Ukraine conflict could end ‘in a few days’ – Lukashenko

Western support for the idea, however, is required, the Belarusian president says

If the Western powers back a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, hostilities between Moscow and Kiev’s forces could be over in just a few days, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said on Friday, urging European countries “to come to your senses” and stop the bloodshed.

Belarus considers the fighting between the “fraternal peoples” of Ukraine and Russia to be a “huge tragedy,” Lukashenko said, speaking at a presentation of letters of credence by foreign ambassadors in Minsk.

“This conflict is a direct consequence of strategic intrigues and the greatest stupidity, displayed primarily by Western politicians,” he stated.

However, some actors, including EU countries, say they would like the hostilities to end, Lukashenko said, adding: “If the Europeans sincerely want this, peace can be achieved within a few days.” He urged the Western powers to “come to your senses” and “do everything to ensure that there is peace on this earth.”

The Belarusian president also said that Belarus has always supported diplomatic efforts in resolving the conflict, noting that his country hosted three rounds of Ukraine-Russia talks. He was referring to negotiations that took place in late February and early March, days after Russia launched its military operation. These diplomatic efforts failed to put an end to the hostilities.

“Why were the negotiations wrapped up, who did this? This is a rhetorical question,” he said, addressing the ambassadors. “Someone needs this bloodshed. Who? You, diplomats, figure it out,” he added.

Court documents show Musk and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey discussed changes to the platform prior to the $44 billion buyout

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey had communicated privately about the social media platform well before the former made a $44 billion buyout offer, newly revealed court records show.

A set of text messages exchanged between the two appeared to show Dorsey having tried to get Musk onto Twitter’s board at least a year before the Tesla CEO offered to buy the company outright this past April.

In a text sent on March 26, 2022, Dorsey wrote to Musk that “a new platform is needed. It can’t be a company. That’s why I left.” He explained that he thinks Twitter should be an “open-sourced protocol” and can’t be based around an advertising model, as most social media companies are.

Musk replied by saying he would “like to help if I’m able,” to which Dorsey said that he had already tried to get the Tesla CEO involved with the company a year earlier. “You care so much, get its importance and could def help in immeasurable ways,” Dorsey told Musk before revealing that the “risk averse” board had rejected the idea.

Dorsey said that he thought it was “completely stupid and backwards” that the Twitter board saw the inclusion of Musk as adding “more risk” to the company and claimed that it was at this time he decided to step down as CEO of the platform, which he did in November 2021.

The text messages also suggest that Dorsey tried to get Musk to join the board while the company was battling with activist investor firm Elliott Management in 2020, whose founder Paul Singer was seeking to oust Dorsey as CEO and make Twitter’s business side more profitable. “Back when we had the activist come in, I tried my hardest to get you on our board and our board said no.” Dorsey wrote.

A little over a week after the text exchange, Musk announced that he planned to join the Twitter board. He eventually changed course and offered to buy the company outright in order to battle policies at the social media giant that he claimed were hostile to free speech.

However, after agreeing to purchase Twitter for $44 billion at $54.20 per share, Musk decided to back out of the deal a month later after the company’s stock price took a dive. Musk’s attorneys have argued that he had been misled about Twitter and have cited concerns about privacy, security, and the number of fake accounts on the platform.

Twitter is in turn suing the billionaire to try to force him to hold up his end of the agreement and complete the purchase at the initially proposed price. A trial is scheduled for mid-October at the Delaware Chancery Court.

Notorious Ukrainian envoy lashes out at Merkel’s security speech

The former German Chancellor has “borderline obsession” with Russia, Andrey Melnik claims

Angela Merkel’s attitude towards Russia is “borderline obsession” and looks “almost perverse,” Andrey Melnik, Kiev's outgoing ambassador to Berlin said. He criticized the former chancellor for saying that Russia has a role to play in European security.

Melnik, a Ukrainian diplomat with a record of making controversial statements about officials and policies in Germany, blasted Merkel in a Twitter post on Friday morning.

“On the day [Russian President Vladimir] Putin steals 15% of Ukraine, Ms. Merkel raves about ‘involving’ Russia in the European security architecture,” he said, using the loaded epithets to describe her stance.

Melnik was reacting to a speech that the former chancellor delivered on Thursday in the town of Goslar, which celebrates its 1100th anniversary this year.

In her address, Merkel called the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in late February a “turning point” and “the greatest violation of the principles of international law since World War II.” But a long-term pan-European security architecture can only work if it “also includes Russia” she stated.

Merkel voiced the same sentiment on Tuesday at the Chancellor Helmut Kohl Foundation in Berlin. During that appearance, she urged planning for “how relations towards and with Russia could one day be redeveloped” after the conflict in Ukraine ends.

The accusation of a land-grab leveled at Putin by the Ukrainian diplomat referred to the referendums, in which people in two Donbass republics and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions voted to join Russia. Kiev dismissed the ballots as a “sham” and pledged to fight against Russia until it is defeated on the battlefield.

During his tenure as ambassador, Melnik gained a reputation for verbally attacking German officials and the policies of Berlin that he didn’t like. In May, he called incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst” for his reluctance at the time to travel to Kiev. Scholz abstained after the Ukrainian government refused to host German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whom Kiev accused of appeasing Russia during his tenure as foreign minister.

The controversial diplomat was technically recalled in July, after causing outrage in Poland and Israel by attempting to whitewash the war crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists, who collaborated with Nazi Germany, against Poles and Jews.

Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky appointed Melnik’s replacement last week, but the transition period at the embassy is still underway, according to German media.

A planet-wide collaboration resulted in this remarkable array of sunrise photographs taken around the September 2022 equinox. The images were contributed by 24 photographers, one in each of 24 nautical time zones around the world. Unlike more complicated civil time zone boundaries, the 24 nautical time zones are simply 15 degree longitude bands corresponding to 1 hour steps that span the globe. Start at the upper right for the first to experience a sunrise in the nautical time zone corresponding to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) + 12 hours. In that time zone, the photographer was located in Christchurch, New Zealand. Travel to the west by looking down the column and then moving to the column toward the left for later sunrises as the time zone offset in hours from UTC decreases. MEP wants Russian region split between two EU states

A Czech lawmaker has suggested holding a referendum on making Kaliningrad Region “Czech-Polish”

A long-time European Parliament member from the Czech Republic, Tomas Zdechovsky, has supported an idea posted by a blogger of separating the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad from Moscow and splitting it between Prague and Warsaw.

On Thursday, Zdechovsky shared a tweet from a Polish blogger showing a map of Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad Region being split between Poland and the Czech Republic. The caption to the image read: “It’s time to divide Kaliningrad, so that our Czech brothers finally have access to the sea.”

The Czech politician, who has been an MEP since 2014, even suggested a plan for how to have the region removed from Russia.

“We will hold a referendum to make Kaliningrad Czech-Polish,” he wrote, adding that “instructions” on organizing a vote could be taken from Crimea. The peninsula decided to become part of Russia in the wake of a 2014 referendum following the US-backed overthrow of the democratically-elected government of Viktor Yanukovich in Kiev.

On Tuesday, referendums on whether to join Russia concluded in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, which declared independence from Ukraine, and the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics in Donbass. The residents in all of the territories overwhelmingly supported joining Russia. On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to sign treaties on incorporating the four new constituent members into the Russian state. The treaties have yet to be approved by the parliament.

Kaliningrad is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania and the Baltic Sea and doesn’t share a border with the Czech Republic. The distance between Prague and the city of Kaliningrad is around 660km.

The region made headlines this past summer after Lithuania slapped restrictions on goods being moved by rail between mainland Russia and the exclave as part of sanctions imposed on Moscow over its military operation in Ukraine. The Russian authorities demanded that the blockade be lifted, warning that harsh counter-measures would follow otherwise. The standoff lasted for over a month and concluded with the European Commission issuing additional guidance that allowed the transfer of goods to resume.

'The Hunt for Red October' has this timeless message for Americans today

Published March 5, 2020

Many movies tell compelling stories with great acting and writing, though. I think what sets “The Hunt For Red October” apart is its great message, one that never seems out of sync with the times. This is because it’s a message of hope, though set amid the Cold War, about our common humanity.

We who came of age in the Eighties remember the mutual mistrust that marked the United States and Soviet relations. Yet the two main characters, American Ryan and Soviet Ramius, ultimately want the same thing: to live, to laugh and to love in a world that is free. Ryan had it, but against all odds sensed in Ramius a kindred spirit, a human soul yearning to breathe free. And so he did something about it.

Sure, world annihilation hangs in the balance. That’s what makes it such a gripping story. But Ramius’ journey to America wasn’t primarily political or ideological, it was spiritual. Ryan saw this, beyond the superficial to the essence of things, and that made all the difference. It’s ultimately a tale of redemption. We never tire of hearing the tale because this particular longing is etched upon every human heart.

There is always hope for peace – whether of the world, political or even just familial variety – when we don’t lose sight of our common humanity. These are strident and unsettling times, but in the words of St. Thomas More – in an age a tad more trying for him personally – “the times are never so bad but that a good man can live in them.”

Like Ryan and Ramius, our world today makes it easy to see only what divides us. But also like Ryan and Ramius, good men, what joy awaits us when we, as they did, learn to recognize the common longing that unites us all.

An Open Letter to Governor Newsom

Sir,

Almighty God says in His Word, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Scripture also teaches that it is the chief duty of any civic leader to reward those who do well and to punish evildoers (Romans 13:1–7). You have not only failed in that responsibility; you routinely turn it on its head, rewarding evildoers and punishing the righteous.

The Word of God pronounces judgment on those who call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20), and yet many of your policies reflect this unholy, upside-down view of honor and morality. The diabolical effects of your worldview are evident in the statistics of California’s epidemics of crime, homelessness, sexual perversions (like homosexuality and transgenderism), and other malignant expressions of human misery that stem directly from corrupt public policy. I don’t need to itemize or elaborate on the many immoral decisions you have perpetrated against God and the people of our state, which have only exacerbated these problems. Nevertheless, my goal in writing is not to contend with your politics, but rather to plead with you to hear and heed what the Word of God says to men in your position.

“Let all kings bow down before Him, all nations serve Him” (Psalm 72:11).

“He who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is as the light of the morning when the sun rises” (2 Samuel 23:3–4).

“It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts, for a throne is established on righteousness” (Proverbs 16:12).

What God said to Cyrus is a truth you should take to heart: “I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:5–6).

In mid-September, you revealed to the entire nation how thoroughly rebellious against God you are when you sponsored billboards across America promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13–16; Isaiah 45:9–12). You further compounded the wickedness of that murderous campaign with a reprehensible act of gross blasphemy, quoting the very words of Jesus from Mark 12:31 as if you could somehow twist His meaning and arrogate His name in favor of butchering unborn infants. You used the name and the words of Christ to promote the credo of Molech (Leviticus 20:1–5). It would be hard to imagine a greater sacrilege.

Furthermore, you chose words from the lips of Jesus without admitting that in the same moment He gave the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers.

Psalm 50:16–19 speaks to people who pervert the Word of God for their own sinful ends:

But to the wicked God says,

“What right have you to recount My statutes

And to take My covenant in your mouth?

For you hate discipline,

And you cast My words behind you.

When you see a thief, you are pleased with him,

And you associate with adulterers.

You let your mouth loose in evil

And you harness your tongue for deceit.”

My concern, Governor Newsom, is that your own soul lies in grave, eternal peril. “Each one of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). One day, not very long from now, you will face that reality. Nothing is more certain. “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). You will stand in the presence of the Holy God who created you, who is your Judge, and He will demand that you give an account for how you have flouted His authority in your governing, and how you have twisted His own Holy Word to rationalize it. As you look over the precipice of eternity, what will your answer be? When you look ahead of you and see that nothing awaits you but eternal misery—the just punishment for your sins—what will all the clever rationalizations and political talking points avail for you then? And by then it will be too late for any remedy or redemption. “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

My plea to you, Sir, is that you would not let it come to that—that you would not go to that day of judgment apart from receiving forgiveness and righteousness through faith in Christ alone. In Psalm 50, after rebuking the wicked for uttering God’s words in a profane way, Scripture makes this promise: “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver. He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies Me; and he who orders his way, I shall show the salvation of God” (vv. 22–23).

So there is salvation for those who repent. Christ purchased full redemption for all who will turn from wickedness, forsake their evil thoughts and actions, and trust fully in Him as Lord and Savior.

Our church, and countless Christians nationwide, are praying for your full repentance. Please respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued all your life, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it (as has been your pattern).

Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:6–7)

Governor Newsom, “now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

BBC to cut hundreds of jobs at World Service

Nearly 400 staff at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service will lose their jobs as part of a cost-cutting program and move to digital platforms, the broadcaster announced on Thursday.

The BBC, which marks its centenary next month, said its international services needed to make savings of £28.5 million ($31 million) as part of wider reductions of £500 million, which unions blamed on the United Kingdom government.

In July, the broadcaster detailed plans to merge BBC World News television and its domestic UK equivalent into a single channel to launch in April next year.

BBC World Service one of the UK's most recognizable global brands currently operates in 41 languages around the world with a weekly audience of some 364 million people.

But the corporation explained that audience habits were changing and more people were accessing news online, which along with a freeze on BBC funding and increased operating costs meant a move to "digital-first" made financial sense.

"Today's proposals entail a net total of around 382 post closures," the public service broadcaster said in an online statement.

Eleven language services Azerbaijani, Brasil, Marathi, Mundo, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese are already digital only.

Under the restructuring plans, they will be joined by seven more: Chinese, Gujarati, Igbo, Indonesian, Pidgin, Urdu, and Yoruba.

Radio services in Arabic, Persian, Kyrgyz, Hindi, Bengali, Chinese, Indonesian, Tamil, and Urdu will stop if the proposals are approved by staff and unions.

The broadcaster pointed out that no language services will close, although some production will move out of London and schedules would change.

BBC World Service director Liliane Landor said there was a "compelling case" for expanding digital services, as audiences had more than doubled since 2018.

"The way audiences are accessing news and content is changing and the challenge of reaching and engaging people around the world with quality, trusted journalism is growing," Landor indicated.

Workers hit by the government's poor decisions

On her part, the head of the broadcasting union Bectu, Philippa Childs, expressed the union's disappointment at the proposed changes.

"While we recognize the BBC must adapt to meet the challenges of a changing media landscape, once again it is workers who are hit by the government's poorly judged political decisions," she considered.

Childs highlighted that the government's freezing of the license fee which pays for BBC World Service had created the funding squeeze and the need for cuts.

Bectu will push for staff to be redeployed where possible and to ensure it "mitigates the needs for any compulsory redundancies," she said.

BBC World Service is funded out of the UK license fee – currently £159 for a color TV and payable by every household with a television set.

The UK government announced a freeze on the license fee in January, in what was seen by critics as an attempt to save the then-prime minister Boris Johnson's job.

At the time, Johnson was facing mounting claims of wrongdoing in office, which ultimately forced him to resign.

David Hamblin used positions of power to ritualistically abuse children – as a father, a therapist, a neighbor, and as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office arrested Hamblin in Provo on Wednesday, but investigators said they also anticipate future arrests related to the case.

Neither Leavitt nor his office will be allowed to prosecute the case against Hamblin.

A spokesperson for Leavitt stated she had “no information” as to why.

“I have nothing to hide,” Leavitt said in June. “I prosecuted the therapist in Juab County for poaching a deer… He poached a deer for ritualistic purposes.”

“When I was a law student, this therapist was my elder’s quorum president with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was my neighbor. I had a family connection… There was no organized ring of abuse. It was debunked more than ten years ago.”

During that same press conference, Leavitt described his accuser as “tragically mentally ill.”

She is one of the same women who accused Hamblin and others.

“I know some victims of it. I know some victims of it. I was not in a position to prosecute it,” Leavitt said. “He was into Native American stuff, had killed deer, and got deer hearts and drank their blood and drank the deer’s blood. It’s all – there's some pretty goofy people in the world.”

“I mean, how do you train a dog to roll over when it’s time to roll over? You do it by giving a reward and repetition,” Leavitt said. “If a man wants to program some little girl to give him oral sex any time he wants, start young and give rewards. It’s the same way you help a child learn how to make their bed.”

CIA used covert websites an 'amateur' could have caught: Research

One mistake by the US' notorious intelligence hub, the CIA, has exposed intelligence agents operating in China and Iran, as the agency used hundreds of websites for secret communications that were revealed to be defective.

According to new research conducted by security experts at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the defects could have been easily identified by an "amateur" after the experts investigated the matter following a tip from reporter Joel Schectmann at Reuters that concerned the imprisonment of a CIA asset in Iran after using what Citizen Lab later determined was a “fatally insecure network."

Citizen Lab resorted to just one website and publicly available material to identify “with high confidence” a network of 885 websites reportedly used by the CIA, many of which are concerned with news, weather, and healthcare, adding, “Knowing only one website, it is likely that while the websites were online, a motivated amateur sleuth could have mapped out the CIA network and attributed it to the US government."

Surprisingly, and although the websites were active between 2004 and 2013 and probably not used by the CIA recently, Citizen Lab said a subset of the websites were still linked to active intelligence employees or assets, including a foreign contractor and a current state department employee. As this is considered a significant reveal, Citizen Lab rejected the idea of making details of its findings available to the public to prevent posing a risk to current CIA employees.

The probe could be traced back to 2018 when Yahoo News reporters Jenna McLaughlin and Zach Dorfman reported a breach, allegedly by Iran and China, of a communication system used by the agency.

The group's discovery casts doubts on security measures within the agency known as the "first line of defense for the United States" as it describes itself on the official website. Citizen Lab commented that “the reckless construction of this infrastructure by the CIA reportedly led directly to the identification and execution of assets, and undoubtedly risked the lives of countless other individuals. Our hope is that this research and our limited disclosure process will lead to accountability for this reckless behavior.”

In response, CIA spokesperson Tammy Kupperman Thorp said, “CIA takes its obligations to protect the people who work with us extremely seriously and we know that many of them do so bravely, at great personal risk. The notion that CIA would not work as hard as possible to safeguard them is false.”

The Egyptian pound fell to a record low against the US dollar on Thursday, trading at 19.6 pounds per dollar, as per data from the country's central bank.

Euro plunders against Ruble, reaches lowest since 2014

Hitting its lowest rate against the Russian uble since October 2014, the Euro crumbled in the MOEX (the Moscow Exchange) on Friday to reach a value of 52.5 Rubles/Euro after falling 5.1% (2.97 Rubles) from its last closing session, while current trades are recording continuous losses to the Euro against the Ruble at the MOEX.

On the other hand, the Chinese Yuan recorded slight losses against the ruble, falling by 0.2%, while the US dollar fell by 0.5%, to reach values of 8.104 Rubles/Yuan and 56.92 Rubles/USD respectively.

The euro's rate decline in the Russian exchange market is not proportionate to its trading dynamics in the FX markets, experts stated, arguing that while it's crashing against the Ruble in the Moscow local exchange, it is recording a slight increase against the USD (0.983 Euro/USD at the time of the report), meaning that the Euro is hitting a rate 6.2% lower against the Dollar in the Moscow exchange than it is in the global FX market.

According to analysts, this is caused by the absence of demand for the Euro in the MICEX (Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange) and a large plummet of its currency in the domestic foreign exchange market.

Last May, against all Western claims that sanctions will be the end of Russia's economy, the exchange rate of the dollar and the euro fell against the Ruble, and the currency was trading below 69 rubles for the first time since June 2020, while the euro was trading below 73 rubles.

In response to Western sanctions, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country would only accept payments in Rubles for gas deliveries to "unfriendly countries" in a nod to all EU members involved in the harsh sanctions imposed on Moscow.

The appreciation of the Ruble against the USD and the Euro is mainly due to Putin's decision, as following his announcement, Russia's Ruble rose in the face of the USD and the Euro, marking a major hike since the currency took a dive against the western currencies due to the sanctions imposed on the country.

The Euro also dropped below the symbolic $1.00 mark last July for the first time since December 2002, as a result of a deteriorating prognosis for the economy of the eurozone and the potential for a total interruption of the Russian gas supply.

Eurozone economic growth has been on a decline and could soon become zero, according to the vice president of the European Central Bank (ECB) on September 27.

“We are seeing that in the third and fourth quarters there is a significant slowdown and we may find ourselves with growth rates close to zero,” said Luis de Guindos at a conference, as reported by Reuters.

Due to the stark increase in energy costs and the loss of Russian gas, economic output has been suffering. This has raised the risk of energy rationing in the next season, which will require a lot of heaters.

Last August, EU energy minister gave the European Commission a mandate to limit gas prices. Ukrainian shelling of refugee convoy leaves 24 people dead – local authorities

At least 24 people were killed and 36 wounded when Ukrainian forces struck a refugee convoy on Friday, Vladimir Rogov, a senior Russian-appointed official in Zaporozhye Region, has said.

Rogov wrote on Telegram that the attack targeted a convoy of cars that was traveling from Ukrainian-controlled territory to Zaporozhye Region, which declared independence from Kiev and was recognized as a separate state by Russia on Thursday.

“It happened at a car market on the Orekhovskoe highway where convoys are being formed to enter the region,” he wrote.

“24 people, including 11 men and 13 women were killed, 36 were wounded including a child,” the official said.

According to Rogov, the people, who were targeted, had protested and blocked roads earlier this week, demanding that Ukrainian authorities allow them to enter the Russian-held part of the region. “After that they were approached by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the police, who openly threatened them and said that they’ll be sorry for what they were doing,” he wrote.

The head of the administration accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of “trying to take revenge on the residents of Zaporozhye Region after they chose to join Russia during the referendum” by ordering the strike.

Rogov insisted the Ukrainian attack on the convoy was carried out with the aim of pinning the blame on Russia.

Kiev’s governor of Zaporozhye Region claimed that Russian forces were behind the shelling. While the head of a Ukrainian bomb disposal unit, police colonel Sergey Ujryumov told Reuters that the Russians “know that columns are formed here to go to the occupied territories… It’s not a coincidental strike. It’s perfectly deliberate.” According to Ujryumov, S-300 missiles were used in the attack on the convoy.

Voting on joining Russia ended in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions as well as in the two republics in Donbass on Monday, with residents in all territories overwhelmingly supporting the move. The official ceremony, in which President Vladimir Putin is expected to sign treaties on incorporating the new areas into the Russian state, is scheduled to take place in Moscow later on Friday.

A similar attack by Ukrainian forces happened in the eastern region of Kharkov on Thursday. At least 30 people, including children, were killed after a convoy of refugees, which tried to enter the People’s Republic of Lugansk, came under intense artillery bombardment, LPR authorities said.

A very interesting thing happened at the end of World War II. At this time in history, people all over the world for the first time we’re reporting seeing strange unidentified objects in the sky or UFO’s which are Unidentified Flying Objects. These objects were witnessed moving around in the sky at great speed. In 1947 the first UFO was spotted by a man named Kenneth A. Kenneth was documented stating that he saw, with his own eyes, 9 saucer-shaped objects flying at the rate of about 1700 kilometers per hour. A couple of committees were created with the intent to explain and demystify the events usually linking them to man-made error activity. Of course seeing events like this obviously sparked a lot of interest from scientists, military, government, law enforcement and the general public alike. An abundance of data concerning these UFO’s was collected at that time. This is when U.F.O’s became a public phenomenon.

The United States government and the media were definitely involved in putting out misleading information which contradicted the original stories given by eyewitnesses and therefore effectively convoluting the airways. This didn’t sit well with Serge Monast, a Canadian from Quebec born in 1945 who was an investigative journalist, essayist, poet, and conspiracy theorist. Serge gained a lot of popularity from quest appearing on shows that deal with the phenomenon of an esoteric nature.

In 1994, he published Project Blue Beam (NASA), in which he detailed a four-step base operation set up by the US government by way of NASA with the help of the United Nations. This operation or program was to implement a New Age religion with the Antichrist at its head who will publically ridicule and denounce all of the four major religions. This will help usher in the New World Order. In his publication, Serge mentions how these entities will further fool the people by projecting a technologically simulated Second Coming of Christ.

The four steps of Project Blue Beam starts with step number one where they will manufacture sophisticated top-secret weapons to cause earthquakes around the world in specific and strategic locations in order to unearth religious artifacts with the attempt to use them to disprove the religions’ effectiveness. This phase was said to have been in effect since 2012. In step two, Serge writes that they will use sophisticated technology to beam 3D holographic images of all of the prophets or heads of the four major religions: Jesus, Mohammed, Kristna and Budha. The images would be broadcast simultaneously in the sky around the world. They will then merge these images into one in order to make all people feel there God is speaking directly to them. Their sole intent is to use this tactic to usher in the antichrist and the end times.

In step three of Project Blue Beam, Serge writes that they will use invisible wave frequency technology via a telephonic platform to access people’s minds and implant thoughts in order to gain control of the mind and make people feel that they are in direct communication with their God. Step four is the final step in this project where they will use their sophisticated tech to put the thought in the individual’s minds that the rapture is coming and that they face an imminent alien invasion. Also, they will get a transmission into their minds that currently there are other planets being invaded and ravished. They will use a fake alien invasion to finalize the birth of there New World Religion, the antichrist’s arrival, and the New World Order.

Serge Monast mysteriously died in 1996 in his home from a heart attack the day after he was arrested and jailed. The authorities took custody of his children who he was having homeschooled at the time prior to his untimely death. Is there truth to this Project Blue Beam dilemma? Was Serge Monast’s untimely death a coincidence? I’m going to leave that up to you to decide. Stay safe.

Putin has declared the annexation of the Russian-controlled territories of four Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, after holding sham referendums in the occupied areas.

UK implicated in Bolsonaro's dirty business; hidden dealings exposed

The BBC aired a documentary, in September 2022, titled “The Boys from Brazil: Rise of the Bolsonaros”.

The series, which constitutes of three parts, co-released with PBS in the United States, follows the ascent of Brazil's far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, who rose to the position of the country's 2018 presidential election winner from an obscure dictatorship-era military figure.

“Jair Bolsonaro is one of the world’s most controversial leaders”, the documentary begins. “An ardent admirer of Brazil’s military dictatorship, Bolsonaro came to power determined to revive their policies to exploit the Amazon – whatever the cost."

The documentary was released just days before Brazil's presidential election on October 2, with former president and Workers' Party (PT) candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the lead. Concerns are growing about Bolsonaro's willingness to accept electoral defeat if he loses the election.

While the documentary features voices critical of the Bolsonaro dictatorship, it omits one important aspect of obvious importance to the British public: the UK government's hidden dealings with the Bolsonaros.

Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act illustrate UK engagement with Brazil's far-right and demonstrate how Bolsonaro's Brazil has created a financial opportunity for the UK.

The Bolsonaros

Documents show that British officials met with the Bolsonaros in the months leading up to the 2018 election in Brazil.

The UK Ambassador in Brasilia, Vijay Rangarajan, met with Bolsonaro, his son and congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, and an unnamed advisor on April 10, 2018, just days after Lula was imprisoned. One name has been redacted.

It is worth noting that the then-chief secretary to the Treasury and current Prime Minister Liz Truss arrived in Brazil on April 9 to promote “free trade, free markets, and post-Brexit opportunities."

“British officials met with the Bolsonaros in the months running up to Brazil’s 2018 election.”

Truss met with Rangarajan in the UK Embassy in Brasilia on April 10, the same day Rangarajan met with the Bolsonaros, according to documents obtained by Declassified UK.

However, it remains unclear whether Truss also met Bolsonaro, or if her company with the same people on the same day was an unlikely coincidence. The Treasury did not respond to questions regarding Truss and the Bolsonaros.

The remainder of Truss’ visit to Brazil entailed meetings with ministers and officials on matters including “privatization”. In one of Truss’ briefing notes, it is observed that there is a new “interest in the open market” in Brazil, which “has enormous reserves of oil and gas."

‘Strategic partners’

Two months after Truss' visit, Ambassador Rangarajan sent Bolsonaro a private letter inviting him to his apartment in Brasilia to meet with a group of "Strategic Partners".

Anglo-American, BP, Shell, AstraZeneca, Unilever, and JCB were among the companies that used this word as a euphemism for the directors of Britain's biggest oil, mining, pharmaceutical, and construction enterprises.

“Deputy Bolsonaro”, the letter reads, “it was a great pleasure to meet you and initiate our conversation in April of this year. I would like to invite you for a morning coffee or lunch in my residency with the largest British investors in Brazil, at a time that best suits you”.

The meeting would be attended by “in total no more than 20 people, to allow for a fluid discussion." Rangarajan concluded the letter by telling Bolsonaro: “I hope to meet you again”.

BP and Shell

Britain continued to collaborate with the Bolsonaros following the 2018 election.

Rangarajan and Bolsonaro met again on November 14, that year, along with vice-president elect Hamilton Mouro, General Augusto Heleno, two of Bolsonaro's sons, and unknown "others".

“Rangarajan met with representatives of both companies no less than 20 times during 2018 and 2019.”

The Foreign Office has refused to reveal what was discussed at this discussion, albeit it appears that investment prospects for Britain's biggest multinationals were highlighted once more.

Indeed, the United Kingdom pushed the Brazilian government on behalf of BP and Shell in 2017, and Rangarajan met with representatives from both corporations at least 20 times in 2018 and 2019.

Truss' tour also included a discussion with Shell personnel, who boast of a "prolific… portfolio" of deep-water oil and gas production in Brazil.

"Thatcher's legacy back to life"

UK trade minister Conor Burns traveled in August 2019 to Brazil. There, he met with Bolsonaro’s infrastructure minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, praising the Brazilian government’s “economic reform agenda," which was “reminiscent of Thatcher’s."

Burns met with the state governor and former Bolsonaro ally Wilson Witzel in Río de Janeiro, whose police had killed 881 people between January and July of that year – the highest number in nearly two decades.

Alarmingly, Burns “stressed the breadth of UK interests” in Río, adding that the UK “stood ready to work together on a range of issues, including security” matters, citing “facial recognition” as an area of UK “expertise”.

During Bolsonaro's presidency, British trade with Brazil increased significantly. According to a joint statement issued by then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Guedes, total trade between the UK and Brazil was valued at £6.5 billion in 2019, representing a 12.6% increase over 2018.

Both governments had taken "the right measures at the right time to protect livelihoods and jobs from the adverse economic effects of the [Covid-19] pandemic," according to the statement.

The then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Bolsonaro in the United Nations Security Council in September 2019 to discuss "trade and security," among other topics, just weeks after the Brazilian leader sparked international concern that he was planning a military coup.

Britain has also provided some military training to Brazil over the past four years, but the Ministry of Defense has refused to disclose the costs, stating that to do so “has the potential to adversely affect relations with our allies."

More recently, Bolsonaro was the only South American political leader to attend the Queen’s funeral.

Lev Tahor Jewish sect members held in Mexico escape

About 20 members of a Jewish sect held at a facility in Mexico after a police raid on their jungle base have fled.

Footage showed men, women, and children streaming out of the site in Huixtla, in the west, on Wednesday night.

They had been there since the raid last Friday when two members were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and serious sexual offences.

The sect, Lev Tahor, is known for extremist practices and imposing a strict regime on its followers.

It advocates child marriage, inflicts harsh punishments even for minor transgressions and requires women and girls as young as three years old to completely cover up with robes.

Local media said members of the group had been protesting against their detention since their arrival, including rioting and assaulting personnel.

Video from Reuters news agency shows the detainees, dressed in gold, grey and white robes, forcing their way past two guards at a gate as one of their members holds it open.

One of the guards trying to hold them back falls down and the group climb over him as they make their escape. A youth is seen turning and kicking the guard as he lies on the ground.

It is unclear where the group has gone.

Associated Press said they were collected by a lorry and headed towards the border with Guatemala, while news site El Heraldo de México said they went by foot for several miles before disappearing into the night.

Their compound, 11 miles (17.5km) north of Tapachula in Chiapas state, was raided by an elite police unit after a months-long investigation and surveillance operation involving Mexican and Guatemalan authorities and a private four-man team from Israel including former Mossad and domestic intelligence agents.

Twenty-six members were found at the site, among them Israelis with dual citizenships including Canada, the US and Guatemala, Israel's foreign ministry said.

‘I can’t imagine our future differently’: Donbass residents explain why they voted to join Russia

In this dispatch, RT’s correspondent in Donetsk outlines the local reaction to the referendums on reunification

Last week, referendums on once-again becoming part of Russia were held in the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics, as well as in the liberated territories of Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Nikolaev regions (the latter was annexed to Kherson Region).

According to the results, the ‘For’ option won all four by an overwhelming margin. RT’s correspondent in Donbass, Vladislav Ugolny, has been observing the sentiment there for the past eight years. He describes how the referendums took place, what they meant to local residents, and why their outcome simply could not have been different.

All arguments ‘against’

For those who are sufficiently immersed in the history of the struggle of the Russian residents of Ukraine for unity with their historic homeland, the results of the referendums are hardly surprising. But it is also worth pointing out from the start that not everyone in these regions took part in the vote.

In 2020, one soldier told his comrades-in-arms that he was only serving in the DPR army for the sake of a good salary by local standards. He said that, at the time, he was ready to dig trenches and go on guard duty. But in case of a resumption of active military operations, he would be at Yuzhny, a station from which buses are dispatched to Russia.

Active hostilities resumed over six months ago, eventually leading to the second referendum in Donbass. And this warrior did not take part in it.

Why? Did keep his word and escape? No, he died in 2021. He could have said anything – soldiers like to scratch their tongues. But when his comrades-in-arms came under Ukrainian fire and their wounded had to be evacuated, he volunteered. During the rescue operation, he was killed in action. He did not live to see the fighting intensify, nor did he live to see the new referendum.

There are many such people who are unhappy with what has been happening in Donbass these past eight years –where they have slowly languished as geopolitical hostages– and are also prepared to die for their land and identity. It is thanks to them and their resilience that Russia’s military offensive was possible. And these referendums also took place because of them.

They all had a lot of reasons to hate what was happening. The wounded were often dismissed retroactively to avoid paying for their injuries. And in a betrayal of memory,the names of children killed by Ukrainians in Sloviansk and Konstantinovka,

towns not controlled by the DPR, disappeared from the Alley of Angels (a monument honoring the children of Donbass killed by Ukrainians). By removing these names, it was as if DPR officials were abandoning the territories and the memory of those who remained under Kiev’s occupation.

In the early years of its independence, the LPR had constant political crises, from which the despised Igor Plotnitsky emerged as the victor. Until he was overthrown and the much more popular Leonid Pasechnik was elected.

All arguments ‘for’

The hope for reunification was based on the fact that Russia is a stable state governed by the rule of law, with fully-fledged institutions and an established civil society. Living their lives on the frontline of a geopolitical confrontation, Russians in Donbass dreamed that one day war would disappear.

They hoped that Donbass would become an ordinary, peaceful region of Russia, like neighboring Rostov. They hoped that they would be able to put away their weapons and return to the mines and factories, and they could teach their children without regular shelling. Or that they could sweep the streets for leaves instead of scrubbing away blood from the pavement. Joining Russia offered hope and was synonymous with victory. After all, this is why the struggle started…

Israeli news website "Israel" Hayom claimed Thursday that progress has been made in recent days between the Israeli occupation and Oman regarding talks to open the Sultanate's airspace to Israeli airlines.

The newspaper said the issue was discussed last week between a high-ranking Israeli official and his Omani counterparts, noting that it appears that talks took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

"Israel" Hayom pointed out that it is not absolutely clear whether the talks took place directly between Israeli and Omani officials or through Emirati and Saudi mediation.

Oman refuses to open its airspace to Israeli flights

In mid-August, Israeli media reported that "the Sultanate of Oman refused to open its airspace to Israeli flights," due to "Iranian pressure".

"Israel" Hayom said, "Oman refuses to open its airspace to Israeli travel planes amid intense Iranian pressure."

The newspaper added, "What this means so far is that it is not possible to benefit from opening the Saudi airspace to Israeli aircraft to shorten the flight time to the Far East."

Fate decided otherwise and the referendums had to be held during the fighting, with the risk of Kiev shelling the polling stations. Thus, the votes themselves did not become a moment of triumph and victory. But they could no longer be delayed, given that one of the declared aims of Moscow’s military operation was to restore peace to Donbass.

The only way to protect both Donbass and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye from the threat of genocide by the Ukrainian state was to incorporate them into the Russian Federation. The sweeps in Kharkov Region after towns and villages were seized by Kiev earlier this month, and the convoys of refugees, were apparently the final straw.

The risk of polling stations being shelled was one reason some locals criticized the referendums. A friend of mine who is now serving in one of the DPR’s army units refused to participate in the referendum. He justified it by saying he had expressed his position a long time ago and was now defending it with a gun in his hand.

He also questioned why the entry of the republics into Russia could not have simply been done by a decree of the Russian government. Why, he asks, do they ask a question to which the answer is already obvious?

Needless to say, this warrior is not a big fan of democracy.

However, his view was marginal. Residents of Donbass, despite the risks of terrorist attacks, flocked to the polls. Since the issue was a foregone conclusion, the polling stations became a place for declaring one’s position.

Journalists were told not about the choice people made, but rather about how long they had waited for the opportunity to make it.

The procedures of the referendum were designed with the usual legal provisions in mind, but the voters themselves effectively abolished the concept of ‘secret ballot’ by ticking the ‘yes’ box publicly.

“The people of Donbass needed the referendum not to reassert their choice, which was made back in 2014 and has not changed since, but to present it to the international community in a more or less accepted framework,” a graduate of the political science department at Donetsk National University said after the vote. A leg injury prevented her from going to the polling station, but she was able to vote Yes by door-to-door voting:

As I stood at the mobile ballot box in my backyard in the rain, listening to the sound of explosions in a neighboring district,I felt joy. Because it is, in any case, a step forward after too much stagnation.

Dmitry, a native of the border town of Yenakievo, Donbass, said, “Of course I waited for the referendum and voted Yes. I cannot imagine our future any other way. Back in 2015, I was repeatedly offered the chance to leave my home region and live in Ukraine so that I would not know what war is like.

“As you can see, I refused. Voting in the referendum was not my biggest contribution, but I was glad I did it. I didn’t doubt it for a second,especially when, about 40 minutes later, a HIMARS missile was shot down over the polling station, with shrapnel hitting my neighborhood.”

This is how the referendum was held in Donbass. As for the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, the votes there were less festive there due to greater infiltration by Ukrainian security services and a bigger risk of sabotage. The lack of an eight-year wait was also a factor. However, even there, people were hoping that the Kharkov tragedy would not be repeated in their areas.

The referendums that have taken place are like a marriage proposal made after eight years of engagement. There may be reason to speculate why it was not done earlier, but the answer is obvious.

Upon President Putin signing these treaties, this report details, they must be submitted to the Constitutional Court to ensure they comply with Russian law—once they are cleared, the treaties have to be ratified by the lower house, the State Duma, and the upper house of parliament, the Federal Council—only after that will the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republic and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye officially become integrated into the Russian Federation—and the next session of the Federal Council when this will occur is planned for 4 October.

'Israel' to follow US model, use armed drones in occupied West Bank

The Israeli occupation forces will start using armed drones for targeted killings of what "Tel Aviv" describes as "terrorists" in the occupied West Bank, The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The Israeli newspaper said IOF commanders in the occupied West Bank were permitted by "Tel Aviv" to use armed drones for targeted killings, with the approval of Israeli Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi.

The occupation's troops have been granted the "green light" to take matters into their own hands and use drones to conduct offensive strikes on Palestinian resistance groups that "pose an imminent threat to the Israeli military", the Israeli outlet said. Previously, the drones' role was only providing cover and reconnaissance for the IOF.

Through this step, the Israeli occupation is following the model of the United States, which has been conducting air and drone strikes against its targets for years, most prominently under the Obama administration.

Through its arbitrary drone strikes, the United States assassinated the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps' Al-Quds Brigade, Brigadier General Qassem Soleimani. The assassination stoked tensions between Washington and Tehran and gave rise to fears about a third World War.

Using drone strikes allows the Israeli occupation to evade accountability the same way the US has been for years. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he did not know whether the person killed by the US drone strike was an aid worker or an ISIS-K operative when asked about the strike before the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.

The arbitrary and brutal execution of 10 civilians took place in the final hours of America's withdrawal from the country after it carried out a very chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which saw hundreds upon hundreds flocking toward the airport, stampedes, and abandoned allies.

An investigation by the Pentagon concluded that the airstrike was an "honest mistake" and no legal or disciplinary action was recommended afterward. This caused outrage among human rights groups, activists, and the US Congress itself.

Unidentified drones spotted before Nord Stream blasts

The number of unmanned aircraft near Norway’s offshore platforms surged in September, energy workers reported

Norway’s offshore energy operators reported an increasing number of unidentified drones near their platforms in the days leading up to the apparent sabotage of the Russian Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines.

The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority held a meeting with members of the country’s oil and gas industry on Thursday, warning them that recent reports indicated “increased drone activity” over the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).

“These craft have been of different sizes, and their presence has been growing – particularly in September,” the agency stated, adding that the drone sightings are being investigated by the Norwegian police.

In a letter dated last Friday, the agency warned Norway’s maritime and aviation authorities that energy operators on the NCS had “recently given warnings/notifications of a number of observations concerning unidentified drones/aircraft close to offshore installations.”

Three days after the letter was sent and around 1,000km (620 miles) to the south of the NCS, a leak was reported along the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, followed by two leaks a day later along Nord Stream 1, all near the Danish island of Bornholm.

As of Thursday, a total of four leaks had been discovered along the pair of Russia-to-Germany gas lines, according to the Swedish coast guard.

Sweden and Denmark told the United Nations Security Council on Thursday that “at least two detonations” equal to “several hundred kilos”of TNT took place at the sites of the leaks. Without identifying a culprit, the two Nordic nations wrote that “all available information indicates that those explosions are the result of a deliberate act.”

While the Ukrainian government and some US pundits have blamed Russia for attacking its own pipeline, Moscow has suggested Western involvement. “We already have certain materials, which point to a Western trace in organizing and executing this terrorist attack,”the director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, told reporters on Friday.

US President Joe Biden said in early February that the US would “end” Nord Stream 2 if Russian troops entered Ukraine, telling a reporter “I promise you, we will be able to do it.” Additionally, the US-led NATO alliance conducted military exercises involving underwater drones near Bornholm in June, while US military vessels were spotted near the island last week.

Paraguay's Benitez asks Taiwan for $1bln to ally with them over China

In an interview with The Financial Times, Paraguayan president Mario Abdo Benitez underlined his government's adamance in working with Taiwan to ensure Asunción receives “the real benefits of the strategic alliance”, as he asked the island for an investment of $1 billion in attempt to brush off the pressure to transfer its diplomatic ties to China.

“There is Taiwanese investment of more than $6 billion in countries which don’t have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, we want from that $1 billion to be put in Paraguay,” he added. “That will help us to build the argument about the importance of this strategic alliance with Taiwan.”

According to Dr. Mark Harrison, a senior lecturer in Chinese studies at the University of Tasmania, Taiwan was constantly threatened to lose allies, and comments such as those of Benitez would signal a debate about switching. He stated that "following the developments in the Pacific over the last several years, there is a greater awareness in the US and elsewhere that switching recognition from Taipei to Beijing can be the first step to other security and economic links with China, so no doubt there will be diplomatic work underway from a number of countries to understand Asunción’s position on continuing relations with Taiwan.”

With a GDP of about $39 billion, 30% of which comes from agriculture, Paraguay's Abdo Benítez revealed that a sustainable relationship with Taiwan over one with China had come to cost his country, telling The Financial Times that export producers were feeling the heat due to the lack of access to the Chinese market, as was the impediment in the ability to acquire Covid-19 vaccines when they were primarily only available from China.

The US has recently intended to enrich and bolster relations with the Pacific islands while counteracting China’s growing engagement in the region. While the islands sought to address their climate emergency in July, US Vice President Kamala Harris announced in an unprecedented move a fund of $600 million to the islands in order "to counter the Chinese influence in the region."

However, Abdo Benitez's statements were retreated by Paraguay’s foreign affairs minister, Julio César Arriola on Thursday at a press conference by Taiwan’s ministry of foreign affairs, according to the ministry spokeswoman, Joanne Ou.

Ou commented that Arriola stated, “what President Abdo emphasized in the exclusive interview is that Paraguay has excellent investment conditions and hopes that Taiwanese businessmen can enter the South American market by investing in Paraguay, which is of great significance to the establishment of a strategic partnership between Taiwan and Paraguay”. Ou further asserted that the Taiwanese government would maintain its advocacy for local businesses to invest in Paraguay.

To "clarify" the nature and connotation, Arriola spoke to Taiwan’s ambassador to Paraguay and argued that the bilateral ties between the two countries were “based on common values and ideas” and there was no "this for that" type of relationship.

Paraguay is one of the mere 14 countries holding formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan instead of China, with most nations concentrated in Latin America and the Pacific. Still, China recently has fortified ties with several, including the Solomon Islands, which signed a security deal with China in April, Panama, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua, that have come with vows of increased trade, loans, and investment.

CIA plot led to huge blast in Siberian gas pipeline

A CIA operation to sabotage Soviet industry by duping Moscow into stealing booby-trapped software was spectacularly successful when it triggered a huge explosion in a Siberian gas pipeline, it emerged yesterday.

Thomas Reed, a former US Air Force secretary who was in Ronald Reagan's National Security Council, discloses what he called just one example of the CIA's "cold-eyed economic warfare" against Moscow in a memoir to be published next month.

Leaked extracts in yesterday's Washington Post describe how the operation caused "the most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space" in the summer of 1982.

Mr Reed writes that the software "was programmed to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds".

The CIA learned of Soviet ambitions to steal the software via a French KGB source, Col Vladimir Vetrov, codenamed Farewell. His job was to evaluate the intelligence collected by a shadowy arm of the KGB set up a network of industrial spies to steal technology from the West.

The breakthrough came when Vetrov told the CIA of a specific "shopping list" of software technology that Moscow was seeking to update its pipeline as it sought to export natural gas to Western Europe.

Washington was keen to block the deal and, after securing President Reagan's approval in January 1982, the CIA tricked the Soviet Union into acquiring software with built-in flaws.

"In order to disrupt the Soviet gas supply, its hard currency earnings from the West, and the internal Russian economy, the pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines and valves was programmed to go haywire after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds," Mr Reed writes.

The project exceeded the CIA's wildest dreams. There were no casualties in the explosion, but it was so dramatic that the first reports are said to have stirred alarm in Washington.

The initial reports led to fears that the Soviets had launched a missile from a place where rockets were not known to be based, or even had detonated "a small nuclear device", Mr Reed writes in his book.

While some of the details of the CIA's counter-offensive have emerged before, the sabotage of the gas pipeline has remained a secret until now. Mr Reed told the Post he had CIA approval to make the disclosures.

Mr Vetrov's spying was discovered by the KGB and he was executed in 1983.

UNSC to vote on resolution condemning Russia accession referenda

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will vote Friday on a resolution condemning the referenda on the accession of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia.

The resolution drafted by the United States and Albania has no chance of passing thanks to Moscow's veto power, though it can then be presented to the United Nations General Assembly.

The text, seen by AFP, "condemns the Russian Federation's organization of illegal so-called referenda" in Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson, claiming that they "have no validity" and "cannot form the basis for any alteration of the status of these regions," including "any purported annexation."

It calls on member states not to recognize any accession to Russia and demands Moscow "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine."

The meeting is set for 3:00 pm (1900 GMT) Friday, ahead of another discussion on the leaks discovered in the Nord Stream gas pipeline, and the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin is to hold a formal ceremony at the Kremlin on the accession.

In the same context, all eyes will be on the responses from India and China. The two countries in February abstained from voting on a resolution condemning Russia's military operation in Ukraine, but China earlier this week called for the "territorial integrity" of all countries to be respected.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday condemned the accessions as a "dangerous escalation" that has "no place in the modern world."

On Tuesday, the results of the referenda on the accession of the LPR, DPR, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions to Russia were released by Moscow.

The head of the regional electoral committee in the Zaporozhye, Galina Katyushchenko, announced that 93.11% of voters supported accession to Russia, as 100% of ballots have been counted in the region.

In the LPR, 98.42% of voters backed accession to Russia, as per the head of the regional electoral committee, Elena Kravchenko.

In the Kherson region, 87.05% of voters supported the accession, according to the head of the regional election commission, Marina Zakharova.

With all referenda counted, DPR reported 99.23% of voters in favor of becoming part of Russia.

US, NATO, and EU will not recognize results of referenda

It is noteworthy that the United States and NATO had announced that they will not recognize the results of the referenda in the four regions.

"These referenda are an affront to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that underpin the international system," considered US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, adding that "if this does transpire, the United States will never recognize Russia's claims to any purportedly annexed parts of Ukraine."

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also pointed out that the referenda will be viewed as illegitimate calling on the international community to denounce them.

"Sham referendums have no legitimacy and do not change the nature of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This is a further escalation in Putin’s war. The international community must condemn this blatant violation of international law & step up support for Ukraine," Stoltenberg claimed.

On his part, EU foreign policy Chief Josep Borell said that all those involved in referenda to join Russia and other "violations of international law" in Ukraine will be held accountable, saying that "Russia, its political leadership, and all those involved in these 'referenda' and other violations of international law in Ukraine will be held accountable, and additional restrictive measures against Russia would be considered."

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Thursday that the US is exploring a fresh military aid package for Kiev with partners, including training for the Ukrainian military.

"As you've seen us do over time, we have continued to look for ways along with our international partners to provide additional security assistance to Ukraine. The Nord Stream AG pipeline operator told Sputnik on Monday that a dispatcher had registered a rapid gas pressure drop on Line A of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The incident occurred near the Danish island of Bornholm. Later that day, the operator reported a pressure drop on both strings of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

Authorities in Sweden and Denmark reported submarine explosions, with the general consensus being that the occurrence was the product of sabotage. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office, as well as authorities in Sweden and Denmark, are looking into the occurrences.

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev stated on Friday at a meeting of the heads of intelligence agencies of the CIS countries, after the fourth explosion hit the Nord Stream pipelines, that the United States is the main beneficiary of the emergency situation.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova told the Soloviev Live TV show on Thursday, "Speaking of where [the incident] occurred. <…There have been allegations that those are neutral waters and so on. Italy lambasts Germany's protective energy plan

As Germany recently announced earlier its 200 billion euro ($194-billion) plan to help businesses and households from rising energy prices, Italy's outgoing PM Mario Draghi and Giorgia Meloni found fault in the plan while calling for Europe to come together in solidarity.

"Faced with the common threats of our times, we cannot divide ourselves according to the amount of room in our national budgets," said Draghi in a press statement on Thursday.

Yesterday, Germany announced a 200-billion-euro ($194-billion) package with the aim of "protecting households and businesses" from surging energy prices. Germany's Finance Minister Christian Lindner had told reporters that Germany is in the midst of an "energy war over prosperity and freedom" with Russia, adding that the package is a "crystal clear answer to Putin that… we are strong economically".

Draghi told reporters that "The energy crisis requires a response from Europe to reduce costs for families and businesses, to limit exceptional gains made by producers and importers, to avoid dangerous and unjustified distortions of the internal market, and to keep Europe united once against in the face of an emergency."

On Friday, the Italian Minister for Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani reaffirmed Rome's support for an EU-wide cap on the price of gas.

"Everyone has recognized that there is a priority at the moment, which is to bring down the cost of gas. But there is also a second priority, to avoid in doing so creating a shortage of gas," Cingolani said.

Draghi has likewise been supportive of this proposal. His possible successor, Giorgia Meloni, whose far-right Brothers of Italy party won elections last Sunday, also expressed a similar stance.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, she expressed positive views about the price-cap suggestion. She also criticized Germany and called for a common EU response to the energy crisis.

"We need a common solution at the European level to help firms and families," she said. "No member state can offer effective and long-term solutions on its own in the absence of a common strategy, not even those that appear less financially vulnerable," she said.

According to S&P Global Ratings, Italy and Germany are now the two largest European countries most exposed to a gas supply shock due to their extensive use of natural gas and significant reliance on Russia.

Surging costs of power linked to gas prices have already stunted the production of various industries, such as fertilizers and aluminum manufacturers, and prompted EU governments, such as Germany, to increase their spending by billions in order to help their citizens.

The German Federal Statistical Office Destatis released Thursday provisional data revealing that inflation in Germany is expected to rise to a record high of 10% in annual terms in September, up to 7.9% a month earlier.

On September 10, the General Confederation of Italian Artisans (CGIA), an Italian trade union, revealed that households and companies are losing an extra 82.6 billion euros ($83.8 billion) over the surging electricity and gas prices.

The CGIA also said that the government is likely to pass an $83.8 billion relief package to tackle the soaring costs of energy, the union revealed.

On September 11, Roberto Cingolani told the Italian newspaper la Repubblica that "Capping only Russian gas makes no sense. It is currently delivered to Europe in very small quantities."

"In any case, we should give a signal to all producers. Europe imports three-quarters of pipeline natural gas. It is fair that it, as the world's largest buyer, should help set the price to protect businesses and citizens," he added.

Experts predicted that the energy crisis to further worsen since the G7 agreed in September 3 to impose a price cap on Russian oil.

Court documents show Musk and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey discussed changes to the platform prior to the $44 billion buyout

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey had communicated privately about the social media platform well before the former made a $44 billion buyout offer, newly revealed court records show.

A set of text messages exchanged between the two appeared to show Dorsey having tried to get Musk onto Twitter’s board at least a year before the Tesla CEO offered to buy the company outright this past April.

In a text sent on March 26, 2022, Dorsey wrote to Musk that “a new platform is needed. It can’t be a company. That’s why I left.” He explained that he thinks Twitter should be an “open-sourced protocol” and can’t be based around an advertising model, as most social media companies are.

Musk replied by saying he would “like to help if I’m able,” to which Dorsey said that he had already tried to get the Tesla CEO involved with the company a year earlier. “You care so much, get its importance and could def help in immeasurable ways,” Dorsey told Musk before revealing that the “risk averse” board had rejected the idea.

Russia demanded under the BWC, during a UNSC meeting that took place on Friday, September 30, that the US come forward with clarifications regarding its biological program, stressing that Washington has to be fully transparent on its military biological program to ensure that it is legitimate, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov told the heads of intelligence agencies of the CIS countries during a meeting on Friday.

Lavrov slammed the US as having "something to hide."

Moscow announced back in May that it will activate Articles 5 and 6 of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) to investigate the Biolabs in Ukraine after it accumulated evidence indicating that the US and Ukraine are both in violation of the BWC.

US admits to bio-activities in Ukraine

On Monday, September 19, Russian MoD presented evidence in Geneva proving that the US has military-biological activity in Ukraine. Chief of the Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, Igor Kirillov, said, "The participants of the meeting received copies of real documents previously mentioned by the Ministry of Defense of Russia, as well as material evidence confirming the implementation of work on military-biological programs in Ukraine, for consideration."

The US admitted to having carried out biological activities in Ukraine, however, it claimed that it was in support of the BWC, and according to US State Department spokesperson Ned Price, technical experts from the United States worked with Ukrainian delegations and "unambiguously" explained their cooperation. Allegedly, the cooperative effort was conducted as part of the broader US Cooperative Threat Reduction Program and also included US assistance to Ukraine related to public health facilities, biosafety, biosecurity, and disease surveillance.

However, US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland refused to cooperate with the Russian parliamentary commission on the operations of US biological laboratories in Ukraine, despite earlier admitting during a senate meeting that, "Ukraine has biological research facilities."

Deputy Speaker of Russia's Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev stated that "we turned to Ms. Nuland. Her office categorically refused to interact with the commission, with some propaganda clichés such as, you'd better take care of yourself and look at yourself - completely unconvincing," adding, "And we have not received, of course, any substantive answers to the questions that we have formulated [to the US side on the activities of facilities]."

In early September, Kirillov stated that the United States is planning on transferring its programs of biological research from Ukraine to post-Soviet republics, as well as Eastern European and Baltic states. "The Pentagon is poised to shortly relocate the programs unfinished in Ukraine to other post-Soviet states, as well as to Eastern European states, such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic states," Kirillov said.

It's noteworthy that back in March, the Defense Ministry Spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov revealed that Kiev was urgently covering up traces of a military biological program carried out in Ukraine and funded by the Pentagon. Konashenkov told reporters that "during the special military operation, [Russia] revealed the facts of an urgent sweep by the Kiev regime of traces of a military biological program being implemented in Ukraine, financed by the US Defense Ministry,” adding that, "the documents received to confirm that the development of biological weapon components was carried out in Ukrainian biological laboratories in the direct vicinity of the territory of Russia."

The French newspaper OrientXXI published an investigation that revealed the involvement of major French companies in killing children in Yemen, profiting from the war, with the support of the French government, which is - after the United States - the most important arms supplier to the Saudi-Emirati coalition involved in the war on Yemen since 2015.

According to the investigation, the French government authorized, in 2019 alone, 47 export contracts for missiles, guided bombs, and other explosive materials, with a total value of one billion euros (around $974 million) to Saudi Arabia and 3.5 billion euros (around $3.4 million) to the United Arab Emirates. In 2020, these licenses increased by 40% for Saudi Arabia and 25% for the UAE.

The investigation confirmed that three major French companies and their contractors were involved in a conflict that killed 110,000 people in 7 years, including more than 13,000 civilians, namely, the Thales Group, which equips fighter planes and supplies munitions, the French-British missile manufacturer MBDA, and Dassault Aviation, which provides the maintenance of the Mirage 2000 and has landed record-breaking contracts with the Emirates.

Meanwhile, since the start of the military intervention of the Saudi-led coalition against the Yemenis in March 2015, the French government has been trying to deny its involvement. In January 2019, then-Secretary of the Armed Forces Florence Parly assured public radio station France Inter, “We have not recently sold any weapons that might be used in the Yemeni conflict.”

A few months later, on April 15, 2019, an inquiry conducted by Global Investigative Journalism Network, DISCLOSE, proved the opposite, by basing its findings on a report from the Directorate of Military Intelligence. Not only did French planes, helicopters, tanks, and canons take part in the coalition attacks, but these weapons have also been used to target civilian areas.

The investigation stated that the French government still refuses to reveal details of the weapons that have already been supplied to each foreign country. However, its public reports submitted each year to Parliament highlight the importance of trade with two of the most interventionist countries in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which are respectively the third and fifth largest customers of French arms. These reports tell that between 2015 and 2021, France supplied military equipment, munitions, and maintenance services valued at about 9 billion euros to these two countries, which lead the coalition against the Yemenis.

However, officials in some member countries “have already attributed the destruction to Russia, without providing evidence,” the report says.

The US and EU have already stated the will NEVER allow Ukraine in NATO. Their original intent was for Russia to blow up Ukraine, because Ukraine has dirt on every world leader.
