poll workers had problems 'adapting to new procedures' and checking names against the voter rolls took time. Mine could not type accurately either (knuckle on tablet screen) & I had to correct her spelling and my date of birth while reading upside down.

about a half dozen voters dropped out of line during the wait.

Procedure was to select a candidate on a touchpad screen (one office per screen - 92+ screen), print votes out on two sheets of paper, and take printout to be scanned into the ballot box.

checked my selections on screen and then rechecked on the printout prior to the scan into the ballot box. No chance to see if the scan was accurate.

Most offices during this election were judges. I held my nose & voted for that POS Dan Crenshaw and would have preferred a stronger governor than Abbott to vote for, as well.

The most satisfaction was voting to kick out the corrupt petty tyrant Lina Hidalgo & put in a decent Alexandra Mealer.

DOJ targeted Harris county, but no DOJ observers were in sight at my precinct.

Israeli media: Ammonia leak detected in northern occupied Palestine

Israeli media reported Monday a leak of ammonia from a factory in the industrial zone, in the "Qiryat Shemona" illegal settlement, north of occupied Palestine.

The media indicated that five firefighting teams and a unit specialized in combating hazardous materials were deployed to the scene to deal with the accident.

On its part, Walla! website said an assessment of the situation was conducted, adding that the leak was contained after a series of measures.

The site also quoted the fire department as saying that no injuries were recorded as a result of the accident, clarifying that the leak does not pose a danger to the environment.

Israeli media reports indicated that the reasons for the ammonia leak are not yet clear.

It is noteworthy that in April 2021, Israeli media reported a leak of ammonia gas from a factory in the Bay of Haifa.

for some more info on the process; After they checked my ID, they gave me an access code to input into the voting machine, after I put that in I took my blank ballot paper which looked like a piece of paper with some black QR marks on it, almost like those scantrons we took at school but it was all blank expect those marking and the arrow. It had an arrow indicating that I put it in a certain way into this printer thing under my ballot selection screen / machine.

after I placed my votes it printed off my selections onto the sheet which I had put into the printer thing below me. I then took that printed paper over to a secondary device where you put it in and I assume scanned my ballot and uploaded it to a local DB.

11 French bishops indicted over charges of sexual assault

A church body announced on Monday that eleven French bishops have been indicted for committing acts of sexual violence. This includes an important figure in the Church of France, Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, who admitted to sexually assaulting a minor 35 years ago.

According to the president of the Bishops' Conference of France, Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, Cardinal Ricard, who was archbishop of Bordeaux from 2001 to 2019 and who became cardinal in 2006, admitted to the reprehensible crime of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old, adding that all the suspects involved in the charges will either face disciplinary procedures from the Church or legal prosecution.

According to Catholic News Services, Ricard said he asked the woman for forgiveness and asked for forgiveness from her family. He also said he was going on retreat to pray.

“This is a difficult process. But what comes first is the suffering experienced by the victims and the recognition of the acts committed,” he said.

“Finally, I ask forgiveness to those whom I have hurt and who will live this news as a real test,” he said.

The cardinal did not provide additional details.

The French bishops are currently meeting in Lourdes for their fall plenary session and will be discussing ways to improve transparency towards the clergy.

In 2021, a study revealed that abuse of minors was alarmingly widespread among priests, deacons, and lay members of the Church from the 1950s onwards.

The report further revealed that the Catholic clergy in France sexually abused an estimated 216,000 minors over the past seven decades, a number that climbed to 330,000 when claims against lay members of the Church were included, such as teachers at Catholic schools.

It condemned the Church for prioritizing the protection of the institution over victims and called on the Church to pay compensations.

Ricard retired as bishop of Bordeaux in 2019, but he remains a cardinal, a position usually held for life.

Dominion Machines in Mercer, NJ Experiencing “Programming Glitch”

Voting machines in Mercer, New Jersey are experiencing a “programming glitch” that is causing issues with the Dominion machines ability to process votes. Voters are not being turned away, but are being asked to fill out ballots manually and place them in the slot for manual counting later.

From the New Jersey Globe:

Voting machines throughout Mercer County are facing technical difficulties this morning, but no voters are being turned away and machine votes are still being cast.

The issue involves a programming glitch with optical scanners, which count votes after ballots are filled out.

Programmers from the voting machine manufacturer, Dominion, are in site trying to work through the problem, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.

“There is a slot on the top of the scanner and voters can vote and are voting manually,” said Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello. “We are asking poll workers to use the official ballots because they can still vote them manually, and place them in the slot in the scanning machines and we will count them manually.”

While issues with optical scanners won’t prevent voting — ballots are still being printed properly – it could delay the counting of votes tonight. That might impact the speed by which election return in Hamilton, Lawrence, East Windsor, Hightstown and Robbinsville – all towns in New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district potentially impedes counts in the closely watched House race between Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) and Republican Bob Healey.

In 2020 Mercer was a +40 Biden county. In the 2021 Governor’s race, Democrats lost 9 points over their 2020 performance in the county of 387,000 people. The turnout in 2021 was of course significantly less.

A tycoon who owns Tiffany jewelry empire in Turkey has died after plunging to her death from a cruise ship during a South Sea Islands holiday.

Dilek Ertek, 71 - the distributor of Tiffany in Turkey for more than 20 years - fell into the South Pacific off the coast of Tahiti from the Norwegian Spirit ship on October 26.

Respected Turkish newspaper Sabah reported that her family have urged police to investigate Miss Ertek's Swiss national lover, who was with her on the trip.

Her son Gokce Atuk says jewelry had gone missing from the safe in his mother's cabin.

And despite ship CCTV footage showing she probably fell at 3am, her unnamed lover only reported her missing some 20 hours later, according to local media.

Experts seem baffled over how Miss Ertek - who was just 5ft2 and tee-total - was able to fall over the 3ft-high guard rail to her cabin.

The 74-year-old partner was kept under observation by the ship's crew in a separate cabin before they then docked in Tahiti three days later.

He was reportedly questioned by police in Tahiti before being released due to a lack of evidence. He has since returned to Switzerland.

A search at sea for Miss Ertek's body has been discontinued.

Miss Ertek had boarded the vessel on October 24 in Papeete Island, French Polynesia, to celebrate her birthday in Bora Bora, a small South Pacific island on November 5.

The cruise was set to end in Honolulu, in Hawaii.

Snowden reveals ‘most important video of the year’

The whistleblower shared an old clip of former CIA officer Frank Snepp detailing how the agency planted stories in the media

US National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden says a 1983 interview with former CIA officer Frank Snepp, detailing how the agency used mainstream newspapers in the US to distribute disinformation, is still the “most important video of the year.”

Snowden, who currently lives in Russia after gaining citizenship in the country, posted a short clip from Snepp’s interview on Monday. In the video, the former intelligence officer explained how he had served as an interrogator, agent debriefer and chief strategy analyst while working in the US embassy in Saigon during the Vietnam War.

Snepp said one his duties was to brief the press when the CIA wanted to “circulate disinformation on a particular issue,” noting that this information was not necessarily a lie, and could be a half-truth.

“We would pick out a journalist, I would go do the briefing, and hope that he would put the information in print,” Snepp said, noting that the journalists would usually have no way of actually verifying any of the information provided to them.

Snepp went on to name a few journalists who the CIA had specifically targeted over their “terrific influence,” and named a few “respected journalists” who were working in Saigon at the time, such as Robert Chaplin of the New Yorker, Kies Beach of the Los Angeles Times, Malcolm Brown of the New York Times, and Maynard Parker of Newsweek magazine, among others.

The whistleblower even revealed how the CIA had managed to plant a story in the New Yorker about supposed North Vietnamese war plans. This story was later used by the agency to convince the US Congress to provide more aid to Saigon and paint North Vietnam as the “chief violators of a ceasefire” accord.

Snowden pointed out that, shortly after this interview, Snepp was sued by the CIA in a trial that made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that any publications by intelligence workers must first be submitted to the agency for approval.

The NSA whistleblower separately thanked another Twitter user for starting a “do you think the CIA still does this?” series of posts, detailing the inner workings of the agency as shared by other whistleblowers who had been “sued into silence.”

Protesters block Pakistan’s capital

Supporters of Imran Khan brought traffic to a standstill outside Islamabad, days after the ex-PM was shot

Supporters of former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan blocked roads near Islamabad on Tuesday, disrupting traffic and forcing schools to close. Police documents are thought to have recorded that a lone gunman attempted to kill Khan last week, while Khan claims there was a conspiracy involving two would-be assassins.

Video footage filmed on Monday and Tuesday showed supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party bringing chairs onto highways outside the Pakistani capital, as other groups of demonstrators staged similar sit-down protests inside the city.

Banners featuring Khan’s likeness were held aloft by his supporters and hung from bridges. The protests forced a number of schools to close, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Khan was shot and wounded during a rally outside the town of Gujranwala last Thursday. He had been calling on his supporters to take to the streets since he was ousted from power in April, and at the time was leading a protest march on Islamabad to demand fresh elections. In a video address from his hospital on Friday, he said that he would resume his march on the capital “once I get better.”

Pakistani police have opened a criminal investigation into the shooting, with police documents seen by Reuters alleging that a lone gunman attempted to kill Khan. The former PM alleges that two or more hitmen were involved, however, and has accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and intelligence official Major-General Faisal Nasser of organizing the attempted killing.

Pakistan’s government and military have strongly denied any involvement.

Khan is a former cricketer who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 until his removal from office through a no-confidence motion this April. During his tenure he built economic and diplomatic relations with Russia and China, and claimed that his removal was orchestrated by the US with the goal of installing a more compliant leader.

Fetterman Predicts 'Dramatic' Overnight Comeback, Taps Clinton Lawyer To Fight PA Election Law

Pennsylvania lieutenant governor and Democratic US Senate candidate John Fetterman predicted on Monday that his Republican challenger, Dr. Mehmet Oz, will take an early lead on election day, only for a "dramatic" change to happen overnight as more ballots are counted, according to the Western Journal.

"Counting for ballots cast by mail and early in-person cannot begin until Election Day, thanks to the GOP-controlled legislature — an intentional move to help Republicans baselessly sow doubt about the election results when it suits them,” Fetterman wrote in a memo to “interested parties," reads a memo from Fetterman, according to the Washington Post.

"Pennsylvania is one of only eight states that bans pre-processing of early mail-in ballots, forcing county officials to wait until 7 a.m. on Tuesday to begin opening returned ballots and scanning them into the system," he added.

Fetterman pointed to the 1.4 million mail-in ballots requested, saying they will skew heavily Democratic when counted.

The journalistic consortium Spotlight PA reported that roughly 70 percent of the mail-in ballot requests came from registered Democrats. -Western Journal

"The biggest share of absentee and mail ballot requests came from Allegheny County [which includes Pittsburgh] and Philadelphia — nearly a quarter of the total," Spotlight reports.

"Because Pennsylvania is one of the only states that reports Election Day totals first before ballots cast by mail, and because more populated counties around Philadelphia can take longer to report, we should expect one of the most dramatic shifts in the country from initial GOP support in early results to stronger Democratic gains as more votes are processed," said Fetterman.

Meanwhile, Fetterman has tapped controversial Clinton lawyer Marc Elias' firm to challenge Pennsylvania election provisions.

Ukraine Seizes 5 Major Companies From Billionaire Oligarchs For 'Wartime Needs'

For the first time since the Russian invasion began back in February, the Ukrainian government has invoked wartime laws to dramatically intervene into the private business sector, seizing five "strategically important" companies for state and military use. It comes a year after President Zelensky's so-called "de-oligarchization" reforms and targets companies run by some of Ukraine's wealthiest billionaire businessmen - at least a couple of which are facing major corruption investigations.

Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov announced Monday at a press briefing in Kiev, "As of today, the specified assets are managed on behalf of the state and in the interests of the entire security sector — to meet the needs of the Armed Forces and the entire defense sector."

Specific "urgent" military and national needs which were cited include maintaining fuel supply and adequate equipment repair lines, as well as accessing steady quantities of industrial lubricants. The companies were transferred directly under management of Ukraine's defense ministry. "This is about providing fuel and lubricants, repairing military equipment and weapons," Reznikov said.

The National Securities and Stock Market Commission starting Sunday issued the order to secure shares in aircraft engine manufacturer Motor Sich, oil producer Ukrnafta PJSC, and oil-refining company Ukrtatnafta. These latter two oil industry companies were controlled by Igor Kolomoisky, a controversial previously pro-Zelensky oligarch under investigation for the insolvency of PrivatBank. Also seized were truck maker Avtokraz and parts supplier Zaporizhtransformator.

As for the oligarchs behind MotorSich, AvtoKraz, Zaporizhtransformator, the FT profiles them as follows:

Vyacheslav Boguslaev, MotorSich’s former owner and president, was arrested last month on treason charges. Local prosecutors allege he funnelled through sanctioned export operations helicopter engines that Moscow needed. Boguslaev sold his controlling stake in MotorSich to Chinese company Skyrizon many years ago, but Ukrainian trust and security authorities blocked the move by freezing the shares. Both Kolomoisky and Boguslaev have denied wrongdoing.

AvtoKraz, a truck manufacturer which produces vehicles for domestic military transport as well as rocket systems, was also among the groups taken under state control. It was previously owned by Ukrainian oligarch Kostyantyn Zhevago, who has lived in exile in the past years as Ukrainian authorities pursued cases against him related to the insolvency of a bank he previously owned.

Zaporizhtransformator, an electricity grid parts producer located in Zaporizhzhia, was also seized by the state. Previously owned by businessmen including Kostyantyn Grigorishin, its seizure is designed to secure stable supply of parts needed to repair Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure.

Ukraine government authorities vowed in the Monday statement that "After martial law is lifted, these assets may be returned to their owners or their value may be reimbursed." And further, "These enterprises must operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the needs of the state’s defense."

"In connection with military necessity, a decision was made to expropriate the assets of strategically important enterprises into state ownership," the Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, explained further in a joint presser.

Italian Admiral Backs Naval Blockade To Stop Illegal Migration

An Italian Admiral has expressed his support for forming a naval blockade in the Mediterranean to halt illegal migration as Italy continues to see the largest number of arrivals since 2017.

Rear Admiral Nicola De Felice has released a new book in Italy called Stop the Invasion, in which he advocates for a naval blockade to halt illegal arrivals, a policy also floated by Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni earlier this year.

“Targeted action to tackle the root causes of illegal immigration is absolutely necessary. The solution may be the implementation of the so-called ‘naval blockade’, understood not as a war-style blockade but a naval interdiction intervention, aimed at blocking the departures of boats linked to human trafficking,” the Admiral told the newspaper Il Giornale.

“Had it been implemented from the beginning, the ‘naval blockade’ would have prevented the deaths of thousands and thousands of people, including many children,” De Felice added.

Admiral De Felice went on to note that cooperation with governments in places like North Africa was crucial to halting illegal migration along with helping economic development in the home countries of migrants, to give them an incentive not to make the dangerous journey.

“We can stop the criminal trafficking of these people if we create economic development in their countries and in the countries from which they leave. Deaths at sea are eliminated if departures are avoided and if hotspots on African soil are financed, managed and controlled by European forces, in collaboration with local forces,” he said.

De Felice also noted the plight of many migrants who are trafficked by people smugglers to Europe and forced into drug dealing or prostitution saying, “Women sent to prostitution, men used for drug dealing, while children pay terrible prices: they risk ending up either in the ring of child prostitution, petty crime or in the hell of the organ trade. This is unacceptable.”

So far this year, over 86,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in Italy, with at least 10,000 of them being picked up in the Mediterranean by migrant taxi NGOs and dropped off in Italy.

Italy’s new Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has already made moves to halt the activity of migrant taxi NGOs and resurrected the security decrees enacted by former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, which was one of the policies hailed as decreasing arrivals and migrant deaths in 2018 and 2019.

US Sets Up New Military Base in NE Syria

Base is in key city of Raqqa

A number of US troops and logistics forces have been arriving in the Syrian city of Raqqa recently, and are in the process of establishing a new military base in the area, in Hasakeh Province.

The location makes some sense, though no official announcement has been made yet. The US has an estimated 1,000 troops left in Syria, and 28 declared military sites. They are mostly in Hasakeh, so it makes sense that the new base would be there too.

The timing is particularly telling, however. Just over a week prior, the US said they had “no plans” to withdraw from Syria militarily, and the National Security Council’s John Kirby said the US presence is “solely to combat ISIS.”

There is an ISIS presence around Raqqa, mostly lingering remnant forces in and around the desert area. Those forces often end up fighting Syrian and Russian forces, and sometimes the Kurdish YPG.

The US military intervention in Syria mostly began around 2011 with support for anti-Assad rebels, though late in the Bush Administration the US had launched some attacks. It was President Obama who started the deployment of troops on an official basis in 2015 to fight ISIS but also with a close eye on regime change as a secondary goal.

The US has imposed growing sanctions against the Syrian government, again meant to harm their ability to resist the rebels and to push regime change. This has had little impact, but US officials say there is no plan to remove any of those sanctions. That’s unsurprising, as the US tends to make sanctions a permanent fact of international diplomacy.

Obama’s escalation led to US and YPG forces chasing ISIS out of most of its cities, and into the wilderness areas they presently occupy. President Trump began a pullout from Syria, though he ultimately reversed course and announced the remaining troops would stay to “take the oil.”

The remaining presence is centered on two bases, the base on the Jordanian border at al-Tanf, and a smaller base at one of the Syrian oilfields meant to facilitate a US company taking the oil. Locals say the new Raqqa base has a similar design to the smaller oilfield base.

This ends questions about the US pullout, and now it looks like re escalation is again the order of the day. Though we don’t know how many troops will be stationed in Raqqa, it looks relatively small. The troops are not invited by the Syrian government, and may find themselves at odds with Syrian forces.

This area is also in YPG territory, which normally wouldn’t be a problem since the US and Kurds are on good terms. Turkey has been fighting the Kurds and threatening bigger invasions. This could put the US into a deconfliction issue with the fellow NATO member.

Lacking any vision for what the US end to Syria involvement would look like, it has seemed the US was keeping troops in Syria just for the sake of keeping troops there. That has long risked unintended consequences, and the addition of more US troops and another base only increases that risk.

Voting machines down in entire NJ county, officials say

Voting machines went down in Mercer County, New Jersey on Tuesday morning as voters arrived to cast their ballots in the midterm elections.

Election officials told News12 New Jersey that a software issue caused problems in voting machines countywide. The company that runs the machines are currently working on the issue, officials said.

In the meantime, voters will be required to cast paper ballots that will be hand tabulated, according to News12.

Maricopa County, Arizona also had issues with voting machines on Tuesday morning. A video circulating on Twitter showed a man who appeared to be a county election worker advising dozens of voters waiting in line that their vote tabulation machines are not working.

“We have two tabulators,” the apparent poll worker said in the video. “One of the tabulators is not working, okay. The other tabulator is taking about 75 percent successful, so 25 percent of them are being misread. And it could be a printer issue or it could be the tabulator itself.”

The apparent poll worker then said voters waiting in line have the option to either put their ballots into “what’s called Box 3, and it gets read whether it goes downtown and gets read manually or whether it gets re-fed into our tabulator. They will get read.”

As the poll worker talked, a man in the background could be heard saying, “we don’t want to adjudicate, no.”

The poll worker then said, while laughing, that “no one is trying to deceive anybody.”

“Of course not, not on election day,” a man in the background said. “That would never happen.”

Champaign County Clerk Reports Cyber-Attacks on Servers – Voters Told to Stay in Line

The Champaign County Illinois Clerk’s Office announced the computer server is under cyber-attack.

The cyber-attacks have been ongoing for the last month.

But the clerk’s office says no data will be compromised and the election will be secure.

44 arrested in Poland in a sting targeting online child sexual exploitation

Officers from the Polish the Central Cybercrime Bureau raided 82 locations and seized 15 500 files depicting sexual abuse of children

The Polish Central Cybercrime Bureau (Centralne Biuro Zwalczania Cyberprzestępczości), supported by Europol, targeted child sexual abuse through the setting-up of a special team of police officers in August. The officers, who are experienced in investigating perpetrators involved in the distribution of child sexual abuse material, carried out extensive analytical and operational activities to identify offenders and gather evidence material. The investigations involved other Polish authorities, as well as Europol, the private sector and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

At the end of October, Polish police officers carried out 82 searches across the country and arrested 44 suspects aged between 18 and 66. The preliminary analysis and the searches led to the identification of 15 500 files of both video and photographic material depicting the sexual abuse of children, and to the seizure of 350 large-capacity digital storage units. Some of the images saved on the seized storage items depicted the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers. As some of the files were encrypted, they will be subjected to further examination once decrypted. The leads gathered during the operational actions have fed further investigations that are still in progress.

Among the arrested is an individual suspected of sexual abuse of two children aged four and five, as well as a second individual who has already served a five-and-a-half-year sentence for sexually abusing minors. The operational activities also led to the possible prevention of the victimisation of a child. During the search of a suspect’s house, the officers uncovered correspondence with a 10-year-old boy, which suggests that the adult had obtained the trust of the child for the purpose of his subsequent sexual exploitation. An investigation into a further similar case is now ongoing.

For several years, Europol has served as a destination for NCMEC reports targeting online suspects in various EU Member States, including Poland. Every NCMEC report is stored and cross-checked against Europol data and eventually disseminated to the respective country. Europol supported the Polish operation by providing analytical, victim identification and open-source support, and by facilitating exchanges of information.
