Milwaukee elections official fired over ballot fraud

A Milwaukee elections official has been fired after allegedly requesting military ballots for fake voters.

Kimberly Zapata, the deputy director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, was terminated from the role after using bogus names to request the ballots and sending them to Republican state Rep. Janel Brandtjen, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced Thursday.

"I will not accept, I will not tolerate, and I certainly will not defend any misrepresentation by a city official involved in elections. It does not matter that this might have been an effort to expose a vulnerability that state law created. It does not matter that this alleged crime did not take place at work. It does not matter that City of Milwaukee ballots were not part of this. Nor does it matter that there was no attempt to vote illegally or tamper with election results," Johnson said in a lengthy Twitter thread Thursday.

Brandtjen announced earlier this week that she found the ballots delivered to her on Oct. 27. She also said she believed that someone appeared to be trying to make a point about the military ballot process.

"I believe someone was trying to point out how easy it is to get military ballots in Wisconsin. Registration for military ballots is not required, so a fictitious name and birth date is all that is required to obtain a military ballot online," Brandtjen said in a statement Monday. "Feeling shocked about this situation is an understatement because it demonstrates stolen valor from those who protect this nation. I think it’s sad that people feel they have to break the law to get the attention of the legislature. This is now the second time citizens have tried to point out loopholes in our elections."

Wisconsin features two closely watched contests with the Senate race and the gubernatorial faceoff.

In the gubernatorial race, Republican Tim Michels leads Democratic Gov. Tony Evers by 0.2 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics polling average, while in the Senate race, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) leads Democratic Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes by 3.2 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics polling average.

Update:Milwaukee Election Commission official Kimberly Zapata charged with felony and misdemeanor counts over fraudulent military ballots

A Milwaukee election official could face criminal charges accusing her of fraudulently requesting absentee ballots reserved for members of the military and sending them to a Republican lawmaker known for embracing unfounded conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

Milwaukee Election Commission Deputy Director Kimberly Zapata, 45, of Milwaukee was fired by Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson this week after Johnson discovered she had requested the ballots. Johnson said Zapata's actions may have been to show voter fraud was possible.

"This has every appearance of being an egregious and blatant violation of trust," Johnson said. "Election integrity is absolutely integral. It's absolutely essential."

Milwaukee County prosecutors are considering charging Zapata with malfeasance in office, a felony, and illegally requesting a ballot, a misdemeanor, a source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

District Attorney John Chisholm said in a statement his office is reviewing the election fraud allegations and that prosecutors "expect charges to be filed in the coming days."

Johnson held a news conference Thursday but left before reporters were finished asking questions about the matter.

Kimberly Zapata's actions revealed while Election Day 2022 draws near

The revelation comes five days before the Nov. 8 midterm election, a potentially explosive development at a time when Republicans have cast doubt on the security of absentee voting, and in Milwaukee in particular, ever since former President Donald Trump began falsely accusing Milwaukee election officials of rigging the 2020 election.

At Thursday's news conference, Johnson said he learned Wednesday that Zapata “apparently sought fictitious military ballots” from a state elections website and directed them to Brandtjen.

Zapata’s actions may have been an effort to expose vulnerability in the state election system, he said.

“It does not matter to me that the alleged crime did not take place at work,” he said. “It does not matter to me that the city of Milwaukee ballots were not a part of this, nor does it matter that there was no attempt to vote illegally or tamper with any election results.”

Michael Maistelman, who is representing Zapata, declined to answer questions.

"We will litigate this in the courtroom, not the media," said Maistelman, who often represents Democrats including Gov. Tony Evers.

City officials revoked Zapata’s access to city offices and computer systems when they learned of her actions and she was fired, Johnson said.

He said while there is no other indication of violations by Zapata, city officials are “looking into the possibility of other misdeeds.”

Who is Kimberly Zapata?

Zapata had been with the Election Commission for about seven years and the city about 10, Milwaukee Election Commission Executive Director Claire Woodall-Vogg said.

She was appointed deputy director of the Election Commission this summer.

“Up until this point, we have never had any indication of any type of violation of work policies or procedures,” Woodall-Vogg said. “We, of course, will be taking an extra look at that, but up until this point she has been forthcoming and we don’t have any indication of any concerns at this point. That’s not to say that we won’t be looking at every aspect of elections she’s been involved in.”

Johnson's spokesman, Jeff Fleming, said at this point the city Election Commission is leading the review but that others inside and outside city government are also expected to look into previous elections with which Zapata was involved.

He declined to answer questions about why Zapata apparently approached city officials, who she spoke with, and when the ballots were sent. Fleming instead directed questions to Maistelman or the district attorney's office, which declined to provide additional details about the case.

Asked how they learned of Zapata’s actions, Woodall-Vogg said “the employee was forthcoming.”

Under state law, military voters are not required to register to vote and do not have to provide photo ID or any other identification.

“It’s my belief that she was pointing out that you can go onto the public system, make up a person and request a ballot,” Woodall-Vogg said, adding that city officials’ understanding is that she sent it to Brandtjen to alert her to the system’s vulnerability.

Johnson said faith in Milwaukee’s elections should not be shaken because city officials were forthcoming about what had happened and Zapata was immediately fired.

At that point, he and Woodall-Vogg left as reporters shouted questions.

Zapata's termination means Woodall-Vogg will instead oversee the city's central count operation, where all the absentee ballots are tallied on Nov. 8.

Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator Meagan Wolfe said late Thursday no other ballots, beyond those in question, have been affected by Zapata's actions.

"This violation of trust cuts to the heart of election integrity, something that the Wisconsin Elections Commission and local election officials hold in the most serious regard," Wolfe said. "While the actions of this individual set us all back in our efforts to show Wisconsinites that our elections are run with integrity, I have every confidence the upcoming election will be fair and accurate."

“While this case understandably will receive a lot of attention, the fact remains that election fraud is extremely rare, and when it does occur, it is quickly discovered, and there are consequences."

Eight of Milwaukee’s 11 council members in a statement applauded Johnson’s decision to fire Zapata, calling her actions “shocking, sad and extremely disappointing.”

“Although she apparently did this outside of work and on her own time, that fact does NOT matter. Her actions leave a stain on the Election Commission and city government that is hurtful and unwarranted, but nonetheless damaging,” wrote Alds. Michael Murphy, Robert Bauman, Milele Coggs, JoCasta Zamarripa, Mark Borkowski, Scott Spiker and Marina Dimitrijevic, along with council President José G. Pérez.

Still, they wrote, they continued to have faith in the city's election workers, system and overall operation.

A Republican Party of Wisconsin spokesman said in a statement that election officials need to follow the law but also raised concerns about the state's online system where voters can request absentee ballots and more.

"The vulnerabilities that continue to be exposed in the MyVote system for requesting absentee ballots should be shocking to everyone,” said party spokesman Chad Doran said.

State Rep. Janel Brandtjen contacted law enforcement after receiving three absentee ballots she did not request

On Monday, the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department announced it was investigating who requested absentee ballots on behalf of members of the military and had them sent to the home of state Rep. Janel Brandtjen of Menomonee Falls.

Brandtjen, who leads the Assembly's elections committee, said Monday she believed the episode involved someone copying the actions of a Racine County man who says he believes voter fraud robbed Donald Trump of a victory in 2020 and wanted to prove election fraud is possible.

On Thursday, Brandtjen suggested Zapata's actions shed light on problems that lawmakers need to address.

"We have uncovered so many issues that demand attention. I have been attacked by the liberal media, Democrats who benefit from the system, and Republicans who don’t have the backbone to take on the issues, including Speaker Vos, who has referred to me as a conspiracy theorist," Brandtjen said, referring to Assembly Speaker Robin Vos.

Brandtjen said Monday she contacted law enforcement and former Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who oversaw a partisan review of the 2020 election, after she received three ballots from clerks in Menomonee Falls, where Brandtjen lives, South Milwaukee and Shorewood to three different women with the first name Holly.

The Sheriff's Department is working with the Waukesha County district attorney to investigate, the department said Monday.

"We are still gathering the WEC data regarding Rep. Brandtjen’s concerns that she outlined in her recent press release. We plan to work with our law enforcement partners as appropriate to address the allegations," Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Riley Vetterkind said in a statement on Monday.

Republican candidate for governor Tim Michels, who is endorsed by Trump and has endorsed his false claims about the 2020 election, said Thursday he would replace the Wisconsin Elections Commission with a "Wisconsin Election Integrity Group" that included members from the state's eight congressional districts, five of which are represented by Republicans.

Michels suggested he would not seek to eliminate the state's MyVote website for requesting absentee ballots, which Zapata and Wait used to commit election fraud.

Before knowing who was at fault, Brandtjen characterized the episode as an effort to expose loopholes in election law, comparing it to crimes alleged against Harry Wait, a leader of a Racine County-based group known as H.O.T. Government that promotes false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Wait was charged earlier this year with two counts of election fraud and two counts of unauthorized use of an individual's personal identifying information for posing as Vos and Racine Mayor Cory Mason to request their ballots in order to show violations of the law are possible.

Before his first court appearance in the matter in September, Wait compared himself to founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

"My actions are in the spirit of organic law of this nation, upon which was founded taking action in civil disobedience," he told reporters in a news conference. "I have acted in a similar manner as the founder of this nation acted. For that reason, I am certain my actions are indeed both lawful and under organic law of the nation."

On Monday, a post in Wait's group's social media channel called Brandtjen a "patriot" for highlighting what the group calls problems with the state's system to request absentee ballots. To change the process for military members would require lawmakers to take action. Under state law, military members are exempt from registering to vote or providing photo identification.

After news broke Thursday about Zapata, Wait commended her. He wrote online that he saluted her "due to her efforts to expose more voting vulnerabilities in MyVote."

As chairwoman of the elections committee, Brandtjen has repeatedly held hearings promoting false claims of voter fraud and 2020 election conspiracy theories.

"If another Republican has committed election fraud, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I hope whoever did this is caught so we can send a clear message that this will not be tolerated," Democratic state Rep. Mark Spreitzer of Beloit, a member of the Assembly elections committee, said in a statement. "For obvious reasons, military voters need to be able to vote absentee, and we should not tolerate anyone who wants to make our service members pawns for their political agenda."

US Announces $400 Million in New Security Assistance for Ukraine

The Biden administration announced $400 million in new security assistance for Ukraine, including refurbished Soviet-era T-72 tanks, HAWK air defense missiles and more of the “Phoenix Ghost” drones that have been effective against Russian forces in the east. The US and the Netherlands will split the cost of refurbishing 90 T-72 tanks, a job that will be done in the Czech Republic, Defense Department deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters. SPAC Sponsors That ‘Piled In’ During Boom May Face $4 Billion Tab

Blank-check sponsors that jumped on the bandwagon to cash in on the SPAC boom may be stuck with a roughly $4 billion bill as they close up shop and return money to investors. That’s on top of the estimated $352 million they’ve already lost this year. The SPAC craze was a goldmine for sponsors like “SPAC King” Chamath Palihapitiya and Howard Lutnick (Rumble's new $ via Cantor Fitzgerald)They were early to the game and benefited from a bull market that bolstered the industry with investors eager to pay large premiums for a pile of cash. Now that the bubble has burst, sponsors who “piled in during the boom in 2021” could lose billions, according to Jay Ritter, professor of finance at the University of Florida. Sponsors on average could lose about $8 million of at-risk capital mostly fees for underwriters and others on each liquidation, Ritter says. With 646 active SPACs either hunting for targets or pushing to complete them, and an average of roughly eight deals completed a month this year, he expects more than 80% of SPACs will need to close down. That would result in losses of about $4.1 billion across the failed ventures. But that number may be closer to $5 billion given most recent SPACs essentially paid investors extra for buying into the initial public offering, Ritter says. So far this year, 44 SPACs have closed and returned the billions they raised to investors, compared to just one over the same period in 2021. Dozens more are working to close up shop before the end of the year.

Alec Gores, one of the most well-respected sponsors, said Thursday that three of his SPACs, which raised a combined $1.3 billion last year, want to shutter soon. While the firm is “committed to the SPAC product in the long-term,” it acknowledged the “current reset in the SPAC market is necessary in light of the activity over the past two years,” Gores said in a statement.

The issues for SPACs include a closed window for traditional IPOs and a battered economy, as well as pressures from US regulators. Before the boom days resulted in more than 800 new SPACs in a two-year period, the market had presented a niche opportunity for companies that wanted to go public without some of the caveats of an IPO. That turned upside down when stuck-at-home retail traders flush with cash and Wall Street pros looking to turn a quick profit took them mainstream. The fallout from failed efforts has hit experienced teams, those with little to no SPAC experience and the countless firms that tied their hopes to celebrities and athletes. Both Palihapitiya and Bill Foley have given up one two SPACs recently. Financier Patrick Orlando is clamoring to close the deal between Digital World Acquisition Corp. and Donald Trump’s media venture to avoid a third failed venture. (and this is just a statement but of course it is about DWAC-look these (SPACs) always were the unwanted stepchildren of the financial world as if you couldn't go the traditional IPO route you had this as an option so they "became ok" because Wall St. had run out of options to keep shoveling shit out so the stigma was taken off of these-now you are starting to see why they had it in the first place-many Co's that should have not been anywhere near public went via this route so what you have (in DWAC's case) is people who have bought DWAC just because it has an affiliation with 45 via Trump Media and Technology Group and he really has no say in where the stock price goes obviously and very little input, if any, into the actual running of this SPAC-so if you got burned by buying shares in the $90's and still have them you've no one to blame but yourself-this was a pump and dump thing arranged by the Market Makers to purposefully suck in 45 supporters who don't (and still don't understand how this all werks) so you'll know moar on Nov 22)

To be sure, many sponsors in the early days reaped massive benefits from their ventures. For the 284 SPACs that completed deals or closed from 2015 to September 2021, sponsors had an average net payoff of at least $46 million, according to a paper from Ritter and Minmo Gahng and Donghang Zhang. That means their total profits over that stretch were about $13 billion.

NGC 6357: The Lobster Nebula

Why is the Lobster Nebula forming some of the most massive stars known? No one is yet sure. Cataloged as NGC 6357, the Lobster Nebula houses the open star cluster Pismis 24 near its center – a home to unusually bright and massive stars. The overall red glow near the inner star forming region results from the emission of ionized hydrogen gas. The surrounding nebula, featured here, holds a complex tapestry of gas, dark dust, stars still forming, and newly born stars. The intricate patterns are caused by complex interactions between interstellar winds, radiation pressures, magnetic fields, and gravity. The image was taken with DOE's Dark Energy Camera on the 4-meter Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. NGC 6357 spans about 400 light years and lies about 8,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Scorpion.

A Partial Eclipse of an Active Sun

Watch for three things in this unusual eclipse video. First, watch for a big dark circle to approach from the right to block out more and more of the Sun. This dark circle is the Moon, and the video was made primarily to capture this partial solar eclipse last week. Next, watch a large solar prominence hover and shimmer over the Sun's edge. A close look will show that part of it is actually falling back to the Sun. The prominence is made of hot plasma that is temporarily held aloft by the Sun's changing magnetic field. Finally, watch the Sun's edge waver. What is wavering is a dynamic carpet of hot gas tubes rising and falling through the Sun's chromosphere – tubes known as spicules. The entire 4-second time-lapse video covers a time of about ten minutes, although the Sun itself is expected to last another 5 billion years.

M33: The Triangulum Galaxy

The small, northern constellation Triangulum harbors this magnificent face-on spiral galaxy, M33. Its popular names include the Pinwheel Galaxy or just the Triangulum Galaxy. M33 is over 50,000 light-years in diameter, third largest in the Local Group of galaxies after the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and our own Milky Way. About 3 million light-years from the Milky Way, M33 is itself thought to be a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy and astronomers in these two galaxies would likely have spectacular views of each other's grand spiral star systems. As for the view from the Milky Way, this sharp image combines data from telescopes on and around planet Earth to show off M33's blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions along the galaxy's loosely wound spiral arms. In fact, the cavernous NGC 604 is the brightest star forming region, seen here at about the 1 o'clock position from the galaxy center. Like M31, M33's population of well-measured variable stars have helped make this nearby spiral a cosmic yardstick for establishing the distance scale of the Universe.

Trump-Endorsed Arizona Gubernatorial Nominee Kari Lake responded to Hillary Clinton accusing her of laughing at Paul Pelosi on Thursday, telling the world, “I’m in perfect health. My brakes on my car are in good shape, and I am not suicidal.”

Many who have been close to the Clinton family have allegedly died mysteriously or “committed suicide” over the years.

This includes Jeffery Epstein, who Bill Clinton partied with on Epstein’s pedophile island. Clinton made at least 27 times trips on Jeffrey Epstein’s private plane. Most of those flights were with underage girls.

The Gateway Pundit reported on a complete list of Clinton associates who died mysteriously or committed suicide before their public testimony. The list contains nearly 50 names.

Evidently, this was too much for Hillary Clinton, who said this is “sadly a real indicator of where we are in our country right now.” Clinton then accused Lake of laughing at Paul Pelosi’s “attack.”

But anybody who looks at the story of David DePape and Paul Pelosi probably would laugh. This is perhaps the most bizarre occurrence of 2022, and the San Francisco District Attorney refuses to release any of the police bodycam footage or 911 audio.

If this happened to any conservative with no transparency, the left and late-night comedy shows would have a field day!

Lake responded to Clinton’s comments on Hannity yesterday, and it was hilarious.

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Twitter over Elon Musk’s plan to sack thousands of staffers — as employees were abruptly locked out of their company Slack and email accounts, and barred from going into the office ahead of the mass layoffs Friday.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in San Francisco federal court after the company notified employees it would eliminate some 3,700 jobs, half its workforce, Bloomberg News reported.

It alleges that employees weren’t given enough notice of the mass layoffs in violation of federal and California law.

It seeks an order requiring the social media platform to obey the WARN Act — the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, a federal law requiring companies with 100 or more workers to give 60 days’ notice of mass layoffs or other work disruptions.

‘Rotted At Its Core’: House Judiciary GOP Releases Massive 1,000-Page Report On Alleged FBI Misconduct

The report, titled “FBI Whistleblowers: What Their Disclosures Indicate About The Politicization of the FBI And The Justice Department,” began by stating that the FBI “is broken” under the leadership of Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, Wray’s superior, while also blaming the “politicized bureaucracy” of the agency. It accused Garland and Wray of overseeing an agency that “altered and mischaracterized evidence to federal courts, circumvented safeguards, and exploited weaknesses in policies.”

The report identifies several key areas for oversight as Republicans are poised to take the House majority after the midterm elections. Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight Committee have already promised investigations into the FBI and intelligence community over the handling of the investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings and the surveilling of school board meetings, among other topics.

In the executive summary, the report quoted FBI whistleblowers who spoke to Republican staff on the committee, led by Ranking Member Jim Jordan of Ohio, claiming that the FBI was “rotted at its core” and maintained a “systemic culture of unaccountability” as well as being full of “rampant corruption, manipulation, and abuse.” It also alleged that the FBI may be inflating statistics on the incidence of violent extremism across the country, as well as diverting resources away from criminal investigations towards more politically-relevant areas.

Israel jets fire several airstrikes against Gaza Strip

Israeli aircraft have fired several airstrikes against the Gaza Strip this morning, resulting in a power outage in some areas.

According to an Israeli army spokesman, the bombs came in response to the launching of rockets against Israel from Hamas.

However, there has been no immediate claim of responsibility.

The Israeli military claimed that four rockets were fired from Gaza, three of which did not reach Israeli territory, while one rocket was intercepted by air defence systems.

In response, Hazem Qasem, a spokesman for Hamas, said, "The barbaric Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip at dawn today is a blatant act of aggression, and represents an extension of its open war against our people in all the places we exist."

"Israeli bombing will only make Palestinians more determined to resist the occupation and step up their support for Jerusalem and its people," he added.

The attacks against Gaza come as residents of the enclave try to restore a semblance of normality to their lives following Israel's latest bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip that killed 49 Palestinians, including 17 children and four women.

Some 2.3 million Palestinians live in the narrow enclave. They are largely unable to leave to seek employment abroad, and have been squeezed by 15 years of a siege imposed by Israel.

The Occupation State has launched four major military offensives against the civilian population since 2008. Gaza also borders Egypt, which imposes its own restrictions on passage through the Rafah border crossing.

Recall that back in August and September, we showed that a stark divergence had opened between the Household and Establishment surveys that comprise the monthly jobs report, and since March the former has been stagnant while the latter has been rising every single month. In addition to that, full-time jobs were plunging while part-time jobs were soaring.

Fast forward to today when the inconsistencies not only continue to grow, but in some cases have becoming downright grotesque.

Consider the following: the closely followed Establishment survey came in above expectations at 261K, above the 195K expected, and down modestly from last month’s upward revised 319K…

…Alas, there is only so much the Department of Labor can hide under the rug because when looking at the abovementioned gap between the Household and Establishment surveys which we have been pounding the table on since the summer, it just blew out by a whopping 589K, the most since June’s 608K, as a result of the 261K increase in the number of nonfarm payrolls (tracked by the Household survey) offset by a perplexing plunge in the number of people actually employed which tumbled by 328K (tracked by Establishment survey).

Joel Benenson, the renowned pollster for President Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns, gave a first look at the results of a question he'd never asked before: "We wanted to test QAnon's language that the world is controlled by a secret cabal."

What he found: 44% of registered voters said they believe it.

"Given that the U.S. is the world's strongest democracy, we wanted to see how far the appeal of language like that might reach," Benenson said.

The figure is especially arresting because of this result in the same poll:

59% of voters agree that the U.S. is a strong democracy.

The breakdown: 66% of Democrats … 55% of Republicans … 54% of independents.
