Ancient Inca-era tomb found below under-construction home in Peru's capital Lima

 

The citizens of Peru's capital, Lima, were in for a surprise when an ancient Inca-era tomb was found below an under-construction home, archaeologists said on Wednesday

 

This tomb seems to be over 500 years old, lead archeologist Julio Abanto told Reuters.

 

The tomb seems to belong to the elites of the Riricancho society.

 

The Riricancho society had populated present-day Lima before the Inca empire ruled vast areas of western South America in the 1400s, Abanto added.

 

This burial seems to hold remains, which were wrapped in cloth alongwith ceramics and fine ornaments. It contained โ€œmultiple funerary bundlesโ€ tightly wrapped in cloth, the archeologist said.

 

The discovery was made in May during excavation, which started when the building plans for landowner Hipolito Ticaโ€™s house triggered a required archeological survey. "Itโ€™s amazing. I really have no other words to describe it,โ€ Tica told the outlet.

My latest for @dailydot I tried to contextualize the return of Q, point out how obvious it is that someone at 8kun is involved, and remind everyone that these new drops are reruns of old drops.

 

We don't know enough to say where the return of Q is going. There's a good chance it's going nowhere, and was only done to goose 8kun's flagging numbers and troll the media.

 

Also, the conspiracy theory landscape has changed a lot since the last Q drops. There really is no need for Q, or the Q branding anymore. So if Q is really back, they're going to have to work a lot harder than just dropping catchphrases.

Flights in and out of Switzerland were suspended for hours and Swiss airspace closed because of a computer failure at air traffic control service Skyguide.

 

Geneva and Zurich halted early flights but Geneva airport announced air traffic was gradually resuming.

 

Skyguide said a technical malfunction in the early hours of Wednesday meant Swiss airspace had had to be closed to traffic for "safety reasons".

 

Some flights were being diverted to Milan in northern Italy.

 

Skyguide spokesman Vladi Barrosa told Tagesanzeiger news website that the problem appeared to be a hardware fault and they did not believe their system had been hacked. The company later announced that the "technical malfunction at Skyguide has been resolved" and airspace closure lifted at 08:30 (06:30 GMT).

The proposed strategy evades the use of harmful and expensive chemicals and avoids the typical tedious reaction methods.

 

Results: More importantly, the mushroom extract can be easily separated from the product without generating any residual byproducts and can be reused at least three times with good conversion efficiency (75%). It was readily dispersible in water without the need of ultrasonication or any surfactants; whereas 5 minutes of ultrasonication with various solvents produced RGO which was stable for the tested period of 1 year. Based on electrochemical measurements, the followed method did not jeopardize RGO's electrical conductivity. Moreover, the obtained RGO was highly biocompatible to not only colon (HT-29) and brain (U87MG) cancer cells, but was also viable towards normal cells (MRC-5).

 

Conclusion: Besides being eco-friendly, this mushroom based approach is easily scalable and demonstrates remarkable RGO stability and biocompatibility, even without any form of functionalization.

The review, completed at the request of Harvard's president, also found that the university accepted more than $9 million from Epstein during the decade leading up to his conviction but barred him from making further donations after that point.

 

About $200,000 of that funding remains unspent, the school said, and will be given to groups that support victims of sexual violence.

 

The report found that while Harvard's top leaders cut ties with Epstein in 2008, he maintained close ties with Martin Nowak, a math professor and director of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, a research center created in 2003 with $6.5 million from Epstein.

 

Nowak gave Epstein an office at the program's building in Harvard Square, the review found, and circumvented campus security rules to grant the financier a key card and โ€œunlimitedโ€ access to the facility.

 

Epstein frequently visited Office 610, which was known as โ€œJeffrey's Office,โ€ and met with scholars to hear about their work, the review found. He brought his own rug and hung his own photos on the wall. Nowak argued that the office was Epstein's in name only, the report says, but others in the building said it was commonly known to be reserved for the financier.

 

Harvard announced Friday that Nowak had been placed on paid administrative leave while officials review allegations of misconduct detailed in the report. A message seeking comment was left with Nowak.

 

โ€œWe do not take this step lightly, but the seriousness of the matter leads us to believe it is not appropriate for Professor Nowak to continue in his role,โ€ wrote Claudine Gay, dean of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

 

Epstein killed himself in his New York City prison cell in August after he was arrested on sex trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing girls as young as 14 and young women in New York and Florida in the early 2000s. In lawsuits, women say the abuse spanned decades.

Actor Ezra Miller is being accused of grooming a young environmental activist by using 'cult-like' behavior, drugs, and threats of violence. The parents of the alleged victim claim Miller began grooming their daughter at age 12, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. However, the alleged victim declared that her "comrade Ezra Miller" has "only provided loving support and invaluable protection."

 

Attorney and activist Chase Iron Eyes and his pediatrician wife Sara Jumping Eagle filed court documents against Miller. They accused the 29-year-old Hollywood actor of "psychologically manipulating, physically intimidating, and endangering the safety and welfare" of their now-18-year-old daughter. In the documents filed in Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court, the parents also alleged Miller of being "physically and emotionally abusing" to their daughter โ€“ Tokata Iron Eyes.

 

The parents say that Miller met Tokata during the 2016 Standing Rock Reservation protests in North Dakota โ€“ where environmentalists railed against the Dakota Access Pipeline. At the time, she was 12 and Miller was 23.

 

"Miller came to the Standing Rock Reservation in 2016 and established contact with Tokata Iron Eyes under the pretense of assisting the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe during the NoDAPL movement," the court documents read, according to Entertainment Weekly.

 

"Ezra Miller took an immediate and apparently innocent liking to Tokata Iron Eyes and began to formulate relations with Tokata; Ezra flew Tokata Iron Eyes and other Standing Rock tribal members to London, United Kingdom (to tour the "Harry Potter - Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them" studio in which Ezra Miller played a significant character) in December 2017 where Miller attempted to sleep in the same bed as Tokata Iron Eyes who was 14 years old at that time," the documents allege.

 

The court filing claims Miller was "prevented from sleeping in the same bed with Tokata at that time by a chaperone."

 

The parents claimed that the "Flash" star exhibited a "pattern of corrupting a minor" by supplying Tokata alcohol and drugs like marijuana and LSD as a teen.

 

The legal filing claimed that the "Fantastic Beasts" actor offered to pay for Tokata to attend Bard College at Simon's Rock in Massachusetts at the age of 16. The parents claimed Miller "would later use this against Tokata to create a sense of indebtedness."

 

The parents alleged that Tokata dropped out of Bard College in December, then traveled to Miller's Vermont home in January.

 

The court docs stated that Tokata returned home and spent three weeks "detoxifying." Tokata then traveled with Miller to New York City, Los Angeles, and Hawaii.

 

The parents say that Tokata doesn't have a driver's license, bank cards, or keys โ€“ which they believe is preventing their daughter from acting on her own accord.

 

The complaint stated that Miller displays "cult-like and psychologically manipulative, controlling behavior," according to People magazine. The parents said Miller "uses violence, intimidation, threat of violence, fear, paranoia, delusions and drugs to hold sway over a young adolescent Tokata."

West working to disrupt Ukraine peace talks โ€“ Russia

 

The โ€˜provocationโ€™ in Bucha happened as Kiev was putting possible peace terms on paper for the first time, Moscow has complained

 

Russia believes the West is enabling โ€˜hysteriaโ€™ around the alleged mass killings in the Ukrainian town of Bucha to derail the peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on Tuesday.

 

The purported events in the town, which he referred to as a โ€˜provocation,โ€™ have been introduced just as progress was being made at the peace negotiations in Istanbul, he added.

 

โ€œWe tend to think that the reason lies in the desire to find a reason to disrupt the ongoing negotiations. And to do it exactly at the moment when, as they say, the light, even if not very bright, but nevertheless, began to dawn."

 

"On March 29, for the first time in the entire period of contacts between our delegations, the Ukrainian side proposed a written vision of how the treaty could look in terms of the status of Ukraine and security guarantees,โ€ the minister said.

 

According to Lavrov, in the course of negotiations with Russia, Kiev had "for the first time put on paper" its readiness to declare itself neutral, not aligned to any bloc and non-nuclear. What's more, he insisted, the Ukrainians had formalized a refusal to deploy the weapons of foreign states on their territory, or to conduct exercises there with the participation of a foreign military without the consent of all guarantor states of the future treaty, including Russia.

 

The security guarantees provided by the agreement, Lavrov argued, would have completely ruled out NATO's eastward expansion and ensured "indivisible security on the European continent." In addition, the minister added, the Ukrainian side itself wrote down in the draft of the main provisions that security guarantees would not apply to Crimea and the Donbass, a move that Lavrov dubbed as "progress."

 

โ€œOnce again we want to urge those who are leading the actions of Kiev, and we know who they are, to still realize their responsibility for security in Europe โ€ฆ Russia is ready for this conversation but, in order for us to have real progress and not the appearance of progress, we insist that an unambiguous signal be sent to Kiev not to engage in sabotage, otherwise we risk repeating the fate of the Minsk agreements and we will never agree to this," the minister said.

 

After the withdrawal of Russian troops from Bucha, hundreds of murdered civilians were discovered in the town north of Kiev. Ukraine blames the massacre on Russian troops, who had occupied the area until recently, but Moscow denies this. While Western politicians sided with Ukraine on the matter, China issued a reminder that an investigation is necessary.

 

Ukraine signaled that it is still interested in a diplomatic settlement of differences with Russia. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a peace agreement between Kiev and Moscow is possible. โ€œYes, because Ukraine must find peace. We are in Europe of the 21st century. We will continue our diplomatic and military efforts,โ€ he said while visiting Bucha on Monday.

 

Earlier, on March 29, another round of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev took place in Istanbul. Prior to this, representatives of the two held three face-to-face meetings in Belarus. Negotiations started on February 28 in the Gomel region. They then continued on March 3 and 7 in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The talks continued from there via video link.

Biden administration canceling $6 billion in student loan debt for 200,000 borrowers

 

he Biden administration reached a deal this week to cancel $6 billion in federal student loan debt for about 200,000 borrowers who attended mostly for-profit colleges.

 

The agreement covers more than 150 schools, including DeVry University, the University of Phoenix, and the recently defunct ITT Technical Institute.

 

Another 68,000 borrowers who didn't attend eligible colleges will have their applications for relief fast tracked under the deal.

 

he lawsuit was originally filed in 2019 and argued that the Department of Education intentionally stalled the borrower defense process, which is how people apply for relief if they believe a college they attended made false advertising claims.

 

Eileen Connor, the director of the Project on Predatory Student Lending, which represented the plaintiffs, celebrated the "momentous proposed settlement" on Thursday.

 

"It will not only help secure billions of dollars in debt cancellation for defrauded students, but charts a borrower defense process that is fair, just, and efficient for future borrowers," she said in a statement.

 

A hearing for a judge to give the final sign-off on the deal is scheduled for July 28.

Tesla lays off head of LGBTQ+ and diversity lead amid Muskโ€™s โ€˜woke mind virusโ€™ concerns

 

Tesla has laid off both the president of its LGBTQ+ community and a lead involved in diversity and inclusivity programs at the company.

 

While they were let go as part of a broader wave of layoffs, it comes amid several comments Tesla CEO Elon Musk made, concerning what he describes as the โ€œwoke mind virus.โ€

 

Earlier this month, we reported on Musk telling Tesla executives in an email that they need to cut 10% of the workforce and pause hiring due to having a โ€œsuper-bad feelingโ€ about the economy.

 

Later, the CEO decided to clarify the Tesla layoffs in an email to all employees. He claimed that the 10% reduction would be for โ€œsalaried headcountโ€ due to Tesla becoming overstaffed following a long growth phase.

 

Tesla ramped up the layoffs last week, and we reported that unlike what Musk said, they did include hourly employees.

 

Now we learn that many employees involved in diversity and inclusivity programs were part of the layoffs โ€“ including the president of Teslaโ€™s LGBTQ+ community โ€“ and a lead involved in diversity and inclusivity programs at the company.

 

According to sources familiar with the matter, Bobby Berretta-Paris, a five-year Tesla veteran, was let go last week. He was hired as a recruiter and promoted three times during his tenure. He was also the volunteer president of LGBTQ+ at Tesla.

 

Sources also told Electrek about a software engineer that was also let go by Tesla last week. They had been working at Tesla for four years โ€“ most recently as senior software engineer in charge of naming conventions in Teslaโ€™s vehicle UI team โ€“ and had been promoted three times. The software engineer volunteered as a diversity and inclusion leader and was involved in employee protection when it came to issues of diversity and inclusion. (Update: we removed their name.)

 

Berretta-Paris and the software engineer involved in the diversity and inclusion program didnโ€™t respond to a request for comment.

 

The layoffs of those diversity leaders at Tesla come amid CEO Elon Musk making several comments about what he calls โ€œthe woke mind virus,โ€ which he believes is โ€œdestroying civilization.โ€

Labour defeat Tories in by-elections, Tory party chair resigns

 

Britain's Labor Party has won the Wakefield by-election, and has regained the seat it lost to the Tories in the 2019 elections.

 

Labor candidate Simon Lightwood defeated Conservative candidate Nadeem Ahmed by 4,925 votes, garnering 13,166 votes.

 

The elections took place following the resignation of an ex-Conservative MP, Imran Ahmad Khan, who was convicted in May of sexual assault against a 15-year-old boy in 2008. Wakefield had been held by the Labor party since the 1930s prior to Khan winning the election in 2019.

 

Shortly after the announcement was made in Wakefield, Conservatives lost Tiverton and Honiton in Devon to the Liberal Democrats.

 

Tory leader resigns

 

Oliver Dowden, the Tories' party chair decided to resign from his position following these losses, saying that someone must "take responsibility" for the "very poor result" for the Conservative party.

 

In the letter he wrote to PM Boris Johnson, Dowden said โ€œour supporters are distressed and disappointed by recent events, and I share their feelings.

 

โ€œWe cannot carry on with business as usual. Somebody must take responsibility and I have concluded that, in these circumstances, it would not be right for me to remain in office.โ€

 

Johnson has been grappling with calls to resign after a series of leaks showed that several social gatherings were held at his offices throughout 2020 and 2021, flouting Covid-19 social distancing rules, which later became known as the Partygate scandal. The scandal gravely affected his party's standing.

 

The Conservative Party also lost key London council seats back in May, as faith in the party has weaned over the past year.

Stoltenberg has warned that NATO should be prepared to provide Ukraine with long-term support for its fight against Russia. โ€œWe need to be prepared that this may actually drag on for a long time,โ€ he said.

 

Ukrainian President Voldymr Zelensky recently rejected a suggestion from former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who said Ukraine should cede territory to Russia to achieve peace. Earlier in the war, Russia made clear that its demands for a ceasefire include Ukraine dropping its claim to Crimea and recognizing the independence of the breakaway Donbas republics.

 

As the war grinds on, Russia is making slow, but steady gains in the eastern Donbas region. Russian forces have also controlled most of the Kherson oblast, which is north of Crimea, for months now, and there are signs that Moscow is considering annexing the region.

 

Retaking territories now controlled by Russia would take a massive offensive by Ukraine, but Ukrainian forces are taking heavy losses. Zelensky said this week that between 60 and 100 Ukrainian soldiers are being killed every day.

 

While the US and its allies have shipped billions in weapons to Ukraine since Russia invaded, Ukrainian officials say it isnโ€™t enough to mount a counterattack. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said Friday that Kyiv โ€œneeds moreโ€ to mount a โ€œsufficient counterattack and kick them outside of our country to liberate all occupied territory.โ€

Mr. Klukowski had arrived at the department on December 15th with just 36 days left until the inauguration. He was specifically assigned to work under Jeff Clarkโ€ฆ.

Letโ€™s take a look at an email recommending that Mr. Klukowski and Dr. Eastman brief Vice President Pence and his staff. Other recipients of this email included the chief of staff to Congressman Louie Gohmert. And the email says, as stated last week, I believe the vice president and his staff would benefit greatly from a briefing by John and Ken. As I also mentioned, we want to make sure we donโ€™t overexpose Ken, given his new position.

This email suggests that Mr. Klukowski was simultaneously working with Jeffrey Clark to draft the proposed letter to Georgia officials to overturn their certified election and working with Dr. Eastman to help pressure the vice president to overturn the election.

Response of Ken Klukowski to January 6 Committee Hearing of June 23, 2022

The January 6 Committee falsely accused me on Thursday of being a go-between in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election. That accusation is false both in its broad outlines and its details. Since the Committee first contacted me, I have cooperated without hesitation, provided it with hundreds of documents, and sat for many hours of recorded depositions. The information produced from those efforts fully contradicts the Committeeโ€™s statements regarding my actions, yet the Committee has chosen to keep such information to itself rather than share it with the public. I would highlight several critical points of correction:

First, I was not sent to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to act as a link between Jeff Clark and John Eastman on election matters, or to otherwise seek to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Nor did I. My transfer to the Civil Division of DOJ was in the works since July 2020, long before Jeff Clark was the acting head of that Division. The transfer was for the purpose of gaining litigation experience, was preliminarily approved in September 2020, and had nothing to do with the election. All of this is contained in documents and testimony provided to the Committee.

Second, as I testified to the Committee, I disagreed with John Eastmanโ€™s theory on the powers of the Vice President at the January 6 joint session of Congress. My view isโ€”and has always beenโ€”that, because the Constitution specifies that Congress sets the date for the Electoral College to cast its votes, any election challenges in court, or any direct action by state legislatures to appoint electors, must happen by December 14, 2020, at the latest. The Committee has my sworn testimony, and documents reflecting my expression of such views, yet has chosen to ignore them and misrepresent me as advancing the opposite of my views.

Third, I never briefed or advised Vice President Pence, or his staff, regarding any matter, including the 2020 election or the January 6 joint session of Congress. Any outside suggestion that I do so was not made with my involvement. Moreover, had anyone, including the Vice President, asked, I would have expressed the views described above and contradicted any suggestion to the contrary. I made this clear in my testimony to the Committee, but the Committee chose to ignore this testimony as well.

Fourth, while it is correct that I โ€œassistedโ€ in the draft letter for which Jeff Clark later sought approval, that letter was Clarkโ€™s idea, largely dictated or outlined by him, and my role as his subordinate was to commit his dictations and outline to writing and fill in legal citations at the direction of my then-boss over the course of a single day, December 28, 2020. Clark told me the letter was for joint signature by Acting Attorney General Rosen, Acting Deputy Attorney General Donohue, and Clark. I had no knowledge at that time that neither General Rosen nor his deputy had any intention of signing such a letter. Moreover, I had no knowledge of any purported evidence uncovered in DOJ election investigations, nor did I communicate with anyone outside DOJ regarding the letter. Once again, I provided all of this information to the Committee during my depositionsโ€ฆ

Spanish Police Seize Tonnes of Drugs, Arrest Officers Accused of Corruption

 

Authorities said that in two unrelated operations, Spanish police recovered the largest amount of synthetic cathinones ever found in Europe and arrested 61 suspected members of a gang that bribed officers to turn a blind eye to drug deliveries to Europe.

 

The cases show how much corruption has infiltrated society having in mind that private companies, police and customs officials were allegedly involved in those crimes.

 

In one case, the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) seized 3.2 tonnes of cathinones, with a market worth of up to 61 million euros (US$65.45 million), the police said in a statement.

 

The inquiry into the matter began earlier this year, after reliable evidence was discovered during an unrelated search in France, hinting that some port facilities in Barcelona may have been utilized for drug hiding.

 

The investigation found that three companies, involving custom specialists, imported huge amounts of the psychoactive material, then fabricated customs reports to avoid any possible inspection control, according to the statement.

 

In another operation, supported by the EU law enforcement agency Europol and the Economic Crime Center, the Guardia Civil and the Spanish National Police (Policia Nacional) have dismantled a drugs trafficking network that allegedly relied on corrupt law enforcement and customs officers to ship hundreds of millions of euros worth of cocaine and hashish into Western Europe.

 

A total of 61 people were detained for their involvement in this criminal activity, including five Civil Guard members, one National Police officer, and one customs officer, who were identified owing to Europol and Eurojust coordination, Europol said in a statement.

Michael Avenatti pleads guilty in federal court to five criminal charges

Avenatti faces up to 83 years in prison

"Michael Avenatti, former attorney for adult actress Stormy Daniels, pleaded guilty to five criminal counts on Thursday in federal court.

 

During his Santa Ana, California, court hearing, the anti-Trump lawyer pleaded guilty to four charges of wire fraud related to defrauding clients, Fox News reported.

 

He also admitted to obstructing and impeding the Internal Revenue Service from collecting up to $5 million in unpaid taxes.

 

Although he was suspended by the California State Bar, Avenatti represented himself. He was unable to reach a deal with the prosecution before now, but Fox reported that he ultimately "decided to change his plea in an effort to hold himself accountable and avoid any further embarrassment to his family."

 

Avenatti offered to plead guilty to the charges last month.

 

He was already sentenced in June to four years in prison for defrauding Daniels.

 

Avenatti faces up to 83 years in prison for the crimes to which he pleaded guilty on Thursday.

 

Federal prosecutors are expected to announce next week whether they plan on pursuing 31 additional criminal charges against Avenatti.

 

If the government does not bring additional charges against the attorney, his sentencing is expected to be in mid-September.

 

Regardless, he will be forced to pay more than $1 million in fines and about $14 million in restitution, Fox reported. "

Texas - WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER FIRING SHOTS INSIDE HCA CONROE HOSPITAL ER

 

On June 14, 2022, at about 1147 hours, Conroe Police Officers were dispatched to HCA Conroe Hospital Emergency Room (504 Medical Center Drive) in regard to an active shooter. Officers arrived at about 1150 hours they found the scene to be secure.

Harris County Emergency Corp EMS had transported a black/female patient (identified as 65-year-old Glendar Jackson) to HCA Conroe from Harris County for mental health evaluation and Emergency Detention Order per the Harris County Sheriffโ€™s Office. They arrived at the emergency room at 1142 hours and positioned Jackson on a gurney in the hallway with her arms and legs secured to the gurney to limit movement. As they awaited triage, Jackson retrieved a small caliber firearm from an elastic waistband type holster, that was wrapped around her torso under her dress, firing two rounds. One of the HCEC EMS attendants took immediate action and disarmed Jackson. No one was injured as a result of this incident.

After receiving medical clearance, Jackson was arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Jail for charges of Deadly Conduct Felony 3 and Unlawful Carrying Weapon / Places Weapons Prohibited Class A Misdemeanor.

Chief Christy commends the HCEC EMT that took quick, decisive, and heroic action in disarming Jackson as she discharged the gun. His actions likely saved innocent lives.

Conroe Mayor Jody Czajkoski wanted to recognize the Conroe Police Departmentโ€™s rapid and overwhelming response to the reported active shooter situation. He is thankful that the situation was resolved without casualties.
