A few dozen trade unionists invaded the U.S. based investment firm‘s offices, raising their voices against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension changes. The French government plans to increase the retirement age from 62 to 64. The rioters were chanting slogans and lighting fireworks inside the premises.

The infiltration of the $10-trillion asset manager took place on the 11th day of nationwide union-organized protests. Furthermore, protestors were chanting the movement’s slogan, “On est la,” which translates to “We are here.”

 

In other European countries, private pension funds partially finance pension plans. In France, on the other hand, people who are still working, fund the pensions of those in retirement. However, according to the government, the pension system needs to be reformed to remain functional. The Constitutional Council is anticipated to make a decision sometime this month. However, the opposition is expecting that it will severely restrict his idea.

 

During a week-long sanitation workers’ strike, mountains of trash weighing up to 10,000 tons piled up on the streets of Paris. The employees oppose raising the retirement age from 57 to 59. Because their work is physically more demanding, sanitation workers have a lower retirement age.

 

Why was BlackRock’s Paris office targeted?

According to Françoise Onic, BlackRock was a focus of the protesters due to its involvement with private pension funds. Moreover, Onic stated that “only the rich will be able to benefit from such a setup,” referring to the new pension plans.

 

BlackRock is the largest investment manager in the world. The firm handles nearly $10 trillion worth of assets, which is more than the GDP of many countries.

 

Moreover, this is not the first time protestors have invaded BlackRock’s offices in Paris. In January 2020, climate activists infiltrated the premises to force the firm to pull out of fossil fuel investments.

Chinese Refiners Buy More Iranian Oil As Competition For Russian Crude Heats Up

 

Many private Chinese refiners in the Shandong province are buying increasing volumes of Iranian crude as competition for Russian oil from China's major state-held refiners and from Indian buyers has made Moscow's barrels relatively more expensive.

 

China's private refiners, the so-called teapots, are estimated to have imported 800,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Iranian crude oil and condensate in March, up by 20% compared to February, Emma Li, an analyst with Vortexa, told Bloomberg.

 

Imports from Iran into the Shandong province—home to most of the private refiners in China—could continue to be robust in the coming months, according to the analyst.

 

There isn't official data on Iranian imports into China, so the market relies on tanker-tracking companies that aim to capture the true picture of how much of Iran's oil, sanctioned by the U.S. and going to very few destinations these days, is being shipped to China. The private refiners in the world's top oil importer are now betting more on cheap Iranian crude, as Russian supply is going to the state-owned Chinese majors and to India's refiners. Russia's crude is also cheaper compared to international benchmarks, but heightened competition has driven up prices in recent weeks.

 

Russia was the single largest crude oil supplier to China in January and February, overtaking Saudi Arabia, which was the number-one supplier of oil to China last year, according to Chinese customs data from last month. As China accelerated the buying of cheap Russian crude oil at discounts to international benchmarks, Chinese imports of crude from Russia jumped by 23.8% year over year to 1.94 million barrels per day (bpd) in January and February 2023.

China disavows NYT claim about Russia relations

The New York Times failed to accurately reflect China’s position on relations with Moscow in its account of an interview with Beijing’s ambassador to the EU, the diplomat’s office has said.

 

In an article published on Wednesday, the NYT stated that Fu Cong tried to distance China from Russia, and downplayed the ties between the two powers.

 

A reporter asked about a key joint statement signed last year by Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which declared the friendship between the nations as having “no limits.” The ambassador, according to the newspaper, replied that there can beno such thingas a friendship with “no limit” and that the description was “nothing but rhetoric.”

 

The Chinese mission to the EU told the Russian news agency TASS that the interview with the NYT was about an hour long and that the highlights printed by the paper failed to properly convey Fu’s words.

Mexican police seize over 20 exotic animals during ranch raid

Over 20 exotic animals — including a Bengal tiger, pumas and lions — were reportedly seized from a ranch near Mexico City.

 

A total of 47 live animals were at the property in Huixquilucan, some kept in cages — but authorities also seized seven dead animals that had been stuffed, the BBC reported.

 

The officials carried out the raid after they were alerted to “suspicious activity” on the property.

 

The trafficking of animals is a lucrative business in Mexico, with criminal gangs increasingly buying and selling exotic species for profit.

This week, Walmart announced that by the year 2026, 65 percent of its stores will be automated thanks to consistent issues maintaining workers in its supply chain services.

 

In addition to the increase in automation, the company hopes that within three years 55 percent of its products will move through automated facilities in order to lower “unit cost averages” by 20 percent.

 

“Walmart is reengineering its supply chain to fulfill customer needs with a more intelligent and connected omnichannel network that is enabled by greater use of data, more intelligent software, and automation,” the company announced via a press release. “The outcome improves in-stock, inventory accuracy and flow whether customers shop in stores, pickup, or have a delivery.”

 

The automation of these facilities and Walmart’s stores will, the company claims, lead to higher wages at the cost of less physical labor for employees. “Over time, the company anticipates increased throughput per person, due to the automation while maintaining or even increasing its number of associates as new roles are created.”

 

“It all starts with our associates,” said Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon. “We are a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer. As it relates to being people-led, it’s about purpose, values, culture, opportunity, and belonging.”

 

“We serve our associates by creating opportunities. Opportunities that turn jobs into careers,” he continued. “We help bring dignity to work by enabling them to see how they’re serving others, as part of a team, and helping them achieve their potential. And as we serve them, they serve our customers and members well…they make the difference.”

 

The company showcased these new innovations in a facility on Tuesday in Brooksville, Florida. as reported by The Daily Wire. The company was able to use a combination of data, robotics, and software to further automate its warehouses by illustrating “how the increased item storage allows the distribution center to provide a more consistent, predictable and higher quality delivery service to stores and customers and react more quickly to customer demand.”

 

Walmart seems to be adjusting to the post-pandemic economy created by the Biden administration which has resulted in a labor supply shortage.

 

According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 9.9 million open job openings as of February, however, there were only around 5.9 million known unemployed workers.

 

Given the lackluster economy, it is unsurprising that companies like Walmart are choosing to turn to automation to cut costs.
