Pennsylvania School Board Director Resigns After Uproar Over Vote Against "Cis White Male" President

 

A Pennsylvania school board member has resigned and apologized after saying at a meeting last week that she was against voting for a β€œcis white male” to be nominated as board president.

 

Jennifer Solot, who has served five years on the school board for the Upper Moreland School District, made the comments at an open board reorganization meeting on Dec. 6 as the board was considering electing two individuals, April Stainback and Greg D’Elia, as the new president.

 

Solot had stated that D’Elia would make an β€œexcellent president” but that she would ultimately not be voting for the candidate, and would instead vote for the incumbent president Stainback.

 

β€œI believe that Mr. D’Elia would make an excellent president,” Solot said at the meeting.

 

β€œHowever, I feel that electing the only cis white male on this board president of this district sends the wrong message to our community: a message that is contrary to what we as a board have been trying to accomplish.”

 

Cis is short for cisgender, a term used to describe someone who identifies as the same sex they were assigned at birth.

 

β€œI think that it is important that we practice what we preach. And that our words have strength when they are spoken, whether we speak them from the neighborhood sidewalks or from behind these tables,” she continued.

 

β€œMrs. Stainback has done an exemplary job as president these last few months, and the strength of her performance has earned her my vote tonight,” Solot added.

 

According to his official website, D’Elia is an β€œengineer, father, and husband,” who had hoped to be elected to the position of School Board president.

Exercise is an Anti-cancer Drug β€” Even for Late-stage Patients

 

It’s no secret that exercise is good for the body, but new findings from a team at Edith Cowan University suggest breaking a sweat regularly is like medicine for cancer patients β€” and every dose counts. Researchers report that just a single exercise session elevated anti-cancer proteins called myokines among a group of late-stage prostate cancer patients. The myokine levels observed post-exercise, study authors say, are enough to significantly suppress tumor growth.

 

Prior studies conducted at ECU’s Exercise Medicine Research Institute have shown that men with advanced prostate cancer are able to change the chemical environment within their own bodies over the course of six months by exercising, consequently suppressing cancer cell growth. Back then, researchers recorded higher levels of myokines, which the skeletal muscles produce and are capable of suppressing tumor growth. They even actively fight cancerous cells by stimulating various anti-cancer processes within the body.

 

Now, this latest EMRI study shows that just a single bout of exercise is enough to elevate myokines even further and induce additional cancer suppression. Importantly, these findings indicate exercise is beneficial for cancer patients, even those with advanced cases who have already received extensive treatment over many years.

 

A total of nine patients with late-stage prostate cancer performed 34 minutes of high intensity exercise on a stationary cycle. Researchers collected blood serum immediately before the workout, immediately afterwards, and then again 30 minutes post-workout.

It was reported in the local newspaper Avisa Oslo that the price of Oslo’s municipal electric car chargers rose dramatically after the city’s budget was approved last week.

β€œThe city council acknowledged last week’s charging problem. They stood up for their own climate goals and met the electric drivers,” he continued.

The Link Between Severe COVID and Exercise Is Even Stronger Than We Thought

 

Doctors have long said that exercising can decrease the risk of severe outcomes of COVID-19, like hospitalization and death, but it's never quite been clear how much exercise is necessary to see those effects. Will one or two workouts a week suffice, or do you need to be working up a sweat every day to lessen your risk of severe COVID? A new study released in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine aimed to find out, looking at how different amounts of exercise affected outcomes of COVID among a large sample size of patients.

 

The research, published Dec. 14, analyzed health records of over 194,000 adult patients at Kaiser Permanente in southern California, all of whom were diagnosed with COVID-19 between Jan. 2020 and May 2021. The patients were asked to evaluate their own level of physical activity prior to infection, and were separated into five subgroups based on their response:

 

Always inactive: 10 minutes of exercise or less per week

 

Mostly inactive: between 10 and 60 minutes of exercise per week

 

Some activity: between 60 and 150 minutes of exercise per week

 

Consistently active: more than 150 minutes of exercise per week

 

Always active: 300 minutes of exercise per week

 

The researchers then examined the data to see how a patient's level of activity prior to infection affected the outcomes of COVID in each group.

 

They found that the more active patients were before infection, the lower the risk of hospitalization or death within 90 days of their COVID diagnosis. The numbers tell the story: in the study, always inactive patients were 191 percent more likely to be hospitalized and 391 percent more likely to die than those who were always active. What's more, the risk of experiencing worse COVID outcomes increased with each step down the activity scale. Somewhat active patients were 143 percent more likely to be hospitalized and 192 percent more likely to die, compared to always active patients; consistently active patients were 125 percent and 155 percent. The findings held true across all major demographic groups, including race, ethnicity, sex, and age, the researchers said.

 

The takeaway? "[E]very little bit of physical activity counts," said the study's lead author, Deborah Rohm Young, PhD, the director of the Division of Behavioral Research for the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation, in a press release. "The more exercise the better, no matter a person's race, ethnicity, age, sex, or chronic conditions."

 

The association between more physical activity and less chance of severe COVID outcomes was so strong, the researchers believe exercise should be emphasized more as one of the most important things we can do to protect ourselves from severe COVID, along with getting vaccinated. (One thing to note: the study was conducted before COVID vaccines were widely available, so it's unclear whether the effects hold true among vaccinated people.)

 

"This is a powerful opportunity to develop stronger policies supporting physical activity as a pandemic-mitigation strategy," Young said. "Our study provides new evidence to inform appropriate interventions across demographic groups."
