For our bridal section this month, I asked wedding and event planners Russell Whitehead and Ruthie Bowlin to suggest an especially memorable Memphis wedding that had taken place this past year. Without hesitation — in unison — they responded: the nuptials of Liza Wellford and Richie Fletcher.

Of course, every wedding that Russell and Ruthie Events plans is special, not least of which was “The Royal Wedding” last May (surely everyone has read about that one). Still, Whitehead and Bowlin describe the reception of Liza and Richie last March, held on the grounds of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, as truly magical. “There has been no other wedding like this in Memphis,” they agreed. I am told our bride, Liza, is a “natural” girl — outdoorsy, athletic, and warm — and the plans for her wedding emanated from her personality and style. Fortunately, her gracious and loving parents, Adele and Beasley Wellford, were happy to be able to give their daughter the woodland-themed wedding she envisioned. At the outset, the whimsical and creative wedding invitations provided by Menage Fine Stationery and Gifts were letter-pressed with swirling tree branches that provided the lucky guests with a taste of things to come. On the day of the wedding the bride, along with her bridesmaids, had a dressing party at the beautiful East Memphis home of the bride’s proud grandparents, Irene and Joe Orgill. T

France’s EDF Vows To Restart All Nuclear Reactors By Winter

 

France’s state-held utility giant EDF will restart all its nuclear reactors in the country this winter, potentially alleviating the energy crisis in Europe during peak heating season.

Currently, more than half of EDF’s reactors are out of operation either because of maintenance or technical issues.

“EDF has committed to restart all its reactors for this winter,” French Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said at a news conference on energy security on Friday.

EDF operates a total of 56 reactors in France, but 32 of them are currently either undergoing maintenance or experiencing technical issues, the minister added.

Every week starting in October, EDF will restart one reactor, Pannier-Runacher added.

France has been experiencing outages at its nuclear reactors in recent months, which have slashed power generation from nuclear power plants. France’s nuclear power generation accounts for around 70% of its electricity mix, and when its reactors are fully operational it is a net exporter of electricity to other European countries.

What Is Behind The U.S. Navy’s ‘UFO’ Fusion Energy Patent?

 

When Dr. Salvatore Cezar Pais, an aerospace engineer at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), filed a patent for a “Plasma Compression Fusion Device” in 2019, it was either a giant breakthrough – or mad science. According to the patent application, the miniature device could contain and sustain fusion reactions capable of generating power in the gigawatt (1 billion watts) to terawatt (1 trillion watts) range or more. A large coal plant or mid-size nuclear powered reactor by comparison produces energy in the 1–2 gigawatt range. The revolutionary invention by Dr. Pais, if real, would produce near unlimited clean energy from something no larger than a sports utility vehicle.

 

Dr. Pais’ fusion device is among a handful of outlandish technologies dubbed “The UFO patents” that have, in some shape or form, been pursued by the U.S. Navy.

 

I’ve written before with some skepticism on the implications of Dr. Pais’ purported compact fusion reactor for U.S. energy independence. The physicist appears to have bona fide credentials including a Ph.D. from Case Western, and published some of his work, while much is presumably classified.

 

He has been employed by the Pentagon for decades. And this isn’t the first patent filed in his name, and all of them appear centered around what he calls the Pais Effect. Dr. Pais posits that by controlling the accelerated spin or vibration of electrically charged matter, high energy electromagnetic fields can be produced.

 

One proposed use for such fields is an “electromagnetic field generator” device which could be applied to alter the trajectory of earthbound asteroids over a period of time. While the patent makes clear that such a device would work only on “small” asteroids of under roughly 100 meters length or less, it isn’t hard to grasp the interest of any defense agency in providing contingencies for such a scenario.

John Fetterman has two convicted murderers on his campaign

The Democratic party’s candidate in one of the most pivotal Senate races this November, John Fetterman, has two convicted murderers on his payroll.

 

Republican candidate Dr. Oz is calling on Fetterman to fire Dennis and Lee Horton, who served nearly 30 years in prison for their role in a lethal armed robbery, Breitbart reported.

Fetterman claims that Oz’s claim is a “smear” because the men were “wrongfully convicted,” but neither brother has ever been cleared by a court, the Washington Times noted.

 

The Hortons had their second-degree murder sentences commuted last year by Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor Tom Wolf after Fetterman, the state’s Lt. Governor and chair of the Board of Pardons, pushed for clemency.

 

In 1993, the Hortons participated in an armed robbery during which a man was killed. When police caught up with the Hortons and a third robber, Robert Leaf, there was a .22 caliber rifle in the backseat of their car.

 

The brothers insist they had nothing to do with the crime and just happened to pick Leaf, who was a friend of theirs, up after the robbery. But eyewitnesses, including a woman and her child who were both shot, identified the three men as the robbers.

 

Handwritten police notes that were disclosed after the trial marked down Leaf as the “shooter,” but an appeals court upheld the Hortons’ convictions, since they were active participants in a lethal robbery. In Pennsylvania, accomplices to a felony leading to death can be held liable for second-degree murder.

Smear? Not really

 

The crime comes with a mandatory life sentence. As it happens, Fetterman has blasted Pennsylvania’s second-degree murder statute as “unfair.”

 

He says the Hortons are “two of the kindest, hardest working people I know.”

 

In the meantime, Oz says that Fetterman, who has refused to debate Oz, should fire the men to prove he takes crime seriously.

 

“If John Fetterman cared about Pennsylvania’s crime problem, he’d prove it by firing the convicted murderers he employs on his campaign,” the Oz campaign said.

 

While Fetterman seems to think that the criminals are the victims in this scenario, the murder victim’s brother told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2020 that they “took a human life, and they don’t deserve to be out in society.”

It was recently reported that France’s oldest nuclear power station will be shut down within the next few months. The Associated Press article reported that 14 nuclear reactors out of the 58 now running at 19 plants will be shut down by 2035, in accordance with France’s energy strategy for the next 30 years. This action is part of “the first phase” of France’s plan that calls for a re-balancing of nuclear-produced energy and electricity derived from renewable sources.

Founded in 1847, Orgill Brothers & Co is Memphis' oldest running business.

 

The hardware distributor was founded when the city wasn't yet 30 years old with a population of only 7,000. Orgill sold hardware, cutlery, and guns - everything a pioneer town would need. What's extremely unusual is that after 167 years the same family still "runs the store". Today Orgill, Inc. is the nation's largest and fastest growing independently owned hardlines distributor operating five distribution centers across the country. These centers distribute hardware, home improvement and building materials across the United States and to more than 60 countries throughout the world. Annual revenues total more than one billion dollars.

In the 1840's there was little American-made hardware. It was necessary to import practically all the cutlery, saws, guns, and other articles from Europe. This merchandise came by way of steamers to New Orleans and then up river to Memphis. During this period, two brothers - Joseph and William Orgill came from Straffordshire, England to New York as representatives of the leading British manufacturers to act as importers. They were associated with the New York company of Wiebusch & Hilger. William became a pioneer traveling salesman and got to know the Mississippi Valley very well. He was impressed with the possibilities of Memphis as a trading center. Around the same time, he purchased a hardware business in Virginia

William moved his newly acquired hardware business to Memphis, where he joined in partnership with the firm of R. T. Lamb. Together they had the largest hardware stock south of the Ohio River. Thomas Holyoake and Henry Lownes soon became members of the firm - and upon the death of Lamb, the name changed to Holyoake, Lownes and Company. The new firm erected a brick building on the corner of Front and Monroe streets. It was considered one of the finest in the city.

Edmuond Orgill, the younger brother of Joseph and William, followed his two brothers to New York City. In 1855 he also came to Memphis, where he became a partner in the hardware firm. The name of the firm changed to Lownes, Orgill and Company. Edmund acquired a controlling interest in the firm and held it until his death in 1905, passing the control to his three sons (Frederick, William, and Joseph. His eldest son Edmund , Jr, died in 1885). In 1859 Mr. Lownes retired and the firm's name changed to Orgill Brothers & Company.

The next available Memphis Directory is 1855 and "Lownes, Orgill & Co is still listed. In the 1865 Directory, the listing is now Orgill Brothers & Co. for the first time. See the listings below.

In 1908, the company made the decision to confine its activities to the wholesale trade and sold its retail business to the DeSoto Hardware Company. Frederick Orgill, Jr. is President of DeSoto Hardware Company, which took over Orgill's Front Street Retail Store.
