EU still insists Moscow will yield under pressure of imposed sanctions

On July 16, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote in an article for the EEAS website that sanctions against Russia are "effective" and that Moscow will eventually yield to the pressures exerted on its economic health. He said that the EU needs "strategic patience until Russia stops its aggression and Ukraine can recover its sovereignty in full. "

EU is on the way to finalizing the seventh package

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, six packages of sanctions have been issued on Russia. The seventh package, the “maintenance and alignment” package, has been proposed on July 15 and is in the process of being finalized "to clarify a number of provisions to strengthen legal certainty for operators and align the EU's sanctions with those of our allies and partners of the G7."

The latest sanctions include cutting the amount of oil it buys from Russia by 90% by the end of the year, despite that Italy and Germany - the largest economy in the EU - expressed concerns over a cut in Russian supplies of oil. It has also pulled out major Russian banks from the SWIFT system, namely Sberbank, Credit Bank of Moscow, and Russian Agriculture Bank.

The sanctions proposed in the seventh package are to place a ban on the exportation of Russian gold. They also include proposals to close some loopholes in previous packages and to add a reference to the recently published European Commission clarification of sanctioned goods’ transit to Kaliningrad in Russia.

In his article, Borrell concluded that "Since we do not want to go to war with Russia, economic sanctions and support for Ukraine are the basis of this response. And our sanctions are starting to have an effect, and it will be even greater in the coming months."

In recent months, Russia has adopted several new strategies to counter punitive measures. Not only has it developed its new SWIFT system, but it has also relocated its oil and goods trade to BRICS members as well as some OPEC members, in order to rebalance its markets amid sanctions imposed by the West.

FOIA lawsuit demands records about Dr. Fauci's wife's health-agency job

Judicial Watch is already working on two other Fauci-related FOIA lawsuits on behalf of OpenTheBooks. com

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit is demanding that the Department of Health and Human Services turn over financial and employment records regarding Christine Grady, the director of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Bioethics Center and wife of Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Judicial Watch announced on Monday that it filed the lawsuit on behalf of American Transparency, also known as OpenTheBooks.com.

Health and Human Services failed to respond to a FOIA request from OpenTheBooks.com in April.

The plaintiffs are seeking information about Grady's job description and her employment contracts, as well as any ethics waivers, financial disclosures or confidentiality agreements she may have signed.

"Once again, NIH is using taxpayer dollars to avoid transparency, and leaving us no choice but to enter litigation that will also burden the taxpayer," said CEO and founder of OpenTheBooks.com, Adam Andrzejewski. "It’s time for NIH to stop routinely hiding information as simple as a job description and embrace basic transparency. We thank our friends at Judicial Watch for helping us get the answers we deserve."

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said, "We have good reason to believe that these financial disclosure records will give Americans a more complete picture of the conflicts of interest that have compromised NIH and Dr. Fauci … That our client had to file a federal lawsuit to gain access to this basic information speaks volumes."

Judicial Watch is already working on two other FOIA lawsuits on behalf of OpenTheBooks. com.

One suit against HHS asks for employment information about White House medical adviser Dr. Fauci, who is head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The other lawsuit asks for Fauci's calendar.

California School Board Considering Putting Planned Parenthood Clinic on HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS

California’s Norwalk-LaMirada Unified School District is set to vote on placing a Planned Parenthood clinic on a high school campus in the district.

The vote about operating a Planned Parenthood at John Glenn High School in Norwalk is scheduled to take place on Monday evening.

According to the proposal, the clinic will not be notifying parents about any students that they provide services to.

“Provider and District acknowledge that under California law minors have the right to consent to reproductive health services without parental consent or notification,” the proposal states. “Provider will encourage Students to involve their families in decision making regarding the Services, as appropriate. Provider will obtain informed consent from Students for the Services in accordance with applicable law, including but not limited to Cal. Family Code Section 6924- 6929 and Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Section 2397.”

The proposal also states that the clinic will be able to provide prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals “related to reproductive health, including contraceptives and antibiotics” and insert “non-surgical long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCS), including, without limitation, IUDs.”

If the proposal passes, Planned Parenthood will be able to operate in the school for five years. It will then go to a vote every five years after that.

“Families and taxpayers should be horrified that the Norwalk-La Mirada USD is considering a partnership with Planned Parenthood,” Nicole Neily, the president and founder of Parents Defending Education, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “The fact that the contract specifically notes that ‘under California law minors have the right to consent to reproductive health services without parental consent or notification’ is appalling in and of itself – as is the list of services that will be offered to children, from STD treatment to IUDs to ‘referrals to other health centers operated by Provider for services not offered at the Schools.”

“Other Planned Parenthood clinics do provide gender-affirming hormone therapy, so there is a very real possibility students will be referred off-campus to receive this treatment – again, with zero parental notification,” she continued. “To add insult to injury, there is no way for parents to EVER obtain this information, as the contract asserts that all medical records are to be maintained by Planned Parenthood (‘neither District staff nor a Student’s parents or guardians may access the Student’s medical records maintained by Provider without the written approval of the Student.’)”

Neily explained that the effort is seeking to remove parental rights of decision-making regarding the health of their children.

Nord Stream turbine on its way to Germany

Canada on Sunday shipped to Germany the repaired Nord Stream turbine that has been stranded in Montreal for over a week due to sanctions imposed on Russia, the Russian Kommersant newspaper reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The fixed turbine should arrive in Russia by July 24.

Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail reported earlier, citing sources, that the turbine Siemens Energy could not previously return from maintenance due to Canadian sanctions on Russia was already on its way to Europe.

German Energy Minister Robert Habeck urged Canada to hand over the turbine to Germany rather than Russia in order to avoid legal action.

The Siemens Energy turbine is being shipped to Germany by plane instead of ship, as earlier planned, the Russian newspaper said. It should take about five to seven days for the turbine to be transported from Germany to Russia, via Helsinki.

Last Sunday, Canadian Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said the Nord Stream 1 turbines sent to Canada for maintenance would be returned to Germany instead of Russia due to the anti-Moscow sanctions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said over the weekend that he discussed the turbine issue with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying that Ottawa’s decision was a violation of the sanctions regime and would never be accepted by the Ukrainian people.

The situation prompted Russian gas giant Gazprom to reveal on Wednesday that it had not a single document allowing German conglomerate Siemens to take a gas turbine engine for the Portovaya compressor station from Canada.

Under the current circumstances, the company said, it would be impossible to draw an objective conclusion about any further development of the situation regarding ensuring the safe operation of the Portovaya compressor station, "which is a critical facility for the Nord Stream gas pipeline."

The Ukrainian foreign ministry summoned earlier this month the Canadian charge d'affaires in Ukraine over his country's decision to return the turbine to Moscow, calling on Ottawa to reconsider its actions.

The debacle called for negotiations between Canada and Germany, and the entire process saw Ottawa facing fierce resistance and mounting pressure from the Canadian Ukrainian lobby, as well as Kiev. The Canadian government was called on not to send the turbine to Gazprom, with Ukraine claiming that this action would be in violation of the sanctions regime on Russia.

Gazprom reduced on June 16 gas pipeline deliveries to 40% of its capacity, explaining this by problems with the maintenance of gas turbines at Portovaya. Nord Stream has since stopped until July 21 for scheduled maintenance.

Meanwhile, the German Bild newspaper reported on Monday that Berlin believed that Russia did not plan on fully resuming gas supplies via Nord Stream 1 after the repairs are completed.

Moscow had repeatedly warned that further maintenance delays could result in a complete shutdown of gas flows via the pipeline network.

U.S. Public Health Agencies Aren't ‘Following the Science,’ Officials Say‘People are getting bad advice and we can’t say anything.’

The calls and text messages are relentless. On the other end are doctors and scientists at the top levels of the NIH, FDA and CDC. They are variously frustrated, exasperated and alarmed about the direction of the agencies to which they have devoted their careers.

“It's like a horror movie I'm being forced to watch and I can't close my eyes,” one senior FDA official lamented. “People are getting bad advice and we can’t say anything.”

That particular FDA doctor was referring to two recent developments inside the agency. First, how, with no solid clinical data, the agency authorized Covid vaccines for infants and toddlers, including those who already had Covid. And second, the fact that just months before, theFDA bypassed their external experts to authorize booster shots for young children.

At the NIH, doctors and scientists complain to us about low morale and lower staffing: The NIH’s Vaccine Research Center has had many of its senior scientists leave over the last year, including the director, deputy director and chief medical officer. “They have no leadership right now. Suddenly there’s an enormous number of jobs opening up at the highest level positions,” one NIH scientist told us. (The people who spoke to us would only agree to be quoted anonymously, citing fear of professional repercussions.)

The CDC has experienced a similar exodus. “There’s been a large amount of turnover. Morale is low,” one high level official at the CDC told us. “Things have become so political, so what are we there for?”…

Why are they embarrassed? In short, bad science.

The longer answer: that the heads of their agencies are using weak or flawed data to make critically important public health decisions. That such decisions are being driven by what’s politically palatable to people in Washington or to the Biden administration. Nowhere has this problem been clearer—or the stakes higher—than on official public health policy regarding children and Covid.

First, they demanded that young children be masked in schools….

Then they ignored natural immunity. Wrong again. The vast majority of children have already had Covid, but this has made no difference in the blanket mandates for childhood vaccines with no strong supporting data..

One CDC scientist told us about her shame and frustration about what happened to American children during the pandemic: “CDC failed this generation of children.”

An official at the FDA put it this way: “I can’t tell you how many people at the FDA have told me, ‘I don't like any of this, but I just need to make it to my retirement.’” Right now, internal critics of these agencies are focused on one issue above all: Why did the FDA and the CDC issue strong blanket recommendations for Covid vaccines in children?

The trouble is that this sweeping recommendation was based on extremely weak, inconclusive data provided by Pfizer and Moderna. Start with Pfizer. Using a three-dose vaccine in 992 children between the ages of six months and five years, Pfizer found no statistically significant evidence of vaccine efficacy. In the subgroup of children aged six months to two years, the trialfound that the vaccine could result in a 99% lower chance of infection—but that they also could have a 370% increased chance of being infected. Pfizer reported a range of vaccine efficacy so wide that no conclusion could be inferred.

“It seems criminal that we put out the recommendation to give mRNA Covid vaccines to babies without good data. We really don’t know what the risks are yet. So why push it so hard?” a CDC physician added. A high-level FDA official felt the same way: “The public has no idea how bad this data really is. It would not pass muster for any other authorization.” And yet, the FDA and the CDC pushed it through. That slap in the face of science may explain why only 2% of parents of children under age five have chosen to get the Covid vaccine…

The FDA’s two top vaccine regulators—Dr. Marion Gruber, director of the FDA’s vaccine office, and her deputy director, Dr. Philip Krause—quit the agency last year over political pressure to authorize vaccine boosters in young people. Two New York residents charged with funneling Chinese investor money to Trump campaign

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Two New York state residents were charged with illegally using funds from Chinese and Singaporean investors to donate $600,000 to then-President Donald Trump's re-election campaign in 2017, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday.

The scheme was part of an effort by Sherry Li and Lianbo Wang to showcase political connections as they sought funds to build a China-themed park in upstate New York, prosecutors said, adding that they raised $27 million in investment, but never completed the project.

Li called the park "Chinese Disneyland," according to a complaint filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors said Li and Wang made contributions in their own names to a committee hosting a fundraiser for Trump on June 28, 2017, but that the funds came from 12 foreign donors the pair had charged $93,000 each to attend the event with them.

U.S. campaign finance laws bar foreigners from contributing to political candidates, or being solicited for donations, but nothing prohibits foreign nationals from attending fundraisers, said Washington lawyer Kenneth Gross, an expert in election law.

Over the weekend we learned that Donald Trump’s former political strategist Steve Bannon had written to the January 6 committee indicating that he might, after all, be willing to testify. Bannon, who has been indicted for contempt of Congress, had previously claimed to be bound by executive privilege—though no court has accepted that argument—but he now presented a letter from the former president granting a waiver. Indicating perhaps how seriously he took the committee’s work, Bannon chose to participate in a podcast with Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani rather than appear at a court hearing yesterday on the contempt charge.

“Congress should not fall for the Bannon-Trump ploy of the withdrawal of a nonexistent privilege,” Norm Eisen, a former ambassador to the Czech Republic and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told me. “Compliance does not purge criminal contempt as a matter of law, and Bannon should not be shown any leniency unless he tells the whole truth.

What of other Trump associates who have refused to obey the committee’s subpoenas and testify? Only the former trade adviser Peter Navarro faces charges and risks the mandatory minimum of a month in prison if found guilty. The Department of Justice has declined to follow up on the committee’s other referrals—most notably, of Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff. Why this hesitancy to prosecute contempt of Congress?

One explanation may go back to what has come to be seen as one of the darkest episodes in congressional history, which involved my own grandfather: the hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee. HUAC was established in the late 1930s to investigate subversive political activity—ostensibly, at first, of both the fascist and communist varieties. By the late ’40s, however, with the Cold War under way, the committee was focused almost exclusively on unmasking alleged communist plots. Through the ’50s, HUAC’s work ran in parallel to Joseph McCarthy’s Senate hearings, which promoted Red Scare paranoia.

Molly Jong-Fast: Democrats are ready to send Steve Bannon to jail

My grandfather, the author Howard Fast, came to HUAC’s attention through his work for the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee, a group set up in 1941 to fund care for refugees from Franco after the Spanish Civil War. The organization had a fundraising arm called the Spanish Refugee Appeal, which my grandfather learned about, he told me, from a friend, the playwright Lillian Hellman, who was the partner of Dashiell Hammett. My grandfather was then working in Hollywood, after a wartime stint at the Voice of America. (According to family lore, Hammett also had an affair with my grandmother, Bette Fast.)

Others involved in the refugee appeal included Orson Welles, Dorothy Parker, Dalton Trumbo, Leonard Bernstein, and Langston Hughes; the group held parties and dinners in Hollywood to raise money for civil-war orphans. But to the Red Scare witch hunters, the refugee committee was a communist front organization. Some of those involved were communists—my grandfather, certainly—but by no means all. In April 1946, a year or so before HUAC went after the Hollywood Ten, the House voted to refer the refugee committee’s board, my grandfather included, for criminal prosecution for refusing to cooperate with HUAC.

Action from the Justice Department was swift. According to The New York Times, “All of them were held in contempt,” and most were jailed, some for as long as a year (my grandfather served three months in federal prison). My grandfather later also appeared before McCarthy’s Senate subcommittee, and as he wrote: “Each time I called upon the protection of the Fifth Amendment … I demanded from the Senators the right to state why I was using this privilege. They were almost hysterical in their unwillingness to grant me that right. The hearing was being televised, and they had no desire to allow an explanation of the beginnings of the Fifth Amendment to go out over the air to millions of Americans.”

Jail and blacklisting ruined many lives, though not, fortunately, my grandfather’s. He began writing Spartacus in prison and found a way to self-publish the book during the blacklist under a pseudonym. It came out via an imprint that he and my grandmother scraped together their savings to create, which they named the Blue Heron Press—after thinking better of naming it the Red Herring Press.

My grandfather saved his explanation for taking the Fifth that the senators wouldn’t hear for his 1990 memoir, Being Red: “Some of the best and richest parts of our heritage exist because the early dissenters were willing to fight for principles, face prison, and if necessary, death. Unless we realize that this is also the case with the dissenters of today, we will find that we have sold our entire democratic heritage for a mess of very poor pottage.”

The congressional power to subpoena witnesses and punish those who refuse to comply needs to be used carefully, and the prosecutions of those who defied HUAC and McCarthy are viewed by many as a gross overreach that infringed upon citizens’ constitutional rights. But there is a sharp difference between then and now. Whereas my grandfather was jailed for refusing to divulge details of charitable work for orphans—because anything anti-fascist was seen as suspect—Steve Bannon was indicted for refusing to share what he knew of an actual fascist plot against America. Bannon has offered no defense of our “democratic heritage,” but has instead hidden behind the former president’s dubious assertion of executive privilege. Now Bannon appears to be seeking to trade belated cooperation to get the earlier charge of contempt dropped.

“Unlike your grandfather, who showed up, actually appeared before Congress, and asserted constitutional and other privileges on a principled basis, Bannon failed to show at all and is utterly unscrupulous,” Eisen said. “He should be prosecuted, and a jury will convict him.”

The part Congress played in the witch hunts of the ’40s and ’50s deserves the infamy it has attracted down the years. But that is no excuse for the Department of Justice to soft-pedal action against those who prefer to protect their political boss rather than the Constitution. Mark Meadows was the chief of staff for the most powerful man in the world, a president who was trying to overturn the result of a democratic election in order to stay in office illegally and illegitimately. Those who advised, aided, and abetted the former president in the run-up to January 6 but refuse to testify should definitely be held in contempt.

Arizona: Kelly Townsend Took Taxpayer Money, Cash from Pfizer to Fund Campaigns

Republican State Senator Kelly Townsend ran her campaigns with taxpayer funds and took money from a laundry list of lobbyists and even big pharma corporation Pfizer as she climbed the ladder of Arizona politics. She masqueraded as an America First conservative before turning her back on MAGA Republicans when she failed to win President Trump’s endorsement. Now, she’s seeking re-election to the Arizona State Senate in a newly drawn 7th District, taking up the mantle of the GOP establishment and their Democrat allies in her primary contest vs. Trump-endorsed State Senator Wendy Rogers.

Arizona State Senator Kelly Townsend has taken over $73,000 from the taxpayers to run her campaigns and launch the political career that has seen her shift her ideological loyalties from libertarian light, to America First, to the GOP establishment depending on the election cycle. In 2012, as she sought a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives, Townsend bankrolled her campaign with taxpayer money, to the tune of $35,835 in public campaign subsidies. In 2014, she did it again as she ran for re-election, raking in an additional $38,133 in taxpayer funds to pay for her own campaign.

The taxpayer-funded campaign cash infusions came courtesy of Arizona’s “clean election commission,” a brainchild of the left that offers taxpayer funds to candidates in an effort to bring “equity” to politics. Though portions of the act that gave birth to the Arizona commission were ruled unconstitutional by a conservative Supreme Court majority, similar programs have been supported by former President Obama, and Arizona Democrat Katie Hobbs has been a longtime supporter of the state’s commission. According to publicly available information on Arizona’s taxpayer-funded campaign subsidy program, the so-called clean election commission has given nearly twice as much money to Democrats as it has to Republicans in its over 20-year history.

After launching her political career – which has now spanned a decade – with taxpayer funds, Kelly Townsend began taking in donations from a laundry list of lobbyists and PACs, including from some big and controversial names linked to national issues.

According to her financial disclosures, Townsend has taken money from lobbyists to fund her campaigns well over a dozen times, with some individual lobbyists donating to her on multiple occasions. She’s received even more donations from shadowy PACs, including those operated by big pharma COVID jab producer Pfizer, and even controversial defense contractor Raytheon, which has spent years at the center of foreign policy debacles in Ukraine and elsewhere.

Kelly Townsend will take on fellow Republican and incumbent State Senator Wendy Rogers for the GOP nomination to the State Senate in a newly drawn 7th Legislative District on August 2nd. Currently, both serve in the State Senate, with Townsend representing the 16th District, and Rogers the 6th.
