Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard historian who along with minister Jesse E. Moorland helped to spearhead a great and necessary discussion on the contributions of Blacks to the American fabric and way of life. What I lament is that that discussion fails to move beyond February unless there is something destructive happening in Black communities or when Democrats and the Left want to christen their chosen symbol of woke Blackness. Promoting a Kamala Harris, while ignoring a Condoleeza Rice. It’s a ridiculous game which diminishes us all.

Something that I also lament is how many of my Black History heroes have been co-opted by the Left. Look at what Democrats and the Left have done to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some of the garbage you read has whole cloth removed his conservative focus or his dependence on God to help him spearhead and lead the Civil Rights movement.

The same with one of my personal heroes, Ida B. Wells-Barnett. For years Wells never received the prominence she deserves. Now that she is, it’s focus is cloaked in the language of the Left. Her great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster (pictured), recently released her novel: Ida B. The Queen, which dovetails Ida B. Wells’s story into what is happening in modern-day America.

I have not yet read the book, but I have no doubt it will lean toward social justice and Woke politics. Sadly, this is the hallmark of our time, and that is what is selling like hotcakes. This is the nature of what is happening with many of the giants of Black History—co-option by the Left. Rather than Wells’s powerful life being the center, her story is the latest prop for activism and feminism.

Once again, I give credit to The Guardian for recognizing this unsung hero of Black History, and doing as well as they could not to insert their Leftist ideology into the telling. In their spotlight of Ida B. Wells and her legacy, tragically the only person they seemed to find to interview is the history revisionist and investigative journalist (so-called), Nikole Hannah-Jones. You remember her, don’t you? One of the authors of the much-debunked “1619 Project.” Hannah-Jones has also co-opted Wells’ name and legacy (her Twitter handle is “Ida Bae Wells”). She has even created a foundation in Ida B. Wells’ name which is nothing but an indoctrination center for the Left’s pet social justice issues. Once again, this shows how Leftist narratives that have nothing to do with Wells’ actual life and legacy are being seeded into the public imagination.

“I consider her my spiritual grandmother,” says Nikole Hannah-Jones, an investigative journalist covering civil rights. “She was a trailblazer in every way … as a feminist, as a suffragist, as an investigative reporter, as a civil rights leader. She was just an all-around badass.”

Yes, Ida B. Wells was a trailblazer and a badass on all counts. Nikole Hannah-Jones is definitely not. She’s a fraud as many of us have pointed out in these pages, and as I spotlighted here. If Ida B. Wells were still alive (that would be a feat, she would be 160 years old!) I believe she would have zero acknowledgment for that one. In fact, Wells would be lumped among the Black conservatives that Hannah-Jones claims to despise. There is an incredible intellect, a beauty, and a fierceness in Ida B. Wells that is neither manufactured nor affected. Wells was the real deal, and her unvarnished legacy is an example that all children should aspire to.

Personally, I am determined to not allow a dishonest mouthpiece like Nikole Hannah-Jones to co-opt Ida B. Wells’ legacy and translate it for her progressive and elitist crowd. Here’s why conservatives need to embrace and celebrate the life of Ida B. Wells during Black History Month — and the other 11 months of the year.

Ida B. Wells was born into Slavery, but she didn’t remain one.

Wells was born July 16, 1862, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Five months later, on January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing her parents, Elizabeth and James Wells from slavery. The Wells’ former master was a skilled carpenter who taught James Wells the trade. It is reported that Elizabeth was also a premiere cook. Because of their own education and advanced trade skills, they were able to support their growing family in the antebellum age, where many freed Blacks struggled.

According to a Washington Post profile on Wells,

Her mother, Elizabeth Wells, who had been sold from a plantation in Virginia to one farther south, taught her about maintaining dignity in the face of dehumanizing racial oppression. Her father, James Wells, was the son of a carpenter who was a slave owner. He was often described as a “race man,” advocating for the rights of newly freed black people and working with the Republican Party during Reconstruction.

Wells was the eldest of James and Elizabeth’s eight children. Her parents instilled in her and her siblings that education was the key to upward mobility, so Wells excelled in that, going on to attend Rust College, a historically Black college in Holly Springs.

Ida B. Wells raised her brothers and sisters at the age of 16.

In 1878, Wells’ parents and one of her siblings were the victims of a yellow fever epidemic and died soon after. The family did not go on welfare or assistance (whatever that may have been at that time). Wells instead found work as a teacher to support her remaining siblings and with the help of her grandmother, continued to raise and care for them. The family ultimately moved to Memphis, Tennessee when Wells acquired another teaching job in Woodstock, which was just a train ride away. During the summers, Wells continued her own education at Fisk University.

Ida B. Wells was an activist for real life and death issues, unlike the manufactured ones of our day.

Here is where Wells’ first major clash with actual systemic racism occurred. It was 1884, and Wells was 21. She had purchased a first-class train ticket on Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Company to get from Memphis to Woodstock for her teaching job. Wells was told to give up her seat for a white passenger, and to move to the Jim Crow car (which was also the smoking car—go figure). Wells refused.

Despite the 1875 Civil Rights Act banning discrimination on the basis of race, creed, or color, in theaters, hotels, transports, and other public accommodations, several railroad companies defied this congressional mandate and racially segregated its passengers. It is important to realize that her defiant act was before Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), the U.S. Supreme Court decision that established the fallacious doctrine of “separate but equal,” which constitutionalized racial segregation. Wells wrote in her autobiography:

I refused, saying that the forward car [closest to the locomotive] was a smoker, and as I was in the ladies’ car, I proposed to stay. . . [The conductor] tried to drag me out of the seat, but the moment he caught hold of my arm I fastened my teeth in the back of his hand. I had braced my feet against the seat in front and was holding to the back, and as he had already been badly bitten he didn’t try it again by himself. He went forward and got the baggageman and another man to help him and of course they succeeded in dragging me out.

Wells was unceremoniously thrown off the train. As any smart, well-educated person would do, Wells chose lawfare. She sued the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Company and won the case. One headline read, “Darky damsel gets damages.” Sounds just like the legacy media. The decision was later reversed, but the fact that as a Black female Wells chose to fight, rather than lie down, is historic and unprecedented.

Wells made her investigative bones with her research, writing, and documentation of lynching in the South between 1864 and 1894. Called The Red Record: Tabulated Statistics and Alleged Causes of Lynching in the United States, Wells compiled newspaper clippings, court cases, and eyewitness accounts of a pattern of race-targeted lynchings in the United States. Mind you, this is the late 1800s. There was no internet. There was no air travel. There were no telephones in every location and household. Wells did all this with her determination, grit, and fire in the belly that the evils of targeting Blacks for lynching needed to be exposed and destroyed. She wanted secured freedoms, protections, truth, and justice for her people. Wells was not interested in indoctrination or embedding a narrative that suited one agenda at the expense of all else.

Ida B. Wells was an entrepreneur at 25. She believed in women making their own way in the world.

Wells became the co-owner and editor of the local Memphis Black newspaper: Free Speech and Headlight. The People’s Grocery Lynching is what activated her. Her friends Thomas Moss, Calvin McDowell, and Henry Stewart owned the successful grocery business, and had taken away customers from the competing white stores. The white business owners resented this, so they manufactured a race issue and went to attack the People’s Grocery owners. Moss, McDowell, and Stewart were gun owners and rightly defended themselves. Instead, the store owners were arrested, then a lynch mob broke into the jail, dragged them outside of town, and lynched Moss, McDonald, and Stewart. The People’s Grocery was burned to the ground.

Wells used her paper to speak out against this atrocity:

The city of Memphis has demonstrated that neither character nor standing avails the Negro if he dares to protect himself against the white man or become his rival. There is nothing we can do about the lynching now, as we are out-numbered and without arms. The white mob could help itself to ammunition without pay, but the order is rigidly enforced against the selling of guns to Negroes. There is therefore only one thing left to do; save our money and leave a town which will neither protect our lives and property, nor give us a fair trial in the courts, but takes us out and murders us in cold blood when accused by white persons.

After this, Wells spent months traveling alone in the South, armed with her Winchester Rifle, and did her research for The Red Record. While Wells was traveling, the Klan burned her business, destroyed her printing presses, and threatened to lynch her. Wells moved to New York, then Chicago, but continued her activist and advocacy work. Wells ultimately made Chicago her home (another personal connection for me) and fought for women’s suffrage and desegregation of schools.

Ida B. Wells was a destroyer of narratives and would not hesitate to decimate our modern-day ones.

Ida B. Wells lived everything that second and third-wave feminists claim to crow about, but she did it while still embracing being a woman, marriage, and motherhood.

1.­ She Believed in Marriage and Family.

In 1895, Wells married fellow writer and editor F.L. Barnett, who was also an attorney. No doubt, he was a handy person to have on hand for her investigative work. She wrote in her autobiography:

“I was married in the city of Chicago to Attorney F. L. Barnett, and retired to what I thought was the privacy of a home.”

Of course, we know this did not happen. Wells managed to pack in all her writing, activism, and public speaking in between having four beautiful children.

2. She was too radical for the NAACP, the organization she helped to found.

In 1906, Wells joined with W.E.B. DuBois and others to further the Niagara Movement, and she was one of two Black females to sign “the call” to form the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Wells saw this come about in 1909 when the NAACP was officially formed. However, Wells spoke out against Booker T. Washington and his strategy of using trade skills to improve the fate of the Negro and encourage integration. This view was too radical for the NAACP and they pretty much kicked her out of the organization. They kicked her out. Can you believe that? That alone is why I am sure Wells would not align with the narratives painted by the selected Black organizations of today nor would she be lockstep with the Black Democrat voting bloc.

3. She was a supporter of 2A and gun rights—especially for Blacks.

Wells recognized that these supposed “Black Codes” (the gun control laws in the Jim Crow South) were to restrict Blacks from owning firearms and protecting themselves from the Ku Klux Klan. Sadly, not much has changed today. All the gun restrictions attack the protection and purchasing power of minorities and people of low income. One Supreme Court case that helped to codify our right to bear arms was brought by a Black man. Otis McDonald in McDonald v. the City of Chicago. Wells would have not only been at the forefront of this case, but she would have cheered the decision.

Wells said,

“A Winchester rifle should have a place of honor in every black home, and it should be used for that protection which the law refuses to give.”

4. Like many of us, Wells was disappointed in the Republican Party, but she would never be a Democrat and remained fiercely conservative throughout her life.

In 1930, Wells had had enough of the major parties. So she decided to become a part of the solution and ran as an independent for the Illinois State legislature. Wells became the first Black woman to run for public office in the United States. I never hear this mentioned by anyone who claims they care about Blacks in politics.

Wells did not win that race, but she continued to support conservatives and conservative-leaning candidates throughout her life. And she firmly stated that she would never become a Democrat.

“I am not a Democrat,” Wells wrote, “because the Democrats considered me a chattel and possibly might have always so considered me, because their record from the beginning has been inimical to my interests. I am not a Republican, because, after they — as a party measure and an inevitable result of the war — had ‘given the Negro his freedom’ and the ballot box following, all through their reign — while advocating the doctrine of the Federal Government’s right to protecting her citizens — they suffered the crimes against the Negro, that have made the South notorious, to go unpunished and almost unnoticed and turned them over to the tender mercies of the South.”

She goes on to say “it is not in favor, nor against the interest of either party that I write this. Let a man be Democrat, Republican or Independent as his judgment dictates, if he is obeying honest and intelligent convictions.”

ODESSA, the Organization of Former SS Members (Organization Der Ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen), was founded in 1944 to help Nazis flee Europe and escape justice.

 

As early as 1947, Simon Wiesenthal began to identify routes used by Nazis to escape from Germany knowing that the fugitives had little or no difficulty obtaining false papers and seemed to have enough money available to establish new lives. Wiesenthal concluded that a secret organization with substantial resources had to be involved in helping these fugitive Nazis.

 

As it turned out, this organization not only existed then but its seeds had been planted even before World War II ended.

 

By 1944, it was clear that the fortunes of war had turned against Nazi Germany. Many Germans began to anticipate defeat and to plan for that eventuality. On August 10, 1944,a secret meeting of top German industrialists and bankers was held at the Maison Rouge hotel in Strasbourg to devise a means of insuring a secure future for the Nazis. Among those attending were coal tycoon Emil Kirdorf, Georg von Schnitzler of IG Farben, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, steel magnate, Fritz Thyssen, and banker Kurt von Schroeder.

 

The Nazis recognized that Germany's assets would fall into the hands of the rapidly approaching enemy if they were not transferred and hidden. The nation's wealth, much of it acquired through the plunder of the nations it invaded and the people the Nazis murdered, had to be transferred so they would be out of judicial reach, but accessible to fund a future movement to resurrect the party and build a new Reich. Leading Nazi officials also feared retribution from the Allies and, rather than face likely punishment for their war crimes, they decided to seek safe havens outside Germany, and beyond the reach of justice. According to the protocol from the meeting:

 

The party leadership is aware that, following the defeat of Germany, some of her best-known leaders may have to face trial as war criminals. Steps have therefore been taken to lodge the less prominent party leaders as "technical experts" in various German enterprises. The party is prepared to lend large sums of money to industrialists to enable every one of them to set up a secret post-war organization abroad, but as collateral it demands that the industrialists make available to it exisitng resources abroad,so that a strong German Reich may re-emerge after the defeat…..

 

The outcome of the meeting in Strasbourg was the genesis of an organization; one well-financed and well-organised, with the express purpose of helping fleeing Nazis escape justice.This organization was called the Organization Der Ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen(The Organization of former SS members) — better known asODESSA.

 

Wiesenthal learned of ODESSA accidentally during conversations with a former member of German counter-espionage who he met during the Nuremberg trials.The source said the organization was set up in 1946 after many Nazis already had been imprisoned. In short order, ODESSA, built a large and reliable network geared to achieve its ends, and began operations. Routes were mapped and contacts were established. Influential Nazis vanished as they were secretly ushered out of Germany and assisted in starting new lives under false names in foreign countries. According to Wiesenthal, one Franciscan monastery, Via Sicilia in Rome, was virtually a transit station for Nazis, an arrangement made possible by a bishop from Graz named Alois Hudal. Wiesenthal speculates that the motive for most of the priests was what he viewed as a misguided notion of Christian charity. Once in Italy, the fugitives were out of danger, and many then dispersed around the globe.

 

Some countries may not have known about their new immigrants' pasts, but many did and chose to look the other way. Others, including the United States, looked to exploit the knowledge of Nazis. Fascist countries, such as Spain under Franco, as well as those in South America, became safe havens. The establishment of the state of Israel after World War II led some Arab nations to welcome Nazis who shared their hatred of the Jews in the hope they would use their expertise in areas such as rocketry to tilt the balance in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

 

Adolf Eichmann was one of the most notorious of the Nazis to escape Germany thanks to ODESSA, but he was eventually captured in South America by Israeli Intelligence agents and brought back to Israel to stand trial for his crimes against the Jewish people.

Washington – A Tacoma woman with tuberculosis will be arrested on Friday for treatment unless she voluntarily complies with a court order to resume taking medication or isolate.

 

According to KOMO News, the woman has been avoiding treatment or isolation for TB for a year.

 

The woman, who was under an involuntary order to take medication for TB, didn’t finish her treatment.

Ford seeks patent for cars that ditch you if payments missed

 

Timely application as delinquencies rise with interest rates

 

A patent application from automaker Ford was published last week for embedded vehicle systems that facilitate an automobile's repossession, including autonomously moving it to a repossession agency.

 

The patent [PDF], which was filed in August, covers more ways to combat non-payment. The least intrusive is a helpful message delivered to the vehicle or a smartphone notifying the user of the delinquency.

 

If notices go unacknowledged, the system can disable select functionalities of the vehicle or even lock the vehicle out entirely – save for a medical emergency where it could potentially travel to a hospital or ambulance meeting spot autonomously.

 

For autonomous cars and trucks, why stop at rendezvousing with emergency vehicles? The patent also outlines the system's capability to move that vehicle to a parking spot more convenient for towing, as well as just relocating it off private property or other inaccessible areas. As mentioned, it could also move itself to a repossession agency or junkyard.

 

The patent also outlines a potential to lock the vehicle out on weekends only so that the driver can still access a job and might be able to come through on those delinquent payments. Geofencing the automobile's range is another option.

 

In a more passive aggressive case, audio within the vehicle, such as a beeping horn, chime or radio, could be activated remotely to annoy the operator.

 

The options are endless, and the patent application explores many. The authors argue that once warnings have been issued with no response, owners typically become uncooperative and may impede repossession, in some cases to the point of confrontation.

 

"It is therefore desirable to provide a solution to address this issue," wrote the four Ford engineers.

 

There's no telling if Ford intends to incorporate the software-only tech in any of its vehicles any time soon, either factory installed or as an over-the-air update. The Register has asked and will report back if any substantial information arises.

 

Car repossessions are on the rise in the United States as higher interest rates affect monthly payments.

 

"Over the last two years, vehicle prices were inflated because there was no new car supply, people were still buying like crazy because they had a lot of stay-at-home cash, they had inflated credit scores, so it was like a recipe for disaster," president of International Recovery Systems Jeremy Cross told NBC News in mid-December.

 

Those who bought at inflated prices with inflated credit scores are now getting hit by that inflation, thus creating a system ripe for delinquencies.

 

A spokesperson at Ford told us: "We submit patents on new inventions as a normal course of business but they aren't necessarily an indication of new business or product plans."

Charles Harrelson was born in Huntsville, Texas, in 1939. After leaving school Harrelson moved to California where he eventually became an encyclopedia salesman. He later turned to crime and in 1960 was convicted of armed robbery. He was also believed to be a contract killer.

 

Jack Anderson, is one of those reporters who believe Harrelson was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. In their book he Man on the Grassy Knoll, John R. Craig and Philip A. Rogers claimed that Harrelson and Charles Rogers were the two gunman behind the picket fence on the Grassy Knoll.

 

It was also claimed that Harrelson, Rogers and Chauncey Holt were the three tramps arrested in Dealey Plaza on 22nd November, 1963. It was not until 1992 that the Dallas Police Department revealed that the three tramps were Gus Abrams, John F. Gedney and Harold Doyle.

 

In 1968 Harrelson, the father of the actor, Woody Harrelson, was convicted of the murder of businessman, Sam Degelia, in a contract killing in South Texas.He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but with time off for good behavior, he was free in five years.

 

It is believed that in 1979 Harrelson was paid $250,000 by drug dealers to assassinate John H. Wood. On 29th May, 1979, Wood was shot dead as he left his Alamo Heights townhouse. Wood, known as "Maximum John" for his tough sentences of drug traffickers, was the first federal judge to be murdered in the 20th century.

 

When he was arrested he confessed to being one of the gunman who killed President John F. Kennedy. He later withdrew this confession but he was eventually convicted of the murder of Wood and sentenced to two life sentences.

 

In 1988 Harrelson told the producer of The Men Who Killed Kennedy, Nigel Turner, that "on November 22, 1963, at 12.30, I was having lunch with a friend in a restaurant in Houston, Texas." He also told Turner that he would not have accepted such a contract as he knew that if he had, he would have ended up, like Lee Harvey Oswald, being killed by the Mafia.

 

In October, 1991, Chauncey Holt confessed to John Craig, Phillip Rogers and Gary Shaw about his role in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Holt's story was undermined in 1992 when the Dallas Police Department revealed that the three tramps were Gus Abrams, John F. Gedney and Harold Doyle. Ray and Mary LaFontaine carried out their own research into this claim. They traced Doyle and Gedley who confirmed they were two of the tramps in the photograph. Gus Abrams was dead but his sister identified him as the third tramp in the photograph.

 

In 1995 Harrelson attempted to break out of Atlanta Federal Prison. He was recaptured and moved to Florence Administrative Maximum Penitentiary in Colorado. Woody Harrelson attempted to have his father's conviction overturned and secure a new trial.

 

Charles Harrelson died of a heart attack on 15th March, 2007.

So I scooted under the train, went under to the other side, encountered Harrelson and Montoya, we searched out the car, which was not too far from the engine, climbed in it, closed the door and sat there in silence, while I monitored the radio and listened to what was going on.

 

We were in the railroad car by 12:31-12:32, almost immediately… as soon as the shooting started, and there was pandemonium and people were running all over the place. When actually, we look back on it, we could of easily of lost ourselves in all of this stuff. We could have gotten right up to the grassy knoll and thrown ourselves on the ground, like everybody else was, and started screaming, and that would have been the end of it.

 

We were in the box car a long time. Actually we heard a lot of transmissions. I estimated that it was almost 2 o'clock, although my watch was still on Arizona time. I had a bad habit of not changing my watch. So I think we stayed in there till practically 2 o'clock. We were still in there during the time when we heard the transmissions involving Tippit and back and forth. We heard a lot of other communications. We heard the call than an officer had been dying. I am told and I believe it was somewhere around 1:15 when we heard about the incident at the Texas theater, although we didn't know what happened.

 

So I thought it was possibly 2 o'clock before the train actually started to move. We started to move, backing down the tracks a little ways. We thought it was going to move, then we starts to backup. I thought they were going to switch us onto another track.

 

Then suddenly the thing stopped. They opened the door and there was a whole bunch of police officers with shotguns and everything else. We saw, the box car was not a fully loaded box car, but in this box car was ammunition, unusual ammunition. Defcord?, crates that looked like they were possibly claymore mines, drums marked : MUD, which seemed like drilling mud, which was unusual to be with the rest of this material. Which I assumed to be C-4 or some plastic explosives.

 

The officer too us out, we tried to identify ourselves. We said, "Hey, we're federal agents working on this thing," and they said, "Come with us." So we strolled along and actually we went back, we came out of the yard, we went by the Texas Depository building, across the street. I would say Harrelson and I were sort of dragging along, but Montoya, he was really digging out. He was actually right up behind the lead officer. He turned us over to two officers, the officer in charge, we later learned was Harkness.

 

In the photos, the individual in front is the individual I knew as Richard Montoya (Charles Rogers). The individual behind him I knew as Charles Harrelson. I had reason to believe that who he actually was, even though I didn't know him that well. I 'm confident that's who it was. And I'm the gentleman in the back, carrying the bag with the radio in it.

 

We were not placed under arrest. We were taken across, and someone interviewed us momentarily, and turned us over to someone else. A person I later learned was Captain Fritz, he said not two or three words to us. He said he was turning us over to the FBI. His name was Gordon Shanklin.

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot ousted; Vallas, Johnson in runoff

CHICAGO (AP) — Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson will meet in a runoff to be the next mayor of Chicago after voters on Tuesday denied incumbent Lori Lightfoot a second term, issuing a rebuke to a leader who made history as head of the nation’s third-largest city.

 

Vallas, a former schools CEO backed by the police union, and Johnson, a Cook County commissioner endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union, advanced to the April 4 runoff after none of the nine candidates was able to secure over 50% of the vote to win outright.

 

Lightfoot, the first Black woman and first openly gay person to lead the city, won her first term in 2019 after promising to end decades of corruption and backroom dealing at City Hall. But opponents blamed Lightfoot for an increase in crime and criticized her as being a divisive, overly contentious leader.

 

She is the first elected Chicago mayor to lose a reelection bid since 1983, when Jane Byrne, the city’s first female mayor, lost her Democratic primary.

 

Speaking to supporters Tuesday night, Lightfoot said she called Vallas and Johnson to congratulate them.

 

“Regardless of tonight’s outcome, we fought the right fights and we put this city on a better path,” Lightfoot said. She told her fellow mayors around the country not to fear being bold.

He asked us who were were, what we were doing there. Just about this time, while were were doing this, there was a lot of confusion, a lot of pandemonium, and actually a lot of, I would term jubilation on the part of all of the police officers in there, especially Gordon Shanklin, which led us to believe that our release was because of something that happened. Although they had said it on a number of occasions, someone else was arrested. They had caught someone in the Dal Tex building. I heard someone say, "We got one of them." But then when the matter came in that they had indicated they had got the individual that had killed the cop in Oakcliff, all at once it seemed to me, even what I considered prematurely, they indicated they had the guy that shot the president too. And at that time the level of attention on us… they had some other people they had detained and looked like they were going to arrest, including Braden.

 

Jim Braden was there. I didn't recognize him at first, because he had a hat on with some kind of Texas style hat band on it, and I didn't know him all that well, if you know what I mean. But I knew that I recognized him like I recognize you.

 

But once we got in there, and these events come off because they happened almost at the time we arrived there. Then the attention shifted a lot at once, from us to Oswald, who turned out to be Oswald. I assumed that it was their normal enthusiasm about having captured a cop killer, is what I thought. Because they treat cop killers a hell of a lot different than they treat killers of anyone else. Not the president of course. But at that point, Gorden Shanklin… we hadn't been in there too long. We were there a little while. And all this time… then who we are came up, then they were very careless. We were strolling around, people were coming around. They didn't treat us like dangerous suspects. They didn't handcuff us. Plus they didn't search us, and we were heavily armed.

 

We were taken to the Sheriff's Department, right there on Dealey Plaza. Didn't walk far. We didn't make a statement. Weren't fingerprinted. Weren't taken to the jail (where) I assume we would have been taken. Then Gordon Shanklin said, "You're free to go."

The next big break in the case came when the Dallas City Council voted to release all city records having to do with the assassination. Journalist Mary La Fontaine, who was looking through the recently released records, happened to look at a list of records released earlier in 1989. There she found the arrest records that showed the tramps to be: Harold Doyle, John Forester Gedney, Gus W. Abrams

 

Were these fellows in fact the three tramps? Ray and Mary LaFontaine, working for the tabloid TV program "A Current Affair," set out to find Harold Doyle, whose address was listed on the arrest record as Red Jacket, West Virginia. The trail led from West Virginia to Amarillo, Texas, where the LaFontaines found one of Doyle's former neighbors who remembered him talking about his arrest in Dallas. Doyle was finally located in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He told his story on camera, and was also questioned by the FBI.

 

The FBI and private researchers sought the other two tramps. Gedney was located in Melbourne, Florida, serving as a municipal officer, a respected member of the community who had not spoken about former life as a vagabond until interviewed by researcher Billy Cox, and by the FBI. Both Doyle and Gedney told the same story of spending the night before the assassination at a rescue mission. According to Oliver Revell of the Dallas FBI office:

 

Both commented that they had gotten fresh clothes, showered, shaved and had a meal. They headed back to the railroad yard when they heard all the commotion and sirens and everything, and they asked what happened. They were told the president had been shot.

 

Abrams, the oldest of the tramps, was deceased. But researcher Kenneth Formet interviewed his sister, with whom he had lived the last 15 years of his life. She remembered his vagabond days, saying "he was always on the go hopping trains and drinking wine." When shown a picture of the Dealey Plaza tramps she responded "Yep, that's my Bill!"

Charles Voyde Harrelson - the killer-for-hire who prompted the biggest FBI investigation ever to probe El Paso by assassinating a federal judge - died last week at a federal prison in Colorado, the San Antonio Express-News reported this morning.

 

Harrelson, 69, who was the father of actor Woody Harrelson, apparently died of a heart attack in his sleep on March 14 in a maximum security facility, according to the Express-News story.

 

Charles Harrelson had been serving a life sentence for killing U.S. District Judge John H. Wood in San Antonio in 1979, who was to preside over the trial of Jamiel "Jimmy" Chagra.

 

The Chagras were a prominent family in El Paso. According to prosecutors, some members of the family were also involved in drug smuggling.

 

By killing Wood, Charles Harrelson triggered what FBI spokesman Art Werge later called "the largest manhunt ever to focus on El Paso."

 

Wood was the first federal judge assassinated in the 20th century and Werge said it was the FBI's largest manhunt prior to the 1995 Oklahoma City

THE bloody family secrets of Woody Harrelson, the Hollywood actor, are to be revealed in a prison memoir written by his father, a professional hitman.

 

Charles “Chuck” Harrelson, who died in a Colorado maximum security jail last month, left a bundle of papers to his three sons with a plea to clear him of murdering a judge. But he admits in the memoir that he was involved in dozens of killings stretching back to the early 1960s.

 

Woody Harrelson, who played a psychopath in Oliver Stone’s 1994 film Natural Born Killers, has not yet decided what to do with the papers, although he has already challenged the final conviction that landed his father in a “supermax” high-security prison.

 

His father, who wanted his life story to be published, first went to prison when Woody was seven and was jailed for life when his son was at college, but said he always hoped that one day they would have a “straight, no bull” talk about his past.

 

Chuck Harrelson’s death at 69 following heart trouble meant that conversation never took place. However, the papers are expected to answer questions posed both by his family and by the relatives of his many supposed victims.

Prosecutors said Harrelson, a violent thief and killer for hire in his twenties, was unusual because he used a sniper rifle rather than a handgun. “Charles Harrelson damaged everyone he came in contact with,” said the prosecutor at his last trial.

 

Harrelson even boasted — probably to impress potential employers — that he had shot President John F Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. He claimed to have been one of three men dressed as tramps on the grassy knoll close to the Kennedy cavalcade and said that Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed assassin, was too far away from the president to get a clear shot.

 

If the grassy knoll story was a self-promoting fabrication, it seems to have worked. In 1979 he was allegedly paid $250,000 to shoot a Texas judge preparing to sentence a drug dealer. The plot backfired. The judge died but the dealer was arrested and claimed to have hired Harrelson, who received two life sentences.

 

In 2003 the dealer recanted, saying someone else had shot the judge. Woody Harrelson stepped up pressure for a retrial, but his father died before lawyers could get him out of jail. “My father was no saint, but a lot of sources led me to believe it was not a fair trial,” he said recently.

 

Woody Harrelson, 45, who rose to fame as the slow, sweet-natured barman Woody Boyd in the TV comedy Cheers, has generated more recent headlines with political stunts. He scaled the Golden Gate bridge to unveil an antilogging banner and, as a vegan, has protested against factory farming.

 

He will appear next in a film called Battle in Seattle, set amid violent protests against the World Trade Organisation summit in 1999. “It’s to make up for not being there myself,” he joked.

 

Harrelson has had his own misadventures. He once admitted to “sex addiction” and in the early 1980s was fined after dancing in traffic and jumping out of a moving police van. He remains unsure how his life was influenced by his father’s criminal career.

 

“I suspect it’s a mixed influence — it made me think outlaw, but I would not want to hurt anyone,” he said.

 

Chuck Harrelson revealed his literary ambitions to Kenny Gallo, a convicted mafia “associate” in the FBI witness protection programme. “He wrote to me saying he was writing the book that exposed all the lies written about him over the years,” Gallo said.

 

He denied that Harrelson had killed 50 people: “He may have been involved in that many killings, maybe driving the car or something, but he only carried out maybe six killings himself.”

 

America no longer produced assassins like Harrelson, he added. “Today, you want someone killed, you call in a Russian or an Israeli. I don’t know how Woody feels about his father, but Harrelson was probably the last of a killing breed.”

Mayor Lori Lightfoot conceded defeat Tuesday night, ending her efforts for a second term and setting the stage for Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson to run against former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas for Chicago mayor.

 

A visibly shaken Lightfoot conceded the race just before 9 p.m. and said she will be “rooting and praying for our next mayor to deliver for the people of the city for years to come.”

 

“Obviously, we didn’t win the election today, but I stand here with my head held high and a heart full of gratitude,” Lightfoot said, highlighting how the city emerged from a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and made “real progress on public safety.”

 

The Associated Press just before 9 p.m. called the race for Johnson, who in addition to defeating Lightfoot also outmuscled U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García.

 

Johnson’s victory sets up an ideological battle with Vallas over the future path of the nation’s third-largest city. The two will face off in five weeks on April 4.

 

Vallas also spoke before 9 p.m. surrounded by a gleeful campaign staff as he announced that Lightfoot called to congratulate him on securing a spot in the run-off.

 

“I want to thank the voters of Chicago for making this campaign about the issues, and nothing but the issues,” Vallas said, a pointed rebuke of attacks from rivals attempting to paint him as a Republican.

 

Others running included businessman Willie Wilson, state Rep. Kambium “Kam” Buckner, Ald. Sophia King, 4th, Ald. Roderick Sawyer, 6th, and community activist Ja’Mal Green.

 

Wilson’s position in the race was critical to the result. The businessman campaigned vigorously with Lightfoot in 2019 but their relationship fell apart before she even took office, spurring his run and potentially siphoning votes from the reelection seeking mayor.

 

Vallas scored the top spot in the first round of the mayoral campaign.

 

Unofficial results showed Vallas garnered 35% of the vote with 90% of the precincts reporting. Johnson was second with 20%, followed by Lightfoot at 16% and García at 14%. They were trailed by Wilson with 9%. The remaining candidates were each receiving 2% or less of the vote.

 

With nine candidates running, including seven Black candidates, few expected Tuesday’s election would be the final say on the 2023 race for mayor.

 

The final matchup was a stunning blow to Lightfoot, who became the first full-term incumbent to fail to win reelection since Jane Byrne lost to Harold Washington in 1983. It was also a clear indication that after an arduous four years, residents were clamoring for a new direction from City Hall. But what direction that is remains to be seen.

 

The more conservative Vallas and progressive Johnson sparred throughout the divisive campaign, which saw the two typically on opposite ends of the biggest issues in the race — education and crime.
