In 1975, as chairman of the Senate Select Committee to Study Government Operations With Respect to Intelligence Activities, Frank Church uncovered widespread abuses of power and illegal surveillance activities by the CIA, FBI, and NSA. Church's activities inspired reevaluations by the House of Representatives of the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., that later concluded that there were possible conspiracies in both killings. Church's investigations brought to light some of the most subterranean activities of the U.S. government.

Richard Schweiker chaired a subcommittee under the Church Committee, related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Did Joe Biden’s aphasiac gaffe yesterday — and the White House’s bizarre attempts to deny it — finally break the dam on purposeful media ignorance of his cognitive condition? Apparently at Comedy Central, it did — for one night, anyway.

 

Trevor Noah seized on Biden’s “Where’s Jackie?” callout for deceased Republican representative Jackie Walorski. Noah joked that Biden was really looking for Jackie O, and that Osama bin Laden could be next. “At least he noticed she wasn’t there,” Noah sarcastically riffed:

 

“Noooo! Nooo! Joe, what are you doing!” said Noah, followed by a moan. “So awkward.”

 

Noah went on to mock Biden for the mistake.

 

“And his explanation didn’t help. You know, it was like, of course, I knew Jackie was there. I was looking for Jackie Kennedy. Where’s Jackie Kennedy? Where are you, Jackie? Where’s Jackie O.?” said Noah. “Look, at least on the upside at least he noticed that she wasn’t there. This is a good thing. Yeah, could’ve been much [worse] if he was like ‘Where’s Jackie? There she is! There’s Jackie! Everyone look at Jackie! She’d be like ‘there’s no Jackie.’ She’s there, everybody sees Jackie!”

 

Noah went on to sarcastically say that the gaffe “makes Biden a better president.”

 

“Think of how hard he must be working now to keep Americans safe knowing that Osama bin Laden is still out there somewhere,” he said. “Where is he? Where is he, Jackie? Where is he?”

Netflix has stripped the LGBTQ label off a documentary about an infamous gay serial killer, ''with critics claiming that the tag would foster negative associations with the gay community. ''

 

The streaming service had initially appended the label to its documentary "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." Dahmer was a U.S. serial killer whose brutal Milwaukee-area crimes involved ''necrophilia, cannibalism, and ultimately the murder of nearly 20 men and boys'' in the 1980s and 1990s.

 

Persistent criticism on social media appears to have led Netflix to strip the title of its LGBTQ tag at some point over the last week.

 

"[A]nyone else think it's pretty gross of [Netflix] to list Dahmer under [LGBTQ]?" one Twitter user wrote, with others calling the decision "slanderous" and "truly disgusting."

 

Dahmer was convicted of his crimes in 1992. He was beaten to death in prison in 1994 at age 34.

Webb’s Icy Instrument Reveals Complex Structures

This spectacular image features the spiral galaxy IC 5332, shown here in unprecedented detail thanks to observations from the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI), which is mounted on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. IC 5332 lies over 29 million light-years from Earth, and has a diameter of roughly 66 000 light-years, making it about a third smaller than the Milky Way. It is notable for being almost perfectly face-on with respect to Earth, allowing us to admire the symmetrical sweep of its spiral arms.

 

MIRI is the only Webb instrument that is sensitive to the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum (specifically in the 5 µm – 28 µm wavelength range); Webb’s other instruments all operate in the near-infrared. One of MIRI’s most remarkable features is that it operates 33 °C below the rest of the observatory at the frosty temperature of –266 °C. That means that MIRI operates in an environment only 7 °C warmer than absolute zero, which is the lowest possible temperature according to the laws of thermodynamics. MIRI requires this frigid environment in order for its highly specialised detectors to function correctly, and it has a dedicated active cooling system to ensure that its detectors are kept at the correct temperature.

 

It is worth noting just how challenging it is to obtain observations in the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The mid-infrared is incredibly difficult to observe from Earth as much of it is absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, and heat from Earth’s atmosphere further complicates things. Hubble could not observe the mid-infrared region as its mirrors were not cool enough, meaning that infrared radiation from the mirrors themselves would have dominated any attempted observations. The extra effort made to ensure that MIRI’s detectors had the freezing environment necessary to operate properly is evident in this stunning image.

 

This extravagantly detailed mid-infrared image is juxtaposed here with a beautiful ultraviolet and visible-light image of the same galaxy, created using data collected by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). Some differences are immediately obvious. The Hubble image shows dark regions that seem to separate the spiral arms, whereas the Webb image shows more of a continual tangle of structures that echo the spiral arms’ shape. This difference is due to the presence of dusty regions in the galaxy. Ultraviolet and visible light are far more prone to being scattered by interstellar dust than infrared light. Therefore dusty regions can be identified easily in the Hubble image as the darker regions that much of the galaxy’s ultraviolet and visible light has not been able to travel through. Those same dusty regions are no longer dark in the Webb image, however, as the mid-infrared light from the galaxy has been able to pass through them. Different stars are visible in the two images, which can be explained because certain stars shine brighter in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared regimes respectively. The images complement one another in a remarkable way, each telling us more about IC 5332’s structure and composition.

Hurricane Ian is just hours away (as of this writing) from barreling straight through an area of Florida where at least 50 percent of the nation’s phosphate fertilizer supply is mined and produced.

 

Mosaic Co. operates numerous mines in an area east of Tampa and north-northeast of Fort Myers where the Category 4 hurricane – Ian’s maximum recorded wind speeds were just a few miles per hour (mph) short of reaching Category 5 – made landfall, bringing with it catastrophic damage.

 

The storm surge alone is reportedly causing catastrophic damage to Sanibel, Englewood, Venice and other areas, not to mention all the heavy winds and rain. And that very same carnage is headed straight for fertilizer alley (though at that point it will admittedly be slightly less severe).

 

Florida’s fertilizer alley is replete with phosphate rock assets, which are turned into fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) – check out the company report to learn more.

 

Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler with Enki Research, indicated that Mosaic’s New Wales plant is “right in the middle of the damage swatch.” He added that the plant could “be out for weeks,” depending on the level of damage.

 

With food prices already sky-high and energy issues depleting global fertilizer supplies, this unfortunate new development is nothing short of ominous for the global food supply. (Related: The United Nations is expecting grain production worldwide to plummet by 40 percent due to lack of fertilizer.)

 

Is America about to join the rest of the world in descending towards famine and starvation?

 

Mosaic reportedly owns more than half of the 15.86 million metric tons of DAP and MAP production capacity in the United States, a bulk of which is in Florida in the path of Ian.

 

Back in 2017, Hurricane Irma impacted some of that capacity, reducing Mosaic’s production of phosphate by 400,000 metric tons. Competitor Potash Corp., also located in Florida, was shut down for four days due to Irma.

 

Ian is shaping up to be just as devastating as Irma – or perhaps worse. Ian will almost certainly be worse than Irma as far as America’s fertilizer production capacity is concerned.

 

“Fertilizer can make or break crop production,” reports Bloomberg.

 

“Global food prices have touched records in recent months as inflation ripples through economies and hunger levels rise. The cost of growing food in the U.S. is set to rise by the most ever in 2022 as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine put a huge percentage of the world’s supply at risk.”

 

A U.S. duty on Russian and Moroccan phosphate producers means that the nation could have to buy expensive imports from elsewhere, should Ian devastate fertilizer alley to the point that production goes offline for an extended period of time.

 

Up until now, the fertilizer crisis has mostly affected places outside America’s borders. That now appears to be changing, thanks to Ian.

 

The latest reports reveal that Mosaic evacuated several of its Florida operations in anticipation of Ian’s arrival. All facilities, the company claims, were secured before being abandoned due to the storm.

 

The affected facilities are expected to remain closed for a least a week after Ian passes, with an expected revenue decrease of between $240 million and $300 million.

 

Ammonia imports from Yara International and CF Industries at Tampa are also expected to slow, depending on Ian’s aftermath.

 

“Think the food crisis is bad now? Just wait,” wrote a commenter at Natural News about the fertilizer crisis, which is about to reach new heights thanks to Ian.

 

“The fertilizer problem will significantly drop crop harvests and that will raise the price and availability of food dramatically starting next year.”
