the University of Southampton and lead author of the study, said: "We found the skulls to differ not only from Baryonyx, but also one another, suggesting the UK housed a greater diversity of spinosaurids than previously thought."

 

The discovery of spinosaurid dinosaurs on the Isle of Wight was a long time coming. "We've known for a couple of decades now that Baryonyx-like dinosaurs awaited discovered on the Isle of Wight, but finding the remains of two such animals in close succession was a huge surprise" remarked co-author Darren Naish, expert in British theropod dinosaurs.

 

The first specimen has been named Ceratosuchops inferodios, which translates as the "horned crocodile-faced hell heron". With a series of low horns and bumps ornamenting the brow region the name also refers to the predator's likely hunting style, which would be similar to that of a (terrifying) heron. Herons famously catch aquatic prey around the margins of waterways but their diet is far more flexible than is generally appreciated, and can include terrestrial prey too.

 

The second was named Riparovenator milnerae. This translates as "Milner's riverbank hunter", in honour of esteemed British palaeontologist Angela Milner, who recently passed away. Dr. Milner had previously studied and named Baryonyxβ€”a major palaeontological event whose discovery substantially improved our understanding of these distinctive predators.

 

Dr. David Hone, co-author from Queen Mary University of London: "It might sound odd to have two similar and closely related carnivores in an ecosystem, but this is actually very common for both dinosaurs and numerous living ecosystems."

 

Although the skeletons are incomplete, the researchers estimate that both Ceratosuchops and Riparovenator measured around nine metres in length, snapping up prey with their metre-long skulls. The study also suggested how spinosaurids might have first evolved in Europe, before dispersing into Asia, Africa and South America.

 

Dr. Neil J. Gostling of the University of Southampton, who supervised the project, said: "This work has brought together universities, Dinosaur Isle museum and the public to reveal these amazing dinosaurs and the incredibly diverse ecology of the south coast of England 125 million years ago."

Zeroing in on the origins of Earth's 'single most important evolutionary innovation'

 

 

Some time in Earth's early history, the planet took a turn toward habitability when a group of enterprising microbes known as cyanobacteria evolved oxygenic photosynthesisβ€”the ability to turn light and water into energy, releasing oxygen in the process.

 

This evolutionary moment made it possible for oxygen to eventually accumulate in the atmosphere and oceans, setting off a domino effect of diversification and shaping the uniquely habitable planet we know today.

 

Now, MIT scientists have a precise estimate for when cyanobacteria, and oxygenic photosynthesis, first originated. Their results appear in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

 

Fournier says different age estimates can imply conflicting evolutionary narratives. For instance, some analyses suggest oxygenic photosynthesis evolved very early on and progressed "like a slow fuse," while others indicate it appeared much later and then "took off like wildfire" to trigger the Great Oxidation Event and the accumulation of oxygen in the biosphere.

 

"In order for us to understand the history of habitability on Earth, it's important for us to distinguish between these hypotheses," he says.

 

…"Fournier ran this model to estimate the age of the "crown" group of cyanobacteria, which encompasses all the species living today and known to exhibit oxygenic photosynthesis. They found that, during the Archean eon, the crown group originated around 2.9 billion years ago, while cyanobacteria as a whole branched off from other bacteria around 3.4 billion years ago. This strongly suggests that oxygenic photosynthesis was already happening 500 million years before the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), and that cyanobacteria were producing oxygen for quite a long time before it accumulated in the atmosphere."
